Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: This Tuesday, September 11, 2001, I was home, safe and sound (or so I thought). I had just awakened, got dressed for work, and came downstairs with my twin sister. I turned on our local news (I do this every morning; it helps me to wake up. Now, I wish I hadn't watched it...but would have that changed anything??) It was around 7:45 a.m. CST; and the usual news, weather and sports was on...an ordinary day, until a breaking news story caught my attention. Seems an airplane had accidently run into one of the World Trade Center Towers in New York City...I'd always wanted to go to New York City, and loved looking at pictures of the Twin Towers. I thought they were beautiful. We both expressed shock and horror at the first scenes of a huge hole in the side of one of the Towers, and we both said a prayer. I mentioned that it was bound to happen, because planes fly around tall buildings all the time...Love Field is located right in the middle of downtown Dallas. Then here came the second plane. IT DELIBERATELY ANGLED IN AND HIT THE SECOND TOWER. Right then, I knew. This was no accident...we were under attack. A sick feeling of shock...fear...horror and unbelief. NO WAY, MAN. NOT HERE. NOT in the United States...not IN the UNITED STATES!! I had to go to work, so I didn't get to watch any more of the news until much later that evening. My twin sister was so saddened by what she had seen, she turned off the television and cried. She was scared...what would happen next? She refused to watch. When I got home from work later on that day (by then, I had learned that the Towers had fallen, the Pentagon had been attacked, and another plane had gone down, through word of mouth), my twin sister was still scared and upset, so we decided to go to church. She was delivered from a spirit of fear. We had a bite to eat and then came home; she went to bed, and thankfully, slept peacefully. NOT ME. I turned on the t.v. and sat there for three straight hours, watching the day's events replay over and over and over and over again, searing into my mind. The planes hitting. The bursts of smoke and flame. Paper and God knows what else falling like confetti. People jumping for their lives...WHAT CHOICE WERE THEY GIVEN? The Towers falling--first one, then the other. The awful cloud of smoke and dust chasing people down the streets. The looks of panic and horror on everyone's faces. The sight of Congress singing "God bless America" on the Capital steps. The steely-eyed look of resolve and determination on our President's face. I saw all of this and more...and I cried like never before. Words started filling my mind, and the first of many poems was born that day. God gave me an unexpected blessing, you see. He gave me a Gift for writing. Before September 11's horror, I would hold everything in, whatever my emotion...especially if I were sad and angry. It would sit there and fester like a raging infection, sometimes for years, building and building until something would set me off. I was mean and nasty. September 11 changed all that. When nightmares wake me up, or I wake up with some ideas in my head, I write them down. Now, I release my emotions onto paper or onto my web page on Author's Den. It has calmed me considerably. I am more able to express myself effectively; I don't feel angry and bitter all of the time. As of this time, I've written over 200 poems, and over 50 articles. Several of them deal with September 11. Two of my poems have been published. That's nice, but the biggest blessing is that it lets me express my emotions in a way I had never done before, no matter what it is. Where was I on September 11? I'll never forget it...and I'll always remember. I know where I was when Kennedy was shot, when man first landed on the moon, when Elvis died, when the Challenger exploded, when the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed...and now, when America was attacked. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Our son-in-law, Bill, called quite upset. He had just seen the buildings in all their glory the day before. He was sitting in his truck waiting for permission to drive home and wanted us to know that he was alright. We heard another voice in the distance, but ignored it. All of a sudden Bill said, "I gotta go." Not wanting to let go of the connection, my wife said something else. (I don't recall what)He then said, quite sternly, I have to go. About twenty minutes later he called again. He told me that it was a police officer and he started interegating him. Asking what he was doing there & who he was talking to and why. The officer didn't believe him when he told him he was calling his family. After Bill explained that he wasn't able to get home to his family and needed to let them know he was alright and to make sure we were alright, the officer calmed down and appologized. Apparently a truck matching his truck's description was suppossedly carrying items used to make explosives. The whole world was terrorized by this unexcusable event. We will hold dear to our hearts the brave police officers, firefighters, and all others who worked to save the victims, help their families, and protect all of