We had our oldest daughter home from Spain for a couple of weeks so we decided to drive from Orlando to Miami and take a week off for a vacation. We got up early to take advantage of the day. We didn't even stop to eat breakfast we went to the drive through at McDonald's and ate on the road. At some point we turned on the radio and began to hear the news that a plane had crashed into the world trade center. Of course it was early on and it was being reported as an accident and not as an attack. About ten minutes into the news report we could hear in the background that there was another plane that had hit the other tower. At this point we knew it was no accident. We didn't know how to react. We were horrified,scared, not knowing what to expect. I remember driving along the road with water on either side of us and feeling that the world was coming to an end. I remember wondering if I would ever see my sister and mother who live in Europe again. I remember feeling completely and totally helpless. I just wanted to go home. The events continued to unfold. The Pentagon was hit and there was still an airplane in the air that by then we knew was probably headed for the White House. The thing I remember perhaps the most about September 11th was how eerie it felt to see the skies empty. Knowing there was no way into or out of the country. It is a feeling I won't soon forget. I was blessed that the events of September 11th did not take any of the people I loved from me but I think that I speak for many when I say that September 11th took away my sense of security. Something inside us all died on September 11th but out of tragedy hope is born and out of this tragedy a great sense of patriotism and hope for the future was born. I remember going home and hugging my neighbors and talking to them more often. I pray it is not in vain that those more than 3000 people lost their lives, I hope that we continue to feel the bond of humanity long after the first anniversary, long after the 10th anniversary, I hope we never forget. I had been attending school there and planned on returning after visiting my family for the summer. But, finances and a recent engagement kept me in California. On that life-changing morning I was lying in bed with my fiance, Brian, when the phone rang. It was my best friend telling me to turn on the news. What I saw didn't quite register. I thought it was a movie. New York was covered in gray smoke and ash, and the twin towers were crumbling. People were screaming and jumping to their death. Brian and I just sat on the edge of the bed, stunned. I was supposed to start a new job that day. Brian turned to me and said "Marry me, today." He's a Medic in the National Guard and he was worried that he might have to leave to fight a war. He wanted me to be his wife before he left. I said yes, then I called my new job and told them I wouldn't be in, I was getting married. We called our family members and told them, then began to hunt for a place to wed. My mother was instrumental in securing us a place in Long Beach, where I was born. It was a small chapel with lots of flowers and they provided the marriage license. My mother also insisted on buying me a dress and shoes, my Nana bought cake for a small backyard reception and my friend bought flowers. My husband-to-be was put on 24 hour alert and spent the day in uniform packing his gear and buying extra amunition. I was tired, sad, confused and scared. Seeing him prepare for possible war on our wedding day wasn't exactly what I had in mind. That day we bought silver wedding bands from the jewelry store across the street from my bank. Brian ironed my wedding dress for me while I got ready, and we headed for the chapel. We began the ceremony with a prayer for all those lost in the Twin Towers attacks and we ended the ceremony husband and wife. Now, one year later, we are happily married and are weeks away from having our first child. As I watch the news and memorials for the 9-11 attacks I can't help but think of the look in Brian's eyes as he said his vows to me. In spite of death, potential war, and terrorist attacks, there was joy and love and the promise of a brighter future. That is what no one can take away from us. We, as Americans, as human beings, have within us the power to shape our own destiny through our spirit, strength and love. It's hate that destroyed those towers, and love that will rebuild what was lost. Tell us your story: It was my Junior year at fountain valley high school, i was gettin up early, like I always did, and i turned on the news, channel 11, and as i was eating my cereal I saw these two large buildings burning, and then the news was showing how 2 planes had crashed into it, then i saw the building claspe, and I was just sitting there watching it, not really knowing what was going on, I was in shock that it didn't register into my mind, and it was like a flash, but nothing there, i left to school with out saying nothing about it, but when i got to school and went into first period, that was all we did was talk about it, and watched the news all day, school