We have always read about these incidents, but we have never fully grasped the concept of living through one of these tragedies. Now as we find ourselves in this place, we must give thanks that we have been spared from this tragedy. When I found out about the attacks I was horrified, I sat in my classroom and watched the buildings fall. I told myself that I have to remember this moment, because I will one day be telling this story to my children. When I heard that a plane had hit the Pentagon I burst out crying because my brother, Jack, who was in the army was stationed in WAshington D.C. The next 24 hrs. were torture for my family, we didn't know where Jack was and if he was safe. During that time I felt the emotions that the people who lost their loved ones felt. Luckily my brother was not in the Pentagon during the attack, but because of this attack he will soon be sent to the Middle East, and I fear for him greatly. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work for Morgan Stanley and had started work at 8am that day. Everything was rolling along as usual when all of a sudden around 8:45 we started hearing a sound like someone was pelting the side of a house with snowballs. It was hitting along the windows and we saw thousands of pieces of paper flying by. At first we thought it was some kind of joke like someone had dumped confetti off the observation deck on the roof, but then we saw that a lot of this paper was on fire. Next thought was that a bomb had gone off either in the other building or in ours and all of us started heading for the stairwells. At 2 flights per floor we were looking at 136 flights of stairs covering about 800 feet, a lot when you want to be out of the building RIGHT NOW. I was surprised and happy to find no one panicking, everyone was filing down the stairs semi-calm. It took us about 15 minutes to get down to the 44th floor where the security desks and main elevators were. We had flat screen monitors on the walls in the lobby normally showing the financial news but right now they were all showing tower 1 next to us on fire. We were being told that possibly a small plane had hit tower 1 and that our tower was secure and that we were as safe here as on the ground. All I knew was that I was still 500 feet up and that was 500 feet too high. I think it was a group decision that we go for the stairs again. I know that some people stayed and that others went back up to their offices feeling the building was secure. My family is glad I didn't make that decision. We had only gone down a few flights of stairs when there was a load rumbling explosion and the whole stairwell shook violently, some people falling down, I was lucky to be holding on to the rails. The worst part was that the building started tipping sideways, swinging sideways, I was sure the other building fell into us and we were tipping over. I closed my eyes and waited for the floor to go out from under me and to die. The building stopped at an angle and moved back the other way, It rocked back and forth for a few more seconds then stopped. That was when people almost started to panic, we all yelled at each other to stay calm and started counting the floors out loud, 39,38,37. We continued down, I can't explain the relief we all felt getting to the ground. The police were there to guide us down into the underground mall. I was upset that they weren't letting us just go out the door on the ground level, but we didn't know that debris and bodies were raining down out there. We were escorted out through the basement and out onto the street from under building 5. My cell phone didn't work so I started looking for a shop that would let me use their phone. It was then that I looked up and saw both buildings on fire. At that time I couldn't understand how ours had come to be that way. All I knew was that the buildings were a quarter mile high so I needed to be a quarter mile away if it came down. I didn't know until I saw it on TV in one of the stores that a second plane had hit us and that it was a terrorist attack. There were groups of people, women screaming and crying "oh my god they're jumping" It took me a few minutes to believe my eyes that the debris I saw falling wasn't glass or concrete, they were people. I eventually found a shop where I could make calls and assure my family that I was OK. I had been out of the building about 20 minutes when there was this load rumble and people were yelling that the building was falling. All of us in the street started running. I was glad I thought to get that far away because it gave me a good head start. I figured that the debris path was going to come straight up the streets so I zigzagged between a few buildings until I found the lobby of an apartment block and got in there. People were coming down from the apartments asking us if we needed any water or help. A group of us stayed in there until the dust cleared enough to breath and then I started to make my way far enough to where I might be able to catch a train. To make this long story short, I was able to get home around 5 o?clock that day. I'm happy to see a web site like this that hopefully will keep future generations from ever forgetting what happened here. My class was in the middle of science, and my teacher turned on the t.v. abd said something very tragic had happened. We all watched the second plane hit the World Trade Center. It was a big shock to everyone. Then we watched the re runs of the first plane hitting the first tower. It was very horrifying to watch. Tell us your story: I was 4 months pregant with my third baby.My husband and i were at my sisters house playing games