Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes, my life has changed. I am more scared to be around crowded areas. I am more suspicious of people, and afraid of traveling far distances in planes. Now, I appreciate my life more and do not take things for granted. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The people that died, and the families that lost their loved ones. We must remember the fire fighters who died trying to save others. We should remember how the Americans were unified and stand together. Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? As I was introduced to my new coworkers, a rumor started to ripple through the office that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. At first we thought it was a Cessna type plane that had engine trouble of some sort, but that notion was quickly and heartbreakingly lost as the magnitude of the event was heard on the desk radios of the staff. We huddled in the conference room, my new office mates and I, clutching each other as we watched the horror unfold. About 20 minutes later I learned that the son of one of our principals was taking a class at Smith Barney that morning. I didn't know him, but the rest of the staff was shaken with what was surely devastating news. Later that morning, in the midst of the shock and mind-numbing grief we collectively felt, we got the news that this young man had spontaneously gone down to a street vendor to grab some breakfast, and was spared what would have been a horrific fate. I can only imagine the relief his family felt, and wish so many other family members of innocent victims had been so lucky. We are closer and kinder to each other for having shared the experiencing of witnessing such an unbelievably painful event. Tell us your story: 9/11/02 On September the 10th, 2001, I boarded a plane in Nashville, Tennessee headed for Reno, Nevada to visit my Grandfather. This was my third trip that year. That afternoon, after having arrived at my grandpa's home, he and I were enjoying the view from his back deck and talking. As we talked, the subject of World War II came up as is usual. My grandpa had been a Naval Aviator in the South Pacific during WWII, receiving both the DFC and the Purple Heart. Naturally, I am a WWII buff so we often talked about the war, but rarely of his detailed memories. Once again I tried that day to get him to open up and share with me some of his experiences from the Great War, but as is often the case with war veterans, he remained reluctant to recall those painful memories, and understandably so. I said to him, "Grandpa, for all the wonderful things you guys did, you still have one more job to do." Grandpa replied with half of a grin, "What the hell do we have to do now?" I said "Grandpa, those of you guys still here today, need to tell your stories in as much detail as you can stand, and to as many people as will listen, lest we forget the horrors of war." I could see by the look on his face that this would be something unbearable for him. We changed the topic. The next morning at just after 6am Reno time, I was in the guest bathroom shaving when I heard my cell phone ringing in the next room. Ordinarily I did not take my cell phone on the trip to Reno, but for some reason I chose to that time. I remember wondering why anyone back home would be calling me so early, forgetting that it was after 9 on the East Coast, after 8am where I live. Sensing an urgency I quickly ran to answer the phone, smearing shaving cream all over the keypad as I heard my wife's voice on the other end asking me if I were watching the television. I said "No, why what's up?" She said go turn on your TV, we are being attacked. I ran upstairs to my grandfather's bedroom, half covered in shave cream and the phone in my hand. The first thing I saw was my grandfather sitting on his bedside looking at the images on the TV screen with tears rolling down his face. As we both sat and watched in stark disbelief and horror, my grandfather said to me "Son, I think someone forgot." Later that day my grandpa was hospitalized with heart problems, where he remained until after I boarded the very first plane to leave Reno International Airport the following Thursday morning, the 13th of September. I was scheduled to board a Boeing 757 for Dallas, where I would connect to another 757 to Nashville. Instead I was on a twin engine turbo-prop to Salt Lake City, where I caught a 757 to Cincinatti, and another twin engine into Nashville just after midnight. My wife Leonora, who is from NY, and I watched as events continued to unfold. We learned of the death of her cousin Michael Tammucio, who worked on the 98th floor of Tower #2. We wept with the rest of our nation, as we mourned not only the death of thousands of innocent men & women, but the way of life that has now been forever changed. It was a B-day and I was in my first block class. It was a Probability and Statistics and we had just gotten our test back that we had just taken from the previous class. The words our principal, Ms. Gatesgill said over the loud speaker still are echoing in my mind. The class was silent as she said, ?I?m sure all of you have heard about the tragedy that has happened in New York. I don?t have a problem with teachers tuning your T.V. to see the events as they unfold." So for about an hour my class sat in amazement watching history happen. In my second block class all we did was watch the news