I made it home to Atlanta from Manhattan late last night. Several have asked for my story. I realize it is one of so many, and long, but I will share it as a record of my experience. I flew up to NYC Monday night, for a 1 day visit with my customer at the World Trade Center tower 2. I had done work for them on a regular basis for the last year. I was to work with them on Tuesday, 9/11. I usually start work at 8:30am, but knowing my customers, they wouldnt show up in the lab until around 9, so I lingered over the newspaper a few more minutes. I took the subway to the world trade Center because I was staying at the Times Square Marriott. Usually I stay at the World Trade Center Marriott when there because it is next door, but decided I wanted to be near the theatre district in hopes of catching a show on Tuesday nite before leaving Wed morning. When I got off the subway Tuesday morning and walked to the WTC mall, people started hesitating and turning around. I went through the turnstiles to go into the WTC and heard people directing us to leave. "Don't run" they cautioned. I assumed there was a gunman or a bomber. I quickly walked back to the subway and up the stairs to daylight. Everyone was looking up and I saw there was a huge hole in one of the towers. I was in shock, trying to figure out which tower it was, and what had happened. Someone said a plane had crashed into the building. Debris was falling off the building and a huge cloud of smoke was billowing out of the tower. Someone described people jumping, and I looked away, not wanting to see. People just stood there looking up, and I just wanted to walk away. There was falling debris and I just wanted out of there. Then I heard a boom and looked up and there was a fireball headed for us. I ducked and crouched in the corner, then jumped around the corner of a building. Something flew overhead and smelled like famaldahide. I imagine it was jet fuel. It struck somewhere a block or 2 away. I asked someone, "What was that?". They said it was "the other plane." At that point I was totally puzzled, thinking it was an accident and that two planes had almost collided and instead crashed into the towers. I walked East for a few blocks, then decided to walk, carrying my laptop, back to the hotel. I heard people directing us to keep walking. My cell phone had by this time 5 messages on it, but I couldnt get through to call any of my family to let them know I was ok. I stopped at the Canal street station, paid my fare, and waited a few minutes. I rested a minute, but it was very hot there, and I decided there wouldnt be any trains coming from the WTC. I kept walking, this time to Chambers street, and heard a train running, so I ran down. I caught the next train to my hotel. On the train, I heard people talking, and one said it was a terrorist attack. I got to my hotel room and couldnt get through on either the hotel phone or my cell phone. The tv stations were all out. The hotel room had a high speed internet connection, and I connected my laptop, saw an email from my mom and some friends, and emailed them back to know I was ok. I finally got through on my cell phone to my mother and let her know I was ok, then walked across the street to McDonalds for some breakfast. When I got back, my family and friends and I created a chat room and shared our experience. I told them what I had seen and heard how scared they were for me. It was comforting for me to know that we were all connected at that moment. We even did an online hug. I saw on the news the buildings had crumbled, and heard from my family that the Pentagon had been hit. Like everyone else, I wondered if the world was coming to an end. There was noone around. I emailed work to let them know I was ok and asked if we were at war. I spent the next two days in Manhattan, which was the strangest I have ever seen it. Just seeing people was comforting. I thought about volunteering or giving blood but did neither. I talked to the maid about what had happened. There were very few people in times square, so I walked to Chelsea every afternoon. Tuesday only some of the restaurants were open I smelled the smoke, saw the zombie look on peoples faces. I imagine I was still in shock most of the day Tuesday and part of Wed. Wed I was able to have dinner outside in Chelsea, there were signs up urging people to be outside at 7 to show we are unafraid. At dark, people started lighting candles, and I stood next to a group of them for a few mintes, needing so desperately to feel the "light" through the pain of what had happened. I kept hearing in my head what a friend had written me after the attack: "See the light! See it in people's faces!" I was beginning to feel that life might actually return to "normal". I chatted with people on the internet and watched the news on TV. I spoke with friends and family on the phone. Manhattan island had been cut off, and it wasnt until Thursday that I really considered trying to get home. By Thursday there