Being a women of a certain age my first thought was that a plane had hit the building trying to land, much as one had hit the Empire State building many years ago. When I got to my job, I watched as the second plane hit. At first I thought it was a repeat of the inital crash. When to my horror, I realized that it was indeed a second plane, I knew that we were under attack. Since I had family living and working close to the area, I was frantically trying to reach them. I finally got through to one of my daughters in New Jersey and she contacted one of my nieces who was acting as central command so to speak, and was told that while the rest of my family was scattered throughout the New York area, all were alive. All I remember feeling, other than extreme anger and emotional pain. was a deep desire to "Go Home". No matter where I might reside at any given time, New York is and will be my home. I flew back as soon as I was able and when I hit the city, felt an almost physical pain. I do know that New Yorkers, indeed, Americans, might sometimes be down, but NEVER, NEVER, will they be out. Friends that were lost, heroes that gave the supreme sacrifice, will be remembered much as those who lost their lives at Pearl Hsrbour will be. I have always had tremendous respect for police & firemen. If nothing else comes of this, perhaps now people will realize the great bravery and care these men show every day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I arrived at work early as usual. My tour didn't start until 9:00am, but I always got to work at least two hours early. My goal was to complete whatever work the Executive Director had left the night before then go over to the World Trade Center 18th floor, and deliver more information to the EEO worker who I had been working with on my case. I stopped to talk a couple of times as other workers arrived at work so that delayed me a bit. When the first plane hit I felt the building shake I heard someone scream, then someone else yelled "the World Trade building just blew up." We went running to one of the offices where you could view the building clear. I just looked at it in amazement. I could'nt belive what I was seeing. Another worker walked in she said that it wasn't a bomb it was a plane. We all stood their talking about the plane making a error in judgement and hitting the building, but then the unspeakable happened the second plane came and we watched as it hit the second building. I could'nt believe this was happening I turned to someone and said "I was suppose to be there right now", and as soon as I said that a women jumped out the window of the World Trade, but I could'nt see a face her black dress or skirt made a paracute and it seemed like slow motion descending her to the ground. I just bust out crying to her to "fly to heaven my daughter will help you once you get their" I could'nt move I was so upset someone grabbed my arm and told me we had to leave. I called my mother who was at home and told her not to go out and vote to please stay in the house, then I called my sister (my twin who is my life) to turn back around if she wasn't to far and go back home, but I got her voice mail. I finally gathered my composure and I ran around the office to make sure everyone was out on my side then we all ran down the steps. We stayed until about 3:00pm watching people jump to there deaths, then the buildings fell. I decided to leave my home early inorder to enjoy my ride to work, execept, there were accidents EVERYWHERE. even the traffics reports couldnt understand why. I had the radio on 104.3 when Bob Buckman reported that "there seems to be a fire or something at the twin towers," it was 8:47 am."If anyone is near a Tv" he continued,you might want to put it on". He then put on a Pink Floyd song, but i turned the radio of, because I was so aggravated by the traffic. when I arrrived, FINNALY, after an hour and a half, usually, a 35min drive, I decided to work only a half day. the 2nd plane hadnt hit yet, and i called my mother and told her to turn on the TV, that a plane had hit the world trade center. then i heard her screaming, "OH MY GOD!!", she saw the 2nd pane hit" i told her i would be home as soon as possible, it was obviously not an sccident. when the pentagon was hit, my builing in a county builing we were all evacuated. it was the most horrible day that i ever want to know. the images are forever in my head. I live in Tarrytown, and we were able to see the smoke from the hudon river banks, down the hill from my house, the view provided the entire skyline. many people had gathered there with radios we had witnessed the buildings collapeing on TV and turned it off. it was horrible. the view of the smoke was white, then black, then gray... eeryone was in shock and afraid. we contacted the red cross to see how we could help and donated 6 gallons of water and other food items immediatly. I distinctly remember that we were entering the computer lab with some kindergarten children when I first heard what happened. It was very hard to go about my job that day because I wanted to watch the television all day. But my co-workers and all the teachers rallied together and kept our grief and fear to ourselves so the children would enjoy a normal day at school. It is certainly a day that I will never forget. An assistant