Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The day started off like all other school-days do. I went to weightlifting at 6 then did some speed exercise drills. Football being the sport in mind while completing these exercises. Around 7 I took a shower. At half past, I was in the cafeteria reading a book. By quarter to 8 my friends were at the table chatting away. The bell finally rang and I went to my first class, chorus. Now, I'm very musically inclined and sometimes stare into space during rehersal. I wasn't chalanged at all, hence, I let my mind wonder. The bell rang again and it was time to hit my second class, jazz band. During the passing period I overheard an upperclassmen say something about something going on in New York. I, assuming he was full of nonesense, merrily walked to jazz band. I arrived at 9:20 in class. The radio was on. I didn't think much of it because we often listened to jazz during class. I walked over to my trumpet and got it out. It looked nice. Silver. Made by Bach. The best trumpet in the whole district I had no doubt. I took out my mouthpiece, stuck it in my mouth (to warm it up and get my lips ready) and started to remove my percious instrument. A voice rang out. "Joe, you don't need that." "What?" I replied. "Yeah, I don't think you'll need it today." It was my band teacher. She turned up the radio. By the time the rest of the students filtered in we were all around the radio. It was about 9:30 now. We sat and listened for almost the whole class. We came to the conclusion that we did not want to wallow in sadness anymore. For the last 20 minutes or so of class we played our music. The next class was Spanish 2. By that time the main office had sent memos to every teacher to have them read during the 3rd class of the day. My teacher read the memo to the class. Some students were shocked that such a thing had happened. Others expressed that they had already known the of the ongoings. I felt horrible. Though I had no connections to New York at all, a strange uneasiness brewed in my stomach. Questions were buzzing around my head. Who did it? Why? Were more planes going to crash into all the major cities around the United States? It came time for lunch. I decided that my stomach might feel better with some food in it. I brought a turkey sandwhich from home. I sat at a large circluar table with my friends. There were about 8 of us there. Suddenly, the lights in school went out. After a breif moment of silence outbursts rang wild. "Ahhh! Terrorists!" Some said. "It's the end!" Others said. Lound vulgar language could also be heard. After school ended football was afoot. After football I went home. The media was full of people jumping to conclusions. My fathers asked me what my thoughts were. I told him that I was not going to conjure an opinion until more actual facts were known. I fell asleep that night knowning my life would not return to normal for a long time. Tell us your story: Being in Minnesota I lost no one close but felt like I lost brothers and sisters, in the many lost lives of all ethnic varieties. When the first plane hit I was at my desk working. One of my co-workers came into our department in one of the smaller and older buildings in downtown Minneapolis to tell us there was an accident in New York and an airplane had ran into the World Trade center and it was on fire. We sat with mouths hanging open in disbelief. The manager of our floor immediately brought out the training television set and turned on the news to scenes of horror. The television we too late to see the second plane hit and we all bowed our heads in prayer and prayed for the victums and their families. We were told that we could go home if we so desired as one of the main buildings, the IDS tower, had been closed for security reasons and many businesses had already closed. As I rode home with a friend of mine we sat in disbelief and awe at the quietness of a sky devoid of airtraffic. We thanked God that more major areas of our country weren't hit by the terrorists attacks. My one hope today, on the first anniversary of that tragic day is that we learn to be on gaurd but do not learn to hate but to love. My prayer today is that the families and friends of the victims find a peace in the passing of time and the love poured out to them my the Ameicans and other counties on this tragic loss. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: (I'll try this again! Hit some key too soon....) We were at the end of a sailing trip on the western Mediterranean. Most of our fellow travelers had left for the US, they thought, the morning of the 11th. Theirs is another story. We had elected to stay a few days longer in Malta and, that afternoon, were told the horrifying news by a salesclerk in a music store. We fled back to the hotel and were glued, crying, to the TV. The Maltese were kind and helpful. We were able to use the hotel email to email home to New Jersey to check on our NYC and Washington, DC area family and friends. A shopkeeper, hearing our accents, came out of his shop as we wandered aimlessly, asked if we were Americans and told us how sorry he was. Our little Valetta embassy had no condolence book but did have touching pictures on the walls, crayoned by children in the international school. We were lucky, thanks to our travel agent, not to be sleeping in the airport in London when we got there on Friday. On top of that, the CEO of the Stafford Hotel did an extraordinary thing. He did not charge any of us stranded Americans for our lodgings in the days before we could get flights home! He said that his grandfather had died in World War I and his father fought in World War II. His father told him,"Never forget what the Americans have done for us twice in this century." Now, he saw his chance to try to repay that debt through the Americans in his hotel. The memorial services in the great cathedrals; the sea of flowers, lines of people and touching notes in Grosvenor Park opposite our US embassy; the volunteers standing there with boxes of tissues; the calls that poured