Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was home with my husband and daughter, getting her ready for Kindergarten. My sister called and said put on the local cable news station, that one of the towers had an explosion. It was so new, that no one knew it was a plane yet. I can still feel how I felt about those dead already and those on the upper floors. Then people started calling in, saying it was a plane. But nothing was confirmed yet. As we watched the TV, we saw the 2nd plane hit the second tower. We knew there was something terribly wrong. Never in the history of NY, had even 1 plane ever hit a building in the city. My husband wanted to keep our daughter home, but I wanted to keep things semi normal even though this event would change NY and America forever. As we continued to watch the TV stations, we also listened to our police scanner. Once my husband heard a call dispatched to a patrol car, that a school was contacted by phone, that the children should not be out a lunch time today, the decision was made. If we were under attack, our child would be with us. We pulled her out of school as so many other parents did the same. We found out my husband's cousin was safe that day. He was off from work. Twice he has escaped from terrorism in the World Trade Center, since he was there for the garage bombing, as well. His fellow workers did not make it then. In the days that passed, I could not keep my daughter away from the news. At night I would change the TV station to one of her channels and the next day, I would hear the news. I told her, "Just watch your station, Honey." And she would reply,"I want to watch the Twin Towers, Mommy." Eventually, it caught up with her and she wouldn't go to bed by herself. I finally told her that all the bad people were caught and she said, "Even the ones under the sand?" We had never spoken about Bin Laden or the deserts. She learned this from the TV. I told her, "even the ones under the sand." She has gotten better, but she is still not 100%. For the 1 year anniversary, I kept the TV off. I knew the school would touch on it slightly and I would speak with her afterwards. She was okay that day. But she has decided on her own to make a book as a tribute to that fateful day. I have saved her drawing from last year of the Towers burning and will keep all these things together. Life is truly not the same since these attacks, but I believe the worst thing we could do, is stay at home and be afraid. Watching the TV, that day, was like watching a scene from a movie, with all the smoke surrounding the city. But we will not give the terrorists completely what they want. We cherish our freedom. Not a day goes by that I don't think of that horrible day. I thank God that no one I knew personally perished, but I do have friends who did have someone perish. I continue to go to the baseball games and basketball games. And when I sit in Madison Square Garden or ride the trains and subways, I do often wonder if we'll be under attack again. But life goes on, and for the sake of those innocent people who perished that day, I need to live for them. God Bless America!!! Tell us your story: when i woke up that morning it started just like any other day, but the whole world changed in the amount of time it took me to take a shower. it was like something i had never felt before. i wasn't scared and i wasn't exactly shocked either. it was strange. the events that happened that day haven't really had a strong impact on me. i didnt know anyone directly involved with the events. the on thing that had an emotional impact on me was all the children who lost their mothers or fathers that day. my dad died when i was two months old and i have had to grow up with only the memories of the people who knew him well. im seventeen now and i have just started to realize that he has been the missing piece in my life and that has had an impact on the kind of person i am. I feel i can relate to these children and i know that if they are raised in a good home and with the memories of their lost parents, they will turn out to be just fine. i wish them well. I wasn't quite sure how things were going to happen that day, and all of my friends and I were debating what wraith the US would retaliate with on whoever did that. It's still hard to picture everything that happened. . . But the thing is that it hardly effected me personaly because noone I know was really effected by it, but it did hit me like it hit the nation. I feel that retaliation is necessary, but haste will be our enemy in bombing efforts, for I'm a Catholic and I feel that no innocent's should be hit, however I do trust the military forces we have to hit the correct targets. When the plane came in to hit the pentagon, he was watching on the news for information on the World Trade Center attacks. As soon as the plane passed by, he was on his way down to the pentagon. The Navy Annex clinic was the first group to set up triage for the disaster. as people came in, My dad was the first to treat them. I was en route to my 5th period classwhen I heard something