Tell us your story: I was working as a reporter for a traffic information company (the people that do traffic on the radio stations) and of course had the radio and television on all day. What I remember most about that day is how it didn't at all seem real. Growing up watching disasters unfold on television and the movies, I geuss I had become conditioned to seeing hossible acts of violence and passing them of as entertainment. It was literally as if my eyes were not letting my brain and heart truly understand what they were seeing. With the practiced cool of radio reporting, I covered the early rush hour that evolved as downtown businesses called it a day at a round 11 in the morning. How far has radio news coverage fallen when they look to traffic reporters to cover major events, then simply switch over to live television feeds over the FM waves because they downsized their news departments ten years ago. As a journalist, this was perhaps the biggest story of my lifetime. And the fact that I was only involved on the very edges of reporting on it, I felt even more distanced. Perhaps this is selfish thinking, but it is how I felt at the time. In any event, I even travelled to the site of the disaster in downtown Manhattan a few months later with a friend, just to bear witness really, to see if I could finally comprehend the magnitude of what had happened. Again, it seemed unreal, like I was trying to peek onto a giant movie set or something. We walked around the barricades, craned our necks to see the huge pit of twisted rubble, read the messages written in the dust caked on nearby buildings, hung out on benches and in small parks, watching New Yorkers try to go about their daily lives as the worst disaster of their history became a tourist attraction. We ate sandwiches at a deli that was still trying to clear all the dust from the cracks and crevices in its window front. We went home the same day, feeling actually worse for having driven four hours to gawk. But it still didn't seem real. In the year since, the reality of the whole thing has slowly creeped in, but has manifested itself in the way I relate to friends and family mostly. Life is fragile, fleeting, and extinguished in an instant for the most obtuse and obscure reasons. This is what Sept. 11 has taught me. I came out of my bedroom and when I went to the kitchen my brother reported that the Twin Towers had been hit by a plane. I looked at him with that "yea, right" look and then turned to the tv where they were replaying the actual event. I had to sit down. We kept tabs on the events all day long. My niece kept trying to get word to her husband who is in the Marine Corps. He had been in the field with manuevers and all they told them was that the US had been hit. For the next week we didn't know when or if he was going overseas. He got back this last June. It was my day off so I poured a cup of coffee and climbed back into bed to watch the Today show. I was so relaxed and then the world came crashing in! At first it was reported as an accident and I remember thinking "that's terrible". I called my husband to tell him what had happened since I knew he wouldn't hear about it for a couple more hours. We were talking when the other tower was hit.. I saw it AS IT HAPPENED!!! It shook me up so badly I just started crying. Next the news showed the Pentagon had been hit. And then the worst happened, the towers began to fall. My God, the devastation!! I will NEVER forget the feeling, like someone had grabbed my heart in their hand and began to squeeze. It is a day I will remember for the rest of my life and every time I think about it I cry all over again. It has changed all of our lives more than I would have ever thought possible. Tell us your story: I was working in the accounting department -- doing dailies when a co-worker ran down the hall and shouted that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. My co-workers and I ran to the Lounge where both Televisions were on and people were gathering around. I said a quick prayer and was headed back to a quiet corner when someone screamed oh-my-God, another plane hit the other tower. Pandomonium broke out. As we were at an Airport property, many people in the room were getting ready to head back to New York and other parts north. Delta Airlines called the reservations and asked if they could have 100 rooms as all flights were cancelled and they had to put people up. Our reservations manager at the time, Mike Williams, agreed right away. There were others in Mgmt positions who wanted to benefit from this tragedy but we all stood behind Mike in trying to help. Needless to say, our lo by was swamped with people who were checking out and heard the news and decided to extend their stay and bus loads coming from the airport with distressed passengers. My supervisor asked me to work the front desk. Although, emotionally, I was a wreck and didn't know what was truly happening, I assumed the role of Front Desk Agent where I consoled and tried to brighten everyones day as I got them into their rooms where they could face thier grief and confusion either in solitude or join the multitudes in the lounge area. Yes, I was a scared but I also have tremendous Faith in God and know that He was still in charge. Hard as that is to believe, I know that "All things work together for the good..." So to this day, I have faith and remember and pray for those that didn't make it or for loved ones left behind. God Bless America and all that dwell here! Robin as you know from talking to him has canceled his trip to Amsterdam. I have heard of fear of flying but this takes it to an all time level. Robin wouldn't want to take the chance to fly