<text>I had just finished my last trip for the month the night before and had met my Mothers airplane at the gate. She was coming in from Las Vegas and was scheduled to fly a Boston turn the next morning out of Newark. She rode the employee bus to the parking lot with me and I remember us both commenting on how beautiful the City looked all lit up and how the Twin Towers looked liked "Guardian" figures over the City! I dropped her off at the hotel, gave her a kiss and a hug, told her I loved her and would see her tomorrow afternoon. She turned to me and told me she loved me and "be careful" which is something she always says but it seemed to have a more urgent tone in the way she said it.
I woke up the next morning to a man on the radio screaming that a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. The first thought that came to mind was a small stunt plane hit, so I ran downstairs, turned on the T.V. and stood there NOT believing what I was seeing! I immediately ran back upstairs, woke my roommate, we came back downstairs and just stood there rubbing our eyes to make sure we were really seeing this.
We were watching a local New York news channel and they were interviewing people as to what they had witnessed and I remember them interviewing a guy who had said he saw a Continental 757 hit Tower One. Then one of the reporters said that they were getting reports that the Continental plane was the fatal plane and it was enroute from Boston. I literally lost my breath and was gasping for air! I had JUST LOST MY MOM!
A million thoughts were racing through my head and all of a sudden we saw a huge fireball errupt on the Tower Two; I turned to my roommate and said "Oh my God! They've bombed the Tower!" Then the news station started showing the replays of the plane flying down at a steep angle, banking, and then striking the corner of the building. We just stood there listening to the reports and then my phone rang. I got through to voicemail and it was my Mom calling from Boston telling me she was alright and wanted to know how I was and where I was? I tried calling her back and kept getting a busy signal, couldn't even get through to her voicemail.
Then we started to hear reports that there was a fire at the Pentagon; those reports turned to confirmed reports that a plane had hit the building and my roommate and I both looked at each other and said "Bin Laden!" We couldn't believe the Pentagon had been hit.... THE PENTAGON! Now were were hearing that in fact American Airlines had in fact lost two airplanes and United had lost one airplane and still had another that was not accounted for. Then the news of a crash outside Pittsburgh, PA and I turned to my roommate and told him I hope I'm dreaming and this all a huge nightmare!
All of a sudden we see the South Tower start to fall on its side and the huge cloud of smoke falls over lower Manhatten; I started crying and my roommate turns and says that when the smoke clears the Tower will still be there. I told him that there wasn't going to be a Tower left standing. I decided to get in my car and drive to see what I could of the City. At the time we were living by the Outerbridge Crossing which led to Staten Island and when I would drive to the airport for a trip I would judge the day by the visibility of the Towers; if I could see them it was a good day to fly, if not, then I was going to be spending alot of time in the ballpark. As I drove up the on ramp I looked back over my shoulder towards the City and saw the one remaining Tower still standing with all the smoke surrounding it. It made me sick to my stomach and I almost had to pull over because I thought I was going to throw up.
As I drove back I heard over the radio that the North Tower had fallen and I started to cry. Anger overcame my emotions and then an emptiness fell in the pit of my stomach, a feeling of helplessness, not knowing what to do? As my roommate and I sat watching the news there was an eerie calm over us; we lived right in the landing pattern for EWR and for the next few days the only planes we heard were the military jets flying manuvers up and down the Hudson. We fell asleep on our pullout couch that night with the windows open and the T.V on in case somethinge else happened. I awoke the next morning hoping this was all a bad dream when in reality it did in fact happen. Words can't describe my thoughts.
Being a transplant New Yorker by job occupation I remember the first time I saw New York City. I was 20 years old, just completed flight attendant training, and was having to go to New Jersey against my will. I cried when I stood by a window at EWR airport and realized that I was here! so close to N.Y! How many 20 year olds get the opportunity to be a flight attendant and get to be so close to the City that never sleeps? After being in the N.Y. area for a year I went back home to Houston to fly but immediately realized it was a huge mistake; I missed being up on the East Coast. I came back as soon as possible and felt at home! When the Towers fell and in the days, weeks, and months that followed, I felt cheated and I felt as if a huge hole had been put in my heart. The City had a huge hole in the skyline, the hearts of N.Y. were gone and as I now tell people I didn't realize how in love I was with those two buildings until I woke up one day and they were gone!
I now think of my fallen crew members on a daily basis. They are MY heros! They were the FIRST ones who lost their lives in the line of duty and they're with me every day. We may not have flown for the same carriers but we all shared a love for the skies and I like to think of them as my guardian angels. We will never know what bravery occured that day on those aiplanes. All I know is that the crews on United Airlines flights #175 and #93 and American Airlines flights #11 and #77, their passengers, the numerous professionals in N.Y. (FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, EMS) and the countless civilians who perished that day be remembered for who they were and what they loved doing.</text>

            <elementText elementTextId="128137">
<text>The morning of September 11, 2001, I was working. At the time, I was cleaning houses for a living and I was working away when my cell phone rang. It was my neighbor and good friend asking me if I was watching TV. I asked her what channel and she replied, "Any of them!". I turned on the TV to see the horror unfolding before my eyes. I watched as smoke boiled from the World Trade Center. Seconds later, I watched unbelievingly as a second plane crashed into the 2nd tower. I recall thinking that this surreal feeling must be the same as my mother had spoken of feeling when she watched JFK riding down the street in Dallas and saw him fall over as he was assassinated.