into the embassy from as far away as Wales, offing to drive down and take home stranded Americans...... Nothing brought it all home like getting home. Our New Jersey home county, Bergen, is a commuter county to New York City. Every town along our rail lines that connect to the tubes under the Hudson River that took the commuters to the station under the Twin Towers....every small town had lost inhabitants. Eight or nine people from a town of 2,300 is alot. Multiply that by all the small towns. If you didn't know someone, yourself, you knew someone who knew someone. It has been a year now and still the New York "Times" carries a regular page of more pictures and more vignettes....and is not finished. Real people with real lives, loves, hopes.... And every time we see the NYC skyline from our side of the river, I still cry. No matter what they build there, those of us who saw it as it was, whether we loved the Towers architecturally or not, will carry that skyline picture in our minds and hearts forever. I hope it will somehow come to almost balance the other, horrifying picture that will always reside there, too. And every time we see the skyline of the city from our side of the river, I still cry. Right after I got in and was checking my systems, one of the other lab technicians who was not working that day came running into the lab and grabbed the phone. He was pretty frantic but I overheard him say a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Curious I tried to connect to one of the major news web sites, but they were bogged down. The other guy working in the lab was from India and knew an Indian website that channel the BBC. We got the live feed up and started watching while listening to the feed on headphones. As it progressed, a lot of the silently working students became aware and finally we turned on one of the large display screens and put up the feed for everyone to see. That was right when the second plane hit. The computer lab was designed to hold about eighty students but there were several hundred in there now, watching in silence. I remember that as I was leaving my second period class to go to art, that the principal came into the room, and whispered something to the teacher, then left. As I walked into the art room, I noticed that her tv was on too, but we always watched movies in art while we were working on projects. It looked like a movie, there was a building with smoke and flames coming out. " The next thing that I heard was the voice of our principal over the intercom,"Students and teachers, I am sorry to interupt classes, but there has been an attack on America. Early this morning, 2 planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, and 1 plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D. C. I had never heared my school go so quite. It sounded like all of a sudden all of the sound on earth was gone. Little did I know, but my prayers would soon be for someone I loved. When I got home, my mom told me that my uncle, Charles Jones, had been on flight 11, the 1st plane to hit the World Trade Centers. I was devistated, we hoped and prayed that maybe he had missed the flight. But when we checked with the flight people, they had gotten his ticket, which meant that he didn't miss the flight, and that I would never see him again. Ever since September 11th, 2001, my life has been very difficult to live. But each and everyday, I pray to God and thank him, that the rest of my family is in tacked and safe. At first I didn't believe it I thought it was a joke that was being passed around to scare the New Yorkers in my school. So continued to walk to my next class and notice nobody was in the halls I walk by a small classroom with a TV and about 40 people in it with there eyes glue to it. I walked little futher to a lounge which was also packed with people watching CNN the first thing I saw was a reporter talking about a plane hitting the World Trade Center then they showed a clip of the plane hitting it. Kids went to school, parents went to work, loved ones kissed each other good-bye but didn?t know it would be the last for some families. That same exact day around 8:46 our lives would be changed forever. Around 9:04 lives would be in danger and again around 10:10 America was changed once and for all. That day affected all of our lives but the one person everyone wants to talk to about what America should do is our President George W. Bush. He was put on the spot for what had happened to America. As a result everybody was changed forever. Our lives, hearts, nation and most of all loved ones. I know I have! America might of changed, but our flag of freedom still stands tall and proud just like all of us. America might lose battles but will win this war on Terrorism. On September 11, 2001 I was at school just like every other school aged kid. It was the beginning of third period when Mr. Kim my science teacher walked in with his eyes full of tears. We knew something was wrong and got all quiet. What Mr. Kim informed us about would stay in my mind forever "two planes slammed into the twin towers in New York." "They are on fire and tower 1 was hit at the top of the building at 436 mph. Tower 2 was hit in the middle of the building at a high rate of speed at 668 mph. The pentagon was hit by a plane going 400 mph. Pennsylvania?s pilot crashed his plane down in an open field at around 500 mph. The passengers prevented the hijackers from getting to their distention. This was the only plane that didn?t hit a building. When I arrived at home after school I was watching the news with my mom and brother. My mom was scared because her brother worked near the pentagon. Luckily her mom called her to tell her that he was okay! Every day the President starts a regular day like us. Except for the past year. George Bush keeps getting questioned on what he will do to get back at the Afghans actions on 9/11. What George Bush wants is Bin Laden found dead or alive! I think our President is doing a great job! He isn?t scared to show the Afghans that America might be scared but