Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Even though we are a couple hours behind, I had already been at work for several hours. I am a purchasing agent for a plumbing company and I heard about the tragedy on the radio. I immediately took off for a supplier's shop to watch on TV what I was only able to see through my mind's eye. We closed down our company before lunch so that everyone could pick up their kids and be with whatever family they might have. I spent months crying every time I heard the national anthem. My most singular memory was of the African American fireman (or was it a policeman?) singing the "God Bless America" at all the Yankee's games. I swear I have never shed so many tears in such a short time. Like most Americans I knew a few people killed, and I will forever remember September 11th 2001. It was the day our current society lost its innocence. It was the day I was robbed of friendships. I remember talking to those older than I about the assasination of JKF; and it seems no matter how young or old you are, you remember that day. 9-11 will be the day that no one will forget for the new generations. God Bless America, freedom, and may he continue to find ways to assuage the anguish of our suffering. At 8:48 am, I was on a Manhattan-bound N-train as it made the turn towards Queensborough Bridge. As the train turns to the west, the downtown skyline comes into view, The World Trade Center its center point. On this day as we made the turn One World Trade Center burst into flames. There was a general panic as passengers rushed to the get a glimpse while grabbing for radios and cell phones to find out what was happening. Within three minutes, we were underground crossing the East River knowing only that a plane had crashed into the top floors of Tower One and that it was still inside the building. Fixable. By the time I walked onto 42nd Street outside Grand Central Station, the second tower was hit. I was oblivious. I didn?t know that anything more had happened till I reached my Madison Avenue office, where the feelings of distress were thick enough to touch. My voicemail was teeming with grief-stricken messages: ?Mina, Where are you?! Are you ok? Call me as soon as you get this!? The entire staff dialed relentlessly ? trying to get phone lines to find friends and family. I had constant contact with my husband from his office in New Jersey, my parents, grandparents and bothers in Missouri, my in-laws and aunts in Greece. They were all very fearful for me. ?Alone? in Midtown Manhattan ? strategically located between Grand Central Station and Times Square. We sat with radios and televisions blaring as we watched over downtown Manhattan in horror. We listened quietly as the Pentagon was attacked and as Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. We watched and were devastated as Tower Two crumbled to the ground. Words cannot express? My thoughts were of Windows on the World on the 107th floor of One World Trade Center. It was, hands down, my all-time favorite view. My husband and I had spent our first anniversary there. It was always one of my first stops when entertaining visitors. It was the place where my dad and I swing-danced on my little brother?s birthday. Where parents and in-laws shared a meal the first time we had them all in the same place. The Twin Towers symbolized New York City in an amazing way. A city in itself, the World Trade Center always drew me. Any excuse to roam the mall ? or Century 21 across the street, to trip though the book store that took a corner of the first 3 floors, to do happy hour at Windows. Those ?rocket-powered? elevators that went from 1 to 100 in 15 seconds or less! I couldn?t believe that this was happening. While these thoughts went through my head. I listened with the heaviest heart as Tower One fell to the ground taking with it so many lives, and a legacy. I couldn?t ? and can?t believe that the Twin Towers are no longer. I truly believed that nothing could bring them down. We watched from our windows as masses of people streamed quickly, steadily uptown on streets that are normally packed with bumper-to-bumper traffic. Today, these avenues served strictly as pedestrian throughways. The sight was surreal. I questioned whether or not I would make it home ? ever ? and for the first time in my life, I did not know the answer. It was that traumatic. I did not leave the office that day until I knew that everyone had a safe place to go. I was the last to leave. At 5:00 PM I walked out onto Madison Avenue and looked downtown at the cloud of smoke that hovered in the place where the World Trade Center once stood. I turned my back and walked 23 blocks up Fifth Avenue to find a friend to hike across the Queensborough Bridge with. The streets were empty of cars, of people. All of the posh Fifth Avenue boutiques were closed with signs reading ?God Bless America? and flags in the windows. The city was abandoned. One outgoing lane opened on most major bridges after 5:30, but no inbounds were open. My husband could not come home. I went to an outdoor caf? where many sat dazed, confused as military helicopters flew above. It was as if we were in a war zone ? the ones you see on CNN or in Time. This was New York City. September 12th ? The Realization Waking up, the day seemed normal enough. The office was closed. I