Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was a beautiful morning in Indianapolis. I awoke to my alarm at about 7:30 and slowly got out of bed to walk my dog. When walking him I was thinking to myself what a beautiful September day we had been blessed with. The skies were clear, the sun was shining bright, and there was a cool breeze. After walking my dog, I hopped in the showere and started to prepare for work. I usually arrive around 9:00 and as far I remember was on pace to do the same this Tuesday morning. I don't often have time to watch the television in the morning, I did not today either. I walked out to my car oblivious as to what had and was transpiring. I always leave my radio in my car on, so as soon as the car started, the radio did as well. I have no recollection as to what station was on at the time, the only thing I remember hearing was "there is now talk that they are going to evacuate the Sears Tower" in Chicago. I remember thinking, oh no, something is going on. My boss is not strict about when people arrive at work and thus I decided to run back up stairs, turn on the tv and see what was happening. I was in disbelief at what I saw. The first tower had already been hit....it was a horrific site. I believe I was watching NBC, but I can't be sure. At the time, it just seemed as a fluke, a misguided plane, an accident. While watching the coverage, the second plane hit the second tower. "What the hell (probably not the actual word I used) is going on". At this point, people were starting to realize this was not an accident, this was intentional. Around this same time, they were also reporting that two other planes were missing, or were off course. I believe, inbetween the two planes hitting the World Trade Center towers, the 2nd or 3rd plane, depending on how you look at it, had hit the pentagon. I was speechless, scared, angry, frightened. What was happening to our country, who was doing this, and why. A 4th planes, then crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, luckily, not hitting anything on the ground, but still taking more innocent people on board that plane to their untimely deaths. I had no concept of time at this point, I was in shock, I was in hell. Then, the first tower collapsed, followed by the second. All the innocent people, why God, why? I remember thinking how many of those people in the towers were probably just like me....young professionals, just wanting to do their job and do it well. A world of opportunity was at our fingertips, and now it was all taken away from them. How easily that could have been me, or my friends. Shortly thereafter, I started feeling concern for people I know in New York City, I knew they lived downtown, did they work there, did they have the day off, were the on vacation, what? I called my dad, "Is this really happening?", "Is this on your tv too, or am I having a nightmare?" I wondered if I too had died, and this was my own personal hell, watching this. Unfortunately, my dads voice of reason confirmed my worst fears. I was screaming at the top of my lungs, I couldn't understand why this was happening, was it over, what was next, is this war? I had lived in a Leave it to Beaver world for 26 years, I was not used to this sort of suffering and pain, I had no idea how to deal with it. I wanted to fight these people, I wanted a gun, I wanted revenge. I was glued to the tv for the next 36 hours, I didn't go to work, didn't go my boss, nothing. I might have walked my dog once, that was it. I was afraid to leave. Sometime later in the day, talking with one of my friends, I found out a friend of ours worked in one of the towers. I prayed and prayed for her safety. I did not know her well, but when we were together, we always had fun. She was a beautiful, free spirit who had always dreamed of living in New York City. Watching all the coverage was gut wrenching, all the people walking around with pictures of their missing loved ones. How in the world can these people continue, where will they find their strength and resolve? The next few days were a blur, no concept of time or reality. I was obsessed with gathering as much information as I could, even though it hurt. Those few days were filled with a lot of prayer and questions. How could this happen to "us"? Katies family finally had to give up hope that she was gone. How do parents make it through losing a daughter? How would my parents handle the same situation. In Katies memory (and everyone elses for that matter) I put her initials on all my running shoes, and every race I run, I do if for her. I am not the fastest, or in the best shape, but I make it through my runs thinking of her. A marathon is difficult, but is nothing compared to what she and so many others had to go through. I love you Katie, and the Chicago Marathon this year is especially for you. This morning (9/11/02) has an eerie feeling, it was just as beautiful as last years when I awoke. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember waking up that morning and getting dressed for work. I remember saying to my husband, "Today is 9-1-1." Of all the years of my life that the 9-1-1 emergency system was in place and September 11th has come, I had never said that. "Today is 9-1-1." Later that morning, a co-worker told me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. When she said it, it was like I was in the twilight zone. Like I was in a movie or something. It wasn't real. I immediately got on the phone and the Internet and started checking news resources. A few minutes later, I heard someone coming down the hall say that another plane had crashed into the other tower. At that precise moment, it hit me. Reality crushed me and I felt a fear like none I can remember ever having had before or since. When I heard about the pentagon, I felt threatened and afraid for those who worked there and for our President. When I heard that the tower had fallen, I felt pain. And I just wanted to be with my family. That's all. I remember my boss trying to be sympathetic, but trying to get done what work absolutely had to get done before I left. I remember feeling a building pressure that I needed to go home, and the longer I stayed there, the more anxious I felt about leaving. When I heard on MSNBC.com that another plane had crashed in Pennsylvania, the emotion simply became too great. The impact of what was happening was bitterly overwhelming, and I could not stay at work any longer. I needed to be with the people who were most important to me. I remember crying on my way home. Listening to the radio, and feeling mournful for the senseless loss of so many lives. I remember wishing I could be there to help those desperate and lost people who were taking the longest walk of their lives to get home, who were putting out fires and trying to save lives. I wanted to be there to help them. I wanted to reach out and hold them and cry with them. All I could do was give to the American Red Cross. So we gave what we could, which wasn't much, but it was all we had. We watched TV for the next several days. I went to work the next day wearing all black mourning the lives lost. So many. So senseless. I hurt deeply. The following day, I wore my patriotic red, white, and blue. My coworkers and I discussed it time and time again. There was no healing. There was bitterness and anger and pain and despair. Ours was an international facility. We had workers from all over the world. We tried to maintain a sense of community or at least tolerance at work, but the workers were feeling the same things we were. Some felt fear. Some hatred. This was a profoundly difficult time for all of us. Flags could not be found, so we got on our computers and made t-shirts at home. Even one for our baby. We were "Proud to be American" because of what it meant. Because of how these times brought us together as a people in a way that only tragedy can. We struggle for civil rights and human rights all the time within. A fight within a family is not an unordinary thing. But when someone attacks the family from outside, the family must come together to protect itself and every single one of its members. That's what America did. That's what made us proud. That's what makes me proud today. I lit candles with the nation in remembrance of so many who died, so many whose lives were changed by this brutal stupidity. I lit candles with the nation in a display of hope and solidarity that none could shatter. I lit candles with the nation in the promise of patriotism, a reaffirmation that this country is my home -- my motherland. The land of the free, dammit. And the home of the brave. When i had started to eat breakfast my mom had told me something bad had happened in New York this morning. At first i hadn't paid any attention to her but when i got to school everybody had been talking about 2 airplains and 2 buildings and we recieved a letter from our principal telling us not to be worried.I still didnt understand after that, It was horrable. When i got home my mom told me about it and explained it in depth she had told me it was like the bombing that happened in oklahoma city but 100s of times worse. the only reason i knew about the bombing in oklahoma was because my dad was in oklahoma city the same time the bombing happened. When my mom had finished explainig i had felt soooo bad for the people that me and my friends had wrote letters to the people who were hurt and my teacher mailed them for us. still today i don't exactly know what happened being all the way from there. I saw what happened on the news just before I was leaving for my dancelesson. The entire bus-ride was filled with thoughts. When I came home every channel on TV was showing the terrible action. It scares me that people are capable to do terrible things like that. The next couple of weeks this was all over the news. After a while, it kind of slipped our minds. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work. Someone came in and told us that there had been an "accident" in the City. Someone got a video tape of the first plane hitting the Tower and we have a TV here in the Art Dept (it's not connected to the outside by plays tapes). A bunch of us watched in horror. Then we heard that the second plane hit and we knew it was no accident. It was scary because I work in a "defense oriented" business next to Republic Airport on Long Island. The president of our company came over the intercom and told us we could leave if we wanted to. We didn't know what was going to happen especially after hearing about the "other planes". My friend worked for Solomon Smith Barney near WTC and I was worried about her all day. She ran for her life and met her husband in Brooklyn. She saw people jumping from the Towers from her window at SSB and cannot get the images out of her head. Today she is home but will not watch TV or listen to the radio. Vinny DiFazio, my sister's nephew through marriage worked in the tower so around lunchtime I went to my sister's house where we and her kids and their wives all waited for word of Vincent. He was in the first bombing and we saw him walk out of the building on TV. His mother said he told her "a bomb had hit and he was getting out." He worked at Cantor Fitzgerald. We waited all day for word. That night, 9/11/01, my sister and I lit a candle for Vinny. We could see the smoke from NYC out here on the island...we saw all the people lighting candles on corners and in parking lots. We waited for a week or so and no word of Vinny, we knew he was gone. Then his wife had a memorial service in New Jersey. We drove past the site of the where the Towers had stood and smoke was still pouring out. There was tons of emergency traffic and we saw the huge trailer trucks carrying twisted pieces of steel. Vinny coached a lot of soccer teams so his teams were all at his service, over 1,000 people showed up. Some didn't even know him. They played his favorite songs and the prest gave a moving sermon. His cousin on the other side of the family, Sal Lopes, also worked for C-F and also died that day. God Bless America, land of the free and the brave. I woke up and as I went to the kitchen to make myself a sandwich, I turned on the tv. I was changing the channels to see what they were giving. When I happend to pass the cartoons so instead I decided to put the news to see what they were giving. A sign came up and said breaking news and the news caster said that two palnes just flew into the Twin Towers. As I heard the news I almost choked on my sandwich. When my mother walked into the kitchen I had told her waht had happend. Then me and my mother started talking about how horrible it was. My life hasn't relly changed dramatically,it did change in some ways. Now I am afraid to go on airplanes because I think something horrible might happened. I was afraid to go to the mall to shop because something horrible might of happend. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I pastor a small church in Westport, MA, and also do computer consulting work from home, often working all night. I'd only been asleep a few hours when the phone rang the morning of Sept. 11--my son, calling from his job as cook in a retirement center. He told me a fantastic story about a plane crashing into the WTC, and I guessed a small plane. He told me it was a passenger plane. I refused to believe it...what professional pilot couldn't miss a building that big? Someone must pulling a hoax. He told me it was on the television and I should listen--but being sleep-deprived, I groggily said "Later, I will," and hung up. I said a prayer for all who were caught up in whatever was happening, sank back into sleep. It can have been only a few minutes before my "semi-son," who stays with us, called from his workplace. His voice was excited, urgent--"Ma! Wake up and turn on the tv! Two planes hit the WTC! We're being attacked!" That woke me up. Turning on CNN, I saw the horrible pictures now so familiar to all of us, and felt sickened. Just one week earlier my son and his girlfriend had returned from a European trip. I'd dropped them off at Logan Airport, and picked them up there--with horrible premonitions of an airline crash. For months, each time I looked at an airplane, I "saw" it covered by lines as if it had been torn apart and pieced back together. I chided myself for my premonitions, but was so relieved when they were safely off the plane! That day I called the firm in Cambridge I'd been doing extra work for and told them I wouldn't be in...I needed to be at my church. I started making contact with parishioners, to hold a 7 PM prayer service. I found that one of our Westport mothers, not a member of our church but connected through her daughter to church members, was a flight attendant on American Airlines 11, and was missing. Diane Snyder died that day when her plane crashed into the WTC. The MA Conference of the United Church of Christ had liturgies and prayers posted as resources for churches and pastors by that afternoon, which was a blessing. The following weeks have been difficult--no less so for pastors, as we struggled to deal with our own sense of loss and the enormity of raw evil exposed that day, while still seeking and offering the love and peace that faith should untimately embrace. We endure, and may God turn and transform even this evil into something that might point toward the good. We didnt really think anything of it until our teacher came back in the room. Our teachers