teacher walked from the parking lot into our classroom and told my teacher to turn on the TV because the Twin Towers and the Pentagon had been hit . When my band director turned on the TV, we all saw images of the towers burning. Right after, The assistant principle at the time came on the announcements. I disctinctly remeber her telling us that in the word "American", the last 4 letters spell out "I CAN" and she told us that we can all get through it together. None of my parents or family members work at the Pentagon or anything, so I was releaved, but it was horrible seeing some my classmates and friends crying and calling their parents to see if they were okay. Living in Northern VA, right near DC, many kids around here have parents that are in the military or work at the Pentagon. I even had some friend's parents who were suppose to go to their office on 9/11 but had a meeting that was canceled last minute or became sick. Half the kids at school were taken out because their parents came home to pick them up, for precautions. I just never imagined something like this would have ever happened in my lifetime. I always read about things such as war, and terrorism happen in other parts of the world, or they happened many many years ago, but I never thought it would happen in my lifetime. I also remember distinctly seeing many jet planes flying in the sky that day. one after another, there would be white strikes in the sky. I remember this because my friend and I were on our tranpoline singing "Leaving on a jet plane" by Chantal Kreviazuk. It's weird looking back now. It happened 5 years ago, but i can still distinctly remember the day our nation became stronger, and not broken. Tell us your story: I had just arrived at work at 9:00 a.m. and had gone online to get my e-mails when the picture of the WTC showed up on the screen and it was on fire. I went to one of my co-workers and asked him if he knew what was going on and he said no, so I went downstairs where I had a T.V. and brought it upstairs to my office. Just as the T.V. was warming up I saw the pictures of the second plane hitting the WTC. I called my co-worker, Bud, and asked him to come down front to watch with me, we were SHOCKED. I couldn't take my eyes off the T.V. and I couldn't believe what I was seeing, especially when the WTC came crashing down to the ground. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11th started pretty "normal" for me, I work for a group of doctors and as usual I am totally stressed out by 9AM. I ran to the bank and when I returned, my coworker said that a plane hit the trade center in NYC. My first natural reaction was that of irritation at what or who I don't even really know; at first the pilot, then the plane, I don't know! We turned on the TV and were absolutely astonished at what we saw, we could not even speak, and then the second plane hit, we were totally mortified at what was unfolding. I think I was in shock and it took me a good two days to cry about this terribled terrorist attack. It wasn't until I saw families on TV searching for there fathers, there mothers, husbands and wives that this became a real for me and pulled me out of my state of shock. Even now I cry. I feel ashamed at my first feeling of irritation, that I could get so wrapped up in my little world and my small small problems that I failed to have the "Human Connection" right away. I greive everyday over this tragedy and I think of this everyday so that I will never lose what I have gained from this - human compassion, suffering for others and the deeper connection that I have with my loved ones. I stated I had not heard and proceeded to go to my office and turn on my computer, because my thoughts were that some small plane had just scraped the side of the building. When I went into our break room to get coffee about 5 minutes later, I was in complete shock and dismay as I saw on TV what had really happened. I began to cry, and one of my co-workers asked if I had friends or family there. I thought her question was strange because of what had happened, but I realized later that the full impact of what had happened had not hit her yet.We all went home early, and I called friends, relatives, watched TV, and cried off and on. I woke up, showered, and drove a mile to downtown Albany into my office in the New York State Museum, the Cultural Education Center. I parked my car and ventured to the tenth floor of the building giving my usual morning cheers to Tom the parking attendant, to two women exiting their cars, to my regular coffee vendor, and to the security guard who greeted me everyday. I walked inside with many people who also seemed happy to begin their day. We all walked with the usual morning pace, the typical brisk sprint to work; for some a bounce, or with a swing of the brief case or purse. I came into my office and thought it was strange that no one was here and the radio was on. I puttered around some and started my hotpot and got ready for my daily cup of tea. I fired up my computer. It was 9:45 a.m. I opened my e-mail and saw an unusual ?high priority? message from the Commissioner of the State Department of Education. ** High Priority ** This morning, unidentified persons highjacked two aircraft in Boston and then flew one plane into each tower of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. There