watched CNN, BBC, MSNBC all day. I could not divert my attention. I watched over and over as the planes crashed into the towers, as the towers crumbled. I relived the horror, frustration and fear. I cried all day. My husband still hadn?t come home. September 13th ? Trying to Get Back to Life Unwilling, unable to deal with another day at home alone, I headed to work in hopes that I wouldn?t be the only one there. I didn?t take the subway, afraid of being underground. I walked. There were crowds forming on Park Avenue, lines of people that extend for blocks. They were waiting to pass through Police and National Guard checkpoints prior to entering their places of business. There were no cars on the streets, only people. I didn?t take the shortcut through Grand Central. This was not a working day. More like a morale day. My department started a fund to collect money and supplies for the rescue workers. Within twenty-minutes we had more than $700 in cash in addition to boxes full of t-shirts, socks, saline solution, flashlights, and anything else you can imagine. Grand Central Station was evacuated after a bomb threat. Crowds of people were speed-walking by below our windows. Our building was evacuated and later reopened ? it would be closed the following day. At the end of the day, we grabbed as many bags as we could carry and hiked over to the Javits Center where donations were being accepted. There were thousands of people spilling onto the West Side Highway, donating supplies, food, blood, money, time and moral support. Off-duty rescue workers were lying on the sidewalks, resting in full gear under a burning sun. The National Guard was everywhere ? military garb, military vehicles. A sight so foreign, so thought provoking, yet strangely empowering. September 14th ? The Thunder My husband made it home late last night. I was so relieved and happy. It felt as though months had passed since I saw him last. Rain was in the forecast but the storm that followed was frightening. The thunder was so loud and unlike any thunder you?ve ever heard. I woke up terrified, believing that buildings were crumbling around me. It rained all day. I can?t remember the weekend. September 17th ? The Week After I was determined to make this week as normal as possible. I found the first ?Wall of Tears? ? with photos of lost loved-ones, messages to victims, burning candles, flowers ? just blocks from home. They are everywhere. On every other street corner I come face to face with the smiling faces of victims of the disaster, ?Missing?. It breaks my heart. Crowds gather to mourn, study photos, read messages, leave flowers, pray. I am one of the lucky ones ? all of my lost were found safe. The smiling faces stay with me. I am amazed by the changes I have seen in New York, in New Yorkers. The city has become much more civil. At the onset of last week even eye contact was semi off-limits. Now strangers stop to ask if you are ok. They touch and hug you. Everyone is sharing his or her story. It helps. I am living in a daze. I still can?t believe that the towers are gone, that so many lives have been lost. Even when I see the site where The World Trade Center once stood. September 21st ? The Love This was truly the most hopeful day I had since the September 11th attacks. I spent the morning answering calls to the Crisis Line set up by The New York Convention and Visitors Bureau. Four of every five calls were from people wanting to reach out. Many were doing so by flying to New York City (from Texas, Tennessee, Alaska, Oregon, New Mexico ? you name it) to stay for just one night to put money into the city?s economy, take gifts to local fire-fighters, volunteer? anything to help. Many called to voice their concern and support ? just because they had no one in the area to voice it to. There was so much love. Mayor Rudy Gulianni opened SNL with two-dozen police, fire and rescue personnel. The City is back in business. Today ? Moving Forward Today I am packing, tomorrow I am moving to Upper Montclair in New Jersey ? a move that was planned before the attacks. It is so ironic. Using old newspapers as packing material, I continuously come across images of the attacks ? images that are permanently embedded in my mind. They bring tears to my eyes. After the move, I will continue to work (and play) in Manhattan ? only my residence will be elsewhere. But, with this new environment will come new outlooks, new sentiments, new thoughts and new routines. I am moving on. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: After working all night I was home in bed when my wife woke me at about 10am with tears in her eyes. I had no idea what was wrong until I looked to the television. At first I thought it was just some terrible accident but when the second plane crashed I was terrified. I am a Gulf War Veteran and I have seen terrible things, but nothing will ever compare to what I was witnessing at that moment. My first instinct was to make contact with every member of my family including my mother in Boston. I was afraid at the thought of War being waged right here in my homeland where my family is, where my son and daughter live. I was not suddenly driven to pick-up the fight against these terrorists, instead I was trying to figure out how to protect my family from the horrors that I was sure were to come. In