were signs NYC and times square were starting to wake up. I stood in line on Thursday and met 4 women buying tickets for The Full Monty. They had been in NYC a week on vacation, and shared with me the shows they had seen. I smiled for the first time since Tuesday morning. I ate dinner at a restaurant where my sister had eaten often while living in Manhattan. I went to the show and was sitting next to the women I had met in Times Square. An announcer before the show said the mayor had asked New Yorkers to get back to work to show the terrorists that life still goes on. They would not defeat us. He said the cast was grateful we were there because the work they do is entertain, and you need an audience for that. And they did do that, making us laugh for 2 hours in the midst of the pain and shock of the attacks. Some flights had started late Thursday, but by Thursday nite the NY airports were all closed again. I made arrangements to rent a car at La Guardia for Friday morning, and I took a cab there, rented the car, and drove to Philadelphia where I hoped to catch a plane to Atlanta. I called Delta and my travel agent from my cell phone and found that Delta had refused my reservation from Philly to Atlanta, so I drove the 16 hours all the way to Atlanta. I got in late last nite. Having been in NYC the last several days, I hadnt fully realized the impact the attacks had on the entire country. On the drive home, I heard the radio in small cities, and saw American flags on many bridges. I will spend this afternoon and evening with some of my family and hope to spend tomorrow with some of my friends. I know that all our lives were changed this week, and I hope this experience brings us closer together. I am still looking over my shoulder, and I imagine we all will for some time. I see the outpouring of love and sympathy for those who experienced such great loss as a result of these attacks. I hear the stories of the brave fire fighters who gave their lives saving others, the stories of the terrorists, the stories of those who lost their lives, and of those still looking for their loved ones. I hear the stories of looting, of telemarketing scams, bomb scares and fake internet sites. And I hear about everyone lighting candles. I have begun lighting my own candles again at home, and for that I am very grateful. I pray for strength, protection, love and understanding. For myself and for everyone. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was on the freeway driving to work at 6:30 a.m. as a high school drama teacher. I was in a really good mood because I was just starting my 33rd year of teaching and I knew it would be my last because I had already announced my retirement. When the news of the first plane hitting the tower was announced on the radio I went into shock. For the past 25 years I had joyfully taken my advanced drama students to Manhatten for a week over Christmas to experience live theatre. How many times had we all layed on the cold cement and looked up between the towers to take amazing pictures. Even though I had dozens of the same shot from previous trips, it will still just as exciting each time to share this moment with my students. I have still been unable to pull out those photographs and look at them. In fact, I doubt I will ever visit my beloved New York again. I will never forget the terror I felt as I pulled into school and ran to the nearest television. I thought it best for the students to keep things as normal as possible so I continued my planned lessons but snuck to a TV between periods. Later my students told me how thankful they were I kept some normalcy on that horrific day. I feel so much sympathy for all of those who lost loved ones. Tell us your story: That morning a co-worker and I were listening to Howard Stern's radio show when he mentioned that a plane had crashed into the Worldtrade Centre. We didn't know what to think, was it a joke or not? More information came thru, the building was now on fire. My co-worker tried to contact his girlfriend who works in the WTC, unfortunately the phone lines were not working, he tried his cell, he could only leave a message on her cell. Luckily she called to say that she hadn't got to work yet. I tried to call my boyfriend in Queens, to tell him to turn on the TV and see whats happening on the news, no reply. We looked out of our 21st floor office window, downtown and we could see the plumes of black smoke billowing up into the sky. What was going on! We gathered into the conference room and put the TV on. We couldn't believe what we were seeing and hearing, yet another plane had hit, was the United States under attack? There were gasps,shouts of horror, when we heard the towers had collapsed. There were reports that more planes had come down in Washington and there were other hijacked planed still in the air. We were told we could go home, the bridges and subways had been closed,a colleague said I could go home with her, I managed to get thru to