Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was sitting in school, in 2nd period, the subject was math. Well i got my folder, and my materials and sat down. Then all of a sudden, a student teacher came in and told me the news " 2 Hi-jacked planes went through the world trade towers". I didn't believe it at first and then i saw what happened. I was in complete awe because i thought "who would have done such a thing like this"? Well i went to 3rd period with the heaviest heart and nearly wanted to cry my eyes out. Then i went to shop, and nearly saw the beginning, of what was to become world war 3. Then i went home and told my dad what i saw and what i felt. At 8pm, i listened to president bush's address to the nation while i was talking to my youth leader, roberta. As the days went on, i felt more secure and more better about this horrific situtation. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It started out like any other Tuesday. Get up at 4:30. Shower, shave, get dressed and head off to the bus stop to go to the city. The bus pulled in, as usual, at 7:30 into the Park Place stop. I got off and took my daily walk to work. One block down Church Street, cross over to 5 WTC, through the concourse to 2 WTC and up to the 69th floor. Just like any other Tuesday. As usual I unpacked my attach? case and stored my Walkman. Unlocked my desk and took my cup of oatmeal and coffee cup to get a cup of tea. I checked my voicemail and e-mail and started to do my work. Little by little other employees came in. I remember saying hello to Rocco and Jack. I think I saw Brad. I remember seeing Tim go into his office. That?s all I can remember but I?m sure there were others (I later found out That Jessy was in). It was approximately 8:45 am when life as I knew it changed. There was a big bang. An explosion. I looked out my window on the south side of the building and saw paper, lots of paper falling from above. It was almost like a ticker tape parade with big pieces of paper. Then I noticed that other things were falling and they were on fire. We all ran out of our offices to see what had happened. Someone, I?m not sure who, said that either a small plane or helicopter had hit 1 WTC. We decided to begin evacuating people because we just didn?t know what was going on. We told everyone to get their things together and start walking down. We knew that it wasn?t our building but we weren?t taking a chance. No one panicked. Everyone left orderly. I called my wife to let her know that there was a problem at 1 WTC but we were leaving anyway. Tim and I walked over to the north side of the building to see what had happened. When we got to the PC Support area and looked out the window, we were shocked. On the east side of 1 WTC was a massive hole with black smoke and flames coming out. I looked down to the concourse and saw debris all over. Pieces of the Trade Center structure were lying on the concourse floor as well as the roof of 5 WTC. What I saw next will probably never leave my mind. Something, which I couldn?t make out, came flying out of the burning hole. I followed it about half way down before I realized it was a person. I?m not sure if he jumped or not but, when he hit the ground the body disintegrated. Two more bodies came from the burning hole. We didn?t want to look but it was difficult not to. They suffered the same fait as the first. It was too much for me. I left the window. At this point the PA system had an announcement that there was a problem at 1 WTC and 2 WTC was safe. We all relaxed a little and a false sense of security came over us. I remember smelling an electrical burning smell. The remainder of us decided to leave. We said we would make one more sweep of the floor and make sure everyone was out and then evacuate. We went up and down the isles calling to see if anyone remained. If a phone rang we picked it up to let people know that everyone was ok and we were evacuating. When I got up to my secretary?s desk, the phone rang. I picked it up. It was George Ross, a retired executive. He had heard what had happened and was checking to see how everyone was. I told him we were all ok and were about to leave. Then it happened. A loud bang and the building shook like we were in an earthquake. The walls seemed to move back and forth like rubber. The wall next to where I was standing cracked and opened up about an inch or two. I saw Jack come running out of his office and Tim came running from around the corner (although Tim later told me that he was in his office). I still cannot remember if I went back into my office or had my attach? case with me, but I knew I was running with it. I thought that the building was going to fall at that point. I was scared. I followed Jack and Tim into the hall and I noticed that the ceiling had collapsed. Jack ran to the door for the stairs. I saw him hitting it with his shoulder but it wouldn?t open. We turned and ran around to the east side of the floor. As I passed the next passage I looked left and noticed the ceiling had fell and it was impassable. We continued to the north side of the building and around to the center hall. At this point all I saw was the door. The door to freedom. Jack entered first, followed by Tim, then myself. We began our trek down the stairs for the third time. Once for a blackout, once on February 26, 1993, the date of the bomb and now. I ran as fast as I could. I?m not sure that my feet actually hit the steps as opposed to just sliding along the edges of the steps. I didn?t see anyone else behind me except John Olsen, the regional manager. I do not know when but I was in a kind of a group. Jack and Tim had gotten ahead of me. I was with John, Glen O?Leary, Vic Rosa and his friend Bob and a few other guys. We seemed like a team. We checked how each was doing. Jack and Tim called up to me. I confirmed I was still going and