Tell us your story: Driving to work that morning, down Rt.9 at about 6:30AM, I remember thinking to myself, what a beautiful day it was going to be. The weather had been so hot in the Hudson Valley during the summer, and it was such a relief to have it cooler with low humidity. I remember thinking it was the first day that you could feel Autumn was on the way. I had a lot of outside chores to do once I got done with work at 4:00PM and was thinking how refreshing the sun and breeze will be after being cooped up all day in the office/plant. I was on the mfg floor, working on one of the automated tools when a buddy stopped and asked if I had heard about the plane that hit one of the WTC towers. I told him that I had not, but made a mental note to check the CNN site when I got back to my office. A half hour later, I found myself sitting in one of the conference rooms at the end of my aisle with 40 other folks and watched as the 2nd plane crashed into the other tower. I don't think a lot of the folks watching grasped the seriousness or even reality of what they were witnessing, even as the 1st tower that was struck, fell to the ground. It was so outrageous, so unbelieveable. After watching the 2nd tower fall, I went back to my desk, quite shaken, and not sure what to do. After getting some news from the CNN website, I decided that I had better finish my work day. The drive home was terrible. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I recall waking up around eight o'clock that morning to prepare for a morning class. I was a senior occupational therapy student at WVU. I rarely turned on the television while getting prepared for school and this morning was no different. I left the house and drove down the road and I remember thinking that my mother should just about be getting to the Pittsburgh airport for her flight to Atlanta that morning. I was quite surprised, however, when I passed her home and her car sat parked in the driveway. I turned my car back around and pulled into the driveway, thinking that something was wrong. As soon as I walked into the house, I saw my mother's stricken look. "Someone has flown into the World Trade Center!" It took a while to register and I was still in disbelief until I turned the corner and saw the television and the catastrophe that was now imposed on the United States. After confirming that my mother would not be flying anywhere that day and calling my police officer husband to relay the horrible news, I headed thirty miles down the highway to school. As I passed cars on the highway, I could see the panic looks of helplessness as we commuters sat riveted to radio news. When I arrived at school, the class was immediantly sent back home to "be with our families on this tragic day". My father worked in the local hospital adjacent to the school, so I made my way to his office. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown was being put on alert if there were to be any survivors from the plane crash that occurred in Somerset Co, PA. No one knew that the heroes in that plane had paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us. My always level-headed father was on edge. Everyone was, you could feel it in the air. Everyone wondered what was going to happen next. It was like the entire country was holding their breath and that feeling was extremely unsettling. In the days that followed, rumors ran rampant. Many people said that the FBI center close to our home was targeted. Everywhere you turned, someone had a story and my eyes rarely stayed dry long. It was like a dull ache inside that never left and you didn't even have to know someone personally who had perished. The grief was the entire country's burden. I still have trouble watching those planes fly into the towers and I have yet to work up enough nerve to visit the site where Flight 93 saw it's last moments. Let us pray that our children will always know the story of the heroes that gave their life that day. God Bless America. "no mom...I'm still in bed" "turn it on" so I go in the living room and turned on to the "today" show and it was a shot of plane number two hitting tower number two...I thought it might have been something out of a hollywood movie...then it hit me that it was the WTC. I picked up the phone at my computer desk and I was just like "Mom, is this real? is this really happening?"...the rest of the day I just sat there in front of the tube, fully clothed, ready for the day, but just sitting there....watching all the horror unfold...my mother and i talked six times that day...more than any other time we talked....I felt angry and sick and upset all at the same time....this just goes to show you how cowardly someone can be.....those who strike the first blow are cowards. All day at school the teacher were talking in the halls about something ,but we didn't know what. So on my way home from school we went by a shell gas station and the flag was at half staff. when we saw that I knew something was wrong, but the World Trade Center was the last thing i thought happend. We went by another gas station and another and they were all packed. when Igot home no one was there so I called my mom on her cell phone she said that she was getting gas because of what happend and I didn't know what happend yet so she told me to turn on the T.V. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember the events of 9-11-01, very vividly. I walked into my 2nd period class, not knowing anything had happened. As soon as I took my seat, my teacher turned on the TV. The whole class fell silent as we started to watch the 2nd plane crash into the 2nd tower. No one really knew if what we were seeing was really happening or if it was a movie or something like that. No one could believe that something that horrible was actually happening, here in the U.S. I remember watching with tears welling up in my eyes. I couldn't imagain someone hating someone else so much that they could kill thousands of inocent people. My teacher stood up and told us what was happening, as fair as he could tell. Than he sat down and didn't talk again. I was scared. I didn't understand what had happened or what was going to happen after it was all over. I sat and wrote notes to my friend Michael, because he was 17 and knew more about what was going on. He was almost in tears. He thought that we would probably end up going into WWIII. That scared me so much. My cousin was in boot camp, for the Marine's, while all of this was happening. Later, I found out that he hadn't even heard that anything had happened until a couple of weeks later. Through out the rest of the day, I was pretty much in a daze. I cried off and on with friends. I went to my third block class, which was French I. My teacher was from France and had seen terrorist attacks before, so it didn't really effect him as much as it did us. In that class we discussed what had happened and what we thought would come of it. But then we also just did work as if it were a regular day. During that class period my mom came to school and wanted to pick me up early. She wanted to get her whole family together and know for a fact that they were safe. I really didn't want to go home though. I wanted to stay with my friends at school where I felt sheltered in a way. I guess she understood and she decided that I could stay. I went to my last block and just talked with friends about what happened. It was hard and tearful. After school was over I went and hung out with some of my friends at the side of the school. But when I got over there I had to leave. Some of the kids were actually happy about what had happened. They thought that the end of the world was coming and they were happy about it. I just couldn't even comprehend that. So I left. I walked home as quickly as possible. My little brother Jesse was there with my mom and other brother Matt. They were all glued to the TV. My mom decided to turn it off when Jesse started getting really upset. That night my mom, grand mother, and I went to my friend Laura's church for a special service. My mom was so upset because she grew up in New York. We prayed and cried together. It was very hard to deal with. When we got home all I wanted to do is go to bed. Jesse was scared and wanted to sleep with someone, so I let him get in bed with me. That night, I think I prayed more than I ever had in my whole life. I prayed for all the families who had lost anyone. Today it's exactly one year later. A lot has happened since last year. Watching the whole thing over and over, on TV, again is hard. But, it just makes me stop and think about everything that I do have today. It makes me feel very thankful. I lit a white candle and let it burn, as a symbol of rememberance of everyone who had died. She began to tell me and I clicked on CNN.com on my computer. Watching the events unfold before me I desperately tried to call any one from my job (I work at the Rotary District Office in Kalamazoo, MI). After leaving message after message I finally got a hold of Dr. Ed Foster a vet in Charlotte, MI. He was with a patient but took my call. I told him what was happening and his first reaction was "You're from there aren't you?" I said I was and he told me to close the office and leave. I promised I would make up the hours and he told me he didn't care about the hours and that I "needed to be at my apartment where people could find me". I went home, forward my phone to my roommmate's sisters house and the second I walked in her infant daughter smiled and put her arms up for a hug. I went to class, took a test, and talked with my friends. At around noon I was walking with a bunch of my friends to history class after lunch. The school was unusually quiet, then all of a sudden a student went running through the halls shoutng "A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon!" my friends and I were not amused "That is not a funny joke" I replied. Then I stepped into my history class and only about hlaf of hte class was there. Everyboyd was silent, our history teacher decided to tell us what had happened. He did not know very much, but he told us all that he did know. "A commercial plane has crashed into both World Trade Center Towers, and the Pentagon. I am not sure hwere all of the planes came from, but I think that one of them was flying out of Dulles." I was in total shock, how could such a horrible thing happen to us, the United States of America? Then my heart sank, I remembered that my dad was flying out of Dulles that morning for a business trip. When it was time to go to our next class I was fighting the tears that were forming in my eyes. In my next class, Math, the teacher went about the business of a regular school day. However my friend who's dad was working in the Pentagon that day, were holding hands trying to comfort each other, we were both afraid that our fathers might be lost. When the bell rang we walked out to the locker commons, normally the noisest place in our school was silent. I got on my bus and no one spoke, our bus driver had the radio on