was not school that day, i did nothing but watch the news. During my psychology class during the middle of the day was when it finally hit me, I was so blown inside and i didn't want to be in school. I was thinking about how there was going to be so much hatred in the streets and how this was going to effect our society, I knew people were going to be ridiculed for their beliefs, and i felt bad for all that suffered so much, there were so many families who lost their parents and sisters and brothers, i could think of how they felt, not even comprehend how it would feel. Our nation was attacked, but we worked together and got so much help that we made it through this, and know that it has been a year things or starting to look better, but no matter how long it's been we will never forget this tragedy. On September 8,2201 my father went into the emergency room of Mesa Luthern hospital with severe abdominal pain. We later found out that he had a mass the size of a grapefruit on his pancreas. Obviuosly, this was quite a shock to my family. He was admited immediately. Fortunately, I was able to take a leave from work to be with him while he was in the hospital. Which ended up being four months. The morning of September 11, I was trying to get some sleep after a very rough night with my father. Something that is almost impossible in the hospital, they are forever coming ang going poking and checking something. My mother woke me up right after the first plane hit. I remember rolling over and thinking to myself," Someone is trying to start another world war. " Then the reality of what was happening hit me and jumped out of bed just in time to see the second plane hit. I remember the horrified way I felt when I saw the towers collapse. I have a cousin in New York and my thoughts were with him, as I knew that he was probably watching helplessly as people were jumping off of the building. He still won't talk about it. All I could do that day was push the panic that I was feeling aside, because I had to send my father into a surgery that would either save his life or kill him. I sat down after my father had gone into surgery and prayed. I prayed for hours. To me, September 11th will always be a reminder of how strong the human spirit can be when called upon to be so. I saw men and woman push aside their fear and come together to do their best to save lives. And I saw my family go through one of life's hardest trials without falling apart. So, whenever anyone asks me where I was on September 11th, I will always be ready with an answer. I could not believe what I was seeing, the first thing I thought about was my children and my husband and were they ok, I like many other parents chose to pick my kids up from school early that day. I next thought about all the people that were taken from this world for no good reason at all. I so wanted to go there and see if I could help, but I new that this was impossible for me to do. I was asleep with my 2 year old daughter in her bedroom. I was 7 months pregnant with our second child. My husband quietly woke me up saying I might want to see what was on TV. I was watching when the second plane hit. I hadn't had alot of sleep but spent most of the day watching CNN. My husband wanted very much to stay home from work but he had been sick the week before and didn't want to use more sick days. He works for a financial investment company so we weren't sure if he would get off early due to the stock market situation. I recorded the first few days of news coverage onto VHS. We were fortunate enough to have not lost anyone in any of the three tragedies on 9/11/1. However, my husband had just spoken with someone there the previous day in the course of his work. This year on 9/11/2 my husband, daughters, brother-in-law and I flew to Ohio to visit his Grandparents. The air fare was less expensive so we were grateful to be able to afford the trip. His Grandmother doesn't get out of the house much so is not able to travel here to see us. This was the first time she saw her new Grandaughter and second time for our oldest. Since we were flying on 9/11 we weren't able to see many rememberance specials but I recorded the Larry King Live Weekend edition that interviewed different people who lost a loved one in the attacks. I hope our nation is able to better defend us in the future from further terror attacks and count my blessings for what I have daily. I work in the library, and at that time we didn't have access to a TV or radio. We got a call from another building (HS) that the planes had hit the world trade center in new york. I walked over to the high school to see what was going on and that's when I saw one of the school secretaries run over to the principals office and say that a plane had crashed into the pentagon. I remember walking into the high school library and past classrooms where they had access to TVs ....it was deadly silent and every person in each room was in shock and staring at the TV. I will never forget the looks on their faces. When I went outside to walk back down to my school, i remember looking