Tell us your story: I remember being in my kitchen and I was learning a dance routine with my friend Stuart,he was in a rush to get to an audition and had to get ready,he went upstairs whilst i carried on about my business,he had obviously turned on the television,he shouted for me with the urgency in his voice i knew it was important..there was a live still on the screen,no sound the first plane had struck and there was this image of the first tower on fire..i just said to stuart "Is this a film" as I said that the second plane struck..my heart was in my stomach the sheer magnitude of what was unfolding infront of us was unbelievable (still is).. "Please god don't let there be people in there" was going through my head,knowing only two well there must be..We sat silent watching the events unfold.. The events of that day have been scared into my memory and I think about it probably every day. Now when i see the film footage it's still seems unbelievable but sadly..I like to believe there is a God and understand many people find great comfort in their faith but I'm sorry he's got some pretty big explaining to do to let so many innocent people and their families suffer in such a horrific way. One of our customers had their t.v. on and just started yelling. We went and found the T.V. used for training videos and turned it on and watch the horrible news together. Some of us did leave work early for the day as we were told we could if we needed to. I rushed home to get my kindergarner from school and younger child from the sitters just to have them near me. I remember how hard it was to explain to both of them why me and my husband were crying later in the evening as we watched the news. This year now 4 and 6 they understand a little more of what happened that day. My 4yr old told the sitter today I'm wearing red,white and blue in memory of the people who died in the building hit by a plane last year. My 6yr old had an all school assembly by the american flag today where they resited the pledge and sang patriotic songs as a school. He also was dressed in red,white and blue.All of us at my work made an effort to wear red,white and blue and just remember while we took calls as usual. one crew member made each of us flag pins of beads and saftey pins. many of us helped so there was enough for all. Today has been a glumy kind of day for all I think even though we have riased above last year and grown closer to friends as well as our families. Not a day goes by that I don't tell my family I love them. Today the 4 yr old didn't want to let me go at the sitters. I think she senced the mood we all have been in today 09/11/02 one year later. I was tuned in to NBC-the Today show when suddenly on my screen appeared one of the Twin Towers with smoke and flames spewing from it..I thought I had hit a button on my remote that took me to a dreaded "action" movie. My rational was broken as the voice of Katie Couric announced a plane had hit Tower One..likening it to the small plane that had hit the Empire State Bldg. many yrs. before. I sat trying to absorb what was unfolding before my eyes..as News Copter 4 stayed fixed on this I could see a plane appear on the r side of the screen, watched it pass turn and as I screamed aloud for it to stop it penetrated Tower 2. I reached for my phone to call one of my son's and the line was dead.. cut off I felt this tremendous feeling of detachment and doom.. the horror that continued to unfold from that moment is impossible to explain..I was to learn a dear friend's husband Lt. Thomas O'Hagan, NYFD had perished as did a neighbor's son FF Michael Carroll.. To this date I cry, mourning the tremendous losses of 9-11-01. I pray for all our Heroes, their Families..I thank all those who put their lives in jeopardy to save others, to the men & women who worked in Rescue, Recovery and Volunteers who did whatever they could I stand beside President George W. Being self-employed working from my home, having the TV on just isn't conducive to getting work done. But my mom was visiting from Phoenix, and would be leaving within a couple of hours for home (via airplane, of course), and we were waiting for weather updates and passing the time. Initial reports and shots of a burning WTC-1 didn't get me too worked up, I mean, they'll have a way to take care of that problem. I mean, this is NYC! But as the story unfolded, my dismay at watching the second one crash into WTC-2 -- well, I remembered an identical feeling when Challenger blew up years ago -- an insult to my mind that had my brain reeling from the impact... Graphic images tortured my soul, yet I couldn't turn away. The fact that events kept unfolding faster than I could grasp them -- panic was beginning to envelope me. What would be next? Of course we heard the news of the grounding of the planes. Mom had rented a car, so she just hopped in and headed for Phoenix. And I was all alone watching the buildings come down. Don't know as I've ever felt so alone in the middle of calamity. Never did get much work done that day... I won't ever be the same again, and I won't ever forget. