<text>Man I remember jumping on my scooter and heading for the gym for another workout. As I entered the gym i saw alot of people standing and gazing at the T.V screen. I asked myself "why do these people come to the gym and watch movies" I then went into the change room changed and started my workout. As I was working out I saw on the screen a plane flying into one of the buildings. I then said "I must be daydreaming that just didnt happen" moments later they showed it again and I then said it must be a moving. It wasnt until I saw the second plane crash that I realized that something was seriously wrong. I was schedule to fly home in November and I remeber saying.."hell no, I am staying right here"...

<text>I had just gotten off the #7 train on my way to work in
Long Island City. As I was walking up the block I looked
towards my right and saw black smoke. I wasn't sure if they were the towers and I remember thinking " Oh my God there's a big fire in the building". I turned around and
asked the girl behind me if that was the twin towers. She
said yes, a plane had crashed into it. I said "what happened, was it an accident? She did not know.

A car passed by and the girl asked if there was more news
on the radio, on what had happened. We listened for about
one minute. I started walking to work which was about
2 1/2 blocks away. I could not see the towers anymore
because of the buildings. I walked past the work entrance
and headed up the block because I knew that I could see the towers there across the river. I was turning right
but I heard my boss calling me and telling me that making the left was a better view of what was happening. I could not believe what I was seeing. I tried calling my mom on my cell phone, it wasn't working.
We stayed there a while watching but then I received a phone call at work-it was mom- and I walked the 1/2 block to my job. Suddenly I heard that one of the towers fell. I thought "no that can't be true." I ran back outside to confirm to myself that it wasn't true. All I saw was a bigger black cloud along with smoke. I could see the antennae on the other building and I kept repeating to myself "when the smoke clears, the building will still be there" over and over again.
I returned back to my office because you really couldn't
see anything. Then we heard that the 2nd tower had fallen, I ran back out to see, thinking there is no way that this is happening. My heart sank when I looked and I couldn't see that antennae, only black smoke.
It was 10:30 am when I finally sat down at my desk. Work?
I can't remember if I was able to work. There was just a feeling of helplessness, numbness.
At noon my cousin Marcos called me and said that he would pick me up from work to get me home. I thought "Wow, my hero" We went to the 59 St bridge because his girlfriend Vanessa had to walk across the bridge from manhattan because there wasn't any kind of transportation to get home. It normally takes 40 minutes to get home by car. It took us 4 1/2 hours to get home and we were on the other side of the river where this terrible trajedy happened!
Finally at 4:30 pm I was home with my family.

I prayed and will still pray for everyone that was lost on that day and for everyone who lost someone. For all the cops, firemen and heroes. THANKS </text>

<text>On September 11th, 2001, I was at Barker Central School. Barker is out by Lake Ontario. I was in my sekent period study hall when my teacher got a phone call. He was in shock and didn't say anything at all. He just hung up the phone and turned on the television. The World Trade Center was smoldering with a lot of smoke. Then as we turned up the volume we had heard that a plane had been hijacked and had crashed into the north tower at 8:48 a.m. We had to go to our next class and my next class was Global Studies. When we got there we had heard that a second plane crashed into the south tower eighteen minutes later. Then a third plane was seen over the Pentagon and crashed down into the western part of the Pentagon. A fourth plane was forced down by the passengers in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. In all 266 people perished in the four planes and several others died elsewhere. When I got home my mother had heard something on this radio station and thought that they were just kidding around. Then my aunt called my mother and asked her if she had heard anything about the crashes. There were people jumping from buildings. People were fleeing from the scene like the world was coming to an end.
Some Americans feel they are in a war with an enemy they do not even know. Today there is a lot more security in the airports which is a good thing. When Osama Bin Laden does another stunt like this one we will be ready for him. I am glad that we got more safety in airports today. In the country of Afghanistan there are U.S. troops over there trying to kill off all of the terrorism in that country. If Osama Bin Laden is not afraid to die like he said on his video tape that was on national television then he should come out of hiding and fight like a man. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat, but they have failed. I thought I would never see someone or some country use airplanes as a missile to fly into a building and kill themselves and a lot of people. The estimated number of American's death from the terrorism that struck the World Trade Center, Pentagon and the people on the airplanes was about 3,200. I have thanks to all of the FDNY firemen and the NYPD police who helped out in this tragedy. This is a day I will never forget and no one should.

