Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was a beautiful, crystal clear Indian summer day. The sky was a blue as I?d ever seen it. The clouds were crisp with a brilliant sun peeking through. From my perch on the 14th floor at our Fairview Park office tower the view was amazing and I could see forever. My colleague came into the office and over to a group of us and said a plane has crashed in the WTC. At first I didn?t understand and she said it wasn?t a joke a plane has crashed into the WTC. I thought it must be a small commuter plane as I recalled hearing that this happened many years ago at the Empire State Building. I?m a native New Yorker born and bred in Brooklyn. I thought a little plane hitting the WTC wouldn?t cause too much damage. I knew the trading area in our office would have the television on and sure enough when I walked over several of my colleagues were watching the today show. As Katie Couric was talking about the unfolding incident at the WTC, we were all surprised to watch another plane slam into the tower. At that point I realized that it was no small commuter plane accident but a terrorist plot meant to destroy and kill innocent people. At this point it hadn?t hit me yet what had happened. As I stood there with my fellow colleagues I could not believe what I was seeing. I didn?t realize the magnitude of the disaster that was going on in lower Manhattan that day. As I walked back to my cubicle everyone around me had this look of shock. Everyone was going online to CNN, MSNBC etc. to get as much information as possible. I couldn?t imagine things would get much worse that day but as I would soon find out things did get much, much worse. The next thing I heard is that the Pentagon has been hit. I thought to myself this can?t be possibly be happening. I ran over to the window and sure enough I could see a plume of smoke rising from the Pentagon building. I ran back to the television and now CNN was on and we all watched with horror as the twin towers and now the Pentagon burned. Rumors began to run rampant as I heard that the State department had been bombed and the White House too. People were beginning to think that this was the start of some huge terrorist campaign and wanted to go home. The rumors were everywhere and I wondered when the other shoe would drop. There was just so much anxiety and everyone knew that Washington DC was a major terrorist target. Everyone began to pack up and gather his or her belongings. At that point I?d heard that one of the WTC buildings had collapsed, I didn?t think it was possible for the building to simply collapse into dust. I prayed that people were able to escape to safety before the building collapsed. My husband called and said he was going to pick up our son at school and that I should get home as soon as I can. As I prepared to leave some of our department managers met to discuss what the company should do in light of this tragedy. I don?t even remember how I made it home. I listed to news radio all the way home and could not believe what I was hearing. Once I got home I immediately sat on the couch and started watching the news. As I flipped through the channels I was haunted by what I saw on the Spanish channel Univision. They filmed people jumping from the WTC. I saw people so desperate to get away from the smoke and flames that the chose to jump rather than become human barbeque inside of the building. The next channel I flipped to showed the tower collapsing floor by floor. At that point I just lost it, I began to sob out loud. My city, the state of my birth was going through the tragedy of the century. At this point I just sat in front of the television for hours like many other Americans and watched with a measure of sadness, unbelief and finally anger. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Its funny. I can't quite remember the day before, or the day after, but the 11th of September will always be in my mind. I remember that I was in my cooking class when the attacks came. I remember that my initial reaction was "So what," lots of plane crash every day. Then slowly I realized that they had actualy hit the buildings themselves. I even remember what some people wer wearing. Another thing that I remember is that when I went to lunch some of the kids were lauging. Not to feel better about things but because of the people who had jumped out the windows. I almost wanted to slap those people for being so insensitive. A much brighter aspect of the attacks that I remember happened a couple of days later. After the attacks many people went to see patriotic movies at the video store. While some people got films like Saving Private Ryan, we rented Indipendance Day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was home that day reading my email. My TV was on in the other room but the volume was down. When I finished reading my email I went to the livingroom and looked at the TV to get the weather report. I was shocked when I seen the burning building. I did not know at the time what had happened or even what city it was. I turned up the volume and