Thinking nothing of it, I asked him a few questions on what kind of plane it was, little or big? He didnt know. He asked if I had talked to my younger sister, who works in NYC, by the Empire State Building. I said "no". So we finished talking about it and I turned on the tv. My father had called back again. We were chatting about who will call Nicky. Thats when we both saw on tv the second plane hit! I was beside myself. My father just yelled "CAll your sister NOW!" Which I did as soon as I hung up with him. She first had no clue of what was really happening. She said she might take the first bus out of the city with some co-workers.She did miss that bus. It took forever to get through to her. Thats when she told me she was going to leave her cell on and try to get out of the city. She also told me there were rumors that the towers were leaning and going to fall. After getting of the phone, the 2nd tower fell. She was already out of her building and on her way to a friends home. No one could leave the city. I couldnt even call my mother in New Jersey. The phone lines were jammed! I was really scared for my sister. Even though she didnt work in the WTC's she had friends that did and around them also. That was really scary. I dont think any will ever forget this day. Its to unreal. I still cant comprehend it. It still feels like it was yesterday that this had happened. I was afraid that all of NYC was going to be bombed! I still feel for all those people who were lost in the WTC. Even though I didnt know anyone in the buildings, they were all innocent Americans, who did not deserve to die the way they did!! Tell us your story: I was sitting on the bus home and I sat relativley close to the busdriver, then suddenly I heard on the busdrivers radio that the WTC had been attacked and the Pentagon also. I was chocked and when the bus stoped at my busstation I ran home and there was my mom and dad watching the hole thing! I sat down, and when I know that this was real I almost started crying! We went to our boss's house (we are a very small office) to watch the news. When speaking with my mother, I learned that the plane that was crashed in Pennsylvania was less than 50 miles from her home. Later that evening, I talked in detail with my then 5 year old son. I have also written a detailed letter to put in his "time capsule." Even though I don't know anyone personally that was devestated by a loss in this tragedy, I know that I was emotionally attached, as an American Citizen. I pray in earnest that God would have His hand in the lives of everyone involved. Jesus, have mercy on those that have tried to destroy our great nation. Thank you for bringing us closer together, and uniting us once again. Father, bring us all to our knees in repentance, and bring us all back home to You. Father, we need You. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up at 5:00 on September 11, 2001. I took a shower, and started to prepare for the day. All of a sudden, I was hit with a very weird feeling. I can't describe it literally, but, I couldn't keep my balance. I have a flex schedule at my job, so I decided to rest for a couple of hours to see if this feeling would go away. I awoke at 7; the feeling was still there, so I called out of work. I sleep with the radio on. I live alone, so it helps with any loneliness issues. I heard something about "a bomb at the Pentagon" on the NPR station, so I jumped out of bed, and clicked on the TV. It was then I heard about a fire; it was 9:15. I was still unaware that the towers were hit by hijacked planes. Just then, ABC replayed the heinous footage of the second plane hitting the South Tower. I immediately called my boss, and said "this was that feeling I was telling you about!" She was stunned, she didn't want to believe that the hijacked airplanes has passengers. She repeatedly asked me if they were "empty". I told her no, she started breaking up. There had been a TV set up in the 2nd flr. conference room, we watched the first tower fall. She got the hell out of the office after that. Philadelphia was evacuated around 10:00 AM ,for fear of the same fate befalling the Liberty Plaza towers. In my apartment, I had one TV tuned to ABC, and the other to the local PBS affiliate, which had the BBC feed. It was a day of watching two perspectives, reliving horrifying footage. I remember vividly the shot of the workers on the upper floors of the North Tower, after the South had collapsed, waving white sheets out of the windows, frantically calling for help. When I spoke to my Mother later that evening, reliving that finally overwhelmed me. I started crying hysterically, saying, "I watched people knowing they were going to die." I have to admit, my first thought on the attack was, "This is an attack on capitalism!" Then, I saw the shot of the people in Palestine dancing. That's when I realized this was a "religious" attack.I don't condone war. However, I will never refer to the events of 9/11 as a "tragedy", only as an "act of war." It was a day of tragedy, a day of loving those close to you, a day of hate, and a day of sadness. When members of the Taliban hijacked planes and flew them into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and a small area in Pennsylvania (Somerset County), the United States was more united than ever. We mourned together not only at home, but all over the country. We mourned for all of