or be separated from us just in case it gets worse here and there was any possibility it could directly affect us. It is so hard to grasp that it is real it seems like a made for TV movie that would show the mother and child getting on the plane that gets high jacked, then flash to the politicians in Washington, then to someone working at the World Trade Center, then to some stupid news commentator saying can we pin down exactly where the President is so we can broadcast it and tell our enemies! Here in Florida Disney World and I think all the attractions are shut down. Ann's daughter works by the port and they are taking all of the tankers out to sea because they don't want our ports damaged and we have all of our gas and oil stored there in huge tanks. They have evacuated all government buildings and all tall buildings. Our public schools are open but some private schools closed. My sister Dawn called and she had been teaching a class and they left the televisions on after the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center and they watched the second plane crash into the other tower live. The newscasters on Fox and CNN didn't seem to have the feeling that some newscasters have that conveys the somber tone. Where is Walter Cronkite when we need him. The first tear that I shed was when President Bush came on TV and spoke about it and asked us to pray for them, this conveyed the depth of the tragedy and brought it home. I have heard that over 200 fire fighter and emergency personal were in the towers when it went down. I can't imagine the courage it would take to enter a damaged burning building not sure if there were bombs set to go off or if the building would collapse like it did. We are getting bomb threats in Florida that I'm sure are people jumping on the band wagon to make a few phone calls and hear about it on TV. I don't know what is happening to all the people in the airports that had their flights canceled who are finishing a business trip or were between planes. The people with good credit cards have no problem but there are lots of people who don't have the extra money. I would love to go and help some stranded family and take them in except I have a stranded husband in Delray I took my car in to have it fixed and its not ready so I have to pick him up at work. I also have to go to the retirement home and visit my brother Terry, I'm sure he is as upset as the rest of us but he doesn't have people to call to share with during this tragedy. Everyone is going home to put up their flags I may have to go and buy one and put up. This unfortunately is a date that we will remember and Desiree's children will have to read about in their history books. I work in forensic mental health and was talking to a friend/co-worker ,on the phone, who was at work. We work on residential buildings that have televisions and my friend/co-worker told me to turn on my television set because something was going on. My friends name is Judy and Judy couldn't see the television from where she was talking to me on the phone. I turned on the television set and saw the live taping of the first plane that had hit the first tower. Then the live coverage switched to the Pentagon and I realized at that time that this was a terrorist attack upon the country. I called Judy back at work and told her that it was bad, REAL BAD, and that the Pentagon had been hit and breached by an airplane. She said that she was going back to watch the television on the building to keep track herself and I hung-up from talking with her. Then the coverage was back at the World Trade Center and I saw the second plane hit the second tower. I was already upset and I began crying then. I called a Christian friend of mine and we began praying for the country and the victims of this terrible, horrendous act. I cried and prayed all day because I knew that this country; that was founded by a majority of men who were believers; was now in the beginning of a terrible time in its' history. I hope and pray that this supposed democracy that we live in, in this country, will wake up and reclaim what the God of Abraham,Isaac, and Jacob gave to our founding forefathers and reclaim this nation as a God-Fearing, Christ believing nation. The majority of the people in this country say that they are Christian or Jewish and they all believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I thought that in a democracy that the majority rules. We have lost track of that over the years and I believe that these terrorist attacks that have been so heinous are a wake-up call to the factual majority of people in this country. I hope that the people will wake-up. May God have mercy on us all and grant my, and other believers prayers. Time to wake-up America! Quit letting greed, lust,and moral decline run our country. My principal came to my classroom and told me that two pilots had crashed into the World Trade Centers. It took me a few seconds to process, but my new husband (we had just gotten married in July) had left for a business trip that morning to NYC. His plane was due to arrive in NYC at about 8:30 am. Sick with worry and the unknown, I went to the nearest phone and checked my cell phone voice mail. Thankfully, there was a message from my husband telling me he was okay and that he would call me later. Not realizing the full spectrum of what was truly happening (like many people, I thought maybe they were small Cessna-like planes), I went to our school Media Center where there is a TV. What I saw will never ever be forgotten. The sight of the towers burning and the faces of the people in the streets is something that I don't think any American will ever forget. It was horrible