Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: That Tuesday started out as any other day, but my children, huband and I were excited and packing. We were to go to Boston on the 12th to visit family. My husband called from his cell phone in the car just after 9 am and told me to put on the news. My children (aged 1 and 3) were watching Nick Jr. so I had no idea what I was going to see. The image, so horrific and strange, didn't make sense to me. My husband is a private pilot who trained here in South Florida at the same place the terrorists trained in Lantana. He knew it was no mistake that the tower was hit. We got off the phone and I continued to watch and saw the second plane hit. My phone rang again and it was my father. My step mother was at her usual post at Boston Logan airport that morning. She works for United Airlines. She loaded passengers on the very flight that I watched hit the second tower. Among the passengers were a handful of her friends, headed to Las Vegas via Los Angeles. They planned to be back on Friday and she was covering one of their shifts. My father told me what we had already suspected. The FBI was at Logan Airport with my step mother going through the flight passenger list and all of the other things that had to be done immediately. We knew there would be no trip to Boston the next day. But that was the least of it. My step mother was faced with the task of notifying all of the next of kin of the passengers of what had happened. She spent the next 10 days with the FBI going through all of the minutea of the morning of the 11th. We made our trip to Boston two weeks later and have gone on with things as usual. I heard from a cousin in New York that 4 of my cousins were to be at the twin towers that day but for various reasons were not there. One cousin, a computer technician was to go there first thing, but at the last minute changed his schedule to go there in the afternoon. He had a clear view of the towers from his other clients office and witnessed the entire thing out a window before evacuating. Another cousin was working from home due to morning sickness that day. Cousin number 3 missed his train and did not arrive at all to the towers that morning. A fourth cousin was to have a job interview there that morning but had rescheduled to the day before. God held us all in the palm of His hand that morning. SOme people ask where God was during the entire tradgedy. He was there, where He always is, with all of us. At the towers and beyond. Tell us your story: the morning of september 11 2001 was like any other morning, i was at my desk working taking calls from customers assisting them in getting there telephone service turned on. i noticed everytime the breakroom door opened i would hear moans and crys of oh my God.......i got up to go to the break room and saw everyone watching the tv......when i saw the newscast showing a live shot of an airplane running into one of the trade center buildings i could not beleive what i was seeing............i was numb......confused not sure what was going on. we started asking one and other if this was someone trying to commit suicide or a plane that was out of control.......then we saw the other plane come straight for the other tower.........i still could not beleive what i was seeing.....everyone including myself started to silently weep.....those poor innocent people in the planes and the buildings.....i had to go back to my desk but it was very hard to continue to do my job.....how could i just continue like nothing was going on when so many people had lost there lives....every chance i got to go to the break room i did. i was shocked to hear about the plane going down in pennysvania......the plane in virginia.....it just was so hard to beleive that some terrorist group had targetted the united states.......then the anger came.....with the tears and sadness....all i could think about where those people trapped in the towers still fighting for there lives.....the policemen and firemen who lost there lives doing there jobs....it just was almost to much to bear.............after a few days i noticed a change in how people treated each other, the comaraderie and pride in who we where....i was very touched at how people in our building immediatly started taking up collections for the families who lost there loved ones....the biggest thing that i will always remember and cherish is how the united states.....(the whole country) all became one people......these families where our families....the patriotism that became alive again and one year later is still alive and burning bright in this country. unfortunatly for the devil who implemented this tragedy he did not cause the united states to fall or buckle with fear.....we became stronger and very determined to do our best to stop people like him from ever even thinking about coming to our country and taking away the lives of our people....we have all suffered from what this devil has done....a lot of us including my husband and myself has lost something.....(stock markets dropped and we lost our retirement) but we will go on and do the best that we can.....as will the suvivors and widows and widowers and the orphans of that fateful day.......because we the people of the united states are a strong people and getting stronger.......with the help of each other.... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: By the time I woke up California time, wich was seven thirty in the morning both tower had been hit and were raging with fire. As soon as I wake up in the morning I turn on the Today Show and I saw this horrible image on my television and could not beleive my eyes. I couldn't leave the television, knowing that I had to get ready for work. I was debating if I should even go to work or take my daughter to school. I had kind of figured that we were pretty much safe in California so I decided to get ready for work and also get my daughter ready for school. Riding to work Iwas in a trance and you could look around to everyone in their cars going to work also in a trance. We just could not beleive what was happening to our country. Looking back now it seems like everything wasjust too perfect and calm, take it America had it's problems but life was good. I was in New York a year before 911 and I still fell as though I had had a preminition . Within the course of maybee an hour on one of the days that I was in the city my girlfriend and I saw three to four sets of twins. I didn't think anything about that, after that some other things happened to me while being in New York and I just wanted out of there, my spirit felt weighed down and I couldn't tell what was going on with me,I had a funny feeling about the city, I didn't want to fly home, I was afraid to. I was suppose to fly out of Kennedy and ended up flying out of Jersey International Airport. I was so releived to get back to the west coast. Looking back those moments while I was in the city I truly feel like God was trying to tell me somthing and I just did not know how to decipher what was going on around me. My prayers go to all who have suffered from this tragic, tragic incedent. Always remember that God and your loved ones are always with you. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Holly Cavanaugh and I am a freshman at Cleveland State. I was a junior in H.S. when the 9/11 tragedy occured. I was sitting in French class when the planes struck the two towers. The Senior Social studies teacher at my High School came in and told our French teacher that two planes had struck the World Trade Center towers. At first, we laughed and said, "Oh, he's just teasing us." But as I got up to go deliver a message to the office, I walked in and they had on the televison images of the burning towers. I could not believe my eyes. I walked back in and said, "it's true. The WTC towers have been hit and they're on fire from the jet fuel!" As the bell rang, we all rushed to our next classes and immediately everyone turned on the TV's. It was ten minutes into the next period when I saw the south tower collaspe. I lost it, opened the door that led to the outside and screamed with anger. But then I heard a low rumble. I looked up, and saw a plane heading towards Cleveland, but it was low for it to just be passing by. And I mean, it wasn't a small plane that we see land at Geauga county Airport every now and then. This was a JET-LINER. I stood there and thought, and I shook my head "No." I went back inside, and I saw the North Tower fall, and I screamed again. However, we all heard a low rumble again and looked outside. That plane was back. We all looked at each other and we were like, "Uh oh." We would then learn, twenty minutes later, that plane was Flight 93, the plane that crashed in a PA field. I will never forget that day. Ever. Every time I flip channels and I see on program on Discovery or some other channel that talks about it, mental images of those towers burning flash into my mind. I truly believe though, that after this, you could tell that everyone in America became more proud of our Nation that before. Tell us your story: That morning I had awaken extremly early for no apparent reason, for me I was a ninth grader in high school and I wouldn't have gotten up if my mom was throwing things at me. But this morning was different, I first got up at about 2 o'clock, went back sleep, got up at about 3, then I stayed in bed till about 3:30 when I turned on the television. At first I thought it was just really early news, but when I turned the station it was on every single station. I just thought my battery in my remote was dead. But when I stoped it on MTV I thought I was going to be listening to some music, but the T.V. was talking about WTC. I had no idea what WTC was I thought I was watching a movie. Tell us your story: I remember I'd just been joking with a friend of mine when I walked into third period and saw my teacher with a look on his face that I'd never seen there before. It was somewhere between anger and fascination. The radio was on in the back corner of the room, as it usually was, so my teacher had been one of the first in the school to hear about the attacks. I dropped my books in my usual seat and listened to the radio and the nervous chatter in the classroom for a moment. I surprised myself by thinking first of my brother (whom I usually think of as an annoying guy I have to deal with whether I want to or not). He lives and goes to college in Manhattan. I knew that both his appartment and his school where not really near the southern tip of the island, but I still thought of him first. My next thought was my mother and our standing family rule to check in at a time like that. I asked my teacher if I could run over to the payphone now, beat the rush when the rest of the school found out. I sprinted across the school, dialed so fast I almost screwed up my own home phone number. I had a short conversation with my mom, who told me that my brother had