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: There are some things you can never understand unless you were there. September 11th was that kind of thing for me. Shortly after 9-11 me and two other people went down to New York to work with the Red Cross. I?m not one to really do things like that. Usually I let huge challenges like that pass me by and then later wish I had done something rather than sit back and feel helpless. I thought going there would empower me. Make me feel like I had done something for my country and in some small way honor those who died by trying to help clean up their city. On the second day I was there I was asked to go work at Ground Zero at a place that had been set up to fed, support, and offer a place of rest for rescue workers. I wanted to say no. I was so afraid to be in that place that had so much death and destruction. But I went. I wanted to be strong and go wherever they needed me. We all piled on a bus. We has red badges with our names and pictures and in big bold writing ?Ground Zero-Full Access.? Everyone was full of nervous energy. Only one person on the bus had been to Ground Zero before. He told us that he couldn?t impart to us what it was like. ?You?ll know when you get there,? he said. We inched through traffic. We were curious. We were about to see in the flesh a site that had been made mythical to us through hundreds of hours of television coverage. We were almost there when we heard cheering. We looked out of the windows of the bus and saw about fifty people yelling and clapping and holding up large signs that said ?Thank You? and ?You are Heroes? and ?New York Loves You!!? Wow, we thought, people are here just to say thank you to nameless faces for what we were doing. It was overwhelming. Myself and others cried a little bit. We went through a check point guarded by men with machine guns. We started to see ash covering everything. The bus got silent. This was getting real. Then the smell came. It happened slowly. Like maybe at first it was just some fumes from the bus. But then a smoky smell was added to it. Then to the mix came a smell that I couldn?t identify. I began to breath a little deeper. The smell was horrible, but I really wanted to know what it was. Then it hit me. I suddenly knew what the smell was. I didn?t want to admit to myself what it was but I knew. It was the smell of burnt flesh. You wouldn?t think that you would know what that smelled like. But when it hit your nose and traveled to your brain?you knew. It was unmistakable. It was a smell that in one degree or the other was all over the city. You just had to get close enough to the source of it to really get a handle on what it was. Or maybe you just had to get close enough that you had no choice but to acknowledge what it was. It is a smell that would be with me long after I left New York. For weeks I would smell it every time I woke up. Even now when I think about it I can smell it like I am still standing there. When we walked up to where we got our first real view of ground zero we all stopped. Even our armed guard stopped moving to give us a moment to take it in. One thing that I don?t think people really realize is just how enormous it was. It was bigger than words. On TV it looked almost small. Compartmentalized. Like it all fell in a neat pile. No. It was so big that?I don?t know?it was just so so big. So much. I was asked a bit after being there to walk around the rubble with a fire fighter to deliver water to the workers. And although the time I would spend with this man would change my life I don?t think we ever told the other our names. But we were brothers. United in a common mission to clean up this?mess. This disaster. As we were walking along we talked about his wife and his kids and of a friend he had lost in the collapse of the second tower. As we were walking there was commotion in front of us and he began to run to it. He yelled to me to follow close behind. You have to understand that the rubble and the area around it were very unstable. He new the lay of it better than me. It really just wasn?t safe for me to be without him. But as we neared the group and saw what was going on I stopped in my tracks. I saw a body?half a body really. It was a person, but only from the waist up. It was so badly burned you couldn?t determine its color or gender. It had no hair. The smell was more than I could handle. A firefighter to my right began to vomit. Someone behind me began to sob. Others began to work the body onto a tarp. My comrade turned and told me that they didn?t need us here. I was so relived to get away. We pretended we didn?t see it. I handed a bottle of water to the man who was throwing up. We continued on our trek to hydrate the workers. He began to tell me that he thought I was amazing for being there. He said that he couldn?t imagine coming so far from home to do what I was doing and that he was really grateful. I told him that he was being silly. That was the word I used to this huge fireman with the thick accent of a native New Yorker. Silly. I told him that what I was doing didn?t compare to what he was having to do. He said ?It?s just my job.? What he was going through shouldn?t have to be anyone?s job. Then we heard a yell and saw all these guys running. We followed. There was a firefighter covered by a beam. I helped them get it off of him. There was blood everywhere. We got the beam off and I stepped back to let them all ?do their job.? When my buddy came back over to me there was blood on his face. It wasn?t his. I wiped it off with a towel. Then I began to cry. I was very ashamed of this. I was there to be strong. I was there to lend support. But I couldn?t help it. We walked over to the side, away from all the workers, and he wrapped his arms around me and we cried together. It made me feel much less weak. I