was ok. My pager started. First my wife Celia, then my son Steven, then my son Michael, then Celia again and again. I got my cell phone out and tried to call. I had good signal but the circuits were busy. Over and over again I tried to call but the circuits were busy. The pager continued to beep. Floor by floor we went down. I noticed that there were shoes on most landings. I think these were all woman?s shoes. I guess they took them off to get down the stairs faster. I remember my legs starting to feel like rubber on about the 15th floor, but I kept going. Trying my cell phone, checking how our co-workers were doing. Jack or Tim calling to me. Answering them that I?m right behind them. Checking how John Olsen was doing. There was another heavyset man with us. Vic Rosa would open a door every couple of floors to let him get some air. We were all sweating.. I had arrived on the 10th floor platform and remembered that the telephone company central office was on this floor. I decided to get to a phone. I went onto the floor without thinking. Glen followed me trying to stop me. I told him I had to call my wife. I knew if she heard my voice she would be better. I ran into the hall and through a door. I saw a phone and dialed. Celia answered. She was crying hysterically. I assured her I was ok and on the 10th floor and would be out of the building soon. I hung up and Glen and I ran. Glen ran the wrong way and I called to him and we entered the stairway again. We continued going down, down, down. As we got close to the bottom we started to run into more people. The running had slowed. I remember seeing Rick Rescorla, the head of security,with a bullhorn telling everyone to keep moving. I later found out that Rick was one of the missing. We finally got to the bottom and were directed by the police to keep moving. They had us go through the 2 WTC lobby and into the concourse. I noticed two things then. One was this guy from the 66th floor, Louis Torres, He was carrying this woman in his arms. I later found out that he had carried her down from the 64th floor. The second was a woman covered in blood. Her head was bleeding and the bottom of her pants was soaked in blood. I kept saying to the police to get an EMT. They just said to keep moving. Two guys were helping her. They directed us around the concourse to the escalator leading up to the Church Street exit. More police, more yelling to keep moving. I remember thinking that I now have to walk up an escalator and my legs wanted to give out. I kept moving. Up the escalator and through the revolving doors out to the street. I saw hundreds of people across the street. The police kept us moving. We started heading north up Church Street. I do not remember how but we somehow got to Broadway. We must have cut up one of the blocks. It was Glen, Rocco and myself. I remember seeing Tony Farrand and Brad Willcox. We walked fast sometimes looking back in shock at what we were seeing. I continued to try my cell phone with no luck. The public phones had long lines. Glen stopped at some store to get some water and I went into the next store to as to use the phone. I went to the back and there was this guy on the phone. He was an Arab or Indian, I?m not sure. I asked him if I can use the phone and he told me to go to a pay phone. I told him the lines were long and he told me he could only receive incoming calls. For some reason I didn?t believe him. I left the store. When I went back outside Glen was getting out of the store. A number of us had shared the water and we continued our walk to Varick Street. I continued to try my cell phone with no luck. I continued to look to an available pay phone without long lines. Also no luck. We walked fast. Time seems strange. I do not know how much time had passed when we finally got to Canal Street. We turned the corner and I saw 75 Varick Street about 2 blocks away. I saw a public phone with a woman on it, so I waited. All I wanted to do at this point was call Celia and let her know I was all right. The woman finished and I dialed. I remember dialing a few times since I was rushing and making mistakes. Finally I got through to her. Celia answered. She was crying. I told her that I was far away from the building and was safe. I had hoped I was telling the truth. She didn?t believe me. I reassured her that I was all right and told her I was heading to Varick Street, our contingency site, and that I love her. I hung up the phone. With that I heard a thundering sound. I looked up from the phone and saw the two towers burning. Then the top of 2 WTC started to go down and it disappeared into the smoke. I stood with my mouth open. I was numb. I could not believe what I was seeing. The building that I saw going up 30 years ago, where I had spent the last fourteen years working, was now falling, disappearing into the smoke and fire. The group of people standing on the corner just stood there in shock. I heard many people say ?Oh my God?. Glen and I continued onto 75 Varick Street. We went to the 3rd floor, our contingency site. When we arrived there were many people there already there. I think I went to the front desk. There were communications people sitting there. I think I saw Frank Giordano, Evelyn, Lisa, Pauline and some others. All I wanted to do I call some people to tell them I was ok. I went to the back room where the NCC was and found a phone. I saw Mike Eng and he asked me to contact ILX to get entitlements put on the workstations. I told him ok but called my wife again to let her know I was still ok. I called my son Michael to let him know that I was ok. I then called my brother. When he heard my voice he burst out crying. I do not think I ever heard Paul cry. He said he thought he had lost me. I consoled him. I asked him to call the nursing home and have them tell my mother that I was ok. I also asked him to call