Tell us your story: My mother (Mrs. Marquetta Hromoko),had just been placed in the Hospice Program due to colon cancer being found for the second time. Eight months prior she had surgery and the doctors said they got it all, and there was no need for chemo; some months after that she began to feel tired all the time, having difficulties with going to the bathroom. She was hospitalized in the early part of June, 2001. She lay for 2 weeks while they tried to find what was wrong. Her blood count was so low, she required 4 or 5 units of blood during her stay. On a CT Scan they saw a shadow in an area much higher than her cancer was the first time. They said not to worry it was too high to be the cancer they removed. They did exploratory surgery and found a tumor this time on a mesantaric artery; they removed what they could and told us that she would have to have aggressive chemo therapy and possibly radation therapy. I stayed with my mom every day at the hospital and usually didn't leave till 11 or 12 midnight when she fell asleep because she was scared. She told me she had a dream every night exactly the same, that she was in a place where it was very dark and she was holding a lit candle and that she was very scared and that a voice ( she assumed was the Lords) told her not to be frightened and to walk down the path, and as she continued she began to see light in the distance and the closer she got she saw what looked like thousands of people (men and women) standing together holding lit candles and the closer she got the brighter the light, but then she would wake up only to have the same dream every night. Only now, do I think I understand the meaning of that dream. I believe those thousands of people would be the souls of those lost on 9-11-01. Now mind you this was is June. My mom went home from the hospital the end of June. This time, my mom didn't bounce back as she usually did. We struggled to get her strong enough to begin the chemo. My moms livingroom is very large so we had a hospital bed for her to stay in. August began the first round of chemo. It made her deathly sick with severe diahrea, mouth soars, bladder infection, vaginal infections,no appetite. Finally she said, when I go back to the doctor I'll ask if I can take a pill. I didn't ride along with my brother and dad that day, I was exhausted from the day to day care she needed, but I was glad I didn't. The doctor told her the tumor was growing rapidly, she was continuing to lose weight and had no strength. He was making arrangements with Hospice, to help with what we now had to face. My mom had just turned 71 and I thought she would outlive me (53). The day they rolled in the oxygen unit, wheelchair, airbed, and box after box of medicine and syringes, is the day I think my mom gave up the fight. The morning of 9-11-01, I came to make mom's breakfast and routinely she watched and listened to a religous channel. My husband called and said turn the TV on CNN. I did that and the first thing I saw was the first tower on fire and as my mom and I watched we saw the second airplane hit the second tower. We looked at each other at the same time for what seemed to be an eternity, neither saying a word; we didn't need to, I think we both thought this was the beginning of the Armageden as it states in the Bible. This was the end of the world as we new it. We have family in Newark, N.J. and Sterling, N.J. We called to make sure family member were OK and they were, thank God, but they knew people who were among the missing and eventhough my mom new she didn't have long to be here, she prayed everyday for those who were lost. My mom taught Sunday School at the Assemply of God Church where she belonged and she served the Lord for too many years to mention. My brother who was a God sent at this time, worked for the Justice Department, and spent many hours at work because of what happened in America and many of these hours he would have liked to have spent with his dying mother. But my mom told him she understood, and that he was doing important work for the Lord too. She prayed for his safety daily too. My mom passed away November 12, 2001, and unless your not a religious person, you won't understand what I'm about to say. At 10:00 p.m. the night before she died there was a knock on dad's door which was unusual for that time of night. My mom's best girlfriend and her daughter said they had a vision that one of me or my dad was holding my mother back from passing on. I screamed and I cried because I couldn't bring myself to tell her it was OK to leave us. As long as I could feel her and touch her and hold her was all I wanted. Mom's friends said you need to tell her its OK and that we'll be OK and see her one day soon. So, I pulled myself together and talked to my mom alone; I told her how much I loved her, and that Dad would be OK, and to plase let the Angels carry you home, and that we will be with you soon. I slept on the couch that night in the room with my mom and in the morning she was burning up with fever. I had to take my husband to the hospital for bloodwork for post-surgery blood thinners he was on; but I called my younger brother to sit with Dad when I left. I was back in about an hour and a hospice nurse was there, she told me your mom only has a few hours left. I