up and seeing all the airplanes circling to land at KCI airport. There were countless circling contrails in the sky...very, very strange. Back at my school, We tried to find a way to get some info and a couple of staff members hooked up a radio and I tried to get a signal on a TV in the library. We also tried to get on the Internet to check the news websites like CNN, but none of the web sites would work. We only caught bits and pieces and were very frightened at what had happened. The staff members didn't intentionally inform the students, but they knew something was going on and eventually found out and were told. The students were very distracted and some even cried. We tried to continue the school day normally as best we could, but staff and students were very upset and afraid. It was this day that caused our principal to make sure we subscribed to a satellite tv service so we could get information in case of another emergency. When I got home that night I watched CNN continually all night and thereafter as much as I could for several days. I became obsessed with the news and remain so, to a lesser degree, to this day. I watched the news every waking minute of every day for more than a month after September 11th. I cried with everyone, I cried alone, I cried with every story of a lost loved one, a missing father, husband, child, sister, brother. I have cried for the last year. I have not tried to analyze the reason I cry, I'm sure it's depression, and a deep, intense sense of hurt. I hurt that there can be people who hate us so much, that they would do something so unimaginably cruel to so many people. When my friend called to tell me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, we were discussing what could have cause the "accident". We were still talking when the second plane hit, then we knew. We are so much like small children in this country, we don't really understand how much hatred and envy there is toward us. We open our arms to everyone, we try to accept everyone. We have our faults, but as a country, we never set out to harm. How has my life changed? I still live the same life, but now I carry a sense of grief that I feel will never leave me. He said that one of the Twin towers had been hit. We all just laughed and were, like, yeah sure. My teacher decided to find out if it was the truth and he went to CNN.com and found one of the first pictures of the crash. We all kind of went into shock. The bell rang and i went to my second hour class. lots of people in the halls didn't know yet. In English we had a teacher come in and tell us that another plane had hit. They took our class to another room and let us watch, because they thought it was history in the making and it was. So we watched the tower fall and my Friend Jackie next to me began to cry. She said that she had family in New york. (don't worry they were all fine) She was really upset about it. We watched the first tower fall, and I felt a deep emptyness grow inside me. I knew that when the first one fell that the other one was going to fall also, because i knew that today was not America's day. I was in front of The JOHNSON CENTER at George Mason University (Fairfax, Va). I didnt realize what had happeend just yet. As soon as i entered i saw pictures and film footage of the twin towers. It was terrible because many of us had friends and relatives in NY. I had just arrived from NY on Sept. 10th. I flew in from la guaredea international... In fact, as soon as i realize that it was a terrorist attack i called my folks and told them that i would not be going to class, i was even prepared to go back to my home in chesapeake, va. I loved the DC area and furthermore i loved the people of NY. It was a sad day for all of us. I cried and i prayed that day... The PENTAGON was, holy **** the pentagon was hit. I just couldnt believe it. I was just there a week or two before the 9/11. I couldnt believe that someone could destroy the towers too. It was a shame. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: At the Memorial overlooking the crash site of UAL's Flight #93 I thanked the Memorial Ambassador for her volunteer work. Her reply was a simple "It is the least we can do." After spending the day in the community I realized that the spirit of America lives here. They did so much more. On 9/11 I was a volunteer working in the Emergency Room of Loudoun County Hospital near Leesburg, VA. We heard of the tragedies in NYC and the Pentagon and were told that a UAL aircraft was somewhere over Pennsylvania and was headed our way. As we set up for mass disaster my heart went out to the flight attendants on board that aircraft. I traveled to Shanksville with my daughter Christine. She is a Research Assistant working on the 911 project at George Mason U. (www.911digitalarchive.org) and has visited before and knew many of the individuals we met that day. Her purpose was to further outreach to the community and to preserve the history of Flight #93 and the aftermath on-line. My purpose in visiting was to place flowers at the crash site and to give prayer for the