Little did I know that actually saved two other of my loved ones lives. I was only 10 when the day came. My dad ( who works for the Port Authority and visits the Trade Center often)took the day off from work, to go to his cousin's funeral.Besides that, it was a very normal day. My brother and I walked to school together as always (he was only 8), not to mention it was a really gorgeous day. It was sunny, and warm. School had only started a week ago, so it wasn't such a pleasant thing to start off the year.The first clue that something was wrong, was that one of the teachers were crying. Second thing was one by one, people were going home. Third thing, is that we weren't able to go to outside for recess. That's when I knew something wasn't right. I lived right across the bay from the towers, so as we were walking to gym class we saw thick, black smoke through the window.It was so bad, it looked like a plane crashed right across the street from the school.I was still clueless about what was going on. All I heard were rumors about a plane crash.The teachers weren't allowed to tell us what was going on, but they were all informed. While I was at gym class, there was an announcement made that all students who usually go home for lunch, wouldn't be allowed to, and to report to the auditorium so they could find out why. That started to make me really nervous. Luckily someone in my class went home for lunch, so when he got back,I immediatley asked him what was going on. He so casually said that a plane crashed into The World Trade Center. I started to cry right after he told me, because my aunt and uncle work there, and practically my whole family worked for the Port Authority and vist the towers often. I was crying so much that a girl in my class pulled me out and tried to calm me down, and told me that everything was going to be okay. That kept me relieved, until I got to lunch.There were people crying everywhere,and kids at my table kept going home.I started crying again, and a teacher pulled me out, and took me to the nurse's office. She also told me that everything was going to be okay, and that we were safe in school. For the rest of the day at school, I felt alittle better. After lunch there were about 9 students left out of a 22 student class. We didin't do much for the rest of our time there. Our teacher just allowed us to talk and relax.At about an hour before school is supposed to get out, a teacher came and told us that all our guardians had been contacted, and we have to head to the auditorium. I was happy to go there, because I knew I'd see my younger brother. That would make me more relaxed to see that he was alright. I explained to him what was going on, and he luckily wasn't too upset, and said that his teacher let his class know about it, because she got a call on her cell phone about it, before the school even notified her. The principal then announced that there would be no school the following day. Everyone there was cheering, but it made me kind of worried. All my worries went away, when I saw my baby-sitter walk through the door. My brother and I ran out, but we didn't ask questions until we got into the car.Then I asked for the whole story. He told us everything, and that made me feel really good to know the whole truth, since there had been so many rumors going on at school. He told us about the terrorists and everything.That kind of scared me alittle, but I was glad to know the truth. I had a feeling they wouldn't take so much precaution if it was just an accidental plane crash. The thing that upsetted me the most was that he told me the buildings collapsed, and were gone!I didn't ask him if he knew about my family, because I'd rather hear it straight from my mom or dad. Once I got home I said hi to his wife, and ran to the phone to call my mom. My brother tried first, but they got disconnected. Then I tried, and I got through. It was so relieving to hear her voice. I asked her about my aunt, uncle, and anyone who might have been there. She said Thank God everybody was alright. They all went to the funeral for the cousin. I was so relieved, I skipped through the house and told everybody, but everybody already knew. Then I asked about my dad, and she said he was stuck in Staten Island since the Bayonne Bridge was closed, but he was with my aunt and grandma. As long as he was safee I was okay. We were with the baby-sitters at their house until around 7:30, and then my dad came to pick us up. Immediatley my brother and I ran to go give him a hug. We were so happy to see him. Then we went home, and I stood outside with some friends just starring at the smoke. My mom didn't get home until around 9:30. We were so happy to see her. We went to give her hugs too. It was hard to go to sleep at night, just thinking that this happened just a few miles away from us, and that my parents had to go back to work the next day! I don't think they slept all night. I think they spent it watching the news. All I heard them say was, " Wait until we find out who didn't make it". The next day, my parents dropped us off at the baby-sitter's house. Since we had no school, we