and talk about how we were feeling. That class was when some tears were shead. On the way to my third block class I knew my teacher would the day to go on as planned so we did our work. On the way to lunch the halls were empty, which was unusual for my school. Lunch was quiet and all anyone talked about was the way they felt and how they thought the nation was going to react. That day seemed like it went on for eternity. In my last block class was were we talked about it the most. This class, Citizenship, was very opinionated about their feelings on why this had happened and who had done it. That night all my family did was watch the news. One of my younger sisters was asking so many questions and all my dad or mom would say was that someone really doesn't like the United States and they were being very mean. I really think that she knew it was something more than that. Now that the one year anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy has come and gone I feel that I have changed, but not as much as the people that were directly affected by it. I realize now that America has its weaknesses and that the government as well as the citizens can do something to help. I now see that our nation isn?t the most perfect and that anything can happen where I live either in the United States or Lexington, Kentucky. I also realize that there are two definitions of hero and I am really contemplating on whether or not to become a paramedic. Prior to the tragedy I always looked ahead and I had all of my life planned out. Now I realize that with one event it can change dramatically. I was planning on going to a good pre-law college and then going on to law school, but now the option of being a paramedic has come into perspective. The fact that those types of people are looked up to in that manner would be really flattering and I would like to know how it feels to save someone?s life. I remember talking to my friends before school started and having a good time. When the bell rang I went to class. When I walked in, the television was on and they were talking about something dealing with the World Trade Centers. I just blew it off and sat down. Then I remember this girl named Dallas coming up to me and said, "The World Trade Centers got bombed" I was like, "What's the World Trade Centers?" Soon after, the principal told the teachers to turn off their tv's, so I didn't really know much about it. All I knew was that some terroists blew up some buildings. Which wasn't even what really happened. That day, I was supposed to go to my friends house after school to work on our dance for drill prep. Since I didn't really know much about what happened and neither did my friend, we decided to work on our dance any ways. So I went to her house and when we got there her mom had the tv on. We started watching it and finally saw what really happened. I was so upset that I called my mom to pick me up. When I got home I immediatly turned on the tv and started to watch. It made me feel so sad that so many people lost their lives. They showed horrible things, like people jumping out of buildings. Then they showed people in Afghanistan laughing and celebrating for what the terroists did. I was so angry that I wanted them to pay for what they did. Now I think about it and I still feel sad, but then I think about how everyone put aside their difference and came together as a country. I remember sitting here in the office, arriving early as I am inclined to do, listening to the morning complaints and gossip floating around our open work area while anxiously waiting for the coffee to finally finish dripping. There was a little giggle at something or other someone said that immediately piqued my interest. I remember asking my coworker to repeat it ? a plane ran into the World Trade Center? When? This morning? Are you kidding? It seemed like a joke to me at the time. Then our receptionist walked in?she wasn?t inclined to come in early to participate in the morning frivolity?and joined right in, ?Yeah, there was another plane, too!? I remember this all vividly because right then, my life changed forever. There were no more smiles. In an instant everyone scrambled to the nearest radio to find out what was happening. I remember thinking, ?This can?t possibly be real, can it?? The following few hours were rife with an ever increasing dose of horror: A plane crashed in Pennsylvania, The Pentagon was hit, The World Trade Center?s Twin Towers Collapsed, Thousands of People Dead, People Leaping From Eighty Stories Up to Their Deaths! It refused to stop coming. The voices on the radio were as confused as I was by the rapidly unfolding events of the morning. I remember that suddenly, a television set appeared in our work area and someone fiddling with a set of rabbit ears and then those terrifying images began to appear before us. I can?t remember breathing after the first time I witnessed the image of a fully fueled airliner disappearing into the side of one of the Twin Towers. And, sadly, I still refused to believe it. In the days and weeks that followed it just didn?t seem to get any better. Everyone I met, everyone I talked to had a singular focus?September eleventh. Suddenly, every one of us was the same. It no longer seemed to matter that we all still had to go to work everyday and earn a living or that our kids were driving us crazy or that our parents were overbearing or that our car didn?t work. I