Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a Public Defender. On September 11, I was, and did, start my first murder trial. I left my office, a short walk from the courthouse, just after 9AM. As usual, I had my radio on the local news station, WBZ. As I was leaving, an announcer said there was an unusual sight in NYC - a plane had hit one of the Towers, and it was smoking. They kind of made light of it - it appeared to have been a small plane. I went to court, and we began to get the case going. During a break, I left the courtroom, and saw ashen faces and persons huddled around a few radios. They said both Towers were hit, that Boston flights were missing, that a bomb had gone off outside the State Dept, and there was smoke from the Pentagon and, I believe, the Capital. And a Tower was gone. I told the secretary who told me this that that was impossible - a skyscraper doesn't fall because of a plane. The radio confirmed all of this (much of it later not true). The DA heard the same radio, and told me he was worried b/c a friend of his was flying that day out of Logan. I also got word that an attorney in my office had just been told her dad was on a flight out of Logan to California. Thankfully, both were OK (I remember Susan getting the call from her dad in Buffalo, where his flight was forced down.) But another attorney in our office, from Marblehead, would learn soon that she lost several friends. The Judge came into the room with the radio to get some papers, and heard for the first time the news. Here was 2 lawyers trying a major case, and a judge trying to do his job - we had to get back to work. So we did. At the next break, the news was stark - there was no WJC anymore. At that point, we heard that other courthouses were shutting down, but we were still up. I marveled that anyone would think some county court would be a target, but public buildings were closing everywhere. Bill the DA and I did our openings with all this news in the back of our minds. Thankfully, the Judge realized going on was pointless. I explained to my client, who would lose the rest of his life later that week, what had happened. He had converted to Islam in jail, but it was I, not him, who wondered if that would hurt him - he couldn't even take in what had happened. Since his conversion was not evident, we decided it should not matter. The Judge stopped the trial for the day, telling the Jury, who had not idea, that a horrific tragedy had struck us, that the judge and attorneys would be unable to continue, and to prepare themselves. And so I finally went home to see the extent of what had occurred, and to cry. But the case continued the next day, and through the next week. As a reult, I got my news at night, while trying to concentrate on the case. My main reminder was looking out my window, which was in Logan's flight path, and never seeing a plane except high-flying fighters and larger jets. I had never seen the sky like that. (And I remember seeing my first commercial jet when they opened the airports again.) When it was over, I went about my business. But my colleagues and friends noticed that I was very short-tempered. I knew that in fact the tears I had held through the trial were screaming to get out. With every story of a missing fireman, policeman, or citizen, I would choke up. Finally, someone explained to me that I had never had that chance to mource during the tragedy, and it was coming out now. Funny thing is, even today, March 1, 2002, when I see some family member still looking for something to bring home, I tear up. I believe in the end we all do have not just a national consciousness that allows us to cry for our nation, but a human consciousness that goes beyond borders. I hope that we are able to cry the same tears for the innocent Afghans, and other nations, that have and will also suffer because of this inability by some to feel for others. I thought that it was just a small plane. After the second plane hit, I received a phone call from my mother telling me that the United States was being attacked. I could not believe what I had heard. We found a television and turned it on. At that point I was in fear and shock. To this day, I still am very moved by the events of that day. Some teacher walked by about 7:55 (8:55 NY time)and said that something's or someone's attacking New York City. Then I went to my 2nd hour history class. We turned on the T.V. and sure enough they had the Trade Towers on it. My entire class went silent. We couldn't believe what we were seeing. Some of us started to cry because they had either been there recently, in the towers or just to New York City. But the worst part had to have been when we were all watching in other hours, and then seeing the second plane hit. Again, we all went silent for we had not idea and then when the news mentioned that it was probably the works of terroists, someone said Bin Lauden. Sure enough he was right. When then the towers began to colapse, we were agian like "Oh My God!". We just couldn't stop looking at the news. To me, it didnt seem like it was real, that America couldnt be under attack because we had the best military there is. It's like we were watching some movie that seemed very true, but it was only fictional.Then the death numbers started coming in and that really scared