Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I would like to start by saying that my heart goes out to all the families of those who were lost. I can remember that day like it was ysterday, and it is now a year later. My thoughts and actions of that day flow through my head everyday. I am in high school, and that day, I was in third period, which goes from 8:30 A.M. to 10:10 A.M. This class happened to be Journalism for me. In that class, if we did not have the newspapers, we would turn on the TV to watch news. This turned out to be the worst day that we would watch the news. I can remember watching and then came this "Breaking News" sign that said an airplane had hit the WTC. About 5 or 10 minutes later, we watched the second plane hit. It was horrifying. The whole class now knew that the first one was no accident. Then, the Pentagon. Now, the first two, although horrifying, I could almost deal with because I don't know anyone in New York, but my dad works at the Pentagon, and I was freaking out now. The teachers recieved emails saying to not turn on their TV's, but since we already knew about it, we conviced our teacher to keep the TV on. At aroud 11 A.M., I ended up going home with my friend, against what the school wanted, but I just knew that I could not be there anymore. Guidance had been set up in our school auditorium, but there was nothing they could do with the phone lines the way they were. It was mass pandimonium, as everyone wanted to talk to their loved one. When I arrived home, we had a message from all of my family except my dad. I started freaking out, because that is the one message I wanted on my machine. I later found out that my dad was fine, and he was two sides away from the side that got hit eating breakfast in the cafeteria. He later told me that him and a few of his buddies were half-joking that they would be next, just a few minutes before they were evacuated after being hit. Most of my family are or were firefighters, so I have grown up around the firehouse, and know the sort of family that it is. I have also always had the respect for what they do everyday. This has only grown more since last Setemember 11. I also believe that firefighters are finally being recognized for what they have been doing day in and day out for a long time, a long time before September 11, 2001. I live with this as a part of my life everyday. When the people that are my age have kids, and their kidslearn about this day, it won't be the same as living through it. Nothing can unite anyone like that day did. This is my story and I hope that maybe some people can read this and better understand what happened that day through my eyes. God Bless the USA! I woke up as usual, took a shower and began my daily routine of rushing to school. I never listen to the radio because all they do is have talk shows in the morning and no station actually plays music. When I finally got to school that morning everything was still pretty ordinary. I remember my friend mentioning something about terrorist in New York but I didnt think she was talking about anything recent. I remebered hearing about a plane hijacking, and ransom put on the hostages a while back. I'm not really up to date on the latest news in the world. I have always chosen not to watch the news, not because it is boring, but because its depressing. The news these days only show how much our society is falling. When I first entered first period I noticed the TV was on but I figured it was just the stock market channel. When I heard that there was a plane that crashed into one of the towers I was shocked. I thought it was a horrible accident. When the second one hit I thought it was the strangest coincidence. Shortly after my Bio teacher gave us a little talk to try and help us understand what was going on. It was then that it hit me. For the first few minutes I was panicked. I thought we were in war and I visualized the violence you can only imagine in movies. Thinking about it now I can only say that I guess I was just naive. I didnt think that normal people like us were capable of such horrific acts. But they are, and the scariest part is that in their eyes there actions are righteuous and just. On that Tuesday my world started out all about myself but when this tragedy hit it gave me a new perspective on life and it broke my heart when I thought of all the people that were just going about their daily business, like me, when suddenly their lives or the lives of their loved ones were taken. I was the only person home, my mother was on vacation, my father was at work, and my brother was in college. I woke up to my radio playing. The morning DJ was saying something about a plane crash. I didn't think it was very important and my mind wasn't working it out because I had just woken up. As my mind became more clear I heard them say a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. My entire body snapped to attention. I jumped out of bed and turned on a TV as fast as possible. As the TV came on I could see one of the World Trade Center towers burning. I sat down, but less than 30 seconds later I was on my feet again in disbelief that another plane had just slammed into the other tower. I couldn't think but instinctively I went to the shower because I had to get ready for school. I did everything as quickly as possible so I could see as much TV coverage as possible before I left for