will always stand together. They can come back and kill some more lives, which is wrong but will never fall apart! As a result to what has happened to us we are still standing strong. Now, at the age of thirteen I know what happens when nations don?t get along. It?s not fun I?m not scared I?m terrified in some ways! Even though I?m a young teen and I?m not over in Afghanistan doesn?t mean I?m at was. America is at war and we are Americans. A lot of people?s lives have changed. Loved ones were lost. People lost mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and because of this America has changed. Airports are more concerned about security, people are more careful now. One thing I do know is that I?ve changed and I?m not scared to admit it. I?m scared for my life my family?s, friends and even strangers. We all have to be careful now. You shouldn?t be afraid to admit your scared because a lot of us are! It?s been a very quick year and September11, 2002 has come to reach us all. Families will remember their loved ones that they lost. Others will still be angry at Bin Laden. Some people might forget September 11 and move on with their lives and others will remember the terrible day of their lives. Airports might be longer to go through. Other changes have been made for the safety of the American people. Yes, some things have changed but not America she will always stand proud and tall. Tell us your story: I am a college student and my roomate and I were sleeping and we heard a knock on our door, the facilities department had come in to fix our shower, and he said, we have been bombed, someone flew a plane into the Empire state building, half asleep, my roomate and I ignored it and got up 30 minutes later....turned the tv on and sure enough, to our shocking suprise saw smoke, and then the 2nd plane hit the other tower. We couldn't believe what we were seeing, we thought we were still dreaming or something, the only thing I rememeber repeating over and over again, was "oh my gosh, this is horrible" I couldn't believe that it could happen in AMERICA! All the innocent people that lost their lives in some terrorist's, hateful act. I still pray for all the families who lost loved ones in the towers and pentagon. I have so much sympathy for all the family and friends of firemen and policemen that were killed or injured in trying to help others, you are "Gods Angels". We had dinner reservations at Windows on the World and hotel reservations at the hotel at World Trade Center. My son and daughter -in -law were meeting us in New York. We had theater tickets , a car rental to take us to the Baseball Hall of Fame,baseball tickets to the White Sox-Yankee game. I had planned this surprise for 6 months. We were already on the plane and we were not told anything about what was happening. We were just told to get off the plane --all tvs and news were shut off. Tell us your story: On September 8, 2001 I arrived home at Dulles Airport from a very sad trip to San Diego - my wedding had been scheduled for September 8 and for many reasons had just been called off. Friends were still out on the West Coast in San Diego, having traveled to participate in the ceremony. On the morning of September 11, I was at home, a new home we had just moved into, trying to decide on whether or not I should unpack some boxes. My ex-fiance had left our house around 9:00am to get some coffee for a trip he was about to take to visit with his family. He rushed through the door and told me to jump online, because he had heard on the radio that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. It was nearly impossible to get a connection at that point, web pages were showing very little text with mixed graphics and with only a dial-up connection on an already jammed server finding information wasn't easy. I wish we could have used the television - but we still hadn't had the chance to hook our cable up. Under protest for his safety, he left on his trip any way (I almost think he wasn't totally conscious of the magnitude of the events taking place), and I went to the gym where there are televisions in front of every treadmill, I ran and walked for more than 3 hours - it felt like 10 minutes and I watched the saddest story I've ever seen slowly unfold before my eyes and in front of the nation. I kept thinking that I had just flown in through Dulles a few days earlier - the same place where terrorists had flown out from. My immediate thoughts went to my friends, still on the west coast, trying to get home - where were they - were they safe - were they afraid to travel home? One of my dearest friends had just flown through Trenton, and the rest through Dulles. At that moment, I had not even considered the possibility of knowing someone in the Trade Center, which sadly as I later found out was the case. Living so close to the airport and being placed directly in the flight pattern, I have to say that the next several days were spent in an errie quietness. I almost wished for the noise of the planes - when air travel resumed I would found myself waking up short of breath wondering where the low flying plane over my house was heading. There were nightmares about those planes that stayed with me for weeks. At the time, I was working for an already struggling e-business firm, Idea Integration. As a result of market forecasts in the wake of September 11, in an already unstable economy moving towards "recession," I was laid-off the day I returned to work - two weeks severance - health care terminated at the close of business that day. I'm sure this is mentioned by a lot of people, but it all felt like a bad dream. I stopped listening to any radio stations that played music for the next couple of weeks, concentrating only on the newscasts of 9/11/01 and the fallout that was taking place around the world and specifically in our economy and in the job market. I watched countless specials on t.v., trying to keep up with things as they had happened and were happening. I flew a flag in my yard - and took it's meaning much closer to heart - as did