spent the day watching the news, and reading the newspaper. There was not one page in there that wasn't about the events the previous day. This was going on world wide. It was only the next day I found out that The Pentagon was hit, and there was a crash in Penn. as well. That night my parents were just crying at all their friends they found out had died. I even knew some of them. The next few days were spent with family telling their stories about what happned to them. It was interesting to find out where they all were. The funny thing is that, I was so upset that my dad's cousin died, but his death wounded up saving some of my family's lives. I guess everything DOES happen for a reason. So I guess eventually, we'll find out why this happned. For know, all we can do is trust God, and think about that terrible day. When we entered the classroom we did the normal routine of writing the assignmnets in our planners then doing our daily work. In the middle of the first assignment the phone rang. It was the front another teacher telign Mr. C to turn on his t.v to the news. So with this pale blank stare Mr. C turned on the t.v. and we all watched the reruns of the planes smashing into the Twin Towers. It was history in the making, immediatly we stopped what we were doing and glued our eye's to the news. I wanted to cry so badly. I couldnt though. I was in a state of shock. That's the only word I can think of to describe how I felt and an urgency to get home with my one year old daughter. I left work that afternoon and picked her up from daycare. Tell us your story: I turned on the tv that morning and had on Channel 2, our local Atlanta ABC affiliate, and Charles Gibson was mentioning that a plane flew into one of the Twin Towers. A minute later, another plane hit. I saw it with my own eyes, but thought they were doing a recreation of the first plane hitting. Growing up in NYC and having family and friends in the city that day made me nervous and sad, shocked and angry all at once. My cousin was a soon to be retiring NYPD cop who was in court that morning (a block or two away). He saw the devastation with his own eyes and helped out as best he could. He survived thankfully, but he knew several people who didn't make it and my uncle who was a Fire Chief in the NYPD knew a lot of his fellow brothers that died. I want to say a hearty thank you to all the Police, Fireman and Service men and women of our great country. To all those who lost loved ones, family or friends, I'm sorry for your loss. My office was in the media center of the elementary school. I received a phone call from a friend that worked at a local branch of the national government agency telling me that a plane had just crashed into the WTC. I immediately turned on CNN. Seconds later, I remember seeing the other plane crash into the second tower. All I remember is thinking that I wanted to pick my son up from daycare and hold him in my arms. I wanted to speak to my best friend and make sure he was alright. I wanted to call my mom to tell her that I loved her. I didn't know anyone personally that lost their lives in the attacks, but I still felt a great loss. I mourned for the fallen and their families. I cried with them and my heart shattered. I have yet to come to terms with this tragedy and I have yet to find a way to cope. My heart still aches for the victims and their families. I will never forget. No traffic noise on Pacific Coast Highway. No lawnmowers, no leaf blowers. Many calls and emails had come in from co-workers and family back east, telling me about the tragedy that had occurred while the West Coast slept. Everyone I knew was fine. I looked at the TV, but turned it off immediately. Just couldn't bear to watch the horrors in my beloved New York. From my back patio overlooking the golf course, I saw a foursome of lady golfers, laughing, chatting, playing golf. The terrible news hadn't reached them yet. They would hear about it soon enough. It was surreal to watch these happy ladies playing through, oblivious to the news, when the rest of the world was so saddened. I did not know how to feel at first, all i could thnk about was is every thing alright? I did not know unill later that over two thoushand lives were lost in the attacks. Tell us your story: 911 Day For many, like myself, especially living in Manhattan, the day was horrendous, shocking, unimaginable and I cried a lot inside (and out). It is a day to stamp onto history, in infamy, regardless of one?s politics or perspective. Personally, it was one of the hardest days emotionally I?ve had to live through? I am not afraid to say I am traumatized. We?re OK. Physically and health-wise, we are fine. At the time, Joanne was at work at her client?s location, and I was home sleeping- she called moments later after the first plane hit to wake me, by the time I got up, both towers of the World Trade were lit up? Watching it unfold on CNN digital cable TV and in a real live view from our high-rise apartment. (The TV is right next to the window)- I was mesmerized, surfing the news and simultaneously using my high-powered binoculars: seeing it actually