Rhoda, our sister. I left the back room and walked through the communications room. I saw Pat Haskins. We hugged and told each other that we were ok. We now had work to do. I called Jeannine from ILX to tell her that we needed the entitlements turned on the 300 workstations at Varick Street. She was crying when she heard my voice. She hadn?t heard from anyone from the 69th floor and thought we were all dead. I assured her we were all alive. We all got out in time. She said she would page me when the work as done since phones was hit and miss. I do not how much time had passed. Time was irrelevant. I kept busy making some phone call to vendors. Someone said the there was food. I waited a while. Then Jack, Tim and myself went to get some sandwiches. After we took the food we were told to go the rear of the building because there was a bomb scare. They said that a truck had pulled up in front of the building and the driver ran. The police were going to check it out. We all went to the other room and Steve Van Wyk, the IT executive, started to speak. No one could hear him and someone gave him a bullhorn. He started to tell us that he was proud of us for getting out of the building safely. He then started to talk business. I cannot remember anything else he said. We then heard an announcement to evacuate the building. We all walked down the 3 floors to the lobby and out the Canal Street entrance. Little by little people filled the street. We were then told to go up to the Morgan Stanley office at 1585 Broadway. Jack, Tim, Rocco and I tried to regroup our staff in order to make the long walk. Everything was strange. No one was really sure what to do. Then someone said that they are evacuating 1585 Broadway. I then decided to try to go home. I called Michael to tell him to meet me so we could get out of the city. I told him to meet me at Canal Street and the Westside Highway. It seemed that everyone was in small groups standing by the entrance to the Holland Tunnel. Jack and Tim and a group of people started to walk north toward Penn Station. I wound up with Frank Giordano. I do not know where Rocco went. We tried to keep the New Jersey people together and I found myself standing with only Frank. We went over to the west side to wait for Mike. At this time Frank said something to me that sent chills up my spine. He told me that he went out with his brother this past Sunday. He was telling him that he had a dream on Saturday night. The dream was about him going to work on Monday and a plane hit the Trade Center and it fell into the river. I thought he was joking until I looked at his face. I knew he was serious. I could not believe he had a premonition about what had happened. We stood there for some time. There were police and EMT standing around in groups. It seemed that they were getting their orders. I went over to one of the policemen and asked about the Hoboken Ferry. He told me it was not running and we had to go to 30th street. I tried to call Mike on my cell phone with no luck. I tried Frank?s cell phone and got through. He was at 15th Street and 2nd Ave. I told him to go across town and we?ll meet him on 15th and the west side. Frank and I began to walk uptown. What happened next broke the tension a little. Frank and I were walking in the street and Frank put his hand in his pocket. He pulled out a Tootsie Roll and asked me if I want it. I couldn?t believe he took the time to go into my office to get some Tootsie Rolls from my desk. He told me that he had them from before. Frank said he had the last Tootsie Roll from the WTC and he placed the wrapped in his pocket. As we walked and talked about what had happened and saw different cars and trucks coming from downtown covered in soot. It almost looked like snow coming off the roof of the vehicles. Then an SUV passed us. I yelled out to get a lift. The Guy slammed on his brakes as asked where we were going. I told him 15th Street. He told us to hop in. This guy was in his office by City Hall and witnessed the attack. He drove us to 15th Street and let us off wishing us luck. We crossed the street to get out of the sun and waited for Mike. It seemed like a long time. We continued to talk about what had happened and discuss how we would get home. Finally, I saw Mike coming down the street. I couldn?t wait to hug him. He crossed the street and we hugged. I held him very tight and told him that I Love him. He told me the same. I remember crying as I held him. I couldn?t wait to get home and hold Steve and Celia. We started walking up the Westside Highway toward 30th Street. We finally got to the Weehawken Ferry. There were hundreds of people on line and busses dropping off more. We got on line and began to wait. I had no idea what time it was. The line seemed to move quickly as boats filled. People heard us talking and asked us what we experienced. We told them and they looked at us in fear at what we had been through. Finally we got on a boat for the next leg of our journey to New Jersey. It took a long time to get across since there were more boats then docks. I remember calling Celia to give her a status of the journey. I also called Paul. The ferry finally docked and we headed for busses to go to Hoboken. Mike couldn?t get in touch with Anne, his fianc?, so we had to go home by train. We lucked out and got on the 2nd bus. The bus ride was slow. There was a lot of traffic. We were about to blocks from the train station and not moving, so we decided to get off the bus and walk. I remember seeing tables with food and bottled water. I?m not sure who was supplying the stuff but was happy to see that everyone was helping out. We went into the train station looking for information. A man with an NJ Transit jacket came over to us and asked if he could help. I told him I wanted to go to Belmar. He said the next train was leaving in 4 minutes on track 14, the