remember a few conversations that still haunt me to this day. I?m sure we all have them. Someone?s brother was at the Pentagon. Another?s uncle was at the World Trade Center. But, most of all I remember the collective fear invading us all. How could this have happened? And, will it happen again? What about the power plant? Or, the LNG terminal sitting invitingly out in the bay beckoning another attack? I?m not sure when those feelings began to subside or even how I let them begin to dissipate. I do know, however, that certain things will never be the same. I remember looking up at a passing airliner and thinking, I wonder where they?re going? Now I see one and stare after it hoping it will land safely where it is supposed to go. I remember that when I heard the word ?cap? I thought of a baseball hat. Now I think of military jets flying over our heads protecting our skies. I see now that most of us have moved on after a year. The morning gossip and complaints and jokes are back in the office. The coffee pot is back to being more important in the morning than the phone or the filing or the work. I notice most of us are back to worrying about the economy, our bosses, our kids and parents more so than events we cannot possibly control. But, then here we are on September eleventh?three hundred sixty five days away from the worst day any of us can remember and I wonder ? have we really moved on? I?m not sure we have. I will never look at travel in the same way as I did, three hundred sixty six days ago. I don?t think I?ll be able to look at tall building anymore without considering whether or not it might be a target. I have driven past the power plant on a number of occasions and remember each time, breathing a sigh of relief when I?m safely away. It is an unwelcome feeling I just can?t seem to shake. That is really what September eleventh has done to us all. In those few short hours when the world of terror reined over us one year ago today, we were made to carry a burden that may never go away. I cannot pretend to know whether that which we all carry will fade completely. Just as I am sure everyone who lived through December seventh, nineteen forty-one could not have possibly imagined their feelings of that morning ever leaving them. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: During the 9/11 attacks, I was in my home in Korea watching TV and browsing through channels when I got to the news channel. I was astonished to see that one of the World Trade Center Towers was on fire. While my mom was sleeping, I told her the news and brought her over to my room. She was surprised as well. Later, the second plane crashed into the second tower and that's when we were sure it was an act of terrorists. We weren't sure how our friends and relatives were because the people closest to us were in Korea then, but I believe we called my uncle in New York City in the district of Queens--which is pretty far away from Manhattan. I think we couldn't get connected because the phones were down then(which probably most people experienced). The first significant thing that happened to me as a result of the attack was the increased security at the airports when I was returning to the States. Security personnel were much more stricter than they used to be and it took forever to get through security. Over time we forgot about the attacks but every year the anniversaries remind us of the incident. 9/11 was like the events of terrorism going on in the Middle East today. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My sister turned on the radio around 900a and heard a plane had hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center. As she told me she walked over and turned on the TV and we watched in horror it was on fire and the second plane came in and hit the other tower. Unable to believe what we were seeing we were stunned. The rest of the day we were glued to the TV. The sad part is that it was my youngest daugter's 28th birthday. We had planned to all go out to dinner to celebrate her birthday but instead everyone came to my sister's house. Our families and one of our brothers and his family gathered in the living room joining hands making a circle. We went around the circle and everyone said a prayer even the youngest who was 7. Those prayers were so touching and especially the children as they prayed for the people in New York and Washington and our country. The birthday was celebrated by a family together in prayer and love. The next night we went to Houston's First Baptist Church for a citywide prayer service that brought all faiths and nationalities together. On Friday of the same week we stopped at 700p at a restaurant and were led in a prayer by the owner. Candles were lit and red, white, and blue ribbons were handed out to wear. The following week my husband and I traveled to Washington, D.C. and went up on a hill that overlooks the Pentagon where a makeshift memorial had been set up. There were bears, candles, flowers, photos, letters, and memorial services programs for some of the victims. There was even a baby stroller tied to a tree. The huge black hole was gaping open in the Pentagon but the beautiful colors of "Old Glory" gave hope and pride. As we traveled from Houston and back we participated many times in efforts of support for the victims of the terrorist attacks on our country. We signed two huge posters at the Natural Bridge in Virginia that were being