happening, burning , it was totally overwhelming, almost unbelievable, looking right at it in a real time viewpoint, in real life - sirens screaming one after another all hours, and on CNN live, animated, mediated on the screen- my urban space became the global stage- instant news from a place of the current crisis international ? Joanne?s vendor company was located in the WTC. (It?s weird to say "was" being that it was still existing only hours ago.) If you remember, I sent out some attachments with photos of July 4th fireworks last year, taken from the 83rd floor. In the past, we have spent plenty of time around the immediate area ("ground zero"), shopping in the WTC mall and shops outside and eating at favorite restaurants there and close by. Her company, IQ Financial, the maker of the bank loan administration software that Joanne implements for their customers, is one of the hundreds of companies located there. She has known many of her friends and associates from that office, for years, even before moving to NYC. Joanne had an office in the WTC building #2 last year, and could have gone to work for the company further as an employee, had she not signed directly with her client French bank. She still had been working on a consistent basis with many of the people there, and had been in contact socially with several, considering a few her very good friends. We have gone out together, eating, drinking with them and even have been to the Jets football games together. When Joanne got home she spent some time on the phone, trying to get word about her friends- these people are our good friends? and they have not been heard from. It is ironic and upsetting for me to think that the dedicated workers were the ones that went back up. It?s the good ones that always get the shaft. They all die young. We?re hoping for some word tomorrow- The phone?s been ringing off the hook? The missing people?s family members are going crazy? For myself, I was wide awake upon opening the shades and seeing the fires topping the buildings, surreal smudges of soot, distinct flames in the four mile distance- the Twin Towers were like candles, incense sticks starting to burn down. It didn?t occur to me the gravity of the situation at first- I thought, maybe they were small prop planes and they?d eventually put out the fire, with only a few injured or killed- no big deal. But this was. I took a bunch of pictures, as I watched the TV coverage zoomed in on the World Trade Center. And when the horror escalated, an explosion of TV media coverage; interviews and reportage on-the-scene; repeating the video clips over and over- I started to breath harder and my heart started feeling heavy. As the South Tower collapsed, my heart sunk, and I would have dropped to the floor if the couch were not right at my knees. All I could think of was Joanne?s former office people- our friends and 10,000 others! It was as if my aura was being depleted- swept along by the rise thousands of souls into the cloud of smoke. When the second tower fell, I was already drenched in tears- devastated by the thought of buried masses and in anguish made more terrible by familiarity making personal the place? and the faces? Thousands of lives and deaths- several people said as they were evacuating, climbing down the stairs, the firefighters were making their way up, shortly afterwards, only minutes after the people get out- the tower collapsed? Thousands of stories- One of Joanne?s friends- a British co-worker of Joanne?s, called his wife on his cell phone from the stairwell saying he couldn?t get out of the building because the levels below were too hot- in effect he had a chance to say good-bye- he had three kids? Another one of Joanne?s friends- leaving the building, she got down the many levels, continued down flights of stairs, got below the levels when and where the 2nd plane hit, and while feeling the rumbling, shaking of the building, kept going, calmly proceeding, left the building- they were walking away, when their tower collapsed, and the air became thick with dust and smoke, and everything turned pitch black - it was then that she became afraid and thought she was going to die! My cat, of 11 years, had died the previous day of a brain tumor, and I was not sleeping well. So I was up, and moving around when I heard my mothers' voice... and realized that something horrible had happened. I ran to the living room to watch the TV, and was shocked from head to toe, at what the newsmen/women were reporting. The World Trade Center.... was under attack??? I couldnt believe my eyes when, as I watched the skyline, they saw another plane approaching.. and as the world exploded for millions... I cried. I shook. I felt like chicken little, that the sky was falling, and that the darkest day I had ever thought to see, had arrived. I have heard older folks talk about, "where were you when Kennedy got shot?"; or "where were you when we landed on the moon?"; or, "where were you when the space shuttle blew up?" I will never forget the earth shattering feelings of 9-11-01, nor the horror. I was fortunate that I had no one there that I