<text>"The Week the Air Stood Still"

Its hard to believe its been five years and people still ask me what I was doing on
September 11th, 2001. That question stirs up a lot of emotion for me as those events were just the beginning of a
new life for me, as an American, a pilot and a newlywed husband. My wife and I were married on Friday
September 14th at the end of that fateful week. I know a lot of people in this industry that have stories about their
experiences last fall. These are some of the events of what was supposed to be the happiest time of my life.
The week got off to a pretty normal start. Monday basically consisted of renewing my FAA First
Class Airmans medical exam and final preparations for my upcoming wedding at the end of the week (9/14).
Monday night it was business as usual. I couldnt wait to get to Indianapolis (IND) to share more of my wedding
details with my friends at work. I departed Cleveland (CLE) on time at 315AM. During the three hour layover in
Indianapolis things were very upbeat for a Monday while my co-workers and I discussed the events of my wedding
day.
The outbound load for the return trip home was heavy as usual, but nonetheless I was on my way
home to continue the countdown. What a beautiful day. Clear blue skies and excellent visibility allowing you to
see for miles. The mission was rolling along as well as could be expected. About thirty minutes out of Cleveland I
was monitoring the company frequency and heard several flights calling the ramp in Cleveland inquiring about
parking space. This was very odd since I was the only flight due to arrive there. The word coming down the radio
was that New York had a ground stop and no flights were coming or going from the area. The first thing I
thought was maybe hurricane / tropical storm Erin had blown back towards the coast causing weather delays. That
would have been a blessing given the events that followed.
Rumors of an airliner being hijacked in New York airspace began to litter the airwaves and ATC
began suggesting to all flights heading east to plan on an alternate airport. The ground stop now included Boston.
Soon came the strangest thing Ive ever heard in my fifteen years of flying. It was official, the situation of a
national emergency was relayed by ATC to all flights and everyone must land...EVERYBODY. All anybody knew
was that two commercial airliners had been hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center in New York. I
remember an airline pilot ask what type of aircraft? I cant say, was the response from the controller. Chills
ran up and down my spine as I could only imagine the scene in New York while I continued to my destination.
Fortunately for me I was able to make it back home to Cleveland, unlike a lot of my co-workers who were stranded
in different cities for the next several days. All of the action really infuriated me and even the sense of being
violated overcame me as the industry that I take great pride in representing had literally been raped, not to
mention our great nation had been attacked. My thoughts were instantly cast upon the crews of those aircraft,
whose pride and dignity they had in their careers and the hard work it took to get them there had fallen victim to
mindless cowards.
During my approach into Cleveland, the crew of a Delta Airlines flight behind apparently had a
suspicion about a possible situation onboard their aircraft. They were next for the field. After I landed, FAA,
police and other emergency vehicles passed me on the taxiway and quickly surrounded the Delta 767 (Flight 1989)which had
landed right behind me. A subsequent search of that plane showed no signs of a possible hijacking or bomb. Upon
arriving at the freight ramp I secured the airplane and thats when the relief pilot told me about the Pentagon
being hit by a third jet. All I could think of was what the hell was going on? I left the airport after closing out
my flight and what I saw next could simply be described as chaos. There were police and fire trucks everywhere,
prospective passengers walking across the freeway entrance ramps pulling their luggage behind them and traffic
jammed for miles. The airport in Cleveland was locked down. It appeared that all of the action was on the east
coast, but no chances were being taken anywhere.
It was with great disbelief that I listened to the radio on my way home, both towers of the World
Trade Center collapsing and now a fourth airliner had crashed outside of Pittsburgh, apparently on its way
toward Washington, DC. My cell phone rang continuously with calls concerning my own personal safety. I was
fine, but had to get home and see the news. Driving through downtown Cleveland I noticed our skyline and took
pride as we have the tallest building between Chicago and New York City, now those in New York were gone. My
fiancée had slept through the mornings horror story, which is good since she would have been consumed with
worry. Our wedding was just three days away. She couldnt believe the news as I recapped the morning events to
her and we watched the news. After viewing a timeline of events, its interesting to note that the airliner that
crashed in Pennsylvania was almost directly 15,000 feet above me when it made its doomed turn back to the east
under the control of hijackers. This finally brought reality crashing down on me realizing just how close I was to
tragic history. Aviation was essentially grounded for the next two days as the search for answers continued.
Friday September 14th, 2001, our wedding day. How could we celebrate what should be the happiest
day of our lives when thousands of lives had been lost just days before to senseless acts of terrorism? It was very
difficult to truly be happy that day, but just like the rest of our country we carried on never forgetting the victims
of that day as we held a moment of silence during our reception and all of the men in our wedding party wore US
flags on their lapels.
I am very proud to say that the company I work for and the customer we represent were the first air
carriers to take back to the skies continuing to provide our reliable service, undaunted by cowardly acts of
terrorism against our nation and air transportation system. As pilots, we sometimes give air traffic controllers a
lot of grief, but after September 11th and the excellent job they did getting EVERY aircraft over the United States
on the ground I congratulate them on a job very well done. They held it all together and all we, as flight crews, had
to do was land. All of this, I believe, symbolizes our people and our national pride. We will not succumb to such
acts, rather we will continue to be the foundation of liberty and freedom throughout the world. As a person and an
aviator I will never forget where I was on September 11th, 2001, the day that our lives changed.
God Bless America !