school. When i got to school hardly anyone knew about it. The Principal came on the announcements to explain what had happened and to say that we weren't allowed to watch the coverage on TV. I was in band at the time and they made us turn off the TV, but unwilling to let that stop us we found another small TV, smuggled it into a practice room and watched more TV. We were all huddled around the TV when suddenly one of the Towers started to collapse. No one could move or say anything and not too long after the other one collapsed. Everyone sat there staring at the TV until the last possible second when we had to leave to get to the next class on time. I sat in geometry with my mind wandering. I coculdn't think of anything but the catastrophe. Despite the announcement every teacher let us watch the TV reports. For the rest of the day my mind ran over the scene of the plane crashing into the buildings and then them collapsing into a pile of rubble. Tell us your story: Once bearing witness to the September 11th attack, I was ordered to return back down to the location to provide backup support for the security officers who remained behind. I returned on the 15th, and continued working a around the clock shift until the thret was lifted, up until my being hospitalized on Febuary 15th, 2002. There was'nt any support from the security company that I worked for as well as the federal government, I am fully disabled and only attending school right now at John Jay in hope of some future employment later. I was driving in my car, and I remember thinking about what a shame it was that our country wasn't more patriotic. It seems to me that a lot of younger people don't have a respect for the flag or for those that have died for our country. I was wished there was something I could do to help boost patriotism and respect for our flag. I thought about sponsoring an essay contest, to get children to think about what our flag represents. It was a thought I had, then I went on with my day. The next day I awakened to my husband calling and telling me what had happened. I turned on the TV and short while later watched the second tower collapse. I could not believe that thousands of people were dying "in front of me". The previous day I never could have imagined that the following day there would be thousands of flags flying across our country and patriotism like I've never seen in my lifetime. It happened in the worst possible way, and I wasn't the one responsible for it, but my wish for a more patriotic and appreciative nation had come true. People said ?bye? to their love ones as routine without knowing that it was going to be the last one. I lived through this catastrophe close to Washington. My host mom and me were preparing my host dad?s birthday and listening to the radio. We heard the terrible news and turned on the television immediately. I could not believe my eyes. At first, I had a movie, a very well made Hollywood movie, in my mind. Then I realized that it was the reality. I got ? paralyzed?. I could not move from the television. I was just starring at the screen for hours and hours, but everything was blurred. My thoughts were somewhere else. I thought of my family and I was glad that they were not here. They were back in Europe out of harms way. I tried to make contact with them and let them know that I was all right, but the lines were busy. Few hours after the tragedy, I finally reached my relatives. They were worried about me, but at the same time they were relieved to know that I was fine. After the catastrophe my family was concerned about my staying in America. They would have liked me to be next to them. I convinced them successfully that I was secure from the terrorists. Although, it was a shocking experience, I have never felt that my life is in danger. I remember standing at the door, keys in hand and yelling to my two daughters that they were going to make us all late if they didn't hurry it along. I had just started my first year of teaching after taking time to stay home with my children. I had gotten a job teaching a first grade class, in the small rural area in which we live. The school was being remodeled and had no cable access at the time. When I first heard the rumor that a plane had hit the first tower, I was just saddened to hear a terrible accident had taken place. Not once in my mind did I even think it was on purpose! I started to cry for those that had been hurt in the accident, never even thinking just how many poor souls I would later cry for. When the second plane hit I remember finally thinking "OH MY GOD!" this isn?t an accident. I remember my principal coming down the hall saying that we were in "lock down" mode. This meant that no one would be leaving the building or entering without being checked out. Frantic parents running into the school to get their children, my other students being scared by just the look on the grownups faces, and the feeling of thankfulness that my daughters were safe and sound at work with me are the most I remember about that day. Later at home I finally watched the TV coverage and was both saddened and sickened by the destruction of that day. I cried for all those lost, for mothers not being about to kiss their babies again, for fathers never going home, but mostly for those children that would be forever changed. I never want to forget that day. When my girls are late and we need to rush I