checked in by email and that he had actually stood on the roof of one of his school buildings and seen the second plane hit. My mom thanked me for checking in and I told her I had to go because other students were already starting to gravitate towards the phones. I knew my family was safe and I wanted to give the others a chance to call home. The rest of that day everyone was in a daze. The administration refused to pass on official information, for fear of scaring us, I suppose, and most of the classrooms did not have radios or televisions. The result was wild rumors flying all over the place. The Golden Gate Bridge had been hit. The White House was blown up. Somebody bombed the Pentagon. As period after period passed the rumors got worse and more and more kids were signed out to be taken home by their parents. I even know a few seniors who just hopped in their cars and left. I don't think anyone blamed them. A certain section of students roamed the hallways randomly yelling such pithy, inspiring, and educated phrases as "NUKE 'EM ALL!" "JUST NUKE THE BASTARDS!" and "KILL ALL ARABS!" While I may have agreed with the basic sentiment of anger, there were times that day and in the following weeks that I wanted to throw textbooks at some of those kids. I suppose maybe that was their way of dealing with some of the fear, though. The history teacher who's classroom I had first heard about the attacks in continued to make the current issues part of the class discussions. We debated the "Nuke 'em" idea and the implications that the attacks would have on personal freedoms. I found that the discussions were a wonderful way of sorting out many of my own feelings on the subject. At home, my little sister told me the story of how her school administrators (at the local gradeschool) had misinformed the students to the point at which they were panicked and even more scared. (That principal was someone else I wanted to throw a textbook at.) We watched the news for about four hours solid, my dad spending much of his time in front of the TV along with the rest of us. Halfway through our fifth straight hour, while I was making a poor attempt at homework, I suddenly couldn't stand to watch or listen to the news any more. I litteraly screamed at my dad to turn the TV off. He agreed with me and that was that for the night. For the next few days we did watch the news, but not as much. None of us could really handle watching that footage over and over and over and over again . . . so we turned the TV off. This past year has gone by almost without my noticing it. This may be a function of my becoming a senior in high school, as I've heard that becoming a senior seems to happen to you almost before you even make it into high school in the first place, but I think it has something to do with a shift in my focus from obsessing so much about college and life after college back to the life I am living now. I went and joined the marching band and the choir, two things I'd always meant to do but never quite got around to. I begged and pleaded for a flying lesson for my 17th birthday because flying has always been my great dream and I wanted to make sure I did it. I consciously decided to make sure I hugged my mom and my dad and my sister and even my annoying brother more often. Maybe it was leftover fear from the anthrax scares and the treat of a followup attack, or maybe it was just a heightened awareness of my own mortality in general. Whichever, it definitely changed me. My wife and I were having breakfast,planning on taking a drive to a shopping center. My cellphone rang and it was a friend from New York. He asked if we were watching the news about the plane(supposedly a Cessena) that crashed into the Trade Center. As a former New Yorker who worked downtown, I immediately went home to watch CNN. I knew a number of people who worked in the North Tower and was horrified to see the events unfolding. As we began to call family in New York,my suspicions were confirmed as the second plane hit! Now the realization that our "home" was under attack began to sink in! My wife became ill watching the Towers burn and my thoughts turned to my kids. I wondered if they were aware of the tragedy and,if so, how they were handling it. At that moment, my daughter called from her phone and said the school was having an assembly to talk to the students. She said my son was across the auditorium and he wanted to speak to me immediately. I decided to go to their school and bring them home. Upon arrival, cars were lined up all over school grounds with parents rushing in to get their kids. It was chaotic at the school trying to find my children and get out quickly. We found my daughter,who was distraught,but no sign of my son. Suddenly, he appears,frantic and white as a ghost. His first question was to inquire about the friend who called me,thinking he was in the Towers. When I told him that my friend had moved uptown, he began to cry as he thought the worst!! We went home to spend the remainder of the day watching the news,silently grieving for those who were lost. One of those lost was a gentleman I worked with for a short period of time.The day after Thanksgiving 1987, I brought my daughter into work and she spent most of the day on his lap. He made her a ball out of rubber bands and attended to her as if she were his own. She's 18 now, and on a recent trip to Ground Zero,saw his name on a poster at St.Matthews. The realization of who he was and remembering the rubberband