My first thought was to gather my children. My friend who had called me had my 11 month old. My 3 year old and my 14 year old were at preschool and school at the same place. I called the school to see if my children were alright. They had heard the news and were listening to the news on the TV and the children were all upset but the plans were for them to remain at school. Then I called my husband. I remember being perturbed that he didn't seem as upset as I was. As I think back, I realize he was trying to remain calm so I wouldn't freak out. I called my mother and my sister and then my friends and on and on all day. I barely finished cleaning that house that day!

That night I came home and my family sat watching the TV all night in shock. I cried and prayed and was numb because of the horror that our country was going through. In all things, Christ brings good out of evil and through this we all came together. All races, all religions, all political parties, all kinds... we came together, we prayed, we cried, we mourned and we rose together with pride for our heroes and for our country. The attacks only made us more proud to be Americans than we were before. The terrorists helped us to become one when we all were standing apart.

Thank you, God, for giving us reasons, in times of insanity, to be thankful to you for showing Yourself in our lives in all situations. </text>

<text>I grew up in New Jersey and have lived in Colorado for the past 6 years. When I lived in Jersey and would travel the NJ Turnpike, I couldn't help but stare at the twin towers. No matter how many times I saw them they never ceased to awe me. After moving to Colorado, I'd get home to visit a few times a year. Landing at Newark Airport, the first thing I'd look for would be the WTC and I'd know I was home.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, I'd gotten up with my almost 9 month old son and as was our normal daily routine we settled in front of the local news to have his bottle. The broadcast was of the first tower to be hit, and the anchorpersons were still speculating as to what happened, that some pilot has miscalculated and that it was an accident. They then went to a NY station that was broadcasting from a helicopter. The news person was talking about what was going on, when from out of nowhere came the second plane. I stared in astonishment at the screen, and could hear the shock and disbelief in the reporter's voice. I yelled downstairs to my husband to turn on the news, the twin towers had been struck by planes. We began calling family in NY and NJ, and stared in horror at the TV as the towers fell. All that day and for about the two or three weeks after I was dumbstruck, and wept daily for the people killed for no good reason than that they were Americans. I still find it hard to believe it ever happened, but am reminded every time I fly into Newark, and those familiar towers are no longer there to greet me.