saw that this whole thing was really just more than anyone could bare. We finished giving out the water and made our way back to the Red Cross center. On the way back he gave me a beanie baby that his daughter had given him. He told me he wanted me to remember him. And to remember this. And to pray for him. We hugged again and then he walked away. We would never forget each other. I knew that this small amount of time that we had shared together would be forever burned into our brains. I went inside and started making some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Then my legs just went out from under me and I was on the floor before I knew what was going on. They took me to the Red Cross break room. I felt emptier than I ever had before or ever felt since. Suddenly in the doorway was my fireman and a friend of his. His friend gave me a rosary. My guy patted my back and told me he knew I would be fine. Then he ventured out back onto the ash covered ground. I told them I had to go home. I couldn?t take being there. I got on the subway. That?s when I blacked out. I was in shock. I remember suddenly coming back into my body somewhat and the doors to the subway opened. I just got out. I didn?t know where I was and I wasn?t concerned about it. I walked aimlessly for a very long time. I tried to ask people where I was but I couldn?t talk. My mouth would move but no sound would come out. They would stare at me and talk to me but I wasn?t even hearing anything. I didn?t know what was going on but I wasn?t worried. I was as lost on the inside as I was on that street, so in my utter self abandonment, it didn?t matter where I was. A cab stopped. The cabbie got out and asked me if I knew where I was going. I shook my head. He slowly walked me to his cab and started to drive. He told me I was in a bad part of town. ?You could have gotten shot,? he said. He asked me my name and I had no idea what it was. He asked me where I was staying and the best I could do was say ?At my friend?s. Its by a bar with a purple awning.? He drove me around for over and hour while I came enough into my senses for him to figure out where he needed to get me. When we got in front of the building he stopped in the middle of the road got out and took my keys from me. He unlocked the front door of the building and walked me to the apartment. He pointed at the door and asked me if anyone was there. I said yes. He handed me the keys, knocked on the door, said ?Thank you and God Bless,? and disappeared down the hall. When one of the people I was with opened the door, the look in her eyes scared me. She looked at me like she had no idea who I was. When I looked in the mirror I knew why. 1) I was covered in ash from head to toe except for a circle on my face where my face mask had been. And 2) My eyes were empty. There was no twinkle. No life. It scared me. I took a bath which I sat in until the water was freezing. When I stood up and the water ran off of me it still left behind a film of ash. So I had to take a shower. I looked in the mirror and my eyes looked a little better. But the smell was filling the room. It was in my cloths. So I threw the shirt, jeans, socks, and underwear out of the window. I wanted them away from me. I wanted to lose that smell. I never thought I would see my firefighter again. Until tonight when I was watching a show on TV about the Red Cross?s work with September 11th. Suddenly there was a picture on the screen of me and my fireman walking by the rubble with our boxes of water. In the picture we were looking each other in the eyes and smiling. It was taken from behind. It froze me to see it. Suddenly it all came back to me. The look of it, his voice, and more than anything the smell. And I cried. Harder than I have in awhile. And I prayed for him, just like he asked. And I prayed to God that I would never be confronted with that picture again. Its still too fresh. It will still be that way in fifty years. That picture held a million memories I never wanted. And worst of all, it was permeated in that smell. But my heart has always belonged to New York. Our family, being Military has always kept our pride in our America very close to our hearts. One of my fondest memories of my childhood, the pillars of our financial prowess, was the target of unspeakable murderous intent. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I live in Southern Indiana, where my day began early on September 11, 2001. My husband and I had made plans to go out one of the lakes just outside Louisville, Ky. We arrived at the boat rental office about 5 til 9am. As we walked in the door, the TV was on and was telling how a plane had hit the World Trade Center. My best friend, my husband and I just stood there in shock. We continued to watch and speculate about how and why it happened, when suddenly another plane hit the other tower. I don't think anyone said anything for quite a few minutes. The only way to explain what was going on in my head is that for the first time in my 22 years, I thought of the U.S. as being volnerable. I have been pretty patriotic all of my life, but in that moment, the love for my country and the people in it grew in a way I never thought possible. We decided that if this was a terrorist attack then the worst thing we could do (having no means to go to the sight and help in that manner) would be to change our day and turn around and go home. We thought that if the world was going to war, it may be the