called my mom's sister, who is a minister and my mom's best friend; when we noticed mom's breaths becoming labored we gathered in a circle round my mom's bed and held hands and my aunt led us in prayer as my mom left this earth. It wasn't until I saw the Winter Olympic opening ceremony that I remembered my Mom's dreams back in June, 2001, for it began with a child skating with a lit candle and ended with many, many many children carrying those candles and I believe my mother saw her passing and the passing of the thousands who lost their lives on 9-11-01. Even though its been a year the pain has not gotten any better and I struggle each day with out her but I know she promised me that when my turn comes, she'll be there with her outstretched hand waiting for me. I usually get my local weather at the half hour spots for local news. I quickly sat up in bed that morning, hearing the distress in the commentators voices. I had sat up just a few minutes before the second tower was hit. There was simply a moment where I felt everything in my body and my mind stopped. What was on the screen was devastating. All I could do was sit on the bed and rub my dog's back. It took awhile to move from the bed and begin my day. That morning we didn't take our usual dog walk for I wanted to get back to see what was happening. "Come on Charlie, find your spot " (in the back yard) was about all I felt capable of. Needless to say, like many others, I flipped from channel to channel listening and relistening to everything going on. The entire day was spent with the TV on and lots of tears flowing. I rolled over to turn on the news, wait for the bathroom as one of my housemates had just beaten me to the shower. As I was collecting my thoughts and waiting for the weather report, the local station cut to CBS. There, in a sub-real picture I saw the effects of the 1st airplane slamming into the WTC. I went to wake up my other housemate - he had to see this. At first I thought to myself, "Did the pilot have a heart-attack?" Having flown into NY before I realized that lower Manhatten was quite a bit off the landing path for JFK and LaGuardia as well as take-off patterns. Something is terribly wrong - it's perfect weather there. As various news reporters were transmitting their take, the feed went to a wide shot of the WTC - it was at that time, I watched in horror the second plane slamming into the building. No doubt about it, this was a planned and executed scheme. It was at this point, I could relate to my parents in what they went through when Pearl Harbor was bombed - but this, this was on American soil - happening in the best city on earth. My next thoughts went to my family members who worked in lower Manhatten. One in particular had/has the habit of leaving quite early and getting to his office promptly at 7 AM. After getting to work (what was I thinking!) and dialing my family's phone number for two hours, I finally got through...I got choked up as it was all too quiet on the other end of the line..."It's Stac" I whispered, "please tell me that everyone is accounted for." My cousin let out a sigh of relief - yes, her husband has woken up late and was stuck in the Licoln tunnel for about an hour. My other family member had called at this time on the other line to let me know he was OK as well, having witnessed both planes hitting the WTC as he and his boss drove to their office in LM. Now my phone at work was ringing off the hook...friends, family, colleagues all trying to connect and be assured of everyone's safety. However, one person in our family was not accounted for...my aunt did not know where he was as he had an itinerary of NY (LM), Washington DC and LA. Finally, after 48 hours, we found out that he had switched his filming schedule and went to LA first. The next few days were numb for me. Grateful that my family was safe, but at the same time waiting to hear about friends, clients and acquaintances. I can't say that I was fearful at any point. Crossing the bridges that span the San Francisco Bay held no anxiety for me. But what I did however was cry like I've never cried before. Going to the store, standing in line to pay for groceries, looking at the stranger behind me in line and bursting out crying, holding on to eachother. This still happens to a certain extent. The other thing I noticed about my "reaction" was a more balanced outlook...yes, the people who did this were possessed by evil, yes, it made me sad to see other people in other parts of the world joyful over the recent events. But all in all, a greater dilligence on what is right and what is wrong has impacted my thinking. No longer do I take things for granted on any level. I am grateful that we as a nation have weathered this event so far - I say so far because now my main concern is that we as a country still must uphold those ideals of life, liberty, freedom and happiness to their most pristine state...meaning that we must look from every angle our actions in whatever circumstance. This is what 9/11 has brought out in me, a desire to uphold those ideals that allow people to fulfill their dreams here regardless of any differences. There's more I could write but for now I think this is enough. We are a nation of heros, of cowards, of greed and charity. We are a mixture of the