the thousands of lives lost on that sad September day, and for all of the people who had lost someone close to them. As I think back and remember this day, I think about the impact it has had not only on myself, but on my family, friends, generation, and on America. When this occurred one year ago, I was in my third period class and an announcement came on that said the Twin Towers had been hit. I really didn?t find this as such big news because I didn?t really know what the Twin Towers were. Then at lunch my friends and I were discussing it, and I got a really uncomfortable feeling. I didn?t really understand why someone would do this. When I got home from school my parents were home from work, and my brother was home from school, and the news was on. As days passed it began to affect me more and more. I felt more patriotic towards my country, by wearing red, white, and blue (a lot), and by really watching my words. I was really expressing my emotions to my family and friends. My family really helped me to understand better, while my friends and I kept busy. The reaction my family had was shock and sadness, but this day made it clear that bad things can happen even in America. In my opinion my generation, and America have been greatly affected by the Terrorist attack. We now have something to never forget. We are presently more united, patriotic, and appreciative of America and all we stand for. I think it has brought us closer together as a whole. When I think of America, I don?t just think of it as the country in which I live in, but as a part of my generation and myself. It has changed my life so I am a better person to America, and to all people around me. Now, when the clock reads 9:11, I no longer just wish that I will never have to dial it, but I take a minuet to say a prayer for all of the lost lives. I think it will be hard to forget this day, and we should not. We should always remember all of the lives lost that day, all of the many heroes who gave their lives in helping, and I should always remember to be the best American citizen I can be. My young baby at the time was only 7 months old, and my other two children were in school. My oldest son Parker was in the fourth grade, and my daughter Chessa was in second. I called my husband to see if he was there for me to drop off his lunch, only to get the most horrible information of my life. Someone who worked for my husband told me that a plane just flew into one of the twin towers and that it may have looked like an accident until the other plane hit, and then it was a terrorist act. I had to sit for a moment and wonder why. I turned on the television to get more information, and then that is when I heard the news that a plane flew into the Pentagon. I called My mother in Upstate New York to see if she heard any of this, and she hadn't. She turned on the television to find out that a plane carrying more people went down in Pennsylvania. I couldn't grasp what was going on. On the way to my husbands job, I'm thinking, My chidren, I have to get my children. I wanted to call the school first to see if they were releasing at that time, they weren't, but parents were thinking like me, we wanted to have our children with us, so it's what I did. My childrens school is right down the street from Andrews Air force Base, and I'm imagining the chaos, my images were right, very chaotic at a point. People were everywhere, cars were everywhere. It was like something out of a bad B-Flick movie where you just can't figure anything out. I got my children out with know problem and on our way with tons of questions to answer, I think I did a good job of answering, of course they were somewhat informed in school, but you know children always have more questions on top of questions and that leaves us scrambling for words sometimes. I will never forget the phone call that I got from a very worried person from California. A man called my number by mistake trying to get a hold of his friend that he said worked at the Pentagon and lived near by where I do, sounding so upset wondering what was going on. I told him everything that I knew and maybe even more that I could think of at the time to calm him down. I think I did a good job of that also because he got in touch with his friend and found out that she was alright and didn't go to work that day. I know this because he called me back to let me know and to thank me for informing him and talking to him about everything he needed. I watched, as every other person did that day and every second wondered why as I said before. I watched every tear that day and shed my own later that evening. I thought of all the people that lost their lives that morning and all the families that lost someone they loved and thank God that I had mine. That day will be a strong memory for the rest of my life, as it will be for everyone. I watched for a very long time on this September 11th day of 2002 all the anniversaries that were shared and had so many thoughts of my own. I just want to say, that we should keep on giving and keep on loving for as long as there is love to give. Thank you for letting me share my thoughts with you. The first word I heard as I struggled out of sleep were DJ Brian saying..."I thought when the first plane hit the building it was an accident, but when the second plane hit..." I sat bolt upright and said to my husband "Something's happened" and