are huge multi-story holes in one tower and smoke is billowing out. One of the towers has now collapsed and another plane crashed into the helipad outside the Pentagon in Washington. Transportation routes have been sealed off. The FBI and City emergency crews are on the scene. It appears that many people are trapped on the upper floors of the building. The State Emergency Management Office Operations Center has been activated. The State Education Department no longer has any employees that work in the World Trade Center, but our hearts go out to those that perished and to their families. All State Education Department staff in New York City may go home if they wish unless otherwise instructed by local authorities. If you do leave your work locations please be very careful as normal transportation routes and means may not be available and people some people may panic. All other staff, outside New York City, should continue normal business. I know that it will be very difficult to focus on other things, but it will not do any good for anyone to panic. This is a terrible day for our country, but we need to carry on in the face of this adversity. Richard (Cate) Stunned, I looked out my window only to see the Corning Tower in my view. The Tower resembles the Trade Center. I immediately became concerned for my longtime friend, Sean Keegan, who worked in the vicinity of the World Trade Center. I quickly e-mailed him wondering if he was dead. Seconds later, my friend John Bach called to tell me his cousin was in tower two and had phone his family but was suddenly ?cut off.? We talked about Sean. Unable to continue ?normal business? and hearing the faint but loud urgent whines of a male radio broadcaster, I buckled. I remember staring and tears crawling down my face. I looked out another window only to see the school where my friend?s mother worked. I wondered if she knew her son might be dead. I packed my things and tried to figure out how to translate my numb feelings into some positive energy. I visited my friend?s mother who was unaware of the magnitude of the event. I left her after hearing Sean was alive. My other friend's cousin died. While it is unlikely I will forget the events and how they unfolded in my life, I always will recall what happened when I left the State Museum. When I got outside the building I saw hundreds of people in the streets exiting the Empire State Plaza offices. Like myself, people were making the exodus home. No one talked. No one said hello. Everyone was looking, but they really were staring and walking a somber pace down the Madison Avenue hill. No one was looking up; some were weeping. They had no bounce in their walk, no greetings of hello, and no words of kindness. Although hundreds of people were on the sidewalks, it was almost totally quite and peaceful. All you heard were shoes clapping the cement and whispers and sniffles. As we all walked away, you could have heard church bells ring, one at a time, slow, slow, slow. The only thing was, no bells were ringing at all but you could hear them in the mood and the pace of the people. Unlike a typical car ride home no car horns beeped. I never heard a siren and people were kind in driving. It was quiet, and somber, and slow. It was nearly 11 a.m. Finally I heard a noise ? someone yelled. As I traveled home on North Manning Boulevard, residents had tied American flags throughout the trees and were shouting, ?U.S.A.! U.S.A! U.S.A!? to the cars that passed. I went to go check and there I saw a plane hit the twin towers. I really didn?t know what the twin towers were until later I felt that why? Why did this have to happen? I remember seeing some people getting out and some people jumping out of the towers. Most of the people weren?t able to get out because of the fire. People have suffered from burns and were dead. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was working as a server at the time and had just worked two weeks straight without a day off. September 11th was my first day off and I was ready to sleep in. I was sleeping heavily when my boyfriend came in to wake me up. He told me that a plane had run into a building. In my sleepiness I envisioned a small sight-seeing plane hitting a small building somewhere unimportant. I told him to leave me alone and I went back to sleep. A few hours later when I woke up I walked downstairs and saw my boyfriend, our roommate and a few of our closest friends huddled around the television. I was like, "what the heck is everyone watching?" When I turned my eyes to see I could not believe it. We all sat there in absolute disbelief. We had so many questions and we were all afraid. We sat glued to the television the entire day. No one dared to move. I think we all cried and we all called our loved ones just to hear their voices. I will never forget how close we all felt to each other that day. The sadness was crippling but the love that rose out of the ashes of that tragedy will be with me forever. Don't ever forget! I turned on the TV and I was shocked, I cried for days. I couldn't turn off the TV. I felted all of the pain that everyone there was going through. I prayed for them to find as many people alive as they could. As the days passed I started to pray that they find anyone they could alive or dead so there family's would know. I was sicken to hear that the terrorist when they found out the damaged they did they were all dancing in the streets, how dare they. Not even one of them felted ashamed or sorry for what they have done to us. A year later, they must think they have gotten away from doing this deed. But I am not worried, that God will judge them and they will be punished for that they have done to us. I am very proud to be an American. After waiting an entire 2 weeks I, along with hundreds of other recruits was to begin my Army career. {our training had been somewhat delayed due to lack of drill sgts. at the time.