Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I'm a US Army widow, whose husband served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. My parents both are veterans of WWII. To say I am pro-military is an understatement. However, I've never lived personally during catastrophic times, other than the unpopular war: Viet Nam. I am a "baby boomer", born in 1949. Upon visualizing these live terrorist attacks on television, like most others, we were in shock and could not comprehend what we were seeing. And, unlike previous generations before me, I knew my experience was undeniably different in that this was the first attack on American soil in the history of our nation by foreigners. History was in the making and I was living through it. Aware of the politics and the "lack of rules of engagement" perpetrated by religious fanatics, it became clear to me that this will not be a conventional war and that the forthcoming events in human history will be unprecedented. I thought of the Crusades of early centuries, thinking of all those who died in the name of Christianity. Was this so different? Yes, the enemy succeeded in planting the seeds of fear in me. However, the dynamic of a united front amongst my fellow Southern Americans {I'm a Yankee living in the southern US}, the dynamic of a united front, comradeship, and solidarity, moved me emotionally. Living in the South now [even after 25 years] made me feel a belongingness to my people despite our different origins at these critical endless moments. Our pot has melted and I am better for it, at the price of aggression, destruction and loss of innocent life. When God closes a door, He always opens a window. We are a people strong in spirit and determination. Thank God for George W. Bush, able President of the United States. I cannot imagine his democratic challenger, Al Gore, being capable of handling this horrific situation other than giving platitudes and being totally impotent in the face of the magnitude of our coming challenges. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: During a coffee break from a training class given by my job, I saw the first news reports of the tragic events in New York. Having been born and raised in Queens, NY I had been to the WTC and surrounding area countless times. I was absolutely silent but completely glued to the TV screen from the time the first plane hit. I immediately recognized the castrophic enormity these events had as they unfolded. I remember praying and calling my Pastor because I knew I needed to fill my spiritual being. Although I was able to get in touch with my immediate family I also prayed for the families of all the people that were not going to see their loved ones again. I felt this overwhelming sense of grief and despair for all the families and not just my own. My co-workers went back to their classes and I was unable to understand, how they didn't understand, that history was changing right before our eyes. The class instructor just continued as if nothing was happening. That really hurt me because we have to learn that this world is so much bigger than our individual lives. After seeing the news reports that night, the instructor left me a voice mail apologizing for her actions that day. She said she now realized why I was so upset but she did not have a perspective on the situation until watching the news reports and hearing of all the damages and loss of life. My roommates boyfriend came charging in my room talking about people hijacking airplanes. He was a pilot for Frontier Airlines at the Denver International Airport. He wasn't sure if he had to go to work that day or not. I finally turned on the tv to see the buildings collapse. To this day, April 8 2003, I am fascinated with stories of the heroines of that dreadful day. Tell us your story: i was just getting up at 12 and i found out later that day that it happened before then but as i turned on the tv is when i found out what happened and it took away my breath for what seemed like hours. i couldnt even stand. i thought at that moment that the Lord came back and took every one but me and i was terrified. i cried for hours and watched in terrer as the story unfolded even more. as the hours went by i seen things that i never imagined would ever happen here but i did see a country come together with a strength that hasnt been seen for a long time and i seen a president rise up and take charge. even after a year i still cant imagine the devastation that it has made. yea i am still thankful that i am alive but i am still sadden at all those family and friends that lost loved one in the plans and the pentagon and the towers and i am sorry for all the countiers that lost peole in this great tragedy. i am also even more thankful for all the police officers and fire firters and the paramedics. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 began like any other day for me...I dressed and drove to Belleview High School, where I was working as a secretary in the Media Center. At the time the first plane crashed into the tower of the World Trade Center, I was in the office to pick up some things for the Media Center. Along with several guidance counselors and secretaries, I watched in horror as the first plane struck. We all thought it was some sort of bizarre accident...I remember running back across the campus to the Media Center to turn the television on to CNN. Within a very few minutes, the second plane struck the other tower. We watched in disbelief as the commentators pointed at the smoke and flames that now billowed from both towers. Students filed out of classrooms as the bell rung for classes to change...some stayed in the Media Center to gather with the Media Specialists and myself to watch this awful story unfold. By the time the third plane struck the Pentagon, it began to feel like it might be the end of the world! Many students now filled the Media Center...watching, crying, some of them hugging friends who had relatives in the Towers, some praying quietly. I ran to the phone to call home and let my husband know what was happening. I asked him not to tell my 14 year old daughter, wanting to explain to her myself, not wanting her to be afraid without me home to hold her. My husband could not believe what I was telling