Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was unemployed on September 11, 2002, so I planned to spend the day at home looking for job openings online. I am a member of the Southside Kiwanis Club of Corpus Christi. Our club sponsors a Key Club in the Flour Bluff High School in my community and I am a club liason, so I attended the weekly meeting of the Key Club at FBHS that morning. We talked about upcoming service projects and opportunities for Key Club involvement with our club projects. After the meeting, I returned home. It was about 8:40 a.m. CDT. For some reason, I had left the television set on, so when I walked into the living room, I immediately saw one of the twin towers smoking. I thought there must have been an accident. Then I realized that some kind of attack had taken place. My 26-year old daughter called from Denver. She was crying and wanted to know what was happening. She had a newborn daughter and it all seemed very frightening to her. My son, who is in the Army and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, at the time, phoned soon after. They had been awakened in the barracks and put on alert. He called me to see what information I had about the attacks. I watched the television reports for a while, then left to attend a meeting of another Kiwanis Club in the area. Following that meeting, I went to a local hospital (Doctors' Regional)to donate blood. I stood in line five and one half hours to do so. Of course, we did not know that the people in New York were mostly dead and there would not be thousands of wounded in need of our blood. But, we did not know what else to do or how else to help. I was still in line when the time came for me to attend class at the local community college, but I stayed in line. Luckily for me, a television news reporter was interviewing people in line to give blood, and my college instructor saw me being interviewed, so I was excused for my absence that evening! (Actually, class was cut short anyway that night because everyone wanted to be at home with their families.) I found a new job on October 1 - I took it as a favor to a friend, just to "help out" but it has turned out to be a wonderful place for me to be. This year, on September 10, 2002, I again attended the FBHS Key Club meeting. I talked about how last year, we all rushed out to try to help out - to try to make a difference in the lives of people we didn't even know. Well, Kiwanis and Key Club are dedicated to community service, so if anyone wants to do their part to make the world a safer, happier, place, then Key Club is a good start. This year, we have twice the number of students joining the club. I think the experiences of the past year have shown us all that we have something to give back and an obligation to give it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember waking up, and turning the tv on, I saw these horrible images on the screen. My immediate thought was, "I wonder what country this is?" I never for a moment thought that it could be here. I was watching all the kaos unfold, and I kept looking at the bottom of the screen to see where it was happening, but they never flashed anything. I finally called my father and asked him what was going on, where was this happening? He said, "here!" I was in shock, i couldn't believe it. At the time of 9/11, I was 9 months pregnant, and I remember looking down at my stomach and saying, "what kind of world is my baby coming into?" The thought of her being born into that kind of hatred and destruction scared me. I am not naive, I know there is hate in the world, but you never quite imagine it to be that destructive until it's in your own back yard. My prayers go out to all who lost their lives on that day, and to the families and friends who have the courage to live each day, with the knowlegde that they are a part of history. We got up ate breakfast and left out without ever turning on a TV or radio. We toured the Gulfarium and had a sparkling adventure with our 9 year old son, who had never seen live ocean animal shows. At the end of the tour, we exited the park into their souviner shop. As we were enjoying shopping around, we kept hearing over their radio system reporters talking in strained voices. My husband told me, "Lisa something bad has to have happened". I walked over to the check out counter and asked a clerk, "has something unusual happened to be covered so heavily on the radio station"? She looked at me as if I were from mars! She said, "lady don't you know the world trade center is gone! It's been hit by 2 planes! The pentagon has been hit too!" I felt my blood run cold in my veins. How could this have happened?!?! Our little family gathered our belongings and headed back to our beach condo in Gulf Shores. My husband and I were devistated. We held our son and viewed on TV the horrifing coverage. The ground vibrated from the explosion and I immediately walked outside to see Tower One in flames. All I could think of was the loss of life that just occurred. I felt sick and angry as I witnessed the second plane hit and the horrible fact that this was not an accident. I called my employees outside to witness this event and to remember for future generations. Many years ago I had the privilege to visit both towers before it was opened to the public and remembered its construction. My worst fear became reality when the collapses occurred. In the middle of morning appointments, a client came in and told us a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. I was saying, "Yeah