stop and think now, how lucky we are to just have normal everyday problems. I no longer take for granted the gifts I have been given. Life is a bit slower for me now, I take time to stop and enjoy the moment. I have a cousin that married a man from Europe, for years he has told me that we Americans were like ostriches with our heads in the sand about the evils around us and the way other countries view we Americans. I hope that they now see how strong and bonded we are now after September 11th. I heard the news on the radio but they had not yet known if a plane crashed into the world trade by accident or what happened. I don't think that TERRORISM was in the vocabulary of any of us. All I could do all day is pray for our people that no one was hurt or in the bldg at the time. When I finally got home from work I started to get a deep feeling of panick because I am a member of the United States Army Reserves and I have 4 children and a husband at home. Everyday that passes by I don't take for granted. I make sure that everyday that I am here I make every second count. My birthday is also on September 12, the day after and for the rest of my life as a yound mother I will always remember those we lost. I was to meet 1 of my sisters in Chadds Ford on the way. I stopped at a bank enroute to cash some bonds and I could hear something about a plane crash on their radio. When I asked, the teller said "yeah, 2 of them crashed into the Twin Towers in New York - a horrible accident." I instinctly knew that 2 planes crashing was no accident and said so. I became rather anxious. I just knew that we were under some sort of attack. As soon as I got in my car, I had no problem finding a station giving the details, sketchy as they were. By the time I arrived at the place where my sister was supposed to meet me, I was upset, fearful & mad. And, I had no intention of going anywhere near Philadelphia!! When my sister arrived, I told her what I knew and invited her to come home with me. I wanted to check on my 85 year old mother with whom I live. We went home and watched TV as the horror continued to unfold. We felt pretty helpless. I am retired from the U.S. Navy nuclear submarine force so, I have very strong feelings about my country. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I Pledge Allegiance... I don?t think any of my friends truly understood what the words in the Pledge of Allegiance mean. That is, not until what happened on September 11, 2001. The Pledge was just something we recited every morning in homeroom unless we were excused from it for personal or religious reasons. It had no effect on our lives, and no one really thought about patriotism. Sure, we all love America, and are glad to live here, but everyone took it for granted how well off we were, how sheltered we were from the rest of the world. On September 11, 2001, I woke up and went along with my usual routine. I showered, had breakfast, got dressed, and went to school. My friends and I talked before homeroom, listened to the morning announcements, and settled down for class. First period was perfectly normal-we took notes for a while, then talked about what we learned. When class was over, I told one of my best friends that I would see her after fifth period, and went to my second period class, Business Computer Applications. Our teacher, Mrs. Lamb, gave us a day to catch up on any work we were missing, and since me and my friends were done, we were talking to each other. At about 9:00 a.m., Mrs. Lamb got a call from a teacher in the next classroom. We all figured that it the teacher had a question about a student, so we didn?t pay any attention to the call. When she hung up the phone, Mrs. Lamb went to the TV and turned on CNN. We knew there was something wrong when we saw the look on our teacher?s face. CNN was showing the replay of a plane hitting the first World Trade Center tower. At first, everyone thought it was a joke. This couldn?t be happening to our country. It wasn?t real. It couldn?t be. America didn?t have to deal with these kinds of attacks. Then, the anchorman came on. He began talking about the estimated fatalities, and then began to cry on live TV. I think it was at that moment, when we saw that man, who never showed any emotion when reporting tragedies, cry, that we finally realized that this was not a joke. This wasn?t happening in a country halfway around the world. It was happening in New York City, only 7 hours, 420 miles, away. Our next thoughts were what would happen if the power plant in Niagara Falls was attacked. That was only 45 minutes away! A few minutes later, the bell for our next class rang. Walking down the hall, you could see the shock in everyone?s faces, the fear of what was to come. My next class was art. We were right in the middle of a new project, but no one was paying attention to that. We were all staring at the TV, watching the scenes of New York City, and waiting for any updates. There weren?t very many people in my fourth period study hall, maybe 12 at the most. We were all sitting together in a big group, talking and trying to comfort each other. My teacher left the room for a minute to talk to another teacher, and while he was gone, the second Tower was attacked. I remember watching and thinking that it was just another replay of the first attack. Then I noticed differences, like the camera angle, and the people moving around. This