last chance to have a relaxing day on the lake. We left on the boat before we heard about the Pentagon. When we came back about 5 hours later, we heard about the Pentagon and the plane in Pennsylvania. We rushed home to call relatives immediately. My best friend and myself having many family and friends in the DC Metro area who are directly associated with the Pentagon. We were blessed to find that none of our family or friends were injured. Also, my father-in-law, we found out, was on a bus on his way to the hotel right next to the Twin Towers when the first plane hit. From his account, the people on the bus took a vote to turn around. Thank goodness. My husband's cousin also worked at the WTC, and had just walked out of the subway when the first plane hit, and ran back into the tunnel and back onto the train, narrowly escaping falling glass and debris. It has not been until a year later that I have been able to come close to grasping the enormousness of the event. After having the media repeat the crashes over an over again, I believe I became dull to the reality of it. I didn't want to believe that so many Americans could be killed in one such horrific event. I cannot express my sorrow for the lives that were lost that day. Also, the innocence of our generation. Also I have fought with not knowing how I should feel and if I have a right to cry. So many people lost parents, children, spouses, and friends, that I feel that I should be grateful for not losing anyone close to me. Yet, at the same time I think about all of the people who lost their lives and all of the lives that won't be touched by these many we lost. All of the children who won't be born, all of the important progresses that won't be made because the people who were to make them are no longer here. We have lost more than we can ever imagine. I can't help but cry for my children who will grow up wondering when the next attack will happen, something I never thought about as a child. I just hope that our country will not forget the passion, generousity, and true patriotism we have found this past year. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My husband and I sat with butterflies in out stomachs as we waited to see the doctor on September 11th, 2001 at 8:40 am. On the day before, I had taken an over-the-counter pregnancy test, and it was positive. The news was on in his office and reporters were everywhere on the screen. Suddenly, the news showed a picture of the first tower burning and stated that a plane had just hit it. I remember thinking, "what a horrible accident." My husband and I chatted a bit, guessing what could have caused such a freak commotion. Then, to our complete surprise and disgust, the second plane hit. Immediately,we knew this was no accident. Here we were anxiously awaiting to confirm our news and celebrate the new life we were bringing into the world, the miracle we had been given, as so many others were dying as we sat there. Our emotions completely torn-uncertainty, anger, saddness, hatred, surprise, dread, guilt, anxiety. And ironically, happiness, thrill, joy, love, exuberance, peace. The day for us was one of definite uncertainty. We wanted so much to share our great news...our new life. But how could we when so many were in mourning-guessing the future of our great country? My husband and I (me especially) have this past year learned to count our blessings...count them one by one. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember taking my new convertible on that day, sky was clear and I was returning to my home in northern Virginia. I just received a call on my cell phone from my Dad who works for FEMA telling me to have a good week and take care of myself. After I hung up, turned the radio on, I heard "WASHINGTON DC is under siege," "The WTC was attacked." And my first instinct was to call my family, cell phones didn't work. Within a couple of minutes I went from enjoying a beautiful relaxed day to a state of terror. Most of my family works for the government or in Washington/Arlington and so do my friends, my best friend works for the Pentagon. I quickly went to my apartment to see what was going on, my dad and girlfriend had called my home line and urged me to escape the area and return to their home an hour and a half away. I did. I only took the things with me that I needed and could not live without: my guitar, my elephant, some clothes, and music. All of my life I have lived with the rule of never taking anyone or anything for granted, and that's the way I liked to like life without regrets and with appreciation. I am the type who likes to spend a weekend blowing money on pizzas to feed to the poor that's just me. But That day I felt a loss of innocence. I felt that I could have spent a little more time enjoying things and people. I did see this country pull together and unite though. Everyone in my household went out and volunteered at the Red cross and gave blood, and so did so many other households. As much as we are accused of being money hungry capitalists we can come together without a second thought or personal reward in a time of crisis. I am proud to be a citizen of this country. since Sept 11 I have focussed more on my family and life as a whole, I took the time to tell people I had lost contact with that I love them. Life has been slower and thus more enjoyable. And though our innocence was lost and unity and strength was gained. I turned on the radio station, and it was