was wrong. I had a headache, so I stopped by the clinic in the building for some Motrin. while I was listening to the radio, I heard something about shutting down the government buildings in richmond, and I concluded that there was a bombing down there. It wasn't until I got into 5th period that I found out that the World trade enter and the Pentagon had been atcked with commercial aircraft. I didn't see my dad until about 11:30 that night, and that was only long enough for him to say, "hi, I'm leaving for New York, and I don't know when I'll be back". We didn't see him for another week. He was on The UHS Comfort aiding in the recovery efforts at the world trade center. HE recived the bronze star for his work on that day. Tell us your story: I had just returned from my annual leave from Europe and was getting back to my business environment with full throttle--after one month of absence my desk was full and a major upcoming event on the 12th had to be prepared. So I started my work on Monday 10 with all the energy I had. I gathered with my team to see whether all preparations had gone according to schedule and after i realized that everything was on time I entered into the final dialogue with our Chinese business partners for a final briefing, since they were a part of the big meeting we were preparing for the 12th. And as it goes in China, I had to invite them for dinner on the 11th. The atmosphere was very pleasant that evening especially because everybody felt that both, we as well as the Chinese had done all to their best to make the meeting a success. So we decided to continue our evening and move on to a karaoke bar. I usually avoid these places mainly because it does not really reflect my attitude towards good entertainment and also for a simple reason: they usually don't have enough english songs for me, which makes me feel bored. But I decided to sponsor that part of the evening also, so I had to go and "give face" to my Chinese friends. One chinese song after the other appeared on screen but mine was still not coming and I decided to leave after the the one I had chosen--it was Frank Sinatra's "My Way". After almost one hour of waiting in that bar I could see that my song would be soon on-screen so I took over the microphone from a colleague who had just finished his song. I do not remember the exact time but it must have been between 2030 and 2100 hours local time, which is +12 hrs to New York time. Just at the very moment I wanted to start singing my mobile phone rang and I was quite annoyed. But I picked it up and was telling to my good friend that I have no time now 'cause I was in the middle of a song. He insisted and asked me whether I heard the news about a plane accident at the WTC--appearantly that was plane number one and nobody really believed it might have been a terror strike at that moment. I was very short with my comments and told him to call me later, I would be busy right now....So I sang my Sinatra song I had been waiting for! Time passed by, a second call comes in-this time from a friend in Shanghai. She was telling me about a second plane that hit the WTC. Her voice was trembling. That was the time when I asked my Chinese friends to switch from the karakoe video channel to national TV... CCTV1 was broadcasting the live pictures coming from CNN. I was looking once, twice and I looked back to the rest of the audience in the room and we thought we were in the movies. It was a mixture of disbelief and horror that shook us. The Chinese were sort of smiling, which was a clear signal to me that they were not able to cope with the situation so we quickly turned the TV back to video. I packed my things and rushed back to my hotel and was watching the catastrophe over and over again until i finally slept from fatigue.... One year later I still feel horrified about the idea this could happen to anybody, in any city, at any time and I hope our civilizations are andvanced and mature enough to cope with the imminent threat of terror. I came into the office and turned on the radio because there had been a plane crash in New York. We all listened in horror as the second plane was reported. Several factors will always make that day unforgettable on many levels for me. First of all, I was three months pregnant and I was so worried for the unborn baby in me - what kind of world would my baby know? Secondly, I truly believed we were under attack and that this was the beginning of WWIII. Thirdly, we had a college-age intern in our office from Germany, she was terrified and didn't know if she would be immediately deported, or if she would be allowed to return home or not. Well, all my life has been spent in New York City, I am a black male and have been from the foster care system to the welfare system to struggling with employment to being homeless because of no employment. I just got fed up! At 42 years of age I needed a change in my life and being in New York and have tried it all there was no way I was staying any longer. I got into a new relationship and had my first baby girl, Kiara, she is so beautiful