It was between 9:45-9:55 so all of the terrorists had already hit their target. He gave the news vaguely, as I remember being under the initial influence that the attacks had somehow been orchestrated as a transatlantic flight that hadn't been intercepted on its 5000mi trip from Portugal or something like that. Then I remember the dissapointment I felt when I heard that the figters sent to intercept were sent from bases hundreds of miles away from the target. The day questioned me, challenged me... Is america supposed to make mistakes like that? How did the air traffic controllers miss the plane's trajectory? Isn't the Urban area of New York City a no fly zone? What about the Pentagon? in any case... the day began like any other ... and ended in the rift of eternity... ...and eternity cried for those who lost their lives... I called my doctor's office around 9 AM to make an appointment and heard the women in the office talking about somebody's son who worked "there" and they were wondering about how he was. At this point, of course, I had no idea what was going on and decided to turn on the television, just in time to see the second plane hit. From that point on I could not turn it off. I called my sister to let her know what was going on. I tried to call my mother, who is a civilian employee for the Navy downtown, but was unable to reach her. I could only pray for her as I watched the proceedings on the television. I saw the first tower start to sway and then collapse and could only wonder why I saw this on the screen, but the news anchors were not talking about it until after it happened. At this time I started to pray for everyone. Needless to say, I accomplished very little work after that point. While I lost no one that day, sitting here and writing about this still makes me cry. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I took my daughter to the Oral Surgeon that morning to have her Wisdom Tooth removed. She was in with the dentist and I was in the waiting room. There was one other woman sitting in the waiting area. We were sitting very quiet, each reading a magazine. The radio was on. When they said a plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York, we both looked up at each other and started saying how awful that was, and the poor people in the building and in the planes. Of course, like the rest of the world, we thought it was an accident, then one of the dental assistant's yelled that another plane went into the other building. We all got very scared at that point because obviously, like everyone else we had figured we were under attack. I don't think I have every been that scared in my life. At this point the dentist came out and told me my daughter was in the recovery room. Everyone that worked there was trying to concentrate on their work, but when news came that the Pentagon had been hit, everyone went a little crazy. They were running back and forth talking to the dentists, talking to the patients, the phones started ringing. During all this, my daughter was laying in the recovery room not quite knowing what was going on. I remember pacing back and forth from the hall to the recovery room saying "Oh my God, we are under attack." I must have said it 20 times. I just wanted to take my daughter and go home. The nurse finally came in and told us she could go. We drove home to Malden, a city just north of Boston, and immediately turned on the television. At that point, they were replaying the planes going into the tower, my sister called me and said they had both collapsed, I said "No they didn't, I'm looking at them right now on television," she then said wait and they will show it, when they did, I was in shock like everyone else and I just started crying and praying for all the people and their families. I remember thinking that there were people out there watching this and their loved one(s) was on one of those planes or in one of those buildings. I can't begin to imagine what they went through. I wanted to stay home an watch more, but I had to go to work. When I got there everyone was gathered around the radio listening. Needless to say, nothing got done that day. We were shocked to learn that two of the planes had come from Logan. I remember someone saying, I wonder if we know anyone on those planes. It turned out some co-workers did know some people. One co-workers neighbor got a phone call later that day from her neice, she was screaming, "I have no parents, I have no parents". Both of her parents were on one of the planes. We found another co-worker outside crying the next day, one of her good friends was on one of the planes. I remember my mother talking about Pearl Harbor and I thought how scary that day must have been for everyone. I guess we all know what it was like back then. None of us will ever forget that horrible act the cowards committed that day. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone that was directly impacted by this. I have read some of the stories of people that were in the area or in the buildings and I can't get them out of my mind. New Yorkers are strong people to be able to carry on so soon after this tragedy. That exact same day, my brother and I did not go to school because we were both ill. I think we were the firts students to witness the towers fall and know that New York was being attacked. We were both in the living room changing channels when we suddently saw and heard how the Towers were coming down like an avalanche. It was 2nd period. I was excused to go to the restroom. On my way down the hallway, I heard most of the classroom television on and wondered why everyone was watching the news. When I arrived back into the room, our TV was on also and I saw that one of the buildings of the WTC had been hit by a commercial airplane. At that point, I didn?t really understand what it meant or how it happened. I thought it was just an accident. Then, I saw the 2nd plane hit the other building. By that time, I figured it wasn?t an accident. But I still didn?t understand what happened or the impact of the crashes. Soon after the 2nd plane crash, I went to my 3rd period class and heard that a plane had crashed in Pennsylvania. Everyone around school didn?t really take it too seriously because it wasn?t really clear that it was a terrorist attack. But by the end of the day, our teachers had informed us that it was in fact a terrorist attack. When I got home, I saw that the Pentagon was hit also. I then, began to worry about my aunt who is the Secretary of the District of Columbia. After hearing that the Capitol Building was evacuated, I called my sister and she told me that our aunt had gotten home safely. I later found out that my cousin?s wife worked at one of the WTC buildings but happened to head to work late that morning and was told to go back home. I wouldn?t say that September 11, has changed my life but it has certainly changed my attitude on things. It?s made me realize how good life is and the things that I should be doing while I have it. It has also made me realize that we?re possibly closer to the last days than I thought. Due to my beliefs in God and the Bible, I can?t help but wonder how many more tragedies like September 11 will happen in the future. The way things are going in the Mid-East and all the bad things that continue to happen makes me worry what tomorrow could bring. I think the patriotism that was shown right after September 11 should most be remembered. It?s the most I?ve seen in my life. I didn?t really hang an American Flag that I own. The patients were watching the TV's as they were waiting to complete their procedures. When suddenly, someone yelled for us to look at the screen. What we saw was one of the WTC towers on fire. All of us thought that it had been an accident, but as time went on, we knew that wasn't the case. My daughter attends the Fashion Institute of Technology on 27th St in Manhattan. I was hoping and praying that she was safely asleep in her dorm room that morning. I called my husband at work. He was listening to the days' events on the radio. We, and our other children, and immediate family, tried frantically to call our daughter, but we couldn't get through to Manhattan. One of the patients' had a son at the time who was also attending college in Manhattan. She didn't have anyway she could contact her son. She and I sat together, and prayed for our children. I couldn't concentrate on my work anymore, and just broke down. Finally, around 11:00 a.m., my daughter called from Manhattan. She said she had slept through the attacks (she was app. 3 miles from the WTC). My mother-in-law finally had gotten through to her and told her what was happening around her. She said when she opened her window, all she could hear was people screaming, continous sirens, and the fighter jets flying over the city. She and her friends tried to walk down to Ground Zero, but access was blocked off. She kept in communication with us as much as possible. She knew she couldn't come home as trains were stopped, and I knew I couldn't drive in to get her as traffic into and out of Manhattan was shut down. She finally was able to come home on the train the next day. Her school had bomb threats and evacuations in the 48 hours following the attack. She got off the train, and came over to me, and hugged me tightly and just cried. She said she was so scared. Grand Central Station was empty except for soldiers carrying machine guns. The station was surrounded by police and army vehicles. She had walked off the train with some firefighters from Bridgeport who had just been to the WTC sight. She had listened to their stories of the horrific sights and tasks they had just experienced. She was glad to be home, but she continued to be very worried about her friends that could not get home,and continued to try to stay in contact with them until I drove her back to school that Sunday night. She just kept asking why did this have to happen now, her dream of going to F.I.T. was finally coming true,why? I was a junior at the University of Pittsburgh. It was about 10:30am and I was entering Hillman Library after my first class of the day ended. As I was walking in, hoards of other students were leaving. Library employees were telling us that the library was closing and that we all needed to go back home. The university was closed. On my walk back to my apartment my anxiety grew. What had happened? No one that