<text>After many libations and a nightcap of some smokeable herbs, I found myself catatonic in my married buddy?s one bedroom Manhattanite shoebox dwelling. It was late. He was eyeing me. His look was subtle but it made his point. ?I love you bro but you got to go? were his unspoken words. I don?t blame him. He understood all too well the confusion that engulfed both visitors and natives alike, a confusion that left everyone exhausted both physically and mentally. But I moved slow as I was drunk and very tired. I had spent the day walking through midtown Manhattan, trying to summarize the overall feelings, grasping for a sense of the city?s general state of mind. Impossible. My thoughts and feelings were sporadic at best and there was so much more to think about during this visit to Gotham, a city I knew well. I felt confusion, maybe the same as the 10-year-old French boy that tugged at his mothers dress, pointing to the Squares giant video walls that prominently displayed the Stars & Stripes amid the barrage of Madison Avenues bigger-than-life visions. To me, the language barrier was irrelevant; the child?s inquisitive face exposed a soul both young and old despite his youth. I also felt anger, a natural, instinctual feeling, one instilled in us since the beginning of time. Angry because I didn?t know who or what to blame, or how to rationalize the all too real, tangible evils that exist in our world. It seemed to seep out into the city like a subtle, slow gas leak. It left me wondering what the catalyst would be that will undoubtedly ignite our world into the true apocalyptic flames that?s been predicted since time began. Anger, fear, hatred, confusion, what emotions are left to surface here if any? I saw a lot today. I grew up here and saw old familiar scapes. I saw the New York I remember, with mass people everywhere and the loud, persistent background sounds that sometimes drown out your own thoughts but eventually going unnoticed. I felt a New York that didn?t seem terrorized by the prospects of a brighter future, unsure maybe, but one that will never forget the day our nation suspended itself in disbelief, September 11, 2001. American flags were being hawked on every street corner along with everything and anything else imaginable. A great sea of red, white & blue littered Times Square while most of the foreign visitors just gawked at the buildings that surrounded them, the lights hypnotizing them, not knowing just what to feel. They were not Americans yet I didn?t feel any bias toward them let alone any concern with their nonexistent American patriotism; they were here because it?s all free, free to see and absorb. As I said, I?m not new to the Big Apple, having spent much of my teenage years exploring the many culturally vast sections which makes New York the cornerstones of the world, the gateway to the promised land. I even gave the first professional job of my young adult life to an office in the Trade Center Tower One, once known for it?s majestic heights and engineering beauty, now a tomb for the many who are buried beneath the rubble. Despite the tragedy, this was still New York. I knew the drill. I walked and just kept walking, a born and bred New Yorker who knows not to make eye contact with too many people. I knew the rules, hip to all the midtown scams, the fake Rolex?s, the supposed French designer clothes actually made in Bangladesh sweat shops. Nonchalantly, I dodged taxis and schools of tourists as I continued through the streets. I knew the ebb & flow of how crosswalks were orchestrated and how to swim with the currents of the masses, never missing a step. Despite the emptiness of the downtown skyline, the air still had that New York electricity that never ceases to energize me and I felt no threats. An electricity mixed with a hint of the metallic smoke still seeping from our Nations wound. New York energy, there is nothing that can substitute it. I was walking the streets where the blood literally spills and reality is as concrete as the magnificent facades that enveloped me. I passed makeshift vigils on many street corners, people would stop to light candles or leave flowers. Firemen gathered in front of their stations as if they were protecting their turf from invaders, all in full gear. Their ?missing? were proudly displayed in pictures which hung from the stations brick face. Policemen alertly walked their beats while tourists approached them to ask for directions, disrupting their thoughts that would otherwise be focused on their fallen brethren. As I waited on a corner to safely jaywalk, I became affixed on the newsprint that clung to the street pole. It was moving, it was defining, it was engrossing. This was an image worthy of freezing in time. I snapped a few shots with an archaic digital camera I brought with and continued to document my stroll. Due to memory constraints (the camera?s, not mine) as well as a west coast brain in this New York minute, I walked back to my hotel to rest and unload the images I managed to capture. My sanctuary was modest, I had an upgraded room complete with a picture of Warhols? Golden Marilyn and the floor had a constant wet spot on the left side of the bed which greeted my feet every night as I made ready for sleep. I imported the images into my laptop and when the photos downloaded, it was then that I had the time to really look at and feel them.

It was that exact moment I knew for certain I was in the most electric, confused, strongest city in all the world. And then there I was, extremely inebriated and high on my married buddy?s chair. It was getting late, but not New York late; a city that doesn?t sleep has no need for time. But I knew I had to leave, and I did. After goodnights to my friends, I sauntered the streets with an accepted drunken sway. I wore my urban dapper attire; certainly I must have an important place to go. I was drunk, I was tired, I had no place to go. Realizing I was very far from my hotel, I managed to hail a cab. As I shut the door, I sat and surveyed my environment in the confines of a dirty backseat. A dark skinned, mid-eastern driver was at the helm, not more than 30 years of age. He was quick on the gas and quicker on the brake. I told him the address to the hotel then kept quiet from exhaustion. The silence was broken when he turned on the radio. What I heard was very foreign to me, a mid-eastern song that my monolingual ears did not comprehend. It was strange and in light of the recent events, not what I wanted to hear. I asked him for a quite ride, the exact verbiage that?s outlined in the ?passengers rights? placard that sits eye level on the plexiglass barrier I found myself aimlessly staring at. Reluctantly he shut it off and it was then I felt an immediate tension between us. Remind you, I had many cocktails and I?m also a native New Yorker. A good thing as I?ll explain. I?m not shy as most who know me would agree and I felt uninhibited enough to try and engage in conversation with this caramel skinned man. Our ages were close and I thought I?d try and talk with him, as a person, a person alive in this very moment in time. Since we both spent about the same time on this earth, surely we must have some common ground. My segue was a less than smooth, very slurred ?Hey, what?s up man, how?s it going?. One in which he reciprocated. I felt compelled and probably more curious to try and keep him talking, he was truly foreign to me. I asked him how he felt about what happened and that?s when I realized that I was truly in New York, the melting pot where many cultures refuse to melt. This man began explaining why these people would do such a terrible act and it boiled down to his peoples religious beliefs, the religion of Islam. Not the Islam religion that most Muslims practice, but one amended by minds filled with hate. He was not mean or arrogant nor did he try soliciting this religion to me yet he was succinct and to the point as he explained his theology to me. He conveyed to me why his religion, a religion I?m completely ignorant of, conflicts with the freethinking philosophy of the Western world. My ignorance fueled my curiosity and I continued to ask him many more questions. Questions that would otherwise be considered politically incorrect, but ones in which he felt no discomfort in answering, and he did. I learned from this foreigner. Like the unsettling, sobering fact that many people in the world vehemently disagree with and despise the Western world, the free world, and all its freedoms and philosophies. I learned that there are people so dedicated to their beliefs that they would gladly and proudly die for them in war, a Jihad. Martyrdom is the highest form of sacrifice for their religious beliefs; fanatics take it to the suicidal level which he quickly agreed was not acceptable. It was possible he was patronizing me and as a cab driver in my America, he had better. The Jihad, as he explained, is a war in which a Muslim follower will kill for the good of his God, whatever that person conceives this good to be. A Muslim belief passed down through all generations and is taught from birth. I?m a spiritual man, an educated man and follow no one true religion but I hung onto every word this man said and truly began to understand how a Muslim views his life as inconsequential in this world. This left me thinking that this very thought process couldn?t possibly be policed, thoughts are free and can easily be kept to oneself. A thought process that calls for a Jihad, a belief, a war based on misunderstandings, divided religions and governments. I continued to ask him questions, unpointed and with sincerity. Questions I needed answered to help me understand the harsh reality and the magnitude of hate which caused this historical event to transpire on 9/11/01. With all his explanation I still couldn?t find it and I knew I couldn?t sway his thinking, nor did I try. He clearly understood his ideologies, I did not. What was clear to me were the worlds religious barriers, barriers that are much stronger and tensile than any physical element and more embedded than one between skin colors or social classes. He extended me the same courtesy of letting our views be our own and we just openly talked, two men, sharing our two different views on this life. He educated me and helped me try and understand what was in his head and I did the same for him. The end result was that we were two persons who have completely different mindsets from one another, ones which will most likely never change. He explained that his life, or more importantly, his afterlife is predestined and nothing that happens to him in this world is relevant. Nothing. A very sobering thought as I realized that we as a race, a human race, are so complex, segregated and stubborn in our own ways that the inevitable end will come. It is now that the chaos theory makes perfect sense. My ride was over.