ball was very emotional for her. I hope the President was right when he said these people didn't die in vain. It would be a tragedy compounded if the scum who did this aren't found and killed!! I knew it was going to be a good day. Math was over and I was heading off to gym when I noticed that the teachers weren?t acting as normal. They looked, as they were afraid of something and extremely worried. I was finished for gym when my gym teacher Mr. B told me ?that a plane has just hit the trade centers?. My jaw dropped to the floor. Now first I?m thinking the plane was a small plane and the trade centers they were saying were the N.J INTL Trade centers. But no it was a big airliner and the trade centers were the World Trade center in N.Y. City. Around 10:00-11:00 our new principal called us up to the auditorium and told us about the world changing experience. All the teachers were worrying about friends and family members, and a lot of emotions were all about. Some students were using laughter and jokes to cheer up. Around 1:00 my mother called the school and came and got me out of school. All my other siblings were in the car. My Mother brought us down to Rita?s Italian Ices because she didn?t want us to watch the news all over the TV on almost every channel. Later that day at dinnertime while we were all eating there was no one talking throughout the whole entire night from the big shock! When I am in a car or on my school but, I see a whole new world. Flags and ribbons are all over the place. September 11th is not just a regular day; it is a memory that will have an effect on us forever. The tragedy has made me look at my family differently. Most families lost a dad (or other family member) in the attack. Some days I just want my dad to leave me alone because I am in a bad mood or I do not want my dad to help me with my math homework. I realized that some families had babies that did not get to meet their dad. Some families had an unborn child and neither the dad or mom got to see their child and the other way around. Now I try to make ever moment count with my dad. Red white and blue are the colors that represent our nation. Everywhere I go I see at least 40 cars or buildings with a patriotic symbol. Whenever I see this it makes me wonder. Did these people ever hang flags outside their houses before? Or did they just decide to put them out after 9/11? But at the same time it makes me feel good inside because it shows us that our nation is strong and not afraid to show everyone who we are. 9-11 has defiantly affected everyone in America. There is now tighter security at the air ports to make sure everyone is extra safe. Many Americans are confused or mad at the people who crashed the planes. They might be asking ?Why would anyone want to do this to anyone?? Every ones lives have been changed in some way since 9-11. Tell us your story: the morning of september 22, 2001 started out as a normal, beautiful almost fall day. actually woke up with a lot of anticipation and excitement for the upcoming weekend. went off to work at a job that i love. soon after arriving at work, i called a friend who works in washington dc. as we talked on the phone, finalizing plans for the weekend, i heard some talking in the background. could not really make out what was being said. my friend said to me, did you hear that???? my response was, i did hear talking, just don't know what was said. that's when i found out a plane had hit the world trade center. we actually joked about an air traffic controller going crazy. little did we know what actually happened. we soon hung up, with the promise to speak to each other tomorrow. some of my co-workers and i went downstairs where there was a television. i will NEVER forget the shock of seeing that second plane hit the world trade center. that is an image that will stay with me forever. there was a huge crowd around that television set and there was not a sound to be heard, except for crying. then came the news about the plane hitting the pentagon. i ran back to my desk and tried to call my friend, no answer, which was not very comforting. we were all allowed to go home for the day. i raced home and turned on the television and was glued to it for the entire day. i tried calling my friend's cell phone, no answer. finally, much later in the day i received the e-mail that put my mind at ease. he was okay and at home. it was only later that i learned of the struggles of the people in washington that day, everyone being sent home at once, the very, very crowded metro and all the hours it took to get home. truly a horrendous day for america. as more details were being revealed thru the coming weeks, i would have to say what really got to me, after trying to comprehend the number of lives lost by this senseless act, is all the "09/11 babies" that would be born and grow up never knowing their fathers. i guess it gets to me so much because my daughter, who is now 20 years old and 7 weeks away from her wedding day, had to grow up without her father because of a senseless accident. my husband was killed by a drunk driver in 1982 when our daughter was only 4 months old. i did have him here with me when she was born. he was taken away all too soon. it was not easy raising a child by myself and it is not what we planned. i feel so much for those "09/11 widows and babies" they will have a rough road ahead of them. that's when you find out what you are made of. god bless all the surviving family members and friends