I talked to seemed to know. I walked past many cars and trucks with their radio volumes high. It seemed there was an airplane crash somewhere, but where? When I finally reached my apartment all of my roommates were watching CNN. I was quizical, but they filled me in. I sat down to absorb what they were telling me. How could someone bomb the trade towers with an airplane? As my brain was trying to comprehend, the second tower went down. It was ugly. I didn't like watching, nor could I come to reality. Everything I saw on TV looked like a slick Hollywood movie with great effects, except these effects looked much more believable. One of the hijacked planes went down in Somerset County, about 80 miles east of my location. Parents and friends tried calling my apartment to check up on us. It was almost impossible to get through. Much of the city of Pittsburgh was closed. If you were in you were staying in. And those who were out we didn't want to come in. Rumors were flying, people were checking parked cars for bombs, the streets were quiet. No one felt comfortable. My roommates are from the D.C. area. My friend who has a sister who worked in the 7th building of the Trade Center. She has a different job now. Other than paranoia, these were the people that I knew that were physically close to the action. It's too bad that a whole nation had to be emotionally close to such an atrocity. A year later I still get tears in my eyes when I hear the interviews on TV. It's heartwrenching to see how many children have matured, all because they lost a parent. I hate it, I change the channel because I get so sick of it. I'm ready to move on, but I know I won't forget. Tell us your story: My husband and I and our 5 and 6 year old were on a US Air flight out of Logan Airport headed to Orlando for a family vacation. Upon arriving at Orlando the pilot of our plane came to the front and announced that there had been a major tradgedy and to please depart the plane as quickly as possible and get to where you are going as quickly as possible. With this, my husband and I and the rest of the people aboard looked in horror at each other wondering what had happened. So on Tuesday, the 11th, I was sleeping in. I woke up to the sound of the phone ringing. When I answered, I remember looking at the clock and noting that it was 9:00am central time. I picked up the phone and it was a representative from the Army trying to get me to join. After I politely declined, I decided to turn on the TV to watch Regis and Kelly. What I saw instead when I turned on that TV was the terrifying imnages of the terrorist attacks. I had no clue what was going on until I read the captions under the pictures. They said that it was an attack on NY and DC. I immediatly picked up the phone to call my mom who was at work in St. Louis. The phone never rang on either end. She was on the line as I picked it up. She was trying to call me exactly when I called her. We talked about what had happened before hanging up. I settled in front of the TV in the living room to watch the coverage. I saw the people waving from the remaining tower (the first tower had already collapsed). I remember praying that they'd make it out as I went to get a drink of water. By the time I came back to the TV, the second tower had collapsed. The reporter then mentioned that there were as many as 11 planes still up in the air and unaccounted for. I was terrified as I lived very close to a large city. I was scared that St. Louis would be next. My mom came home soon there after and we watched more of the coverage. Finally, needing to get out for awhile, I went for a drive. As I drove down a busy street, I noticed that someone had parked their truck on the side of the road and had a large American Flag hanging out the back. That's when it first struck me that this day would be one that I would never forget. I haven't forgotten it. I pray for the victims and the country all the time. I have a flag hanging on the wall of my room. I wear shirts with American Flag's on it at least once a week. I am so proud and so thankful to be an American. God Bless this wonderful country. My Dad was born and raised in Manhattan (in NYC) and has what is in my opinion, a typical New Yorker attitude. He always goes right to blaming someone or something and it is by habit, that I always disagree with him. So it was that I disagreed with him this morning and said that "how do you know it isn't simply an accident?" I don't remember where I was when I heard the second plane hit but by then, it was obvious that I was wrong. I sat and watched the TVs for a bit before deciding to go downstairs to Starbucks and get my coffee. On my way to the elevator, the plane hit the Pentagon. I work for a Federal agency--located about 1 1/2 miles from the Pentagon so then I began to worry that "they" could target any Government agency. However, I still went for coffee as the entire thing held a surreal quality for me and I for some crazy reason assumed that they would simply put the fires out and rescue people from the top of the WTC's with helicopters. The velocity of the entire situation had not sunk in yet. Once back in the office, we realized we could see the smoke pouring out