ran to the living room and turned on the TV. Both towers were burning as we watched in disbelief. My husband didn't want my 8 and 11 year old daughters to see, but I knew there was no way of keeping this from them. It was a beautiful clear warm September morning. Later I went to Mass and tried to make sense of it all. I still can't. At work all day my two co-workers and I huddled around a 6-inch black and white TV and watched. I called my sister in Denver just to make sure she was OK. It was horribly frustrating to watch all this devastation and be so far away. Everything looked normal here but nobody felt normal. As I walked up to the waiting area where the tv's were, I saw the clinic manager and a receptionist staring at the t.v. I was told that a plane had flown into the trade center. I couldn't fathom what was happening. I thought she meant a small prop plane had flown into it on accident. As I watched the news, it became apparent that I was watching the most significant news story of my lifetime. I couldn't not go back to work. I got chills thinking about all of the innocent people that were killed and injured. After hearing that the Pentagon was also attacked, I was worrying about everyone in the air. It was obvious that any plane in the air was in danger of being used as a missle. I called my girlfriend and woke her up. I told her to turn on the news. She told me that her father was supposed to be flying home from California. She became very upset and tried to get information on her dad. It turned out that he was safe and his flight was on the ground in Arizona. As the towers fell to the ground, I kept thinking of a song lyric that said, "It's the end of the world as we know it." But unlike in the song, I didn't feel fine. Eventually I had to go out back to be alone. I looked up in the sky and asked God to protect us from any further attacks. I had tears in my eyes out there as I thought of the destruction that was wrought upon us. The rest of the day consisted of talking to relatives and staring at the television. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work in the Department of Political Science at Valdosta State University. It was a very busy day, with many students stopping in to talk about advising issues and with many of my own teaching and research projects underway. A little after 9 am my daughter called from Georgia Southern University near Savannah. She had just started college there a few weeks earlier and relayed the infor- mation about the initial attack. She called back many times that morning. The combination of the event with her absence from home made the experience more searing. She was actually watching TV when the first tower collapsed, and she was on the phone with me at the same time. Another instructor came in to say that she had actually seen the second plane hit the second tower. As I went about normal activities, rumors abounded about other sites that were hit. Most of those proved to be untrue. I was surprised that the university held several meetings in the afternoon. We conducted normal business but talked at various points about the nature of the catastrophe. In the evening with my family I watched the continuous replay of events on TV. My reaction was a mixture of disbelief and intense fellow-feeling with the experience those on the plane must have had. At the same time, I tried to imagine what might have led the terrorists to perpetrate these acts after living such seemingly normal lives in American towns. Anger and the desire for retribution and swift justice were important emotions as well. This surprised me somewhat, since am not normally comfortable with the use of violence as retribution. In the coming days, as a political scientist I tried to fit the pieces of the event into the framework of political science and even planned how to incorporate it into courses and research projects. I woke up still in a daze turned on the TV and saw what was happening. At first I thought it was just one of those afternoon movies. I then went to my computer to get on Monster.com. I had signed onto AOL and there it was on the Welcome screen. Thats when I was jolted out of that dazed state. I think I just stared at the TV for like a hour. About 2 minutes into it I just started crying. I just couldn't believe what was going on. I was in total and udder shock at what was happening. I sat online reading the news about while the TV was running. I would say about after 3 hours of watching I was just completely numb. I had talked to a couple of friends on the phone and we all wanted to get together. We went to a local club that night and tried to have fun but that didn't work out so well. We are all completely numb and in no mood to have fun. I know I wasn't because I just couldn't stop thinking of all those people that lost their life and their families. I remember that weekend going back to the club and I asked the bartender a question. See this club during the week had a $8 all you can drink. That night it was not packed like it always but they said that the average amount of drinks per person doubled. He said that they have never had sales like that. For days I was in shock and still to this day I am in shock at what happened that day. I know that is one of the days in my life that I will never forget. When we finished we were coming out of her office when the person at the front desk said that someone