face wasnt smiling like he always use too, he said that the Word Trade Towers were hit by a plane. We didnt really hear anything until we got home. I ran out of the car and my mom wasnt home so I went next door. We turned on the tv and saw people jumping from the towers I was in great distress. I thought to myself why would any one ever do this? but I knew that God was in Control. No matter what happens God will always protect us. I must have watched the news the most that day a day in which history happened. Even through bad times I knew God had purpose with this. He called after the first plane hit to tell me he was OK, he said he loved me and the kids and that was the last time I heard his voice. The rest of the day is a blur of feeling so cold and trying to warm up in the sun as the fighter jets flew overhead. I spoke to so many people who hoped I had gotten word from him, but I never did. People tried to make sure I was OK and took care of the children, but I was not OK. I just wanted him to come home. I sat on my front steps waiting for him to walk around the corner from the train, many did come, but not him. My husband Thomas of eight years, the father of our two children (2 and 4 months) was gone. I had known him for 22 years, began dating at 13, we had grown up together, what would I do without him... I got to school around 9, completly unaware of the drama that was unfolding around our country. In homeroom I heard one of the gym teachers remark "there has been an explosion at the World Trade Center" but I shrugged it off as propaghanda until I got to my first hour and saw the images of the second plane smashing into the South Tower. I was in utter shock, to say the least, and my class watched in awe as the buildings crashed to the ground. My teacher, overwhelmed with grief, turned off the television... and with that, the lights went out. All the power in the school was gone, but we were not informed why until days after. It suddenly occured to me that my aunt was only blocks away from all the chaos in New York; she works a few blocks from the towers. Frantically I tried to get ahold of my mom but to no avail. Finally my mom came to the school and picked me up, saying that she had been on the phone with my aunt as the second plane hit and that is why I could not get through to her. I was checked out and had to sit in horror on the couch, watching the story unfold. It was a bitter blow to my family as we found out news of hundreds of firefighter casualties. All of my mom's cousins who were men were firefighters, and we would not find out if they were alive or not for several days because everyone was trapped in the city. The rest of that day was so numbing. I sat emotionless on the couch, hoping that this was all a horrific dream and that at any moment, I would wake up and all would be safe again. But as time passed it was revealed that reality was more devastating than we could ever imagine. I've shed so many tears for those lost; been so proud of those who stood out as heroes; seen so many pictures of people who had perished beneath the rubble. Eerily, in the summer of 2001, I had visited 3 places: Washington, DC, New York City, and Pennsylvania. I was relieved that I got to see all three places while they were still in their prime. All I can do now is pray that America has the strength to recover... and I know we will prevail. This would be an event that would affect the lives of people near and far. Many were lost in this attack but many were also saved by todays hero's. While all this chaos was going on I was sitting in my second period class at the Bellevue Jr. High in Bellevue, Ohio. When the news came on we were all lost in confusion. Not knowing what was going on or what would happen next we all watched and listened in anticipation. Tell us your story: I was already in school, Computer Science, kind of a drowsy 8:00 am class that drags on the morning, kind of your typical first class. We were all just sitting there, the whole class when someone in our class with spikey blonde hair who was late comes running in his eyes wide telling everyone that planes had crashed into the World Trade Center Towers, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania. Everyone kind of stopped everything they were doing, and it took a while for such an extreme thought to enter their heads. Everything I ever knew about planes, New York, the Pentagon, terroism, every factor involved converged into my first thoughts of; Oh my God, and We're Under Attack. Mr. Mokry, an old teacher who had been teaching at my school since 1969, whom I thought knew everything stayed calm. He asked him more details. These details entered into my head with the flood of fear and anxiety and disbelief. Picturing this was too hard. Soon, Mr. Mokry told us that we must go on with class unless notifyed by the Administrators. I could'nt think of anything else but the tradgedy, trying to picture such an event was beyond me. Finally, I reached my next class which had a TV on. The scope of the entire disaster hit me like a million voices screaming out. It was like I could feel the weight of fear of those two towers