of the Pentagon from our corner office window. My office is on the top, 12th floor. We went back to watching TV and, still believing that the fire would be extinguished and folks rescured, I left the room with the TV. A short time later, I heard people yelling "Oh my God, it fell down," and racing back in to the room in time to see the dust cloud engulf lower Manhattan and the tower gone. Thinking about the event today, a year later, still gives me an empty, depressed feeling and makes me want to cry. I feel very connected to New York, having spent every Christmas there at my grandparents on East 25th Street, and many trips in the summer, and visiting my cousins who live on Staten Island near the ferry. I've been up in the towers about 4 times over the years. The last was 4 years ago when I took my then 7 year old son up in them for the view. I was just looking through my momento box where I keep ticket stubs and various items and found my ticket for the WTC observation deck. I did not even know I had it until the other day when I saw it there. Even though I live in closer proximity to the Pentagon than the WTC's, I feel more connected and more heavy hearted when I think of the WTC's. I guess because of the enormity and the realization that these buildings that have stood there most of my life, that I've visited, are actually gone. That people had to make the unthinkable decision to burn alive or jump 110 stories, when I'm afraid of heights and I'm sure many of them were too. The fact that the buildings pulverized the bodies and there was almost nothing to find. The Pentagon was a trajedy as well, of course. I had been in NYC for three summers at Columbia U. On July 11, 2001, I finally got to go to the Twin Towers. I was so impressed by the friendly people who helped us find our way around. Tell us your story: My brother called from work on September 11, 2001, to tell me to turn on the news, that a plane had hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center. I was scheduled to work later that day and was watching my nephew, Harrison, who was just 2 years old at the time. My mom was home with me, too. It was as beautiful a day here in Pittsburgh as it was in New York, and I kept thinking how shocking it was. What was wrong with the plane? How could it crash into a building? Why not the river or ocean where it would still be tragic, but the loss of life would be so much less? As we were watching, we saw the second plane hit the towers. We sat for minutes in shocking disbelief before we realized it had to be an attack. The news was sketchy. Lots of information was coming in from a variety of sources. We saw people looking in awe at what had happened. We saw a man sitting underneath the towers and actually record the second plane hitting. We saw people falling from the buildings to the ground below. We saw rescuers. We saw countrymen. We saw patriots. We saw heroes - right there in New York, in our own country. We watched incredible footage, incredible history unfold before us. It was not like watching man step on the moon, it wasn't like watching Viet Nam or the Gulf War. It wasn't like Somalia. It was right here, right in front of us. My nephew was playing on the floor in the den while we were watching. I was glad to have him near. He didn't know anything about what was going on. He was putting curlers in his hair. I was taking pictures of him. As I watched, I kept thinking one thing. I wasn't afraid or unsure. I was angry. Who thought they had a right to come into MY country and do this to MY people? Moments later, the news cut away to Washington, D.C. The Pentagon had been attacked. We were listening to a woman, I can't remember her name, talking from her cell phone. She had see the plane hit. She was on the highway that turns into the Pentagon grounds. The scenes there were as unbelievable as the scenes from New York. We heard a loud plane go overhead travelling southeast. Within minutes there was news from home that a plane had crashed in Somerset County, just 60 or so miles from Pittsburgh. We learned that downtown Pittsburgh was being evacuated. I couldn't understand why. We live in America. We are strong and safe. What was going on? All day long, on that beautiful late summer day, we sat inside watching television, not wanting to pull ourselves away. As the day progressed, we learned a lot. We learned who our attackers were - how they hate. We learned that in the face of this great tragedy, America was still here. We learned that in crisis, our country rallied, quickly and as one, to protect us, to keep our freedom going. To this day I am struck by one thing - no one panicked. People reacted, but there were no riots or looting or people attacking each other. Instead, there was comforting, aiding, sharing. People reached out, consoled one another, assured each other. This was more awe inspiring than the level of tragedy of these events. In the days that followed, we learned one more important thing. We learned that heroes come in all forms in those who serve us daily as firefighters, medical personnel, law enforcement, in those who make and enforce our laws, in those who defend us, in those who touch our lives in any way. In the