As I counted the money to pay him, I thanked him for talking to me as candidly as he did. We shook hands. As he pulled away, I stood in midtown and looked around. I was still drunk. A drunken realist who believes that we as a race are ultimately doomed by our differences, but this was New York where time is irrelevant and I was sure I?d see tomorrow. I looked at my watch only because it was there, and then made my way to my room. It?s just a matter of time I thought, contradicting the timelessness in which New York exists. A matter of time I may never see in my life and I can?t give too much concern for the overall outcome. That will be left to fate. ?Ultimately? can be a long, long way off or it can mean we are just now witnessing the start of the end. It all depends on what you believe, who you talk to, or exactly what you care to ask them.

<text>On the evening of Sept.13. 01 my wife and I were watching the TV news when the newscaster said " we have all the volunteers we need and all of the supplies so please dont send any more -------except for those special resperators, those of you who use them know who you are, call this number, and a number was flashed across the screen. As a retired Asbestos worker, I knew they were talking about High efficiency particulate air "HEPA" resperators, I called the number that was on the TV and the person I talked to said they did indeed need the HEPAs. I then called a friend in Springfield Mo. and asked if he would get some resperators for me. I left the next morning and picked them up. I then started calling on my cell phone to other people in the business My next stops were, Indianoplis In., Dayton Oh., Charleston W. Va. and Pittsburg Pa. When I left Pittsburg, my truck was full, so there was no need to make other calls. I got to Roseland N.J. I stopped at the police station and slept for a couple of hours. When I awoke, the policeman on duty escorted me toward the Lincoln Tunnel. On yhe New York side I went to the staging area. When the people there asked what I had I answered "HEPA" resperators. they immediately escorted me towards the towers. All of the films will show that before Sept. 16 the workers were wearing paper maskes, after that date, they were wearing the HEPAs. on my return home later that nite I was listening to N.P.R. radio when Margot Addler was interviewing a worker comming out of Ground Zero. "What did you do today" ""I pulled out three bodies but they were micro""What do you mean, micro"" You know, pieces, we have been doing it with masks, but today someone brought resperators" That made my trip home a little better. When I got home I learned I had been nominated for the Presidential Medal Of Freedom, by a journalist from Branson Mo. by the name of John Simpers</text>

<text>I was at a Chervon in Cross Lanes WV and was filling my tank, it was 8:48 I think. This man in a panic ran over to me and told me one of the World Trade Centers had been hit by a plane. I knew it was attack because of the work that I do. Any pilot would have ditched the plane or tired to land it and certainly would not have hit the on object in its way head on.

I tried to explain to the gentleman that we were under attack and to go home to his loved ones. He was I suppose upset and unable to understand and he didn't know me. I preceeded to work to my Government building as I do every other day, this day was a day I am sure they needed us. We were released from work at approx. 13:00. I went home to my local town Hurrican, WV and headed to the largest pub or traven around and calmed people to down all day the best of my ablity.