our country's citizens. It seemed like any other day. I woke up at 5:30 AM (like always) to get ready to go to school. I met my firend at the fence, which became out daily ritual, so that we would walk tot hte bus together. We talked while waiting for the bus and when it came, we simply got on and went to school. At school everyone walked around the hallways like zombies because all of us knew that it was way to early for anyone to be awake, much less at school; all of us just wanted to go home. Finally, the bell rang and all of the students went scurrying to calss; i went to Chemistry. After chemistry, the bell rung once again at 9:25, and i set off to go to spanish class. I remember that my teachear seemed different and kept floating from our roon to the roon across the hallwayto talk to the other teacher. After conversing with the other teacher, our teacher walked in stunned and in some what disbelief; she told us what had happened. She explained that the World Trade Center ahd beenhit by planes, the class was in shock and confusion. OUr teacher then turned on the TV and put on the news, and at that moment we realized what had REALLY happened. The news channel had split the screen inhalf, on half had the picture of the Twin Towers burning, and the other half had the picture of the Pentagon of fire. The images that were put before us seemed so unreal and scary. Many of the students from this area come from military families, so most of thier parents work in the Pentagon. Consequently, some girls in my class cried of panic and fear not knowing where their parents were. One of the girls from our class, as well as many toher students from other classes, went to the guidance office to try to get a hold of her parents. Through all of this, the rest of the class as still in awe of what they were watching. I was frightened not only for the other people that were in danger, but also for my family. My uncle and my aunt work in NYC, and my cousin, at the time was going to college in the city. I was worried about them as well as for my dad who works in D.C. All of a sudden, I remember looking at the screen and seeing more smoke coming from the Twin Towers than usual, and right at that moment the tower crumbled to the floor. The TV screen blew up the picture of the WTC so that it filled up the whole screen. I saw the tower fall live; it is a lasting image that I know that I weill never forget. As the tower crumbled, I began to cry. It was just absolutely awful. The rest of the day seemed like a dream; it was all a blur. Now that I look back, I realized that even though much chaos resulted from such a catastrophe, there were also some good things that resulted from it too. Our nation as a whole came together and united as one to fighta gainst terrorism. Also, I don't believe that anyone has seen our contry be more patriotic than it was that week and the many days to floolow. All of us heard many movind stories of people who died, people who almost died, and heroes who gave up their lives to save others, but in the end, we eventually (though slowly) moved on and simply became stronger and more unified country. Tell us your story: I was at home asleep, when my boyfriend recieved a phone call from his mom telling him to turn on the t.v. right away it was about 9:30 am and the second plane had already hit the second tower and as soon as he saw this he rushed to wake me to see what was happening, I immediatly started to panic, because at that time I thought that America was under attack, in a sense we were under attack. I was sorry scared only because I was 5 months pregnant, I knew that every thing would change after that day, but as I see it all those lifes that were lost and all the sadness only made our lives and our ambitions that much stronger. I want to tell everyone that every one that died that day, every civilian every firefighter, police officer, and everyone that helped is a hero and will never be forgotten for as long as this world is turning and people are still breathing they will never be forgotten in my eyes and the eyes of my children and there children. Tell us your story: it was a day i rememeber in my heart forever and ever. it all began by taking my father to the train station in which i do mostly did every morning. he seemed happy and so did i. but, what we did not know, is that all that what was good would soon go bad. after drooping him off at his location, i decided to go to the mini-mart to pick up some cigarettes and coffee. walking in and asking for what i wanted was no problem, it was the little old man, staring at me and telling me telling about the sudden plane crash that had just takin place. my jaw had dropped to the ground in surprise. racing home to see all the actually events taken place made my hatrid grow more and more as every minute went by. but the only person i could picture of all those who perished, is the little old man looking me dead in the eye, telling of what has happened. will i ever see him again? did he know of anyone who was part of this disaster? i hope not, because of all who had died on that horrific day deserve to be remembered and never forgotten , just like how i will never forget him..... On my way