us. At first with the estimates of 5,000 dead? That was rediculus but then the realistic of the 3,000 was horrible. One is too many, let alone 3,000 lost. It was inhumaine and unrealistic to us all. Then coming home was worse becasue it was all that was on. Things were unreal to us, and the replays didnt seem to make it any more real to us. Just seeing when the two towers fell, and the second plane hitting is something that will remembered until I die. But then seeing the actual site brougt the realism to us all. We were shocked, stunned and in mourning for all those who had been there, those who parished, and those who lost thier loved ones on that fateful day. Tell us your story: I had woken up that Tuesday morning at 7:30 to the radio like I usually do, so I can get ready & to get my son ready for school. It was the second week of school, so we were just starting to get settled in to a new schedule. At least that was the plan to get ready, as I was waking up to the radio all I can remember was hearing that a plane had gone into the World Trade Center. My feeling at that moment was disbelief. I had to wake up & sit there to make sure what I was hearing. Then I turned on the Today Show & right there on the screen the World Trade Center was hurt & hurt bad. Then to hear that we were being attack it was really beyond my comprehension. In my 30 years of life I have not had to emotionally deal with someone or something attacking our freedom. As I was watching all of this unfold in front of me my children had woken up. What do I tell my boy?s (6&3 at the time) how do we explain to them what has just happened? That was a big question in my mind to make them understand that we were safe, even though my feelings of being safe had been compromised. We tried to get ready for the day, listening to local reports that school was going on as scheduled. I knew my son had to go to school, he needed the same routine, and he need to know that everything is ok & school is where he needs to be. I got home from taking my son to school to find out that all aircraft have been diverted & grounded tell further notice. This had affected us in a big way because my husband works for an airline in which he had only been working there for 3 months. I tried really hard not to be angry. We had already gone through hard times & we had just moved to Vegas to get a new start. I had to ask myself why is this happening? What gave them the right? Now that it has been a year after the attacks I have pondered those questions watching story after story of the many people who have lost their lives & listening to all the lives that have changed forever. I have come to realize that things happen for a reason, even though we might not understand what the reason is. My Family & I have changed, we do miss the freedom we had before 9/11. It makes us more grateful for the freedom we do have & blessed for each day of that freedom. Our prayers & thoughts go out to everyone who lost a loved one & to every one of us who where affected by it. My husband called me at work around 9:00 a.m. and told me that a plane had hit the first tower. I just thought it was a horrific accident and felt saddened that lives were probably lost. My husband is self-employed, so after he called me, he left home to go to a job. I don't think an hour passed and he phoned me from his cell phone and told me that a plane had hit the Pentagon. I'll never forget his words, "We're under attack!" I remember freezing and feeling numb. I didn't really know what to do and being so far away, felt very helpless. After work, I went home and stayed glued to the t.v. in disbelief for several hours. Our children are older and when they came home from school, they had already heard about it so we discussed it as a family. My husband is a Marine Reservist who served in the Persian Gulf and things have been very stressful over the past year. They were told the weekend after September 11th, 2001, "It's not if, but when" in regards to activation. I spent most of today (9/11/2002), watching the t.v. and trying to remember and soak up as much information as I could. We went to church tonight as a family and remembered those who died so tragically. We are preparing as a family for my husband to go and defend this great nation. It saddens me today that people are so against America going, but I am proud and thankful that my husband and so many others are willing to give their lives so that we may continue to live free. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was driving to school when the morning radio host mentioned that something horrible had happened, but they didn't know what. Then news of the attack came through. I knew my cousin, Melody, lived and worked in D.C., so I called my aunt to see if she had heard from her. That is the moment I found out that Melody actually worked in the Pentagon. We didn't know the details, but Melody had been able to get a call through saying she was out of the building and unhurt. Over the next couple of days, as Melody was able to talk about it, we found out that a miracle had happened. Melody and her coworkers had not heard of the attack on the WTC until my aunt called her and told her. A few minutes after that call, the plane hit the Pentagon. Melody told us that if she had not heard of the