of everyone who lost their lives on 09/11. we will NEVER forget!!!! this would not be complete without mentioning all the heroes of the day. the crew and passengers on the airplane that crashed in pennsylvania were truly brave heroes. knowing they were going to die had to be the most horrible thing imaginable. even though they knew they were going to die, they gave everything they had to make sure others didn't. to me that is the ultimate act of bravery. all the firefighters, police and just regular people who helped, you are the best. may god bless each and everyone of you. the USA is a much stronger and closer nation since 09/11/01. may we always stay that way and fight the evil in the world. The only thing I heard was a hysterical "turn on your t.v." I watched the second plane crash, and can't begin to describe the immense feeling of panic. I'm not sure how long I sat with my mouth hanging open before I got my son in the car & drove to my sister's, all the while glancing up at the sky in fear. We sat the whole day in a state of horror, anxious, glued to the t.v. Shock froze me to my seat where I cried, and felt completely helpless because I wanted to do something.I wanted it to not be real, but as the hours passed, the disbelief turned into a choking sorrow. Though I didn't loose anyone close to me on that day,I will never be the same. Even as I sit trying to write about it, the powerful emotional surge makes me breathless. I will never be the same. I live every day for my family, and pray for the lost ones. I know they say time heals all wounds, but how can there possibly be enough time for this one? There is simply no better way to illustrate the complete and total shock I felt on that fateful and unfortunate day. That morning, I had begun to awaken from a deep sleep. In my semi-conscious state, I was beginning to hear words and phrases coming from the T.V. that I left on. "...a plane has just hit the World Trade Center..." That cut through the grogginess and I sat upright in bed. I wondered what kind of pilot could lose sight of the Twin Towers. I was seeing it all with my own eyes, yet the reality of it all had not fully sunk in. It was like watching a movie. Then I decided to get dressed. When I returned, I saw the South Tower erupt in flames. This was no accident. We were being attacked. From that point, I sat watching the latest developements as they happened. The third plane crashing into the Pentagon, the center of the U.S. military. I didn't think it could get any worse. It did. Yet another plane was (heroically, it turns out) brought down in nearby Shanksville, roughly 2 1/2 to 3 hours from Pittsburgh. It was closer now. Downtown Pittsburgh was evacuated. People were in a mad rush to get home. Parents pulled thier children out of school. The events of that day are now ingrained in every American's memory. Within hours both towers collapsing, the Pentagon on fire, thousands dead. No matter what happened, things seemed to get worse. Then, like a Pheonix rising from the ashes, the damaged American spirit returned stronger than ever. People tried to help any way they could. Some held vigils, some went to Ground Zero to help attempt a rescue, some made donations, children collected pennies. That is what I remember most of that tragic day. Tell us your story: Submitted by: vicky lacy From: London, England It is mid September, 2001 and I have just returned from New York to London, having spent a week or so with my brother in Brooklyn. I?d had a strong compulsion to go and see for myself the utter destruction at Ground Zero - not for any sick, voyeuristic reasons, but because I wanted to experience and grieve with fellow Americans and feel part of it. Over here in England (where I have lived for the past 30 years) I had watched the atrocities live on TV, and having been born in New York, I felt a strong compulsion to get there as quickly as possible. So I booked the first flight I could get, much to the amazement of friends and family who thought I was ?taking a chance? by flying so soon after the hijacks. Anyway, my adventures in Manhattan were, to say the least, worth it to me if not to anyone else. My brother and sister-in-law and all of their friends who live in New York could not bring themselves to go down to Lower Manhattan which I fully understand. It is their territory and they know it so well, so the thought of seeing it as it is today is quite honestly too painful. I, on the other hand, am not very familiar with downtown Manhattan and so there was less nostalgia involved. It does not mean I was not affected, quite the contrary. It made an enormous impact on me and strengthened my feelings about the city I was born in. It also made me even more aware of the delicate line we all face between life and death. If a strong city like New York can be reduced to rubble, it makes it even more likely that other cities could experience the same fate. London is possibly the next sitting target for terrorism in whatever form it may come. For many years, I had suffered from panic attacks. My journey down to Ground Zero completely by myself was a major accomplishment for me - considering that not long ago I couldn't even sit through Mrs. Doubtfire in the cinema for more than 2 minutes, or wait in a supermarket queue. Here is the description of my journey down to Ground Zero (or "The Pit" as New Yorkers now call it) The day was hot and sticky - around 88 degrees, with a pure blue sky. I wandered down to Canal Street which