<text>I was driving in the center of Copenhagen when texts was comming in on my mobile... "Plane crashed in world trade center".... I thought it was an accident and a small plane... short time after another text came in "second plane hit"...I stopped the car and I could actually see that the whole city was beginning to "slow down"... even though Copenhagen is like many thousand miles away everything just stopped... I went into a pub where I parked my car and watched the tv for 5 hours... I just couldnt believe it... Later Ive been reading, seeing and hearing so much about it and its just so terrible... those guys up there... I cannot imagine and I feel so sorry for both them and their familiy...

<text>My name is Susan Tucker-Coelho and I have been a music teacher at the George R. Austin Middle School in Lakeville, Massachusetts for 27 years. As years have passed, I have noticed an increased lack of self respect amongst my children along with increased disrespect for those around them. One of my biggest goals as their teacher is to be able to teach children who enter my classroom that they all have a goodness and talent within them. I have taken many workshops to obtain the skills that I have hoped to gain in order to diffuse angry behavior and infuse a sense of self confidence through the activities in my music classroom and choirs. Within myself, however, I really did feel that the children that I saw every day had lost a sense of depth, character, commitment and ambition to overcome difficult obstacles. Too often, I was feeling that the children in my classes simply had little appreciation of all of the great oportunities at their disposal and being rude and totally indifferent was becoming more and more the norm. On the morning of September 11th, several colleagues of mine slipped into my classroom with hints of what was happening. I tried to acess the internet in between classes, only to find that our principal had turned it off for fear of the children finding out this shocking news unexpectedly. During my first free period, two members of my department and I turned on a radio in one of our classrooms and we felt that we truly were witnessing our country being obliterated. Following that, our principal had issued a hand delivered message relaying the facts to us and told us that we were to teach as normally as possible and that she would call the children together at the end of the day to explain to them what had happened. It was so hard to teach. I wanted to cry as I looked at their faces and realized how precious these children were and I also wondered what part, if any, of our country would be left for them. I wondered if these children would even fully grasp the severity of what had happened. The day came to an end. The children listened to our principal explain what had happened. There really was not a lot of reaction. I thought that these chldren probably were most concerned that all of this meant their trip to the mall or their T.V. shows would be cancelled. I felt that their concerns would be only about the latest rap group or if their boyfriend would call that night. The following morning, as I drove past my students at their bus stops, I was amazed. All of the chldren were waving American Flags, had clothing of red white and blue, had pictures of the American Eagle and of the American Flag taped quickly onto thier binders. I felt so proud. The determination on their faces as they exited the buses was enough to make any American proud. That morning, during first period class, our principal asked that we all stop to say the Pledge of Allegiance in honor of the great tragedy. My classroom had no flag. A boy in my room who had been a serious discipline issue all year pulled a small American Flag out ofhis book bag. Richard held up his tiny flag, stood on a chair and said that he was proud to be standing up for his country. We said the Pledge of Allegiance.I praised Richard and the class applauded him when we were done. My worst fears about our future were gone. My doubts about the character of our children were forever changed. I was never so proud. Out there in lazy, apathetic suburbia, we have children filled with more character and dedication than you would ever imagine. The American dream will ALWAYS be alive and well. Our children will rise to the most difficult of challenges with more courage and determination than we ever dreamed. When the chips are down, we know that our next generation will be there and just as strong, if not stronger, than we. God has blessed America! </text>