him...we quickly finished our hurried conversation so that I could return to the news. I cannot describe the horror I still feel when I close my eyes...I can still see the images of the planes crashing into the buildings, the people jumping from windows, the faces of the people as they ran from the area. As the towers fell, my tears did also...and as I stood there weeping, the Pledge of Allegiance began to play over the school's loudspeaker. My librarian was so overcome that she could not lead the students in reciting the Pledge. I was barely able to speak past the lump in my own throat. Never had those familiar words meant so much to me. In the days that followed, the Media Center's television was constantly tuned in to CNN so that we could participate, from a distance, in the memorial services, public addresses and prayer vigils that occurred in the wake of these horrendous attacks. Today, I prayed for all of the families that lost loved ones in the attacks, to find peace and healing, to never forget that in the darkest days of America's recent history, we saw the light of America shine its very brightest...in the heroes who perished saving the lives of others, in the courage that made America great. I got on the bus at 7am, got to Newark Airport, got on the plane just like I always do. I never made it to my destination and was grounded in North Carolina. I got home by driving back to NYC. The people along the way were just so amazing and supportive. I will never forget it. When I went through my receipts I accumulcated after the trip, there was one that stood out. It read "5 World Trade Center - 6:30am 9/11/02". I bought a muffin before I got on the bus. I kept the receipt. I live 5 blocks from the World Trade Center in New York City in an area called Tribeca. If you don't know it, there is a certain spot you can stand on West Broadway and if you look north you see the Empire State Building and if you look South you see the WTC. It is particularly gorgeous at night. Like stars winking at you. My apartment is just at that spot. I cannot express to you how empty my spot is now at night. I miss my twin pals winking at me. As the clock-radio started up at 6 a.m. (Pacific), and the news started its 15-minute broadcast, I crawled out of bed to get ready to catch the bus at 8 a.m. As the newscast came to an end, the announcer suddenly broke into the closing music to tell of the attacks. I don't have a television, so I kept the radio on, of course, and my eyes nearly dropped from my head when I stopped in at my neighbour's house on the way to the bus stop and saw the live feed on their television. I was watching at the moment the towers came down. I was knocked almost off my feet, winded and breathless. Then over the next few days, seeing no airplanes in the sky was extremely eerie. To be in a conflict resolution course at the time seemed slightly ironic. I'm glad Canada was helpful to the United States citizens who were stranded at airports across the continent. He explained about the planes hitting the WTC and that it was no accident. I was mortified. I kept thinking, "I was just there." (My family went to New York City the summer before for vacation. I stood on top of the WTC and looked over to the Statue of Liberty in awe. This made those people whose lives were lost so much more real to me.) I was in my office working on a project, when a co-worker came in and said a small plane had hit the World Trade Center. I really didn't think much about it, assuming as most people did that it was an accident. I had no radio or TV, so kept on working as usual. After the second plane hit, my mom called me and we conferenced my aunt and my sister, who worked in the building next door. As my mom watched the TV, she filled us in on what was happening. I could not believe my ears. I started to feel a panic come over me and all sorts of wild thoughts were flying through my head. Is this the end? I pictured every city in the country being attacked. It's hard to describe what many of us were feeling that day--it seemed absolutely nothing was safe and we didn't know what would hit next. Even though we were in Ohio, we felt just as vulnerable as everyone else--especially when there were reports that a hijaaked plane was flying over Cleveland. I had visions of my daughter's school being attacked, the building I was in being attacked, and everything in between. My mother then informed us that flight 93 went down in Pennsylvania. I knew instantly what had happened--that the Americans on that plane had found out about the WTC and brought it down, not letting it anywhere near its target. God bless those people! How courageous! NEVER AGAIN! If we're going to die, we're going to die, but we can stop you from killing more, they seemed to be saying. Then followed erroneous reports that car bombs were going off in front of the White House, and more. Armageddon it seemed to me--this may be the end. Now here's where my story turns cold. After talking with my family members on the phone for some time, I walked to another office where some of my co-workers were to discuss the events. Unfortunately, and much to my amazement, it was still "business as usual". Everyone was working on this stupid project and saying "we have to get this done". Now I ask, a year to the day later, was that project important? Did it really matter in the great scheme of things? I can't even remember what the project was. Upper management had the same reaction. Basically, the message was, get back to work. I couldn't believe it. How could I concentrate? I went back to my office, sat down, and cried. Somehow, I made it through the day (refusing to do any real work--they could make me be there, but they couldn't make me concentrate), and was finally able to go home, 8 hours later, to finally see the events on TV. It was worse than I had imagined. Adding insult to injury, the company acted even worse the following day. Why didn't I call in sick? The company was a consulting firm, and several of our associates worked in downtown Columbus for city government and had been evacuated the day before. The vice-president of the company sent out an e-mail to everyone saying that since they were evacuated, they lost billable hours and were expected to make them up! If that doesn't