odd that a radio station that normally doesn't have news segments had a newsbreak. It announced that two planes, one each, had crashed into the World Trade Center and one crashed into the Pentagon and that we were under attack. I didn't view any video of the attacks until I went home after work. My thoughts were we were near Norfolk Naval Base and the possibility we could come under attack." Q:Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. A:"It definitely has changed, for instance, we had plans to fly during the Christmas break and we cancelled our plans. So we now travel less." Q:What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? A:"We should remember from 9/11 that we no longer feel that we cannot be attacked because we are so far away from our enemies. This showed me we can be attacked from within our own borders. I remeber where I was and what I was doing when I found out. I had to go into work late that day becasue my daughter had a dr's appointment. My daughter was watching catoons and I was in the bathroom geting ready for the day. The phone was ringing and the caller had hung up by the time I got there. I checked the messages and it was my mom on the phone. She was crying. She said that the pentagon had been bombed and the our country was under attack. At that time we didn't really know that an airplane had hit it. I hung up the phone and ran to the t.v. When I turned it on I saw the world trade center. The reporter said that an airplane had crashed into it. I got scared I didn't know what was going to happen next. I sat there and watched in shock. As I sat there and watched the 2nd plane crashed into the other tower. I started to cry and my daughter asked me what was wrong. I explained to her that 2 airplanes crashed into the buildings on T.V. I didn't go into to much detail w/ her @ that time, I guess becasue I was kind of in shock. We sat there and watched the T.V. until it was time to leave for the Dr. When we got to the Dr's office the T.V.'s were on and everyone was standing there staring. It was almost like you couldn't look away. I think people were so shocked . It was like it wasn't real. I went and dropped off my daughter @ school. I went to work. At the time I was working @ The Embassy Suites Hotel in Brookfield WI. I walked into work and walk to my office and turned on the radio and tried to carry on with business as usual as much as possible. I worked as a sales/catering assistant. I became flooded w/ calls from clients canceling there events becasue all flights were cxled and no one could get to us. We even had 1 event scheduled for Morgan Stanley who's main office occupied a floor in the world trade center. We spoke to the cooridinator of the event who told us that so far they had not accounted for everyone but their office was on a lower floor. After that call I had some thing s to take up to the front desk. I walk with my hands full of papers and such and headed for the front. There was a crowd of people at the elevator wich there usally is. I paid no attention and walk through concentrating on not dropping all my papers and I ran right into someone. Looked up and there stood George & Barbara Bush.I was shocked. The look on my face probally told them that. All I saw was Mr. & Mrs. Bush smiling and the secert service guys laughing at me. I managed to say escuse me sir. Then I walked away wondering why George & Barbara Bush are standing in my lobby. I later found out that they had been in the air and had to land and Milwaukee was the nearset place to land. I think they ended up @ Emabassy because we had the seceret service at the hotel before when the President was in town. What amazed me was how come the both of them were. They sat in the restaurant and had lunch, walked through the hotel taking pictures w/ people. I think I would have been in a little more of a panic w/ what was going on. I think one of the hardest parts about this whole thing was explaing to my 5 year old daughter what happened. It was hard to explain to her why people would do that. She didn't understand why someone was so mad at us. No matter how I explained so a 5 year old would understand it, it just didn't make sense to her. I tried to keep what she saw on t.v. to a minimum but she was still scared. She would ask me if we caught the bad guys. I would try to assure her that the bad guys were not going to hurt us and her answer was how do you know. The truth was I didn't know. It was a horrible thing that happened to our counrty but I am a firm believer in what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. I think in this case it applies to our country. God Bless America!!! Tell us your story: It was around eight in the mornign and school had just started. i didnt feel well so i decided to call home. when i got to the addence office i remeber watching the tv and i watched the first plane hit at first i remeber thinking where is that whats happening. i then talked to my grandma who came to pick me up. i wiated outside the school still not understanding what was going on. when i got into her van i hed it that a plane hit one of the towers in new york before this i never even remebered hearing about these two towers. when i got home anouther had hit shortly before. i remeber walking in the door and my mom just grabing me and holding me as if she had just pulled me out of the towers and then we lay down on the couch and cryed as we watched the news on this horible tragedy un fold. i lay