<text>That morning, I got up and brought my car in for servicing. I had taken the day off to be with my daughter to shop for bridesmaids dresses for my upcoming wedding. I was at the car dealer when someone from the service dept. came and said to turn the channel and that a plane had hit the world trade center. I just assumed that it was an accident. Then on the way home, a local radio station that has been known for pulling jokes like this, was announcing that the world trade center had been hit and that it was a terrorist attack. It got me really mad that they were at it again. Then I went inside and turned the tv on. I watched in horror as the first tower had smoke billowing out of it and then as I was watching I saw the second plane hit the 2nd tower. I was shocked and stunned and couldn't believe that this could happen in our country and so close to home. My daughter came and we watched with disbelief. I called my fiance on the phone and was telling him what I had seen and then the reports came on about the pentagon. I told him, I thought it was a terrorist attack and that I thought we were at war. It was an odd feeling of shock, not wanting to leave the tv as I wasn't sure what to do or what was going to happen next. My daughter and I watched for a while and then decided that there was nothing that we could do, so we went to our scheduled appt. and the one of the ladies at Cameo Bridal Salon's son hadn't called and he worked in the city. We shopped and tried to find prices on dresses but the maker was located in NYC and the city had basically come to a halt. Her son called while we were there and that was a relief. While we were there, we also found my wedding gown. This day has such bitter sweet meaning to me. It was sweet because I got to spend a special day with my 18 year old daughter and we found our special dresses, but it was bitter because we lost so many lives that day and the country experience something horrid. I still feel very empty today remembering what took place last year. I went to a memorial service this morning at work. I think that we were all dreading today, partially in fear that we would have more problems and also as we didn't know how we would each handle our emotions. There was music and we all said the pledge of allegiance and there were people who actually went down to the site to help people looking for their loved ones. There was one woman that has a dog that helps people deal with grief. She told a story of what she felt like and how proud she was of her dog for all the hard work he had done that day. One thing I do realize is that this country is strong and that we will all bind together to fight this awful tradegy that has befallen our land.

	Revised 3/20/2002

Thanks for your concern for all of us.

We got out just in time after the second airplane hit Tower 2. (9/11/2001) The plane went completely into the building allowing all of the survivors (us) included, to rush across the street, north of the Financial Center. We stood there for a short while watching the towering inferno. I saw people jumping from the gash of Tower 1.
All of the USS staff exited the building safely and are alive.
<Note that 9/11 = 911 code-emergency>

Stepping back to the beginning, approx 8:45am, I was looking for a file to support an expense on our July reports. Suddenly, I heard a muffled explosion with echoed report, rocking the tower at least a foot, back and forth, like an amusement park ride. I was thrown against a desk. All filing cabinets slid open. I tried to close them but there were too many. Roger said later to us that he thought that the tower was going to fall. It didn't, allowing us to exit to the stairs, but not until I turned off my computer properly, and coming back again in my office to get as many towels I could get to cover our faces, on the lightly Smokey stairwell. I forgot to douse the towels with water, but it was better than nothing. Amazingly I thought we were going to come back sometime, like in 1993. It was hard to think, to take anything out with me.

Going down the stairs, we went through water, coming from the sprinklers and ceiling, cascading down the stairs. People suddenly stopped moving down and I thought the worst, as I thought there was bomb damage below us and we were going right towards it. I was full of anxiety in my thoughts. We started to move again and finally I saw daylight, out from the stairwell door on the plaza level, overlooking the elevators. From the door we were directed by WTC security to the safest exit. There were bodies near the 1993 Memorial on the plaza outside. The huge windows were all cracked with gaping holes. We then were following each other slowly down the still moving escalator, people screamed to run down faster toward the WTC Marriott Hotel entrance. We were led to the then SAFE, at the time, Tower 2, as mentioned above. (The second airplane hit Tower 2 at the same time we were about to exit to the street). Diane, ahead of us, actually saw the second airplane hit the center. She was right under it. Ron broke up from us to try and locate our other staff members, Crystal, Olga and Maritzela. There were shoes on the ground facing away from the WTC, left behind by someone and all kinds of things in the rush to get away.

We then went to Roger's apartment building, but only Roger was allowed up to his apartment. Eileen, Diane, Mark and I were asked to leave the lobby. We went to the small park behind the building. We could see only one half of Tower 2. It was burning, (another building was in front of it). Because of that obstructed view, when Tower 2 collapsed, it looked like it liquefied and started pouring down, getting lower by steps all the way, like a decreasing waterfall. The sound was like Niagara Falls, from the vantage point of the Maid of the Mist, at the base of the falls in Canada. I will never forget that sound, that rumbling sound. The black acrid smoke chased towards us like a freight train, leaving no time to think of what to do to beat it. There are 10 foot plus walls around the open park area. I did not want to jump due to my recent bipass operation. At this time I did not know where Diane, Eileen or Mark were, I could not see anyone, like a nuclear winter. It was an every man for himself rule at this time. Ron never came back with us. I found out the next day he was alive and well.