Public service is its on reward.............. We have much to lose in America and freedom is never free.

God bless you every one.</text>

<text>On Sept. 11, 2001, I was at the Sterling Grade School library where I work as a media specialist. When my co-worker got a phone call from her husband telling her to turn on the library's TV, we watched in shock and horror at what was happening. Since the library is one of the few places in the school that has cable television, teachers stopped in throughout the day -- I was there when many people on our staff learned of the day's tragic events.

At this time I was five months pregnant with my first child. All I could think about was, "How can this be happening? What kind of world am I bringing this child into?" Since that day, we have heard many stories of babies born since that day who will never know their fathers. That is a pain I cannot imagine.

Older generations remember where they were when Kennedy was assassinated. I can remember being in a 5th grade classroom when the Challenger exploded, the teacher bringing in a radio and all of us huddled around it, listening in shocked disbelief. A new generation of Americans will always, always remember where they were and what they were doing on 9/11/01.

This event has made me so proud to be an American. Like the might phoenix, we will rise again from the ashes.</text>

<text> I work for a Transit Company which transports the disabled, handicapped and the elderly to and from appointments Etc. On September 11, 2001 I was in my vehcile waiting for another ride and talking to my girlfriend when the first plane hit. Of course being from Minnesota I had no way of knowing what the weather conditions were in New York so I figured someone really messed up a flight plan. When the second plane hit I knew instinctively something was really wrong. Not until the Petagon was hit did it sink in that we might be at war and all thoughts went to how to protect my loved ones and where is this going to lead. I am a Viet Nam Vet and I was ready to do anything again for this Country.

I became very solemn and quiet around 11am and I remember my last two passengers that day as if it were yesterday. They were man and wife and both physically and mentally challenged. The wife was sobbing and asking her husband what was going to happen to them. She was very scared. Her husband did his best to console her and I'll never forget those two people and the feeling we all had about what was going to happen to us and this Beautiful Country we live in.

I clocked out at about 1pm and, like the rest of the country, I went home and was horrified at what I saw on the TV. There were no tears yet, but they came later. I have three children and my girlfiend has two children and on Friday night we lit candles for all of them and let them burn through the night. We held each other and cried and cried and cried. As I sit and write this I know those candles were not only for our Children, but for all the Children and Mothers and Fathers lost in the raids of 9/11.

For all the families who lost loved ones on 9/11 I want say you have my deepest sympathy. To all the those whos helped in the aftemath I want to say THANK YOU!!!

    GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

              <text>
I was in my office working when I received a call from my wife, Sharron. She asked if I knew what was happening to our country. I did not. She was crying and told me that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center and one had also hit the Pentagon. Then I heard voices outside of my office and after telling my wife that I would call her back, I went across the hall where a TV was turned on to CNN. Several co-workers were watching in dismay. As we all stood, not speaking, watching the burning North Tower, we saw the 2nd plane hit the South Tower. It was one of the most frightening things I have ever seen. We were all in shock and couldn't believe what we were seeing. Then it happened, the North Tower began to collapse. All we could think about were the people still inside of the Tower. Moments later, the South Tower fell.

About 10:30, we were told to go home, but there was such a traffic jam since many of the bridges had been closed. I waited until noon to leave after hearing the 14th street Bridge was open to South bound traffic. As I crossed the bridge, my vehicle was the only one on the bridge. People were walking on the other side of the bridge, heading back into DC. Then I saw the flames and smoke rising from the Pentagon. I guess it really hit home with me at that point. I just could not understand how anyone or anything could have done this, especially to the Pentagon. The vision of the collapsing towers kept playing over and over in my mind, then the 2nd plane hitting the South Tower. As I approached the George Washington Parkway exit, I saw a lone man, standing next to the guard rail of the 14th Bridge. He was waving a large American Flag. I hooked my horn and waved to him. I didn't realize at the time that the American flag would shortly become an everyday scene on cars, trucks, buildings, office doors, and almost everywhere! And, almost one year later, the flags still fly, and my guess is they will continue to do so. United We Stand, America.

September 11, 2001 is a day that Americans will never forget. Mad, yes. Afraid, yes. Deeply saddened and sickened by this terrorist act, of course.

May God Bless America and ease the pain of those who lost their loved ones on 911.