and watched as people were jumping from the buildings and dieing then it happend something i would have never thought it calapsed my mom cryed and i remeber thinking to myself what is going on why us and shortly before that more news of anouther attack but nt on the towers but on the very building that was suppose to be the safest the pentagon. i thought are we going to make it through this is america going to stand stronge and live. then shortly after the first one there it goes the second. it felt like only a few seconds had passed sence the first. i wasnt watching the time i was watching the living nightmare that just turned into a horor. at that point i had no tears left i could not cry all i could do is just pray.pray that america gets through this. i watched the news the entire day trying to understand what i had just witnessed. when all of my family had arived home form school and work i remeber everyone talking about there day and how the news was broke to them and all of my siblings i remeber them saying classes did not happen we watched in every class dieing people. i know my memories of that day will never go away everytime this day comes up in conversation i revistit americas worst nigthmare and remeber not mylife as it was before that but what it was at the very moment i saw the picture on the screen at my school what i herd and what i watched at home and how it chaged my family and my life. Terrorists hijacked four commercial flights and ran them into different buildings in America. The World Trade Center and the Pentagon were hit. Both World Trade Center towers collapsed after being hit. Over 5,000 people died in the attacks. This event has affected our nation more than any other in history. I awoke that Tuesday morning to the sound of my alarm reminding me that I had to get ready for the President?s inauguration. As we were getting ready, my roommate, Wes?, cell phone rang. His conversation consisted of several, ?no ways? and ?wows?. He then proceeded to turn on the television which showed the World Trade Center towers. One of them had evidently been run into by an airplane. At first, my thought was that it was an accident, but I soon found out otherwise. Another plane then proceeded to run into the other tower. I was shocked and amazed that this was happening. The television also flashed to the Pentagon where another airplane had crashed into it. As much as I wanted to stay and watch what was going to happen next, I had to go to the inauguration in order to get the double chapel credit that I had originally waken up so early to achieve. Upon arrival, I overheard several people talking about what happened in New York. Some people were finding out for the first time and were finding it hard to believe. I had a lot of time to think during the inauguration, so I did. I was finding it hard to believe that this had happened in the so-called invincible United States of America. I didn?t understand how we could let something like this happen. I felt like it was all just some story that happened in some other country, the past, or in some terrible movie, but it wasn?t. This happened on that day and in New York and at the Pentagon. It was all very hard to believe. I went back to the dorm after the inauguration and turned on the TV to CNN. I had come to find out that both of the towers had collapsed and that the odds of there being any survivors were very slim. Also, another plane that had been hijacked crashed in Pennsylvania and was evidently on its way to Camp David before falling from the sky. They mentioned that a man named Osama Bin Laden was responsible for conducting these evil acts of terrorism. I had never heard of him before, but they proceeded to explain that he was also responsible for other attacks in America prior to these. Why was this man still alive? I was wondering. He should be dead and gone, but I found out that he had been in hiding for several years and that the military had no idea where he could be. At this point, the government was not sure he was responsible for the attacks, but he was definitely the prime suspect. I was still having trouble believing that all this had actually happened. How and why did these people want to destroy others and themselves? What had America done to these people for them to do this to us? The following five or six days were spent, when not in school, watching the television to see if anything else had or was going to happen and what we were going to do about it. Within a day, most of the people that had hijacked the plane had been identified. I was amazed how quickly they were discovered. Each terrorist had their own story of how they took flying lessons in the U.S. and managed to get away the murders. It was amazing how simple these people made it seem to do what they had done. They simply took the courses on how to fly, bought some box cutters, knives, and tickets on an airplane. I was surprised at how smart this Ben Laden character was to think of such a scheme. He had to be a very smart man and put a lot of thought into these attacks. The search for survivors continued throughout the following week. All hope was eventually given up and over 5,000 people were listed as dead. I was very angry when I realized how real this was. My science teacher, Dr. McNair told our class about his brother who worked at the Pentagon. He was at a meeting that day and had he been in his office would be dead. I was really wishing that Bin Laden was dead