being in my classroom, without radio or a TV, not knowing what was going on. Shortly thereafter, more grief for our country set in as the Towers collapsed. Even though I had gotten the message from my husband, I was still terribly worried since I knew he was in NY but I didn't know exactly where and how long it would be before he got home. One of the worst parts of the day was trying to initially hide worry and fear from my students. I had to pretend that nothing happened in order not to scare them. In the early part of the afternoon, I had everyone sit on the rug in our room and I told them in simple terms what happened. They had so many questions that I wanted to answer for them, but didn't know the answers myself. We must have sat together for an hour talking about what happened. I realized later that day that no matter how old they are, whenever anyone asks them if they remember what they were doing when they learned of September 11th, they will remember their 3rd grade teacher telling them about it. That is one memory I wish I didn't have to be a part of. Fortunately, my husband made it out of NYC safely and ended up driving back home that night. Since he was in the car the whole day, I knew he didn't know the magnitude of what had happened. We sat together, watched TV and cried and thanked God that we had each other, while others weren't so fortunate. Tell us your story: While watching the Today Show,an announcement was made that a plane had hit the World Trade Center.Seconds later a man was on the phone to the host, stating that a large plane had hit.I raced to the phone to call my daughter-in-law to ask if my son Steve,was at work.She said no, that he was just outside talking.I told her "Thank God,he was home because a plane had just gone in to the WTC".She yelled out the door and told him and his two friends what I had just told her.You see,my son Steve is a NYC firefighter and I had remembered what he had said in 1993 when they blew up the underground of the WTC and he had been home and was not part of that rescue. Minutes later my daughter-in-law was in my home crying that Steve and his firefighter friends had jumped in the pickup and was headed into the city.I tried to console her even though I knew this was going to be a bad one.The television now showed the second plane going into the south tower.I fell to my knees to pray for the safe return of my son and all those in that horrible situation.It wasnt until seven hours later that we knew Steve was ok.He was originally sent to the command center and then at the last minute was sent elswhere.Because of that last minute decision his life was saved.His firehouse lost eleven members.May there never be another unholy event as was on that September day in 2001. Tell us your story: I was working in a truck stop at 6 am the morning of september 11 2001 helping customers as I normally would until a truckdriver came in and told us to turn on the news and that something had happened so we turned on the tv and there it was the unforgetable sight of the first tower in a smokey cloud and news people gasping in disbeliefe. I watched and continued on knowing that I couldn't stop and let it get to me then but when I saw the 2nd tower hit by a plane I started to cry. The feeling of shock and emptyness was overwelming. Everyone in the place was shaken up over it and glued to the tv for hours and for the days after people wuld talk about it. I came home that day and got a hold of a friend that was in the Marine Corp. and went to see him I needed to feel safe and that nothing would hurt me but to my surprize I couldn't get on base due to the tragady. I called to talk once I got back home and then called my mom and dad hoping that they could help me deal with what had happened. I decided that I was needed and went to my local blood bank and donated I waited in line for 8 hours just to get in the door and another 3 just to get a chair but that was all I could do I wanted to do more I wanted to go to NY and help in anyother way I could. Weeks later I was in formed that 2 guys that I went to collage here with had graduated and moved to NY and became firefighters and they both didn't make it out alive. Our community was stricken with greife with that news. We all did what we could and wanted to do more but from here in California it was hard so we pulled together and gave the gift of life and that went on for weeks to come. Today September 11 2002 was a day of pain and anger as it was a year agoI cryed off and on all day while working and again the only thing that people could talk about was last year not what had changed during the year. I woke up to my alarm going off at 6:00 in the morning, informing me that it was time to get ready for school. Therefore, I got up and got ready to start another day at school. When I arrived at school, I did my usual routine; went upstairs to the Broadcasting room and then when the bell rang for students to enter the halls I followed, ending up at my locker. Just to let you know I was a sophomore when this all happened. I started my day off in English with Mrs. McWilliams at 7:39 in the morning. By this time, nothing seemed different or at least I did not notice. It was only time until the catastrophe would unfold right in front of my eyes, and I could do nothing to prevent it. The bell rang at 8:20 ending first period and I had five minutes to get to my second period class. During second period, I think I had gym, I am not sure. All I know is that I did not have study hall because I am sure I would have been informed of the first plane, which hit the North Tower at 8:46. Therefore, I went through second period without having a clue about anything. Since