the following days I struggled to function, I was afraid to even go to work and leave them behind. How could I send my daughter to school? What if something happened? The one sight that I will never forget was not the buildings crashing to the ground, it was the sight of the Combat Air Patrol that was circling over my home. God Bless You, and God Bless America. I was chatting to some colegues at the company I USED to work for. Id changed my job a few months before and was passing my old office, so I thought Id stop off, say Hi and tell them about my wonderful, unforgetable trip to New York on September 28th. It was my second trip and both had been trips I will never ever forget. The people, the kindness, the fun, the freindliness, what a City. We stayed, on both occasions, in the Millenium Hilton Hotel (opposite the Trade Centres) in Church St, Our room was on the 48th floor and the view from that room every morning and every night of those magnificent towers are something I will remember forever. NY is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to and even after 13 months that those bastards destroyed part of your City, I know that you will rebuild all your lives and your city. I had only been asleep for 3 hours when my fiance woke me up while getting ready for work. He said wake up, the Pentagon and World Trade center have been attacked. I thought he was joking. No way would the Pentagon and World Trade Center be attacked. Our military would have stopped any attack dead in it's tracks I thought. I ran to the television and my worst fears were confirmed. The twin towers had gaping holes as black as night with smoke billowing out. I didn't say a word. I was in complete shock. As I watched the horror it then became worse when I saw the towers collapse on live t.v. After the events unfolded I called my loved ones on the east coast and began donating money to those who needed it more. I prayed for the victims safe return home. I had a zero hour last year, so I probably got up very early, grumpy as usual, and sleep-walked through the first few periods of school. After second hour I was scrambling to get some last minute homework done in the library. A teacher was talking to the librarian about a plane hitting the World Trade Center. Huh? I was confused, so I shrugged it off; I grabbed a computer and printed off my homework, then ran to third hour with barely enough time before the tardy bell. My third hour, coincidentally, was U.S. History. My teacher, Mr. Cobb, loves having his students watch his huge screen TV at the front of the room, whether it be the time, movies, or now, the WTC attack video footage. So watch the TV we did, only these were horrific images of the plane crashing into the World Trade Center. Over and over they showed the same scene; a plane crashing into the side of the building, and plumes of smoke billowing out into the air. The news was so shocking to me, that I started crying in class. Mr. Cobb said that if anyone needed to leave and go to the office, it would be okay. Another girl was also sobbing, but much more so than I was. I asked her if she wanted to go to the office with me, even though I didn't like her much, but she declined. My friend Zoe and I ended up leaving the classroom, but we didn't go to the office. Instead, we went around to various teachers' rooms to give them hugs, and also to give hugs to our friends. I think Zoe even gave the principal a hug. We were the Hug Patrol that day, which makes me smile, even though the events of that day were somber. The rest of the day blurred together; there was probably more talk of the terrorist attack, but I don't remember much. I do remember calling my mom during school to tell her about the attacks, and to tell her to watch the TV. She was like, "Ai-yah, okay." We had watched on TV, the first tower go down during third hour; later in the day we watched the second tower follow the same fate. We also heard about the Pentagon being hit, and the plane crashing in Pennsylvania. In my afternoon classes, some of my teachers tried to be productive, which I resented. If something this traumatic was going on in our nation, is a stupid syllabus that important? I didn't care about keeping up on the schedule and stuff like that; I was just thinking about the people in that plane and how scared they must've been. Then I thought about the people in the building, and how confused and unaware they must've been as well. 2001 was the first year I tried out for tennis... We had a tennis match that day but it got cancelled. I wouldn't've remembered that if my friend hadn't reminded me. Apparently it was a home game, but no one would've played very well if we had gone through with it. When I got home, my first thought was to call my boyfriend to see what he thought about all of it. We'd only been together for a week, and then the WTC attack happened. I was so worried, wondering if he had relatives or anything living in New York. It's odd thinking about it now, how we had only known each other for about a week but here I was, already worried about him. Fortunately, we're still together a year later. =) When my dad got home, my mom hounded him with questions. He had found out at work what had happened, and I suppose they discussed about it some. I wasn't really paying attention; one of my sister's close friends