<text>I am an advertising executive for cable televsion in Lexington, Kentucky. I was entering our offices that September morning and I looked up to take a quick peek at the tv in the main lobby, as I did every morning. I noticed that the scene was of the World Trade Center building on fire. I asked the receptionist what was happening and all she knew at that moment was that a plane had struck the tower. I thought how horrible. Was it a miscue from the pilot? How could a mistake this terrible happen? I proceeded to my cubicle and turned on the tv that we had in our areas. Getting down to daily business, but keeping an ear out for any news on the plane crash, my day and life completely changed in the next moment. In that instant, when the next tower was hit, I realized that America and it's people had changed forever. I stayed close to a tv set, either at work or home, for hours and days on end. I didn't want to see the carnage, but couldn't bear not to see it either. And I am so glad I watched. For what I saw was not just pain and suffering, but hope, patriotism, brotherhood, kindness and love. Today is the first anniversary of that terrible day and I still become upset when I see photos or hear people speak. But I know that I am handing over a strong, caring and wonderful country to my grandchildren. I also know that I will be okay and so will America. We all hurt and eventually we all heal because we're all Americans. </text>

<text>I'm from a small town in western North Carolina. In late August 2001 I moved my oldest son to an apartment on Staten Island. He had always wanted to live and go to school in New York. Leaving him there was devastating.

On the morning of 9/11 I came home from taking my younger children to school. I was horrified when I turned on the TV and saw the events unfolding. When the second plane hit the WTC, I paniced. My son was supposed to be in the city that morning. All I could think of was the possibility that I would loose my son. I didn't think of all the others trapped in that building. I was selfish. A lot of sons, daughters, mothers and fathers were in that building, some by chance and some by a call to duty.

Late in the day my son finally called to let us know that he was OK and to ask me to come and get him. I was elated that he wanted to come home. I got to NYC around 11:00pm. Needless to say that it was impossible to get into the city or even over to Staten Island so I spent the night in Jersey.

On the morning of Sept. 12th I found out why NYC would survive and recover. It took me over 6 hours to get across the Goenthals bridge. I finally took the first exit off the expressway. I thought I could easily find Ryan's appartment. I was wrong. I got turned around and couldn't find his street. While stopped at a light, I saw a man crossing the street. Please remember I'm from a small southern town. This was the biggest, meanest looking black man I had ever seen. But I was determined to find my son, so I called to this man and asked for directions. He told me how to find my sons appartment and even gave me a tip on a shortcut. I was determined to reward his kindness. I offered to pay him, and when he refused money I offered to give him a ride. I will always remember his reply. He told me: "No thank you, I only have a few blocks to go. You go get your son and be careful."

I took the time to look around and really see the people of New York. Everywhere people were coping with the tragedy. People crying but still carrying on their everyday lives. I have always been proud of my son, but at that moment in history, I was proudest of the fact that for even a short time he was a citizen of the greatest city on earth. Terrorist can tear down buildings but no one can beat down the spirit of Americans and NYC proved it beyond words during this terrible tragedy. I wish I could tell everyone in New York how grateful I am. You took care of my son while he was there and all of you made sure that he came home safe.

God Bless.</text>

<text>I got up early that day and left my house before 7:30am because it was an election day, and I needed to go to Home Depot for supplies to finish a project I was working on at home. I got back at 8:50am and was putting things away when the phone rang. I started not to answer so I could finish what I was doing, but for some reason I needed to answer the phone. My brother-in-law Conny was on the line and didn't chit chat as usual. He asked me if I had heard from my husband Reggie, and didn't he work near the World Trade Center. I told him, my husband worked about five blocks from the WTC, and I hadn't heard from Reggie, but why was he asking. He told me to turn on the television. It was as if I was watching a a promo for a new movie release, except there was total chaos and complete pandemonium everywhere. I called my husband immediately, and found out he was alright. He told me what he was watching from his office window, and as we were speaking, the second plane flew past the window hitting the second tower. I told him to get out of there, but he said he would be fine, and besides, there was no place to go. The streets were full of people, debris, the subways had been closed, and there was no bus service. He said he would be alright, and nothing else would probably happen. Then the Pentagon was hit. I called him again and begged him to leave, and I guess just to apease me he said he would leave soon. I then began calling family and friends to make sure they were alright. We had a friend that worked for NYS department of Taxation in the WTC, but I found out his office had been moved. But someone very special to us did work at WTC. Michele worked on the 104th floor of the first tower hit for Cantor Fitzgerald. This was unbelieveable, I had just seen her at church on Saturday. We hoped and prayed that she was late for work that day. I called her mother Winsome, a family friend of more than fifteen years. She was so strong and comforting to me at a time when she needed my strength. Winsome displayed so much faith and courage, and strength that I was embarassed for my inability to comfort to her in her time of need. Over the next several days we called everywhere, watched everything. Winsome and friends went to every hospital where victims had been taken, left fliers everywhere, attended the meetings, but in our heart of hearts we knew she wouldn't be there. We prayed for a miracle as did hundreds of thousands others. We held out for the hope that survivors would be found in all the devastation. Michele was lost to us. Michele who was one of the sweetest, kindest young ladies (27) you would have had the privilege of knowing. She and my children had grown up together, and it was almost as if I had lost one of my own, but I hadn't, and Winsome had. Winsome had suffered another devastating lost five years earlier when she lost her husband Michael to a brain tumor. We did whatever we could to be there for Winsome and Monique (Michele's younger sister), but the enormity of what had happened overwhelmed us all. I was fortunate. My husband eventually came home safely, but we were never to see Michele again. Michele was two weeks from graduating from New York Resturant School where she had been studying to be a chef. She would have left Cantor Fitgerald to start a new life doing what she loved, cooking, but I guess God had another plan. It is said that only the good die young. And on September 11, 2001 so many good people were taken from us, and although we were blessed and fortunate to have known these people there will always be a hole in our hearts, and a void left that can never be filled. Respectfully written by Beverly French in memory and with love for Michele Ann Nelson.</text>