attack, she and her office mate would probably had crawled under their desks, but instead they immediately rushed out of the building with the other survivors, narrowly missing the fireball that passed through moments later. You see, Melody's office was on the first floor, immediately to the left of the large gaping hole left by the plane. My father, a licensed counselor at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, AL, waited several hours to get on the base on Sept. 11. My brother and I pleaded with him to just go back home, because no one knew when or where the next attack might be. Instead, he went to work so he could do his job - helping people get through the day. To me, both my father and my cousin are heroes. They did not let the attack get in the way of doing their job - helping people, and helping the Department of Defense. My son, three years old at the time, watched the news with my parents and me that night. He kept saying, "I want to see the movie with the planes hitting the building again!" I know most of the world wanted to believe it was just a movie. Maybe a more recent version of War of the Worlds. Unfortunately, it will be placed in our children's text books as another horrifying event, along with Pearl Harbor and WW II. My hope is that my son, and the other everyday survivors, will remember and learn from the attacks. If we are to be survivors, we must make the best of every day. But I was in the class that first heard what had happened. I was in my Ancient History class when my teacher was about to turn the television to channel 3 so we could watch a movie on the Egyptians. But when he turned on the television it was on channel 42, CNN. And what our class saw was the most disturbing thing we had ever seen. They were showing in slow motion the first plane hitting the World Trade Center. I was asking myself, ?is this real?? Then they showed the building after the first one hit. And after a while, there was one thing we all saw. We all saw the second plane hit the World Trade Center. My class all watched one of the towers crumble to the ground. I was so shocked and scared. After all this we heard about the plane crashing at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. The whole school was scared that maybe a plane was going to crash and hit the school. My mother was so scared also because when she heard World Trade Center she thought it was the one in Boston. She was scared because my stepfather was right near the Trade Center in Boston doing the electrical things he does. When everyone in my home got home everyone could breathe. This happened often so I wasn't expecting what he was about to tell us. When he came back in, he said a plane just hit the world trade center, proceeding to say that it may be a "kamikaze" plane. I was thinking yeah right, noone would do that to our country, it was probably just an accident or something. (I am 21 years old, and have never experienced a terror attack or anything close to it.) As he continued to teach, another teacher motioned for my teacher to go out again, then I got a little nervous. This time when he came back he said class is dismissed, another plane hit the other tower and the every college (state building) is being sent home. I couldn't believe it. When I left, I listened to my car radio in disbelief as they talked of maybe up to 8 planes that were unaccounted for. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My sister was Lisa Trerotola, Lisa worked on the 64th floor of tower #1 with the Port Authority of NY & NJ, the TB&T dept. My lovely sister was a person that every one loved, when you met Lisa it seemed as if you new her for ever. On that tragic and devastating day, lisa was amoung 15 other co workers two of which survived coming down stair well B. The last words my Dad had with Lisa was, Dad I have to go, I have to go, and to this day my father has to live with those last words every day. It is now a year and a couple of months and it feels like this is a bad dream and I will wake up and it would be a horrable one. For me, my sister was a jewel and other people in this world should be so lucky as I was to have Lisa in my life. The fond memories that I have no one could ever take from me. You took our hearts and broke them, but our love of each other and our soul will live on forever. The group that was responsible for September 11th, 2001 your judgement day will come, no one on this earth could ever tell me there was a reason for taking inosent lives that tragic day. Because no religon or god would ever allow this to happen in there name. My sisters tragic death was not going to let me become bitter with hatred and it is so easy to do, instead I must be strong for my family and teach my children not to hate as other do. I have enough sorrow every time I look into my parent eyes and my neice and nephews eyes and the rest of my familys, knowing lisa is gone. And how much I had to look forward to Michael and lisa and the twins and my family grow old together. My boyfriend, whom I live with and also works as a Pricing coordinator, had to be at work at 7am. I didn't have to be there until 10:30am, but since I didn't have my drivers license at the time I had to ride in with him. I planned on sitting in the car listening to the radio until around 9am, when