lived in New York at the time and I was thinking about him. My sister was a senior at MSU at this time, so she was close to home. Later that week her friend came home to Michigan because he was scared, and they got together to talk. My relatives in Taiwan called because they were worried about us. My mom assured them that we were fine, and again they talked. There was so much talking involved with the WTC attacks, yet I don't remember any of it. Later that week I was online, talking to my friend from New York. I was worried about him because I hadn't talked to him in forever. Coincidentally, he goes to the school that is about a block away from the WTC. I was scared for him, because I hadn't heard from him in a while and I was afraid something had happened to him. Him and his friend were outside when the plane crashed into the tower; he got shrapnel in his arm. Since he's a swimmer, he was out for about a month. When school let out for the day, they walked to his friend's house in Queens. I just remember being so relieved to talk to his friend and finding out he was okay. Now that I think about it, September 11th was the birthday of a girl in my third hour. I felt bad for her; having such an event on her birthday. She kept saying, "Today's my birthday... today's my birthday..." Well, happy birthday Jen, it's September 11th again. I ha taken my wife to a doctor in Oneonta early that morning and as we were leaving the office the news came over the TV in the waiting room that a plane had hit one of the Twin Towers. I got the rest of the news over the car radio on the hour plus ride home that day. When I heard my wife say, ?Oh my God the one of the Towers fell down?, my reply was, ?No, that can?t be, listen, you must have heard it wrong.? Then with out a TV in front of me I listened and pictured in my mind as they described the death and destruction as the second tower went down. And I can still feel that queasiness that I had in the pit of stomach when I heard that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon and another into a field in Pennsylvania. Now 2 years from that day we go about our daily routines, but that feeling in the pit of our stomachs still surfaces from time to time when we all wonder what?s next? So, say a prayer and put a light in the widow for those who died that day and for those giving their lives at this moment trying to stop that next thing from becoming reality. Tell your family, friends and neighbors that you love them. Then, go on with your life, don?t dwell upon the past, but never, ever forget that 9/11, 2001. I had a broken foot at the time which needless to say hurt, but that day, the pain seemed less for the pain in the peoples faces around the WTC, the Pentagon and the Jet that crashed were horrible. We will never forget that day, my family assembled at my home and we were speachless. Everything got worse at the minutes passed, then as the hours passed, to say opur hearts were breaking all day long is an understatement. GOD bless all who were lost that day, all that lost that day and all of us who feel the loss of that day. My Dad, who passed away on 10-11-01 seemed to be horrified by this event more than anyone in my family. He was a WW11 VET. and this tragedy hurt him deeply, he had seen enough loss in his lifetime, but they were loses for freedom of this country. This was a senseless, greedy and inhuman act upon our freedom. On this Anniversary of 9-11 and in future years on this date, I will pray for those lost and for my Dad, for the look in his eyes when this happened will never be forgotten. She had finally fell asleep sometime very early that morning, my husband was asleep on the couch in the living room, I had turned on the television in our bedroom and sometime shortly thereafter fell asleep myself. I thought I was dreaming, when I finally got awake I realized I wasn't, the first plane had just hit and there was talk about it being an accident and years ago a plane hitting the Empire State Builing and then something happened that I will never forget the second plane came around and all you could do was watch helplessly. I then went in and woke up my husband and told him what happened we both just sat there in awe.I just kept thinking, how could this be happening to the best damned nation in the world why didn't somebody try to stop it, why? Didn't these people who were behind this know that we will never forget, you don't kill thousands because you don't agree with the way we live or because you are jealous, you just don't do it!!!! As for my six week old daugter she is now over 13 months old and is beautiful, she amazes me everyday and I am thankful for all of our freedoms and that she has a mommy and daddy who love her very much. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11, I rolled out of my bunk bed and stumbled to our freshmen dorm floor bathroom. Coming back to our room, my roommate and I talked about the bubble of college. "No one knows what is going on in the world," said my roommate. "We could be going to war today and we would never know it." Little did we know that after this day our world would never be the same. I walked across campus to my class, hurrying a little so I wouldn't be late. As I walked in the door I knew something was wrong. Everyone was gathered around a fuzzy television. Someone turned around and said, "We think something was bombed in New York. Someone in our dorm saw it on their TV as I was leaving." I joined the circle around the news just as the coverage was interupted by a scene I'll always remember--an airplane careening through the second Twin Tower. We all stood in shock, not knowing how to react. Soon classes were cancelled and we were herded to the chapel where we watched the news coverage on the big screen. After an hour of prayer for what was going on, we walked back to our dorms in a daze of confusion. The next few days I wandered around struggling with fear and confusion. Why were we attacked? Would my friends be sent to war? What would happen next? The first time I went home to Chicago after 9/11 I saw the Sears Tower in a new light. I suddenly had a new understanding, a slight glimpse of how the people of New York felt. Their ground had been trampled on, their turf invaded, their people lost. As time progressed I realized that this spoke for the entire heart of America. OUR turf was invaded, OUR ground trampled on, OUR people lost. While the Twin Towers may not have been a familiar landmark in everyone's life, they were an icon of America and the whole of America had been attacked. Now more than a year later, life is different. To an extent every day that passes is an ordinary day. People still go to work; people will still eat their meals. By continuing with our everyday lives we are not allowing terrorism to ruin the lives of our country. Still, life IS different. There is a reflective spirit in the air that ponders the value of lives that have been lost and the course of action that has ensued since 9-11. The event has brought a valuable chance for us to reflect and appreciate those around us. The events that took place on September 11, 2001, still hurt. Our country will never be the same. Still, we can stop and take a moment, remembering to be thankful that we live in a free country, remembering to be thankful for those who work to guard our country and remembering all those who have died for the freedoms we have. It is warm outside, with a crisp breeze. I am sitting in Springfield VA and trying to keep myself in my seat and not panic at how similiar today is to September 11th. A year ago, tomorrow, I was driving into Old Town Alexandria (right next to Fort Belvoir via the GW Parkway to be exact) when I heard a local radio station announce that the World Trade Center had been struck by a plane. My first thought was oh my god, this is it. Two short footnotes to this story...I was 6 months pregnant and had just lost my father a few months beforehand..fear was prevelant. Ten minutes or so later I show up to work just in time to notice a 2nd plane flying behind the burning 1st tower, and then watch as that plane rammed into the 2nd tower. I immediately sat down and began to cry. What seemed like hours later CNN broadcasts that the Pentagon had just been hit. My office was almost directly across the Potomac River from the Pentagon, we looked out our windows toward that direction and saw a plume of black smoke. My fater-in-law works for the DOD and has an office in the Pentagon, having just lost my father I lost it. I tried to use my cell phone to call my husband, who was in DC also at his training class (he's an electrician apprentice), but I could not reach him. I began crying and having stomach pains. My co-workers sat me down and tried to calm me down because they were afraid I was going to lose my son. I finally reached my husband and he was stuck in traffic...right in front of the capitol building (a plane was missing and suspected to be headed for the capitol building). Convinced I was going to lose 3 more people (my father in law, my husband and our unborn son), I broke down and hid in the bathroom. Finally regaining my composure I went back to my office and waiting to hear newas, I have never been as happy or felt as blessed as I did when I saw my gorgeous husband standing in front of me. He grabbed me and told my boss we were leaving.... We walked out onto the streets of Old Town Alexandria and they were empty. The few people who were out were staring at the large black smoke coming across the river and the fighter planes screaming down the Potomac River. I followed my husband home, it took us 2 hours to get past Fort Belvoir, and once we got on 95, it was a ghost town. I can't remember 95 ever being so empty. We went home first to call his mom and see if she had heard anything from his father...luckily he had been at the CIA that day and was on his way home. Since we lived right outside of Quantico, we packed bags, grabbed our dog and two cats and went down to Fredericksburg to stay with my mom. She had been watching our oldest son that day and didn't know about what was going on (ahh the joys of nickelodeon) until we called her to tell her we were coming and staying there. The next day neither of us went to work, I wondered if I would ever be able to go back there....We did and that night we spent at home listening to the sounds of helicopters and planes overhead, wondering if they were coming from Quantico, or aiming for Quantico. Almost a year ago today and I can still feel the terror and the pain. I cry for everyone who was lost that day and for everyone who was found that day. I have since moved to Fredericksburg