found out quickly. My first thoughts were "Those people are trapped in that building. NO way are they going to put that fire out! The pilot must have had a heart attack or something." Shortly after that I left to go to a friends house that was waiting for me. While I was getting in the car the second plane hit. I knew then that it was an act of Terrorism. I got to my friends house and we just stood in her dining room watching the tv. She had one on in every room so we would not miss anything. I watched in utter horror as the first building fell. My thoughts went to my cousin whom lives in New York. (Thank God she was safe... she is a bus a driver.. moving rescue workers to Ground Zero.) When the plane hit the Pentagon I experienced something I never thought was possible... I felt that my whole life just changed and it might not be for the better... I was scared. I was very scared. I prayed. I prayed all day long. I slept with the Tv on so that if anything else happened at night I would know about it.I wanted my children close to me all day. When my children got home from school I held them close. I called my son and told him I loved him and hoped he was ok. When my husband came home we just held each other. We had friends coming over for something.. can't remember what it was anymore. We just sat there and talked about what had happened if more was coming. Shock.. we were all in shock. I looked at my youngest who was 6 at the time and could not fully understand what had happened in her life today. I was scared for the future of my children.. what kind of future was there going to be. Well it is a year later and my children have learned some valuable lessons in the last year. I never thought that myself or my children would live to see something this terrible happen on in the USA. We are stronger now. My 12 year old has a new sense of Pride in her country. We are going on with our lives. On Sept 11 I put my flag out. THat flag over time got ruined in the weather. It was replaced with 2 flags. I also have my POW flag out still! THey will stay there!!! When they get worn they will be replaced. I will never forget!!! My prayers are for those victims and families. Tell us your story: I was at work when a co-worked (Marianne) yelled over to my office that her mom was on the phone and something hit the World Trade Center. We rushed for my Boss's office to turn on CNN to see what happened. One after another co-worker came into the office with blank expressions on their faces. I had hoped it was a movie, that it could not possibly be happening for real. We sat in disbelief and sadness. Our office sent us home to be with our families. All I remember is seeing the World Trade Center with smoke billowing out of a gigantic hole in the side of the building. I was in shock and confused. At first I thought there had just been a plane crash but then the news of a hijacking came to my attention. Watching the second tower colapse on live television is an image I will never forget. I cried and prayed silently that those who were working in the buildings at the time were able to escape unharmed. I watched the television all day at home and work. While driving I had the radio on. I craved information, I needed to know who would do such a thing. The attacks were cowardice, made by men to afraid to fight face to face. People like that need to be wiped from this earth. They have no concept of the value of human life. The people they killed did not harm them, they did not have anything to do with their way of life. I know if I had been on that plane I too would have fought till the bitter end. All those people did by destroying the trade centers was bring America together. After some minutes I looked at the message from a news-magazin ... the sms was something like "A tower of the WTC was hit by an airplane..". I was disturbed and at first did not believe the message. I few seconds later there was another sms "the second tower was also hit by an airplane.." My next thought was, where is the next TV, and I asked the professor. He asked me, why I wanted to watch television. I said "the world is burning and we sit here doing some stupid computer stuff." Everyone looked at me. I told what I had recently read on my cell phone. Most of the people looked at my like I was crazy, and worked on. I went up to the front desk and asked there for the next TV which was in the second floor. Around the TV I found a few people who were not able to speak, more and more arrived during the next minutes. We only looked on the TV-set and the only comment you heared from time to time was "This is war". About half an hour later my pregnant wife was calling my on the phone. She told me, that she was very afraid, to stay home alone on this night. I saw the towers collapsing. After that left Nuremberg back to Frankfurt where we live. I worked for an outsource company so as I normally did, I sat down and turned on my radio. As I'm sitting there, the radio newsman came on with an important announcement. I remember listening to it and not believing it, thinking that this was just a joke or