not to mention she looks like her daddy. My patients had run out. I took my family and moved to Newark as a temperary stay until our next move. After a year we decided on moving to Charlotte. Well, I was the first to go and when I got everything together the rest of the family will come down. OK, I had a little trouble leaving and so I made a determination that I will leave on my birthday hook or crook so I pawned my camera and borrowed a few dollars and boarded the greyhound on September 7th. My employer was supposed to transfer me to that state and I was trying to change my Army Reserve Unit to Charlotte after 18 years of New York National Guard and Army Reserve. I was on the public phone in Charlotte trying to talk to my employer in NY on September 11 at 8am and they told me to call back. On the way back to my cousins apartment someone on the street said a plane hit the World Trade Center! I thought about a small plane may have strayed and hit it or something not to bad. I went and turned on the Television and I thought this is not real! Then I sat down and screamed OH MY GOD! about 10 times. Then the second plane hit I could not contain myself with swearing that we are at war! I felt helpless and then my fiance and children are there. Then the Towers fell. I cried for about an hour alone with the TV. I worked in the Towers and traveled everyday from NJ day and night through the Towers. The day I left NY was from the NJ Path. My employer location was on 6th Avenue and 51st Street. My Reserve unit was the Combat Support Hospital at FT. Hamilton. I immediatly wanted to go back to help, when I called my family they told me to stay where I am so they can move. I stayed. At this time I can't watch anything involving the Trade Center tragedy without a tear. I was leaving a meeting from work and just got on the highway headed to my first appointment of the day. I remember thinking what a beautiful day it was, so I opened my sunroof and turned on the raido. The radio announcers were yelling and saying oh my God-oh my God I could not make sense of what was going on, cars on the highway began to pull over and put their flashers on. A shaken radio announcer Mary Skanlin from Kc-101 sadly reported that the World Trade Center in New York City had been hit by a commerical airliner. I pulled over and picked up my cell phone and called my boyfriend, I wanted to know if he was listening to the radio to make sure I was understanding what I was hearing. Working fairly close to home, I raced there and turned on the Tv, thats when the second plane hit the second tower, I could not believe what I was seeing. I felt my heart sink into my stomach. I was in shock and tears welled up in my eyes, I immediatly called my boyfriend again and begged him to come home. The next broadcast come over the Tv, the Pentagon had been hit by another plane and now they feard more hijacked planes were out there. I thought to myself, this is it, we are under full attack and my heart pounded anticipating the next hit. The intensity in the air was unbearable. Then all hell broke loose, the the first tower collasped. As it fell, to watch all those people running for saftey from smoke and debries was too much to watch. I buried my face into a pillow and sobbed, felling so scard and helpless. My boyfriend, Billy arrived home, he was also in shock as he listed to the radio on him drive home. It wasn't until he seen the visual on Tv that he began to cry. We held each other tight and then the next broadcast, another plane crashed in Pennsylvaina, and then the second tower collasped. We felt completely helpless and scared. I called my parents, my brother and my sister, I needed to hear there voices. Then Billy and I decided to walk down to the church at the end of our street. They were just letting the kids out of school, there were allot of parents around scrambeling to pick up their children. Everyone had the same look on there faces...shock, fear and overwhelming saddess. We walked into church and the sound of people crying and praying still gives me goose bumps. For us, it was the only place that we felt we needed to be. Even now just thinking about these horrible acts of terror stirs up the exact same feelings I felt that day. I don't think I will ever completely recover from that feeling of sorrow and loss even though I did not personally know anyone who perished in the attacts, I feel stangely close to them and I think I always will. Tell us your story: I don't think I will ever forget what happened to our family on September 11th, I first heard when I woke up later then usual (I didn't go to school that day) and my mother told me that the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York had just been hit by two airplanes as if that wasn't bad enough, I was about to hear that we had been hit closer to home. The most devastating aspect of September 11th was when I heard that a plane had gone through the window of the Pentagon. I went numb I couldn't cry at the moment I couldn't take it all in. My Uncle sometimes goes to the Pentagon for meetings as he is an