passengers and crew. Most importantly, I wanted to pay my respects to the Flight Attendants who perished. As a retired flight attendant with thirty-five years of service and a widow of a retired UAL pilot expected a sad time. The day started with a Parade led through the small town lined with thousands by the new tanker of the Shanksville Fire Department "United Flight 93." On it were the forty names of those lost in the crash. They were followed by sixty-five other rescue vehicles and volunteers from the surrounding area. A multitude of floats and groups patriotically participated in the parade. Two-hundred and seventy-three people dressed in red, white, and blue finished the parade becoming a "Living Flag." On the sports fieldnear the school (one mile from the crash site) there was a wonderful program of tribute with everything one would normally find at a Fourth celebration but also so much more. The music included "We Shall Rise" and "Flying Home." The Keynote Address was given by Wally Miller, Somerset County Coroner, who spoke of the crash and who promised that the site would forever be hallowed ground. I understand from others that he insisted the charred trees be turned into chips and scattered there. Wally said that the families of the victims would know that they were always welcome and the townspeople would be there to support them. It was an honor to shake his hand. We met the Mayor, Ernest Stull who worked so hard on preserving the site and making it accessible and who takes great pride in his community and the work that they have done. We met also with Judy Baeckel whose husband is the Fire Chief and who put up the first memorial in their front yard and sponsored a float in the parade with forty stars representing the forty who were lost. We spoke with the Captain Jo Shade, police officer and second on the scene who worked with recovery efforts. She is a native American who spoke of the spirituality and sanctity of the land at the crash site. My favorite spot was the Memorial Garden at the Shanksville-Stonycreek School. Markers with famous sayings are placed throughout along with a sculpture featuring the handprints of students, rescue workers and others involved in the events of 9/11. The garden with red, white and blue flowers, memorial benches and paths is a very special place. We then went to the Memorial Site where we met with the Memorial Ambassador. Shortly after the crash a churchmember stood in front of her congregation and asked for volunteers with a carefully thoughtout plan. They stayed there throughout the days following 9/11 and the bitterly cold winter to explain and preserve. There is a special flag at the Memorial with two white bars representing the twin towers, a Pentagon, five stars with fifty points of light for our states, three red bars representing the blood that was spilled. In the center is the Keystone of Pennsylvania. The curator at the museum has catalogued over one-thousand items left at the site including a flight attendant dress placed there. For weeks afterwards people would lay flowers on it. The poem "The Dress" may also be found there. At the site are many tributes. My favorite are the forty angels with names of the passengers and crew. We said our prayers and left flowers and I, of course, cried. It took a while for me to realize why Shanksville in Somerset County is the most important crash site of 9/11. The Twin Towers represented the business, economy and prosperity of the US. The Pentagon represented the might and power of America. Shanksville, Somerset County and its people represent the goodness and kindness and determination of the American people. I expected a sad day but the pride of the people and the American spirit proved it to be a day of hope, history and pride. A beautiful memory was left in my mind. The passengers and crew represent sacrifice and bravery. As the words of "Flying Home" say: ".......Forty souls with destinations, every heart loved here below, Lifting off the earth together, how could they ever know? They would come home on wings of angels, From a field where flowers grow..............Flying home, flying home, Heroes, Friends and Family, living on and on, they have left but have not gone, they will rise with every dawn......." Tell us your story: My wife, son and I were on vacation for ten days, travelling throughout Arizona and Southern Utah, visiting the various canyons and National Parks. We had flown into Phoenix on September 1, 2001 and rented a car to travel to the various points of interest. We returned to Phoenix on September 10 and stayed at a motel, preparing to fly home the next day (September 11). Upon getting up that Tuesday morning, we did not turn on the T.V. but went downstairs to have breakfast at the motel. It was then we saw on the T.V. in the lobby the unfolding tragedy, and learned later that the nation's airports were closed down. Since there was no guarantee of flying home anytime soon, I called the rental car agency and asked for permission to drive the car back to BWI Airport in Baltimore, Maryland (over 2,000 miles). When we arrived