something. He announced that a plane had hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center. I got up and told my co-workers this. Most of them took it with mild shock, thinking what a horrible accident. I returned to my desk and listened more, and I'll never forget the sound of the voice for the next event. "Oh my God, another plane flew into the other tower." The voice on the radio, was sickened at what they saw on their own TVs as they watched the second tower being struck. At that moment, the bottom of my stomach dropped. I was numb. I didn't know what was going on. By this point, I tried to go to various websites. CNN.com, MSNBC.com, Foxnews.com. I couldn't get to any site. I was finally able to log into MSNBC.com and saw the horrible flames in a still shot. I knew this was no accident. My co-workers at this point started to know something was going on. Hushed whispers going on. I stood up and looked at people milled about. This was definately not going to be a normal day at the office. I don't remember exactly when, but I remember my office rolled out a TV they normally used for trainings and turned it on to one of the local stations. As the first images, for us in the office, of the whole ordeal, I was just glued to the set. No emotion. I couldn't feel anything. I guess my saving grace was that, as I worked on an inbound call center, I took some calls as they came in answering questions about people's invoices and charges. It was a distraction or what was really important. I know at one point, the person who sat next to me ran home and brought in a television of their own, and set it up on an empty desk behind me. I remember standing there, watching everything. Everyone was so confused and unsure on anything at that time. Noone knew what was going on. And then, they stated the pentagon was just hit. The pit in my stomach dropped even further. What the hell is going on here? This is America! We don't have these problems. We don't have terrorists! That's something you hear about in Israel, not in the USA! I was scared. I was worried. What if we're next? What if the bridge I cross is next? What if I'm personally next? As we're watching the news, I remember turning away as they announced the second tower came tumbling down. I couldn't watch. I couldn't see these symbols of strength come falling and crashing to the earth. I turned my back and heard the rumble come across through the TV speakers. I knew at that point the world changed. After a few seconds, I remember Tom Brokaw saying. "They're gone. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. They're now gone." We continued watching the rest of the day as people made guesses as to what happened and why. I finally ended my shift and went home. During all of this, I had forgotten that this was also my mother's birthday. I came home and saw her face. Saw her tears. I just ran over and hugged her. Historians say that every generation has an event where people ask "where were you when this happened?" It happened with JFK being shot. It happened with the moon landing. It happened with stock market crash. And now, it's happened for me. Where was I on 9/11? I wish I didn't have to remember that day. I wish we had our innocence again. I wish that none of this ever happened. But now, three years later, it has happened. A memory which will never be forgotten. Tell us your story: this is what i have up on my site on www.rossirant.com for the 5 years anniversary September 11th 2006 911 2006 With the anniversary of 911 quickly approaching, I find myself doing, what I have done every year since September 11th 2001; take inventory of myself and inventory of the world around me since that terrible morning. For me…well I still jump when I hear a crash, still feel my heart crawl into my throat when a jet flies lower then usual, still, (admittedly) get nervous when I see a group of Middle-eastern men in a huddle talking, still find myself tying up loose ends every time Im getting ready to fly, still fight back tears when I stand on my roof and look out at where the towers had been, still remember the weird smell, still think of the endless dust of ground zero whenever I walk in falling snow, still remember the woman who said she saw me walking home late one day from ground zero and did not say hello to me because she thought I looked like the living dead, a zombie trudging down the Bowery and I thought all that love I tried to pour into the dead eyed broken faces and it never occurred to me that I was like that too for a little while, still look at firemen and feel so much love and compassion and gratitude that I think I will burst at the seams, still look at President Bush and feel anger that he turned universal well wishers into haters of America, still wonder why the hell Osama runs free while nearly 3,000 innocents are under ground, still have anger, still have asthma and still, still, still, feel eternally grateful that I was granted the chance to go down there and be a part of the most wondrous, brave, selfless and love-full rescue and relief mission that I had ever imagined. I no