Tell us your story: As I got into my car and proceeded to leave my boyfriend's apartment on the morning of September 11, 2001, all I heard on the radio in my car was that there was an attack against the World Trade Center and that 1 tower had collasped. I was speechless to hear that many were trapped inside and they were expecting many deaths. As I continued to my Mom's house, things just got worse. As one event would happen, all I could think of was, "What wil happen next!" By the time that I got to my destination I was horrified and sadened to think that someone was behind this and was causing our nation such grief. By the end of that day and still a year later I feel for all the families that lost loved ones and friends to this traggic event in history. I honestly don't think that it was God that planned this. However, the terrorists behind this event wanted to bring this nation to its knees. We were brought to our knees but not in the way that they wanted. We are now on our knees in prayer united together and a year later we are still surviving and fighting for our freedom. May God bless this nation for years to come and help us to survive this terrible event that made history on September 11, 2001. I didn't really prpare myself to fly again but next week on July 4th weeknd my whole family is flying to Houston, TX for a family reunion. To add to my anxiety thre was a terrorist threat for TX the same weekend we will be there. We will not allow the threat to keep us from our family. As scared as I am to fly ( and I am 35 years old) I will place it in Gods hands and hope for the best. September 11, 2001 I was trying to get my son off to school. At the time he was 11 years old now 13 years old. My mom had stayed over that night because at the time she commutes for her job. I just got out of the shower nd se said someone had just a plane in the World Trade Center. I didn't have the sound of the TV turned up. It looked like a Bruce Willis movie. I turned up the sound and I heard alot of screaming . I sat there and watched as the 2nd plane hit the sout Tower. I stared to cry. No I don't know anyone from there but it was so hard to compute all of tis. Then I saw people jumping..jumping from the top. I felt so sick inside. I took my son to school were I assured him he would be safe. He was also nervous about going to his after school program. I told him he will be safe and can call me at anytime. When I got to work I had a personal TV with me and I watched the Pentagon in flames then after that a plane goes down in PA. I called my mom and said is Frankie ( our cousin) ok ? He sometimes is at the Pentagon for business. She just had called his brother and there was no word if my cousin ws dead or alive. That was more than I could take. I dropped to my knees and cried. Oh Lord I cried. I left work and went to pick up my son. Finally after 5 hours we were notified he is alive and in a bunker. I cried all over again because I was relieved but also I felt guilty. Other loved ones never had a chance. But I thank God for him sparing my cousin. I have the TV turned off so my son would't see this over nd over again. Next day I was scared to send my son to school. But I did anyway. I went to work. At 3:00 pm I got call from his after school program that I needed to come pick my son up because they just had a bomb theat called in. I couldn't talk after I was told that. I handed the phone to my manager and went and asked a friend if he can drive me over to get my son. He said yes. I got in the truck and I literally lost it. I couldn't stop crying. Damn them to hell calling a after school program and threatening them with a bomb. I went to were they were holding kids and I jut grabbed him and held him for a long time. Then we went home. We did what we could for donations. My son even put his own $12 in for he 911 relief fund. He said they need it more than I do. My sons innocence was taken away a long time ago from a personal family situation but anything he had left was gone on 9/11. So before I leave on the 3rd from AZ I willbe sending out emails to my loved ones. I am going to handwrite the one to my son. I am calling them the just in case something happens emails. I had read alot of painful stories from 9/11 and the ones who never got a chnace to say good bye to their loved one. Tell us your story: I was on the phone ordering materials for a job we were doing when the salesman told me that the Trade Center had been attacked. He had the radio on at his desk and had heard the news. We instantly stoppped with the order as I turned on the television to find the news. Of course that was not hard to do. The salesman and I said our goodbyes and we each turned our attention to the moment. My father and I manage Viet-Vet, a contracting business in Maryland. My father is a decorated Nam vet who takes his Country seriously. As I told him what was going on we both just stopped to watch the news. We watched as the second plane slammed into the Tower, and as we watched I could feel the anger grow inside myself. I felt an overwelming urge to just run. There was anger an abundance of it, but there was also a huge sense of loss, a sense of emptiness. I can't even describe all the mixed emotions raging inside. After watching for what seemed an eternity I felt that I needed to go to work to busy myself if nothing else. As I drove to the jobsite, The Pentagon was attacked. I had to ask God when he was going to stop the madness that was going on all around me that day. As I worked that day, I kept the radio on listenning to the kaos and hoping it was an Orsen Wells tale, but