taken to New York and Washington sponsored by a local radio station. Then in York, PA we hought water and other items at Walmart to be taken by huge trucks from Walmart to New York that very day. We bought homemade baked goods from firemen outside Lancaster, PA and donated money at several restaurants along our route to go to the families of the victims. Seeing the flags on cars, businesses, homes, farms, and churches gave us such a feeling of solidarity all across our country. We stand together and have a wonderful nation that we are not about to give up. Prayers are still being said for the families of those we lost on 9-11-2001 and their loved ones will not be forgotten. Tell us your story: I woke up to my favortite disc jockey on the Kiis FM radio station speaking with a serious and sad tone of voice, instead of his usuall funny, and uplifting laughter. In my ten years of listening to this man I had never heard anything but an energetic happy man. I was scared. I jumped out of bed and went to the living room to turn on the t.v. I was horrified. In shock. The day outside was the most beautiful September day, but most people were in their homes glewed to the t.v or listening to the radio while on the road. I drove around looking for a store that sold American flags, but I went to a few before I could find one. I found the small flags with wooden sticks at a grocery store. I bought two, one for my car and the other for my house. Everything was so surreal, sadness overwhelmed me and tears were puouring down my face. Never had I felt such impotence and genuine pain for thousands of people unknown to me. My heart ached, and still does for all the inocent lives lost. A couple of days later when I walked outside my building our American flag was being displayed by all the apartments around. It was beautiful. I was filled with pride, hope and love. This day shook America, but didn't break it's spirit. We all united to get through this, and we all did it with genuine love,and love seeks to protect and aid; it is unselfish, and it moves us in miraculos ways. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was sleeping when my mom woke me up and told me something terrible had happened to our country. The world trade center in New York had been attacked by terrorists. Even though I was only nine when the world trade centers were attacked, I felt like I understood just how bad it really was. The time it actually happened it was about 4 in the morning at my house. My mom told me I needed to come upstairs and watch the TV, becaue almost all the channels had news coverage showing video footage or plains flying into the twin towers and then the towers finally crumbling and falling to the ground. Even though it was about six in the morning, I was still really worried about what had happaned. The 11th was a school day, so despite all my protests I did have to attend that day. I'll never forget that day either. When I got to school (I was in 4th grade) my teacher was crying when she asked us all if we knew what had happened that morning. She then kind of discribed it to us and asked if we had any questions. The whole class was silent. I kind of only paid half attention to my teacher the rest of the day because I was lost thought. I thought about all the people that worked in those two buildings. I thought about my uncle Cliff that owned a Deli right across the street from tower one. I think I was in shock. This shock would later turn to feelings of being scared, and further on down the road I felt rage against the stupid jerks that had killed thousands of innocent Americans. Today I think my feelings are a mixture of hate for the terrorists, and sorrow for the people that lost loved ones. I'm also very happy to tell you that my uncle Cliff is still alive today. Many people died that day of pure innocence. Tons are no longer with us because of one man named Osama bin Laden. This day of 9/11 has affected a lot of people of this generation. It has affected me because this attack was so sudden and unexpected. But as many, I remember it clearly. It was our fourth day of school and we were in third period when the loudspeaker came on. ?At approximately half past eight this morning, two hijacked plans crashed into the World Trade Center.? Throughout all of Pennfield Middle School, there was complete silence. Everyone was shocked that someone would actually do something that terrible! Later that day I went home early because of the attacks. When we were home, my mom was glued to the TV. I just sat there still in shock mode. All I wandered that day was one- could this happen again? Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: School started at 8:45 that morning, while the Canadian anthem played at 9:00 in-class like it usually does at my school. I arrived at school at 8:25 that morning. I left the house that morning with another normal day ahead of me. There was barely any news that morning, and everything seemed fine. Unfortunately, it wasn't. I first heard about the 9/11 terror attacks at my High School (Saint Pius) around 11:15 AM during my first senior year as a Grade 11 student. I was in my second class of the day when the school Vice Principle came on over the school P.A. and told everyone to remain in their classrooms and not to go home. At the time, many of the students (like myself) had not heard the horrific news and were clueless to what the Principle was talking about. The