all night the night before so we just stayed because it was so late. Between me and my sister and my other friend that was there there was 6 children and two pregant people.around 9 am the kids woke up and of course wanted to watch cartoons. I turned the tv on and only wish now that there was cartoons on that day. The only thing i seen was smoke and then that is when the second plane hit. It was devasting. I was only 18 at the time and my husband was 20 so we never really remembered anything about Dessert Storm or really any kind of war so we were really astonished. Everytime I see pictures of the WTC collapsing, I get chills running down my arms and shivers throughout my body. My day started at 7 a.m. At the time I was working 2nd shift, but had just happened to wake up at 7 a.m. and watch the news. Nothing was going on...I listened to the weather report, sunny, highs in the 60s. Nothing special, just like any other day. I ended up falling asleep, with the t.v. on, and woke up to my clock/radio coming on just before 9:30 a.m., hearing a voice saying "both towers have now collapsed", and in a misty daze, I thought to myself, "what towers?" I go to the living room to see nothing but coverage of the terrorist attacks that morning. I couldn't believe in a matter of 2 hours the turmoil that had begun to unfold. I thought to myself, "Oh my God!" I quickly called my friend at work, and she already heard about it, and couldn't believe it. I called my other friend where he was working, and he answered the phone, "I know." I'm thinking to myself, "Are we at war?!" It seems that it wasn't too long after that we were assuming Osama bin Laden was behind this. The reason why I still get chills is because it was June of 2000 when my friend Jamie and I (the girl I first called on the morning of 9/11/01) flew out to New York for a long weekend. We stayed with a friend of mine. We toured the WTC and took many pictures of it. We were in awe of the towers. I distinctly remember the marble floors and escalators leading up from the ground floor. I remember a security guard standing at a table or desk about 50 feet down from where we were standing in the lobby, just laughing and joking around with others in the lobby. Now I wonder if he was working there on that day? I guess one of the bigger shocks, if not the biggest, is how ABC news went into the second tower just moments before it had collapsed, only to show on television the dusty, dirty sight it was inside the second tower. The scenes that they showed are very spooky for me, because I have pictures of exactly the same places where they were standing moments before the building had collapsed. All I can say is, and I'm sure everyone else can relate, not "how could this have happened", but "Why this happened?" Being there and having friends in New Jersey, I'm sure life there has changed even more than here. We were in a state of shock for days here, then after slowly sinking in, we had that empty-feeling in our stomachs, sort of like knots tying up in our guts. It was awful. It was the worst feeling. The days after were twice as hard as the day itself...not knowing if we would wake up the next morning in a safe place anymore. I'm glad the U.S. is taking an agressive force in Afghanastan. I just wish we could find Osama and just put him out of his misery. This man should have been stopped years ago when he/his followers were linked to the bombing of the WTC. I came in to check my messages and there on the machine was one from my husband at Kings Bay, GA. He wanted to know what the TV was saying about the terrorist attacks. I thought, "What attacks"? I'm writing this email to share stories from around the country that I collected by sending out an email to UCEA members (colleges and universities across the country) requesting what their college campuses were doing in response to the tragedy. When I arrived at work at little after 9am, I had a conversation with a friend in the parking garage about the plane burining in Tower 1 that we'd heard about on the radio. I said, "I hoped it only affected those in the floors above the crash --it sounded like it hit pretty high up." "Are you kidding?" she said, "That whole building is GONE. There's no way they can put a fire out like that." I was startled by her certainty and said, "Do you really think so? Like The Towering Inferno?" I went upstairs. I found my coworkers clustered around a smalltv and learned that the second tower had been hit. I saw flames/smoke coming out of the White House's Old Executive Office Building. I don't know where the media got those pictures, because later we were told it was "false reports" of fire in the white house, but I talked to others who said they also saw the smoke and flames on television and wondered how they could've shown such pictures if it was false. After the I saw the plane burning in the Pentagon on tv, I told my husband and my father who were both calling me at the same time, that I was getting our kids from their daycare at 20th & M, "just a few blocks from the White House," I kept thinking. I told their daycare teachers about the Pentagon attack, and they started calling other parents to pick up their kids. I nervously drove my kids home while listening to--what turned out to be a false--radio news report of a bomb going off at the state department and the news that another plane had crashed in PA. (I was half a block from the State Department just as the radio informed me that a bomb had gone off there and could see blue police lights ahead. It was like something out of a movie. I did a u-turn in the middle of 23rd street to change my route and got into