take the cake. I could not believe the crass inhumanity of those people, and I started looking for work elsewhere shortly thereafter. I am happy to say that I am out of that inhuman place, where people were treated solely as commodities. A year later, do those billable hours really matter? Does the project that was so important really matter? No, it does not. What matters is that thousands lost their wives, husbands, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, and friends that day--and the rest of the country will remember THAT forever. A friend of mine walked in and said that a plane had hit the world trade center, my teacher who was the former assistant football coach, didn't believe him and decided to make a bet. He said that he would turn on the television, and if the student was wrong he owed the teacher ten push ups, and if the student was right he would do ten pushups. Unfortunately the student was wrong. Then we spent the period watching the news, and we witnessed, the second tower, the pentagon, and the pennsylvania tragesy's. The rest of the day was surreal, things seemed less important, and they still do today. September 11th taught me to have fun in life and to live in the moment. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in my condo in Utah and I was getting ready to go to school. I was a senior at Brigham Young University and was not totally acclamated to the United States culture as I had recently returned from a mission in Santiago Chile where I had lived for a year and a half. Things that are commonplace to normal Americans were still very much a luxury to me. My friend called me and alerted me to the intensity of the news at which time I moved to the television where I could see the events. As a political science major, a plethora of events rushed to mind but I remember the one thing that permeated my being is that there must be a reason. I went to my first class of the morning, Constitutional Law. My professor was there but seemed to be too dumbstruck to teach us. He said the most profound thing that I could have imagined him say. He said "I am a political scientist but I can not imagine myself teaching the theory behind politics when history is making something even the finest political minds could not have predicted." I went to a commons area at the university where thousands of students stood in an erie silence as they watched and listened to the news. I listened as classmates of mine called home to DC or virginia, just getting the news and hoping all was well and I realized how grateful I was that I live in a nation where family still means something, where we really could stand shoulder to shoulder, and where I had the religious freedom to attend a christian university where we are still allowed to say one nation under God. I know that as long as we maintain that brotherhood that inspired men wrote into our constitution, we will maintain the strength that only love and unity can bring to this nation. I know this because I have lived abroad and I have seen what happens when brotherly love ceases. I am thankful that God was brought so much more prominently into our hearts and lives as a nation. I was so upset that me and my freinds got on our hands and knees and prayed that everyone in the school and in the crashes would be ok. We thought there was no one hurt but we were wrong there was someone hurt many people were hurt and even killed. I'm not sure why I'm writing this but I feel I should at least contribute something to this archive. Here is my story, then: At the time, I worked for Starbucks Coffee. I recall driving into work with the windows down and the music blasting on that day. I was in on the shift at 6:30. Our morning rush came in on schedule with all our regulars and their smiling (yet groggy) faces. The rush, which was unusually short for this day, ended at around 8:45. Then a big group of regulars (retirees) came in and sat down outside with their drinks. The attitude of everyone was pretty upbeat that day because of the gorgeous weather. I don't recall the exact time, but someone I had never seen before, and not since, came in and told us "A plane hit the world trade center" rather non-chalantly. I remember pouring his coffee and thinking about the plane that crashed into the Empire State Building back in the 40's (I had seen something about it on the History Channel once and it stuck in my head because of how horrific it was). I remarked about it and went back about the bussiness. For a few minutes. Someone else came in, wild-eyed, and asked if we knew what was going on. We told the person we'd heard and then they told us about the second plane. My manager went to the back and grabbed a small blue radio. We set it up next to the bar and huddled around it. After 9:45, our store ground to a halt... nobody was able to function on any level. I went outside to smoke. The retirees that sit out front asked me what was wrong. Appearently no one had told them. One, a Korean War vet, and a few others were World War II vets, were openly angry about it and they all started talking as I retreated to my car and it's radio. I sat down and listened. It's not like you had to search for a station. It was everywhere on the radios. I smoked and listened, my cigarette shaking in my hands. I wasn't sure if it was from anger, fear, or what. And then the first tower came tumbling down. I could phsycially feel something change about the parking lot I sat in on that day. The clouds passing by in the blue sky... I got out my car and a lady I'd never met before came running up to me and asked me if I thought she should pick up her child from elementary school. I stammered, not sure what to say. I eventually told her to leave the child at school because I wasn't sure what to tell her. When I came back inside, the store was totally desolate except for a few State Dept. exployees who were talking about it at the counter. I don't quite remember when we heard that the Pentagon had been hit. There were all sorts of things being said on the radio and we only got snippets of it due to bad reception. But it was pretty appearent that it was bad. Real bad. Eventually, this lone straggler came walking in in his Navy uniform, all smiles. He was a semi-regular so we all knew him. He came