The air was getting dark with ash and smoke. I went left to the wall, and saw a table on the ground below. I went over the wall onto the table. I could not see, except for a partial outline of a door frame. I grabbed the frame and pulled it open against people on the other side trying to shut it, to keep the dust out and to limit the people who could get in, lest the room fill up with dust and smoke. This was a restaurant underneath Roger?s building!! I stayed alive for the third time, I thanked God that I was spared again. There actually was a cruller on a dish in front of me. Just me! I felt strange, but I took a piece of it. I thought of everyone else and their ordeal. All was not over. We were given water and napkins to soak with water. One man was injured and was being treated on a table. Firemen walked in and asked for anyone with medical experience to volunteer and also wanted the restaurant as a Command Post. The dust was subsiding and all of us were asked to leave. I took another folded napkin in a basket near the door, to find out later it still had a knife and fork wrapped up in it. I found out later that Mark, Diane and Eileen were picked up by a Fire boat and taken to Jersey City at this time.

I started to walk down the waterside walkway to Battery Park. I reconnected with Roger. He was caring for an 89 year old woman from his apartment. She stayed with us on our trek down to the Ferry Terminal area. We never made it. Tower 1 collapsed, looking like a volcano, with the same furious sound as Tower 2. The smoke and dust was pouring towards us. We kept on walking. I was behind Roger, barely seeing his shoes to guide me. Our faces were looking down to the ground for protection from falling ash and debris, sometimes walking blindly into the bushes nearby. Lucky for all of us, this time, the smoke and ash started to go south away from the waters edge but towards the Ferry Terminal Building. We saw Coast Guard, Fire boats and the New York Waterway Ferries from NJ come to rescue us. They lined up behind the bulkhead railings. Taking on one person at a time, in the middle front of the ferry, ?WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST?. I commented aloud "Just like the Titanic". The WTC towers disintegrating and sinking. People agreed seriously. Roger?s new found friend was taken aboard first. I had to be picked up fireman's style and placed on the deck. I was given first class treatment by the deck hand, checking on me later to see if I was alright. We were taken to Jersey City.
Roger and I walked to all hotels to no avail for a room, ending up at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel. Later that night, Roger got 3 rooms with the help of an HSBC employee that also let us use her phone in the hotel conference room. Most everybody there was in clean suits or casual dress. We were covered; head to toe, in gray ash. Nobody seemed to acknowledge us that we just went through hell on earth. It was a very surreal day! The hotel was holding, honoring, reservations for non arriving passengers from the airport even though all flights were canceled. We set up temporary offices there, as Roger could not go back to his apartment at Battery Park City.

The next day my son picked me up, traveling from Connecticut. The bridges to Staten Island were reopened again on 9/12/01. A military jet flew by, breaking the sound barrier heading towards NYC. What a moving sight in this terrible time! We are at War..........

Home again and alive and well..................
God Bless America!!!

<text> I was working in the Marketing office of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation department on a U. S. Army base on September 11, 2001. We always kept the television in the entry area on Fox News Channel during the day and several employees had gathered around the TV when the broadcasts starting coming through about a plane hitting the first tower.
We were all stunned and talking amongst ourselves wondering if it was a horrible accident and if so, how could it happen. Then another plane hit the second tower and we all knew immediately the U.S. was under attack.
I called my husband who works active duty military at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, and asked if anyone had access to a television - that we were under attack. He works in the Mental Health department and went to watch the news with several other counselors and doctors, knowing they soon would have work to do relating to mental trauma sustained. Then, the Pentagon was hit and shortly thereafter Flight 93 went into the ground.
Everyone on post was horrified and painfully aware that we would be directly affected in many different ways. Some had family members and friends working at the Pentagon and others were worried about loved ones in the Towers. There would be some among us that would be deployed in what we knew would be an effort to eradicate those responsible.
Everyone in our office watched in disbelief as the towers collapsed, as the vivid pictures showed the devastation, the human fear and despair so poignantly displayed on the small screen. Our office atmosphere sank into tears, silence, confusion and worry.
In subsequent days there were many blood drives for the victims, monetary contributions were sent and some actually went to New York to assist in any way possible. We took great comfort and pride in our President and his cabinet, thankful that we had a strong leader to bring us through the tragedies heretofore unimaginable.
Working on a military base caused long lines in the ensuing days to get to work and for many weeks afterward. Our alert system was at a high level and everyone had to be stopped, checked and searched. The security measures continue now - a year later, although the procedures have become smoother and processing time has lessened.
Our pride in the military has never been greater, our patriotism never higher, and support for those who went to fight in Enduring Freedom and Operation Noble Eagle was overwhelming. Care packages were sent to soldiers in the field and many prayers were said for those in harm's way. We have been grateful for all those soldiers who returned unharmed and mourned those who lost their lives.
Nothing is taken for granted any more. Solid values have come to the forefront again and appreciation of the little things is in sharper focus. Our work on the base is emphasized by the knowledge that we civilians are there to serve the military - which serves the country and risks their lives in the process.
We are solidly planted with steely determination to keep America the land of the free, no matter the cost. We are also behind our President 100% and grateful for his strength, compassion and faith.