home from my doctor's appointment, I heard on the radio that the twin towers had been bombed by planes. I came home and told my wife to turn on the T.V., with tears in my eyes. Then I called my Dad, and while I was on the phone we both watched in horror as the twin towers crumbled. Then I learned via CNN, that the Pentagon was bombed by another plane. Fearing for my children's safety, I rushed to both of their schools to pick them up. After we were all together, we all learned about Flight 93 crashing at Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It's a day that I'll never forget, but always remember. Q2. Has your life changed because of September 11,2001? If so, tell us how. It has changed for me because, even doing simple things like driving,walking,etc., I was taking things for granted. Now, everything I do and everything my family does, is taken with precaution, constantly watching our backs, our surroundings (which we shouldn't have to do). But I will tell you this, they caught us with our pants down, but rest assured they'll pay. Q3. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? First we should all remember the victims. Secondly we should remember all the heroes for example, Governor Pataki, Mayor Guliani, Port Authority, Paramedics, the firefighters, the policemen, the steelworkers, the military, the passengers of Flight 93 and President Bush, through his leadership the country was able to slowly but surely rebound from that day's horrific acts. Yes I did, and no my feelings for the American flag have not changed and never will change, because I am a true American and so is my family, we respect the flag for what it stands for, freedom! I was going to classes doing work and learning, not knowing what was going on the world at that time. It was an ordinary day: nice, cool, and great; very beautiful. Who was to know what was going to unfold onto the people of America. I first noticed something when people started leaving their classes I was in which was Social Studies. Then, more and more people started to leave. At that time, I felt a little queezy because this was not a regular thing to see. My class and I were starting to ask questions in which Mrs. Waitt had no answers for. The only thing she said is that there was a national threat. When I heard this, I was quite upset. The first thing that came to mind is that there was a nuclear attack which could be very bad. At lunch, one of my friends said that the World Trade Center was bombed and had fallen down. I was very, very freightened by that because America would wage war on the country that did that. I then asked who told him that and he said it was a teacher whom I asked right after. She then varified that which at that time I felt even worse. After recess, we were all brought to the gym to hear an anouncement about the attacks. We had many questions that were unanswered because there was insufficent supply of facts. My friends, including me, felt very bad and wanted to go home to see what happened. During this time, I felt very bad and did not want to do anything but go home. It is hard to descibe the feelings I felt for they were so in depth, so real, words can not describe it alone. I thought it was a horrible movie, it just could not be real. During the day I felt so grateful to live in our country that this experience is an unusual one. We buy boots and shoes for all of the military and I'm responsible for the quality of the footwear that we buy. That morning, we had footwear contractors in from Michigan and were going over some of our contracts when somebody came by our office and said that a commercial airplane had just crashed into the WTC in New York. I thought that was odd because it was a clear day and I couldn't understand how an airliner could do this. Someone had a radio and we started to listen to the reports when they said another airliner crashed into the second building of the world trade center. At that moment, we all looked at each other and knew we were at war. The contractors wound up driving back to Michigan and we have been supplying large quantities of boots and shoes to our military ever since. I think this was the worst attack against our country ever. This was a sneak attack against innocent civilians with a tragic loss of life. I'm confident this country will not ever rest until all of those responsible are brought to justice... I did not really know what happened until I got to work. We all listened to the radio and I snuck on the Internet to find out what was going on. I could not wait to get home to watch and learn what had happened. I sat glued to my TV all night and the next night. What a terrible thing to happen, and moreover, to have been planned. I do not follow the news much, but this was heavy on my mind. I do not know anyone personally who was in NY or on the airplanes, but I have been reading stories about the attacks. I read "Love, Greg and Lauren" (Lauren was in NY just walking into a tower when a fireball got her, and husband Greg tells, via email to his friends and family, her day-to-day recovery for the first 3 months) and I have 2 other books I bought to read regarding that fateful day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was