I was in my schools Broadcasting program, I was able to leave my second period class early because we put on a show during homeroom (which was between second and third period). As I walked through the empty halls, it was only minutes before I would find about the worse attack on US soil. When I got to the Broadcast studio, everyone?s eyes were fixated on the television. That is when I was informed that two planes had hit the World Trade Center buildings. I had not seen either plane hit the towers. As I watched the TV screen I had no idea of what was going on. Who did this? Are they sure, they were terrorist? There were people mad at us? Where was the President while all of this was happening, Florida? I was clueless; I had nothing to say. What could you say? People had taken our planes, our planes and deliberately crashed them into our buildings. In addition, I was only 15 years old, I new nobody in New York, so I was not as worried as my friends were at first. However, once I collected my thoughts all I wanted to do was cry, I wanted to go home. I live right near a power plant (about 3 minutes away) so I was scared to death that a plane would crash into the Power Plant. I had not said goodbye to my sisters that morning, I mean three of my sisters had moved out by then, but what if I died. That whole day everyone was on high alert. Once the day went on and WE learned about the planes that crashed into the Pentagon and the one that was taken over by the unarmed passengers, which crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, it became real. TERRORIST! Our school never went on lock down, or our faculty members forgot to tell us. There were no afternoon activities, they had all been cancelled so that we could go home and stay with our families. When I got home, I distinctly remember my mother sitting in her recliner crying. I asked her why she was crying and she said that she was afraid because of the power plant. So for the rest of the day, every television in our house was tuned to some sort of news broadcast. After awhile, I could not take it anymore; I had the exact same images playing over and over again in my head. So, I ended up watching movies for the rest of the night. That day had not sunk in. The thing I do remember was that I knew just because something like this happened to us, God was still with us. I also remember everyone coming together. After 9/11, I could never listen to the ?Star Spangled Banner? the same again, every time I hear it I get Goosebumps. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had left for work about 7:30 a.m. to take the Burlington Northern train to downtown Chicago. As I arrived in Union Station, I saw many, many, many people standing around two television sets on the upper level of the station. I asked what was going on -- I was in total shock, but still didn't really understand what was happening until I arrived at work at 9:00 a.m. My Firm had an office on one of the floor's of the WTC building. We lost one employee, but possibly two -- no one is talking about the loss of another employee that was an attorney. At 10:00 a.m. we were told to leave the building immediately because rumors had it that another plane was out there, but no one knew exactly where. The Sears Tower is about nine blocks away, and consequently, I had to pass it to take the train back home. It was total chaos in the downtown area. Were we going to be next? That question still haunts us every day of our lives as so many people work in the downtown area. My life will never, never be the same. I was always reluctant to fly, but did so anyway because I love Florida. Next year I'm planning a trip to Tampa, but hopefully, I will decide that I shouldn't be afraid because what happens will happen anyway. Life is short enough you can't live your life in fear. Let me begin to say, I am a wife to an EMT/FIREFIGHTER with the Metro Nashville Fire Dept... and I am a mother to a Metro Nashville Police Officer.......and a mother to a soon to be 17 year old that is studying to be a EMS/ EMT / Paramedic Trauma Nurse with Lifeflight with Vanderbilt University. I spent over 28 years in the Healthcare field myself until a drunk driver caused my accident. Being a wife, and a mother with having TWO ACTIVE Public Service Trained EMT/ Paramedic / Firefighter and a Police Officer with the third studying in the simliar fields.... I am PROUD OF THEM. The other part of this story is this.... I have a cousin , Brian Green , living for many years in New York due to his job and he works near the Trade Center. But, it was so frantic at our homes here in Tennessee when we were calling Brian to find out where he was on Sept. 11th, 2001. My uncle tried his workplace, he was not there...tried his home, no answer only an answering machine. Brian is the one that never missed days in school, nor on the job he is a High Achiever. But, on Sept. 11th, 2001.... Brian awoke that am early with a fever, and did not feel well. He called in to his office and said he would be running late that morning, as he needed to see if he could reduce the fever. He went back to bed and fell in a much needed sleep. He awoke about two hours later, and called his office again, and said maybe another hour or more then he'd be in. When he awoke the third time, he turned on his TV, and he was in total shock of what he was seeing as we all were all over the world. The Attack on the USA ! As a wife to a Firefighter, and a mother to a Police Officer, I knew that with each shift they go on duty, you can never know, but only pray for their safety, as they are well trained, and this is the career they've chosen. But, it took the family two days to hear from Brian, and