knew personally. I have felt for all those who did have loved ones, friends or family. My nephew is a fireman, and I a health care worker... and I know, had we been able to be there.. he and I both would have been in the middle of it, and have nothing but respect, admiration, and total understanding of those who gave their all for their fellow coworkers, friends, and family members. I think that is what makes America..... the willingness of all of us who live here, to help one another pick up a heavy load, and bear it on to fruition. I thank you for this opportunity. At the time I was working for the Manchester School District. The previous day we had had an incident with a little boy who was in a wheel chair. His chair had tipped over while we were outside. The next day, Sept. 11, one of the other teachers came in and asked us if we heard what had happened. The teacher that I worked with and I automatically thought that the parents of this child was in the office and wanted to see us. We assumed they were very angry with us but the teacher that had come to our room told us, no the towers in NYC had been hit. We were both stunned. Personally I didn't know anyone who was in any of the planes or any of the buildings but just having this happen to our "neighbors" was very sad. It compares little with the heroics displayed by firefighters, police and the Americans on Flight 93, but it's worth noting. I teach a course in Humanities at Los Angeles Trade and Tech. The semester began on Wednesday, Sept. 5th. I informed my students that, among other things, we would be studying the origins of world religions. After class, one student sought me out and asked if the lectures included Islam. "Yes," I answered. "Why, are you a Muslim?" She said yes and smiled broadly, delighted that I at least knew the difference between the words "Islam" and "Muslim." School was cancelled on Sept. 11th. I knew my students would have a million questions the next day, so I prepared a special lecture. I researched the history of Palestine, because it was thought at that time that Palestinian nationals had been behind the attacks. I also prepared my lecture on Islam, and looked up information on Osama Bin Laden as his name had been mentioned as well. I wondered often if my Musilm student would attend. After such an affront by members of her faith, it seemed likely that she would want to avoid public exposure. I was wrong. She not only came to class, she sat in the center in the front row. As I talked about Islam, she offered the correct pronouciation of Arabic terms and clarification on political issues. She seemed anxious to let us all know that she and her faith were not evil. The action this student took to attend class that evening is the bravest thing I have ever wintessed personally. After all, I am not an American and I was safe here in Australia at the time of the attacks. What finally made my decision for me was the fact that the events of September 11 have scarcely been far from my mind since. On September 11th I was in hospital. I remember being very uncomfortable at the time that I didn't have a room to myself (how pathetic this worry seems now) and that I had to share with three others. You know how it is in hospital. You get woken up at some ridiculously early hour. At 5.45am our time I turned on the television. I wasn't really awake and at first I thought what I was seeing was some kind of film or show. Unfortunately it soon became apparent this was all too real. Of course I was seeing it somewhat later because of the time difference. I have never been so grateful to have not been alone. We were all crying, suddenly our concerns seemed petty and ridiculous. The doctors and nurses were coming in and watching the television in disbelief, standing there for long periods at a time transfixed. And that was how the day went and it seemed to go on forever. Lying in bed, watching the coverage and tears, plenty of tears. Later anger as they showed coverage of the jubilation in the Middle East. Incomprehensible to every single one of us. Although this tragedy was not ours directly, it has affected us all the same. Life changed for all of us on this day. I have read the stories of those brave men and women who risked their life to rescue those from the WTC. I have read the stories of people who lost loved ones in NY, The Pentagon and Pensylvania. I have read the stories of those who were in any of these places as these events occured. I have read the stories of their fellow Americans who, as I did, watched all of this horror unfold on television whilst knowing that they, purely by virtue of being American, were targeted. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work as a reporter at a small town paper, and my husband in a sheriff's deputy here in the county. He was off work that day and happened to be here in the office with me when our receptionist said that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I remember saying "On purpose?" and she said she didn't know. I remember the events starting to unfold after that, we started listening to the radio and I just went blank. Actually my thoughts were racing at the speed of light, but it was going so fast that it felt as if I could think of nothing at all. The reporter in me wanted to be there, covering it, seeing it first hand, taking pictures, and the part of me that wants to be at least a reserve police officer someday wanted to be there to help. All those people, I kept thinking, all those people are losing their lives. It was the most horrific thing to me, something I could've never imagined. The strangest thing about the event to me other than the obvioius is that the day before it happened I wasn't feeling well and I stayed home from work. My husband was sleeping and I was watching my soaps when out of nowhere I had this overwhelming urge that something was going to happen. I didn't know when or where or what it related to, I just felt so strongly that something was going to happen, to the point I woke my husband up to tell him. I was freaked out about it for the whole rest of the day, because the feeling was getting stronger. It is possible to know such things? Is it possible that when a concentration of evil such as that is about to make its presence known that people who are extra sensitive can actually feel it? I don't know the answer to that for certain, I just know what I felt, and I remember the look on my husband's face when he remembered that part of what I said was that whatever was going to happen would change everything. Those were the very words I used. We both still get goosebumps everytime we think about it. As it happened, and all day long with the images on TV burning themselves into my memory, I cried a lot, I cried for all those people and their families and indeed this whole world, for look at what it had come to! I got very upset thinking of those in wheelchairs who didn't get out because there were no provisions for such a thing, that really bothered me a lot. I didn't think I had enough tears in me to cry as much as I did that day and in days to follow. In our paper this week, which came out on Wednesday, we wrote various stories about 9/11 and one year later, I still couldn't shake the lump in my throat or the tears in my eyes as I had to write about that day. Thank you for all who tried to call, and those that e-mailed your concerns. We had a rough day Tuesday because Nans brother Bill works a couple of blocks from the World Trade Center. Hes a financial counselor. His building was evacuated safely and a tugboat took him back to his family in New Jersey. We couldnt contact him or his family by phone until 9 pm because of communications damage at the WTC. Nan has no other surviving close relatives and the thought of her as the lone Ezzo was frightening. I heard a low flying plane as I exited my building at a little before 9 am. We live on Second Avenue at St. Marks in the East Village of Manhattan, about 1 mile as the pigeon flies from Ground Zero. The noise was odd but I probably didnt hear it as loud as I might because I listen to NPR every morning on my commute, and had headphones on. I was on my way to vote in the mayoral primary before catching the N or R train to Times Square, nearest my work. NPR reported the crash, I looked downtown, and sure enough smoke was billowing out of WTC1. I cant remember whether I voted before or after learning of the initial crash. The voting took minutes and the train to work was normal except for the news related to the crash, which was hard to maintain in the tunnels. There was one girl across from me, and it looked like she had been crying. I thought only that she had a fight with her boyfriend, or something like that. I called Nan from my cellphone and told her to put on the newsa plane crashed into the World Trade Center. I came to work and those who were there early, like me, gathered by a small TV and watched the live pictures. We were all really dumbfounded and shocked, but somewhat detached. No one was screaming or crying, yet. Our boss, Bill, gathered us at together and said we could go if we needed to get home to loved ones, or stay at his place if we could not get home (many folks live in Jersey, Brooklyn or Queens). I call Nan and tell her Im coming home. I ask her to close the windows, put the air on, and slip a tape into the VCR. I wish I had thought of that earlier when I called to alert her of the disaster. Just then, Moshe, an intern and photography grad student, comes in with 35mm professional film shot from a Nikon 200mm lens on his rooftop in Williamsburg, a section of Brooklyn that overlooks Manhattan across the East River. It contained shots of the second aircraft, frame by frame, crashing into WTC2. Immediately, my reaction was, You have to get this to AP! He asked if he should get it developed right away at a place near our building. I said, No way! Its too valuable. They might lose it, or it could become damaged. Dont trust anyone with that film. I called 411 (you can still use 411 here in NYC) and asked for the phone number of the Associated Press. I had information immediately connect my call by pressing 1. I spoke to someone in photography that said to get down there ASAP50 Rockefeller Center on