<text>Sitting at home, enjoying a "Daddy Day" with my beautiful 3year old boy, before flying out to a professional convention the next day, my son comes up to me and says "Daddy, that's bad." I look up from the book I was reading to see the first tower in flames. I told my son that yes, that's bad, but the firemen there will make it better. As we watched, the second airplane hit the second tower, and my son looked into my eyes and asked my "Why did that plane hit the building." Shortly after, the announcement that a plane went in at the pentagon, and there were additional planes unaccounted for came on, and I knew at that point that I had to go. I carried my son to a neighbor, who agreed to watch him for me, kissed him, hugged him, and told him "Daddy has to go help." He said he loved me, and went inside. After responding to my station, firefighters and medics were arriving continuously. I was assigned to Medic 6-2 with Herb, Todd, and a detail man from Round Hill. We were transferred to Co. 15 who's units had already been deployed to the Pentagon. From there, we were grouped with additional units arriving from different parts of Loudoun, and moved to station 25 for briefing. The briefing was held in a somber tone, and we were told to change many of the ways we operate. No radio traffic, do not stop your vehicle, drive with the windows up, do not leave the vehicles unattended, do not answer the door to the stations, and many other directives turned our way of thinking upside down. The shock was continuous. Each of us was in a daze, only our training gave us direction to carry out our tasks. We were moved into neighboring Fairfax County early on, and placed in one of their stations, hiding our vehicles behind their firehouse so as not to make a target. Phones were continually busy, and when we got through, we were told not to tell anyone where we were. Soon the truth came out. We were the response force to be used if a second plane struck and wiped out our brothers at the pentagon. All that was left was to sit and watch the news, and feel helpless. A lot of pacing, and fidgeting was going on in that firehouse, building as the hours passed. Late that night, we were simply tod, "go home, there's nothing more to do." Once at home, with my family, one of the worst things I remember was watching the news coverage. One of the reporters was at ground zero, and commented on the funny noise they were hearing like a roar in the background. My wife asked me what that was, and in that instant, I wanted to shout at the TV, it was the sound of hundreds of PASS alarms sounding in the rubble.</text>

<text>My name is Katherine and i am 18 years old. I am at University in Melbourne, Australia and as one of my subjects i am doing american history. I am currently doing an essay on 9/11 and i am overwhelmed by the courage and strength of the american people whom have been through such heart break in recent years.

At the time of 9/11 i was on a sporting tour in England and had just come home from visiting the tourist attractions. I walked in the front door to see my friends gobsmacked infron of the television. I asked them what they were watching and they turned to me, tears welled up in their eyes and said "its america, the terrorist attacks". I could not believe it, it was all to much, never could i comprehend the visuals on the tv were real.

From that point on, i felt a connection to the attacks and wondered why it happened and how people could do this to the human race. Even now, looking back on what others have said about the attacks i find myself still amazed by the strength and courage of the american people. I hope for each and every one of you that your plight to find peace and security wheather it be within yourself, family, government or country, is successful and that you may one day, in the not so distant future, look back on this fragment in time and remember that it has made you stronger.

In my studies of american history i have come to learn that america is a strong country, bound not only by a stength for patriotism but also a love of all that is just and fair. i wish you all hope and strength, and pray that you may all one day, feel at one and at peace with the mayhem that was bestowed onto your country.</text>

<text>I was at work like every day I go to work, I was listening to the radio and someone turns to me and says a plane hit the twin towers thinking yeah right thats not even funny.

Then I heard them say another one has hit, I was so scared. The first thought that came to my mind was disbelieve then I wondered where everyone I loved was, at that time my fiancee was in Marion buying something for his truck, his dad a lt. colonel so I wondered about him and his mother who was with his grandparents in New York but far away that they were not in the area.

I thought of my family and there well being and then his sister who just moved to Hawaii with her little daughter I was so scared not knowing if people were ok.

it never hit that day how serious it was and what really happened.

I cried everyone cried, I could see the fear in my fiancees eyes wondering about his family-he comes from a military family.

I felt so bad for him knowing everyone I loved was ok. My grandfather couldnt believe it, something like this in my life time.WOW!.