airforce doctor. My family has always said that my uncle Tim was born under a lucky star. September 11th drove this point closer to home then ever. Every year without fail my Uncle always met in the same room in the pentagon. However, because my Uncle felt that the group was getting stagnet he chose to move the group to a different location. All of his collegues protested that it was an inconvenience, eventually though they all agreed. All of us my family and my Uncle's family didn't realize the significance of his decision to change his meeting place that month. It turns out that the plane went through the window of the room where my uncle would have been at that exact moment had he not made his simple decision to change his meeting room. I realize that my family was one of the lucky ones we didn't lose anyone. I just wish everyone else had been as lucky as we were. We watched as the second plane hit in horror. My niece was in NY on business and I was terrified. We took the Amtrac and got into Boston Monday evening. Went to Logan airport to rent a car and drove the few miles to our motel. We talked about all the things we hoped to see in Boston on Tuesday before we once again boarded Amtrac on Wednesday to head back home. The next morning the world had changed, forever. My husband said something is going on in New York - they are talking about it on his police scanner. We turned on the tv and sat in horror as the pictures and the devastation began. It was not possible to fatham the depth of the pain and suffering that was going on there. It felt like it was our neighbors who were parishing. And the date was 9-11. After the plane hit the White House I told my husband we needed to do something normal, like get dressed and find a restaurant. Everywhere we went the faces told the same story we felt. Just so much shock and disbelief. Our waitress could not understand why the restaurant was open. She felt everyone should be home trying to deal with this loss. We live 30-40 miles from Wright Patterson Airforce Base, located in Dayton, Ohio. I told my husband we had to get home because who knew what would happen next. Our best course would be to get inland and head North I needed to be with my babies - my 2 girls, ages 37 and 23 and the 5 grandchildren. If our personal world was going to end too, I had to be with my family. We tryed to call home but the lines were all out. I finally reached my sister at work and told her we were going to drive home and to call the kids and tell them we're okay and on our way. On the drive home it was very strange. There were no contrails in the sky, no planes, trains or public transportation. Everywhere we went, our gas attendants, waitresses and almost everyone we talked to, had some connection to the towers. They had a relative or knew someone who escaped or was missing. The closer we got to home the more frantic I felt. I was afraid something was going to happen before we could get there. I just needed to be with my babies. We finally walked in our house and my oldest daughter was here. I grabbed her and hugged her and cryed and cryed. I talked to or held all of them that evening. Tell us your story: On a normal day my wife Karen and I drive down to work together to midtown Manhattan, that morning I had a doctors appointment and my wife traveled down by bus to Port Authority. I finished my appointment and headed down the Palisades Pkwy towards the George Washington Bridge as I approached the bridge I saw we were being detoured away from the bridge,I thought there was an automobile accident. I had also just put my radio on and heard that the first plane hit the Trade Center. After turning back towards home I heard the second plane hit and I knew we were under attack! Meanwhile my wife arrived into Port Authority not knowing anything was going on until a friend of hers told her. She was stuck in the city and I had no way of getting her out. My wifes co-workers apartment wasn't far from the Empire State Building and all night they heard sirens and smelled the smoke from the burning Towers. Tell us your story: My girlfriend Robyn and I planned on being out of work on September 11, 2001, and going for a bike ride across the Minuteman Rail Trail from Bedford, MA. into downtown Boston. The plan was to have lunch there and bike back. We headed out of Worcester, MA. at about 7:30 am., car packed, bikes on the rack. It was gorgeous weather and we congratulated ourselves on our choice of days. We got to Concord Common a little before 8:30. I parked my car in a public lot just outside the Common area. We had our bikes off the rack and headed out, all before the attacks occurred. We had to bike over to the trail head, in the next town, and arrived without incident. Once we got on the trail, we thought it odd that all we could hear along the way were talk radio shows. And loud. No music. There were a lot of contractors and builders around Lexington at that time, and all truck radios were at full blast. We stopped at a bench along the way about 10:30 and could hear church bells ringing in Lexington Center. We