I was wearing a set of earphones and was watching is people rushed into academic buildings. Being a freshman college student, I thought this was normal. A few minutes later I learned that September 11 would be anything but a normal day. I walked into my college's Communications Building and looked at the sight of both Twin Towers burning. A started to ask questions, but no one knew what was happening. I went down the hall to my classroom, and found my class watching coverage of the WTC. My teacher then shut the tv off stating that if anything important were to happen someone would let us know. That was at 9:25 in the morning. As class ended at 10:45 we learned of the attack on the Pentagon, the plane crash in Western PA, the collapse of the Twin Towers, and (erroneously) of car bombs going off at the State Department in Washington. All through the day, people walked around in stunned silence. What had been an upbeat, happy college campus only a day before was now a scared part of America. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My boyfriend called me early that morning (9/11) and told me that there had been an attack on the United States. I was on my way to work, but switched on the TV. My first thoughts were that he had been wrong. It surely must have been a terrible accident instead. Then, I stood like a deer staring into the headlights of an oncoming car as I watched the twin towers fall to the ground on the screen of my television. My heart raced as I thought and worried about our business partners at the Amex offices in the area. Did our friends escape? Or were they trapped in the rubble with the brave firemen who had just climbed the steps of death. Tears streaked my cheeks. "How could this happen?" I kept repeating to myself. It was just so unbelivable, so overwhelming. Later, the pain would come, a pain that continued to reside inside of me this past year. I discovered that 12 of our employees died in the attack. One of these individuals was a kind woman to whom I'd spoken to many times and worked with over the telephone. I'd suddenly felt a piercing in my heart and knew that I would never forget her. Over the past year, I also heard the tales and stories of many other co-workers who had narrowly escaped from death. And these were the stories that I'd heard first-hand. Many more were told by all the families who had lost their loved ones. I grieved for them all. A year later, I don't ask how this could happen. I know how this happened. The United States, a kind nation, that admits so many diverse peoples of the world, the noble nation that offers freedom and liberty for all who enter, the nation that is richest in the world only through the hard work and contributions of her people, that nation was attacked from within. We were attacked by terrorists who never sought our gifts to enjoy, who never sought to pursue a life full of opportunities. We were attacked in contrast by those who suppressed the rights of others. I've seen and heard so much about the beliefs of these Arab nations who condemn us and I wonder why we continue to allow these individuals to enter our country. Especially in times of terror as all nations face today, why do we continue to let these warmongers enter our country. I believe only those who believe in our way of life, those who flee from ferocious despots, those seeking freedom, including religious freedom, those who come to America to share the good life, only these should be able to enter and join the melting pot of a freedom loving peoples. The people who have joined the terrorist organizations do not believe in this freedom. Therefore, deport those who advocate this abomination and never allow anyone to come to our land who does not share our beliefs in freedom. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I suppose the strangest thing about 9/11 is how I was told. I was in class when the planes actually struck. My teacher at the time was one of those teachers that hated if Cell Phones were on during class, so, we had no real link to the outside world, outside of that classroom. I went in late, I imagine, and fell asleep during the class, figuring the day would be no more exciting on some random weekday then it was any other random weekday. I left the class with the knowledge that I had another one later on that day, and so, I was headed home for a power nap before my second class. At the time, I was on decent, but strained terms with one of my roomates, and it was she who I ran into on the way to my nap. She knew I'd been up almost all night doing homework, and so, when she told me that someone had flown a plane into the World Trade Centers, and it was all over the news, I automatically assumed that she was lying to me in order to get me all hyped up. (She did strange things like that.) I gave her some sort of automatic, tired responce, and as a retort, she just gave me the news channel number that she had been watching. So, it was on that note that I went home, and turned on the TV, just to see if she was in fact right, and it was then, that I watched the first tower burn to the ground. I think for a moment, I was in some sort of shock. Not because I'd ever been to the World Trade Centers, or knew anyone who worked at the World Trade Centers, but just because of the wildly askew versian of reality that this presented. It was like watching an action movie, where someone like Bruce Willis had just had to try and save the American way of life. Planes that took