and we were all listening. I got home to find out that my father and my friend's father were absolutley fine. Unfortunatly one of my other friends was not as lucky, her father was a passenger on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. Later that night I was on the phone full of anger, disbelief, and sadness. How could someone do such an evil thing! It?s Martin Luther King Day ? gray, foggy, and cold. This time I am here with my parents. The last time they were here was maybe five, six years ago. After arriving we take the subway to the City Hall/Brooklyn Bridge stop. I'm amazed, still relatively unfamiliar with the layout of the city, that the bridge really is right there, rising up into the fog. We walk in the opposite direction, downtown, as icy drops pelt our shoulders. It is truly a miserable day to be sightseeing. My hands are already numb with cold. We brush quickly past St. Paul?s Chapel and the soggy, yellowing flowers, stopping for only a moment to read a few notes and signs. Much of the ink is running in the rain. "That was it," I say, trying to catch my breath. "Did you see the cranes a block over? That?s where it is." For my parents, the moment is anti-climatic. "You can?t see anything," my mom says. I know what she means. This isn?t our place. We can?t picture how it was before. Today Ground Zero is not our destination. We want to take the ferry to Ellis Island. The Statue of Liberty is still closed to visitors. After purchasing tickets the woman behind the glass tells us we just missed a boat, and that we need to get in line, because it takes a long time to get through security now. The rain is drenching us. My umbrella seems useless as the wind whips it around and droplets cascade down my pant legs. We groan at the sight of at least one hundred people in front of us in line, waiting to get into the "security tent." We stand behind two older couples, one British and one American, who are trying to put on their best front about this ? laughing at the puddles and the cold, joking with one of the National Park Service worker, who is keeping an eye on the line. The man, who must be in his thirties, has a surprising gleam in his eye as he chats with the crowd. "I?m sorry, but this is just the way it is now," he keeps saying. "We have to have this level of security." But he doesn?t sound resigned. When we finally get into the screening area, they make us take off hats, gloves, and belts; open bags; turn out our pockets. We have missed another ferry because the searching takes so long. Finally, we are excused to move on and wait. On the boat finally, I revel in warmth and dryness. Looking out across the dreary waters, I can barely see the city, which is shrouded in fog and low clouds. At Ellis Island, we eat, look around a bit, and grab brochures, but it?s not until we go up to the next floor, to the Great Hall, that the history of the place hits me. Reaching the top of the stairs, I stop for a moment and look at almost nothing. The room is practically empty. Sunlight has come and now streams through the windows; my feet echo as I take a few steps. I can feel people here. I hear laughter and chattering voices. I see, hazily, faces of hundreds of people. They all came here. It?s almost hard to talk in that room. It?s better to stand quietly and imagine. Close to sunset, we wait for the ferry back. Outside the day has drastically changed. The sky is orange. I can see the city. On the lawn in front of the museum a flock of geese peck at the ground, covered with the faintest blanket of snow that clings to the blades of grass. Our youngest daughter, a senior in High School had left for school. We were watching the Today show. Right in front of our eyes was the most fearful sight we had ever witnessed. Our America was under attack. We have a son in the military and we immediately called him. Amazingly, he had not even been made aware of the situation yet. He too was shocked but more fitting, he was angry. He told us he was ready to do whatever his country needed him to do. We told him how proud we were of him and to remember that we loved him. Our son-in-law is a border patrol agent in San Diego, Ca. Our daughter called us to tell us her husband was told to go home and pack his bags and to be at the airport in 2 hours. He was not told where he would be going. Our daughter was scared and yet so proud. Our son-in-law called that night to tell her that he was in New York City and would be guarding the airport. He would be there for 30 days at least and working 18 hours a day. He was able to check in with our daughter and their two small children daily. We did ask him if he had visited Ground Zero. He told us yes, and that he really did not want to talk about it. The days that followed were such a blurr. Our country was walking in a daze. We were no exception. Due to a recent car accident I was at home and could not quit watching the television. It made me cry, it made me mad and it also made me proud to be an American. It made me proud that we had a son serving his country and a son-in-law who was able to work as a Border Patrol Agent, his childhood dream. We asked our soon to graduate daughter what she would like as a graduation gift and we were amazed that she told us that she wanted to go to New York City. She had already been there two times with her High School Choir, but she really wanted to go back. I remember her telling us after her first two visits that the people did not seem very friendly. Two weeks after she graduated we went to