my boyfriend, who had been trying to contact me, the phone lines were working intermittently and I told him were I was going. I am originally from the UK and have been in NY for nearly 2years & the strange thing was my family & friends in England, could get thru easier than I could to Queens. They had heard about the terrible news and were worried and couldn't believe what was going on. As we walked Uptown, it was surreal, we could smell the arid smoke, we didn't notice any vehicles, there seemed to be no sounds coming from others on the street,we could see people in bars crowded round the TV trying to make sense of what was going on..But who could! Watching the events unfold on TV, it was unbelievable,it looked like it was a scene from a movie. As soon as it was annouced that the subways were running again, I left, all I wanted to do was get home to Andy. From the 7 line as the train rounded Queens Brough you can usually get a magnificent view of the Manhatten skyline, there were 2 buildings missing that day. My heart goes out to all those familes & friends who have lost loved ones in the Worldtrade Centre,Washington and of all those innocent airline passengers. It was the first cool day since I had moved up north from North Carolina to attend Seminary in Bethlehem PA. I was sitting in Old Testament class when someone ran in telling us that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. It was as if time stood still. Our class happened to have been in a Digital Learning Classroom, so we should have been able to pull the news up on the big screen TV in the classroom. When we couldn't, the class quickly moved to a room that is often used for worship. Immediately upon entering the room, I saw the second plane hit the World Trade Center. Although I saw LIVE in the corner of the screen, it still didn't feel real. It was as if I was watching the Bruce Willie movie "Die Hard" or something. The room was perfectly still, no movement, no sound. Here I was, 9 hours from the only home I have ever known in a room full of strangers watching the worst pain...the most devistation destruction I have ever seen...in a room full of people I didn't even know. We sat together for hours as we saw what happened in DC and in PA. We cried together, prayed together and just sat together comforting one another. Prayer services followed...the college and seminary had several prayer services a day for weeks. They helped, but something was lost that day...I realize now that it was my innocence. I was 32 when the terriost chose to strike out against America. That day changed my life forever! That day, this community became my family. I still mourn for those whose lives were lost. My soul aches for because of the hatred I saw that day. And yet my soul is warmed by the love I saw our nation show eachother in the midst of this pain. My fiance called to tell me that he heard driving to working a plane crashed in the World trade center. I switched on the Tv briefly and they were just saying it was an accident. So I switched it back. I never knew at that time that the second tower had been hit. My neice called to tell me that a plane hit the Pentagon. My fiance works at the Pentagon! I was frantic. I tried his cell phone, called his office, called his sectrary and got no answer. I was sick. I turned on the TV and stayed glued to it for 9 hours until I heard from him. He was late leaving the house that morning. Thank god for the alarm not going off. He was a block from the Pentagon and later he told me he saw the plane as it went over. He heard the explosion. he said that sound would haunt him the rest of his life. He helped with the rescue and looked for survivors. Tell us your story: On September the 11th our principal made an announcement late in the school day at our Middle School saying that there was a plane crash in New York and nobody from our town was hurt. I don't know why. When we got home we realized what had happened, and we had no idea that it was this serious. We had no idea that it was this serious. After hearing the announcement we hadn't though it was serious at all. Even more disgracefully after all the high school sports were cancelled for the day, our 7th and 8th grade football team decided to practice because according to the coach "it was safe". With the addition of my two hours of homework that day, there was no point that I was not able to let the whole event sink in and think about it. The next day in school, we barely discussed it. Kids aren't stupid, they deserve to know whats going on inside and outside the classroom, and they should have the right to talk about they're feelings in a time like this. I didn't paticularly enjoy it, but the money was good. I tried to make the best of it by taking advantage of as many free computer training classes and government information sessions as I could at the Pentagon and Navy Annex both a few thousand yards from the building we worked in. One beautiful Tuesday morning I was dragging