was the furthest point which the general public were allowed to venture in Lower Manhattan. It is about 8 blocks from Ground Zero - far enough away for safety. For some reason, I have always had the knack of persuading people to let me do what I want and this was no exception. I befriended a "Cop" who escorted me through the metal barricade and endless groups of soldiers and police, saying I was "OK for entry". Why he let me through and no one else, I will never know, but I am grateful to him nonetheless. When I approached the first sight of the disaster site, my heart skipped a beat and for a second or two had warning signs of one of my panic attacks. But the horrific sight was so much more important than thoughts of my stupid panic attacks that I carried on regardless. With each step I took, the more visible was the carnage. Acrid smoke was still thick in the air even after 8 days, and occasionally when the wind shifted I got a whiff of decomposing flesh. I had borrowed a camera and found that it was broken so I went into a Photo shop to buy a disposable camera. The shop was directly across the street from the disaster site and the display window was broken and covered in dust. That did not stop them from opening their shop to the public (most of whom were press, public officials and local residents) I later found out that the owner of the shop had been killed by flying debris and his employees were trying to raise money for his family by selling what they could from the shop. Block after block I saw damaged buildings, covered in thick dust and broken windows. Once these buildings were shiny and majestic, reaching for the sky. Now they looked like abandoned warehouses in a diabolical slum area. One building which must have been about 70 stories high had an enormous chunk taken out of its side, like a giant had taken a bite out of it. Another building had about 10 of its top stories hanging down like Spanish Moss on a willow tree. Shops still had their merchandise laid out neatly ready to be bought by the public, only everything was covered in about 5 inches of white dust and would never be sold to a soul. It was eerie beyond belief. These shops were like ghost houses. The actual epicentre of where the World Trade Centre had been was so much larger than the TV and photographs could show. It was never-ending, block after block after block after block. The rubble was almost as high as an average sized building, and smoke was still escaping out of scattered pockets. Fire engines, cranes, police cars, red cross vans, heavy duty transport lorries, ambulances and army vehicles filled the streets. It truly had the look of a war zone. Tired and dusty rescuers consisting of firemen (first and foremost), police, and medics came and went constantly from the recovery site. Many were being interviewed by the press as they left the area to go home, having worked for up to 20 hours at a stretch. But in spite of their exhaustion and sadness, they had incredible spirits. In fact, I was surprised at the almost happy-go-lucky comradery of all these brave heroes. It is true that at times like this (and during the Blitz in London for example), that people get a certain strength from sticking together in the most horrific circumstances. It is almost as if each individual heart and soul of these people melts into one enormous heart and soul and they become as one. I definitely felt it myself. Within half a block of where the Trade Centre once stood is the oldest church in New York. There is a peaceful graveyard surrounding it with beautiful trees and singing birds. It is only one storey high with a steeple and it used to look totally out of place with its backdrop of modern skyscrapers. There is a space behind it where the Towers used to be which stares out at you like a sore thumb. Now the church somehow is not out of place. In fact, it looks like it was meant to be there all along - to remind us that there are more important things on earth for us to think about apart from war and destruction. I think everyone in the civilized world has shed a tear over the atrocities of September 11 and whether they have had personal experiences or not, their hearts have gone out to everyone who has. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Our train was scheduled to leave Hoboken at 9:00am and it pulled out on time. As the conductor came around to collect the tickets, he mentioned that the first tower was on fire. The train stopped moving just outside of the station and you could see Tower 1 as clear as day.Hoboken is just across the river. As I was looking at the burning building, I saw a plane come around in a semi circle and the next thing I knew, I saw a big ball of fire coming from the second tower. At that point, I knew we were under some kind of attack. I remember feeling very nervous because here we are, on a train that wasn't moving, no cellular service, and absolutely no way of knowing what was going on. After a while the train began moving and eventually I was able to get a signal on my phone. I called my mother and asked her to put the TV on and tell me what was going on. She reported that it was two domestic airplanes that had crashed into the buildings.I reported to the rest of the train. Since all traffic in to NY was suspended, the train continued on it's journey through NJ. When I reached my destination, I spent the rest of the day trying to contact my son and his father to make sure they were ok. I was unable to return home that