I still hurt and cry to this day thats a memory that will never be out of my mind and heart. I am so angry at them to leave all those people to die.

I guess I dont know what to say except I send my love to those that lost someone and those that morn and hurt.

I am sorry something like this ever had to happen.

<text>I had already jumped out of the shower, it was 7:15 AM. I hurried to get my clothes on and get out of the house because I was running late. The drive to work was a mere 13 miles, but Las Vegas drivers are ten fold worse than your average Los Angeles commuter. I turned on my TV and saw a news report on.....I tuned it out (as I normally do) to get my socks on and what not. Well I watched and watched until it finally clicked in my head that I was looking at a rather large puff of smoke by the Pentagon. The screen was split in two so that on the right side was the Pentagon and the left was what appeared to me at first to be a building on fire.

The socks finally were on and I started to tie up my boots (it was now 7:30 AM.....definitely going to be late for work). I kept watching and now listening to what the "talking heads" on the news were saying............and then the video of the second plane hitting the tower.........it struck me. I jumped in my truck to get my butt to work. It's funny how the mind works, one minute I'm watching this stuff, the next the little voice is yelling "GET TO WORK!!!" I noticed though that when I got outside it was quiet. In fact it was quiet all the way to work...........VERY ABNORMAL for Las Vegas. Planes go in and out of McCarran International Airport 24 hours day.

On the radio was my usual program, Howard Stern. The entire morning then came full circle as I listened to the program (which was on tape delay for the West Coast). Howard had been going about his usual day when the first plane hit and mass confusion hit his studio. I tuned in in time to hear callers calling in and Howard calming them down. "This is bad," I said out loud to myself.

I finally got to work, everyone else on the shuttle from the parking lot to the mall (where I worked in Las Vegas) began talking about what was going on. It just wasn't sinking in yet...........it was more of a novelty type atmosphere rather than an serious event. Some people on the shuttle had family members who worked at the WTC towers.

Once inside, the mall at first was set to open. Then security came around posting letters saying that under the current siutation the mall was going to be closed. My manager asked me a question I can't ever forget,

"Can you believe what's going on?"

I still can't. Almost a year later I still don't. The world was never perfect to me, but now I'm in an impasse of emotions. On one end of the spectrum I'm mad as hell, but on the other I'm resigned to the fact that we can never be able to live our lives the same way.

To beg to be able to walk my baby brother to his gate and to ensure that he got on the right flight was something I never dreamed would happen. It used to be nice. I sometimes tell my friends that things may have changed in the world.....but I'm still living my life like it's September 10, 2001.</text>

<text>I had just gotten out of class and i was headed to the Tiger Den for an early lunch when I saw everyone crowded around the tv's. I watched the tv in horror as the second plane slammed into the second tower. I grabbed my cell phone and dialed my best friend and I asked her what in the world is going on.She said "Jamie, we've been attacked." At first I was stunned, I mean how could they have the nerve to attack us on our own soil. I didn't believe it. I went back out into the lobby and glued my eyes to the TV where they would remain for the next 2 hours. I watched as the news reports came in about a plane hitting the Pentagon and then about the plane crashing in Pennsylvania, one that was headed for the White House. It was all too much. I broke down and started crying. I didn't have any family in New York or Washington but I still felt like I had lost MY family. I felt like it was my dad who had fought so bravely to help others, I felt like it was my mom who had helped people down the stairs to safety. I felt as if someone had ripped my heart out. My heart still goes out to all the mothers, daughters, fathers, husbands, wives, grandparents, and friends who lost loved ones on that day. My prayers are with you all. God Bless America, We will prevail!!!!!!</text>