home on maternity leave with my second daughter Peyton who was born on July 25. My husband had left for work and I was watching the Today show. When the first plane hit, they weren't sure exactly what happened. They thought it was a small private plane. I called my husband at work and left him a message saying "the weirdest thing just happened. A plane hit the World Trade Center." It was shortly after I hung up that the second plane hit. I stood in front of the TV and can't even remember what I was thinking at that point. Of course, after that, it was one news flash after the other. The plane hitting the Pentagon, Flight 93, the crumbling of the towers. My eyes were riveted to the TV for hours. During the course of the week I know I cried every day. All the people holding up pictures of loved ones, wondering if they were dead or alive, the memorial service in Washington. It was all too much to bear. We live close to Mpls/St. Paul Airport and there wasn't a time when I couldn't hear a commerical flight taking off or landing, but there was silence for the rest of the week. I remember waking up in the middle of the night and hearing nothing but the drone of military planes passing overhead. It was a very surreal and somewhat frightening experience. I was thinking of all the lost lives, I was wondering what the future held for my very young children. The world as I knew it would never be the same. I thought about how I would be able to raise my children in a world full of such hate and violence. But when they are old enough to understand what happened on September 11, I will tell them and try to teach them about what a hero really is. Not a sports figure, or rock star, but every day people doing heroic acts and giving their lives so that others may live. As she left, I turned on the TV to watch the morning news, since my classes did't start untill noon. I watched the last commercial break I would see for days and then, still groggy, sat transfixed as CNN began it's breaking news coverage. I remember seeing the second plane on the screen a split second before it hit. At that point I remember standing up and grabbing the phone. My instincts were to call my mom & dad, but I realized I had no way of reaching them since they were on vacation in Europe. We had just moved to Washington weeks before and realized there was simply no one I could call. As I watched, I became more and more alarmed. The FBI was investigating "foul play." All tunnels & bridges were closed. A commercial plane had been hijacked. One of the planes was an American Airlines 767 from Boston. As each of these chilling messages appeared on the breaking news banner across the sceen my heart beat faster. Aaron Brown, CNN's extraordinary anchor, announced a "significant fire" at the Pentagon. At this, I began to feel real fear. This was no longer just alarming, it became personally threatening. As initial reports came in, rumors of a fire on the National Mall were reported. I felt like I was living in a giant target. I decided to go get my sister from class, but it took me forever to get out the door because I kept stopping in front of the TV. I remember thinking "if this is terrorism, it's worked. I feel terrorized." I walked through our lobby and saw people crowded around a television, unable to move, just as I had been upstairs. As I walked outside I was not prepared for what I would see. There was total gridlock on the streets and I realized that thousands of people were trying to leave Washington. It looked like a movie but I remember repeating to myself this is REAL. Through a stroke of blind luck, I ran into my sister on the street, almost literally. Someone had interrupted her class and said "the Pentagon & State Department have exploded. We're at war." She immediatly ran for me just as I had for her. Together we watched both towers fall. Debating about whether or not to leave Washington. We decided that if one more attack happened here we'd leave. Thank God that did't happen. I will never forget how scared and alone we felt. Phone lines were down. Our parents out of the country. We were in a city both new to us, and under attack. Since then we've had to deal with anthrax as well as the sniper attacks. While both were terrifying, in a way we had been toughened by the horror of 9/11, strengthened somehow by it too. I no longer think about leaving Washington. I will stay in defiance of the terrorists, anthrax killers, and snipers, who want to instill fear in us all. Tell us your story: I was getting ready to come into work that morning and had turned on "Good Morning America" where they had just broken in with the story that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I had more than a passing interest in the story -- I had once lived in New York and knew there was a possibility I knew people who worked in the towers. Also, in the back of mind was the nagging question -- how did a plane manage to crash into the WTC? I had flown in and out of New York enough times to know that flying around Manhattan is standard procedure, not flying over it. However, in a few minutes that question was answered when before my eyes I saw the second plane crash into the second