Principle briefly mentioned that "a horrific event" had taken place in the United States, but failed to inform us of any attacks. I started to assume that some type of mass shooting at a US high school was probably what the Principle was referring to. After the principle's message, everyone in the class (including myself) started to question the teacher. Everyone was curious to know what had happened in the United States. The teacher told us to stop asking her all at once, and give her a chance to tell us what she knew about this "horrific event". She told us that she heard that 3 planes had been hijacked and slammed into the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Some of us had no idea what the World Trade Center was, so she referred to it as the "Twin Towers Of New York". Those 5 words filled the entire classroom with shock and disbelief. I immediately started to think about what is must of been like for the people on board and pictured the hijackers in my mind. As the lunch bell rang 15 minutes later, I met 2 of my friends outside my classroom and all 3 of us agreed that we should go to someone's house to check it on television. So we walked to one of my friend's house which was about 5 or 6 minutes away. We talked about what we thought was happening on the way to my friend's house. One of my friends was still in disbelief that terrorists could slam a plane into the Pentagon. We arrived at my friend's house about 5 minutes after we left the school. We got in the door, walked into the livingroom, sat down, and turned on the television to CNN. The first image I saw when that television screen came on, was one image i'll never forget. I saw World Trade Center collapsing into the streets of Lower Manhattan. I knew it was a re-run of earlier footage because Aaron Brown (The CNN New York correspondent) mentioned that it was footage from earlier on. I constantly looked at my friends and said "This is unbelievable... Can you believe this?" I had no idea that it was this serious at first. My lunch was in the bag, but I was too disgusted to even think about eating at this point. The friend that took us to his house was on the phone for about 10 minutes after we turned on the television. Apparently some of his relatives were coming flying to Ottawa from Italy on that same day. My friend only realized this after we had turned on the television, and began calling his Mother and Father and asking them if they had any information on their flight or if they were okay. Neither parent was sure. I was watching and reading some of the information on the little scrolling ticker that you see on the bottom of the screen. Some of the headlines on that ticker read "President Bush moved to undisclosed location"... "Philadelphia landmarks evacuated"... "All NYC airports now closed." As I read more of these headlines, I became worried, and began to think that anything was possible at this point. Hell, half of the Eastern US was evacuated. After about 25-30 minutes of watching CNN, we decided to get back to school so that we could tell other people what we saw. As we left the house, I looked up at the sky with a sense of fear. At this point, I thought that anything could have happened. It was a beautiful weather day. It was about 21 or 22 (Celcius), and it was totally clear. On our way back, my friends were saying stuff like "Can't you see the US making Iraq one big parking lot?" We were dead serious about that question. As we walked through the school field back to the buildings, one of my friends said "If I see one plane, I am running." I then said "Don't worry, I don't think they'll attack us." But deep down, I was terrified. Once we got into the outside area of the school (the area in between the all the buildings where everyone hangs out at lunch) we began telling others what we saw. Many people live far from the school, so we were one of the few groups of people that saw it that lunch. I remember saying "You can actually see the towers falling apart onto the street." I had seen the footage of the tower collapsing, but I still had not seen footage of the planes going into the buildings. I didn't even know that there was footage of the planes going into the buildings. After about 10 minutes of telling other friends what we saw, the warning bell rang for third period (third period for seniors, but the start of junior lunch for the juniors). I was one of the first ones to arrive at my computer engineering class. The time was now about 12:25 PM. Once the entire class arrived, we began to work our "Bread board" activity that we had started the day before. The teacher didn't need to instruct us because the lesson was the same for the entire week. I began talking to one of my other friends in the class as we tried to work. I told him what I knew, and he told me what he knew. It was increasingly more difficult to work as I thought about it more and more. About 20 minutes into class, the teacher got a television working with an antenna. We tried picking up CTV, and managed to get a satisfactory signal. I saw Lloyd Robertson's face at first, then we started to get sound as someone adjusted the antenna. We heard him say something like "And now we have-- We have a video shot of the second plane going into the building." I thought "Oh my God." All of the sudden, they showed the Twin Towers. One was in flames, and one was still untouched. Then you could see this black object on the far