had bombed the pentagon, we were astonished. So after a few minutes my cell phone rang and it was my husband asking if I had heard what happened and if I was alright. We hung up and I called my Mom and spoke with her, she was terrified. My Mom's siter flies for American and that is her usual route from Dulles Airport, we were all very scared of what was going on. I went ahead and went home and stayed infront of the television for hours trying to consume everything that was going on. We were in shock, I had to leave to get new tags for my car so we taped the news while we were gone. The car tag place was silent no one was talking, the lady that helped me asked me what was going on and I explained to the best of my knowledge. I went back home and watched the news which we did for about 8 months after. We found out about a week later that my Aunt was ok. She was off that day and lost alot of friends on those 2 American Flights, she was in total trauma state and wouldn't talk with anyone. Me and my husband are both in the Air Force and we both are ready to go fight this war on terror for our country and fellow americans. We will never forget Sept 11, 2001. I worked in a special department called Services, we kept tracked of all cancelled flights etc., Then one of my co-workers came out of our breakroom crying, saying a airplane just crashed, all i could think of was oh no another flight 800. Around 7:50 am, a co-worker arrived and told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. At first we believed that it was a terrible accident. We turned the radio on to get the latest updates. It was then that we heard a second plane had hit the Trade Center. My heart sank....this was no accident. The horrific news just kept pouring in...the Pentagon had been hit and a fourth plane went down in Pennsylvania....thousands estimated dead. Everyone is the office was silent. We cried and held on to each other. Later that evening, as I sat holding my daughter, looking at the unimaginable pictures coming across the television, I struggled to find a way to somehow explain all of this to her. But I could not find the words; I did not understand myself. Who could? Today, one year later, the images are still fresh in my mind and I am no closer to understanding. I was also the daughter of great mother, Esther. Esther had a heart attack at 9:45 AM on Sept 11 2001. I was happy that morning. I was enjoying the picutre perfect day, walking in the park, when a sense of dread overcame me, although I didn't know why. I went home and turned on my computer at approximately 9:20 AM to see headlines on AOL about the crashes. I thought it was a joke at first. I actually went to my normal internet haunt first, before turning on the TV, because I didn't beleive my eyes. Of course the talk of the other people in the chat room told me otherwise, and I turned on the TV in time to watch the first tower collapse. I screamed for my husband to come down. He held me while I cried.. all those people.. all those people. We watched as the second tower fell.. then I thought of my mother, 81, living alone since my father had died almost 3 years before, and called her to break the news to her gently. The phone was answered by paramedics. She had suffered a heart attack. While she didn't die that day, she never left the hospital again, and really ceased being my strong, wise mother at that moment. All that was left was a shell, and that too left this world on Jan 4 2002. I wanted to go get my daughter from school so badly.. at that time we had no idea what would happen next of course. She had a half day anyway, and I went to pick her up at the scheduled time. The other moms were ashen faced.." Did you hear?" "What's happening?" When I told them my mother had had a heart attack they just started at me. To this day people don't know how to treat me.. they either act like I'm a martyr or they act like I didn't say it. I can imagine how they treat those who's loved ones died in the actual buildings! Driving home, I saw several muslim women in full purdah pushing baby carriages.. I just glared at them. Later that day, a muslim convience store worker was obviously happy with the turn of events, while a roofer behind me in the line seethed. I got out of there fast.. in this neighborhood, you don't stick around when there is a fight brewing between a two fisted Irish American and someone acting like an enemy of the state! When we realized at some point the pentagon was involved, I really thought that this was it. I can remember thinking about supplies, how to get out of the city. By the next day, I had taped flags all over my '85 chevy cavilier. I was angry, ready to kick the butt of whoever did this. I still am.. liberal extremists make me want to puke, my mother is dead, my daughter scarred for life by these events, yet assholes still blow up SUVs to make environmental statements. So what if I'm a urban redneck.. I'm damn proud of it! The following weeks were marked by people in this city.. white, black, hispanic, asian.. exchanging looks through car windows on the highway and sharing tears... packed church services... so this urban redneck rejoices in the unity of ZTRUE Americans at that time, and prays we can carry that spirit through the coming elections, though of course we wont, sigh. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: There I was taking everything in my life for granted. I was running late for work, listening to MANCOW on the radio. I had just flipped to the station when suddenly I realized that he (MANCOW) was crying. First I thought it was a prank (as always). MANCOW doesn't cry!! However, I heard the fear in his voice, which made be realize it wasn't a joke; and finally I heard him say that the second twin tower was hit by another airplane. I had no idea what he was even talking about (not having heard about the first attack). However, just the fear in his voice terrified me. Regardless, I thought for sure it was some kind of freak accident. I arrived to work about five minutes later. I ran in the door and turned on the television. That's when I saw the most unbelievable thing I had ever seen in my life. I realized it was intentional and that it was an attack on America. It looked like a movie. I remember thinking, "how could this happend", "who could do such a thing", "is the world ending"? I couldn't keep my eyes off the television for the next two weeks, at the minimum. In those following hours, days, weeks; my whole life seemed so small. I felt this huge burst of wanting to help in some way. I watched all of the families cry over loved ones they had lost. I listened to all of the cell phone conversations during the attack. I heard all of the survivor's horrifying stories. I decided to never, ever take my loved ones for granted. I also decided to be a blood and organ donor. I became more patriotic. I became more interested in our Country and our leaders. I even became more interested in politics and the media and history (things I used to prefer to avoid)! What I mostly pondered on was trying not to watch the news (to stay out of depression) and wondering if the world would end or change for the good. I though: "if this incodent has changed MY life so dramatically, what does that mean for the entire Country"? After 9-11 not only has it changed my way of living, my priorities, my time spent with family, and many other things; I have learned to thank God for every single day that I am alive and for everything good in this world. I am definately a more optimistic person know. And even though it was a horrible attack (understatement) and something that nobody could ever deserve, I am hopeful it will force a change in our world, like it forced a change (for the better) on me. I turned on the set and sat down,only to watch the second tower be hit by what I thought had been a sightseeing plane. I knew then as we all must have, that this was terrorism and radical Muslims were behind it. When the Pentagon was hit, other landmarks.. Capitol building, White House, Liberty Bell, Sears Tower...anything that symbolized America, its spirit or status in the world,seemed targets and I prepared for further horrors. As news broke about the plane in Shanksville, I sensed instantly what must have happened and when reports filtered through news,about the cell phone calls, it was confirmed. At the same time, there was that bizarre,selfish relief that no one I knew was involved. Within hours, I learned otherwise, though thankfully through good news. A friend's daughter, had been late to work for her job on the 94th floor of one of the towers. My daughter's sister-in-law had been sent on an out-of- town assignment from the Pentagon and her Navy fiance' had been scheduled for noon that day. A few months later, through contact with former classmates, there was a tragic note. The youngest son of a classmate had been at the Towers for a breakfast meeeting and arriving early, he headed up to the restaurant 'on top of the world'. He called home to say where he was and that they thought they could hear their rescuers arriving, then nothing more. Then last week, in conversation, a woman spoke of her friend's only son, who had been a chef in that restaurant and we realized they had been together at the end. The point? All of us are connected in this world, by our humanity if nothing else, and inhumane acts rupture that connection briefly. The end does not justify the means. I don't hate Muslims or Islam as a result. As an historian and a Catholic, I can look back on history and see many horrors committed in the name of religion, including my own faith. Humans act with free will, a gift from God, and we often misuse this gift. Let us each attempt to make peace work in our own small sphere. I thought I was unconnected to the horror, but I was. I am also connected to the peace effort. Not likely that anyone will read this, but I am glad to get to express it . It was such a beautiful morning ? you know the kind, a sky of clear blue with just a few puffy white clouds. It was the second week of a new job on Capitol Hill and I was feeling good. As I drove to the Post Office in Old Town Alexandria (the starting point of my daily commute), I heard over the radio that a plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York. The announcers mused that it was surely an accident and I was thinking that it must have been one of those small prop planes that had gone off course somehow. Not thinking any more of it, I walked to the Metro at Braddock Road as usual and got on the yellow line towards the District. After making my transfer at L?Enfant Plaza and getting off at Capitol South, I made my way up to street level where the Cannon House Office Building and the Library of Congress stand on opposite sides of First Street ? the Capitol a short distance away. Having come out of the narrow, darkened tunnels that make up the Metro system, I was again struck by the beauty of that day. But as I walked the two blocks towards my office, I could tell something was not quite right. It wasn?t anything obvious, just a weird feeling I was getting seeing people standing in clusters on the street and talking more than usual to others in the coffee shop that I stopped in on my way. I overheard things like ?a fire on the mall,? ?a white plane flying over the Capitol? ? not knowing what they were talking about, I moved on. When I got to my office, I looked around the corner where a small TV is usually tuned in to C-SPAN so that the lobbyists in my building can watch our Congress in action. Today, it seemed that everyone in the building was standing there watching it together. I put my things in my office and made my way down the hall to where the TV was and saw that is was tuned to CNN. Displayed on the screen were the two towers of the WTC with smoke billowing out of them. Everyone just stood there watching with eyes wide, not knowing what to make of what was going on ? they looked worried. Of course, they knew what I did not at that moment ? it wasn?t a prop plane that hit one of the Trade Center buildings, it was a commercial jet -- fully loaded with fuel AND passengers; it wasn?t just one tower, it was both; and that the Pentagon had also been hit. I was dumbfounded to think that my yellow line train had just pulled through the Pentagon station ? was it at the same moment that the plane was delivering its lethal payload? It all began to come together ? so many people on the street talking about planes and fires. As we continued to watch, we heard that there was a plane unaccounted for and that there was a possible bomb at the State Department. Then, one of the guys who works both in my building and at one of the House office buildings rushed in and said that the office buildings were being evacuated. I started thinking: the missing plane, the Capitol ? bombs, fires. Am I safe here? As I was going over these things in my mind, I was staring at the scene in New York still displayed on the TV screen and then ? the south tower collapsed. I couldn?t believe it. All those poor people! They just went to work like any other day ? just like me! I went back to my office and tried to call my husband. I was trying to decide what I should do ? do I stay at work (two blocks from the Capitol)? With the Hill being evacuated, should I wait until most of the people have left the city? I couldn?t get through on the phone. I tried a few more times then went back to the TV. I heard that the Metro wasn?t running the yellow line over the bridge to Virginia. At this point I was wondering how in the world I was going to get home if I decided to go. I went back to my office and the phone rang, it was my friend out in Fairfax. She said she had called to be sure that I had left ? I told her I wasn?t sure if that was the best thing to do. I thought she was overreacting. Did I really need to panic? She finally convinced me that I needed to leave the city ? but then the question was how? She and I both started trying to call people who we knew would be driving out of the city -- I really didn?t want to go underground in the Metro system ? who knew what could happen? We couldn?t really work out the ride, so I ended up with two choices ? take the Metro or walk. I decided I would try the Metro, but would take the blue line if I had to ? that way was almost totally underground, which I was nervous about, but it still seemed better than trying to walk the seven miles to my house. By this time, the second tower had collapsed. It was time to leave. I went to the Capitol South Metro, hurried in and asked the station manager what the best way was to get to Virginia (not knowing if the yellow line was running there over the bridge, by the Pentagon and the airport). She asked where I wanted to go, I said it didn?t matter. I figured anywhere in Virginia was better than getting stuck in DC. I took the blue line ? it was the first day of many to come where there were no stops at the Pentagon or National Airport. The train got incredibly crowded as we headed through downtown, but people were talking quietly, nobody was panicked. When the train got outside at Arlington Cemetery, I called my husband. I got voice mail. I left a message that I was heading home and that he should too. I loaned my cell phone to the man sitting next to me who wanted to call his wife. When I got off the train at Braddock Road, it was so surreal. I had gotten on in the morning when our world was at peace and gotten off when we were at war. Police officers were on the platform and there was a smell lingering in the air. It caught in your throat even from that distance away ? it was the burning jet fuel from the Pentagon. I made it home to an empty house and turned on the TV ? something I didn?t get very far away from for the next week or two. The news played the scenes of the planes flying into the towers over and over again and of the building collapsing over and over again. When my husband got home, he looked at the TV for the first time that day just as they were showing the south tower collapsing. He had the same reaction that I did when I saw it ? eyes wide, hand over mouth, a sigh of ?oh, no? and then a tear springing to his eye.