right!", until he said to turn on a TV or radio. As we were listening, all I could of were my two boys in North East Middle School, North East, MD. When we finally realized we also had a TV and turned it on, the second plane was flying into the other tower. Disbelief turned to shock and great sorrow. I went home at lunch time and called my parents and my mother-in-law in Indiana just to let them know we were all right. My mother was so worried about us being closer to all the tragedy. That night I felt great pride in my country when I went out to buy an American Flag, and everyone was sold out. All I could find were some small ones on a clearance table, but I knew they would do just fine. As we have approached the year anniversary of the 9/11 tradedies, we as americans need to realize the price we pay for our Freedoms. Tell us your story: Its 1:00 AM Sept 11, 2003.I know its two years later, but I figured that this is as good a forum as any to share this tidbit of info. I was on the last PATH train from Jersey City into the WTC on Sept 11, 2001. I arrived in WTC between the planes. As we came out there was a burning smell. I was going up the big escalator that takes you to the lobby of the WTC, and noticed a man who was slowing everybody up. As I passed him I noticed that his leg seemed injured and his pants looked all torn up. When we got to the top, I saw a number of uniformed officers (looked like police men to me,)take him and escort him away. (i guess it was for medical attention). I assume that when the first plane hit it must have caused some electric fire or something down by the PATH and thats how this guy got injured. I'll never know I guess. When I came up I was told that I was to exit the building immediately. I did notice that the stores seemed empty. As I came outside (Right opposite Deutsh Bank (Spellcheck), I saw all sorts of stuff on the ground . like when you go near a house after a fire. there were envelopes , pictures, bills, statements, etc. I asked a building guard what happened and he told me " there is a fire on the top floor". I was wondering weather I should hang around and see whats going on, but decided to continue on to my office. . I passed the fruit stand where I occasionally buy produce, but it was unattended buy the midle eatern vendor who was usually there. If I am not mistaken, the stand was also about half a block away from where it usually was. I contiued on and was cutting under 2 Rector place (thats a corner building where you go from Greenwich to Rector, when I heard a big BOOM. (The second plane hitting the WTC). Everybody started running so I ran too. As I passed by Syms (clothing store) I made a stupid joke to someone else running next to me. At the time I still had no idea what had happened, although in hindsite, my joke was in extremely poor taste. About a block later on the corner of my office building, I turned around and saw what everone was looking at. The WTC burning. Someone said that a plane fl;ew into it, I didnt believe it, until they said that they saw it with their own eyes. What really bothers me is, that at first, when the guard told me there was a fire on the top, i didnt realize the tragic ramifications that would have , even a regular fire up there would be devastating and deadly. Later as I watched the fire spread from one window to another (Like watching lights go on in an apartment building from across the way) I realized that there are people dying there. I saw the first tower fall and then was busy helping out in my building (we couldnt go out as the clouds of debris and smoke made that impossible for some time.) so i just heard the second tower fall but didnt see it. Remember 9/11 and all the innocent people who died , because a few wacko Islamic extremists wanted to prove a point. Lets not make the same mistake again, and be more vigilant. The second plane crashed minutes later as I had left my desk to run an errand. When I returned, my co-workers informed me of the second plane. I proceed to telephone a relative in New York City and spoke with her home attendant. While talking with her on the telephone, she onformed me that a plane had just crashed into the Pentagon. Tell us your story: My husband woke me up and told me to turn on the tv, I saw the WTC burning and the newscaster said that a plane had hit the WTC. Then as we were watching another plane came into view I looked at my husband and said "that is a passenger plane Suddenly they broke in and said that a plane had hit the Pentagon, I grabbed the phone and called my daughter who lives less than a mile from the Pentagon. I finally got through and asked her if they were ok she told me that she didnt know where her husband was then I heard a loud banging at her door-they were evacuating the building. I had to leave for work but as I stood there watching the tv I saw the first tower collapse. There were so many emotions going through me-fear,anger,sadness a loss that cannot be explained. I work at a small airport and when I got there things were crazy, we had planes all over the place, most were bigger than we usually handle. People were stranded with nowhere to go. My wonderful Mom owns the restaurant at the airport it is called MARYS PLANE VIEW she fed all of the stranded passengers and help to make sure everybody had a place to go.My daughter finally called and told me how terrible things were in D.C. She was very upset and worried so I asked her to come home for a few days since her husband was on duty at the Pentagon. I was in my office