New York City and spent a week enjoying the beautiful landmarks and yes, the FRIENDLY people. Everyone you walked by would smile, make eye contact and walk with a sense of pride. Our daughter was amazed. One morning I was looking out the hotel window to the busy street below. I heard a fire truck moving through the traffic. What I saw next still gives me the goosebumps. The people on the street stopped walking and saluted the firemen. I could not hold back the tears. Our daughter did not want to go to ground zero, but my husband and I did. As we were leaving to go and visit this tragic site, she decided that she did want to go. We got on a subway and made our way there. It was a quiet ride. There were hundreds of people gathered. You did not hear voices but just faint wispers and sobs. It was the most sobering place I had ever visited, even more sobering than when I visited the USS Arizona in Hawaii. This was not a military strike, my God it was innocent people who just wanted to work and live an honest living. As we walked on the surrounding streets, almost feeling badly that we were walking on the dust that was all around, made me wonder whose body dust I may be intruding upon. This should be a sacred area, I thought. Our daughter, who wanted this trip as a gift, sobbed quietly. You see, she had just been there 2 months before the attack and saw the Twin Towers with all their splendor and strength. As we left the area, we didn't converse much, what was there to say anyway? I could feel my heart pounding inside of me. My knees felt a little weak. My big strong husband had tears running down his cheek. This was an emotion he saved only for the loss of family or for joy at the birth of our children and grandchildren. We walked away silently and decided that it was time to be strong and be proud to be an American. What better way to get this feeling than to take the ferry to see the Lady of Liberty. Standing there strong and beautiful, still welcoming people from all countries to this great AMERICA. On our subway trip back to our hotel, I found myself looking at people wondering if they had lost a loved one there. I said a silent prayer to give each person strength to go on. I can't pretend to know what the loved ones are feeling. After a few days we left this great city of New York. I think we all three felt that we had left part of our souls behind. I do know, we left better AMERICANS! Our daughter has returned to New York City again, but did not go back to ground zero. My husband and I plan to visit again as soon as we can. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I arrived to work at 8:30am. We got the news here at work minutes after the first plane hit. My first thought was that it was a plane accident or maybe a helicopter that hit the tower. Somewhere between 8:45am and 9:00am I called my mother, she works for the City of New York Home Care Services, 14th Street. When I called her she knew that a plane had hit the tower but, was not clear on what had actually happened. While we were on the phone people in her office were beginning to hear the news and she hung up to see what was going on. At that point, I learned of the second tower being hit and everyone at work began gathering around the television watching the news. The phone lines in that area were down and I was not able to contact my mother again until 7:00pm that night when she arrive at home. My mother was 61 years old and all I could do was pray that she was safe. She had left work around 10:00am that morning walking with a group of ladies from her job. She walked most of the way uptown and into the Bronx where she was able to get on several buses that would get her to Mount Vernon, NY. Thank God. While visiting the city in July, 2002 I went to the site where the Towers once stood, it was painful to see. 911 effected us all, I have thought of all the thousands of people in that building then and every day after. The day before my mom had left on a flight to Zurich, Switzerland. His doctor told us to come into the office at 7 a.m. He sent us to the hospital, because his fever was so high and he was so young. We had just admitted him into the hospital, and were waiting in his room while the doctors were performing test. The news came on and told us that the trade centers had been hit. We watched in silence as they told everyone what happened. My husband is the National Guard, his boss called and asked him if he heard what happened. My husband went to the army base as I waited with our son in the hospital. For the next week I watched the news broadcast, from his hos[ital room, about the horrors that had just occurred. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up that morning like any other when I was in college: tired. But that morning was different. My friend called me on the phone and said, "Turn on the news, something happened to the World Trade Center." So I flipped it on, casually, and I saw something to the effect of, what the news anchors were describing as, as small jet hit one of the towers. My first thought was "Wow, what a terrible accident." I didn't give it an overwhelming amount of thought, however, as I got ready for my class at 9:40 am. I didn't even hear until I got to class that the second tower had gotten hit and that the second tower was gone. The professor didn't make much notice of it because I suspect he didn't really see the news reports until after class. After that it was pandemonium - people saying that the towers were gone, both of them - how could