} The days prior to the 11th we had been practicing a ceremony in which we would meet and greet our new drill sgts. and swear into basic training. Yes, I was excited I was to begin my army career. The day began as best it could for a day in trainig, early chow, roll call, room check, ect.. At around 8am, my unit marched to the area where the ceremony would take place, and took our places. We sang the army song, repeated army core values and stood at parade rest as several recruits marched around in military uniforms from past wars. Each of us unaware what was taking place in our homeland. The ceremony went well and we marched back to our companies, excited, nervous, and Proud!!!. We stood in line waiting {you do that often in the military.} A drill sgt. approached us and in a stern serious voice informed us that OUR nation had just been attacked by terrorists. At the time we took it for granted that it was just a scare tactic to get us prepared for the next 9 weeks, but as the day went by, and we were instructed to contact our families if they lived in NYC. We began to realize this was not just a Drill's idea of a joke, but a sick, sad reality. I can't explain the sickness that over came each of us, we had just sworn to protect the freedom of our fellow americans agianst all odds, and suddenly this. We were aware of the possibility, but this soon? I called my family on the pay phone, they tried to describe what had happened, and what the news was showing everyone, but it all seemed to unreal. The world was falling apart and I was 500 miles away from my southeastern Ky. home? My family was together and I was here alone, unsure of where I may end up. Later that evening one of the drill sgts. decided to let us catch a few minutes of news coverage. 10 soldiers at a time walked into that room, each of us walked out changed, tears were in the eyes of those who seemed had no heart, and for the first time we began to feel like family. Each of us alone, a scared, only one another to turn too. For next few days life seemed a dream. We were updated on the attack whenever there was something new to tell. On the following tuesday we held a ceremony outside of our unit, military personnel, civilians and trainees alike joined together to salute those who had died, as we listened to the silence we could hear the sadness in the wind, smell it in the air feel it in the coldness of a Sept sun. I spent nights fighting to sleep only to be awaken by dreams of bombs and attacks, even though I only seen 2 minutes of live footage. I knew now more than ever that I had made the right choice by joining the military. I was always proud to be an american, but now I was proud to serve america, the people who died in the Sept 11 tragedy, and those who lost their loved ones are the real heros. Her voice was trembling and she said, "Cindy, I hate to wake you but a plane has flown into one of the World Trade Center Towers, it's awful and sad. You have to see this!" So I woke up, turned on the coffee and called her back from my living room. As we were talking and I was giving her information from different channels...the second plane hit...we were stunned...there was silence...and an OH MY GOD...and then I said to her..Linda this is not an accident. Our hearts broke...our lives changed and the city that I once lived in and that my Mom and sister live in was under attack. The rest of that morning was spent checking on them and watching the news and PRAYING!!! The city of New York rose out of this like a shining beacon. New York City is the greatest city. I live in Los Angeles and love it here...but I had nothing but pride for the City of New York and for our country. My oldest son (13) was devastated. He had to come home from school that morning because he couldn't stop crying for NYC and his family. The next day he started a fundraiser at his school and collected $524.00 for the firehouse in my Mom's neighborhood (9th street). The first tower had just been hit. We watched in shock and awe as a second plane crashed into the second tower, live on international TV. We were told immediately that it was terrorists. Our news people mentioned the Arab world over and over. We saw the external wreckage at the Pentagon, but very little was shown of that -- or even talked about. Then there were the other planes... they said there was one in Pennsylvania, and then it went down. There was another plane that they were reporting had been hijacked, but just stopped talking about it - either it was misreported earlier, or they decided to drop it. We watched the replay of the crash over and over and over and then better footage taken by amateurs showed up... and that was played over and over and over. The original