he had to leave to go to class at a college nearby. He would return to work after his class was over. Shortly after 8:30, he came out to the car and I kissed him goodbye, telling him I would see him when he got back. I went in to go to the breakroom where we have a television planning to watch tv until I had to clock in to work. When I went in one of our baggers named Wally was sitting at a table in front of the tv. "A plane has hit one of the World Trade Towers." he told me. I sat down, thinking it was a small plane, and it was an accident. I think we were watching Good Morning America, something like that, and the anchor was speaking on the phone to a lady who was in a nearby buisness building. She was telling what she could see from her view, as we watched the towers burning on our screen from a similar view to hers. Suddenly, we saw a speck off to the side and both of us said at the same time, "What's that?" You could then hear the lady and her coworkers screaming in terror, "Oh my God, another plane!" and boom, we saw it hit right before our eyes. Then I knew, this was no accident, and I began to long for my boyfriend. I needed to be near him. We watched in horror as the towers burned, and I began to cry. I am only 20 years old, I wasn't alive during WW2, and I was only a child during the Gulf War. I can, however, remember seeing it on tv, and since I was so young I remember hiding underneath my bed thinking I was safe from all the bombing if it ever came here to Kentucky. I didn't know any better. Now its a little different. I know my bed won't save me from any bombs. But I am still terrified of the very thought of war. Seeing those towers burning made me realize this meant war, and although it may be a good reason for war, for some, I just dont want to go through what my parents went through in WW2. In fact I don't believe any one should ever have to go through that again. Shortly after, we saw that the Pentagon had been the next target. I really got frightened, and began to pray to God to make these people stop. The plane then crashed in Pennsylvania, and people were saying there were others heading for Camp David and the Capitol. All these rumors were flying, then someone mentioned that Disney World had been closed and evacuated. I remembered that my manager was there on vacation and I became worried about her. I also had to laugh a little because I knew she was probably extremely mad; something always happens to her vacations! My boyfriend then returned from class. He knew what had happened but didn't know any details, and was unaware of all the nasty rumors. (Lucky for him) Some of the older guys at my work had been around at the time of WW2. One had been drafted. And they all began talking about the draft, that they would take anyone over the age of 18. I know the draft was abolished, but it still bothered me. I have a 18 year old brother, my boyfriend is 22 years old, and I graduated with many boys and girls who went into the military. I have a friend who is pregnant and married to a man in the navy. My sister had just given birth to my nephew, and a coworker who was a very good friend was pregnant and due in a few months. It terrifies me to think that they could be drafted, or that my friends could have to fight in this war, or that these children would be brought into a world filled with war and be tagged as a war child like my mother. I guess I just cry for peace too much, but too much just doesn't seem to be enough. For the rest of the day we were glued to the tv like flys on glue paper. We saw the towers fall, and the people cry. We saw tons of pictures of loved ones who were lost or missing. Out of an 8 hour work day I worked for about an hour total, all in between running back and forth between the tv in our breakroom, the tv in our pharmacy and the phone to call my mom. And for the next few weeks our television set was always on Fox News or MSNBC or CNN. Until finally I got tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. Either it was the towers falling, or the haunting image of the second plane slamming into the second tower. That will haunt me for the rest of my life, just like Pearl Harbor haunts others. I can actually say I saw the second plane hit. I may not have been there in New York, but I still saw it happen. And it still follows me and scares me. Soon I got tired of hearing that they were "Closing in on Bin Laden" "Bin Laden is most likely dead in a cave somewhere." to me it was all blah blah blah. I felt that the media and government were trying to ease all of our fears, but not many people are stupid enough to believe it after we heave heard it over and over again. Instead it was just creating more fear. That is when I turned off the tv, and began to go on with life just as I should. I was still scared, but when the tv would show more coverage of 9-11 and Afghanistan, I would go walking or read a magazine, providing it wasn't filled with stories of 9-11. And gradually, things got easier. Yesterday, the anniversary of 9-11, I worked again just like last year, but did everything I could to stay away from the televisions. After work, I went downtown to a local memorial and left 3 votive candles, a red, white and blue. I then went to the most beautiful church I have ever been in and prayed. Then I went home and