wasn?t the same attack. Later that day, we were watching as the Pentagon was attacked. All of my teachers decided to skip class that day except my French teacher. I remember my disbelief as she told us that French was more important. How could she say that? It was her country being attacked, too! My disbelief grew to anger as I began to believe that she didn?t care. Lately, however, I have began to see her actions differently. Maybe this was her way of dealing with this tragedy. Maybe, she thought if she didn?t watch it, it wasn?t happening. I?m not exactly sure what she was thinking, but there is no doubt in my mind that she was hurting as much as everyone else. I just couldn?t see it then. I didn?t lose anyone in these attacks, which is something I thank God for every day. Many other people did lose someone, though, and it is as though I can feel the pain just the same as they can. When I got home that day, I cried for everyone who died, everyone who lost someone, and everyone involved in these attacks. At first, I felt an unimaginable hatred for the people that committed this act. I realize now, however, that hating them would be wrong. It was their hatred for us that drove these people to give their lives and kill thousands of other innocent citizens. Some of my friends say that they have no faith in our government, and don?t believe that America is the wonderful place that it is. Sure we have problems, but there is no one place on Earth that is perfect. At least we have a place to call home in which we feel safe and protected. Even those people who say they are ?anti-American?: must have felt something the day that two of the symbols of America were destroyed. They suffered along with every other American, and they felt the despair and hopelessness that everyone else felt. Personally, I believe that America is a wonderful place to live. Even if you don?t think so, since these attacks, the words in the Pledge of Allegiance have taken on a new meaning. It is no longer something to say while you are half-asleep in the mornings. It expresses the pride we feel in our country, which is seen every time you drive down a street, and you see an American flag waving in the breeze, or every time you watch a fire truck or police car go by. When you wave to a police officer, and they salute to you. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: THE FOLLOWING ACCOUNT WAS WRITTEN BY SAM MYERS, JR. ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2001. My wife Jennifer and I live in Washington, DC. We are very shaken up and still pretty scared after the attack on America on Tuesday. It is hard to put into words what Tuesday was like. It was unbelievable, something like watching a very scary movie. I still find myself thinking it was a dream and when I realize it wasn't, I can barely hold back the tears. On Tuesday morning, I found out about the two planes hitting the towers and ran to the desk of a friend who had a cable accessed TV. After a large number of my coworkers and I had been standing in awe for twenty minutes or so, someone said, "look, the Pentagon has been hit." I then told him that someone was just reporting from the Pentagon and that is why the tag line read "the Pentagon." Then, to all our horrors, we realized that it had actually been hit. It felt as if World War III had begun. I started for a dead sprint to my desk to find out if Jen was OK. Horrific thoughts rushed into my head. I was thinking about all of the friends I have in Manhattan who might have been in or around the towers. I remembered the two years that I worked in the Pentagon, how I could have been there and how I might know people who could be dead. However, the worst was the possibility that Jenny might be hurt, or worse. I got to my desk and called home to make sure she was alright. Our house is about 10 blocks from the Pentagon, hence my terrible fear that something had happened to my wife. When she picked up the phone, I can't describe the relief I felt. Jen, with tears in her voice, told me that a very large jet had just flown so low to the house that it felt like an earthquake. As the house shook, she ran outside to find all of our neighbors looking to the sky and telling her that it was like you could reach out and touch the jet. The next thing she knew, the side of the Pentagon that faces our house was in flames and she was on the phone with me, both of us in tears. What happened next is something that I will never be able to forget, as long as I live. After confirming that Jen was OK, and talking to my father to assure him that we were OK (I couldn?t find mom to tell her), news reports began to flood in about the destruction around DC. Although in retrospect, we all know that nothing outside of the pentagon was destroyed, at the time no one had any knowledge other than what was being reported on the news. Due to the reports from the Radio, the TV Networks and the internet, I and my co-workers believed that not only had the two towers and the Pentagon been hit, but also the Capital building, the USA Today building, the State Department and that the White House had been evacuated because there was a Jet on the way to crash into it. As these reports came in, the phones at work went dead and our cell phones stopped working. Mass-hysteria is the only word I can find to describe what I could see around me at this point. Due to the fact that our office is two