Tell us your story: I was siting on the bed watching the today show when the news broke in and said the world trade center is on fire then a min later they said they think it was a plain crash the show went on then they got a live shot of the two towers of the trade center I saw the other plain plying I said to myself don't they see that that plain is flying to low then all of a sudden it flew into the trade center towers and all I could say was O my God, O my God then it was one thing after the other I knew this was bad real bad as the day went on the world seem like anything could happen at any min. and what was next. Next was the pentagon then live shot of a smoking Pentagon everyone look as though they was in a dream and this was not happen. All I could do was get my book and rite a song. My friend was crying and I couldn't believe my eyes upon putting the News on. Being a Native New Yorker and also a Military Spouse I was both horrified for those in my hometown and for my family wondering how this would affect my husband. I will forever have the images in my mind and the pain in my heart but am proud of how our nation had handled matters and even more proud to say that my husband served on Homeland Security at The Pentagon. He was called to duty and responded immediately with so many other without giving it a second thought. I just want to express my profound "THANKS" to all those who wear the Uniform of the United States Army and also want to say that although I was not home in New York, this New Yorker's Heart was there every minute of everyday. When I pick up the phone she started shouting "Turn on your TV!Turn on your TV". I thought that her house was on fire, because in that sunday she had a fire near her house and she almost lost it. I said "calm down, what's happening?", she answered " a comercial plain crashed to TWC". "It's not possible", "there are no commercial flights near the TWC", and immediatly I said "Oh! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was on Sanibel Island, in Florida. I had picked a very strange time of year to visit Southwest Florida. The summer season had just ended and the winter one had not begun. The Ft Meyers area was very strange, almost like a ghost town. Everything was built up for the tourists and, without them there, stores, restaurants, and the hotel I was staying at- everything was empty. This is very convenient because this time of year is also hurricane season. Tropical Storm soon to be Hurricane Gabrielle was brewing in the Gulf and you could feel the chaotic energy in the air. I was down there on business. The type of work I was doing required that I be up all night so, I had been in bed for only about two hours when my wife called from Norway to tell me she had sold her home- the last hurdle we had to make in order for her to be able to come here to live. It was news I had been anxiously waiting for. However, before I could fully feel the joy, she said, "They are flying airplanes into the World Trade Center!" Between her Norwegian accent and my state of somnolence, I did not quite grasp what she was saying. At first, I thought it was a joke and then just an accident but she told me there had been four crashes and bade me turn on the news, which I did just in time to see the South Tower collapse. I spent the rest of that day in my room entranced before CNN, feeling I was watching some horrible movie and waiting for the end. I watched enthralled long into the night (the operations I was part of had been suspended). The next day I awoke to a very strange world. I did not know anyone around me. My business associate panicked when he heard the airports were closed and took off in his rental car. Everyone I knew and loved was 2000 miles away. I had no one to talk to, no one to help me understand what was happening and how to deal with it, and no one to hold onto. I felt strange and disconnected- like some character in a Twilight Zone episode- as I moved around that ghost town filled with shuffling zombies looking as if they felt the same shock and disbelief that I did. The atmosphere was charged with a strange energy both from the pain and grief and from the storm that bore down upon us. I had to make sense of it. I had to find a place in my mind to put all of this. So I wrote this piece. Thoughts from Sanibel Island I am on a tropical island. As I look across the Gulf, I see the clouds like huge piles of coal rising up into the sky. Ever since I arrived here, I have seen signs, billboards, placards, commercials, and PSA's telling me what to do if a hurricane hits. Is that a hurricane coming? How would I know? That sky looks worse than any thunderstorm I have seen marching across Kansas. The air is hot and heavy. The atmosphere lies across the land like a wet blanket. Three days ago * I * was on a 767. Down here, they call this the "Mean Season" not only because it is the time of hurricanes, but also because the oppressive atmosphere makes people go crazy. Assault, domestic violence, and homicide rates skyrocket. How very appropriate that is this year. It seems that every time I travel to Florida, we end up being in close proximity to President Bush. It is unsettling to know he was here the day I arrived. How will I know if this is a hurricane? How will I know what to do? As I move around the islands they are like ghost towns with just a few souls drifting about. There are signs that tell me that there are normally a lot more people here. Those I do see are old. Of course, it is the middle of the day. The kids are on school and the people my age are all at work. That's it! Or maybe they all know that a storm is coming and they have followed those blue signs that are posted every ten feet. Thus, only me in