and changed job locations to Springfield, which I think might still be too close...I would like to move to the Outer Banks, while right now they're biggest worry is SubTropical Storm Gustav. I didn't pay too much attention to it, unfortunatly. When I arrived at school I began to learn more about it as the day went on. The TVs were on in the cafeteria all day, in every class we talked about what had just happened. A sense of sadness and also a sense of revenge filled the school that day. Later on I played in a volleyball game. I thought they might reschedule this but they didn't and we played just like it was any old day. Before the game started they had a moment of silence for the events that took place earlier that day. The national anthem seemed to have a much more meaningful feel that day. That day I started at 8:00a.m. and was driving to work listening to music dreading another day at work, I knew nothing of what was going on in New York. Shortly after being there customers were coming through my checkout and telling me about the horrible things that were happening, I couldn't believe it, and as more employees came into work they also told of what they just seen on T.V. it still seemed so unreal. It was hard to concentrate and do my job I had to keep fighting back the tears. All I wanted to do was to leave and be with my family and watch what was going on. I had to stay and on my breaks I spent the time watching one of the T.V's that our store had for sale. It was still so hard to believe what was going on, I never thought anything like this would ever happen here. As soon as I got home from work I put un the T.V and spent the rest of the night watching everthing that was going on and continued to do so for the rest of the week. My life as I knew it had totally changed this day and I will never feel completely safe ever again. Friends and family, I want to give you a rambling sense of what it's been like here this week. First of all, it was the most gorgeous of mornings. The sky was so blue and clear, the heavens seemed transparent like fine crystal. It was wonderful to breathe the air; there was just a hint of autumn crispness to it, and it made me smile. The world couldn't have ended on a more bautiful day. I now imagine that Armageddon will start off like this. I suppose it's good to be warned - wasn't the start of WWII on an equally gorgeous morning? I head about the attacks when my daughter Alisoun called me up from New York City (She and my son Christopher live in Long Island City, right across the East River from the World Trade Towers.). I was getting ready to go to work a bit late, and hadn't yet turned on the radio or TV. She told me that we had been attacked. I rushed to turn on my tv while talking to her. Alisoun, looking out her window across the East River, told me that she was watching one of the towers collapse before her eyes. I couldn't see that happening on my TV - I guess the angle of the camera was different from her real-life view, and I tried to tell her that she was wrong, that that couldn't be happening. But of course, it was... I was in denial. Even days later, Alisoun tells me that she can smell the stench from the fire when the wind comes from the west. I then heard there was a bombing at the State Department, where (my husband) Bob used to work, which turned out to be a rumor, but I didn't know that then. It frightened me immensely because he works in the Ronald Reagan International Trade Building just three blocks from the White House, and for all I knew that building could have been next to be destroyed, so I called him and yelled at him to come home immediately when I heard what was happening, and for a change, he agreed. With great misgivings, I then went to work (about a mile further away) because I had promised to bring a homeless, psychotic mother and her baby to a residential drug treatment program for mothers. I felt it would have been dishonorable to refuse to go when I was being depended upon. When I got to work, most of my colleagues were drifting out of the building, but my patient and her baby were waiting. It took me two hours to drive the 6 or 7 blocks to the program because all the federal government workers had been released from work and told to go home. The whole city -- not just the federal workers -- seem to be evacuating without any direction whatsoever. The streets of Washington were filled with persons walking, and cars were in total gridlock. It was as if the biggest 4th of July firework show ever had just ended, and the entire city was trying to get home. But it wasn't festive, it was purposeful Pedestrians were flowing over the streets like molasses, and with the same result. It was very difficult trying to make polite conversation with my patient under the best of circumstances, which this certainly wasn't! I wanted to listen to the radio to find out what was happening, but I didn't dare turn it on because I had no idea what dangerous thing sshe might do if she got excited. It was excruciating. After I finally (!) left the mother and baby off, I drove home by the most out-of-the-way route I could devise. It still took forever, and I was so relieved to see my hsuband when I finally got home, I started to cry. He had to put his arms around me to quiet my anxiety. Since then,it's hard to believe that it has only