were laughing, thinking they were practicing Christmas music. Hark,the Herald Angels Sing it sounded like. We even started singing. Talk about irony. We got into downtown Boston via Commonwealth Ave at just about noon. Lunch was at a sidewalk cafe we picked out, doubling back after making our choice. We entered the dark interior to find every customer in the restaurant clustered around the bar, the TV blaring. We couldn't see the screen from where we stood. We shrugged it off and picked out a table back out on the sidewalk, doing an about face in the doorway. Our waitress was not talkative, not a word about any of the tragedy that happened. And we were too far from the TV inside to hear what was going on. Traffic headed past on busy Commonwealth Ave, and nothing seemed out of whack. We did not pick up on any conversations coming from pedestrian traffic passing by. And then we headed back. We wanted to beat the 5 o'clock exodus down Route 2 heading west out of Boston. We passed the entrance to Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford at about 3:30. The cars were lined up on the narrow access street, and police were not letting a lot of angry people through the gates. Still, we had no clue nor did we stop to investigate or listen to what the police were saying. When we got back out to Main Street in Concord, Robyn decided to call her mom on the cell phone just to let her know where we were and when we would arrive home. When Robyn screamed into the phone, and relayed the information to me, we just looked at each other and claimed it couldn't be true. We peddled back to the parking lot, found that my car, the only one left, was chained in. The state had declared all national landmarks off limits and fair targets for any other destruction that might go on. I called the police and they told me one of the gates didn't have a lock on it, to just put the chain back when we left. All the way home in the car we couldn't talk, ears tuned to the radio. Once home, my husband was in front of the TV, by now it was after 5:30, and I saw my first view of the planes hitting the Towers. Robyn and I still can't believe we spent the whole day in ignorant bliss, ignoring tell tale signs along the way. My overwhelming sadness at what happened was postponed, but I shall never forget how ironic it was that Robyn and I didn't recognize the possibly of something of that magnitude happening in our country, along with the rest of America. Any carefree, naive, escaping-for-the-day thinking I ever have again will always be on the lookout for those tell tale signs of something gone seriously wrong. All I could hear on the radio was that one of the towers in New York was hit by a plane. My mind went blank. I changed the station in my car to every one imaginable and they all said the same thing. So when I got to work, I ran inside and immeadiately called my boyfriend who was sleeping at home. Unfortunately, I broke the disturbing news to him. He turned on the television and told me what he saw. Then to make things worse, he saw the second plane hit the other tower, while I was on the phone with him. The first thing out of his mouth was "Oh S***. Honey, this was not an accident." I then asked what he meant and he then proceeded to tell me what happened. I could not beleive it. My fear of being on a plane has just now increased dramatically. I opened the store as I usually would, but business was just not the same. I contacted the owners and they were extremely upset at it all. The store was to be shut down for the day so we could spend the day with our families. However, I think that the hardest part for the business owners was that they were of Middle Eastern decent and concerned for their lives. Especially after they heard who did it. After we closed the store down that day, we went home to our families and were glued to the TV, watching the horrifying acts that were happening just on the other side of the U.S. You could almost feel the pain from New York just through watching the raw emotion coming from people who lost their loved ones. But those loved ones are angles watching over them now. Doesn't it make you wonder what was going through the terrorists' minds during the time that they were taking thousands of lives? People don't care about human life anymore. Especially people who have committed hate crimes. They just asume that if you look a certain way or dress a certain way that you just have to be. Wake up people. If you don't know, don't assume. America is the land of the free. And that is the way it will always be. So American's need to get use to seeing people of different religions, races and creeds. Didn't we go through this in the 60's? Who cares what color your skin is? Or what religion you practice? People come here to be free of all criticism. On a certain night when America was asked to stand on a corner with a candle to represent our huge candle light vigil for New York, everbody on my block did this. We actually had people stop and get out of their cars and join us. That is Unity and America needs to learn that.