the 5th Floor. Christie, our photo editor, then arrives at work after witnessing the tragedy on her commute across the Manhattan Bridge from Brooklyn. She comes with us and we take the fire stairs 15 floors to avoid waiting for the elevator. Its sidewalk rage kicked up a notch navigating the 20 or so blocks to Rock Center. I try calling Nan the whole way, but cell calls just arent going through. Traffic is snarled and barricades were going up. We get there just in time before the building closes to anyone without an AP ID. Moshe says it will take 12 minutes to develop the film; and they separate us and allow only him in the photo editing room. I am still listening to NPRfrom the walk uptown and in the AP building. The guard lets me call Nan to say Ill be late. Moshe comes back out and asks us for advice on how much to charge. They like at least one shot; we see it on the screen, already scanned. My only concern is that he get on page credit in any deal he strikes. I thought a green photog like Moshe might get $500 for a good shot. Christies experience says he should get $2,000 per image for exclusive rights. This means he cannot sell it again to another agency, or use it commercially. He may, however, use it for personal artwork. After these discussions, I thought he might take $1,500; but I warned him not to be greedy because his first objective is to get them to use it and give him credit. We all agreed, and he went back in with the executive photo editor at the New York News Bureau of the Associated Press. We felt like we were at ground zero of the news; watching monitors and listening to reporters bark soundbytes across the room. Keep the line opendo not hang up was often heard. Moshe comes out with a sheet of paper. Its a handwritten invoice totaling $10,000 for exclusive rights to the entire roll. He made a good contact for future work. He may check out the negs to print at school for his own use, and will receive a high-res CD of the roll. We were stunned. We walked home. I walked 60 blocks downtown (about 3 miles) and Moshe and Christie walked across the Williamsburg bridge back to Brooklyn (about 6 miles). Nans isnt even home when I arrive around noon. A note says she couldnt wait any longer and had to get outside. Shed be back in a half-hour. I am glued to the set. Nan arrives and we hold each other, and she tells me of her brother Bill, and the uncertainty. We cant call out, but can receive some calls. I can call out on my cellphone, but maybe one in ten tries. We go outside and get some pizza a few blocks away. Many businesses have TVs set up so passersby can tune in. I cant eat, and still have a nervous stomach today while writing this. Nan leaves a couple of messages at Bills house when we finally can call out. The rest of the day was spent anxiously watching the news and cleaning the apartment. Local calls and e-mail worked fine, so I spent time staying in touch with some of you. Around 9 pm, we reached Bill and hear hes okay. Much relief. I call into work to take the day off to spend with Nan, watch the news, and try to process this tragedy. Nan goes to the gym as usual, and I spend more time trading stories with friends and family. Jill tells me of someone who saw $100 bills floating down from the sky. Some vault must have burst open and money flew with millions of other papers across the East River into Brooklyn. She picked up nine bills. Colleagues Brian and Ron, stranded in Manhattan, rented bikes to pedal across the George Washington Bridge into Jersey where family met them. My friend Barb used her brothers status as a NYPD cop to gain access to the rescue effort and took pictures. I went out during the day to look for a New York Times. Again, I wish I had thought of that earlier too. The air was acrid, but I did wear a cheap painters mask. Since no deliveries were made below 14th Street, my neighborhood was empty of the first issue reporting the terrorism. I traveled north to 14th, but a cop assured me that all stores were sold out, since all downtowners had to travel uptown to get one. I called friends on Long Island and Brooklyn to pick one up, but all stores sold out quickly. Jill is saving hers for me. At night I go out once more and the air is better. I spend the entire day training someone, and for the first time, the radio is not on. A major project Im art directing and designing is a 52-book series of state almanacs, including D.C. and Puerto Rico. New YorkThe Empire State was the prototype, and will be among the first ten books printed. I spoke with the editorial director about needing a conference call with the client to discuss how well incorporate these events into the series, which is aimed at fifth graders. Questions such as how well show the skyline; how well tell the U.S. and state timelines; what detail in pictures will we show. We have an unique opportunity to communicate this to children; how will we do that? I am reminded of when I worked at Holt, Rinehart and Wilson (a large textbook publisher) and they had to rewrite the social studies books before printing to include the impeachment of President Clinton. You can imagine