knowing that it had been too real. For days my family and I stayyed glued to the TV, watching, elated at the survivors rescue devasted as the number of dead and missing kept rising. A few weeks after 9-11-01 a local motorcycle dealer organized a fund raiser for the victims families. The paticipants met at the store, roughly 7,000 people to ride our bikes around the Baltimore Beltway in a parade displaying flags of all sizes. People lined the streets to greet the riders to thank us for supporting our heroes. We didn't deserve thanks. It is every Americans responsibility to support your troops, local public services and your elected officials. Let's not loose sight of why we do what we do. Because at the time we believe it to be right. Follow your beliefs, your heart and never forget what has happened to "Our Great Nation". Babies were crying, doctors were visiting, and we were trying to get the little ones ready to go home. Someone came in and said that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. "Oh brother," I thought. Some pilot of a small plane got confused or something. Too bad. I figured that the pilot had died, and I hope no one else was hurt too badly. Back to work! Then, I heard that ANOTHER plane had crashed into the other tower. Wait! Something horrible was going on. However, I still had work to do. Then there was more. Then there came an announcement that the world Trade Center in New York city had been struck by a plane. All the sudden there was talk about war. But then came the announcement that stated that teachers should turn off their Televisions and continue lessons. This outraged me because this was certainly history in the making and I was missing it for review of stuff I?ve known for years. It was startling; I guess, when it happened. Anything that get teachers to turn on their Televisions happens seldom or not at all. It was not untill I returned home that I got the full story: that a second plane went into the trade center, and the Pentagon had been hit too, all while I was rotting on my seat while this was really happening. That day he was working as a carpenter, at 120 Broadway on the 20th fl, 1 block away from WTC. I dropped him off in front of the World Trade Center at 6am, returned home, got ready for work, took the kids to school and went to work. At the time of the 1st tower being struck, I was on a conference call when someone mentioned what had happened. My office mate (who's wife) worked at Tower 1 and I stared at each other, turned on the radio and immediately tried to call our spouses. As with everyone else, the cell phones were down and we could not reach them. We each consoled each other, knowing in our hearts that our phones would soon ring and it would be our spouses. Around 9:30am, my husband called, frantic, upset, and out of breath. He had been running for almost an hour. After hearing the impact on the 1st tower, he went to the window where he had a direct look at what had happened and thought it had been an accident. Soon after he saw a 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower and knew we were under attack, quickly left the building and started running north as quickly as possible, constantly trying to call me. I was so happy and relieved that he was safe. He was at a bus stop and was going to wait for the bus to take him home. I called my kids school and asked them to relay the message that their father was safe. My office mate on the other hand, still had not received any calls from his wife and was losing hope. Sticking together we prayed and hoped for his phone to ring. As the radio said the 1st tower was collapsing, then the 2nd tower was collapsing, we were so hoping that phone would ring. It finally rang, she was safe and at the White Plains train station. After the plane hit the 1st tower, she immediately evacuated from the 2nd tower, jumped on the subway to Grand Central Station to take Metro North home. What a relief our spouses were both safe!! My office mate left work and went to pick up his wife as I waited to hear from my husband again as to whether he was on a bus heading home. He was at the bus stop alright, but the bus never came as the city had been shutdown and public transportation was at a stand still. He decided to start walking and met up with someone who lives a few blocks from our home, who too was wondering how to get home. Finally, their guardian angel appeared, a delivery van, with an advertisement from Queens. They approached the driver and asked him to take them home to Yonkers. After a bit of hesitation, the man agreed. I left the office to head home and to school to pick up my kids. Not realizing the buses were not running, I got home a bit alarmed that he was not yet home. I tried calling his phone and he told me he was in Yonkers, with a new friend' and was on his way home. I waited in the driveway and gave him the biggest hug imaginable and so happy that he had escaped safely. I emerged from Penn Station onto 7th Avenue roughly around 8:35am and I began my walk to the office which is on 5th Avenue and 17th street. As I passed beneath the scaffolds on the corner of 7th Avenue and 31st, I heard the unusually loud roar of an airplane and stopped to look up. Unable to see anything, I quickly paid it no mind and proceeded on my walk. When I finally crossed over to 5th Avenue, I noticed people on the east side of the street looking up and pointing downtown. I quickly ran across the street and to my horror, noticed the North Tower with a smoking gaping hole in it. Not having put two and two together, I quickly called home to find out what