down whole skyscrapers of that magnitude in one fell swoop just weren't real. What else could I do? I woke up my other two roomates, and did the only other thing I could thing of... made a pot of coffee. That seems to be the thing people do the most when they have nothing else to do, make a pot of coffee. So there I sat, with my little Boston mug (it was the closest thing I had to an I "heart" NY mug, so I used it), and I watched as the towers fell, and the journalists and experts speculated, and the damage was calculated, all in technicolor right before my very eyes. Once everything was said and done, both towers had fallen, and the reruns of the damage was being shown, I left my apartment, and went to be around people, to prove that the people that I knew and loved hadn't been taken in any stray disasters. Those people, some I knew, most I didn't, were gathered in the Student Union, and there was a rallying group of new patriots that decided to give blood. They needed cars, and people, and someone would give you a ride if you wanted to go. So I went. It seemed like a good idea, what else was I going to do? Fly to New York and move the wreckage? Even if I could help there, would the planes even take me? The short answer was no. So I gave blood. There were 7 or 8 of us, as I recall. And we waited from 2 in the afternoon, after treating ourselves to a hearty lunch from BK, to 10 at night. We left once to go get toys from the 711 near by, just for something to do, a pack of cards and one of those little magnetic checker sets. When we came back, the parking lot was being patrolled by cops, and no one else was being allowed in, so we parked across the street, and walked over. I was the last to give blood that day. They only took me because I didn't have a car, and I'd been waiting for 8 hours. I hadn't eaten much in the time between, so I ended up passing out right after they finished taking what they needed. We passed jokes about how at least I'd waited until the bag was filled... The boy who had driven me to the bloodbank drove me home, I don't remember his name, and I don't think I could identify him by sight. He had to help me to the car because I was still a little woozy. He kept asking me if I was okay, and I remember feeling a bit better, even if the world was a few degrees off center. I had done what I could. I was fine. Later on, I learned something that disgusted me. In the time that my friends (new and old) and I were in the Bloodbank, someone had called in a phony bomb threat, that was the reason the cops had been everywhere. They hadn't said sooner because they didn't want to start a panic. Confidentially, I didn't think that any one of us would have left, if even just to be defiant about the whole situation. "Sure, blow us up, we'll die as patriotic citizens damnit." Eat that, Phantom Bombers. And a year passed, and here I am now. Almost exactly a year later from when I rallied and left with the group to go give blood. I think I'm going to make myself a pot of coffee, or take myself out to BK. Tell us your story: On September 11,2001, I was secure, comfortable, without grief, needing no help, just ensconced in the daily routine of living, with my daughter Alisa. And then, within a short span of time, my life changed. Suddenly no longer secure or comfortable, I WAS grief and in need of help; and feeling utterly helpless. As the fog of incredulous, painful magnitude lifted, that day as well as the ensuing days, brought about an amazing realization. While I cannot change events, I can become security for my neighbor while I comfort him. I can be there in the grief of others and help in any way possible - all this while being ensconced in the daily routine of living. During my 3rd block class the principal came on the intercom and reported that New York and the Pentagon was under terrorist attacks. The class was stunned. Tell us your story: melissa biller emergency room nurse i work the swing shift so i was sound asleep when the phone rang. i normally ignore it but for some reason i reached over on the 1st ring and answered it. it was my mother who lives just near me and the first thing she said was "turn on the tv right now". through sleepy eyes i searched for the remote and flicked on the tv. at that same moment my mother with a tearful voice said "a commercial plane hit the world trade center!". my first responce was "where is hank?!". hank is my brother who is a pilot for delta-asa. my mother said "he just landed in atlanta...i just got a call from him saying that he was all right". "thank god" i said and at that same moment with my eye on the tv i watched in horror as the second plane hit the other tower. my heart sunk to my stomach and for several minutes my mother and i sat speechless on the phone. finally i said "they may need me at work early so i'm gonna get in the shower". "okay" she responded and we hung up. there was nothing more to say! without words in those few minutes we had had one of those mother-daughter wordless conversations filled with many emotions. i went to work and when i arrived there was coas as usual, but there were also hugs and moments shared as only emergency staff can fully understand....though these were more profound than anything that we had ever gone through together. the day was busy and long since we live near the largest military base in the u.s. and with everyone on high alert thing were tense. the tv's ran all day on the same news channel, the patients were more subdued than usual, and everyone spoke volumes with just a look or a touch....for that one day changed everything and everyone forever! suddenly our own petty needs or grievences weren't so important, and all we could do was mourn and pray. since that time things have kinda gone back to normal...people complaining, re-focusing on work and daily life, road rage, and movies lines, and all the stuff that we think is so very important at the time. but, i will remember as will my children for as long as we live the day the world stood still and quiet and were all one people in love and pray. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Fast asleep, my hotel phone rang. I answered it. My friend and my LEC President, Betsy Tettelbach, was on the other end. She said "turn on your TV." Grappling with the remote, I did as she said. Being her LEC Vice-President, I already knew how to follow her directions to a tee. I couldn't believe what was being conveyed over the airwaves. An airplane had gone into one of the World Trade Center towers. My God, I hope it wasn't one of our airplanes! Please don't let it be anyone I know. My God, all the people that have just died! What a horrible thing! Much more horrible than I could have ever imagined. How could this be happening? So many thoughts running through my head all at once, so many questions. I'm not a patient person, I wanted answers. That's when the second plane hit. The horror just got worse. I called my husband in Charlottesville, VA. He knew I wasn't flying, but it was still an event that had to be shared in some way with other people. My connection with him on the cell phone was not great. I was doing the window hug and twist. Being in this particular room in Washington DC kept my cell signal to a minimum so I had to try every way I could think of to keep the connection open. After speaking with him, conveying our disbelief and also our love, we hung up. And that's when we learned of the plane hitting the Pentagon. I had to call him back to let him know I was okay. I spoke with his supervisor who passed the word on. I decided to go to Betsy's room and watch the TV with her. I knew I was supposed to be getting ready for a meeting, but this was too much to handle alone. Plus I didn't know if the plans were still on. We were supposed to begin Day 1 of supermediation with the company today at the National Mediation Board. Our strike deadline was coming up fast and furious on Septemeber 15th. Now one of our planes could have been flown into the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon or the ground in Pennsylvania. My God, it was a possibility! How trivial the strike deadline seemed now. Our negotiating team sat together in Betsy's room glued to the television. We were shocked and horrified. As news came out of the flight humbers, relieved. It was not one of our airplanes. The co-workers that we are so close to did not perish in this horrible act of terrorism. But how were we going to take care of our members now? We still needed new work rules, pay rates and benefits. How would we support the mourning and at the same time rally the troops to fight for what they deserved. The situation was such an oxymoron. We felt horrible about everything and were totally deflated and defeated. The National Mediation Board decided to extend our strike deadline for one more week. It was hoped that both sides could regroup from the events of September 11th and come to the table to get this contract ironed out. It did happen. It's not a perfect contract, but it'll do considering all that everyone went through. We look forward to tackling the issues we had to let slip by the wayside in 2004. I was asleep when I woke up with a pain on my chest and my heart was racing. I turned on the TV and was shocked at what i saw. I had just wittness the second plain crash. I started to cry even though I didn't know anyone from New York it was sad to see thousands of people's lives gone forever. All I thought was what about the babies and the family that well be left behind from this tragedy. But at least I know that I have friends in the military that are risking their lives for us and even the people who risked their lives last year on this same day. I know it seems hard when so much life is burried beneath the ruble. But we must look past the terror and devastation. Bring this awful event into speculation. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September is beautiful in suburban New York. September 11 dawned perfectly-no humidity, clear blue skies, 80 ish degrees. Too nice a day to be in school. I was in my Personal Writing class; I heard some mumbling from the students about something going on in New York City, 20 miles southeast of us in Nyack. I shooshed the students and they went back to writing. The principal walked to my door and whispered that a plane had crashed in one of the towers at the World Trade Center. She urged quiet. She left. A few minutes later a security guard yelled down a quiet hallway- there's been a bombing in New York City. The students panicked. Over the loudspeaker, an adult said any student who wanted to leave the classroom could go to a special class. Students were upset as they had relatives or friends in the city. School continued, though we all walked around shell shocked. The phones didn't work. My 15 year old son tried to call me, and couldn't get through. I worried. The school was under a lock in and only those students whose parents who came