blocks from the White House and that we are located downtown, the next step was to immediately evacuate the building and head as far North as possible. My instinct was to go home to my wife, but the Pentagon is directly between downtown DC and our house. I could not get home! As horrible as this was, I knew Jenny was safe and I needed to get myself to a safe place as well. With military like execution, a friend began grabbing our co-workers and I ran to the parking deck below to get my truck pulled to street level immediately. I'm still not sure how I managed to avoid hitting any of the cars in the garage while exiting at 40 miles an hour. There, on the sidewalk outside our building, stood about fifteen people and my truck. We piled nine into my vehicle and commandeered another co-worker's car in which we placed 5 more. Within seconds we were flying up the streets of DC at speeds sometimes exceeding 60 miles an hour. As I stated before, it is easy now to look back and realize that none of the buildings other than the Pentagon were hit, but at the time we believed a much more terrible reality to be true. The sister of a friend and coworker lives in an area of North DC called Tinley Town. This was the location we were charging for. No red lights, alleyways, construction areas or traffic jams could stop us. We found the quickest way around each obstacle and headed north as fast as we could. No one is sure exactly how long it took us, but my best estimate is that we traveled 10 miles in about 15 minutes. On the rural highways of Virginia this is no great feat, but in Washington, DC, this is an accomplishment to say the least. Once at my friend Frank?s sister?s house, even though we had no way of communicating with anyone outside of each other, we found a strange comfort in the fact that we were together and as safe as one could get within the confounds of the city limit. Although we contemplated going further north, between the possibility of the inner-harbor of Baltimore and Annapolis Naval Base being hit, we calculated that we were safer in Jen Lupo?s house than in any other place we could drive. It was now around 12:30pm and news of the astonishing events was all over the news, on every channel. Within a few minutes, we realized that by using a calling card service, we could contact phone lines outside of DC. Being able to hear the voice of our significant others, our parents and our close friends was a comfort that brought tears of relief to our eyes. Although it still seemed that the world might be coming to an end, most of us had been able to speak to a few of the closest people in our lives, which made our situation much less dire. At this point, the television networks were finally getting a handle on what exactly had happened, which gave us some insight into the dangers around the city. Although the bombing of the Pentagon was an unspeakable horror, we were relieved to find out that it was the only attack in DC. Although this did not at all diminish the danger of being in DC and especially downtown, it was a sense of relief just the same. With this new information, very soon after the tears of relief came tears of rage and anger. Although we were all still frightened, the fear was countered by anger. We were now able to logically digest the actuality of what had happened to our land of freedom and home of bravery. This aggressive act of cowards angered me to a point I don?t think I have ever been. We realized there was not a thing we could do to change what had happened, but we sure as hell were not going to do what these faceless cowards assumed we would do. We were not going to sit on our buts and cry. We were not going to give into wallowing in our sorrow and hoping that we would stay alive. Rather, we decided to bathe in the fact that we were still alive and do just that, LIVE! We decided to pay tribute to our fallen Americans and not let our sorrows win. We were going to do the most logical and American thing we could think of?WE WERE GOING TO BAR-B-Q. With a strut of courage that no Hollywood movie has ever been able to produce, we walked on the streets of DC with our heads held high to the nearest grocery store and proceeded to purchase a feast seen by the face of only the luckiest of Bar-B-Q grills. Once back at the house, a celebration of life ensued. We thanked God that our family, our friends and we were alive and that we were together in a safe place. Obviously the tone was not one of the average backyard Bar-B-Q. It was our strange way of saying to whoever did these horrible acts, ?You have not won and you will never win. We will not yield to our fears and we will never yield to you nor your aggression!? We all were stricken with grief and fear that serrated our very souls, but we did our best to laugh in the face of our aggressors. Finally, around 6:00pm or so, although MD, DC and VA were still in a state of emergency, those of us who live in Virginia were not able to take waiting around anymore. Upon departure from Jen Lupo?s house, we were all still scared, but we had gained a strength for which I will forever be grateful to the all mighty God. When I finally made it home around 7:00pm, I hugged my wife so hard I almost hurt her. The world has not seemed the same since Tuesday morning and I know that it never will. Even now as I?m writing this, I?m holding back tears. I can?t seem to stop tearing up for every single thing