my feet. My mom and I took separate cars because I had a class at Mason right after work. I kept finding little things to distract me. The weather was so perfect that I seriously considered ditching work and hanging out by the river all day. I remember I was really intent on writing down the lyrics to this song I had just thought up. I parked in the garage under the building - even though it was more expensive - because it was already 8:45 and I had to get my butt to the office. As I snuck into my cubicle and logged on to my computer, hoping nobody noticed how late I was, I heard one of the gruff retired military guys jokingly ask a buddy if he had seen any low flying planes outside. Since Reagan National is practically across the street, I thought nothing of it. A reminder popped up on my computer screen... Information Session - Pentagon 9:00. Aw Crap! I said out loud. It's like 9 now. I'll never make it. Man... I'm gonna be in deep shit for missing this one. Why the hell was I so late? I don't even know what I was doing. Whatever, life goes on... I was thinking to myself and I began preparing for a meeting with the Colonel later that morning. The crazy temp who is always sending those chainletter type emails around came in and sat down rambling something about the end of the world and the plane crashes and some other stuff. I kind of blew her off. Then I went over to my mom's office to say hi and see what was up with all the talk about airplanes. She had just heard about it herself. We all gathered at the receptionists desk with the usual joking and gabbing and not realising the gravity of what was taking place right above our heads. We heard the big screen TV in the conference room on the 12th floor was tuned to CNN so about a dozen of my coworkers, including my mom, went up to check out the news - anything to get out of work, right? I stayed behind to prepare for my meeting... I didn't want to leave because I knew the Colonel would be in any minute, he was a very busy man, and if I wasn't there when he showed up I would be in trouble. One of the guys had a radio in his office so I stayed and listened. That's when I heard about the second plane. Terrorists we all agreed. None of us had seen pictures yet, we were picturing in our minds little prop planes like the one that tried to crash into the white house a few years ago. We started taking bets on what terrorist group was responsible. Bin Laden was the most popular vote. One of the retired military girls said, "It makes me wish I was still on active duty so I could go over there and kick some ass" Just then Angela, the receptionist, came running in. She told me I had to go watch the TV. I had to see. It's unbelievable. I argued that I had to wait for the Colonel. She said she'd cover for me, but I couldn't miss seeing what she had seen. So I got on the elevator with another woman from the office. We rode up the two floors chattering with curiosity - what's everyone making a fuss about? As we got off the elevator we ran into the Captain. He asked where we were going. We told him and he said everyone's gone home - the pentagon's on fire. I giggled said, "don't even joke about that." And as I pushed past him he said, "go look out a window" I skipped down the hallway to the conference room. It was eerily quiet except for the CNN reporter's voice. The conference room was deserted. The 8 foot screen was gray... no it was smoke. This is so much bigger than I ever imagined, I thought. Then the word Pentagon was at the bottom of the screen. I screamed... It can't be true... It can't be. I yelled, "Is anybody here?... Anybody?!?!" Oh God, where's my mom? I thought she was here! She must be looking for me! As I waited an eternity for the elevator I began to pace back and forth one of the men waiting with me said, "Don't panic, that's what they want us to do." There's a they out there that is trying to hurt us. Who are they? What will they do next? I couldn't breathe on the elevator... what if our building was next? The security guard was securing our floor when I got there and he didn't even know why. I found my mom, she said, "Get your stuff we're going home!" I said heck yeah we are! I grabbed my keys... but before I could leave, I hesitantly walked across the office to the window. What I saw sent a chill down my spine. It was so dark, so black... billowing for miles. This is the biggest thing that has ever happened to me. My mother and I got in our separate cars and I followed her home. As we were leaving Crystal City... less than 15 minutes after the Pentagon was hit, the sidewalks were swarming with people and men in black suits and black SUVs were everywhere, securing buildings and evacuating people. The traffic was so slow, but everyone was nice to eachother - no road rage on Sept. 11, 2001. I kept trying to call my dad to tell him we were OK but my cell wouldn't work. At every stoplight my mom and I would wave at eachother in support. Listening to the radio, I heard