the news was reporting and then realized it was the plane I heard just a few minutes earlier. On the corner of 17th and 5th, I was joined by a co-worker as we stared in utter disbelief. Then we shouted in horror as a ball of fire exploded in the South Tower. Of course, from our perspective we hadn't seen the second jet ramming itself into Tower Two and at first we thought it was a bomb, but it didn't make sense. Soon enough, people on the street connected to cell phones were shouting that we were being attacked. I left my co-worker and quickly ran into the deli to buy a disposable camera. I ran back out and started to shoot whatever I could with this dinky little camera. After about 20 minutes of watching both Towers on fire, I was hungry for information so I ran into my office to hear the radio and joined many of my associates as we all tried to figure out was was going on. It was then that we heard a large uniform scream coming from the people outside on the street below. I stuck my head out the window and realized that Tower Two had disappeared. Who would ever think that it would completely collapse? We all ran back out to the street again and in moments we would witness the collapse of the North Tower. Still, I continued to take pictures as I captured the collapse in 4 frames...not bad for a disposable. The range of emotions in the street was incredible...people crying, screaming, nervous laughter, silent disbelief, cursing whomever did this to us. It must have been the surreal shock of what I witnessed, but the whole time I didn't even think about the people inside the Towers or the people on the planes. Maybe I assumed everyone got out, or I was just looking at these two giant structures ripped from our skyline as void of life within. The Long Island RR ride home was packed but silent as we could see the smoke rising from the ruins of downtown as our train headed east. The true shock and guilt set in when I finally got home to discover that one of my best friends, John Katsimatides, was on the 104th floor of the North Tower. Here I was taking pictures, and my friend was dying a horrific death.... and he just disappeared with hundreds of others, yet to be identified, and maybe never. Everyday I take that walk to my office. Everyday I re-live that morning. Everyday I think of my friend, John Katsimatides, and as long as I live, not a day will go by that I won't think of him and how he was taken from us. I turned on Q104.3 the New York classic rock station. At 8:45 they started saying that there was an explostion on top of one of the World Trade Center buildings. It didn't phase me a bit. I thought it was just a regular office fire or something like that. Then they just played music like nothing had happened. At 9:05 I got into the courtroom and no one knew what had happened. All of a sudden, a police officer rushes into the room and runs to the judge and whispers something into his ear. The judge tells everyone that there will be a 15 minute recess. I went outside to have a cigarette and my friend Ryan had called my cell phone. "A plane just crashed into the WTC." he says. I couldnt believe it but I told him that I could not talk because I had to go inside. Literaly 45 seconds later, Ryan calls back saying that we have no more World Trade Center. I was in total shock. All I could think of was my brother who lives in Manhattan. I tried calling him but Ryan's phonecall was the last one I made that morning. I went inside the courtroom and the judge had told us all to go home and everyone will have an extended court date. On my drive back I turned on the radio and everyone was so quiet. I came home and had 4 voicemails on my cell phone. Everyone that I went to school with in Albany was asking me if I was ok. I couldn't even call them back to tell them I was fine. I got in contact with my brother and he was ok. My parents were in France at the time so I could not get in touch with them. I watched tv for a little while but I couldnt find any regular programming. Every station had the same picture on it. The towers on fire. It was awful. I just wanted to go and help out in some way but I couldn't. I spent the night by the beach. I had to get away from everything. It was so relaxing during a time so stressful. I knew the second that I got that phonecall from Ryan that everything was going to change. Nothing was the same since. See, I was in an abusive relationship and had not seen my children or family for 4 years. I was afraid to leave for my life. BUT, watching the courage presented by people that day made me realize that I could and would find the strentgth to leave. I did. I moved to Georgia, carrying only a box of clothes and a one-way bus ticket. I started my life all over and I made it! That day so empowered me! I turned to FOX, and saw it was only five thirty. So I fell asleep again but with the TV on, then all of a sudden,There was breaking news, a plane just crashed into one of the twin towers. Unfortunatly I had to go to school, but I wanted to stay home and watch. When I got to first period, we didn't do anything school related, all we did was watch in awe the tradety that just occured. At first I though the plane ran out of gas, or a technical problem occured. Then I was told that Alqaida had just performed a terrorist attack twords the U.S. There is where we all realized we were under attack for the firt time, in our own land. After we just watched the next attacks that were launced launched knowing we couldn't do anything or at least help the people knowing we could'nt do anything being at the other side of the country. We have