the bumper to bumper traffic in Georgetown. The weather was still beautiful and everyone had their car windows open. I made eye contact with other drivers--all of whom were being more polite than usual as I tried to cut in. Everyone was listening to news reports rather than music and everyoe had serious expressions on their faces rather than the usual irritation at the other drivers. My children were oblivious-- my 3 year old was excited that we were going home less than an hour after being dropped off and that I was letting her eat potato chips so early in the morning. She talked about wanting to go to the pool. Though it usually only takes me an hour to pick up the kids and get to our home near Tyson's Corner in Virginia, this day it took me two hours. When we pulled in, my husband ran out to greet us and burst into tears of relief that we were home safely (he never did make it to work at all that day). My father (a retired Navy commander who used to work in the Pentagon) called us also in tears and came over, just so he wouldn't have to be alone on such a terrible day. We tried to get in touch with relatives in NY only to find that the lines were jammed. When we finally did speak to them we found that THEY were more worried about US. The one positive thing that happened that day was that our neighborhood pulled together, sharing our stories and concerns. One neighbor who works at USA TODAY could see the Pentagon in flames from her office window. Our "neighborhood watch" neighbor had a bbq that night in the cul-de-sac with home-made icecream "because none of us wanted to be alone." We all watched TV all day long and when I took the kids to the park I even brought my sony walkman so I could listen to the news. I kept hugging and kissing my kids. It was a day after my son's 3rd birthday and we were outside cleaning up the yard from his party the day before. I had a feeling something was wrong and I came in the house to see if anyone had called while I was outside and I seen that nobody called. I started to walk to the door to finish outside and I felt a sudden urge to watch T.V. Mind you I am not a television watcher and I am not aware of current events going on. But on that tragic day I turned to the CNN channel for some reason to only see that the 1st Trade Center Tower had been hit. I stood in amazement as to what was going on in our nation. Then suddenly the 2nd tower was hit again, by a terrorist attack we were told. I thought that the first one was an accident due to air traffic control and this was something simply accidental. But as the nation was watching Im sure I wasnt the only one feeling like I needed to rush and grab my children from there schools, embrace them and let them know that I am here to keep them safe. I immediately tried to phone my husband as I knew he was an Over The Road truck driver to tell him of the news. But for some reason he wasnt answering the phone. The scariest part for me was the thought of knowing he was in New York delivering a load. I tried for hours to reach him, and of course he was using a Cellphone. I contacted all of the family to warn them that he may of been involved in this one way or another. I contacted our local wireless carrier in desperation on locating my husband. I finally reached him and let him know I was so worried, thinking I would have to raise our 5 children without him. I cried and he listened as I explained to him what had happened. While all of this is going on on television he is reassuring me he is fine and that the company he was working for had relocated him to Georgia and that he was safe and away from harm. I immediately called the schools where my children attend and told them I was coming to get them from school. The night of this terrible attack we as a family prayed for those lost in those awful and horrific acts of terrorism, knowing there we many lives lost and many lives changed forever. Nothing can ever take the feeling of loss away from those who had no direct effect in Sept. 11 loss of man, but we can always remember those innocent people who died for our country. We have many heroes in our nation and the had thing to deal with as a nation is that we will all have to eventually go on and live our lives. As easy as it is to say it may be much harder for some to do. I was not in New York, Washington, or Pennsylvania on 9-11-01, but I feel as close to those people as I have never felt before. Trust me when I say I greive for the familys who lost mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, and friends and neighbors or our surrounding fire stations and police forces. Our deepest sympathy goes to all of the familys, and I pray that God will give you some closier to this act of terrorism. Tell us your story: As a third year college student in all typicality, I had hit the snooze button on my alarm clock several times, unknowingly drifting in and out of sleep through the last innocent morning in America. I finally got out of bed at around 10:00 and began straigntening my apartment here and there--with a full schedule and a part-time job, this morning was the only free time I'd have to clean before my mother's arrival the following day. I recall that the portable phone was resting on the open kitchen counter; I don't remember it ringing or saying "hello," but I do remember the tone of my father's voice when he told me to turn on the television. One of the towers had already fallen and I questioned if it had ever been there at all because I was afraid of that reality. I watched the second tower there, wounded against the clear sky. I would later site the irony in 100% visibility on the day when