<text>I was on line with a friend in Cuba when a call came in to turn on my TV. I told him I sensed urgency and asked if I could get back to him in 15 min. He(my Cuban friend and partner) said yes sure and I went to the living room and turned on CNN. The first tower was burning. Then out of no where a plane flew into the second. I was completely blown away. To keep it short after I heard also about the Pentagon I went back to my computer and told my friend in Cuba that a savvy ruler would make more than consolations. He would offer air space, blood, doctors, help in general in a situation which transcended old rivalry and adversity.
E-mail:Glen,
I mentioned Andrew a potential investor - he is in the financial district - he is family.
I will be off line and not available tomorrow. Please explain to Richard.
Jeff
E-Mail #2:
Glen,
We cannot get through. I cannot stay on but obviously tomorrow AM bus plan is not going to happen. Andy who I mentioned as a board member is in the district. We are trying to find out if he worked in the tower but not sure. Two other relatives work at the exchange and at Donaldson. We are in shock, worried, 10,000 + people dead. It is absurd. I wrote Richard and told him that an offering of help (blood, doctors whatever) would be appropriate to distance themselves politically.
I have seen a lot in my life. They are not talking about it much but I can tell you one thing for sure and that is there will be NO slack cut to any country that supports terrorism. The next days or weeks will tell but a full scale operation of unbelievable proportions will ensue. That is my opinion. There will not be a nice ending to the events of this day.
I am concerned about the relations in other countries who have stood by the Palestinians, Libyans etc. The overtones are not good. Gandhi is one of my idols. Passive non violence to achieve a goal is one thing.Protecting yourself and others from these kinds of acts are another. Condemnation of these acts promptly is of the highest order with our friends. Guerrilla warfare to achieve a goal is one thing. Large scale murder of innocents is another - it is Holocaust.
I am worried for loved ones and other that may suffer from these events.
sleepless also
Your Friend,
Jeff
Email # 3:
Glen,
Today I spent a quite day in complete disarray. My business stood still, phones only rang from family who were concerned, I know that Andrew is safe,I know that Ethelyn is safe, I do not know about the rest. Morgan Stanley(on many floors) in New York handles our affairs and there are several who are like family. My daughters art teacher from the NC School of the Arts was in a studio on the 95th floor. I am reminded of a read by Ken Kesey in Boulder at the Kerouac conference in 81. Kesey, Ferlingetti and Ginsberg read. Kesey read a piece about how the assassination of John Lennon had affected the whole world for the year after. These were revolutionaries of the highest order and their weapons were words. So these things are things we are up against. I am amazed at the brutality we like to refer to as humanity. I think it is dangerous for anyone to stand too close to parties that have now or in the past involvement with the people who support these tactics. Even someone who is in disagreement should condemn this action. A savvy politician would do that now, in my humble opinion. This makes me feel steadfast in my resolve on the Cultural Exchange Center aspect of the plan. Mutual ground is a good thing. had to reflect,
Jeff

Glen,
I spoke to Richard twice about these matters. I suppose I should not do that but it happened. He was understanding and condolences. I told him that a offer from there would help distance political suspicion. He emailed me later and said they had offered help, places for planes to land as well as condolences. he asked first of all about my family. I thanked him and shared some information of what was going on. They were not getting all the news but most. Tomorrow I wait to hear about three relatives who we have not heard from but the hectic nature of things...
I feel good about it for some reason. I hope they are OK and just feel that they are.
I will not be able to get the information as planned for tomorrow.
I have some other news but it is late, I am tired.
My best,
Thanks,
Jeff

The second one came shortly after
flying much lower than the norm,

an unthinkable thing happened,
it literally began raining men;

They jumped to their deaths one by one
and in some cases two by two.
Thick smoke formed an impenetrable umbrella
blocking any attempt of a rescue;

Soon, like the song of London Bridge
the towers came falling down.
Now, everyday as I go to work
I avoid that part of town;

It was in second period class when i walked in and saw that the television was on. Then I looked closer on the television and saw the World Trade Center towers in flames.
I asked my friend what had happened and he said the World Trade Center had been hit by two commercial airplanes. I was shocked by this and I asked, "Who would do something like this?" "Terrorists", said my friend. From that point on everything seemed to blur out and I didn't really think about anything at all. It was a sad and silent time.
Later on that day some of my friends and I were out on the field for P.E. One by one our friends were getting picked up by their parents to go home. We heard a plane go overhead and I will remember that plane because the sound seemed to go on forever. I knew this day would change the lives of millions.</text>

<text>I was at work in Howard, SD when my boss's husband came in and said that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by a plane. We had no TV so we turned the radio on and it was all over every channel. At first no one knew it was deliberate and then the second tower and then the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania crash happened and I couldn't think. I am a NY native and I have all of my family and friends there. I was most worried about my aunt who works in the city. She watched it happen and was covered in debris but she was ok. I couldn't focus and I couldn't wait to get home and turn the TV on because when they said the towers had fallen, I didn't believe it. Then I saw it. I still didn't believe it. Luckily I did not lose anyone close to me but I know a lot of people who did. Someone was with us last summer because we visited NY on August 11th after having moved the trip back. We had originally planned to be there on September 11th. It is also our wedding anniversary so lots of mixed emotions. Shortly after the attacks, we got a puppy and we named him Manhattan...Manny for short. We have a shot of the twin towers that my husband took while we were there and blew it up big and it stands tall on a shelf in our living room. This isn't a sad story or a touching story or a heroic story but it's my story and it's proof of how even though we were all the way out here, it hit hard.</text>