televisions all around the store to show advertisements and such. The crash was all over every t.v. that we have. I think that every person in the store stopped and all went silent. No one could beleive what has happened. Some people started crying for their loved ones at home and some for their loved ones who they knew were going to have to go and fight in this war. A lot of customers were buying everything that you would buy for a bad storm, others were saying that they were going to withdraw all of their money from the bank. I had a customer ask me if me and my family needed anything or any money. I have never seen such kindness along with so much hurt in my life. When I left work, I thanked God for my life and all that I still had. I called my mother first thing and told her that I loved her so much. I called my boyfriend and told him the same thing. I did not know anyone who was lost in this tragedy, but it still hurt me the same. I know that I will never take my life for granted and I thank God every night for all that I have. I know that no one in this country has been untouched by this, and no one's life will ever be the same. I now have a two month old daughter, and I look at her today and I know how blessed I am. My heart and prayers go out to every one in this country, every one who risked their lives to save someone else, and to all those who lost someone on that tradject day. God has a special place in heaven for them all, and just remember that you will be with them some day. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers. September eleventh was the day my aunt's sister was to leave back to Syria from her summer long vacation to the states. I went to Fountain Valley high school early that day, still adjusting to the early schedule with a constant queasiness in my stomach since it had been the first time I had ever been to public school in my whole life. After my first period class, all my friends came rushing to me, asking me the same question over and over. "Did you hear what happened in New York?" I shook my head no, not knowing what anyone was talking about. As I set one step into my second period class, the teacher began to talk. "Class," she said, "We'll be going to go next door to watch the news this period and remember this just happened don't start pointing fingers just yet." I went next door and sat on the floor, feeling the butterflies in my stomach worse this time, wondering why people were giving me cold looks and proclaiming that "World War 3" is coming. As the teacher turned it to channel nine I saw for the first time what the commotion was about. Someone had struck the World Trade Center with two hijacked airplanes. The anchorwoman announced it was most likely the work of a devious man named Osama bin Laden. Osama bin Laden? I dug deep into the recesses of my memory, when quickly I remembered how a man named Osama bin Laden, and Arab of some sort, helped America in a war. But no, why would anyone want to go against America? The fact that it was a sovereign power should be enough to stop the thought of such an idea. As a gazed at the television my teacher came close to me and whispered," If anyone gives you static about the whole thing, don't be afraid to come and tell me. I know you had nothing to do with this, but some people don't." Hopefully reader, you have noticed by now that I am Muslim. I am a Muslim girl who wears the hijaab. Unfortunately, by wearing the hijaab, I have been labeled on that day as a terrorist, as an oppressed female, and a freak. Dear reader, I am here to tell you that I am not a freak, I am a human being with a different view and way on life. But that day in September ruined the rest of my school year, and just maybe, my life. From then on I was constantly ostracized, be it because I wear long sleeves and hijaab or because my eyes were wider than normal people and suddenly, any ignorant body thought they were better than me and had the right to act like it too. I hated my life that year. Somehow, it reminded me of the way African Americans, the Japanese, and the Germans were all treated at a time in life. I gave a big sigh hoping that somehow all this would end, but somehow knowing this problem had just begun. Tell us your story: When the PA system came on the first time, it was just the principal saying that there was something on tv that we should be watching. It was kind of an ambiguous message, so we didn't turn it on. The school's military recruitment officers were giving our class a talk that day as well, so when the teacher across the hall finally came over to tell us we needed to turn the tv on, the officers were in shock. I remember one of the two saying "We may have to go right away." I cried at the impact of the whole thing, but I don't think anyone else in the room did at the time. As the day went on and things got worse, I learned that I wouldn't have to go to work that day because all of Walt Disney World had closed for only the second time in its existence. When I went home, I remember flipping the channels to find something else to watch. The news was on every channel, almost. I think I ended up watching Three's Company because I couldn't stand to watch the World Trade Center collapse over and over. I good friend's father was struggling through the last days of his battle with cancer. As I got my first cup of coffee and set up my desk to start work, a co-worker turned and said, "A plane flew into the World Trade Center". I have to admit, I visualized a small business plane, a Cessna, or something like that, and I just muttered, "I have people I know who I have