or that we would catch him and kill him. After hearing my very wise history teacher, Dr. Fink, talk on forgiveness and how God could touch Bin Laden?s heart and change it, made me change my mind. I have had my share of second and third and fourth chances, and Bin Laden deserves his too. I had heard several rumors of war and it scared me. Many of my friends were talking about the draft and stuff, and I had and have no desire to fight in a war. Neither did any of my friends. I talked to my Mom and Dad about it a little bit and they made a very good point that no government official had mentioned the draft. Only the media and the public had talked about it. That assured me a little bit, but it was pretty obvious that we were going into war because of some things that President Bush had said. And I knew that it was going to be a long war since it was a war against ?terrorism? and not a specific country. So, eventually there would probably be a draft. In addition to all that, a lot of what was going on made me think of the end times and Revelation. The Bible talks about that in the end times, there will be wars and rumors of wars and that made me happy and that brought out a mix of emotions. I am ready to go to Heaven, but there are several things that I want to do before I die or go to Heaven. I also was scared at the thought of this being the end times. What is going to happen? Will the anti-Christ appear suddenly? Tons of unanswerable questions flooded my mind. As the days went by, I watched our nation turn to God for answers. It was very shocking, but awesome. What Satan thought would completely destroy our country, turned out to be just what it needed. Prayer was being heard all around the country; at schools, at sporting events, and by our President. I think this is something that our nation was in desperate need of. We were and still are not a Christianity based nation like God would want, but anything is a start. I think to comfort the parents, more so then the kids.My son Vic was only in his class 5-10 mins. when my cell phone rang. It was my husband ,who is a New York City Police Officer, calling to telling me that 2 planes had hit the trade centers.He sounded concerned but not sure how concerned he should be, until he heard the words I guess he was thinking I might say..."My mother works there...my mother works at the World Trade Center". At this point he was speechless and I was frantic. He had to go, but he was going to call me back soon. He told me not to worry, til there was something to worry about. Once he realized what was going on he lost it. I couldn't reach my younger brother, because he was at work.I knew he dropped my mom at work every morning at the trade center, before going on to his job in Jersey City. I thought maybe he knew something.By this time I want to explode so I got Vic and headed home. On the way I heard reports that all the bridges and tunnels and highways were closed.So, I was trapped on long island, not that I could do anything if I was able to leave.I just felt helpless. Everything was so out of control and no matter how I tried ,I couldn't get even an inch of control over the situation, which made me crazy.When I got home I called a neighbor to come and....I'm still not sure what I wanted her to do, but I called her and she came. Somehow everyone on my block was at my house, trying to help, make me feel better, but the images on the T.V. contradicted every hopeful word they tried to give me.I remember shaking at some point that I thought I would have a heart attack.I needed to hear that my mother was okay,that even if she was hurt,she would be alright.Iremember when the first tower fell, my world stopped .For a brief moment I heard nothing but an echo of myself crying. I was losing it. A person everyone swore was the rock,she handle anything,starting to crumble.I needed to go get my other two children out of school.Now my mind was racing.I needed to protect what I could. I knew that my older brother and husband were fine. At this point my younger brother called me from his job in Jersey. I didn't even recognize his voice, it was a sound I had never heard before. He had seen the whole thing from across the water. All he could say to me was "I dropped her off at work...where is she?...where is she?" I din't know what floor she was on. It never seemed important to know.I sent my kids to a neighbor up the block, to try and shield them from me. I never thought I could be a bad influence on my own kids until that day.I didn't want them there.By now the secon building had fallen and I had still not heard anything. I couldn't take much more. My cousin had calledto try to get some form of information.My mother had been a mother to her and she was to get married the next month, but the joyous occasion was lostin the maylay and cries"What will I do without her....what will I do without her!". I had no answers for myself, let alone anyone else.I stared so hard at the T.V. screen that my head hurt,trying to see her running from this horror.But the harder I started, the more insane it made me.I think on some level I tried to convince myself ,that this was not real.I thought maybe this would help me stay sane.Hours had passed and not a word.My husband called on a regular basis to see if I had heard from her. It was about 6 hours later, my phone rang and it was my sister-in-law, to spread the news that she had heard from my mother she was okay. At this point I burst into tears of