longer take life for granted, I no longer think I have all the time in the world to see my loved ones, no longer believe that fame and glory and success are as important as health and life and laughter, no longer think that mass murder is a distant stranger, that angels only exist in heaven, that strangers cant in an instant love you more then friends, that strangers cant in an instant destroy thousands of worlds, I no longer wake up in the morning and feel that I have endless mornings to loll around in, but instead hop out of bead determined to make this day count, I am no longer innocent. The world No longer seems to want to work it out, talk it out, hash it out, negotiate it out, it wants instead to blow up its innocents, to teach children how to turn themselves into bombs, to teach educated adults to hate entire religions and races, to turn religion whether it be right wing Christian, fundamentalist Moslem or extreme Judaism into a right to kill anyone who opposes, the world seems to have forgotten its world wars, its Nazis, its genocides, its crusades and rivers of blood in the name of god, the world is probably angry because slowly but steadily with our machines and our smoke and our nukes we are breaking its heart. And so…this downtown New Yorker, this American, this Jew, this woman, this out loud and proud gay mama, would like to plant a seed..a little seed, a tiny, itty, bitty seed that all of you take and put into your pocket and hold to your heart and warm and nourish and help grow into a strong root and then a proud tree projecting from your hearts out into the world, this tree of love, this tree of peace, this tree of kindness, of remembrance, of new beginnings.. it is time my friends, my family, my readers my wondrous strangers, my new faces and old ones, it is time to change the world. As we were watching and he was explaining what had happened the second plane hit and everyone fell silent in utter disbalief at what we were seeing. I have spent much of the day thinking and reflecting, not only about the tragic events of that day exactly one year ago, but about all of the days since then. I have had 365 days to grieve, mourn, reflect, grow, and mature. I have done these things in great amounts. I have achieved goals and dealt with problems, one just as painful as 9/11, and I understand more. However, no matter how much has happened since then, the memory is vividly clear, as if it happened just moments ago. It's second period. Im sitting in the fifth seat of the first row of Mr. Fletcher's junior english class. But im not thinking about english, im thinking about summer. The beach, the sun, the girls, just being innocent. Then our principal Mr. Kemeza comes over the intercom and informs the students that there has been an attack on the world trade center. In a sudden wave of fearfull confusion I think "World Trade center, New York. I dont know anybody in New York." Deep breath... But still worried. I don't yet know the massiveness of the destruction. Later, in history class we watch the news. There isn't any news though. Nobody knows who, or why, or how. There is just an image of a small dark object flying into the tower and exploding. Over and over and over again. My eyes glued to this painful scene as it is infinitely repeated on the Tv screen. Then finally an update. The pentagon in Washington D.C. has been hit by another plane. Fear quickly fades and is replaced by terror. In a brief moment frantic thoughts burn in my mind. I think about my sister Meaghan at the Catholic University of America right in the heart of D.C. I try to remember the tour I took with her a year erlier. Where exactly was the pentagon, was it close to her school? But I can't remember. I wish that I had a map, but I don't. All I can do is hope and pray. That night after returning home from school and watching the news for a few hours I went to a prayer service. The service had been spread by word of mouth. By seven O'clock the church was unusually filled with teenagers. Deep breath... this time I felt better. By now I had talked to my sister and knew she was safe. However, the thing that made me relax was seing all of my peers come together and help support eachother. It was a time when knowing that the person standing next to you was a friend, made you feel safe, even if one of the most horrific events in our history had taken place just hours earlier. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: About three weeks prior to September 11th, I moved in with my parents (they live in Las Vegas). I was sleeping when my mom woke me up and said, "We're being attacked!! We're being attacked!!" Since there is a lot of construction going on all throughout Las Vegas, I heard a lot of noise outside the bedroom windown. Naturally, I assumed we were being attacked in the front yard of the home. Little did I know, It was on the other side of the U.S. However, the terrorist threats filtered immediately into Las Vegas, shutting down EVERYTHING!!! This includes all malls for two days, the post office, airport, some of the casinos. During the next five days, when I wasn't exercising, I was glued to the television. I kept it on the news 24 hours a day, watching updates, stories, and hoping people would find their friends and loved ones in the tragedy. On Friday night, I left the house to go to dinner and was stunned when the bar at the restaurant chose to air sports instead of news. I thought, "How could anyone NOT watch news during a time like this?" It's reasuring to know that NOBODY has forgotten this day, yet the terrorists did NOT stop anyone from continuing with their daily lives. We will do away with terrorists, eventually. I first learned of the catastrophe while driving down Interstate 264 on my way to work. I talked to my wife, who was at home and saw the events unfold on television. I then went to a hotel near my office to see televison for myself, which is where I saw the buildings collapse. As my life has changed, my belief in my fellow man has been degraded. Tell us your story: The Morning: I woke up Tuesday morning, vowing that it would be just another normal day of my newly established life and routine in Manhattan. In the six month period of December 2000 through May 2001, I endured retinal detachment surgery, a cancer scare, the stress of a rapidly deteriorating workplace in Buffalo, two relocations, a new position in NYC and the end of my marriage. 9/11/2001 would've been my eighth wedding anniversary. Pre-occupied with this backdrop, I was determined to operate in my "plan for the worst but work toward the best" mode. I walked out of my apartment building on East 29th, grabbed a cab on the corner of Madison and headed to the office. Traffic was terrible... Gridlock. We made it about ten blocks up Madison. I asked the driver to pull over so I could walk the last nine blocks to my mid-town office. I got out of the cab somewhere between 8:30-8:40 AM. Manhattan is loud. Especially at rush hour... The horns, trucks, construction, helicopters and subways... You get used to it very quickly. As I got out of the cab and started walking, I heard a louder than normal noise from above, like an really low airplane. I looked up and saw nothing. Other people were looking up also. I didn't see anything, but from the street level of midtown all you can see is what's directly above you because the buildings are so tall. I shrugged it off and made my way to work. I pushed my way through the crowd of co-workers huddling around televisions in the office lobby watching CNN's live coverage. The weird thing was I asked a co-worker why CNN was showing old file footage of the 1993 WTC car bomb incident. He said "No, no... It's live... They think an airplane hit the North Tower." I went numb. That loud sound I just heard on the street now made horrific sense. Just after the South Tower was struck, a girl from our finance group who sat across from me walked in a few minutes late for work. She took one look at the images on TV, dropped everything, screamed something and ran to her desk. A few of us follwed her. Her father was in one of the towers... In the 70's... She wanted to go down to the site. It took quite a few people to convince her to stay put. We told her that she'd be safer and more accessible to family by staying at our office so she could answer her phone and email. It wasn't until that afternoon tht she learned her father was alive. He got out, despite instructions over the public address that is was OK to return to his office, and then ran to the restaurant his brother owned in Chinatown. No amount of planning could've prepared anyone for the shock of what happened. As miserable as I thought my life was, my problems were suddenly inconsequential to the new reality. I was alive... I didn't loose anyone. I was lucky. The 9/11 letters: Transportation and telephone communications in and out of the city were non-existent. Email and online chat were the only vehicles to get the word out. I decided that sending an email was my best shot at updating the most people about my status. What i didn't realize was that these letters would take on a life of their own. I sent them to everyone in my address book. Many of these people forwarded them to others, who then in turn sent them to their contacts and so on, like a pyramid scheme. Very soon I started receiving emails from strangers... Friend of a friend of a friend thing. People printed these letters, saved them, shared them and put them in scrap books. a museum director used them in an installation about the 9/11 tragedy. teachers in schools around the country read them to students in their classes. I was flooded with messages from well wishers. For all of your thoughts and prayers i will always be profoundly grateful... Thank you. I've posted the letters here and on my personal website as i still get asked about them. I'm amazed (and perhaps in denial) by the whole thing. I don't get it... I'm not a hero, I have no survivors tale to tell. Maybe they struck a nerve in some way by documenting the moment from the perspective of an Average Joe from Buffalo who's real happy he didn't take that downtown apartment downtown on John Street. Post 9/11: I've heard that 300,000 people have left NYC post 9/11 for whatever reason. To put it in perspective, that's the population of a medium sized city like my hometown of Buffalo, NY. And now I am one of those people, but not by choice. In the post 9/11, Enron, Worldcom, Adelphia era many people have fallen on hard times. Those of us in advertising/marketing/interactive arenas took a big hit. When the economy gets bad, the first thing companies do is lay off people and cut the marketing budget. The CEO of my firm sold the company, lost clients, and laid off people, including me. Ouch, now I'm a statistic. Manhattan became my savior, muse and lover. The experience has enriched me beyond words.. My priorities have changed and I now realize that the greatest thing God ever created is a new day. If there had to be a day for early dismissal, it is fortunate that it coincided with another of my mornings of oversleep. Now, I don't have to use leave, since the terrorist bombings in NYC and the Pentagon have rendered the matter moot. I got in to the office sometime around 0915, and not long after getting to work, Cuong T. [a coworker] came by to tell of two aircraft hitting the World Trade Center. Thinking this to be an accident, I carried on with examining until it became clear that a crisis was at hand and we were being told to go home. 2. I am glad to have had the requisite patience to endure the 4-hour drive home, most of which was spent exiting Crystal City. I saw the bumper-to-bumper vehicles on Crystal Drive as I walked to Crysal Mall parking, then I realized I might get out a bit faster from the garage by driving down the back ramp to the G3 level. There was a sizable delay there, too, however, and just reaching 20th Street was a struggle. I spent some time listening to K4US traffic [amateur radio club VHF repeater] on my IC2AT, as well as taking a call from Thomas N. [another coworker] on my cell phone. They weren't entirely swamped. I then settled in to a long session of listening to WRC 980 AM, finally breaking relatively free when I hit westbound 23rd Street. 3. It was good to see a slight restoration of a "normal" day in the worweek, once I made it past the I-95 entrance on Route 1, which had some congestion but not what I had expected as I came south on Mt. Vernon Ave. Since I had not eaten since breakfast, I decided on a late lunch at 1430 at the Penn Daw Pizza Hut. I even got a chance to play a few credits on that "Night Moves" sit-down pinball machine at the entranceway. When I got back to the truck, I called Tom on the cell phone, to tell him of my high adventures. He had been out sick. As I talked, I got a call from Ma on the "other line", wondering how I was. I looked outside; the sun was shining and I thought, ?Today will be a good day for me.? The time was now 9am when I finished my work out. The tragedy had already occurred, yet I knew nothing- why? Well, usually I grab the newspaper every morning on my way back in, however that day, I decided to skip it. I also promised myself no TV unless I had extra time before going to work. I went ahead and got ready for work. I had a 45-minute drive ahead of me and decided instead of always flipping through radio stations, I?ll just throw in a CD. At the time, I worked for a bank so when walked in, it was hectic. All of my co-workers were completely busy. I started helping out the first customer when the man said, ?Wow, we Americans never saw this one coming!? I didn?t question his comment; I just didn?t quite understand his remark. As soon as the gentleman left, my co-worker said, ?Gosh, that customer almost sounded as if this tragedy is a wonderful thing!? That?s when I asked, ?What are all of these people talking about?? Yes, I definitely heard every little detail throughout the day; from my co-workers, as well as the customers. My manager said he was surprised I didn?t know a thing. But I explained to everyone how my morning began; no television, no newspaper, and no radio on my way to work. My co-workers and I engaged in a huge conversation about the technology we have now, and yet sometimes it goes overlooked, as in my case. I know, one way or another, I would have found out through interaction with the public. I realized the difference in the means of communication we have now as opposed to the past. For the following days, the tragedy was everywhere; every newspaper, TV station, radio stations, everywhere on the Internet. It?s a shame we have the advancement of technology to inform us, by any means, of triumphant and tragic events. Unfortunately, it could have done nothing to prevent this from occurring. I learned from my experience. In fact, now, I go out of my way to read the newspaper every morning, watch the news before leaving home, and flipping through the radio stations, no matter how long the distance. I discover something new every day- sometimes good, sometimes not so great, but the point is I?m listening. While I was on the first bus, a man who had headphones on announced to the bus the dreadful news that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center tower.