best and worst in the world - it is my hope that we can foster the best, share it with the rest of the world and thus bring us all together in respectful harmony. We were chatting about the usual mundane and happy things that preoccupy our days. Suddenly mother exclaimed...a plane just flew into one of the World Trade Center towers. There was a heavy silence from the phone and then she said the Pentagon has been hit. I just remember forgetting my job and completely reverting my work space computer to a news center. I remember thanking God that my father had cancelled his trip to New York that weekend before. Later that morning, I was asked to attend an awards ceremony for one of my colleagues. She had friends that worked in the Pentagon. She had decided to go ahead and accept the reward because she wanted to remember that there is good amidst this horror. Throughout the ceremony, the University President refrained from his usual wonderful story telling and began focusing on the spirit of life that this ceremony represents. The rest of the day the University was awash with TV sets in classrooms, students crying, people running wildly around holding onto each other and trying to comfort one another. There were angry discussions and incoherence. Since that day, I have had my share of nightmares but mostly there is grief...grief for those who had to jump, those whose lives were ended in incomprehensible terror. Grief that our nation didn't take the foreshadowings seriously. Grief that there is such a horrifying inhumanity. The rage I feel is equally powerful. There is not a day that doesn't go by that I can't fully comprehend the terror, the horror or the pure evil that drove these acts. Within seconds, my friend Lisa called from her cell phone. She was so upset that I could hardly understand her. She told me her husband Jim was at the WTC working that day on 72nd floor! My heart sank, but I knew I needed to be strong for her. I raced up the street ot her house, and we both were shocked at the horror of which we saw on TV. We tried to call, but all the circuts were busy ,cells, mine & hers. I put coffee on and then the second plane hit. I was hugging her, and we were both crying at the sights we saw, she crumpled onto the floor..still not knowing where her husband was. Finally after three hours of sheer terror Jim called to say he got out O.K. It was truely a miracle!! He should not have made it, according to all he went through while climbing down 70 plus stairs. His story is one of the many lucky ones I'm sure. That day has bonded Lisa & I even more.. It was something neither of us would ever want to happen again, nor would we change one thing. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember exactly where I was when I heard that the first plane hit the World Trade Center. I remember thinking how strange it was for a plane to be flying that low and in the area of the World Trade Center. I was on my way to work from Bryant School in Dubuque, where I just finished my weekly mentoring session with Willie, my mentor child for the last six years. By the time I reached work, the second plane had hit the second tower, and they radio was telling everyone that it was highly possible this was a terrorist act. My first response was total disbelief. How could anyone intentionally fly a plane into a building? How could anyone in their right mind attack the United States like this and think they could get away with it? Total shock was my first response. No one at work could function - we turned on the radio and listened intently. We just couldn't believe what was happening. The phones, which are normally very busy, were quiet. The entire building was quite. TV's were moved into the conference rooms so everyone could see what was happening. I think everyone felt the same way. I went home for lunch and after work and watched what was happening on television. I watched, cried, and talked to my family and friends. I didn't get a lot of sleep that night. In the days that followed, the names of people who died were released and of course there were family members here and in surrounding towns. After several days, I finally quit watching what was happening on television. I just couldn't take any more. In the days since, there are very few days that go by that I don't see or hear something that reminds of me of what happened. But the thing that sticks out the most for me is when President Bush reminded us that the attack was not just on America; there were people from 80 nations represented in the World Trade Center buildings. The attacks were really against humanity. There are those who think the American public will forget what happened. I don't believe anyone could every forget what happened. I've been watching the television programs that are meant to serve as a memorial to those we've lost and observed a moment of silence this morning. I think we should make sure that we honor those who died on this date every year, much the same way we observe December 7th as Pearl Harbor Day. I now know how my parents felt. I remember just finishing math and science, and all of a sudden my teacher was called down to the office, i was confused. When she got back she seemed kinda upset and stressed about something, but she wouldnt tell us anything. The