other end of the station. Mike said he was going to try to get home. Anne was at her parent?s house since the roads were closed. I really didn?t want Mike to go home but he insisted. I said goodbye to Frank. He was taking another train. I hugged Mike again and told him that I love him and told him to be careful and ran to make the train. I got through the gate and noticed the train was packed like sardines. I knew I would not get on this train. I asked when the next train was and was told it was at 5:09. For the first time since the first plane hit 1 WTC I looked at my watch. It was 4:45. I couldn?t believe a whole day had passed. I had no conception of time. I called Mike on his cell phone and told him what had happened. He wanted to wait with me but the gate was closed and they wouldn?t let him in. So, I waited alone on the platform. A couple of guys were talking about what had happened. I kind of got into their conversation and told about my experience. They looked at me in horror at what I had been through. I girl over heard the conversation and asked me about a friend of hers on the 104th floor. She wanted to know if she could have made it out. I told her I really didn?t know although I thought that anyone above the crash probably didn?t make it. The train finally got in about 5:15 and left at 5:25. I called my friend Daryl and asked him to pick me up in Belmar. The ride home seemed long. Looking out the train window I was able to see the heavy smoke from where the WTC used to be. It made me sad. My hands began to shake and I had to keep busy so I decided to call my family to let them hear my voice. I called Rosie and George, Mary and Sal, Miriam and Jimmie and Junior. I called Celia a few times also. The train finally got into Belmar. I got off the train ant saw Daryl. I walked up to him and we hugged. He said her was glad to see me. I told him the same. I couldn?t wait to get home to see Steven and Celia. We finally pulled up in front of the house and Steven came out to meet me. I hugged him tight and told him that I love him. He said he loves me also. I started to cry again. I was so glade to see him. I went into the house and down the hallway when Celia came out of the den. We embraced. I held he as tight as I could. We kissed. I was so glade to be home in the arms of my LOVE. I knew that things would be better. Ellen came out of the den. We hugged and she also said that she was glade I was all right. We went to the kitchen. They had ordered pizza. I was not hungry. All I wanted was water. My friend Marc called to see how I was. He said I only had seven lives left. I told him I was no cat but I was ok. Daryl and Ellen left after a while and Celia told me to go inside and rest. I changed my clothes. I did what she said and turned on the television. I had not seen the news footage of what had happened. As I turned on the TV the first thing I saw was the second plane hitting my building, I looked at it in shock. All I saw was the plane hitting my floor, although it was about 10 floors above. I started crying saying that I should be dead. The plane hit my floor. Celia comforted me saying that it did not hit my floor and I was alive and home. I cried. I did not sleep that night. Every time I closed my eyes I saw the plane. There are many things in this story that I think I still cannot remember. Hopefully they will come back to me in time. The important thing is that I was home with my love. The following weeks were an emotional rollercoster. I knew that getting through it would be tough but with the support of my family and friends, I knew that I would get through it. Tell us your story: Remembering 9/11 School at Boston College High School started at 8:30 am, as usual on 9/11/01, and my train ride to school was like any other. My second period class, AP Government, starting at 9:30am was held in one of my school's computer labs. The purpose of the class was to research information for my class' government textbook, but suddenly my teacher announced that a plane had "accidentally" flown into one of the World Trade Centers in New York. Quickly, everyone in the class went from the government website to cnn.com and other news web pages. As the class continued, pictures of the first plane flying into one of the towers began to appear on the screen of my computer. Then my teacher started explaining that he thought that it was a deliberate act, because planes just don't "accidentally" fly into the largest building in New York. I was shocked that something like this could happen. It was now thirty minutes into the class and all of the major web pages of news organizations were running ridiculously slow, due to the numbers of people at work logging on, attempting to find out what had happened. My class was most likely the first to find out about what had happened in my entire school, because we had been doing research on the internet and everyone else was in classrooms. As class was ending the word terrorist was mentioned and everyone was in disbelief. Personally, I thought it still could possibly be a tragic accident. The bell rang and it was now 10:10am. Perhaps, that forty-minute class I had will be the most important and memorable class that I will ever have . I went to lunch, which started at 10:15, and a sickening buzz swept through the cafeteria that a second plane had smashed right into the World Trade Center. Normally, while eating, there is your regular joking around with friends and eating whatever junk you can buy, but that day there was a silence over everyone in the caf. I remember just not believing what was happening. I was stunned and a little scared, because in the back of my mind, I was thinking of traveling through Boston, a large city like New York, with tall buildings, on a train. As the day unfolded at school the seeds of 9/11 were already becoming planted, engraved into everyone's mind. I went home when school ended at 2:40 with two friends I normally ride the train with. The train was filled with incredulous people and I remember just wanting to get home and be with my family. On that train ride, I felt lonelier than ever in my life. At home I watched TV, still stunned and shocked, until I fell asleep. That day changed my life in one enormous way. I realized the true value of life and how precious it really is. I never thought that I would witness bodies just falling from buildings like rag dolls. Images like that are indented into my mind. They are disturbing and a strong reminder to me that I should never take a day of my life for granted and I should feel lucky for everything I have and more importantly, value the things I haven't lost. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Hello everyone. My name is Amanda Barker. I am 14 years old, and here is my story of where I was on September 11, and how it totally changed my life forever. I was in the Psych. ward for attempted suicide, and this wasn't my first time being ther for the same reason. Since I was the first to wake up that day, I went to the "den" and turned on the tv. The first thing I saw was horrifying. I saw a plane crash into one of the towers. So I ran to the staff room and pounded on the door, yelling for the staff to come see what was on. All the staff came rushing out to the tv. We stood in awe, watching the horrifying events before us. Pretty soon the whole floor was crowded around the tv, each of us trying to watch. That day, we did nothing else but watch the reporters repeat them selves over and over, a somewhat different change each time as the day went on. I finally remembered that I had a friend in New York. She lived in Manhattan, and I began crying. She had helped me through the past rough years, and I was scared that I was never going to see her again. One of the staff took me to my room to help me calm down, but I couldn't. I wanted to help, just anything at all. But since I couldn't leave, all I could do was watch, and pray. For the next few days I was a zombie. Thinking of nothing else. Then I began to realize that I had so much to live for. These people died, without a chance to say goodbye. Suicide has not been in my thoughts since that day. My best friend had died for all I know, because I haven't talked to her since. It's been almost a year now, and I still grieve for the losses of so many. But it changed me forever. I hope they are at peace, and may the goddesses bless and protect their families, and our great nation. Tell us your story: I remember sitting in my second hour U.S. history class, when a member of the staff opened the door and told us to turn on the TV to channel 10. Class was almost out, so students were already putting away their notebooks. When the screen came up, the twin towers were on fire. The whole class just sat there. Nobody said anything. Tom Brokaw's voice was in the background. I just thought it was a mistake... After the bell rang, students crowded the hall, and everyone seemed to talking about the same thing--the twin towers. Students were crowding around the televisions in the hall, waiting to hear more news. The Pentagon had also been hit. When I entered my third hour, Lit/Comp 10, I saw my teacher sobbing next to the phone. She kept redialing, and hanging up. Half the class was there, so I took a seat next to the door. The TV was on once again. It still hadn't hit me that people had died. For some reason, I was positive the planes were empty and the buildings were already evacuated. Looking back, it was a loss of innocence for me. As we watched in horror, the second trade center was hit. People started to gasp, and that's when I think it really hit me. This was no accident. The screen was filled with smoke. Megan, a girl in my class stood up and asked to use the phone. Her father was in Washington D.C. I started to think if we had any relatives or friends that lived in NYC. Within seconds, Tom Brokaw gasped. We all turned to the screen. The first twin tower slowly collapsed. It looked like it was a scene out of a movie. Mrs. Larsen put the TV on mute, and we sat in a circle discussing the events... When I got home, all the channels were talking about the same thing. All these theories came up about reasons why the Taliban and Osama bin Laden did what they did. I remember being defensive, and not understanding why they accused the middle east immediately. I heard the garage door open, and slowly came down the stairs. My mom asked me if I had heard what had happened. DUH. We talked about our trip last December to to NYC. I had traveled so much, but NYC was still the place to be. It was so livey and sophisticated. It has been exactly one year since the event took place. Things are still not the same. A friend of mine went to visit the site, and said the area is not finished being cleaned yet. Today, our school will honor the victims and firefighters that died on 9/11. It's a great feeling watching your community pull together. It's just sad that took such a horrific event, for this to happen. A parent came in saying something had hit the World Trade Center in New York. We went to the back and turned on the television. I couldn't believe what I was seeing...maybe a movie? Was it real? We continued to watch and had parents asking what was going on so we decided to bring the television to part of the waiting room, away from the play area for the kids, where the parents could watch. Silence from parents and our office staff except for muffled tears and whispers of disbelief. Before we left the office that day, we stood in a circle, held hands and prayed for the victims, their families and our country. A year later there are still tears and prayers but a renewed sense of pride for our country and dependence on God. May God Bless