at the airport, there were hundreds of cars from all over the country because of other people not able to fly. I will never forget where we were or what we were doing on September 11, 2001! Working in the nursing field, I get plenty tired of answering the phone so I let it ring and ring, thinking if it were important enough, someone would leave a message. The morning of the attack I was sitting at my desk, it is just around the corner from the breakroom, where there is a televison. Someone came out of the breakroom and said that an airplane had just hit the WTC. We all jumped up from our desks and went to watch the television reports. At this time we are all thinking that this is a small aircraft, the type used for tourist site seeing. But as we look at the hole in the side of the WTC we are discussing that the damage was too large for a small aircraft. The next thing we see is the second attack occur. We know at that instant that this was no accident. At this point, there is silence quickly followed by mass activity. The annoucement is made shortly after that, all aircraft are being ordered to land at the nearest airport, THE NEAREST, no matter where they are. A couple of hours latter the announcement is made that all of our aircraft are accounted for. The sense of relief was overshadowed by the knowledge that we had lost airline family members. But on that morning as he dropped me off we both kissed each other goodbye. I'm glad he did. I rode the A train to work. When I got off of Broadway Nassua station (about 8:50 am) I saw a lot of paper flying like when there's a parade and I thought how weird, i didn't know there was a parade. and as i looked down Nassau, in the Wall street direction I could see all this paper flying. As I started to walk to work I distinctly remember this one lady that was well dressed cluthting on to her purse, looking up at the sky, with the most terrifying look in her eyes. And I remember thinking I wonder if she's ok, should I ask her. I felt compelled to ask her are you ok, but I didn't. Her her was a mess, her face was a bit dirty. But unfortunately my nature isn't like that so i proceeded to go to work. and then i saw another person, a man who seemed a bit out of breath, again his face was dirty and he also looked a bit scared. As I came to the corner of John street I saw a crowd had gathered and looked up in the WTC location. And there I saw this huge hole with black smoke coming out. Oh my God, I thought what the heck happened. I thought it was an explosion. I asked someone what happened and they said they think it was a jet plane. Somewhat scared I proceeded to walk to work, not knowing if i should or shouldn't. The entire time I kept thinking the same thing. I decided to go to work. When I arrived on 28th floor, the reception people looked at me a bit scared and asked me what happened. I had no idea that the impact had been so loud and that it was felt in our building. Since they didn't have a view of the wtc, they didn't know. So i told them what I was told. I went to my desk which had a view of the other tower. And two coworkers and I went into one of the offices to see from the window if we could see the one that got hit. Then all of a sudden out of nowhere you hear this like roaring sound and this huge blue plane and we screamed oh my God and we saw it hit the second tower right before my eyes. I started crying and all i knew is this was no accident and that we were being attacked. All i knew is I had to get home to my two babies at home. everyone proceeded to evacuate and somehow someway as I was crying i proceeded to cross the brooklyn bridge. Crying and scared I also started looking up at the sky fearing the worst. I walked as fast as I could and God blessed me cause i found my cousin and his girlfriend on the bridge. that familiar voice was a godsend. Amist so many people who would have guessed I would find my cousin in all the chaos. As we walked with the crowd we heard planes, we didn't know it was the military securing our skies. then we heard this thunderous roar. We began to run not looking back. We didn't know it was the tower coming down. I do remember one thing. When we got to brooklyn we found these 2 ladies that had escaped just in time, they came down from the 89th floor of the second tower that was hit. And i remember i said god bless you. My boss, who was late, usually assembles last minute reports and information for our COO, so I assumed her responsibilities. I asked the COO if he needed anything, he said he had all his papers, but gave me his car keys and asked me to go downstairs to his car and get his cellphone which he'd forgotten to bring in with him. It was about 8:55am, I walked past my car in the parking lot, keeping a watchful eye on someone who had parked next to me and was a little too close when he opened his door. I got to Dick's car, retrieved his phone and was proceeding back to the office when I saw Maureen, our CFO, arriving. I waited for her and when she emerged from the car she was pale, shaking and was on the verge of tears, and the first thing she