the newscaster say that the towers had fallen and the true gravity of the situation kicked in. As we turned the corner at Potomac Yards, I was once again facing north and the darkness filled my view. I started screaming and crying hysterically. So this is what evil looks like. I had to pull over. My mom did too and she got out of the car and walked back to check on me. I rolled down the window to tell her I was ok and the stench of burning flesh and fuel filled my nostrils. I cried out again. We were at least 5 miles from the crash site at this point, but we couldn't get away. As we continued on I finally got through to my dad. When he picked up I couldn't talk. I just kinda said, "Ummm..." I was so happy to have gotten through, but so scared that this might have been the last time I ever talked to him. I let him do the talking and he asked me where I was and if I was ok. He said he was glad I called because he was about to come down there and look for me. Then he told me to hang up the phone and concentrate on getting home safely. It took an hour or so, but we eventually did. I don't think I've ever been so happy to see my house. My mom and I just hugged eachother in the driveway for a few minutes. There were about 10 messages on the answering machine already. People checking on us. I called everyone who knew where I worked. There was a lot of crying. I live less than a mile from a major army base, and they had vigilant fly overs every 10 minutes or so. I didn't sleep for 3 days. I watched the replays on CNN and it made me naseous. These are people dying. My cousin was supposed to be on one of the planes that hit in NYC, but changed her flight plans at the last minute. I got in my car and left toward brooklyn. I was running a little late for class and made it on the Verazanno bridge around 9:00am. I was driving on the bridge and just happened to look left when I saw the most shocking scene I ever saw in my life! Tower 1 was on fire! I slowed down on the bridge to be sure I wouldnt hit anyone in front of me and watched the scene. I saw what appeared to be a helicopter fly out from the city It was going at a decent speed so i was concentrated on it. It flew over Staten Island (where I just came from) and made a U-Turn. I watched it gain speed as it got closer to the city. I was sure it was a rescue chopper. My eyes followed it all the way to the big impact. I was in such a shock at what I had witnessed. I have just seen a pilot and a navigator die before my eyes. I had no radio in the car to listen to what was going on so I drove on to school. I even went to the class I was late for and sat silently. When class ended, I told the teacher what I saw. When I stepped out of the building, The entire campus was filled with people. I had learned it was a terrorist attack. And when I heard that there were passengers on the airplane... I felt a sickening feeling in my stomach. Amazingly, no one at Kingsborough lost any family members or loved ones, but the tears that shed that day on campus was enough to fill a liter. I opened the front door of my apt. & my neighbor was sitting out side; her husband was in the military right down the road.,he was called in! When I talked to freinds ,in the Woodbridge area,the newspaper had after the this horrible thing- showed the pictures of area people that were lost-& killed, there were 35! ones I talked to at the bus stop-all of us complaing about the bus being late- standing out in the cold- little did we KNOW!!!THAT we would never see each other again- not because of a move due to advancement that you leave the area etc-BUT because of a SICK person or persons that feel the way they do!!! Michael is her son who was scheduled to install a computer system at a business near the WTC in New York. The terror in her voice is still as clear as a bell. During the time that we were trying to help our friend and co-worker place calls to find Michael, we heard about the second plane crash. Then we heard about the plane hitting the Pentegon. Tina and I exercised a state of numb calm making phone calls and relaying the updates from the internet news to the other office staff workers. The phone rang and Alma again screamed "Michael!" but we heard the relief in her voice that signaled Mike was ok. He was on the last train leaving Penn Station and would be home soon. I remember how all of the women in the office were anxiously wanting to hold their children. I remember going outside around 3:00 PM and there were no planes, trains, trucks, cars or other urban sounds. The birds were silent as if they knew... When I got home that afternoon, I was on a mission to hang my American flag outside my home and then I turned on the news and watched, for the first time, the video record of the days events and I cried. I can close my eyes today and vividly recall the television screen showing people falling from the WTC towers. I can't imagine the horror those at the crash sites saw and felt that day. I called my sister