many other Americans. And as I slowly realized that there were friends I had living in New York who had been directly affected - it became increasingly real. I was home when it happened, my narrative lacks a heoric dimesion, but I think there is value in it though, because my life was professionally and personally altered in ways that will forever be a part of who I am and what September 11 made of me. We were waiting to cross into the US in a huge line at the border. Suddenly, a disk jockey announced a plane had hit the World Trade Center. After that, it went from bad to worse and the man could hardly relate the news without choking up. There we were, citizens of two nations, sitting in shocked silence at the Mexican border. People were so kind and compassionate. After being searched and questioned, we were allowed to pass into California. It felt wonderful for my granddaughter and I to be back in our country. Even though we were going through a major tragedy,we wanted to be where we belonged and where we could help. No matter what, there is no place like America. That day last year was one where my usually sleepy, tired eyes were glued to the television set, above Mrs. Harlin's world cultures class, in awe. I thought to myself if that could happen, what's next. The next few days following September 11th I was completely paranoid. Even though the little farming community of Northwestern was hardly even a considerable target it didn't matter to me. Now a year later I am glad that our country is moving on. We have seen the effects and don't want them to happen again. So America is going to keep their eyes wide open from now on . Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The second year dental and medical students walked out of pathology lecture and heard a plane hit the world trade center. Now living in Boston I thought it was our world trade center which is a pier, and some small aircraft pilot had trouble after taking off from Logan. As my friends and I walked to our next lecture we passed a tv in the medical center and saw what had really happened. Only one friend new anyone who worked there and we all used our cell phones for her to try to get through to our family. Lecture started a little late but we didn't think anything else was happening. About ten minutes before the end of lecture, someone came to speak to our professor. He updated us and said they didn't know what was going to be happening the city might be locking down. He dismissed us saying he would let us know what via email if we would have lab our not. A group of us went to an apartment across the street and watched the day progress on tv. In between we keep trying to find out what was happening with our afternoon lab class, was it going on or not. No one in the administration knew. By the time lab came around at 1:00 we already had decided we had to continue on. Our friends in the city where safe and we had gotten a hold of our family across the country telling them we were fine. So of to lab we went. About 10 minutes after turning on the TV suddenly a NEWS break came on and I started seeing pictures of the World Trade Center on fire. I knew it was real but there was a kind of Surreal feel to what I was witnessing. I sat there in complete shock. Even though I had never been to America I still knew how significant those buildings were. I continued to watch heartbreaking scenes of everything that is good a decent just fall apart. Suddenly the first Tower collapsed and I didnt believe it at first. I remember thinking "that cant have happened". I stayed awake that entire night watching in hope that most of the people had gotten out. The next day I raced home and recorded the coverage. I still have the original Australian News coverage as a reminder of those innocent souls who werent as lucky as others. On this day it was our first road march and we marched about 7 or 8 miles. We came to the range witch we were going to; that day we were learning about being attacked and how to react to it. at about 11 a.m. is when we found out that someone had hit the world trade center in a plane and when we all had heard this no one believed it. We all thought it was a trick or a game because we had just been taught how to react to being attacked. So all day we went through the day not believing a word that our Drill Sageants were telling us. We got back to our barraks at right about dinner time and than our First Sargeat and Captian told us that both the World Trade center and the Pentagon had been hit by highjacked planes and that another plane had crashed in Pennsylvania. and after that I knew something was not right. they asked eveyone who had families that lived in New York City , Washington D.C or Pennsylvania to come with them into a room. Having a Brother who lived in New York City and who worked in the World Trade Center i reluctly went not knowing how severe the situation was. We got to watch a clip of what happened and they said they were sorry at that time 10 of us just broke down and started to cry at what we were seeing. They let us call our families I was not able to get a hold of brother I called home and got hold of my parents and talked to them and I had a million questions going through my head. and I was afraid for my life, I was afraid to go to war or the fact that my brother was killed by the actions of whoever did it at the time. I talked for a while about what was going on and the whole time I had no clue where my brother was and niether did my parents. I hung up the phone and I just let it go I was so mad I did not know what to do with all the anger that I had inside of me. So the day it happened all I saw was the New York City skyline with no World Trade Center Buildings. The two most remarkable symbols I have ever seen. I was thinking to myself how could this happen. But there is a part of me that to this day still cant believe it happened. all I saw was an empty skyling and a skyline that will be empty forever you can never bring back what happened on that day. I will forever remember the day September 