For no reason at all, and out of the blue, this dream came back to me. I had it maybe 8 months to a year ago.

In the dream I remember riding the New York City subways. They were grimy and covered with graffiti. Bums and bag ladies rode along with us.

Out in the city, we knew a bomb was coming. It was late afternoon. We were all trying to get out, get away, but didn?t know how. I ended up just walking and walking, until I got to somewhere like Queens. The sun was setting. A bomb came. We watched the sky light up an eerie color. I was worried it was the end of the world. I was so afraid.

It?s been exactly 5 weeks but feels more like 5 days. It?d be a joke to say people are "getting over" September 11. It?s not easy when now we are bombing Afghanistan and someone is mailing powder laced with anthrax to people like Tom Brokaw.

The sense of surreal continues. On the news they barely mention the cleanup in New York (4,600 still missing). Instead it?s all about anthrax and the latest hoaxes and on-line polls about whether or not we?re afraid, then maybe a little bit of news about the bombing, which always seems to be the same: we?re "making progress."

This is why people are not healing ? the terror continues. It?s almost as if real life is on hold and we?ve just been drafted to run around, react, and put out fires.

I am not really afraid. I?m just upset this is happening to our country. Some days all of this seems either horribly bleak or bizarre.

Every day I think of the World Trade Center. And the planes. I wonder if there will ever be a day when I don?t? And if I?M like this, I can?t even fathom being a New Yorker, or having lost family or friends.

So the peace has not yet come. People are buying gas masks and trying to get their hands on antibiotics. Last night ? I swear ? Tom Brokaw shook a little capsule of pills in his hand at the end of the broadcast. "In Cipro we trust," he said with this eerie grin. He thought it was delightfully ironic or something. I just felt sick.

This afternoon I was reading the "Today in History" section of the paper. On this date in 1983, 241 U.S. soldiers were killed by a suicide bomber in Beirut. Then I think of the present, of 5,200 people dead. 241 used to seem like such a big number. It makes 5,000, as Rudy Guiliani said, feel "unbearable."

There are choices ? watch the news and hear the panic or don?t watch and wonder "is anything new going on?" Today they reassured us the President doesn?t have anthrax. Well that?s a relief. Others are dying. What are we going to do, stop getting mail?

At church they talk about how God destined each one of us to live in this time. My question is ? why? Because the Little House on the Prarie era is looking mighty attractive right now.

It?s not that I doubt God. I know He?s there. I?m just scared He?s mad and not listening. I don?t want the rest of my life to be chaos. To me that sounds utterly depressing. I keep praying for mercy ? for me, for everyone. Please God? Help us to know what the heck we?re supposed to do. I feel afraid of God right now, like He?s mad and letting us try to figure things out, which is of course, hopeless.

Then there is this contrast: last night I stayed up to watch the Yankees ? yes, the Yankees ? clinch the American League pennant. If you?d told me that last year, I would?ve shuddered at the thought. But yes, I watched the Yankees beat the Mariners to make it to the World Series.

Yankee Stadium was charged. I don?t know if I?ve ever seen it, I don?t know, vibrating like that. As soon as they won, the PA system there cranked up Sinatra. Suddenly, booming out across the field was that familiar intro:

Start spreading the news...I?m leaving today,
I want to be a part of it...New York, New York.

Everyone in the crowd joined in singing at the top of their lungs. Joe Torre went and hugged Mayor Guiliani. The fans kept screaming. A month ago that very stadium had been half-full with people silent or weeping, attending a massive memorial service. Maybe it was that day the animosity I?ve always felt for New York melted away. At least for the most part.

So the Yankees won, and as I was falling asleep, I thought of all those ecstatic fans leaving and getting in their cars and seeing the empty skyline and having it all come rushing back. I prayed for them. I prayed for the emptiness that would start to settle, as they came back to the quiet, crawled under the covers, and like me, tried to fall asleep.