its not easy to tell to six graders. When I get back home, we watch more news, and have a relatively quite night. I read the Times I picked up near work. Streets below 14th are reopened to Canal Street today. I bought a Times on the corner. Subways are running in my neighborhood, and I took a normal commute to work. Yesterday, I walked a couple of miles to work. Boss Bill gathered everyone together to give thanks, have a moment of silence during a group hug, and sign a card to deliver to our neighborhood firefighters, along with sandwiches and fruit. Dozens of NYCs bravest died from our station house here in the Garment District. Our boss encouraged us to answer e-mails, phone calls, and take our time processing the tragedy. Our clients have also understood, and offered support and extended deadlines. I am coming in this weekend to make up some of the work lost. Nan and I have home improvements planned for the weekend, and well probably take Peanut to the park, as usual. Ive got over 24 hours of news from about 9:45 am Tuesday. I was unable to fly back to Michigan, after 9-11 I did not want to fly, until I had to go home and help my parents. My father is now in an assisted living environment and Mom lives near him in a senior apartment. I was glad to find the new planes are well pressurized and very secure. When I first got settled in Arizona I helped out with the Emergency Response Team. And assisted with the National Night Out. We do not meet as much as we used to. And many people have gone in different directions. I live my life to the fullest and love everyone I meet. I believe we are all connected. Regardless of our background or religious beliefs. Tell us your story: I'm a 15-year-old high school student, so on September 11, 2001, I was making my breakfast and the sack lunch I was going to take to school. By chance, I turned on the radio. The first thing I heard was "It's been confirmed, a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center." Now, I hadn't ever heard of the WTC before, and the only thing I knew of that had to do with world trade was the riots that had happened in Seattle a few years earlier. Seattle, as some of you know, is about an hour and a half from where I live. So, thinking they were talking about Seattle, I raced upstairs to wake up my still sleeping mom. She, of course, knew what they were talking about (The WTC, I mean) We turned on the TV and watched, shocked, as the second plane smashed into Tower 2. Mom just stared at the screen, shocked, and said "This looks like something out of a bad Independence Day movie." By the time I left for school, the Pentagon had been hit and the first tower had fallen. At school, we cried and comforted each other. The TVs stayed on all day. I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life. No one knew what would happen next, if another attack would occur. Names of possible targets sprung up: Sea Tac Airport, buildings in Seattle, the Golden Gate Bridge, LAX, the nuclear power plant near Walla Walla. When the school day ended, I raced home and turned on the TV. All my life, I have never felt such a feeling of helplessness. As I'm involved in a lot of theater, I know quite a few people in NYC, some via the Internet, and for all I knew, they could have been dead, and I had no way to reach of them. When my dad came home, he found me curled up on the couch, just staring at the screen. I was so numb, I couldn't even cry. That night, as I expressed my frustrations of being helpless and wanting to do something, he drove me to Wal-Mart, where we bought rolls of red, white, and blue ribbon. I spent that night making patriotic pins and passed them out September 12 at school. (Today, September 11, 2002, I am proud to say that almost everyone I gave a ribbon to was wearing it.) I sent one to our city mayor and received a thank you. I sent one to the President and the First Lady, and was surprised to actually get a personal answer later in March. I also went on the Internet later that night on September 11 and sent out an e-mail to all my friends, telling them I was worried and that I hoped they?d reach me soon. After three days, I had heard from all of them and found out that one had sustained a fractured wrist and had to be treated for smoke/dust inhalation, and that her father had been killed. My friends and I rallied together around her, sending her e-mail greeting cards and, in one case, virtual flowers. But the rest of them were alive and unhurt. On September 11, 2001, I saw my country and home attacked. But on September 11, 2001, I saw Americans prove we will band together, to overcome all obstacles placed in our path. I watched Americans come together and stand strong, showing the world that they can not bring us down. We are the United States of America, and united we stand, one nation, under God, forever. To anyone who thinks they can destroy us and our pride, I say this- Fat chance. To those who thought they could hurt us through the attacks- Watch out. We will find you and you will pay for what you have done. And to all victims of September 11, we want you to know: We will never forget.