America. Tell us your story: My Story is as Follows I was working that morning in WTC # 1 on the 23rd floor when the 1st plane hit, like everyone on our floor I was taken by what was first the Crash of the plane & then the Explosion it sent Through the Building. At that time I did not know it was a plane that caused the explosion so I had no fear because I felt the explosion was above and new we had to get out. My first reaction was to make sure no one panicked being one of the fire wardens of the floor I made sure everyone got off the floor in an orderly fashion. There were some people who sat at their desk waiting for word on what to do but I assured them that the best thing to do was to get out some women was on the floor praying as I picked her up I told her the best thing to do would be to pray in the Stairs going down, I also had to stop the Stock delivery Guy from trying to get his stock wagon out through the doors. That was mainly it I checked Bathrooms (both) to make sure I was the last one on that floor. Then I made my descend down to the lobby which when I came Across a man on the 20th floor who was having a asthmatic attack he didn?t want to move now the Fireman asked 2 men can volunteer to carry this man down so I was one of those Men we carried him to the Lobby were he then said he can walk on his own then the other man left so he used my shoulder to lean on as we went through the lobby to get outside it was then when he dropped his pump that a cop came over to help that I asked what happened he then told me that someone flew a plane into build 1 and just 10 minutes ago someone just did it to wtc 2 also, So as I was in the staircase another plane hit tower 2 . Now as I was leaving the trade center through borders bookstore a daily news photographer took a picture of me with the man I carried down. And I didn?t know this picture was available in a gallery at 420 east 9th street with other pictures of that day until a friend of mine noticed it in a store by the trade center in March of 2002. Now Because of this picture I was able to find out who the man was because I got him to a ambulance on Broadway and they took care of him and I just went home by the way of the Brooklyn Bridge. The man worked for the same company, I didn?t know him I just came down and saw someone and helped him. His name is William Garrido I called him in April and he was pleased to here from me and very grateful of me for helping him that day. Getting back to that day I also want to say that as I was going over the bridge the Tower 2 collapsed and by the time I arrived to the Brooklyn side of the Bridge the other building was history too. My first thing was to go to my wife?s job so she new I was Ok I had no way of getting in touch with her other wise. She was sooo happy to see me and we both went home to get our kids who were in school at the time and to asure or families that I was OK. Tell us your story: I remember walking down the science hall between second and third hours, when Kim ran to me she exclaimed that the Pentagon and the World Trade Center had been hit. I stepped in front of the door of one of the science rooms and saw on the television the two towers burning with all of the smoke billowing out over the city. Immediately, I run to my Physics Honors class and stepped through the door and just froze. My teacher was just standing there looking at the screen. He simply mentioned that we wouldn't be doing distance v. time and velocity v. time graphs today. It just didn't seem important anymore. After the bell rang for class to actually begin, we stood about half the hour not saying much. We slowly began asking who the prime suspects were and how each of us had heard of the attacks. During this time, I think they showed the first footage of the second tower being hit, which would have been about 10:30am. We simply died. Some people cried some more and others just turned away. Eventually, we needed to switch classes again, but this time my AP Statistics teacher simply wouldn't let us watch more of the same footage. I can say that now, I think she made the right choice, but at the time, we couldn't understand how she could expect us to do something different. She understood that all we would do for the rest of the day would be watch the news, and she felt that listening to the rumors was a poor idea. The day dragged on in much the same way. I didn't complete my homework and most of the classwork for the next day was postponed. It took a couple more days before we could do anything again in school. Tell us your story: I was in my car , in a parking space listening to 96.5 TIC FM Radio Station, as I always do on my very short 1/2 mile drive to work from my children's school. The very second I was about to turn off the car, the newsman from the radio station, John Elliott came on and said a plane had just hit the WTC. I listended for a few seconds and hurried into the building. I got to my desk and immediatly turned on the radio, the same station was on. I work in a one attorney law firm and I am the only full time employee. I didn't say anything to my boss, who was in his office. I sat at my desk and continued to listen. My boss came out of his office and I told him a plane had hit the WTC. As I continued to listen in horror as John Elliott and Gary Craig, the morning show host, said the second plane had hit the other tower. I was speachless and there was a lump in my through and tears streaming down my face. I couldn't speak. I called my co-worker who comes in at 10:00 a.m. I asked her if she was watching tv or listening to the radio. She was not. I told her to turn on the TV. I also told her to bring a TV to work with her. She did. All day we watched in disbelief about what was happening to our Country. The rest of the day was just a blur. How could we work or concentrate when the NYC and DC and PA were under attack. I could barely speak. My only connection to New York is a childhood friend who was like my older sister. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and they both worked at NYU. Most of the time they traveled to work together on the subway. This day, they went at different times. Their stop was either one or two stops after the stop under the WTC. Her husband was at work in his office when the first plane hit. My friend, was still on the subway. She arrived at her stop safely, then she found out what was happening. She immediately went to her husband's office. They were ok. In the hours and days to come after the attacks, all I could do is watch and listen and cry. How could we not grieve. All those innocent people, all the families that would never be whole again, all the heros who selflessly saved so many lives and then lost their own. In the days to come, I spoke with my 10 and 5 year old. It was more difficulty for my 5 year old to really understand what was going on. We donated water and snacks that were brought to the searchers in NYC. I wanted to help in some way, I wanted my children to fell like they were helping in some small way. Watching TV today, one year later, the lump was in my throat again. I flew my American Flag, put up a "united we stand" sign and said the Pledge of Allegience. This day will never be forgotten. Tell us your story: A very good friend in Newfoundland informed me of the tragic news on September 11,2001, immediately when I logged onto a chatline for our daily visit. I was in total disbelief reading what was sent until I tuned to the television news and witnessed with thousands the terrible scenes being reported. I could not begin to imagine the extent of the damage, the confusion and distruption to life in New York and Washington, D.C., the realization of loss in human life, nor the deep anger toward those who commited such a heinous and cowardly act. Equally, however, I was deeply emotionally affected witnessing from miles away, hundreds of police and firefighters responding without regard to their personal saftety to assist others. Seeing hundreds of individuals helping one another escape from the buildings or obtain medical aid caused me to appreciate how strong and caring Americans are. As the day progressed I became more and more confident that we WOULD SURVIVE and WOULD NOT allow such acts to diminish the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Tell us your story: I worked at the Pentagon for over a year, so I personally knew many of the building workers who were killed or injured in the wedge where the plane crashed. I was attending a trainging class in Crystal City, about five miles from the Pentagon. When the order came to evacuate the city, I could get no specific information from the police officers and security guards. I feel they were making up things as they went along. I found a telephone line where I could connect my E-book reader device and download copies of THE WASHINGTON POST and THE NRE YORK TIMES. These news reports gave me a quick briefing as to what was happening during the terrorist attacks. I then jogged the five miles to the Pentagon to see if I could help out. Since the fire and rescue crews were in place, I used my knowledge of the building and office spaces to help direct the rescuers who brought out the people who were trapped in the wreckage. I stayed at the site for several more days to help direct the rescue teams locate some of the bodies. Then, when I felt I had done all I could do, I went home. Tell us your story: I was teaching a first grade class, on this clear, crisp, not a cloud in the sky day when I first found out that a commercial airline hit the trade center. Like most, I was in complete shock when I found out that both the towers collapsed and that America was under attack. Its hard to put into words what I felt that day....we were dismissed early, so that everyone could get home to their loved ones. I watched T.V. all day in disbelief as I watched those horrific acts over and over again. I hugged my little girl and thanked God that no one close to me was in the city that day. My heart still aches for those who's lives were so tragically taken from them, as well as for their families. I believe that we all walk around with a hole in our heart that can never be filled. However, I also believe that justice will prevail in some way,shape or form. Yes, our lives have been changed forever..btu we still have our memories...no one will ever be able to take that away! Tell us your story: on sept 11th i was anticipating surgary the next day for colon cancer. i had called one of my credit card companies to get my insurance started so they would start paying my monthly payments. the customer service rep on the line asked me what was going on in ny. i didn't know what she was talking about so she told me to turn on my tv. i was shocked and realized my cancer surgery was nothing compared to what was happening. I heard about it at work and came home and watched it on T.V. with my wife. We knew the world has changed and mourned for the loss of so many innocent victims. 2. Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I do a lot of traveling with my job and see it at every airport. 3. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? To never happen again. 4. Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: We were holding a Forecast conference that day. It was the last day of the conference. Over 300 burly steel men - mostly Presidents and Vice Presidents - were gathered in large rooms to hear what the economy would bring to the steel industry the next year. They didn't know it at the time, but their coveted forecast would soon be obsolete. That morning, before any of it happened, I was telling my co-workers that I dreamt the night before of planes crashing and debris falling and fire so hot it woke me out of my sleep. When I found out what happened, I realized my nightmare had become reality. I made a mad dash for the phone to call my boyfriend who worked only 15 miles from Ground Zero. Thankfully, he was all right. The details were sketchy and he knew as much as I did. Just that it happened - that maybe it was an accident. Then the second plane hit. Within a matter of minutes, the conference came to an abrupt halt. The hotel wheeled out tv carts and everyone scurried to the TVs to see what happened. The pandemonium of it all was so heart breaking that I had to leave the hotel. I got back to my parents home. I turned on the TV, flipped on MSNBC, cuddled up with their dogs and watched as the first tower collapsed. I was stunned. I opened my mouth to scream but nothing came out. All of the sudden, the impact of what happened erupted inside of me and I broke down. I cried, I sobbed, I screamed, I yelled. How dare anyone do this to us!? I was never so angry in my life. I was never so full of despair. Each time they played video of the plane crashing into the towers, it was like someone punching me in the heart. I remember what I wearing that day. Even down to the talisman I was never without. I haven't worn it since. It would be like reliving it all again in such a personal way. I couldn't get enough of the news coverage. I watched through the entire night. I barely slept, but when I did it wasn't peaceful. One year later, there has not been a day that's gone by where I haven't thought about what happened. When people ask what they could do to help, I say all they need to do is remember and to never forget. September 11, 2001 was a day that brought big, strong men and everyone in between down to their knees. It brought us closer as a community, as a family, as one. From this terrible tragedy, we somehow grew even stronger. Faith was restored in the American Spirit. Fifty years from now, when my grandchildren ask me where I was when it was September 11, 2001, I'll tell them exactly what I told here. I won't forget. Ever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was a day off of work for me. At the time of the attacks, I was driving in my car, on my way to the local supermarket. I noticed the cars on the expressway near my house were at a standstill, but I just figured there was a bad accident. Then I put on my radio to a music station (which almost never has any news on it). I heard someone on the station say that one of the Twin Towers had been hit by a plane. I thought at first that it was a terrible accident (and also thought that probably no one - in the building, at least - had been hurt, since they were strong steel buildings). That is, I didn't take it too seriously. I even thought maybe this radio station was playing a sick joke, so I switched to another station, only to hear the same report. This station also said that they would now be going off the air (they never did this before, but they are located in midtown Manhattan). It was about this time I heard that the other Twin Tower was hit, too. Now I understood why the radio station was evacuating the building. I went to my mother's house to find out if she has heard from any family members who worked in the area. She heard from my sister soon after (whose building had been evacuated). My sister had to spend the rest of the day in Brooklyn, because the authorities weren't letting anyone over the bridge to Staten Island. But no one had heard from my sister's husband, who worked one block away from the Twin Towers. At this point we didn't know if his building had been hit, too, but we fould out (after about 4 hours of waiting) that he was okay and had been directed to New Jersey (from what I understand, all the workers in Manhattan - all 10 or 15 million of them - had been evacuated from their buildings, and from most of Manhattan, too). When I first realized how terrible things were over there across the water, I wanted to go over there and help. But, the authorities weren't letting anyone into Manhattan, and besides, I am not a strong or physically fit person, and would probably get in the way more than help. All I could do was pray. For some reason, I felt I should pray specifically that the people who were trying to get out of the Twin Towers would leave the buildings in an orderly fashion (so that the maximum number of people would survive). I remember praying about this for hours, until the ordeal was over (that is, until everyone who could get out was safe). I have heard people say, "Where was God when all this was happening?" (Implying that God should have prevented it.) Why do people forget that the human race was given a free will, which includes being free to kill if they wish. Since Eve first ate the forbidden fruit (God told her specifically not to eat from just that one tree), people have been doing ungodly, unloving things. But God isn't telling them to do these things. He wants us to do His will (love), but won't force us to. I know where God was that day. He was in the firefighters, police officers and others who helped save lives; in the office workers who remained calm and helped their co-workers. I could go on and on but simply stated, he was in millions of people that day and the days that followed. God is spirit, and when he does something, He does it in spirit. He acts through the hearts of people who are acting in love (concern for fellow man). To me, this was more real than if He had come out of the heavens in physical form and fixed our problems. I was more amazed at the grace bestowed on us that day, than the evil that caused it. Like many others, I cried for days about the lives that were lost, but I truly believe they have gone to a better place. New York City has been known as of the coldest, mean-spirited cities in the world, but I think that image is now forever changed.