on Sept 11, when my secretary heard about a plane crashing into the WTC. We all stood around her little radio, transfixed not knowing what was about to happen. All of a sudden a second plane hit and then we knew that this was not an accident. Within that first hour, parents began streaming into the school office to pick up their children, parents who had spouses working in the WTC, relatives who came to get the kids whose parents were working in the WTC, and also parents who just wanted to have their children close to them. I began to run around the school, picking up the children for their parents. We had some children who were trying to reach their parent who was working in the WTC. They were panicked, and unable to reach anyone. It was frightening..... we knew history was in the making, we felt helpless. When school ended that day, I went down to the water and looking across the Hudson, and saw the huge hole in the skyline and the smoke pouring out of the hole. My heart was broken, and is still aching for what we suffered. We will never forget. And yes, three children in our school lost their father. My dad was pounding on my door to get up because I had forgotten to set my alarm the night before. So I woke up quickly got dressed and went to school. In previous days my school was in the headlines because qwe had the earliest lunch (9:30 am) in the country. We had had camaramen in our lunch all the time. My friend Alex walked up to our table and told us that the Wtc had been hit by an airplane. My friends and I thought he was joking and proceeded to make jokes about it. At that point the bell rang and I went to my english class. We had a sub that day and I quickly turned on the tv just to make sure he was really joking. The first image I saw was a rerun of the second plane smashing into the tower. Needless to asy I joked no more. For the rest of the day we proceeded through the classes but no work was happening. My math test was canceled. In band we didn't do anything but watch the tv. I'm a trombone player in the high school marching band. That friday night we had a football game. All the way there and back we saw hundreds of people outside for the candlelight vigil. It was amazing! during halftime we played some patriotic music. During it I had the melody to God Bless America. For once the crowd didn't just talk over the band and go eat. They actually listened. I even saw some people crying! It's amazing how this united people in a way That I didn't think was possible. This event has truly changed my life. It revealed to me the good in people. All of the people rushing in to the towers knowing that they probly wouldn't leave. That is the true definition of a hero. Thank you for the oppurtunity to share this. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Our home was disassembled; we were having our floors sanded and polyurethaned. Our TV was disconnected in the garage. My sales rep. called me from Florida hey did you hear the news? A small plane hit the World Trade Center. No way I said. Then my contractor showed up and confirmed the news. It was a beautiful day, a day you knew you wouldnt see again until after a long winter. Not a cloud in the sky, clean air, perfect for short sleeves. I had to see for myself. I drove to the top of my hill, a hill I had been driving for 22 years, where I had clearly seen the twin towers that morning when I drove my son to school. Sure enough the smoke was rising from the WTC. Staining that crystal blue sky. I turned around and retuned home. Still in shock from what I had just witnessed. I did the only thing I knew I should. Went upstairs gathered my uniform, vest and weapon. We were sure to get the call. Packed the car tuned in the radio and went to work. We were all in shock and dying for information. With the Internet down at the office and telephone service weak. Our only solution was to make an antenna for a TV we had in the training room. We got a Spanish news station and one of the guys was translating. One of the guys I work with was at a sales meeting in San Francisco (a meeting I was supposed to attend traveling on flight 93); he called me for the scoop. I told him what I knew and he quickly decided to drive back. A drive that would take him nearly 50 hours. I got the call at 1030. The City Of Yonkers was closing its offices and activating its entire police force including the Auxiliary Police. I got my gear from the car and got dressed. We had to report to the 1st pct. for our assignments. The place was in lockdown, we were at war, and I had never seen so much blue nor such emotion. We were sent to patrol the train stations within the city limits. No radios could be spared so we exchanged Cell Numbers and hoped for the best. We used our private cars and tried to help as best as we could. We all wanted to be in the middle of things, help with the rescue, but we did what was needed to help our fellow Americans. I just hope that seeing a uniformed officer waiting at the station was a comfort to the commuters trekking home from NYC that night. I like to think that it was our day to serve, a day we trained for our whole lives. We had 100% turnout that day. Listening to the news added to the tension. I was so happy to be home that night. But the streets of Yonkers were eerily silent. I think we were all inside watching CNN and waiting for more bad news. Two weeks later I was back on a plane to Atlanta, two middle-easterners seated in front of me. I looked at the guy next to me and we gave the nod to each other, saying we