said to me was "have you heard?". She runs the company with her husband Tom, and my first thought was that something had happened to Tom or their two boys. She then explained to me that a plane had hit the WTC. I was speechless, and torn between thinking it was an unfortunate accident or terrorism. We both made our way to then office in a state of shock - by the time we got to the conference room, the television was on and everyone was aware of what had happened. I work at the front desk and when I got back there, the radio had switched to live news and we heard that two planes had hit. I called my husband, who had taken that week off to build a deck, and he immediately put the tv on. The rest of the day, until we were told we could leave at 2:30, passed in a blur - no work got done, I was speaking with my husband every few minutes, and it just seemed like one thing after another - the WTC, the crash in Pennsylvania, the Pentagon - an overwhelming feeling of what next ? Many times, I was tempted just to pick up my things and go home, all I wanted was to be somewhere safe with the man I love, I kept thinking, maybe they're targeting all places of business, I don't want to die here, I want to be with Michael. I have never felt so many emotions simultaneously - fear, sadness, trepidation, anger, confusion, love - it was very hard maintaining my composure at work. When we were told we could leave at 2:30, the tears came in my car - I probably drove a little over the speed limit, but I just wanted to get home - and when I did, the television was on and I saw for the first time the awful images which up until then I'd only heard on the radio. I still find it incomprehensible that human beings, no matter what they believe is right, or what God they believe in, can be so incredibly evil to other people. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was just finishing a night shift as the charge nurse at the major nursing home in this NE Oregon city of 17,000 people. I was on the ground level in an alert and oriented patient's room working and giving medications and we saw the first plane crash into the side of the WTC and watched the horrible black smoke rise from it. Neither of us could talk because we were so shocked and horrified. I prayed silently for the people in the building and the plane, and then I finally said that was terrible and I hoped every one got out ok. Then I went upstairs to continue working and someone said that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon. Someone else said "No, it was the WTC." I said "I hate to say this, but maybe it was both." Unfortunately, I was correct. That's the worst thing I've ever been correct about. It's the one time I wish I had been wrong. As I went to my apartment to sleep, Pendleton was all excited about the beginning of the world famous Pendleton Round-Up, and there was lots of traffic as cowboys, entertainers, and rodeo fans entered town. There was a debate on whether the Round-Up shoule be cancelled that year, but it was decided to hold it, because we were going to let the terrorists know that they had not destroyed our sense of independence and that they had a long way to go to win this war, and that we are not easily intimidated and wiiling to give up our freedoms. At the Round-Up, we had a moment of silence for the victims of this horrible attack, several of whom called Oregon home. I prayed at home with my family for those affected and worried about the welfare of my father who was known to travle to the NY area at times. He was okay, so my prayer was answered positively. I offered my nursing services and gave a donation to the Red Cross, but I was not needed at the time, and I have children, so they wanted me to stay with them. I started school to further my education, and wrote an extensive paper on and became educated in biological and chemical weapon attacks but I hope I never have to use this knowledge. I usually will read the news around 8:00AM, but I was unusually busy that mornining. The server seemed to take forever, as if the Net was congested. Finally, one lone picture and a brief statement appeared indicating that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I assumed that an accident had occurred. I announced this to my coworkers, two of them from New York. One immediately attemtpted to contact family but all circuits were busy. My wife called from home to ask if I had heard. While we were talking, she said, "oh my God, another plane just hit the second tower. I just saw it." I couldn't believe it. Terrorism didn't register with me. I couldn't understand why two planes had crashed into these towers. Finally I realized this was no accident, something I should have recognized immediately. We all sat in stunned silence, as the whole college seemed to come to a hault. We wached TV monitors all day. When the first tower collapsed I kept repeating: "there is noway that just happened." I was wrong, it had. As slow as I was to come around to reality, I realized that our world had changed, and that we can never think the same way about terrorism again.