to pick them up could leave. There was an eerie feeling of shock, fear, unrest and uncertainty. Students were subdued and the halls were strangely quiet between classes. On my free periods, I wandered just as many students did, trying to wrap my mind over the enormity of the situation. Some teachers had radios on in the teacher prep area; I refused to go to the room where a tv was on and students were congregating. I waited until I got home to watch tv. My 15 year old and husband were home watching the major stations who repeatedly showed the bombing, people running from the scene, and the chaos that ensued. I sent my 15 year old to meet my 7 year old at the bus stop. I wanted the tv to be off before he came in. In his elementary school, the bombing had not been discussed. I briefly told him there was a serious accident in New York City. We asked him if he had any questions, but he didn't. It was impossible to get a phone line. I communicated to others over the internet. Somehow, I was able to get through to my sister who lived in Florida, and not to my parents who live five miles away. I remember sitting on the front step on that beautiful early fall night. It was silent outside, like after a snowfall. Perhaps even quieter as there were no planes flying overhead. Trucks that rambled down 9W toward the city had been diverted elsewhere. It was eerie- this quiet and peace. I couldn't sleep that night. I wrote on my computer, filling in black words on the white screen about my concern, my anxiety, my assurance that things would iron themselves out in the morning. The truth began slowly to surface in the morning. The rescue teams were set up to save people- there were no people to save. Thousands were missing. Both towers had collapsed. A brother called from Paris -are you okay? Another brother and a college roommate called from California-are you okay? how is it in your part of the country? what do you know? we haven't heard much? My family members were safe and intact. School resumed as the administration wanted to maintain an air of normalcy. Some students' family members still weren't accounted for. School was quiet... "I know my brother will be all right...he left a message" Paige Crowther said to Tiffany Anderson as they hugged each other on the 11th. Tiffany's dad had also been in the city. Welles wasn't all right. As the days went by, bad news began to emerge. Paige's 24 year old brother hadn't been found. Welles had been my student years earlier and I remembered him as a hard working, yet fun loving young man. Stacey Sennas McGowan didn't call home to her husband and daughters, 4 and 5. Stacey had been a student of mine when I first taught, and while I hadn't seen her since 1976, I could still remember her vibrant, friendly smile and her eagerness always to excel. Una Mc Hugh, one of my children's reading teachers, had just returned from a child care leave. Her husband who'd abandoned a job as an executive to become a NYC firefighter, hadn't returned. Dennis Mc Hugh's wake was the biggest wake I'd ever been. Hundreds of us stood outside on a busy highway as we waited to give Una and her family her condolences. I sent Stacey's parents a letter about how I would remember Stacey as being "forever 13" in my eyes. At her memorial service, the church was so crowded we stood outside. I looked into the photograph of a smiling 38 year old woman who offered so much beauty to the world through her intelligence, her humor, her joy of living and cried. The following day, I attended Welles' service and cried as I listened to his 22 year old sister read his eulogy. I cried for Paige, who a few months later would be in my class and who idolized her big brother. It's been a year. Nyack High School parents, students and staff designed and built a memory garden. I can look at it outside my window. It's outlined in red brick in the shape of a heart. Bushes, perennials and annuals fill the space. My most poignant memory was of Stacey's daughers throwing flowers at the commemoration of the garden. I said to my 10th grade students who had seemed oblivious to the tragedy, "See those little girls. They don't have a mother anymore. Imagine what your life would be like without your mother..." That is the legacy we as Americans must face-a nation forever scarred by the needless deaths of men, women and children. The pointless deaths of business people, chefs, fire fighters, religious people, writers, police, rescue workers, artists...foreigners as well as Americans. I feel hopeful, not fearful. I pray that we will continue to heal, that we will continue to be compassionate, that we will work to create understanding amongst people. We will continue to understand that our similiarities as members of the human race should bind us together. T We should remember how important a smile is, a hug, a hand shake or a kiss can be to promote goodwill. Each day in my local newspaper are listings of people who have been identified. The horror continues for us in suburban New York. But greater than that is HOPE . All of a sudden, a co-worker that had been in the army came running into my office yelling, "There's been a plane that has flown into the Twin Towers!" I said, "I hope that everyone is okay." But then, he came into my office again saying that another plane had been crashed into the WTC and I said, "Oh my God, this is for real!" My co-worker then said that New York is under attack from terrorists. So, to myself I said a prayer. When I got a