day ended and then i found my mom at the bus corner. I asked her if anything was wrong because she seemed upset and school was pretty weird. She told me that we had a terrorist attack and that the pentagon and the world trade center was hit by a plane hijacked by terroritst. I couldnt believe it and watched it on the news, and was in shock, i called my father to see if he was ok because he dosnt work in the pentagon, but worked in DC at the time, he was fine. I couldn't call family and friends because the phones were overloaded. I also have family in New York that I worried about( they were all fine.). My oldest daughter was in school and I wondered whether to pick her up early. My husband is a railroad engineer who works in Philadelphia. We didn't know if Philly was going to be a target, but he went to work that night. He knew in his small way he could help people get back home to their families ( his train meets the one coming from NY in New Jersey). I was also pregnant at the time and had a baby girl six weeks later. I can't help but think at times what a different world she was born into. My kindergarten daughter talked about heroes in school today(9/11/02). Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The following I wrote around 1 am, Sept. 12 to friends and family in an e-mail. It has a certain "freshness" to it, almost like the smell of blood and fire is still with it, so little editing was done. Still Bleeding Everyone-- Today I did not have classes. I don't have classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so I decided to sleep in. Around 10:30 I awoke, hearing lots of swearing in my dorm. The guys in my dorm aren't very intelligent, but I felt a certain energy inside that I couldn't understand. So I turned on the TV. Before my face was images I, like you, shall never forget. Quickly I ran to the bathroom to shave and shower myself. I knew I had to be in the newsroom as these tragic events unfolded. After cutting my chin quite badly, I threw on some clothes, put some gel in my hair and ran to the newsroom. The Daily Kent Stater staff was already at work as I entered. The newsroom was crowded with editors, reporters and photographers making phone calls, looking on the Internet, beginning to compile a long day's worth of news. We had calls from all over. A recently graduated newspaper student who works in Washington DC emailed us a very lengthy letter, which was converted into a poignant opinion piece. Our friends and family from the devastated areas poured in information throughout the afternoon. This was a large news event. Though technically I am not a reporter, nor should I report because of my status as an editorial writer, I was assigned to do a local angle to the Associated Press general news article on the attacks. It was my duty to get reactions from local experts (i.e. Kent State professors). Throughout the early afternoon I spoke with professors from the political science, history, business and NATO studies departments. From them I got a wealth of quotations. Unfortunately only a few of the quotations made it into my article, due to space limitations. After speaking to them, I wanted to speak with an expert in domestic or international terrorism. A fellow staff person referred me to a former KSU professor for comment. I had the gentleman's home phone number, so I gave him a call. He refused comment. Though his former coworkers gave me comment, he refused to speculate, then hung up on me. He was not a very happy man. Regardless, I was able to put together my article, which can be found at www.stater.kent.edu. You'll have to do some searching, as this website is constantly updated. But while speaking with political science professors, they told me there would be a university wide meeting at 4 p.m. at the KIVA. (The KIVA is a smaller auditorium in our student center.) At the meeting basic security issues were addressed, with the university president and other officials condemning the actions of the terrorists, but assuring us that we were/are safe. A moment of silence was held at the beginning of the conference. During the meeting a girl, just to the upper right hand side of me, was sobbing. Her head was buried in the side of her friend. Glenn, a Stater photographer, took a picture of her. After the meeting Glenn went to her to get her name for the photo caption. She refused to give it to him. A guy with the crying girl threatened Glenn. As I headed out of the meeting, Glenn grabbed me and explained the situation, and asked if I could try to get her name. Being the daring journalist that I am I went to her, waited for her friends to leave and spoke to her. The girl's name is Allysa. She has family stuck in and around the building struck in New York. Thankfully she had been able to communicate with them through the Internet and found out that they were okay. Allysa was still shaken by the events. With a bit of empathy, I was able to obtain the information from her. Now she is a possible day after story for Thursday's newspaper. The photo that Glenn took will run tomorrow. This has been one of the most trying days as a reporter I have ever had. I have a feeling in terms of magnitude this will be one of the biggest tragedies I will ever cover as a journalist. As I write this letter, it's