up and says "Why so glum? What's wrong?" We all looked at him, incredulous. "Haven't you heard the radio??" "No. I have a CD player in my car. Why?" "You don't know?!" "No! What's going on?? I woke up late for work and decided to sleep-in!" "The Pentagon and World Trade Centers have been hit!" "Hit?! With what?" "Someone crashed airliners into them." He turned and ran out the door, yelling "I work at the Pentagon!" I later found out he had been spared due to his inability to set his alarm clock correctly. At 11:45 our store got a call from the district manager. To protect their employees, Seattle was shutting down every store from Georgia to Boston. So we began cleaning half-heartedly and walked out. The first thing I heard was a jet engine and I looked into the sky expecting to see fear embodied by a passnger jet. Instead I saw a pair of USAF F-16C's blasting East towards DC. I remember thinking that I had never felt so helpless in my whole life. I drove to my friend Chris' house. He and I had been part of a USAF Search and Rescue unit called the Civil Air Patrol. We were put on alert and told to stay close to the phone. There, I saw my first televised images of the the hell was happening to my country. I was enaraged just from watching TV. That was another new thing for me. I sat for a long time before my mom called me and we confirmed we were okay. I spent the rest of the day at that house waiting for an alert messege. I will remember that day until I die. And since that day, I have looked to the sky every time I heard a plane fly over. The silence of the skies (the FAA grounded all aircraft) for the following two days was almost like a 48 hour memorial service. God be with all the families who were directly effected by that day. While driving back to work, I heard on the radio that a plane had hit the world trade center. I assumed it was a small private plane that had lost control. By the time I arrived back at work, word was out that it was a commercial plane that had hit. My coworkers and I were scrambling to the computers to see who could log on first to the internet for more information. One of my friends turned on his radio. We sat huddled around the radio waiting for the computer to show details of the events. Then we heard a second plane crashed into the other tower in New York, then moments later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon, then a while later a plane crashed in Pennsylvania. It felt like the world had gone crazy and this was the end. I remember seeing the images on the computer of the crash of the twin towers and crying for those poor people and their families. It was a very scary feeling - like something unknown was attacking, and we couldn't stop it. I feared for my family. My two boys were at school, and my husband had gone to the grocery store with our daughter. I was frantic when I couldn't get him on the phone. I called my sister, no answer (she was at the same grocery store as my husband) - both totally unaware of what had happened. I then tried my parents - no answer. They were out for the day. I remember feeling very paniced and couldn't wait to leave work. We watched in horror as the twin towers can crashing down and the images of the people running for their lives. It was very scary. When I did go home that day after finally talking to my family members, I hugged my kids so tight I never wanted to let go. My son, who was in 6th grade, came home and fell apart in my arms crying. He was so scared. My husband and I reassured him that things were under control. My husband then had to go to work. My son didn't want him to go. He was afraid that if we had to evacuate, we'd lose dad. I assured him we would wait for him or meet him at a designated point. His fears were never really calmed until we made plans for an evacuation and I packed a bag full of the things we would need to take with us. We live in Windsor Locks, Connecticut right near Bradley International Airport. It was very eery and too quiet that night as all planes were grounded. We sat outside with our neighbors and lit candles, raised our flags, and prayed. I'll never forget that day. The day the world changed and Americans reunited as one. We turned it on just in time to see the second plane hit. A big gasp fell across the room. I don't think we have been that silent in years. What was happening? Was there going to be more planes crashing in different places? Were we going to die? So many questions ran through my mind. We watch the TV for about 20 minutes then had to go to our next class. This was the time of the day that i always met my mom in the hallway. I ran down to wait for her just to see her reaction (nothing is ever really that bad unless your parents are upset too). She had tears in her eyes as she grabbed me. I've never been held that close. We stood there and talked for a few minutes about it and then had to go to class. The whole school watched it for the rest of the day. I remember driving home and thinking how weird it looked outside. It would never be the same again. We were no longer safe. As soon as my dad got home that night, our family circled up and we prayed together. It seemed that was the most important thing to do. Weeks went on and every night we would sit in the living room and watch the news. Slowly things started dieing down and we didn't think of it as much anymore. Even today no one really talks to the kids about it. Its kind of like they are trying to hide it or something. I feel it should be something that we talk about to our children everyday and make them understand what happened. That someone came into our country and tried to take away our Freedom and Security. Being originally from ny my heart was broken i just could not believe someone or something could do this to our country.It was one of the scariest moments of my life. It made me want to just thank god for all he has given me and made me realize that life is to short to let anything slip away. My heart and prayers went out to all involed in the WTC bombing and to this day,a year later it still does and i guess always will. This has changed our country,it has brought people closer together and has made this nation stronger then ever. I will always be grateful that i am a AMERICAN and a proud one at that.