year that has followed, we've been dedicated to upkeeping our patriotism and to being aware of our surroundings. We are discovering new things about ourselves as a nation and what we believe. We are taking positive, strenuous steps to ensure freedom at home and abroad. We are still here. America is still strong. And I am still angry. I want the cowards who participated, planned, funded or otherwise encouraged these attacks to know we will not go quietly. I have never been afraid to say, act or be an American. I will not let anyone intimidate me or try to make me ashamed of my country. America is not always the perfect country, but she is still the best country on earth. I LOVE HER! I have news for Osama bin Laden and his followers - don't come my way. I won't put up with you. I, and millions of my countrymen, won't let you do this again! In every other way, life here is pretty much normal. My nephew is now 3. But we will not forget what happened - not ever!! This day, September 11, 2002, has been a very emotional day. I am more proud of my country and it's citizens than ever. I am honored by the men and women who gave their lives one year ago. Their memories will be with etched in every one of us forever. It was fitting to have the Gettysburg Address read at the Ground Zero ceremony as it was for President Bush to rally the Pentagon festivities and for Appalachian Spring to be played in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. All of these were proper tributess to mark the day. My hope is that this day, Patriot Day, stays with us always as a day as important as the Fourth of July. I want the families of those who died to know we are with them and cherish them. We are all survivors, we will overcome our enemies, and we will endure. I switched on the radio in the bathroom to listen to NPR and the presenter made the announcement that Alan Greenspan had been taken to a secure location and that the financial markets had been suspended. I was bewildered, but I could tell from the tone in his voice that something serious had happened, although I had no inkling what. I headed back into my bedroom to switch on the TV, as getting information from the radio seemed to take too long. The first image I saw was a plane hitting the WTC as they were looping the same videotape footage over and over again. I just stood there in shock trying to take in all the information from the past few hours, compressed into seconds - it was overwhelming. They said that the Pentagon had been also been hit and that another airplane was unaccounted for. I flipped through the other channels only to see that the majority of them were covering the same story. Due to the time zone difference between East and West coast, the events had already taken place but there was still a lot of confusion. I decided to call my girlfriend to see if she had heard the news, which was pretty na?ve when I look back. At that time, the whole world was witnessing the carnage except maybe people still asleep in Hawai'i. My next instinct was to call my family back in England to tell them that I was okay. I was silly in a way since I was nowhere near the attacks on the East coast, but at the same time I found it comforting to speak to them. Unlike me they had watched the events unfold as they happened, and in a way I was grateful that I didn't have to go through the anxiety of what was going to happen next. I finished getting ready and headed into work, as I wanted to be around people. As I arrived downtown I saw the Transamerica building sealed off by police fearing a terrorist attack there. When I arrived at my office it was nearly empty and a manager there told me that in lieu of events everyone was allowed to go home. I decided then to go to my girlfriends apartment, where we sat watching CNN for the rest of the day trying to make sense of it all. Tell us your story: I was at my children's school in the conference room helping out with the PTA fund raiser, when several office personel ran in and yell turn on the TV, a plane hit one of the Twin Towers in NY!!! We all seemed frozen as we watched the news unfold. As several parents were also there helping with the fund raiser, the prinicpal asked our input on how do we tell the children? By this time the other tower had been hit as well as Washington. I knew my kids were safe at this point and worried more about my husband who was working at the Orlando Int'l Airport with FBI clearance. I called him to find out that he was in an closed door meeting, they were trying to figure what they should do next. I will also tell you that Sept 11, 2001, was our 14th wedding annv. Needless to say, all dinner plans were cancelled. Less than 5 mins after our first phone call, I received a call from my husband to inform me that there has been a bomb threat at the airport and he just didn't want me to see it on the news first. At this point we started to have parents arriving to take thier children home from school early. I spent the next 2 hours helping release about 500 kids out of 900. I was very proud of our parents, they were calm and orderly. Once the day was over I was able to go home with my children 4 & 7, I had to explain about the day as well as explain