nearly 1am. I can't sleep. My mind is still spinning with thoughts. The goals of terrorism are actually quite simple: all a terrorist wants to do is disrupt the lives of average people through senseless acts of violence. They want you to be afraid. Whoever the terrorists are, they have been successful. The unending coverage of the events on CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, and every network is illustrative of their effectiveness. Take a walk across campus or town and glum faces are everywhere. Everyone has been affected. For the moment, the terrorists have seemingly won their battle. However, I believe that we all need to get on with our normal lives. With proceeding forward, we will win the battle. All Americans need to get up, go to work, eat at McDonalds, and basically proceed forward like business as usual. This will be beneficial in so many ways. The dead should be mourned. The United States will strike back with a vengeance never seen before. But we as common people must move forward. We need to heal, and part of healing is moving forward. Reflect tomorrow, but remember that tomorrow is a whole new day. A whole new day of hope. Live life like you never have before. God has blessed all of you with life. Use it well. Love one another. Help eradicate what has brought this tragedy: hate. What amazes me is the American reaction, both good and bad. People are pouring into blood banks to help. Religious leaders are meeting with people trying to give them some kind of answer. Millions of people have poured their support whither it be through a newspaper column (had to pat myself on the back), record blood donations, or through a simple hug to a family member. We are bound tightly together. Our humanity prevails. However I am concerned with the recent price gouging at the gas stations. I am concerned about families running to Tops to stock up on supplies. Neither acts are necessary. Gas prices are rising because so many people are running to the pumps based on rumor. Some believe the Middle Eastern countries will cut back their oil supplies. OPEC has continually promised to keep gas shipments the same. This makes economic sense. Why would they cut supply and hurt their own business? Give this a week, if even, and gas prices will return to normal. The gouging is very, very illegal and won't last. Don't run to Tops to get supplies. This only causes more panic. We'll be fine. Panic is a bad thing. And very importantly, especially to those at places where international persons are living or visiting: DO NOT BLAME THEM. DO NOT FEAR THEM. They are just as scared as we are. They do not need to be scared of us. I cannot emphasize this point enough. American history has many ugly stories where zealous Americans have attacked its foreign population in retribution of international leaders' politics. Remember the Japanese internment camps during World War II. Remember the recent attacks on Arabians storeowners. Many more examples mar the pages of US history. If you hear anyone saying foolish things about foreigners in this country, correct them. This kind of xenophobic sentiment should not be tolerated. Hate does not over come hate. Well, this helped get all of my thoughts on paper (an electronic sort.) I hope you all have a good tomorrow (or today as you read it.) It was 5:30..by the time i got to work because i started at 6:00..the report stated that an object or airplane at hit the world trade center. Now at this time they did not know what kind of plane it was or if this was just an accident. When I got to work and started turning my computers on to start my day that is when someone came up and said the world trade center was hit. There were some people in the company at this time and they had the a tv on..and we started watching it and this was when the the first plane hit. Then that is when we were watching that the second plane came in and hit. I went back to my desk.. went on the internet but the lines were busy and tied up..i went back to the tv and saw the first tower come down that was devasting to me because here we were and said what!!! no way this could be happening. The company at around 9:30-10:30..closed down because at that time there were other planes around and did not know targets...I went home and watch in horror on tv...but this was also the day i ordered my internet service and was talking to the representative down in la area. This is when i heard they were trying to land all the planes..and there were still some planes in the air that they did not know if more hijackers were on board. We come to understand as americans that we value life. As the days went on..my brother at this time was suppose to have a meeting in the world trade center on sept 12th the next day. I think what was going on his mind was if the company rescheduled or if the hijackers waited he could be a victim and even though we feel the loss of the people and our hearts go out to the families it gives us a perspective on life. Now, I have an 'attack' story to pass onto my children and onto their children. I was a sophomore in high school, and when my alarm clock rang on the morning of September 11th, 2001 - I rolled out of bed and turned by TV on like I always do. I then continued to grab my towel and head to the shower, but the