with the telephone lines down, or so much traffic calls coming into the state of New York that Sept. 11th.... we were unable to reach Brian. Finally, into the third day......my uncle received a telephone call from Brian saying he had been ill and slept in to get to feeling better, he did not want to go into work with that fever to give to his co-workers....but like the entire USA, he was shaking in trembling tears to say that if he had not been ill that morning, he could have very well been there and there is no doubt that he would have died along with many of friends he had worked with. It is extremely ironic, that this is the first day that Brian did not go into work.... We all had prayed for his safety. Our prayers were heard. Yesterday, my Firefighter husband, Marvin H. Lanham, Jr. was on duty at Engine # 36 in Old Hickory, TN and they had many ceremonies and tears shed September 11th, 2002 ! Yesterday, my Police Officer son, Charles Thomas Widener, was on duty at the Hermitage District and they too had prayers and a ceremony in honor of those that died September 11th, 2001........ all were in tears. My daughter in law, and I , shared in those tears not only on Sept. 11th, 2001 but week to week, month to month, in wondering " Could this happen here in Nashville, TN; at our International Airport, anywhere here........and would we have to face what the many wives, husbands, daughters, son's, mother's, father's, and their families in New York , PA, Washington DC ......dealt with on that September 11th, of 2001 ! " We pray for those family members daily ; and they are never far from my heart ! And, why was is it that Brian Green fell sick on that September 11th, 2001, when he went through grade school and High school and his workplace so attentive to his work and being on the job and to excel.......We do thank God for his safety for that day. I do thank God for the work my husband and son do which the pay is not where throughout our country where it needs to be, as Public Service Agent's to protect the people of our city...but it a career they have chosen to aid, to protect, to defend the people here not only in Nashville, TN, but too in the USA, if they are called to help ! I was at work on that day working on a sales tax project when the guys from the shop came into the office and told us to come into the GM's office and look at the tv. At first, I thought it was a much smaller plane involved and that someone may have had too much alcohol and ran into the building. I felt panic and rage all at once when I realized what I was looking at. Everyone was so quiet, as we watched with wide-eyes and open mouths. Eventually, still in shock, we all went back to our jobs, more as a therapy than anything I think. Desperately trying to grasp reality after seeing something so unreal. Then that afternoon, there was the gasoline price gauging. Gas prices soared to over $5.00 per gallon at some places! Fortunately, I had filled my tank that morning so I was ok. It was my mom who informed me, .....she sounded uneasy, a fear through her voice, and she said there are terroists attacking us. Not really comprehending what she was talking about, she said, "well, not here...they're in New York, they just hit the World Trade Center..the attacks are coming like every 10 minutes". At hearing that I turned on the television to understand. I was glued to it, all the thoughts that run around your mind in times of fear, your life, all the lives you love. I debated on whether or not to pick my daughter up early from school, as I usually picked her up at lunch. I decided to just watch the events and keep informed. Listening to the radio updates as I drove to get her. I remember the drive, 15 minutes seemed like it took forever. I just wanted to be with her. People were swerving off the roads, all the moms rushing to pick up their kids, the panic was evident. When I reached the school, there were police cars outside, and I froze....shaking as I walked up, only to realize they were guarding the doors. When my daughter and I walked back outside, seeing the police, she said, "somebody did something bad." I said yes, they did. We were supposed to go to the park, and have lunch together, I was trying to think of what to tell her ... why we couldn't go. I needed to be home with her.....that security you feel there, when things in the world become unbearable. "There are some bad people out there, doing some bad things", I said. A co-worker came in a few minutes late and said she had heard the World Trade Centers had been hit and there was now a fire at the Pentagon. Tell us your story: On Sept 11th 2001 I was on the 14th floor of our building for a DSL company, getting orders ready to pass out to my employees so they could get the days business started. My husband called me and told me to find a radio and turn it on, and that something has happened to the World Trade Center. At first I was confused that thought that something was going on in Downtown Dallas, since we have a company called that but I then realized when listening to the radio that it was not here where I lived but in New York City. Needless to say, everyone in our building that day did not get much work done, we had prayers outside our building and just spent time together calling our friends and family. It was a very sad day indeed that I will never forget. I remembered back to Dec 1999 when my husband had a business trip to New Jersey and I was able to join him. We took one of their cruises and took pictures of that Statue of Liberty, the World Trade Center etc.. I cherish those pictures and I cherish the people of New York.. Your strength is amazing and I'm proud to be in the same country as you.