daddy will be working late. Once I got them settled, it was my turn to fall apart!!! I went in the shower so my children could not hear me and cried uncontrollably, not only for my husband, whom I was scared for, but for the people that were hurt or died and thier families. Once I got myself together I sat with my children as we prayed to keep daddy safe as well as the families of the ones lost. I got my children to bed and just watched tv as I waited for my husband to come home safe. He did arrive home safe, about 2am the next day, but was on call. Needless to say we did not get much sleep that night like most people in America. We just layed in bed, with our boys beside us, and clung to each other, scared to let go. I will never look at life or my family the same again, as well as my husband and I decided then to change the day we celebrate our anniversary. I smelled smoke while aboard the train & had a very eerie feeling as the train pulled in. The S/B #6 train always slows down before pulling into that station but that morning I knew something was different. The smell of smoke was more intense and people were in a panic running towards the trains. I went into panic mode myself. As I exited the stairwell on Frankfort Street I walked into total hysteria. A man from my job was using a Bull horn annoucing that the WTC had just been attacked by terrorist & for everyone to leave the lower Manhattan area. I walked around the newspaper stand and I saw the gaping holes in both towers. I saw people walking as fast as they could over the Brooklyn Bridge. I saw a woman who's skin was charred in front of City Hall park. I saw people jumping from the building. My first response was my husband is in that building. He was my ex-husband but I knew he was there. He was a NYC Firemen. His name was Peter Alexander Bielfeld. He had just left my apartment the morning before, September 10th, 2001. He wanted me to go with him to the rededication of his firehouse on Prospect Avenue. Ladder 42 Engine 73. His firehouse was closed for about a year & a half for renovations. I just watched in total desperation as the black smoke billowed from the higher floors. I felt like I was in a semi-conscious state. The whole thing was surreal. Peter & I had been divorced for years but were never out of each others lives. We would date each other, argue with each other break up for a short while and go back with each other. It's just how we were together. We both had different relationships. No one that seemed to be worthy of either one of us. He even had a daughter with an ex-girlfriend. That was a very difficult time in his life. I can't take back that horrible day. If I could I would remove it from history. I will love Peter up until I take my very last breath. On September 11, I was in the US Air Force in a class that prepares military members for the transition back to civilain life. As I walked into class, the television was on. I seen smoke coming off of one of the Twin Towers. We all thought a small plane had accidentally crashed into the tower. Then, we watched as the second plane came and hit the second tower, that was when we knew for sure that was no accident. As soon as that happened, the teacher, who was a civilian, informed us that the base was immediately closing to civilians and that we were all to report immediately to our duty stations. (We were all dressed in civilian clothes, which was a requirement for the class.) That was when things got hectic. I went straight to my duty station, in my skirt and high heels and when I walked in, everyone was glued to the TV. We had to stay there for a few hours. We were all so much in shock. It didn't really hit us until all the work phones and personal cell phones started ringing like crazy. Our families and friends calling to make sure we were ok, and to tell us they were ok, and also to tell us of people that may not be ok. To tell us of family and friends that may have been in the towers. I know for at least two weeks my husband and I were glued to the television. Tears running from our eyes every so often. It was just such a sad sad time. It was so hard to see all of the people who were looking for their loved ones. I remember flying to visit my family soon after and just uncontrolably crying on the plane, just imagining how scary and horrible it must have been for all of those innocent people, and how unbelievably brave all of those men and women were on the planes that tried to stop those horrible men! Then sooo many people lost loved ones, some lost more than one. I also remember going to eat at a restaurant with my co-worker in our uniforms. A man came over and thanked us for all that we sacrifice for our country and he bought our dinner. That really touched us. I will always have my favorites spots that I visit, but remembering the World Trade Center will always be there. What a beautiful place it was. When you got off the E train, the last stop, (WTC), what a sight for soar eyes. That was the stop also to go the South Seaport. This will always be in our minds and our hearts, but we are Americans and we are strong. No one will ever take that from us. It seems to me that everyone wants to be here for the freedom.