could do whatever had to be done. Needless to say they didnt move the entire flight. I always felt bad about that; it was pretty unfair to stereotype them like that. But that was the feeling in NY after that day. Working in Atlanta I felt like they were so disconnected from the events and emotions of NYC. This feeling carried across the country wherever I went. Looking back I know it was me, feeling sorry that I couldnt have done more. I moved my family to Florida 6 months later, I travel to NY every 6 weeks and I still cant get used to the changed skyline as you drive from Newark airport. I was leaving the supermarket the other day and there was a Veteran selling poppies, he had a bunch of pins on his vest from his travels and from different Veteran activities. I bought a poppy for my son and we walked to the car. I had a NYPD 911 flag pin in the glove box, so I walked back and offered it to him. He was surprised and gladly accepted it and proudly added it to his collection, I could see a tear forming in his eye. I cry whenever I see the images of that day. You see I had a beautifull baby girl on September 11, 1986, so that day had already had a special place in my heart, but now it will hold another meaning, one that reminds me how fragile life is and blessed we are for each and every day we have. You see, 9/11 was the day we feared before it ever got here. It was the day our 9-month-old son, Colin Clouse, was scheduled for reconstructive open-heart surgery to correct a rare combination of Pentalogy of Fallot with pulmonary artresia and a common AV valve. There was no guarantee that when we handed him to the doctors at 8:30 EST that we would ever see him alive again. While the rest of world was in their routine, ours was as rare of a day as we will ever experience. 15 minutes after we handed him to the doctors, the first plane hit the WTC. For the next 6 hours, while our son lay on an operating table on a heart-lung machine and a wonderful surgeon performing an incredible feat, we watched in horror as thousands of people lost their lives and their family's lives changed forever. When it was all over, thousands who had started the day in routine fashion had their lives suddenly taken from them in a most horrible way. But for us, the son we did not expect to see again was handed back to us with a full repair and a chance to live a normal life. We do not understand why so many innocent people lost their lives that day and why Colin was spared. We can only pray for the victims and hope that they were as prepared to meet God as we were to send our son to Him. As always, I was running a little behind and became annoyed when the telephone rang knowing it would be my mother asking some trivial question. As soon as I answer the phone, my mom tells me to turn on the TV to a local news station and that a building in New York was just attacked. Grapping the remote and watching the scene unfold before my eyes, I stood stunned unable to believe my eyes thinking this could not be happening. My mom and I stayed on the phone together listening to the deathly silence on the other end of the line with an occasional gasp of disbelief. Then when the second plane plowed into the next building, I thought I would stop breathing as I imagined hundreds of people dying instantly. My heart ached and tears flowed as I tried to imagine who would want to do this unbelievable act. After finally whispering a goodbye to my mom and telling her I loved her, I hung up the phone and finished getting myself and my son ready for school. When I finally got to my class, the TV was on CNN and they had just announced that the first World Trade Tower had collapsed. It was a nightmare watching people run and hearing the screams of the residents as the world around them came falling down all around. Tears streamed down my face as I watched the second tower come down and I asked myself again why and who would do this. I think the day after was more tramatic for me as I listened to the death tally and I stayed home that day with my son unable to let him out of my sight. I still have a hard time looking at the pictures and wonder if the fear will ever leave me. In the morning I danced around to "I am the Walrus" by the Beatles to get me psyched up for play auditions I had after school. My first hour class, American Lit, was the usual. I think we took notes on Christopher Columbus. I didn't find out about the terrorist attacks until the end of second hour. I was sitting in math, writing poems and drawing a picture of Paul McCartney- I was really bored as the material we were learning was very easy- when another teacher came into the room and asked to speak to Mr. Saros. They went out in the hall for a minute and he came back and turned on the TV to CNN. I didn't really understand what had happened at first, although I did write in my notebook "Holy fuck the World Trade Center was attacked!" It didn't seem like a big deal at the time... The towers seemed pretty stable. I began to panic more as I talked to my friends, and some of them were talking about how the Empire State Building and the White House were destryoed, too. As the day progressed, I began to realize more and more what was going on. It was impossible to escape from it. In all my other classes, we did nothing but watch the TV, except for Chemistry, in which we had to take a test first. I thought I failed the test because I couldn't concentrate on it. People's opinions on it really screwed me up. A girl in my government class was convinced that nuclear weapons