I see on the news, hear from my friends and remember from the last 48 hours. I do however thank God for the fact that I am alive, my family is alive and the closest people in my life are alive. I pray to God that those unaccounted friends and colleagues in the Pentagon and in NY are safe. It does feel as though we woke up from our sleep to a nightmare. In fact, we did. A craving for Old Testament vengeance, a sorrow for all those lost and a fear for those who might be lost are all-consuming in my reality right now. However, the sun shall rise tomorrow. There are tears in my eyes and there are horrible memories that I will never forget. However, at the base of the pain is an uplifting chorus of Patriotic psalm, and it is getting louder. The psalm speaks words that are profound and true. It?s music is the essence of freedom, liberty and of what so proudly we hail. He was to fly back to NY on Tuesday morning 9/11. He woke me up and I saw the TV. I asked what movie he was watching. He told me that was live on the news. I really woke up and watched in horror as a place that I had taken out of town guests to crumbled in front of my eyes. The horror of it had not struck me yet. I had friends that worked there! I lost 4. Fortunately, the terrorists did not know that NY is a 9 - 5 town. If that had happened at 11AM, we would have lost many more souls. Tell us your story: THE EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11TH I was in 6th grade at McDougle Middle School.The principal had waited until the afternoon to go onto the Public Announcement System and tell us of the events that happend on that day. He did not tell us much. Instead, the teacher gave all the students letters to give to thei parents. He didn't want to create any problems. My teacher turned on the Television and we saw what was going on. One of my friend's father was in the building and asked to use my cell phone to check in on him. She was frantic. He turned out fine, he had been lucky and had gotten out in time. When I went home, all I remember is turning on the TV and seeing the haunting images of the Twin Towers. It looked horrible, I felt so bad for the people in the building. It was just a like a fireball in there. I was amazed that it had happend. It had seemed like it was a normal day. In a way it was a good thing, it united people all over America. It affected EVERYONE. You felt something. Horror or greif, or something else. No hate crimes or anything happend in my school. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2001: A MASACRE OF INNONCENCE 9-11. Usually, when this is herad, people thing of the emergency contact number. I think of destruction, annihilation, and nationalism. Nothing more horrible could have happened on the morning of September 11th, 2002. Nothing more careless could have been infested in the terrorists upson each plane. Nothing could have prepared America for the devastation that occurred within just four hours of that Tuesday morning. I remember sitting at my desk, my eyes still full of sleep and thinking about my plans for that day when the freshmen principle, Mr. Cassity, opened the door with a serious look on his face. he asked my English teacher, Mrs. Carner, to step out in the hallway for a moment. The class began wtih their daily gossip as we waited for Mrs. Carner to return. I was half asleep with my head on my desk when I heard the opening and soft, almost noiseless close of the door. I slowly opened my eyes and put my chin in my hands. She didn't say a word, but seemed overwhelmed and depressed. Everyone became dead silent when they looked at her. There was something wrong...something awful. I don't really remember her not telling us about it right away, but that's what everyone else says. I guess she just went on with class as normal without informing us of the devastation. I guess she thought we couldn't handle it. I guess. It all happened so quickly "Class, something terrible has happened htis morning. Mr. Cassity informed me that a plane has crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center." A long pause followed. No on speaking...we were barely even breathing. Of course this was an accident. It was a horrifying accident that shouldn't have happened. We continued with class not understanding what effects the following event of that day would bring. Mrs. Carner turned the television on for the last fifteen minutes of class and let us watch what was going on. The North Tower was in flamed and all you could hear was screaming and crying. Then it happened. On the right side of the screen, a plane flew towards the South Tower. It looked as if it was just flying by, but instead of seeing it go off the screen, I saw a huge explosion. At once, I knew this was no mishap. It was smoething more devious against the United States. As I looked at the faces around the room I knoticed that they all understood this, too. Tears formed in the eys that justm inutes before were almost asleep. A few minutes before the bell rang, another attack was accomplished. This time, a plane was directed into the Pentagon. What more could happen? Certainly there was a flying restriction and no more planes would crash and no more innocent lives would be taken. Ms. Cottrell took role in second block and turned the television on. We all sat quietly, with the exception of a few sniffles, as the news coverage continued. I kept repeating over and