no one wanted to be looking down from the top of the WTC. I watched the tower fall on live television; it was like watching a lit fuse. Never had I felt so completely helpless and far away from the great city; I envisioned a million Americans standing at our televisions holding our hands out as if to say, "No," as we would had we watched a castle of playing cards fall to the floor beneath us after hours of building such a masterpiece. It was the most critical moment in my life--being able to do nothing, standing open-mouthed and holding a garbage bag of my college-girl trash. From then on I think America finally became interested in The News. Trying to make sense of this now, still in the same apartment in Chapel Hill and approaching my senior year, I wonder about the unity we have now as America contrasted with the unity we had before the attacks. I think about the American condition on the night of September 10th versus that condition on the night of September 12th--or even tonight for that matter. We may have been happy with our lives for the most part, petty social problems surrounding us, living in an ignorant bliss. Life was good and I was in college and the weather and the boys and the shopping in Chapel Hill were SO far out of this world that I was completely blind to problems outside those of my solitary life. The morning of September 11th transformed me from that person living in the far-away Chapel Hill to a person living in a bleeding America. We have gone on with our lives--those of us college-girls who lost no one personally in the tragedy--we go to bars and we make good grades and we keep buying the same perfume we wore before the 11th. Looking up and reading the stories of Carolina alumni who lost their lives in 9/11 makes me want to empathize a situation I cannot, but I try to imagine myself as the in-love fiance of one man killed on that day out of simply wanting to feel more in common with those who are grieving. As a single and unattatched young woman, I imagine feeling a love so great for someone and then losing him to something of this magnitude; I think about the last time he smiled at me or the vacation we just shared: it was beautiful and romantic and we were happy, having no idea that soon one of us would be taken away and the other one left here with the pain of memory and survival. So I believe that the three most unifying days between America and my life in Chapel Hill were the 10th, 11th and 12th of September. Together to some extent we shared a quiet night, the last innocent morning, and the beginning of a future that would want us to feel. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Well, my story is I was at work the morning of September 11th, 2001. I was a housekeeper at a motel, and the way I found out was I was having a break before I started work and a guest came to the office to get some coffee and said "Have you heard?" I said "Heard what?" He said, "A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center." My first thought was that is was a flying proceedure gone wrong. But when I tuned in to the t.v. I seen it for my own eyes. I was shocked. And then out of nowhere here came another one. I was scared cause I didn't know if I had family anywhere near it or involoved in it, and I still don't know if I had family involved. I found out a few months later that my father was there that day trying to deliver a truck load, he is a truck driver, and couldn't get through, and I thank GOD so much that he delayed my father cause if didn't then I would be grieving for my father right now. But instead I am grieving for everyone else who lost a loved one. I didn't know how to show or express my grief and my sadness except in one way which was to write a poem like I do every other terrible thing that happens in my life. I would like to share it with you out there and let you know that I sent it in to a poetry contest and it was inducted into the International Society of Poets. So, now millions will read my poem and remember 9/11/01. Here is my poem: ****** MY FEARS ****** As I sit here and wathc the news, I wonder if my kids will have lives to choose. How can someone be so evil, And kill so many innocent people? I wake up every morning filled with fear, As my eyes fill up with tears. I keep wondering how much time my family has left, Before we sunddenly meet our death. I spend everyday with my family for the best, Just in case it turns out to be our last. I am totally in fear for my children's lives, And hope they will get a chance to choose a wife. AMERICA is meant to be a land of FREEDOM, Not to be lived in with fear of our lives from terrorism. I watched as they showed over and over the planes hitting the towers. As that was happening a local station out here happened to be at the Pentagon and we watched live as the the reporter heard an explosion and saw construction workers running away. I also saw live the towers collapse. At this point I had to leave for work. It was the worst day I can possibly imagine. They closed work about 2 hours after I got there and allowed us to go home and spend it with our families. Even that first day I saw teenagers--no longer apethetic--standing along the road, waving flags; people take down the Confederate flags on their cars and put on American Flags; and banners hanging over highways. It was horrible, but it also brought out the best in our country. It gave me a new faith in America. God bless America and God bless all our soldiers fighting to defend it. He turned on the tv and there in front of me was the remains of the world trade center. I did not believe it at first. It seemed so unreal like a