been a week since the hijackings - it seems like an eternity ago. I found a New York Times I hadn't opened from the day before the attacks, and I felt as if I were looking at an artifact from a long-ago civilization - which is, indeed, exactly what it was. Nothing seems the same -- everything seems different, and the relationships between everyone, and the things that seem important now are all different. A small example... The neighborhood we live in has been invaded by yuppies over the years. We are older than they by 30-40 years. I feel strongly about our national flag, and have always put it out for the major national holidays. Usually, ours is the only flag out on the street. (I think they felt it was profoundly uncool to put out a flag.) Well, now there are at least 8 flags flying on the block or hanging in someone's window, and some of the other residential blocks in our neighborhood have even more of them! I couldn't believe what I was seeing when we took a walk the other night. Truly, it is a different neighborhood, city, country, world than it was last week. Another interesting effect is that everyone seems to be on best behavior - they are acting kindly towards each other. Surely this won't last, butit's nice while we have it! The wish to do something to help has been tremendous; lines at blood banks have been up to 4 hours, which is great, because we have customarily had a great deficit in blood. I had just given, so I couldn't give again, but Bob gave, and so did Chris and Alisoun. Some kids raised $600 selling lemonade, and donated the money to the Red Cross. Millions have been raised for the families of the victims. Just tonight the governor of New York said that there would be free tuition, a completely free education at New York universities for children of the victims. That will be a big bill.. There were two meetings for worship at our Friends Meeting on Sunday - one at the usual 11 am time, and one which I organized for that evening at 6:00 pm. There are usually 60-80 people at our 11 am service, and of that number, about a quarter to a third are visitors. Yesterday, more than 450 persons showed up!! Most were not Quakers, or hadn't been to a Friends Meeting in years, or had been students at Quaker schools years ago, and some just wanted to sit in quiet with others. There was NO room for another person at all. Apparently the same thing happened at many churches (although I think that coming to a pacifistic Friends Meeting took a bit more serious consideration). The 600 pm service that I organized was called, in very old Quaker parlance, a Meeting for Sufferings. (That's because in the 1600's, so many Quakers were imprisoned or killed or financially ruined that the fmilies joined together to try to help. Out of that eventually grew the Friends World Service and the American Friends Service Committee.) More than 100 people came - mostly Meeting members. I sat as head of Meeting and explained how such meetings arose. It was quite wonderful - one man rose to read the only verse of the Koran I've heard of - the one about how he who saves one person, it is as if he has saved a universe. There were many wonderful speakers, including a Meeting member who was a former American Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. After meeting was over, many of us went to have dinner at an Afghan restaurant to show our friendliness to a business that was probably hurting a lot. The food was delicious, and the proprietor was grateful. I called up two people I have worked with politically in past years, both Muslims, both African-American, just to touch base and to reach out to an Islamic community here which is probably in shock and fear. The first guy is sophisticated, widely-travelled and very well-spoken. He told me that he had been called by three Jewish friends, and now me, all of us calling to wish him well in these troubled times. He was most apreciative, and we had a wonderful conversation, agreeing that if the root causes of the anti-americanism that is so powerful today is not explored, addressed and eased, any military action would only cause more [ersons to turn to terrorism. The other guy is pretty militant, someone who hasn't been exactly easy to work with, and I'm a pretty tolerant person. Nevertheless, I wanted to reach out to him. After a bit of the usual harangue from him saying that the Black community wasn't going to put out any flags because of being so badly treated, he ended up saying that I was the first one to have called him about the attacks and to find out how he was, and that he appreciated the thoughtful conversation.You could have knocked me over with a feather! (BTW, there are PLENTY of flags flying in the Black community just east of where I live.) On Saturday, my husband and I had to do some shopping, and we got a bit lost and found ourselves on a road that went quite near where the Pentagon had been sliced. Pretty soon we were told by police to turn around. Honestly, we weren't morbid accident gapers1 However, in turning around, we could see how enormous the operation to put out the fire and take away the debris is. Acres of equipment and tents for the collateral efforts. Of course the scale of that pales besides the scale of the tragedy in NYC, and there they have to be extra especially cautious because of the closeness of