tower. At that point I knew, as did most Americans, that this was not some kind of weird accident. Then the reports began to come in about something happening at the Pentagon. When it was confirmed that it was yet another airplane I could feel my adrenaline surging. I truly felt the fight or flight mode that so often accompanies that rush. I called my workplace, a university library, to tell them what was happening and to get access to radios and/or televisions. By the time I got to work the first collapse had happened. I couldn't comprehend it. Then I saw the second tower collapse. During the day we kept a small portable television on in the library and people came by to get what information was available. We turned to the various news web pages to see if something new could be turned up. Along with the rest of the country we began to piece together the events of the day -- how four planes had been hijacked, how three of those had hit their mark and how the fourth had been brought down in rural Pennsylvania. We worried about the safety of the President as he rode in Air Force One. As so many people did I called friends and family that I could reach, to touch someone through a phone call if not face-to-face. Again, I wondered if anyone I knew had been trapped in the towers. Over the course of the next two weeks I found out that one person who had been a few years behind me in school was doing a one-day seminar in Windows on the World and didn't survive. The younger brother of another person I was acquainted with worked for Cantor-Fitzgerald. He was killed and left a wife and two daughters, the youngest of whom was only a few months old. The sheer numbers were hard to deal with. Familiar names were impossible. I heard of another person from school who was working at the Pentagon when it was hit. Fortunately he was on the other side of the building and survived. In so many ways the events of September 11th seem like yesterday, in other ways it seems like years have already gone by. It will be emblazoned on my memory for my lifetime. To the thousands of victims in both New York and Washington, and to those brave souls on the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania -- we'll never forget. At that time I was working at a dentist office in Baton Rouge. I got to work about 20 minutes late because the traffic was unbelievable. When I entered the office everyone was talking about the terrrible incident and there was a television on in every operatory. It took all of 3 minutes watching one of the new showings to discover what had incurred. At the office, I was in charge of shipping cases to the lab in California. From that day and until the day I left that office in Januaruy, cases were delayed for an additional 3-6 weeks. I would speak to various patients throught the next few months, who all offered their stories of how the 9/11 incident had changed their lives. As a Louisiana History teacher, I am aware of the impact this event had on our country's economy and how many lives were changed as the threat of terrorist was planted in the minds of each citizen regardlesss of race, gender, or location. I may be just one middle-aged, mother of two, working in a small school district in small town in Louisiana, but I represent one of millions that will never forget that day and how this country shifted from the Big U S of A into a country of people that need each other to be whole. I received a devestating phone call from one of my employees in Houston who was also driving to work. I turned on my radio and could not believe what had just happened. When I got to work, we got together and said some prayers for all the family and friends who were affected by the horrible tragedies. We turned on the television and just cried together. At lunch the local churchs had put together Memorial & Prayer Services so I attended one of those. At the end of the day our city had put together a prayer service and we went together to that service. When I picked up my daughter from school I could not stop hugging and kissing her, the same for my husband when I got home. We turned on the tv at work and for the rest of the dday wwe stood watching as the towers burned and finally fell to the earth. Tears flowed from everyone's eyes, supervisors, managers, president of the company, everyone there stood in silence and cried. I felt a hollowness inside me and wondered why. Why would someone do something like this? They would have to be very sick minded with no heart oor soul. Then I realized the Pentagon also was hit. "What next?" came to my mind and when are we going to get the Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines launched out to wherever to take care of this. I was very emotional because I was pregnant. I remember sitting down because my legs went numb. Then I just prayed to God to help those sould lost and to please be with their families. Then I prayed for my family many miles away that they would be safe. I arrived home at 4:30 pm and stayed in front of the television watching Peter Jennings until I fell asleep. I went to school on the bus with my friends and my backpack. My first period class was Spanish and I didn't hear anything about the