and I was dreading nightfall and being alone. I remember now that I survived being alone that day and so afraid that more harm would come. I desperately wanted to be held in someone's arms to feel safe. I believe that is when I truly found bravery and my courage to go on in life. And then I got angry that people on the other side of the Earth would hate me so much that they could take this day in my life away and try to fill me with so much fear. Nothing so far had gone wrong. I went to Global Studies with Mrs. Capen and I sat down. We started class as usual and the she got a phone call. When she hung up the phone she was in shock. She rushed over to the television and turned it CNN on and I thought it was another of those boring movies about "if this happened" or just a weird kind of stunt thing. It wasn't. The attack on America was real happening right now. I couldn't believe my eyes. When the second plane hit the towers I was in Global Studies with my teacher Mrs.Capen. All of my friends were completely in shock, and so was I. It was a very sad for New York City and our country. At 8:48 A.M American Fight 11 hit the first tower. Then at 9:03 A.M Fight 175 hit the second tower. Our class watched the second plane hit the second tower live. The two World Trade Centers were hit and burning in the sky. There was smoke and people running around no one knew what to do. Then at 9:48 A.M Flight 77 dove right in to the Pentagon in Washington D.C. I remember seeing the Pentagon probably about five months ago on a family trip. Then another important news flash came on at 10:10 A.M United Airline Flight 93 was also hijacked and crashed in a field in Somerset, Pennsylvania. Shortly afterward the South Tower collapsed. While I watched the tower go down, I felt very sad because of all those people who were probably stuck in the towers and could not get safely out like some others. After a couple minutes went by the North Tower collapsed and the same thing went through my mind. I was in school all day while this was happening. I was also kind of scared because we have a power plant right next to our community called A.E.S. The power plant was having a type of lock down, where they have policemen all over the place and no one was allowed to leave the plant for 24-hours unless it was an emergency. Many people think of this attack as a live "Pearl Harbor 2," because it was a surprise attack that killed many, many people. Except this time we were not listening to the attack on radio, we were watching the whole thing LIVE on television. I couldn't believe my eyes this actually happened, and it may happen again in the near future (which I hope not!). What happened on September 11, 2002 will change my life forever. I hope that when kids hear about the attack they will not think of it as a stupid event that happened. They should actually try to understand what happened and how every one felt. It is going to be a new part of our history for future generations to learn about, but I had to go through it first hand. When I was half awake and still in bed, I over heard my clock radio alarm. My mind didn't register what happened. I didn't know about what had happen until 10 o'clock (central timezone) that morning. When my aunt called, she sounded worried. I got a little confused and asked what was wrong. She didn't answer my question at first. She wanted to know where Dad was. I said that he just flew to Denver the day before on 9/10/01. At this point, I still didn't know what was going on. I asked her what happened. She told me to turn on the TV, and I did. I was glued to the TV for the rest of the day. I had a doctor's appointment that day, but I was too scared to go out. I cancelled it. At first, I didn't really feel anything when 9/11. I was stoic. I went about my business as if nothing had happened. Now, I am feeling the pain of that day. I was 18 when 9/11 happened. Now I am 22. I have numerous magazines, books, bookmarked websites and a fictional movie based on 9/11. I have the 9/11 Commission Report. I am going through these things, and I am just now coming to grips with 9/11. I would call it delayed shock, but I don't know if that's the correct term. I don't know any of the victims personally, but I am still mourning for one of the victims that was on United Airlines Flight 175 when it slammed into the South Tower. His surname was the same as mine. His name was W. Menzel. He was from Germany. My family origins are from Germany. I am German, but I was born in America. Even though I have never been to Germany, I am still very proud to be a German. If though I don't know this man, I still consider him family. It took me several years to find out W. Menzel was on one of the planes. When I saw his name, I felt very sad. My belief is that if people have the same last name but they don't know the other person, they are still somehow related. They are just from another branch of the same family name. I didn't know this man, but it is very likely that we are somehow related even though it might be very distant. I still mourn his loss and I feel very sad for his family. This man, I feel, indirectly connects me to 9/11. May all the victims of 9/11 rest in peace. May the victims' families find comfort from their loss. May God forgive the people who caused all this pain and loss. God bless America and the world. Thank you. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at home talking to a friend on the phone who told me about the first tower being hit by a plane. At that time we both thought it was an accident. So I went upstairs to see what was happening on the TV. By then the second crash had occurred. Shortly after that, the two people who clean our house came in saying they had seen the plane crash. I assumed they meant they had seen on TV one of the crashes on the Twin Towers. I was horrified to learn they were talking about the Pentagon. They actually saw the plane descend and hit the building. They are the only people we know who saw the Pentagon crash. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On THAT day, I was only a short distance from the WTC . I recall the day as unusually warm for September..and not a cloud in the sky..which was an almost surrealistic shimmering blue. After finally getting home..I wrote in my journal the next day, all that had happened. Here is the entry from 9/12/01 which is how I preceived it at the time. Later I took pics and continued to write. And today..I wrote it again..in synch with the times that will be remembered forever by many..I will NOT write that here...but only the initial recollection the day following... Wednesday, September 12, 2001 8:59:42 AM I didn't write yesterday because of the great tragedy that has befallen my country. I am having a hard time even writing it down..but I know I must. I just can't seem to get away from the emotions that are a result of all that has happened. I am having a very hard time praying..tho I know that ultimately, that is what I need to do. First of all, my WTC story... I caught the ferry at my usual time of 8:30 a.m. The ride from Port Liberte to the foot of Wall St. took just about 10 minutes. I remember looking at my watch because I've been trying to improve my walking time. As I was approaching Hanover Sq. Park ..about 8:45..a shower of debris began falling from the sky. I was sure it was a fire somewhere..but didn't even consider that it was what it was. The ash kept falling for the remainder of my walk to my office. Made it in record time! My hair was gritty with the fallen ash..and my white blouse covered at the shoulders. I took the elevator to my floor(10) and Kerene, our receptionist was on the phone. I let her know that something was going on, still thinking that there was a major fire somewhere. I booted up my machine, and dialed Scott (my husband..a post production editor for CBS News). As I was talking to him, there was an explosion..the time..now infamous was 9:03 a.m. I told him that our building was rocked.. "Yes..I can see it" he said. At that moment fear overwhelmed me. I yelled at Kerene that I thought it was time to get out. Told Scott that I was getting out..and hung up. I was never able to talk to Scott again until I got home 2+ hours later. Back at the office, I suggested that we go downstairs until we knew what was going on. Another co-worker, Larry was for waiting until we knew more. In the midst of the conversation the announcement came over the fire system "EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY". Kerene and I made our way to the fire escape and went down. Briefly checking on our fellows on the 6th Floor. I am most thankful that it was an easy 10 floors down. There was no panic..outwardly any way. I'm assuming that at the time, the majority of us didn't know exactly what had transpired. Having passed a TV, I had learned the the WTC was on fire..but didn't know how or why. Upon gathering in front of the building, fellow employees gathered with those that hadn't made it up to the office. It was there that I learned a bit more about what happened and asked if it was ok to leave. At the time, I was just thinking that I had to get home..and find out where my husband was, and if he was ok...and of course cell phones were useless. For a moment, I was drawn up Broadway toward the WTC..almost hypnotized. I think I was just following the crowd..or perhaps being pulled. We were free from work and wanted to see. The mass of people gravitating in that direction was amazing. A few seconds later, I made my way to the wall of a building and worked my way back down Exchange Place..the way I had come less than a 1/2 hour earlier. Going down Exchange Place/Alley to Broad Street, the debris was thick on the street and in the air. Smoke filled the sky above, that was only a short time ago, the bluest of late summer blue. I worked my way to Beaver Street and back toward Hanover Square Park..tears running down my face. I saw bodies! ..and bits and