over, "How could this happen?" It was official that it was a terrorist attack, but the question of who still remained. At around 10:10, the South Tower collapsed into a cloud of dust and debris. It was then that a fourth plane crashed. Luckily, yet unfortunately, this plane did not hit a building, only a field in the small town of Somerset, Pennsylvania. Thirty minutes later, the North Tower was demolished from top to bottom. It looked like a banana being peeled. Before the towers buckled, there were things falling from windows. These things were people, and they weren't falling, they were jumping. My third class was Social Studies with Mr. Wilson so of course the news was on. He turned the volume down a little. He asked us to get a sheet of paper out and write down our feelings. I couldn't think of a place to start, so I just wrote down my thoughts as they were running through my mind. After this, he turned the volume back up, and during the coverage, we discussed what was going on. It had been announced that the suspect was a terrorist group led by Osama Bin Laden. A man who would become the most hated man in America. In Spanish class, I guess the teacher was still in denial because we continued with notes and started on projects. She did postpone the quiz that was to be that day, understanding that we wouldn't be able to concentrate. It was a break for me though. It gave me time to think about what was going on rather than having to see it. The first time my thoughts were somewhat clear and I could breathe. I rode the bus home that day. Normally, the little kids are screaming and everyone is talking, but it was silent. Eventhe kindergarteners seemed to know that something awful had happened. I slowly walked down the bus steps and took a deep breath outside. The bus drove off and I was left standing at the end of my driveway. Nature even seemed to understand. I couldn't hear a car driving in the neighborhood or a bird chirping. I looked around and felt blessed to be able to enjoy life. I walked up my driveway and to my front door. Unlocking the door, I stepped inside. No one else was home except me...alone, but alive. After the September 11th tragedies, I wrote many poems. This one is the first one... ALRIGHT Mommy please don't be scared Daddy don't worry I'll be alright Brother why are you shedding those tears? Sister you know I'll always be here. What could happen while I'm gone? Nothing will cause me any harm. Please don't cry, I'll come home. Don't you worry, nothing's wrong. I'll call you when I get there And I'll pray every night before bed. I will come back to you soon I will return before too long. Now I'm off and on this flight I hope everything will be alright I've never been away from home What's that they say on the speakerphone? There's terrorists on this plane I ride? Oh no, am I going to die? Please Lord, keep me safe from harm And let me stay so very calm Two planes hit the two tall buildings Neither of which could stay standing. Thousands of people were taken that day None of whom thought they'd die that way Though they might be gone and we cry As Americans we still stand with pride Yes we will mourn, but never forget That the flag still waves through all of this. Tell us your story: We had been visiting friends in Mapleston, MN and as we were getting ready to leave in our motor home, we heard the news of the crash in the first Tower. At that time, we had heard it was a military plane and it was an accident, and then before we could leave, the second Tower was hit. We knew then that it was no accident, but we did not realize the severity of it because we were on the road and we listened to the radio some, but we did not get the full impact until we had stopped for the night and called home to DeKalb, Texas. Our family told us to turn on the TV and we began to realize what had happened and here we were at least 800 miles from home, not knowing what would happen next. We had not seen any lines at the Gasoline Stations as we came through town, but we got in our Tow vehicle and went back into Rhineland and the lines were beginning to form so we got gas in our Blazer and went back and told the manager of the RV Park that we were heading toward Texas as long as we could get gasoline because we knew if gas was rationed, we would be low priority with the motor home and then, too, I just wanted to get home with my family. When we got back to the station to get gas in the RV, the lines were much longer and we heard that gasoline was 5.00 per gallon in Green Bay, WI, and 6.00 in St. Louis. We finally got to the pump and filled up and started driving toward Texas after we had driven all day East from Minnesota. The traffic was heavy at first, especially around towns where people were in line to get gasoline. About 10:00 PM, the traffic was gone and we seemed to be on the raod alone. We never did have any trouble getting gasoline and we drove all night and got into a roadside park outside of St. Louis at 8:00 AM the next morning and pulled off and closed up the RV and went to bed and slept a couple of hours and then went to Carthage, Missouri, and spent the night and got back to DeKalb, Texas on 13 September. It was a scary time but God was with us all through the night and there was never any fear, just not knowing what was going on. May God continue to bless America and keep her safe but we must make Him Lord of our Lives once again.