estimates of the dead and injured reached as high as 20,000... while people were still streaming out of the coulds of white smoke and dust and debris that surrounded the World Trade Center Complex. I called in to work to ask if they had heard, and was told to get there immediately. No one at the office seemed to be bothered by the attack at that point... they just wanted to get on with their day. So, I drove to Austin and sat at my desk all day, checking CNN online every now and again for updates. My friend called and said, "Do you know what's going on?", and I casually said, "No...". She then told me to turn on the tv and that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. At first, I thought she meant the World Trade Bldg. in Baltimore, but then realized it was New York. I watched the upstairs tv, and just stood there in shock. At that time, there were rumors of other hijacked planes in the air, and it was numbing. As I watched the second plane crash, I thought I better call my husband, (who works in DC for the govt) and tell him to come home. When I called him, it took a while to get through, because the phone lines were all busy. He said he would leave work, and did. It took him 3 hours to get home, when it typically takes 45 minutes. It was just so scary not knowing what was going to occur next. I then tried to call my cousins and Aunt who live and work in NY. I wasn't sure where my cousin David's office was in relation to the WTC. The phones were all busy or had a message saying that call volume was so high, to try later. I just kept calling and calling for about an hour and a half, I guess. I decided to e-mail David at work, and was relieved to find that his office is closer to midtown. He informed me that all the relatives were alright. When my husband came home, I was so relieved, and we basically sat and watched as much of the events unfolding that we could, without having our daughter see it. For at least a month or two afterwards, I would often have bad dreams about the events, and was almost CONSTANTLY thinking about it, and reliving the images in my head. We live close to I-95, and it is a popular route for jets. When planes were allowed back in the air, every time I saw one, I actually looked up, and expected to see it explode in mid-air. I remember being late, so I was rushing my way to school. I was already on the train at about 8:40am for a 35 minute commute. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, rush-hour was moving along as usual, small delays here and there. I kept hearing announcements by the train conductor about some "serious incident" and that all trains will not be going beyond Canal Street. I exited the train at about 9:15 from the 8th street station on the N&R line (both planes had already hit the towers by then). I noticed that it was an extremely beautiful day and almost everyone was walking peculiarly slow on the streets. No panic, just stunned faces as I glanced at them. I wasn't yet aware of the situation until I looked South on Broadway and noticed a dark cloud in the sky, I assumed it was just a fire. I walked into my school building and bumped into my boss, he just said that a small plane hat hit one of the world trade center towers. It seemed funny at first to think of a small plane just running into the towers as if they are so difficult to notice. Then I ran upstairs to class, noticed a monitor in the lobby showing images of the event. Strangely, NOBODY was reacting loud. I think it was just the shock that kept them quiet. Moving along, my class was still in session, so I walked in and sat in my chair. It was strange sitting there knowing that only a few blocks away something terrible was happening. I'm not sure everyone was yet aware of the magnitude of this. The TV in the lobby was facing our classroom. Everyone would turn here and there to see what was going on. All of a sudden everything got very quiet and we all turned around, that's when the first tower fell. Someone walked into the room and announced that we should all go home. I walked outside the room and starred at the monitor as the towers fell in real-time. That's when I panicked, I ran to the phone and called my mom, I was only on the phone with her for 10 seconds before I lost connection. That's when every phone (including mobile) went dead. I ran to a computer, logged on AOL and began to send messages to friends telling them that I'm okay and to inform my parents. I started crying a lot, something I don't do very often. I began to worry since my best friend worked near the towers, but thank God he called in sick that day. I remained in school until 10:30, around the time the second tower collapsed. Maybe it's because it was a nice day outside, but everyone was very calmed. Walking north away from the event. We both watched in horror as we saw the first plane inside the Tower. We'd thought, as may others had, that it was a fluke, that a pilot had horribly and mistakenly crashed the plane. Then the second plane hit. We were dumbfounded. The rest of the day was filled with confusion and sadness. Although we weren't anywhere near the damage, we still felt it deeply. Later on that day, I got a call from a friend of mine. She informed me that two friends of ours, David and Lynn Angell, were on Flight 11, which is the first plane to have crashed.