pieces of people and their lives. I don't know why now, and perhaps I'll never know, but I stopped and picked up some of the paper scattered in the park itself. I stuffed it in my purse and continued on down the street. Just as I was coming to the corner at Water Street, my cell rang. I was hoping it was my husband who I had abruptly hung up on. Instead it was my sister calling from NV. She wanted to know if I was ok...let her know I was on my way to the ferry and home..asked her to call everyone and let them know I was ok..and hugged and kissed. While waiting to cross Water St. I tried frantically to call Scott on the cell. Of course, it still didn't work. ..and even now I wonder how my sister got connected. Passing the building at 75 Water Street, there was a bank of public phones. I thought of stopping, but the 10 or so phones each had lines that were 5 deep with people..and there were some that were so anxious and scared that tempers were flaring. I continued down Old Slip toward South Street. Above me on the FDR I could hear the beginning of chaos. Before I reached reach Pier 11 (Wall St and South St) there is a fire station. on the west side of the street; Company 11 or 15..I can't remember. As I write this, on the third day, I wonder and hope and pray that I shall see them when it is time to return. There were always FDNY folks out there..washing the trucks or maintaining equipment. I don't recall what was going on at the time. I realize now that I was in shock. I reached the pier where my ferry departs. Pier 11 is a hub for a number of commuter ferries. When I arrived there was a mob. All I was truly concerned about was getting on my "normal" ferry back to Port Liberte and home. Very quickly NY Waterway ferries were arriving. The pier and landing barges were very crowded. Our NY DOT director was doing his very best to maintain a semblance of order. Unfortunately he was vastly outnumbered. Until that day regular ferry riders had referred to him as "the dock nazi". If you see him, let him know that I, for one, will NEVER refer to him that way again. I gingerly made my way down the (DOT forbidden) barge and was very near to where my boat would dock. This was at 10:30 ...nearly an hour after I had arrived at Pier 11. As a boat, hopefully mine, was pulling up, I could see down Wall St. There was a HUGE roiling dust brown, reddish cloud coming toward me!!! ..and the Pier. The barge started rocking and very quickly the great cloud was upon me. At about the same time, I could hear a jet that appeared to be flying overhead. Visibility was less than zero. Collectively, me and everyone around did a "duck and cover" I prayed like I'd never prayed before. I was certain that my time for heaven had come. Thankfully, that didn't happen. I later learned that our airspace was already safe. At the time, though, it was very frightening. Captain Mike of the Teddy Roosevelt announced what the cause of this great cloud was..one of the two towers had completely collapsed. At that moment, you could hear everyone praying...my God, my God, my God. I was back on NJ land about 11 a.m. The anxious faces of family members searching for loved ones confronted everyone as they left the boat. Cell phone service was out and our little peninsula seemed to me to be a microcosm of what was going on all over our country. As we dis-embarked from the boat..the shock was readily apparent. The fear and anxiety that we all felt..and still may feel, so much like news footage of wartime refugees. I got to my home a little after that. Thankfully, I live only a short walk from the dock. The phone was ringing. The first of many calls from my family. I quickly learned that I could receive calls but not call out. My son Eric was crying. All my family knows I work very near "ground zero"..as it has come to be called. For the next two hours I stayed by the phone. My husband was eventually able to get through. I later learned that he feared I'd been lost in the tower collapse. I immediately logged on to keep in touch with co-workers, email my client and learn all I could of friends that worked in and around WTC. Thankfully, my cable modem connection was still functioning quite well. Today, the third day 9/13/01, I am just about over the great shock of it all. My husband was able to come home last night. I am hearing of friends and their family members who were there. My co-worker and friend Kerene, who was with me at work that day, is anxiously awaiting news of her husband, a police officer. An online friend's husband is still missing. He worked in Tower One ...on a floor above 100. I heard today that former co-workers are safe. I am hoping to be able to go back to work tomorrow. I didn't realize until I hugged my husband last night, that I was probably..and still may be, suffering from shock! I slept for the first time since I woke up on 9/11/01. I look out the window today..and it is all sinking in..my beautiful skyline view is different..as is my whole country.