joy....it was over, she's okay. I was even slightly happier alittle later when I had spoken to her in person, and even happier still when I got to finally go to see her a day or two later, when the roads finally opened.In my 33 years on this earth I never thought I could ever feel as much relief as I did the day I got to hug my mother for the first time after the attacks.IT WAS UNDESCRIBABLE! I was crying because i have half of my generation in uptown manhattan i was so upset. I told my mom if we could go in 2 weeks she said yes so we did i saw smoke everywhere. I really hoped my family was okay and they were. My uncle cleans the windows of some the buildings especially WTC . That day my uncle came late . I was sitting in my office discussing the resurfacing of the flight deck on the USS Roosevelt. We had CNN on, and they interupted their scheduled programs to bring live coverage of the WTC and Pentagon attacks. 2.Has your life changed because of September 11th? If so, tell us how. Yes. It seems that we have a lot more support from the American public for the military than we had previously. While the country suffered a great loss, it does, in some ways, seem to have brought many groups of Americans closer. 3.What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Despite the day-to-day tribulations (i.e. bad traffic, long lines...) we are one country and can rise as a whole to any occasion...as one country. It was demonstrated in Pennsylvania, the Pentagon, and the WTC that any American amy be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. 4.Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? We flew the American flag after September 11th, on September 11th, and before September 11th. The American flag is, and always has been, a symbol of our country's greatness- I will always feel pride, respect, and at the same time a sense of loss for those who have lost their lives in defense of the flag and the country it represents. Tell us your story: I had gone to work earlier then usual that morning (around 7:30AM (Central Daylight Time) but was stuck in traffic trying to cross the bridge across the Mississippi from Illinois into downtown St. Louis. I was listening to the radio when a report of the first plane hitting the 1st tower came over the air. I called my wife at home from my cell phone to see if there was any television coverage of the incident. She was watching the "Today" show, and they were obviously breaking their normal routines to cover the what was originally thought to be an accident. My wife described the thick black smoke from the tower and the huge flames. I was perplexed to hear this as the first radio reports suggested that only a small plane had hit. While on the phone with my wife, the 2nd plane hit the South tower. She screamed over the phone "Oh my God" over an over again. Immediately, we both knew this was no accident. By this time, my location in traffic was on the middle of the Poplar Street Bridge (with 1000's of others), and was staring at the nearby St. Louis Arch thinking "would this be another target"?. The rest of the day, and days to follow, we were consumed by the terror of that awful day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I wass driving to my job. Like I had done every morning listening to the radio. When I was just about there the report came on that a plane had hit the world trade center. At first I thought it was a joke. I had heard of little planes brushing the world trade center so I figured that must have been what happened. The more the reports came in thats when I realized that this was no joke and no small plane. As I sat at work that day I was almost numb. It didnt feel like I was living a reality but rather a dream. The office closed early that day. When I arrived home and turned on the TV my reality hit me again and again. The questions that ran through my mind were how do I explain to my children what had happened and how do I convince them they are safe when at this point I dont feel very safe myself? Here I am 2 years later realizing nobody is always safe I am feeling for those small children who have lost the ones so dear to them. Thankful every day for my children and proud of the relationship I have with them and will never take that for granted. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was home in bed when a friend of mine called and told me what was happening. I watched the news while talking on the phone to among others my cousin who was working at the world trade center and fortunatley was running late for work and my brother who is a police officer in NYC and said he was heading in early just in case he was needed. After watching the towers fall on television i headed up to the roof of my apartment building where i used to be able to see the towers on a clear day. As i watched the thick smoke rising across the city I heard a loud roaring coming across the sky from behind me and looked up to see a pair of fighter jets heading south into the city. At the time, the first thought that came to me was all the action movies i had seen in my life, that i thought were so ridiculous, did not measure up to what was unfolding right in front of me, a silly thing to be thinking of i suppose but it was the first thing i thought of. Unfortunatley as it turned out i knew two people from the police department and one fireman who were killed that day as well as my parents next door neighbor who never made it off his office floor.