<text> I remember I was on my way to work when it happened. I got to work and turned on the radio as usual to listen to some music. It was shortly after that when they started to announce that the first tower was in flames. shortly after that they told about the next tower being hit and then knew it was a terroist attack. It was a horrible feeling knowing from what I was hearing about that such a thing was happening. I just couldn't visulize what was going on and I couldn't see it either being at a job where there was no television and I wasn't going to get home before 4:00 that day so all i could go by was what i heard on the radio and what customers were telling me. I didn't know anyone there bit that didn't really matter because it still was so disturbing to me it was like a part of me was there and the people were to me like friends and relatives. I still can't understand to this day how anyone could just kill in cold blood like that! I pray that we never have to witness another day like that again!

I called some friends to make plans for my big day. At 8:45am that all changed. My heart stopped and i couldnt believe what i was seeing. From that moment on september 12th is just another day to me now. I cannot celebrate my birthday Knowing that 3000+ lost their lives for absolutly no reason.Just plain ol' men and women going to work to support there families.I do now have a new found respect for police officers and firefighers. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all those who lost loveones on that tragic day.

           GOD BLESS YOU ALL...

GOD BLESS THESE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA........

I am 38 years old and have never seen such a site. My heart just broke. My husband is in the National Guard, and we know that he could be sent out at any time. We have talked of this, and we both feel that wherever our country needs him, then that is where he needs to be. We both support our country and our leader (President Bush). I have cried for all that have perished, those that are left behind to carry on and for the safety of my husband. For all of the people that have lost loved ones, I pray for you. I pray for peace in your hearts. I know that nothing can ever bring back what you have lost. But we as Americans have to pull together for all. God bless America. And in the now famous words..."Let's Roll". </text>

"I'm Membership Chairman of the PTA and I planned to write PTA membership cards that morning. It's a boring task, so I turned on the television. I was shocked when I saw screen. The first tower had already been hit, and smoke was billowing. I was stunned, and I jumped up and started flipping channels. I listend to numerous excited newscasters explain what was happening, and I couldn't believe it. I started to cry. Then I ran to the telephone and called my husband at work. I was surprised when I talked to him that he already knew, but he hadn't called me. I spent the morning transfixed, actually all day and evening, watching in horror as further disaster unfolded. I kept writing PTA membership cards like a robot. I kept crying on and off. I feared for the future; World War III was on the horizon. I considered picking my daughter up from school. I called my daughter's school and found that it was under lock down. I decided to leave there. All day I noticed jet planes were roaring overhead."

Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell me how.

"My life personally has not changed significantly. Airline travel is more difficult and cumbersome now. This sprong when my daughter and I flew to a baby shower, we experienced the higher security. We couldn't drop our luggage off curbside; my daughter's school scissors were confiscated. Our bodies were scanned, and we had to sit down to have our shoes scenned. I'm more concerned about being prepared for a disaster now, and I read articles about how to prepare for a biological incident. I put some supplies away, and I've gone to internet sites to read more. I read more about current events and lool for omens of impending war. I fear for my chidren and grandchildren's future. One of my friends is the wife of a SEAL. I listen with new interest to her insights about military congflict. I'm amazed at how she is resigned to the possibility of her husband's death. I worry about my 22 year old son, and whether there will be a military draft again. My husband's import business is affected because container shipping by ocean is slower and more expensive. The stock market has crashed and the World Economy is uncertain. Our investments have lost 15% or more.

Q3. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th?

The United States is not invulnerable. It's brought home that terrorism is a worldwide problem, and a global war is a real possibility. We need to beef up our security and drastically improve communication between agencies like the CIA, FBI, state and local governments, and immigration. It's made us more aware how insulated and complacent Americans have become. We live in great comfort and have great liberties but don't appreciate it. September 11th has made us more aware of this. September 11th has been a powerful reminder of how fragile human life is and the importance of family and friends. We need to be less concerned about materialistic things and having more belongings. The love of our family and friends is the most important, and we need to make them our highest priority. The events of September 11th have brought many people back to God and made them reevalutate the meaning of life. We need to learn more about other cultures and religions so we are able to be more tolerant of different beliefs. September 11th taught us how ill-informed and close-minded many of us have become. Most importantly, September 11th should remind us all of the amazing power of the human spirit and its resilience. This was an incredible demonstration that herosim lives inside all of us.

Q4. Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Hav eyour feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th?

No, we did not fly an American flag at home, but my husband did fly a flag at work. I did purchase a flag window-cling and several small American flags. I saved the two paper flags printed in the newspaper to put up. Our civic league posted a flag at our community's entrance. My feelings haven't really changed but my sense of patriotism is stronger. I've noticed a lot of articles about flag etiquette and read them with interest. I think that everyone feels greater patriotism in the United States. September 11th united the diverse American people and brought us together, united us as citizens of the United States.