to think about right now". Shortly, only a few minutes later, she turned to me again and said, "They think it was a 737 or something like that". I looked up startled! I apologized for my comment before and turned my radio on. Shortly after that our office manager arrived to work and brought the tv out into the work area. We all sat stunned while the events, now so well known, unfolded before our eyes. The phones were quiet that day. A lot of offices closed, some never opened. We stayed all day, glued to the events; we wondered in horror what the next terrible thing would be. In some ways, we were in a state of total and complete shock and in a state of disbelief. The reality of the events were too much to take in all at once. I watched the replay of events over and over that night. Inspite if the horror, I could not drag myself away. My tears would not stop. I am an accountant for the Centers and just settled in my office and turned on my computer. At 8:45 the wife of a coworker called to saw that the news was reporting a plane flew into one of the Twin Towers. All of us found that odd. At the center they turned on the TV in the teachers' lounge. I was in the lounge watching the broadcast when we saw the second plane fly into the other Tower. In the Center we take care of children six weeks old through school age. It was a comfort being in a building with so many children. We immediately thought to see if any of their parents workd at the Towers. We were blessed that all of the parents who did escaped. The rest of the day is a blur to me. I kept the radio tuned to 95.5FM, WPLJ, as they reported all day. I screamed when they said the one tower collapsed. Then, hearing about the Pentagon, it was absolutely terrifying. All around that time came the report of people jumping from the other Tower, then its collapse, and the fourth plane crashing in PA. Time seemed to have stopped; it didn't matter. It was my mom telling me to turn on my television because a plane had just hit one of the twin towers. I hit the power button on the remote just in time to see something that is forever etched into my memory, the second plane hitting the other tower. As so many others in the country, I sat glued to the television for hours, holding my then 7 month old son. I cried for those who lost their lives and those who were going to go home that night missing a loved one. Over the last year, many things have changed. As I walked down the hall of my college, I saw a bunch of people standing around a tv. They all looked like they saw a ghost. I went up to one of the professors and asked what had happened, she turned to me and said a plane has just hit the world trade center. I asked her if she knew what company the plane belonged to because my aunt works for American Airlines. My heart just dropped because I knew she was flying that day. I called everyone in my family to ask if they had heard anything and they didn't. Then when I turned around and looked at the tv the second plane had crashed into the second building. I just started to cry even harder. I fell to my knees. Every one around me was holding one another. This was the first time I had ever seen all of the races at my school getting along. I went to class late and there was only a few people there. After about 10 minutes of class someone ran in and said that they were going to close down the school because they feared that the school may be in danger. At this point I did not know about the pentagon and the plane that had crashed in the field. I had got into my car and turned on the radio to try and piece all of the parts that I had missed. They broke in and said that all major businesses downtown Chicago were closing down for the day because they thought we were next. Then I kept thinking if my fiances father was ok because he worked near the Sears tower. The fear just grew more in me. When I got home I turned the tv on and found out about the attack on the pentagon and the plane that had crashed in the field. I just started to cry again. I remember that I was crying so hard that I couldn't hardly breath. I went to my fiances house and just watched in terror. I couldn't help but think about if my aunt was ok. He just held me as I cried. We tried calling his father but there was no answer so we had no clue where he was. I couldn't believe the sight of people jumping to there death and people burning to death. Those deadly images still run through my mind to this day. I just can't imagine who could do such a thing in pleasure. I worried all night until finally my aunt called and said that after the first crash, her plane was grounded and she was ok. I thank god everyday that she is ok. Practically all of my family works for American Airlines and I don't think I could have been able to handle seeing my aunts death. That night I went outside and created a little candle light vigual in loving memory of all that had died. I remember just sitting there watching everything happening and feeling so helpless. I wish I could have gone there and helped. Instead I gave blood and donations to try and help but to this day I feel as if it was not enough. I will never forget all of our heros that died. I am greatful to have people who will risk their lives for those who are around them. It just touches me because seemed to be so rude and ugly to one another and then something terrible has to happen for all of us americans to come together. I would like to be able to depend on others to help. I think all Americans have learned from this experience and it will help us all to become better people for our future children.