chance to see it on the news, it hurt me so dearly inside that tears started pouring out of my eyes. I started praying even more than I had been previously. It looked so sad to see people running for their lives. I thought you only see those kinds of things in movies. My prayers are for the children that lost their parents, and I pray that everyone that survived prays even more than they did before this happened. Everyday of our lives counts, and I call every hour and minute a blessing. Even though they claim that Bin Laden did it, the Bible says love thy enemy and it is not for us to judge. This tragedy has brought everyone closer to Christ. My prayers go out to the world. Thats day was going really good then when I walked in to class with my friends our jaws dropped when we say what was on the televvision in the class room, the first thing we heard was that the WTC were on fire because of a plane crash. Then we looked at the teacher adn she was sobbing uncontrolably, adn so that entire day we just watched the news in every class to figure out what was going on. 9-11-02 changed my life so quick and so noticebly. 9-11 made me adn other people see that every one is the same just different color, love is love for no matter who it is adn blood looks the same when it is shed over innocent people. No one in that class knew about the World Trade Center Towers had been purposely crashed into. By the time everyone had gotten to their third period class we all knew something was wrong. My class was Global Studies. We were watching the CNN news channel. At first I thought that people were just joking around about the World Trade Towers being hit by airplanes. Then I knew it wasn't a joke when I saw the replay of a plane crash into the first tower. A few minutes later a second plane crashed into the second tower. Another plane crashed into the Pentagon at around 9:28 a.m. It was so weird how everything happened so fast. The first plane crashed into the first World Trade Center Tower at about 8:48 a.m. and everything ended before 11:00 a.m. Everyone in my school was so devastated and felt bad for every person that died working at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I was afraid that the Power Project or Niagara Falls might be another target. I had hoped nothing too drastic would happen because it could be the start of World War Three. Maybe it could be the start to any war. Also I hoped that we didn't drop a bomb because someone may retaliate against us and it may never end. It is still weird how everything happened all in one day in the matter of only hours. In less than five hours everything went to pieces and people's lives were destroyed as well. I feel so bad for everything that happened. I hope that we find Osama bin Laden and he pays for what he has done. Even though it was not him that crashed airplanes into the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon, he ordered people to do it. I think that it's sad and stupid to kill yourself for your country. In their own way, these terrorists are like the suicide bombers of Palestine. They both were willing to die and kill people for their country. The impact on my life from the attack was great. I wanted to know what the weather was going to be like a typical day for me. I remember seeing the footage of the first plane hitting the first tower, I stood there in shock, I thought what a horrible accident. Then I saw the second plane hit the second tower and I fell to the ground. I knew at that point this was no accident, I felt scared , terrified at what had happened. I couldnt believe it, we had been attacked; tears began to fall from eyes and I began to shake. I went to work and listened to the radio all day to the reports about what was going on..I heard about the pentagon and I was devastated, those poor innocent people killed for nothing. How could this happen to us? We are a super power for cying out loud! Then the reports of possible terriost action just hit me like ton of bricks. I cried most of the afternoon, as I listened to reports of people jumping from the buildings and the buildings collapsing on many of them still trapped inside. All I wanted to do was go home curl up into a little ball and hide. I remember going home and hugging my children tighter than I ever had and then thinking thank you God for not letting it happen to me. Thank you God for allowing me to live to see my children grow up. Then I felt really guilty I felt that way. I prayed all night for those affected by this tragedy, prayed that they would all be found safe and sound, that no one would be lost. That all the families out there waiting for word on there loved one would recieve good news soon. I remember donating blankets and canned goods and teddy bears to relief funds for the people in need. September 11th will be a day I will never forget, it will live in my heart and memory forever as well as everyone elses I'm sure. You hit us once shame on us, you hit us twice you pay the price. Tell us your story: We saw the horror on television, after hearing 'rumors'...my friend and I walked down to our lunch room, and as we walked in, we saw the 1st tower smoking. Then, the room went silent as we saw a plane come from seemingly nowhere and slam into the 2nd tower. We were all stunned. Our thoughts and prayers were with our business associates at Empire Blue Cross. They lost fewer employees than others on higher floors, thank God. My reaction, as always is to write poetry.