that be possible? Saying that the Pentagon had been attacked? News reports of missing jets? Immediatly upon hearing that both towers were hit I knew we were at war. I rushed to find my mother, who happened to be working at the university I was attending. We frantically tried to call my grandparents, both federal government employees, after hearing some reports of a car bomb outside the state department (which later turned out to be false). Thankfully we got in touch with them and they were ok, but campus was a mess. People crying, glued to the TVs, trying to call loved ones and not being able to get through. At my school, there were a lot of people from the New York City area, and they were hit hard. My friend's sister was in the south tower and evacuated before it got hit, thank God. It was just about the most terrible day I can remember. I think we should all contribute where we were that day, what we were doing, so that we all remember what it was like on that most horrible of days. I wrote a poem for the third anniversary of 9/11, to hopefully in some small way try to honor those people who answered the call and rushed into the building, and anyone who stayed and helped out the injured and sick. Those are the true heroes of 9/11. We owe it to them to remember. As the earth spins round and round the sun Babies are born and daily errands done. We gather here and now to mark the time When buildings burned, into them heroes climbed. Their resting place, this hallowed ground Became that day a burial mound. It was a Tuesday and the dance team I am a part of had already begun rehearsal for the upcoming pep rally on Friday. We were learning "Love Shack" because the theme was supposed to be "70's" and I remember our 2nd lieutenant Jenniann was explaining what we were supposed to do. The music was blaring so loud when we heard our principal, Dr. Veach come over the P.A. system. We missed the first half of what he said because we didn't turn the music down in time, but our director had heard that there was some sort of tragedy and to please not turn on any t.v.'s or radios. Everybody thought that one of our classmates had gotten in a car wreck or something. . .we never thought something this huge could ever happen to us, in a "perfect" community like Westlake. We kept on rehearsing while our director was called to a staff meeting to find out what really was going on. Finally, at 9:30, we had "Circle", a time for us to reflect on how much we had accomplished in practice and compliment each other on a good rehearsal. It was then, in this large circle of 45 girls that our director told us that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Centers. Immediately everyone gasped in horror, not wanting it to be true and there were comments like, "Who would do this?" and "How can someone be this sick?" Everything after that was crazy, and we all ran into the locker room to change. Instead of our usual punk rock music blaring on our favorite radio station, we listened in silence to the DJ explaining what had happened. During 3rd period, my English teacher had the t.v. going and we watched the towers fall on a staticky t.v. I remember calling my mom during this class, even though we're not allowed to use our cell phones, just to make sure she was okay. In fourth period, my History class, I picked up a packet on Mwambutsa IV of Africa as I walked in the door. My teacher was not as perky as he usually was and he also had his t.v. going, even though the school board had asked all schools to turn off all t.v.'s and radios. Throughout the day, it was all people could talk about. My friends even joked about theories of who might have done it. It never really hit us that people were suffering and losing loved ones. Finally, in seventh period, my Chemistry teacher told us an escape plan, just in case something was to happen. We were all to go down the the "G-wing" underground and we had to stay with her, no matter what because she was responsible for us. Hearing this was a total wake-up call...that what had happened over 8 hours ago was affecting all of us on the opposite side of the country. I was now afraid to go home because it would mean going home to an empty house, without anyone to help me in case something did happen (I live with my mom who works late nights). I started thinking about this book I read in the 7th grade, about a guy and his girlfriend and how they tried to escape the effects of an atomic bomb, but for the life of me, I couldn't remember a single thing they did to save themselves. I called my best friend who lives in Dallas to see how she was coping. What she told me was probably the most frightening thing I had ever heard. Her dad had just flown to New York the night before and they couldn't get a hold of him and her sister went to college near the Pentagon. I didn't know what to say or what to do to help her through. All I could say was "I'm sorry." I'm not a very spiritual person so I couldn't offer any encouraging verses or pray for her because I just didn't know how. My memory of last year stops there. Today, one year from that horrible day, I went to my drill team's version of a Bible study (called Encouragers). We spent most of our 30 minutes talking and reflecting about what had happened and how we were coping. We talked about how some things happen for a reason, but no one could see what the God's purpose for this was. But I saw one: September 11th helped me to become a more spiritual person and it made me realize how precious life really is.