11 2001 I was in Basic Training; I was serving my country. Even though the whole day I cant remember I will always remember the empty skyline I saw on T.V. For my Brother he has missed is train in the morning so he was late to work I got a hold of him 4 days later and if would have been there he would have been killed. I thank God to this day that he was not taken from us. To all the families out there who had family members in the towers I am sorry, and please remember that we can never loose hope and you will make it. None of my first or second period teachers had turned on the news, in fact they acted as if it were a normal day too, until fifth period. My teacher was late so me and my friends were waiting for the teacher to open up the room when one of them said that that World Trade Centers had been attacked and the Pentagon had been attacked too. I thought it was a joke and didn't even know what the World Trade Centers were. He kept persisting and when the teacher finally got there I asked her and she said that it was true and then turned on the TV. The first image I saw was both the buildings burning. It was shocking, I didn't know how to react. So many things were going through my head, I didn't know if my dad was alive, I didn't know if my brother was alive. Everyone in the class was stuck to the news. The bell rang and no one wanted to go because they wanted to watch the news. When I got home my dad and my brother were waiting there. We sat down and watched the news all day and into most of the night just trying to figure out how this could happen and who did it. I remember throughout the entire school day just staring out the windows watching for any planes in the sky just in case they decided to attack the school. I had a horrible paranoia feeling. The attacks changed everything, since my dad is retired military he was very concerned about strangers calling the house and for a couple of days he didnt have to go to work since he worked at Fort Belvoir and he just sat there and watched the news. For a couple of days all we could do was watch, it was a terrible idle feeling. Later my dad said that every generation has that event where everyone remembers exactly where they were when that happened. For him it was 9/11 and the assasination of JFK. For my grandparents it was Pearl Harbor and the assasination of JFK. 9/11 was a terrifying experience but I think we shouldn't let this fear blind us, we should learn from it and know how to react next time. This was a horrible experience but it was a learning experience for me and every other american. Then my principal walked in and gave us the shocking news. The World Trade Center was gone. The day before, my father had left for Idaho on business. My first reaction was that he may have been on one of the planes, but fortunately, as I found out later that day, he was not. My next reaction was one of disbelief. The two tallest buildings on Manhattan Island, and in the United States, gone. Thousands of workers and travelers, gone. What I remember most from September 11th were the shocked, scared, and occasionally enraged reactions of my fellow students. Also, the reaction of my sister, friends I communicated with via e-mail, and others. I remember the moment of silence that followed the announcement of the World Trade Center attack. I was facilitating a meeting for a massive project for AG as the project manager. All of sudden I heard a radio loud from the conference room. We opened the door to see what was going and that's when we stepped out to learn that America was under attack... Everyone basically just stood listening to the radio in shock. Work ceased as we began to talk amongst ourselves. Management could plainly see that not much work would get done that day. We received a corporate email that stated we were being released to go home due to the uncertainty and our vunerability being in one of the tallest buildings near downtown Houston. That was it I was out of there and on my way home to my family. We basically just sat around the rest of the day glued to the TV for more details, calling family and friends and crying for the families of the victims. At one part of the day, I was so moved that I stood in my bedroom and sang God Bless America with every fiber of my being and began to pray for our country. That night at church, after prayer, God placed that same song on my heart to share with the congegation. God Bless America! Tell us your story: My son ran into my bedroom saying "Mom, Mom, there's terrible accident news on TV" as he scrambled for the remote to turn on my TV. Flashing before us, upon awakening that fateful day we sat together watching all the stations broadcast the horrifying depiction of that plane hitting the first tower and then suddenly a 2nd plane hit the other tower. And then the towers crumbled to Ground Zero.....meanwhile another tragic crash, the pentagon. It was apparent someone was attacking our country. We were rooted to our spot in front of the television, finding it difficult to move ourselves to get ready for school and work. That day I drove my son to the stop where he waits for his high school school bus. I got out of the car and actually hugged him as we parted, and he was not at all embarrassed. In fact, he hugged me back, hard and we promised to see one another later that day. Once at work we were not very productive, instead shuffling in disbelief, radios and television monitors turned on throughout the building, usually with a cluster of employees standing, teary eyed, consoling one another as we pulled together in grief, and in consolation. This was a tragic act against our country, yet the terrorists completely underestimated the power their pre-meditated aggression tolled upon us to instead instantly produce a stronger, unifide nation. My son and I lucky in a sense. We did not lose any family members or close friends in any of these catastrophic events 9-11-02, yet we mourn with our nation our brothers and sisters whose innocent lives were taken from their families and loved ones and AMERICA!