my ignorance and those who are tired of living remain. Will someone tell me if there is going to be a storm? Should I be afraid? The airport is closed. I may have no choice but to drive or I may be trapped here by the storm. At least the kids are okay. I thought it would be good to get out. When my wife awakened me with the news of the horror (and some great news that seems to have gotten lost in the wind) I clicked on the TV. I sat mesmerized, in shock, and I watched long into the night. The paradise outside could wait. It was storming and I needed to stay safe. Webbie called to tell me that both sides of the road that runs by the American Embassy in Oslo- the very place that was the center of our future's universe, the place where I stood a month ago and said "Something bad is going to happen"- is piled high with flowers, gifts, and expressions of sorrow. Another connection. Yet, I feel so disconnected. I am far away from everyone and everything I know. There are no cornfields here, only the endless expanse of the ocean. There are no elms or oaks but only palm trees that look like they too are waiting for a storm to break and are ready to fight for their lives. Zombies drift about in this pale mirror of the Deep South. How can it rain SO hard with absolutely no warning? One second bright tropical sun and the next a deluge so hard you cannot see the end of your hood. Do hurricanes come like that? One second you are safe and sound, the next the world is ending? Oh my Gods, the Feds are all over down here. They have arrested a bunch of people nearby whom they say trained the murderers who flew the bombs. This is too scary. When it is time to go home, I am driving. I need to in more ways than one. I cannot take the risk that I will get on a plane flown by the one that got away. In a month, my life becomes perfect and I will not risk it now. Plus, I need to reconnect. I need to drive across this country and get a feeling for what is going on at ground level. I need to do this so that I can understand, if I can ever understand. I have to know if the storm is coming. What is it with the President and I and Florida? Why do I feel like I am a part of this, a pawn who is being placed where it has to watch the storm coming yet can do nothing about it? I don't want to be involved. I cannot outrun the storm. My husband was just getting up and I no sooner got the words out of my mouth that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane when the second one hit and it all at once dawned on us that this was not a mistake and and that it was a declaration of war. I wasn't sure of what I wanted to do with my career but on the 11th I knew that my purpose was clear. I have now served in two tours of Operation Enduring Freedom and I'm currently in my first tour of Iraqi Freedom. Anytime I begin to doubt my purpose or loose sight of why I am deployed, I watch clips of that horrible day. No matter how many times I watch it it always brings a tear to my eye. One of my friends had come in and sadi did you hear that a plane hit the World Trade Canter towers. I thought that he was joking or telling me about a movie. When I found out what really happened I was devistated. And I didnt realize until my lunch break that my brother was in New York. So I called my mom and asked if he was okay. Little did I know that he was working across the street from the world trade center on that day. When the towers were collapsing he had to run for his life. And he got out of the island unharmed he was just covered in dust and ash from the towers. I am a true New Yorker, I lived in New York. I was born and raised there for 9 years. I left because my dad is in the military so I left in 1994 and I remember seening the towers when we left. Then I just recently moved to Virginia and I flew to New york to stay with my brother. I was fortunate enough to work at a store owned by a friend of mine and I was allowed to watch television while on the job. I remember watching television and a special report was broadcasted. It told of a plane crashing into one of the buildings of the World Trade Center. Reports were sketchy at that time and I was led to believe it was a small plane and I instantly thought it must of been an accident. Visions of a pilot having a heart attack while flying the plane flooded into my head. But then the second plane struck the other tower. All I could think of was my daughter at home and how I wanted so badly to be with her. Then the reports started telling of hits on the pentagon and another plane down in a field. I just screamed,"What the hell is going on?" I called my house to speak to my daughter. I literally thought we were under attack and that it was the end of the world! I literally started crying at work in front of all of my customers, but they were very understanding. When the towers fell, I think I cried the hardest then. When I got out of work I went home, hugged my daughter, and did what most Americans did; I watched the television for hours and days on end. I turned on CNN to see one of the World Trade Center towers on fire. It was terrible to see but not frightening- at that point the news commentators were still speculating on the cause. Most still thought it an accident. As I watched I could see another plane, live, heading for the tower. At first I thought it was a replay of the first tower. Then I knew it wasn't. It was clear then that no one knew what was going on but that it was all intentional. I could not leave the TV. I quickly feed my two year old, thankul that he could play by himself some. I started making phone calls. I called a close friend here in Princeton to ask if she was watching the news. She was. She was upset and couldn't talk. Her father, in