the Hudson River, which could easily pour in to the WTB site if proper precautions aren't taken. So, what can I say? We are all trembling a bit, and give each other extra good hugs. We don't know, but fear what can happen next -- aftera ll, Bob and I live a mere 8 blocks from the White House! And so like so many others, we are putting on flags and contributing to charities for the victims and their families, and hoping that our government will be thoughtful and want to try to address some of the problems that have mde us so hated. Some of aren't behaving well at all, while others have been angels. Clearly life will not be the same -- before seems so far away . There is a heightened sense of reality, the vividness that comes when times are parlous, or so I've heard. We all flock to TVs to find out what the latest story is, while the New York Times and the Washington Post bring us so much information, that we don't have time to distill it all, but can't help reading it anyway, Many of us have been evacuated from work as a result of bomb scares, and that makes us just more jittery. I hope this is going to be a better world, but giving birth involves much pain and suffering. Whatever happens, I hope to do my part. This has been a long e-mail, but I hope it gives you some taste of what it is like here. It is not Lake Wobegone. The first I heard on the attack on America was on my way into work at the University of California San Diego. I have about a 25 mile commute so I listened to the earthshattering news the entire way in. At first I was stunned and in shock. Fear overtook me - I have a brother in Saudi Arabia - would he be safe??? Gradually the fear shock and fear wore off and then anger came into the picture - How could someone murder thousands of innocent people who had done nothing to them??? I found myself very emotional and turning to God in silent prayer several times throughout the day. I watched the news on TV for a long time that night - I can no longer watch the second plane hitting the World Trade Center - that news frontage makes me physically ill. I was and continue to be very, very sad about the whole incidence and the current war. My parayers are now for the entire world - enemies as well as our own people. The famous photo of the 2 angels standing over the weary firefighter still brings tears to my eyes. The courage and love that was displayed that day made me very proud to be an American. Now a great deal of time has passed since the first incidence however I find myself being more empathetic with my loved ones - I always tell my family I loved them before I hang up the telephone and I find I am giving more people the benifit of the doubt. I realize that we are only given TODAY and that we had better make the most of it. The United States of America is the finest country in the world and we must do our very best to preserve that freedom. Lastly, I feel more vulnerable regarding personal safety and financial security however I have always and do more so now just put today in Gad's hands and give thanks for my loved ones. Tell us your story: I will never forget it...We were sitting in Human Growth and Transformation Class at Church of God Theological Seminary discussing transforming events both personally, and historically. We had just finished listening to a recording of the president at that time declaring war after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It was sort of an erry feeling to be doing that and then get the news by way of the presidents assistant. About the time Brian walked in and handed a not to Dr. Johns the news began to flood everyone's computers and groans began to be uttered. We ended class abruptly and proceeded to the chapel to pray. We suspended our regular chapel service to reflect on the tragedy. As I said, I will NEVER forget it!!! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Like all mornings on this day, I usually turn on the T.V. and watch the morning news, but even before I could turn on the T.V. I poured myself a cup of coffee. I thought to myself, 'What a beautiful day.' As I took a sip of my coffee I opened the front door of my house and looked out. The sun was shining bright, birds were singing and I could hear the voices of children in the distance while they hurried to catch the school bus; yeah, it was a beautiful day. Suddenly I thought, 'I wonder what's on the morning news?' I turned the T.V. on and to my horror something was not right? All I saw and heard were T.V. anchors trying to compose themselves, their voices cracking while they spoke, and in the back drop a large black plume of smoke, rising w/anger, sounds of sirens wailing all throughout the city. An image of an air plane exploding into the World Trade Center. They kept playing this horrific scene over and over again? Suddenly, the sweet sounds of singing birds, the laughter of children, gone, and dead silence fell apon me. I stood up from my couch, and with not one word being said my eyes immediately filled with tears of disbelief and grief. I knew that mine and the people of this great nation's world would never never be the same again. My heart never ached so much for an entire day...**eye welling up** A song by the country singer Toby Keith blows me away every time I hear it, "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue!"