night so I stayed at a local hotel, were I could see the burning buildings from my window. I lost 11 employees/colleagues on that day. I had stopped by my workplace to pick up some paperwork and one of the employees ran into the office to say an airplane had hit the World Trade Center. I thouht it was probably an accident so I went home and turned on te T.V. and what happened after that is, as they say, history. I was especially worried because my husband was in Texas on business and was supposed to come home on September 12, and my parents were on vacation, also in Texas. It was frightening for me because he wasn't here to help me deal with my fear and for awhile when they didn't kow exactly how many planes were still out there that were hijacked it was very scary. My husband did not come home until that Saturday September 15, and I was a nervous wreck and did't want him to fly but he said "Don't worry, I won't let anyone get away with this again!" He came home safely and I could finally breathe a sigh of relief. My ordeal was NOTHING compared to people who lost loved ones and I will never forget those people who died and made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. I am an Investment Officer and was monitoring the financial news for the day on my computer when the news came across on Reuters that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. That was all...just a sentence. I mentioned it to my colleagues and we thought it must have been a small plane that got off course. I continued to monitor the news and went to the major news web sites to try to get more information. It wasn't long before we realized something terrible was happening. Our concern grew with each report and update. As we became aware of the scope of the crash we realized that some of our First Union colleagues were located in the World Trade Center. Our operations center had moved there only a few months earlier. By this time the rumors were flying and no one was sure what was actually happening. There was a sense of quiet panic. I watched in horror as the buidings collasped and the pentagon burned. For weeks afterward there was a feeling of fear whenever a plane flew overhead. I remembered having dinner at the Top of the World restaurant and the awesome views of New York city and the harbor. The worst part of the attack was all the innocent people who lost their lives by merely showing up for work or getting on an airplane. We received an e-mail from our corporate office that morning saying all of the First Union employees had gotten out of the World Trade Center and were safe. However, this turned out not to be true. We lost 4 colleagues when the buildings collasped. We all lost our feelings of safety and security that day, but we gained a a greater awareness of what is important in our lives and what isn't. The morning of September 11, 2001 changed our nation, the world and our lives forever. I am proud to be an American and proud of the way our nation responded to this attack on our way of life. I hope everyone remembers 9/11 and learns from it and that we do not slip back into complacency and that we never again take our freedoms for granted. At 9:00 am I noticed several people crying, I assumed these people had just lost a loved one, little did I know we all had lost a loved one. I stopped at a family store where they was watching tv. They were crying too. I looked up and saw the most hiddious site. I attempted to retrieve my other two children from school. At this time I was sick and took myself to the doctor's office to have my unborn child checked due to the stress I was in. I was told 'OH , It will be another week'. My children and I went to visit several family members. I began to experience pains again. At 10:29 pm that evening I delivered a beautiful baby boy. I will look at this child and remember that although these terrible people took our families and friends we have the next generation to protect and teach the importance of freedom and love. September 11, 2001 started as normal as any other day...I flipped on my TV at about 8:50, expecting the morning news on CNN. The first plane had just hit the first tower. I was stunned. I told everyone in the office to turn on their TVs, and we all watched together as the horror filled our tiny TV frames. We all watched together as the second plane hit. The tears streamed down our faces, our throats closed with anger, with fear, with utter disbelief. My shock overwhelmed me as I called my family, my friends to make sure they were okay...I just needed to hear their voices. My brother lives an hour from D.C., my parents and sisters 20 minutes from an army base in New York. I was hundreds of miles away, praying to God they would be okay. My second awakening came later that morning. My best friend lived in Boston - her brother - a friend of mine as well - worked in New York. I raced to my phone and called Renee. Her brother, Scott D. Bart, was in the first tower hit. She had heard nothing from him. As I listened to her crying as her world fell apart, mine fell apart with her. I had never heard pain like that before - I had never heard that kind of fear. She simply said, "He can't be alive." When the towers fell, so did my hope that Scott was alive. He died that day, along with so many other friends, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers. Renee is still grieving - one year later - on September 11, 2002. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was in an 8th grader at Washington Irving Middle School. I was in my third period English class when the school administrator got on the loudspeaker and announced that the World Trade Center and the Pentagon had been hit by an airplane. I really didn't have a first reaction because before then I had never heard of the Twin Towers, so them being hit by an airplane didn't register as a horrible tragedy to me. However, when we I went to my 4th period we watched on the television the burning towers and then the Pentagon, and then I realized how bad the situation really was. I heard the word kamikaze being thrown around, and I thought that was a strech and people were just thinking the worst. At the time I had no idea of terrorism and I was under the impression it was all an accident. My 4th period teacher let us watch for a little bit but then tried to go on with class and the lesson like nothing happend. Everyone was getting picked up early from school and we thought there would be an early closing but that wasn't the case. It was unusual to me that when I got home my mom who works in Washington DC, was home before me. When I walked in my mom said that my mom, grandma, brother, aunts and uncles had all called to make sure everything was OK. Today my life has been affected by the attacks because everytime I want to go to a Redskins game I get patted down and my purse gets searched. Everytime I get on an airplane I have to be there about an hour an a half ahead of time because of all the check points. Everyone's life has been affected due to the Patriot Act because our privacy can be invaded by the government. Slowly our liberties are being taken away, but the government says it will fight terrorism so most don't argue the cause. Students are allowed to carry cell phones in school after September 11. No other attacks can compare to the devestation of September 11,2001. However, I would say that the attack on Pearl Harbor another day in infamy would be the closest. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I'm sure my story starts like everyone elses. I woke up and got ready for work. The day began like any other day. I had to be at work at 7am, so I had to leave my house by 6am. My family was still asleep, so I didn't turn on a radio or a TV. I dislike talk radio, so I listened to a cd in the car on my way to work. In the six years that I had worked at Disneyland, I had rarely been asked to show my ID to get into the employee parking lot. I was angry with the security guard at the gate when he made me dig for it without an explanation as to why. The employee parking lot is a couple of blocks away from the park and employees were shuttled into the park. I first heard that a plane was deliberatly crashed into one of the twin towers. I was no longer angry with the security guard, now I understood. I made it to my location in Disneyland park after passing through rigerous security checks. The checked ID's and made us open every single compartment of our bags (needless to say, I stopped bringing bags to work). At the time I arrived, the park was still schedualed to open on time, but most of us had our doubts as to wheather or not that would happen. We did not have a tv in our location, but we did have a radio. We performed our morning routine of preparing to open the shops in Tomorrowland while listening to what was happening on the east coast. It was between 7:30 and 8am that we were told that the park would not be opening for the day. We were told to have our employees stay and do what ever was needed to prepare for the next day. When everything was done, then we could send everyone home. We were also asked to send some of our employees to the main entrance to act as guest control, turning guests away and explaining the situation. I sent several people to do that and assigned tasks to the rest of my employees, expecting to be there a couple of hours before sending everyone home. About fifteen minutes later, we received a phone call. We needed to send everyone home right away. We were to drop everything, lock the doors to our locations and leave. I went to each of my locations and ensured there was no one in any of them and that they were all secured. The others on the management team made sure everyone was accounted for and told them what was going on. I remember waiting at the gate to the shuttle making sure that all of my employees left before leaving myself. I went home and watched the news in horror, until I couldn't stand to watch anymore. I found out that all of the theme parks had been closed because they were potential targets, that was why we were made to leave in a hurry. I cried that day for everyone that was injured or killed that day. I grieved for their families. I still do. The day stands out in my mind. I remember conversations that I had and feelings I felt. It is my greatest hope that this never happens again. Life went on. September 12th came and went and suddenly it is September 11, 2002. I marveled today that a year has passed. The wounds are still so fresh that it does not feel that the year has passed. Disneyland reopened on September 12, 2001. The atmosphere was subdued, but people still came to the park. For a lot of people it was a brief escape from the horrible events of the day before. Security tightened up and is still like that today. New policies were implemented. We were given more information than ever before on what to do in the event of a man made or natural disaster. The days continue to pass.