went to bed. And I felt much better this year, than I would have if I would have turned on my tv. In 2002 my wife, Deloris and I, were playing in the tournament. Just shortly before noon the foursome I was with finished the 9th hole and went into the club house to get a drink and sandwich before finishing the back nine. When we got in the club house we noticed everyone glued to the TV set. That was my first notice of the attacks. Being military retirees the comments being made cannot be repeated here. I was in our Estimating department of Hodess Building Company on the 11th of september. I remember an announcement coming over the PA that we were all to report to the board room as something has happened. An incident like this was the furthest from my mind. I thought something was going on in another country and we were involved. I reported as told and saw the gruesome scene of the Buildings on fire, smoke billowing out in thick black clouds. I was in shock. I could not believe what I was seeing. I went to my desk silently and started to pray for them. It was around 23 days after September 11th when I began to piece together a puzzle that I would never have thought possible for my life. Before 911, there was a new hire down stairs in the MIS department. He would take the head of MIS and replace the old MIS person. Karl was telling stories to Luke about his sisters occupation. His sister, worked for NORAD as a Leutenant. She was in Florence, the headquarters responsible for monitoring and notifying in case of attack, more specifically, they were watching for airline hijackings as well as foriegn bombers, missiles etc. their job was to watch the skies against attack. They had failed. Karl invited me into his office 23 or so days after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I viewed an email that his sister had written. In this email detailed everything that happened at their base on that day. she said that "they knew about the planes being off course" and they also knew they were hijacked. They did not react. They knew for 15 minutes. They had a squack 7500 emitting from the planes and failed to launch the airplanes to intercept the airliners or to escort them to a runway. I suspect that Karl was under diress and his sister stalled the launch of fighter jets to save his life. I know that this sounds strange and surreal, yet, I cannot understand why they would not launch if they knew. this secret has been robbing me of sleep and happiness. I am hoping that it becomes public so all of America will know how bad it really is and how weak we really were. We need to come together and prevent this from ever happening again. I was going in to take a shower when my wife called me from the living room to tell me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I knew a plane had hit the Empire State Building in the forties and nothing too bad had happened so I figured that some tourist plane had accidently hit the building. I walked into my living room and looked at the tv and I noticed right away that both buildings were burning. I knew that this could not have happened from one plane so right away I knew that this was not an accident. I started watching the news then I called my father so he could watch it too. He was as shocked as I was. As I was watching it we started hearing about other planes crashing and missing. We lived right in the flight path of LaGuardia Airport so my wife and I started getting very nervous. I then called downstairs to talk to my friend and as we were talking on the phone I was watching the news and they were doing some interview and all of a sudden there was a loud explosion and we couldn't see the World Trade Center any more. I thought it was because of the dust but my neighbor kept saying "What happened to the tower? Where is it?" I couldn't believe that it fell so I kept staring hard at the set hoping somehow through the dust I would be able to see it. I mean it couldn't collapse it just couldn't. I hung up from my friend and kept watching the news. Shortly afterward the second tower stared to collapse and all I could do was yell "NO, NO, NO". I work in a hospital in New York City and know a lot of firemen, police and EMTs. All I could think of were all the innocent people I knew who were most certainly killed right now. My wife and I both broke down in tears. For the rest of the day I didn't leave the couch. I sat there in my robe unable to move for hours. Finally around 2:30 I was able to shower but every few minutes I would still start crying. The next day I went to work and my hospital overlooked Manhattan. I had to force myself to look. There it was a column of smoke coming up from where the World Trade Center used to be. It was unbelievable. The people at work were just going through the paces. Nobody could concentrate. We were all like robots. One of the people who works in my department is a captain in the fire department and nobody knew what had happened to him. When it was all over I found out that the man in my department was wounded but he will be ok. Another firefighter I knew was dead. Six people at work lost husbands or fathers with one woman losing both her father and husband. To this day I still tear up about this. HBO had a special about it and I cried through most it. While typing this I keep tearing up. Today is the anniversary. I didn't want to work but I knew that if I didn't that I would just stay home and probably cry all day. We had a memorial at work and I started crying. I've done more crying this year than I have done in my entire life and I don't know when it will stop. A part of my heart was torn out when those towers went down and I don't think I will ever get over it. It was the most picture perfect sunny day that I can ever remember. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and the sky was endlessly blue. I remember thinking it was just too beautiful to go anywhere. As I watched the plane strike the World Trade Tower I was frozen in disbelief. Then when the second plane hit it was a feeling of such utter shock and horror that I still can't find the words to descibe that moment. I was frozen in time. All those people in the building. I called family members and friends. I just wanted to connect. What if this was the end? I knew it was the end. The end to a time and a way of being we had all known and taken for granted. Finally late in the day I heard Sarah's voice. It was so reassuring. I was so grateful and yet saddened with the knowledge of others who would not be so fortunate. I don't remember when I finally felt comfortable enough to turn off the TV. It was weeks. I felt compelled to stay informed. I was carrying heavy baggage. There was no relief. What had happened to the human race? So much violence and turmoil and pain. Would I ever feel light hearted again? Yes but not to the same extent. There is always that fear lurking just below the surface that something sinister is about to happen. I still get anxious if I miss the national news broadcast. I am cautious but more importantly I am also consciously grateful. I am grateful for every day, good, bad or in between. I feel especially lucky to be a woman living in a society that provides so much freedom of thought and expression. I am grateful for the love of family and friends. I see the blue sky. Tell us your story: I learned about the attack as it happened as a news flash on a salesman's blackberry pager; not quite believing a voice from across the hall that said the world trade center had been hit by a plane. We all left the meeting and turned on a television to watch. As events unfolded, I sat down to write the following letter. I sent it to a local paper but it was never published. I recently sent it to a New York Fireman who was one of the last to be pulled from the rubble. He found it profoundly comforting even a year later. I appreciate this opportunity to share my thoughts of that day. I had originally meant it to be anonymous at the time, the tone of this is clear, but now I feel that somehow that is a form of hiding behind a mass of other voices. It does not matter so much now either way. This is a forum for us to know each other in a way that ties us all together as caring human beings. Long after I am gone, it is comforting to know that someone might find my thoughts, along with so many others, as a testament to the never ending hope for peace. I am prouder now than ever to be an American but I am equally proud to be part of the world community that decries terrorism in any form. Title A name given to the resource September 11 Digital Archive Stories Description An account of the resource This collection is the bulk of the archive, representing the reactions and experiences of thousands of individuals beginning in 2002. 911DA Story 911DA Story: Story Tell us about what you did, saw, or heard on September 11th. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Like so many other Americans, I was nowhere near New York, Washington D.C., or that field in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. I was at home sleeping after having worked the night shift at the hospital that I am employed at. I remember waking up and looking at the television that I'd left on and thinking that instead of the Today Show that should have been on, somehow the channel must have been changed to a movie channel showing some action film. The images flashed before my eyes over and over of those two planes crashing into the World Trade Center, of the people terrified beyond explanation running away from the collapsing buildings, the news of the planes crashing into the Pentagon and into a field in Pennsylvania filled my ears. Slowly I came to realise this wasn't a movie, it wasn't even a nightmare. I sat there on my couch and watched the towers collapse and felt like my heart was being crushed. I knew I was watching thousands die right before my eyes. I was afraid for myself, for my family, for our country. All I wanted to do at that moment was surround myself with people that I loved, to hold them tight and never let go. It's been over a year now and remembering that day still brings back a little bit of the cold and fear, but more than anything else my heart is now filled with pride and love. I considered myself patriotic before 9/11 but now words can't describe how I feel about America. We are a strong and proud people that can find faith and hope in the face of the greatest adversity. We are a people that can pull together and help our neighbors who are hurting. We are a people with a spirit that can not ever be broken, no matter what. God bless America.