New York on business, was in one of the towers. I got off the phone stunned. There were several friends of mine whose husbands worked in town- even in the towers. I started making calls. I cried with most of them. We started a network, calling everyone to make sure they were ok or had someone with them while they waited news. Then the Pentagon was hit. My father in law works there. I had to call my husband and tell him. Very difficult. I called my mother in law- she had no word but would try to get in touch with him. She was calm and I was glad of that. I couldn't eat and I was starting to feel sick. I could feel my heart pounding. I was very very afraid. When the plane went down in Pennsylvania, I felt very vunerable-in the middle, literally, of it all. I wanted to pack the car and leave. Go somewhere. They had no idea how many planes where out there and they scrambled to get them accounted for and landed. I called my friend again, and offered to watch her young daughter while she awaited news on her father. It was comforting, a bit, to watch the young ones play and sing oblivious. Soon after I heard from my mother in law that my father in law was ok. I was very happy to make that call to my husband. The TV never went off that day, or for several days, it seemed. It was instantaniously different- a different world, and new feelings. I was afraid for my son, for my unborn child. I was afraid he wouldn't be born. The circumstances of his impending birth felt threatened and unclear. I was sure that nothing would be a certainity again. I could not even be sure the next day would come. It is now amazing to me, on the last day of February 2002, how normal life seems again. So soon. And yet, there it is- in every day life; on shows, in the news, in the way we go about our day with new security and restrictions. All my friends' husbands were accounted for and safe. And I'm sure I've gotten a lot of calls too, but the phones (land and cellular) are down (payphones are working, so if you have other loved ones here, they may be able to contact you from a payphone, though the lines are very, very long.) So, I thought I would take the step of e-mailing just about everyone I know (thank G-d for the internet). If I missed anyone, please forward this out. I am OK. For those of you who worried about me, I do appreciate it. I live a good mile, mile and a half from where the World Trade Center used to be - so, I was never in any danger. Most of you will not be surprised to hear that I was asleep when the attacks occurred. I was awoken by my roommate, Charles, at around 10:15AM, Eastern Time, shortly after the second tower collapsed. After watching a little on TV, and heading up to a friend's room to look out his window, I grabbed my camera and walked south, towards the site. The streets were almost entirely empty of automobile traffic. 90% of vehicles were police/fire/rescue or public utlities (electric/phone). All civilian vehicles were heading in the opposite direction. There was a huge plume of dark gray smoke coming from where the WTC used to be. Fortunately, the wind is blowing strongly to the southeast, sending the smoke out into the ocean, and not north over Manhattan, or East into Jersey. A number of people were heading downtown, like I was - many with cameras or camcorders. I reached road blocks around Worth St, about 12 blocks north of the WTC. Police were there. I also saw FBI, ATF, federal customs police, US Marshalls, NYFD, and many other city and federal agencies. I turned west and tried to head to the Hudson river to try and head south from there, but was again stopped by road blocks. The West Side Drive is shut down, for emergency traffic only. So I turned East. I made it to Foley Square, where I worked this past summer - about a 10 minute walk from the WTC. Incidentally, if this had happened two months ago, I quite possibly would have been exiting my train in the basement of the WTC at the time of the attack. A sobering thought. Foley Square is where the state and federal court houses are, in addition to a number of state and federal government office buildings. All were closed, heavily patrolled by armed officers - men with shotguns and machine guns - not a usual sight anywhere in the US. I had my walkman with me and was listening to the radio. Reports were coming in from all over - some confirmed, some speculation. But the scene on the streets was somewhat surreal. It was generally calm. People were moving orderly, very few tried to pass the road blocks. It was eerily quiet except for the sounds of sirens. Throughout my walk, a number of people saw I had a radio and asked me for the latest news. There were also large crowds of people gathered around stopped cars and trucks listening to their radios. Many people all over had surgical masks on, or were covering their mouthes and noses with t-shirts, rags, or paper towels. From there, I went even further East, to the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, and then turned south. This area was almost entirely deserted as it was in the past of the blown smoke and ash. I walked down Water St, and turned West on Wall St. This area seemed to be the most heavily hit. There was a good inch and a half of ash coving the street. Parked cars were covered with the ash. Small bits of debris were floating down from the sky - paper and such. I picked up a piece of what looks like a financial spreadsheet printout - the edges of the paper charred - along with a charred metal vertical blind, which presumably floated down from the WTC. I made it all the way to the New York Stock Exchange - perhaps 4 blocks from the WTC. There I encountered more barricades. I also had to turn back because the ask and smoke was getting