full of people. I just sat at my desk mesmerized. Dr. Veach, our principle got on the intercom and told everyone about the events, not going into detail, and trying to keep everything going as normal. Administrators came by and told us to turn off the TV's the teachers however kept most of them on in defiance, as well as radios. In each class, as the news progressed with more information, I became more and more horrifyed. I remember the thoughts mainly of "There are still more planes unaccounted for that may be potential threats." As well as "Oh my God, people are falling from the sky," as many people jumped out of the towers. I was watching sheer madness and chaos. All at once, the world which I knew to be safe became completley uncertain, and horrifying. As the day moved on, I felt more and more purpose. A deeper sense of mourning, as the President addressed everyone, and I started looking for what I could do to help. That was the most tumoltuous day of my life. I noticed that the sky was filled with heavy dark clouds. I woke my 17 year old daughter to get up for school. I had turned on the TV to check what type of weather would happen today. I was making breakfast and my daughter was watching the TV. Suddenly my daughter Heather called to me, Hey Dad the World Trade Center is on Fire. I came into the living room and I looked at the TV in disbelief. I could see the one of the twin towers on fire burning. While I was watching what was happening I saw the second tower get hit by an aircraft. I watched in shock as the second tower exploded in a ball of flames. I was dumb struck when I saw this event happen. I saw it but I could not believe what I was seeing with my own eyes. In that beginning I felt strange the rest of the day. upon listening to the radio and hearing that another plane had hit the Pentagon and another had crashed in Pennsylvania. I went to work that morning and upon learning this was real and the entire world would be changed by this act. At the time we did not know whom would be responsible for this tradegy. I was informed at work that I had to leave and go home. I called my wife and my son in L.A. and my daughter and told them I was leaving work and going home and listen to the news. For many weeks and months I was affected by this event and I must say it has changed my life. Knowing that in God plan this is a reality check. It was my freshman year of highschool and by the time i found out it was 5th period. My history teacher came in and turned the tv on and told us to watch it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just had breakfast with two of my co-workers, Amy and Debbie, in the cafeteria. We were leaving the cafeteria when Amy's cell phone rang. It was her boyfriend, asking if she had heard about the two planes hitting the World Trade Center. We questioned her "Both towers? Is he sure? Someone's putting him on." It seemed impossible. Amy went outside to have a cigarette while Debbie and I continued to the elevator to return to our 6th floor office. We were discussing the possibility of such a thing happening as we got onto the elevator. A man we didn't know asked "Are you talking about those planes that hit the World Trade Center?" This was the moment when I realized that something had really happened. When we reached the sixth floor, there were televisions and radios blaring as people listened to the news. People were lined up against a western window, looking out at smoke from the Pentagon (although I didn't know at the time what they were looking at). I approached one of my co-workers and asked what was happening. There was a lot of misinformation available along with what was later verified. Based on what she had heard on the radio, my co-worker told me that two planes had crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center, a plane had crashed into the Pentagon, the West Wing of the White House was on fire, and a bomb had gone off in front of the Department of State Building. My stomach curled into a hot ball of anxiety and I thought "The Government is under attack and I'm in a Federal Building." I was in a Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, only 4 blocks away from the Murrah building. I'm not shy about seeming paranoid; I figure it's better to be sheepish tomorrow than dead today. I picked up my phone and called my boyfriend, who works in Alexandria, VA. I told him I was leaving the building immediately and asked him if he was going to try to come home or stay put. He didn't want to risk the Metro system until he had a better idea what was going on, so he opted to stay put for the time being. I told him I loved him and to be careful. I slapped a post-it note on my computer screen that said something like "Gone Home" and shut down my computer. I grabbed my handbag and approached the windows where people were watching the smoke from the Pentagon. My manager was there and I informed him that I was going home and I'd do the paperwork on it tomorrow. He just nodded. I saw a few people waiting for an elevator, but I preferred to take the stairs. I wasn't getting on an elevator in a possible emergency situation. I galloped down