movie. How could someone do this. It only took a few seconds for this to hit home. I immediatly grabbed the phone and called my parents. They were busy trying to get a hold of my brother. He is stationed at the Naval base in Italy. It took about 2 hours to even get a call through to Italy. He was on lock down. They had him on the highest alert. They were briefing everyone for war. Fighter jets were going up every hour. While I was at home crying and feeling safer than him, I couldnt imagine what he was feeling. To be only 20 and having to prepare to go to war. Now it is 1 year later and he is being shipped out on an aircraft carrier heading to the middle east. My thoughts now are is he going to make it home. It seemed like hours but with-in 10 minutes my son called from the street outside the buildings and said he was heading home. I asked my mom what happened, but my mom only said that she didn?t know but an airplane hit the World Trade Center. As I continued to watch the TV I saw the second plane hit. I remember all the news anchors were dumbfound and didn?t know what to say, but after the second plane hit they realized it must have been some sort of attack. I also remember going to school and asking all my friends if they had heard what happened. During lunch my friend was desperately trying to contact her brother who was supposed to be released from service in that army that day, but instead they called him back. It all seemed so fake and surreal? I couldn?t believe it. When I went home all my brothers and sisters were there and we sat around the TV watching the news. During dinner that was all we talked about, while we were washing the dishes that was all we talked about? that was all we talked about for awhile. I remember watching the people jump out of the windows in the World Trade Center and my sister saying ?Oh my God, that?s horrible. It?s just awful.? It was so hard to believe what was happening? I mean, I couldn?t believe it. I think it was harder because I didn?t personally know anyone in New York and I was so far from the World Trade Center that it was just surreal. I didn't have class that day, so I thought I was going to be my usual routine , of laundry and clean my room. I looked at the tv, and heard some crazy news of someone crashed into the World Trade Center. I said what in the world, who can't fly a plane ?!? I then listened even more and realized that America was attacked. I couldn't believe it. Someone had come into out own country and used our own planes against us to kill innocent people. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I came to work that Tuesday morning later than the others in the office. As I sat down at my desk, my co-worker Tim walked up and began to tell a group of us how his wife called him and told him a plane had hit one of the towers. I thought it was odd news, but was not shocked b/c I didn't understand the magnitude of the event (didn't know size of the plane, didn't see pictures of smoke billowing out of the tower). Then Tim says, "and you won't believe this", his wife was watching the live news while talking to him on the phone, and told him as a 2nd plane was hitting the other tower! Maybe two seconds passed before all of us in the office got over our surprise and voiced the understanding that this had to be an intentional terrorist act. The funny thing was that Tim said this with a kind of bemused grin on his face. And I grinned back at him this way. It was the kind of grin you put on when an extraordinary event occurs that you just can't believe. At that moment, we didn't have a TV so none of us in the office had seen pictures of it, we didn't think much of the resulting fire, and didn't know how large the planes were. We just didn't fully realize that hundreds of people had just been slaughtered. Then the group started to theorize about what would happen. Somebody pointed out that there would be a fire and it would probably trap everybody above the point of collision. Slowly, as we thought about it more and got more details, we came to the realization of just how huge an attack this was, and how many people may have died and may still die. From this point on, not much work got done. Myself and the other computer-savvy folks started scouring the Internet for news information. Practically all of the news pages were unavailable since they were being flooded with requests. Finally one of us found a small local news page that was slow but accessible. Then we saw pictures of the smoking towers. I started calling friends and getting calls from friends--email just didn't seem to be an intimate enough forum for discussing the matter. I wanted to connect with people I knew, to hear their voice. One of my friends called, saying in depressed shock, "Can you believe what's going on?" He was at home watching TV. Then he said to me, expressing a very sad, resigned, and desperate feeling, "oh god it just fell." But I didn't appreciate what he was saying. I just assumed that maybe a top part of one of the towers had fallen off. I didn't fathom that the whole thing could collapse. I wouldn't find that out until a few hours later. At lunchtime, one of the head management told us he was heading home for a long lunch, which he doesn't normally do. We all understood that he was going home to be with his family. So I called my girlfriend and asked her to come home for lunch with me. People just wanted to be with those they love that day. (Probably even at that very early point most people had already started having their life's priorities rearranged--started to understand with greater clarity than most of us ever had before what's most important in life.) I will never forget sitting on the couch next to her, turning on the news, and first seeing a replay of the 2nd plane hitting. As that fireball flew out from the building, I felt that awful feeling knowing that hundreds of people had just instantly loss their lives by the deliberate act of some other. My girlfriend and I let out small gasps of shock and then sat there silent for a long time, watching the news coverage, holding each other. The emotional impact and magnitude of the event had finally settled in. When I saw that collision and fireball, 5% of me marvelled at how it was like an action movie. 