horrific images on the screen caught my eye. At first I just though - "Oh, a small plane hit a downtown tower somewhere." Then the shock came as I focused in. I dropped my towel and ran into the living room, where my mom welcomed me with open arms. She held me as we sat on the couch in horror and watched the towers collapse. Needless to say, I didn't go to school that day. Two days later, I woke up dreading the day. My father was shipping out to "Location M" smack dab in the heart of Afghanistan. He is active duty Air Force, and is a proud defender of his country. I held onto my "Daddy" forever, and exchanged "I love you's" until he walked out the door. A million questions ran through my head - was he scared? would he live through this? would i ever see him again? Months after months passed, and my mom and I lived day by day - keeping my father in our prayers. My Dad didn't come back home to us for roughly 9 months. It was, pardon my language.. hell without him. This tragic event has brought my family much closer, and has taught me not to take things for granted. Tell us your story: the day started as usual until the boss came to say a plane hit the world trade center. of course we thought it was one of his jokes, but as he pulled a few of us to the tv in his office so we could see, the terror still runs through me even now. as the day procceded we couldn't work too well due to wonder if's. we all knelt in prayer for the families and the whereabouts of our fellow americans. the horror and premeditated plan of such an act caught some of us off guard, in the corner crying for the famlies and our own family members that worked north. my daughter, crystal, worked through the pentagon with a civilian company, and when the plane landed there i called and NO answer. i called her then boyfriend, jeremy, and asked where she was, because he was working as a pipefitter at the dc convention center. he said she was a surviver and she'd be fine. such confidence in his love and my daughter who had the miltary influence as she grew up from her father and i, both coast guard. 6 hours later i recieved the call that she was stuck in traffic and when the plane hit the pentagon she was on the other side of the building. other members of the shipyard had the same predicument. but the ones who did loose a loved one the haeling took a long time. we always think that our country is untouchable because of our techniques and abilities but, look we were caught even if some one knew but couldn't pinpoint. it's hard to believe that we help the world so why do they want to destroy, we all have to adapt to any enviorment and culture. as we listened to pieces to slowly solve this horror act we hope that it or any horrorable act can be dissolved. we still need peace. we can resolve any problem. we teach our kids to solve why can't it continue as adults? we all did leave the playground years ago. Tell us your story: I remember sitting at my desk, we happened to have the television on in our breakroom broadcasting Good Morning America when the first plane hit. I rushed in to see the smoke and devistation to the tower. I immediately ran back to my desk to call my husband. Not getting an answer on his office phone, I called his cell phone. When he answered he explained that he was on a conference call on the other line; he had no idea what was going on. I told him what had happened and while we were on the phone, the second plane hit. He went onto the conference call and alerted all on the call what was happening. When the second plane hit, I felt like someone had taken all the breath from my body. I cried, and still do. I think I understand better how my parents felt during Pearl Harbor and the Kennedy assassination. I had hoped I'd never experience anything like the events from my parents and granparents era, but I guess no generation is immune to the fanatics, zealots and mislead throughout the world. Tell us your story: i think im like alot of americans. i had just woken up at 10am and was on my way to the local gas station. i turned on the radio and heard a reporter saying they were evacuating our state capital. the reporter sounded scared. when i got to the gas station i asked the clerk what was going on, and she told me. i went home right after that and turned on the tv. i cried for days. i still cry. today hurts. im way over here in minnesota and its far away, but you see..this is my country. im free to go where i want to go. if i want to go to live in ny i can do that. it was like they tore my heart out. i dont know if that sounds normal or not. i have so many feelings. i dont live my life in fear. i have children to raise. places to go to. but the images hang in my mind..and my tears still come easy. i love my country. i may not agree with everything our government does, but im free to express that. i love that we have freedom. we're still standing though. they didnt topple us. it made us more united. we all get caught up in our own lives..in the day to day. but thats because we have the freedom to have a day to day. i know that if i ever need help, if anything ever happened, i can count on my neighbors. after sept 11, I KNOW i can count on my neighbors for the things that are really important. i dont know if i made sense...but thats what i feel like.