too thick. The sun was blotted out from the smoke, which was turning more white, from the dark black it was when I left my building earlier this morning. I saw a number of Air Force fighter planes circling the city, but aside from them and a few news helicopters, the sky was empty of air traffic. I made it almost all the way south to Battery Park before I reached another road block. Then I turned for home. I'm going to try and donate blood, by the rumors are that the lines to do so are many hours long. Maybe tomorrow. Again the scene was just very surreal. I could not get close to the WTC. So it was hard to visualize the unimaginable carnage and devastation and loss of human life that occurred there. People overall were very calm and orderly. Police and fire were likewise calm and orderly. I saw long lines of ambulances and fire trucks, waiting to approach the WTC to search for any survivors. I think it will become even more surreal in the coming days. I can't even imagine looking south towards downtown and not seeing the two massive buildings which defined the skyline. I hope that those responsible will be brought to justice - or perhaps simply wiped off the face of this planet. I think when we all wake up tomorrow, we awake to find a very different world that the one we woke up to this morning. For those of you with friends or loved ones in NY or DC or on an airliner, my thoughts and prayers go out to them. I think in the time that it took me to write this e-mail, my phone is working again (but not my cell) - so maybe you can now contact them on the phone. It was weird because usually my mom doesn't have the news on down stairs when she is making breakfast. Then I looked at the tv, the twin towers were on fire, and a plane was crashed in it! I work from home one day a week and I was taking care of my 4 month old daughter along with my mother. A call came from my sister in Jersey City, New Jersey telling us to turn on the TV. We did and simply could not believe what we were seeing. As the events unfolded I vividly remember holding my daughter in my arms as she girgled and smiled. She had no idea what was happening. This was the first time I thought about whether I had made a mistake in bringing her into a world where tragedies like this happen. I thought about this and really struggle with it for weeks. I did ultimately came to a conclusion that makes sense to me. I brought my daughter into this world to make it a better place and the events of September 11th make me believe even more in that goal. She is part of the future and I will do everything I can to teach her to fight hatred in all its forms, respect diversity and human life, and contribute to the world in a positive manner. I looked at the clock and I was wondering why he kept calling so early, so I finally took the call. He told me to get up and turn on the TV. I said, "Which channel?" He said, "Doesn't matter, it's Armageddon." I stood in my living room frozen, I was so angry and scared at the same time. I was losing it, truly losing it, I couldn't comprehend what I was watching. I felt so naive to have thought that something like this was impossible, and I didn't know what to do next. Then CNBC showed an image, and I'll never forget it for as long as I live. It was a statue of Thomas Jefferson, and there was ash and debris falling all around it, and I thought to myself, "Thomas Jefferson and all of the people who founded this country risked their lives to establish what we have here today. If he were here right now, what would he do? What would he think? And that's when I made a choice. You can either be afraid of everything for the rest of your life or you can fear nothing. I chose to fear nothing. This country and all it's freedoms are worth fighting for, and to quote the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. : "If a man has nothing to die for, then he isn't fit to live." I will live my life without fear, without any regrets and without hesitation. I was truly inspired by how the city of New York came together at it's most needed hour. I was thinking in my mind, if there are any people in the world who can overcome this, it's got to be New Yorkers. I was right. I don't know what the future holds for all of us, all around the world, but I have faith that peace will overcome the evils of this world. As I entered the room I noticed A lot of students galthered around the T.V. moniter that was mounted high in the corner of the room. As I moved closer to try to see what was on the t.v. screen, I heard a student say " oh my god". And then I saw it, one of the twin towers was on fire. At first I didn't recognise where this building was, or what building was on fire. There, among at least fifty students, stood a silence I will never forget. I rushed to class, and soon after someone came in and told us that a second plane had crashed in to the other tower. At that instant I knew it was an attack on the United States. I was at work and I had no immediate knowledge that anything besides the ordinary was going on. Then a co-worker came by my machine and told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. He didn't know what was going on, he had heard it from another employee.I remember thinking, how could anybody possibly hit something like that without meaning to, and yet it really didn't dawn on me that it was anything but an accident. Then when I found out about the second plane hitting, I thought, Oh my God. There was no doubt in my mind then as to what was happening. It was a very scary day. I know that day I thanked God that I didn't live in a big city, and I prayed constantly for those who did. I couldn't wait to leave work that day and find out what was going on for myself.