90% of me felt that deep, monolithic and appropriate feeling of horror and grief for those who died. This was a feeling I'd never had before; it must be the kind of thing a soldier experiences on the battlefield. And the other 5% of me pondered how I--someone who'd grown up watching action movies and playing video games and had always revelled in the fake war and death so prevalent in our entertainment culture--experienced a reaction entirely different from when I watched those movies. And I was glad that this horrible event had exposed so clearly and definitively my true humanity, which is so often obscured in the entertainment-centric nature of our everyday lives. I was shocked when I saw replays of the towers collapsing. I didn't think that was possible. I just never considered the physics involved. When my friend had mentioned it earlier, I had assumed that the top part might have come off and slid off the top. Watching the thing crumble to dust gave me such a deadening feeling in the pit of my stomache. I felt like I couldn't properly feel the depth of emotion that was relevant to this event. I felt like there weren't any emotions that could reflect the depth of horror seen in those images. In the days following, my life changed, as so many others. I saw things in a different light. My priorities in life were rearranged for the better. My pride in my country was reawakened. And, above all, I stopped taking things for granted. My feeling in the days and weeks after the event was one of grief, confusion, but also pride. I didn't feel much anger; I felt something much stronger than that. I felt a steely resolve and grim sense of determination. One other change I've noticed in myself and others since 9/11 is a greater desire to understand the world. I read the international news with a passion now. And I know others who now, despite never having watched the news for anything before, keep tabs on the latest headlines. Because of Americans' reaction to 9/11, I'm optimistic for the future of my country. And I'm optimistic for the future of the world. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I WAS BABYSITTING FOR A FRIEND WHEN IT CAME ON THE TV THAT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER WAS HIT BY THE FIRST PLANE. I STARTED CRYING, I KNEW RIGHT THEN IT WAS A TERRORIST ATTACK. ALL I COULD THINK ABOUT WAS MY LITTLE GIRL,HOW MUCH I LOVED HER. SHE WAS TURNING 2 ON SEPT. 13, AND I COULDN'T THINK OF LIFE WITHOUT HER,BUT I ALSO THOUGHT TO MYSELF WHAT KINDA WORLD HAD I BROUGHT HER INTO. I WATCH THE TV FOR DAYS I COULDN'T TAKE MY EYES OFF IT!! FOR THE PAST YEAR ALL I COULD THINK ABOUT IS THE POOR CHILDREN WHO LOST A FATHER OR MOTHER ON THIS DAY. TODAY IS SEPT. 11 AND ONCE AGAIN ALL I CAN DO IS WATCH THE TV AND HUG MY LITTLE GIRL AND MY 8WEEK OLD SON AND THANK THE LORD FOR ALL HE HAS GIVEN ME, MY FAMILY , FRIENDS AND OUR FREEDOM TO BE IN THE USA. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11th, I turned on the TV shortly after the first plane crashed onto one of the towers. It must have been right before 9am. I had no idea what was going on. I was just about to get ready for work, when I found myself glued to the TV and in awe. My husband was on a business trip in LA and I was alone at home. I called him at around 9am and he told me that he was watching too. We didn't know what to think. At first, we thought it was an accident, but then we saw the second plane crash and the news reported the possibility of a terrorist attack. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the first tower collapse, both of us still on the phone, we were heart broken. We didn't think the towers would fall, we thought the top would just burn. So, I proceed to make calls to our family. My husband's dad lives in Queens, and I could not reach anyone in the NY area because all the NJ/NY lines were tied up. My dad works in DC, and no luck either. I got on the internet right away, and my sister in law who lives in DC, is on AOL IM - tells me she's scared because they won't let her out of her building. She works only a few blocks from the White House. She says the lines are busy and cannot get through to her family. I then call her mom and tell her she's ok. She didn't get home that day until late afternoon. Thank God for IM! I called work, to find out if people knew about this, my office mate and another friend said they were all listening to the news on the radio and that people had left work already and that the building was closing shortly. We live near the Jersey shore and this place called Union Beach is about 5 minutes away. On a clear day, you can see NYC from the small boardwalk. So 3 of us decided to go. We went there after the towers had already collapsed. We saw a lot of smoke and an intense fire going on. There were a number of people watching with us. It was very sad. I still cannot understand how these people could have done such an awful thing. My sympathies to all who were affected and those who lost loved ones. May God bless us all.