the stairs. I only saw one or two other people going down. Nobody seemed very concerned. I suppose you could argue that I was over-reacting, but I'm not ashamed of my behavior and I'd do the same thing again in a similar situation. On my way out, I went by both Debbie and Amy's desks, but neither of them were there. As I got closer to the building's exit, I saw a few more people who were obviously evacuating. Maybe 20 or 30 other people seemed to have the idea that it was good to get out of the building. It was another hour or two before the building was officially closed, and I heard from co-workers later that it was a nightmare getting out of the building. With everyone trying to leave at once, it was total gridlock in the parking lot. It was clear and easy when I left. I went home and started watching television. I tried to contact a friend in New York. I couldn't get through, so I sent him an email. I called his sister in Oklahoma to see if she had heard from him yet. I woke her up and told her to turn on her television. She turned it on just moments before the first tower collapsed and she immediately started crying. I reminded her that Eric (her brother) had no reason to be anywhere near the towers, and that it would probably be difficult for him to get a phone line for a while. I felt rotten for waking her up to such bad news. My boyfriend, Paul, called. He was going to try his luck on the Metro. I didn't love the idea of him getting on the Metro, but I knew that it was pointless for me to get into the traffic jam on the beltway to try to come get him. He didn't know how long it would take him to get home, and said he would get a cab from the Metro station. For reasons that I don't clearly remember now, I didn't like that idea. I think I just wanted to see him. So I went to the New Carrollton Metro and waited for over two hours. When he arrived, he didn't see me, and hopped into a cab. I got the cab driver's attention, and Paul came home with me. He said the Metro had been jam-packed with people, and that the National Airport Metro station was closed. As they went past it, he could see uniformed men guarding the entrance. Along the way, he also saw smoke from the Pentagon, and bits of paper swirling through the air. He said it was all very surreal. I was glad to have him home. Like the rest of the nation, we were glued to our televisions most of the day. By late afternoon, I felt sick and dazed, so we decided to go into our back yard and get away from the constant replay of the day's horror. We sat in our leafy back yard under a gorgeous blue sky and had cool drinks. We knew we were among the "lucky ones." We were miles from the actual sites of the attacks; we and our loved ones were safe. But somehow it was difficult to feel lucky that day. It was difficult to feel anything but numb and sick. I still feel that way if I think about it too much. Like most people, though, I've gotten back to normal. I try not to think about it too much, and I hope that there won't be any more attacks. I've done what little I can to make myself feel a bit safer, and I'll continue to be among the first people out of the building at the first sign of danger. Tell us your story: Hi My name is Janelle I have been married for 3 great years to my loving husband who is also in the United States Marine Corps. I remember it like it was yesterday. The night before my husband was leaving to go to Calf. to do cold weather training in the mountians. That night we packed him up and said our good-bye's. He stayed on base that night. I went home and went to bed about 11pm that night. That next morning my mom started yelling at me to get out of bed she kept saying "we are being hit" I did not understand her (she was packed for the the year 2000 in 1998) so I figured she was freaking out like normal. I got of bed and sat in front of the T.V. only the first plane had hit. My mom got in the shower and I was still watching T.V. all of a sudden the second plane hit. I knew then it was bad. My husband's plane had left that morning at 7:45am I had know idea what his plane number was. So I was freaking right along with my mom. Living on a base you would think we would know something. I got in my car and drove to one of my husbands fellow marines mother's house they had no idea what had evan happend. So we got in my car and went back to my house. Driving down the road on what seemed to be the perfect day weather wise could be so bad. When we got back to my house I could not do it any more I started to cry sitting by the phone hoping to hear my husband voice. I did not here his voice for a week they where in the air when it happend thay dropped their plane and went into marine mode. After these last three years every-one has gone back to normal being rude and not thankful for what God has gave us. All I have to say is Thank You God for giving us the men and women who risk their lifes for me to be able to write this or to put a flag in my yard. Wall street was a busy workplace, And fans of Aallyah mourned her death. 12:00 noon America stood united Congressmen equally supported President Bush. Chad and dimple ballots were forgotten.