attack, probably because nothing had happened yet. I went to my second period class and still nothing. When I got to my third period class, the classroom was dark with the television on. The class was Global Studies; the teacher being Mrs. Capen. I walked into the room and I saw the really big news on the television. At first I thought it was just a rerun of the bomb that was in the Twin Towers in 1993 because I saw the gaping hole in the side of one of the towers. When I saw the other plane hit I got really scared because I thought, "what if one of my family members was in one of the towers?" After this my class and I heard that a large airplane also had struck the Pentagon. All that period we watched the devastating disaster. My class and I watched the first tower collapse which made everyone fell very sad inside. When that class was over I knew that was going to be a class to remember. I went to Earth Science next. It was exactly like my Global Studies class. My teacher Mr. Goldpenny said, " The school never said that we had to teach our classes." So all during that period we watched CNN. My friend and I usually talk constantly during Earth Science lab but this was the first time that we had never talked during this class because it was so important to our lives that we paid attention to this historical event. I watched CNN every period that day, even during my lunch period! I went home and my mother ran up to me and hugged me because she was so happy that we weren't involved in the "Attack on America". I flopped on the couch because I was so tired and I was hoping that there was something on television to watch, like a good movie, but every fifteen out of twenty channels where talking about the attack, or playing the collapse of the second tower. The same day that this all happened another plane went down in Somerset, Pennsylvania. The passengers of the plane fought the terrorists and the plane crashed in some field in Pennsylvania. About three days afterwards, people were telling me that the plane in Somerset, Pennsylvania was supposed to be going to Somerset, New York (where Barker is located). The terrorists were aiming for Somerset because there is a major power plant called AES. AES generates power for some of Manhattan. This was only a rumor. After the devastating disaster everyone, including me, were very sad and had high hopes for some payback on Osama bin Laden. Now this tragedy has influenced people to give blood and give money to the Red Cross to help the injured. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was a typical Teusday morning, I was sitting in my 2-Dimensional Design class. We had been in class for nearly two weeks and I was still getting accustomed to my new classmates and my new professors, I was just two weeks out from back home (Flushing Queens). Around 10:30am when we were allowed to go on break I was sitting calmly in my chair drinking a soda. My Professor came in and said that the world trade center had been hit by an aircraft. The first thing I thought was 'Oh great another plane crash' then she continued to say that they think it was a terrorist attack, I guess it was my typical New Yorker response. My reaction was of confusion, then I became concerned that maybe one of my family members was there. The professor let us out of class early, I headed home I felt zoned out and alien. As if everything was going on around me but it was like watching a silent movie. As soon as I walked into my apartment my roomate asked me if I had seen what had happend and if I was alright, the only thing I remember saying was that if any of my family is hurt or killed because of this I was going to enlist. They began to show replays of the airplanes hitting the towers, then I thought about my uncle Alex who works at the World Trade Center renovating offices. I began to try to reach my mom and my family but the lines were busy. I decided to go to class because I needed to keep busy. I sat through the rest of my classes thinking about the attacks trying not to stay calm and I kept telling myself my family was ok. I went and picked up my friends John and Geoff and we went to get something to eat. John was in worse shape then I was, he was actually in shock. I kind of felt bad because it seemed that I couldn't show any emotion and here was my best friend trembling and nervous. Geoff on the other hand was probably the most mature of all of us, he would just sit there and ask if we were ok if he could do anything to help. Later in the day I got ahold of my dad, he told me to try and reach my uncle Alex and told me not to worry about my mom, everyone else was ok. It took another week to finally get ahold of my mom in the city, she said she was fine and that my uncle Alex was fine too. Luckily he had gotten out of the building after the second plane hit. He had run all the way down to battery park and was still recovering from the shock. After I got ahold of my mom I guess I started feeling anger against the people who did this horrific act of violence. Things started to rebuild in terms of people moving on and getting on with their lives. I just feel sad for the people that lost friends and family in the planes and in those buildings.