right of the screen slowly work it's way to the center of the screen where the towers stood. Then you could see this big explosion from the other side. I remember a guy named Brandon looking up at me and saying "Holy crap, man." He was in disbelief, just like the rest of us. There were only about 5 or 6 of us around the television, but the class had close to 25 people. I told my friend to come over quick and take a look at what I was watching. It was still a little difficult to see every detail since the signal had a fair amount of static. After getting no work done during that class, I headed off to my last class of the day at 1:45 PM. Physical Education was the last class of the day. We were outside for class playing Frisbee Football. I played the first game, but after that, I began to think of the attacks again. The weather was still beautiful and was perfect. After we played a few games, it was close to 3:00 PM which is when school ends. I was so terrified, that I remember wondering what it would be like if a plane would hit our gym! I got changed, grabbed my stuff, and left the gym. I headed towards the parking for my drive home. While walking towards the parking lot, I looked at a few 30 story apartment buildings off to the East with the sun shining on them. I saw my Mother who was driving me home that day. I went over, hopped into the backseat of the van, and the first thing I remember saying to her was "So, you must have heard the news." She replied with "Of course. This is like a nightmare." On our way home, we had to stop at the grocery store to grab a bag of milk and a loaf of bread since we were out. I rarely like going into grocery stores, but I told my Mother that i'd go in with her because I wanted to ask her everything she had heard that day. I was getting on her nerves with all my wuestions while we were in the store. We went to the express line and quickly moved through. I remember my cashier asked my Mother a question about the attacks, but I do not remember what the question was. When we got home, I threw my bag onto my bed, grabbed a blank VHS tape, went downstairs, turned to CNN, and started recording. I spent the entire night watching CNN in my basement on our big screen. I didn't get any homework done, nor did I think of anything except the attacks. At supper, I ran upstairs, grabbed my plate, ran back downstairs, and kept watching. I put down my plate, and completely forgot about it. After 45 minutes, I realized that I hadn't touched my supper. I got through two "mouth-fulls" of corn, then stopped. I wasn't hungry. Around this time, CNN had breaking news that there were explosions in Kabul, Afghanistan. I can very well remember my Fathers saying "This could be the beginning of World War 3." My Father followed me downstairs when I had my supper earlier on. He watched television with me for the rest of the night. I watched and taped George Bush's speech to America. Around 10:45 PM, I decided to get some rest. I prepared for bed my brushing my teeth and doing everything that I usually do before bed. I had difficulty falling asleep that night. I finally remember falling asleep around 1:30 in the morning. When I woke up the next morning, it was close to 6:00 AM. It turned on my little television in my room, and noticed that every channel had live coverage, even at 5:45 in the morning. Tuesday, September 11, 2001 will be a day that I won't ever forget. Images of the World Trade Center on fire are embedded in my mind until the day I die. I find myself thinking about them every once in a while. As for the tapes that I recorded during 9/11: I still have them, but I haven't watched them in a while. Those tapes will be something to show my children. Those tapes will always be a treasure of mine. Those tapes show thousands of people being murdered. Those tapes show September 11 -- The day that shook America. Tell us your story: I was at work when my mother called to tell me what happened and that a friend of the family, Stuart Meltzer, was trapped in the building. He had called his wife to say goodbye: "Honey, something terrible has happened. I don't think I'm going to make it. Take care of the children. I love you." I watched in disbelief as the towers crumbled, still holding a flicker of hope that people survived. On September 10th, I had given my notice at work so I could stay at home with my 6 month old baby. It was a tough decision with a big loss of income and I didn't know if it was the right one. After Sept. 11, I realized that I made the right decision. Zero hour starts at eight o'clock usually, but today there was a faculty meeting. That meant that zero hour started at 8:20. I walked about that time after hearing some rumor about planes in the halls. I hadn't paid attention though. As i walked in, I saw that Mrs. Rosier and the half of the class that had arrived were crowded around something in the back of the room. As I walked closer, I saw it was a news broadcasting on T.V. There was some live-on-the-sceen footage of the World Trade Towers and a few replays of what had happened earlier. After of about fifteen to twenty minutes of watching the news, our principal came on the intercom and told all the teachers to turn off their T.V.s and get on with class. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: When I look back on September 11th it is hard to believe that it has been a whole year. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 15 years old, wearing a brown tanktop with the skyline of Chicago on it with my kacki skirt. I was working on a group project for chemistry before school even started and I remember someone running down the hall saying "The Pentagon has been Bombed!!" I have to admit that my first thought was, "oh great someone is running around school spreading horrible rumors about the Pentagon being bombed, man highschoolers can be so immature." But when I finally got to my first period class and Dr. Veach our principal came over the intercom and told us what had happened I couldn't believe it. Band was my first period class and ignoring what the principal had said about turning the tv off we all gathered around the big screen television and watched the news station in horror. Eventually one of our directors came out and turned the television off, but that didn't stop us. We just went searching for another tv and wheeled it into the drum room and crowded around it once again. Throughout the rest of the day I didn't have the freedom to watch the tv, but in every class all of our tests and quizzes were cancelled for the week and teachers were advised not to give homework that night. When I finally got home I sat in my chair in the living room and watched the tv until dinner time. After that I sat infront of the tv once again and watched until around 11pm when I finally had to drag myself away to go to sleep. They say every generation has its one major event in history that they will never forget. For once I was just hoping that our generation would never have to go through what the previous generations of ours did. But now I see things differently, we have become closer as a nation and I believe that everything that has happened God will use to make good. So now all we have to do is go on with our everyday lives and always remember what can happen when people start to hate eachother. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a police officer for Hapeville, Georgia. I was in downtown Atlanta for Grand Jury. When I got into my car going back to the station I turned on my radio. The first words I heard was Y106 and Rhubarb Jones saying "Folks this is a sad,sad day". Then told that a plane had flown into one of the twin towers and that a lot of people in New York did not even know it yet because of communication problems. I quickly went back to the station and when I entered the doors I learned that a second plane had hit the towers. My brother in Law is a piolt for ASA and I called my sister because I knew he was flying out that day. Thank God he was fine and had not flown anywhere near New York. We had Televisions on in different offices at the station and soon learned that the Pentagon and Penn. had also had planes go down. My first thoughts were my God I was in a Federal building in downtown Atlanta. Hapeville Police Dept. sits right at the Atlanta Airport. You can see planes taking off and landing all the time. Loop Road seperates the airport from us. I do not believe I have ever seen so many different departments come together so quickly. We all began to patrol that area. There was Clayton Co., City of Atlanta, College Park, East Point,and Hapeville. I remember as I drove up and down Loop Road how quiet it was and how solemn everything seemed. Just the quietness of no planes landing or taking off. It was a unheard of silence for this area. And the next few days would be no different. My primary job at Hapeville at the time was Juvenile Officer. The chief asked me to go to the Elementary School and the Catholic School and check on the students and talk with the principals. I walked through the schools and on the grounds. I told the staff at each school to keep doors and windows closed and if they saw anyone or anything suspicious to call immediately. The whole time I was at the school I thought of my six children and just prayed that they would be ok and that their guardian angels and the good Lord would look out for them. When I picked up my children from daycare and school that afternoon. My 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter had thought the planes had hit Atlanta and that it was all happening near me. I never realized until that moment what fear they had for me and my job. I tried to explain to them what had happened by changing the story around about the Grinch who tried to steal Christmas. I then heard a version of it on the radio. I thought well I guess we think a like. I am a single parent and me and my children are very close. I think this brought us a whole lot closer if that is possible. It makes us appreciate what we have and how quickly it can all be taken a way. My heart breaks for every person who lost someone on this day. I have shed many tears for these people and their families as I am sure most of the World has. There is a song that is I believe called "Lord I hope this Day is Good". Every time I hear it I think that is all any of us can hope for a good day with a little less crime and hate in the world. I was sitting with my friends in his class room while it happened. I was in Mr. Howard's class. Everythign seemed alright, I was laughing and having fun with my friends in class like every other day. Then I heard what happene, it didn't seem real. It was scary and unrealistic. That day was very scary and alerting to everyone that our country wasn't the big and bad country we thought we are...I think it made us bigger and stronger!