would have to be used to resolve this issue, and that got me worried as hell. I called my mother during lunch, just for like support or comfort I guess, and instantly started crying. It was pretty embarassing. I decided to go to play auditions a different day and went home. My brother and step-mother didn't really help me calm my fears; in fact I think they intensified them. I started writing in my diary and looked down at my doggie who sat beside me, and kept thinking how terribly strange it was that she had no idea what was going on. My fear of war, and instantaneous patriotism for the attacks on 9-11 only lasted a couple of weeks. Instead of focusing on how this had hurt our nation, I began to take a like more worldly view on things. Not to be disrespectful, but I really don't think this is that big of a deal. It's disgusting that we let the Tali-ban rule Afghanistan in the first place, and didn't do anything to stop it until they hurt us. Besides, thousands- actually probably a million or more- innocent people from all over the world die needlessly everyday, so in the big scope of things, this was just a tragedy within a catastrophe. The thirteenth of September, 2001, a gruop of City of Miami Police officers recieved permission to go an aid the New York Police Department in New York City. They drove straight thru for twenty four hours to New York and reported to the command center and where sent to Precinct 6. There they filled in with miscellaneous police duties as to free up NYPD personnel to look for their dead and to go home and rest and return to duty rested. Miami police retire Frank Arostegui donated an American flag and had all the retiree's at this year convention sign it. This was on the 6th, 7th, and 8th of September 2002. On the ninth he and his wife flew to New York City and on the tenth of September, he presented the flag to Lt. Cunningham of the 6th Precinct in Manhattan. The message sent alone is that the law enforcement is the first line fo defence here at home, however do not forget the second line is us retiree's !!! As I was in the waiting area I heard on the radio that a plane had hit one of the Twin Towers. I thought to myself, "What idiot pilot couldn't see the tower?" Minutes later I heard the news about the second plane and by then there was live air shots on the television above my head. I remember the news casters voices, trying ever so hard to stay composed. The rest of the news cast was a blur to me because by the time my car was finished, I had a pit in the bottom of my stomach. I drove all the way home paying close attention to other drives faces and reactions, as I was sure they were hearing the same news that I was. I spent the next 7 hours in front of the television set crying uncontrollably. I felt sick. I honestly couldn't believe that I had just seen that happen. My children were at school that day and I was wondering if they would know anything was wrong. Apparently the school had a little assembly because as hard as the teachers tried to not show concern or sadness, it was apparent to lots of the children that there was something wrong. I spent an hour after they were home wondering what I was suppose to say to them since I couldn't even understand or explain it to myself. When I finally sat down with them, my heart just sank. I thought, "Look at what I have been forced to do." I will forever remember the first day that my youngest son, age 7, heard the plane overhead after the attack. He crouched down, shielded his hands over his head and cried, "No, not us. Please don't hurt us." Then the following day my oldest son, aged 9, came home and was very proud to tell me that his school had decided to join in to collect money for the Afganistan children. I thought to myself, "through tradegy, this child has learned compassion and empathy" - at age 9. I will never forget listening, seeing and hearing all of the reports, broadcasts and interviews about the attack and knowing that I had a newfound respect for America and I was proud to be on this soil. Tell us your story: On my last day of vacation, I was preparing to regroup after my morning ritual, taking my son to school and planning the remainder of my day, then the most unforgettable sight occurred before my eyes. With notepad in hand, sitting in front of the TV, I watched what I thought were the last minutes of the Early Show with Bryant Gumbel. Suddenly, I noticed Bryant appear startled and announced that there was breaking news. The next thing I saw was the smoke, fire and the bulletin. As they began to recant what had occurred, video showed another plane heading toward a building. The reports began coming in sporadic and everyone was repeating the information over again. My initial thought was that a pilot trainee had possibly gone off course and this was just a tragic accident. As the morning unfolded, we knew this was not the case. The worst fear developed in my stomach as it did when I heard the news about President Kennedy and Dr. King. Is this really happening? But a worse fear surfaced as I wondered if we were under attack. It has been one year, and somehow as we recant the stories of the heroes, survivors and the victims, I still wonder, how did this happen? No amount of words can ever describe the emotions that must envelope us all as we relive this horrible tragedy and try to offer solace to our nation. 'One Nation Under God' is the only way we will be able to recover from this travesty and try to move ahead. Hopefully we can embrace these words and live as such.
