Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Fisrt off..I am a native of Trenton New Jersey. I have been livning in Wisconsin since 2000. I was at work on that morning building an addtion on a house when the owner came out and said in a paniced voice " We're under attack"... I immediatly went in to watch what was happening...the first plane had just hit...I was in total disbelife of what I was seeing ... Then as I was watching...the second plane smashed into the other tower....I got physaclly ill... I had to leave right then and there to go and make a few phone calls to find out if my cousins were okay...they both live in New York... as it turned out...my one cousin Eric happens to be a detective in Long Island and was there before the second plane hit.... THEN I found out that his brother was in the first tower that morning for work... he had a meeting 6 blocks down from the 2 towers... he was in the middle of the meeting when all hell broke loose... had he waited another 20 minutes he would have been in the building when it was hit... I thank god, as does he...the only thing that he lost was his miny van...buried tho with 27 of his co-workers... I still don't understand why this happened ...I don't think any of us will... but I do know this...we can NEVER...NEVER forget ... I remember when I was a kid going up to visit them ...watching the towers rise up from the ground to their finally stage on the sky line...what a sight... now they...and 3,000 of our friends...are gone... leaves a BIG hole in ones life... I guess the one thing that we have that makes this country so great..is each other... On Tuseday September 11, 2001, I was in 9th grade. I was going to 3rd period, Global Studies. The teacher was Mrs. Capen. She had reddish brown hair, tall, and she didn't wear glasses. When I walked in the classroom the television was on. Mrs. Capen told us to pull up a chair and to listen to what was happening in New York City. So I did, I pulled up a chair and was listening to what was happening on the televison. I saw a horrible sight; there was a building on fire!! The news reporters were saying that some people that were in some relation to Osama bin Lanan had hijacked a plane and had flown it into one of the Twin Towers. Now this was really weird, because just the week bfore this happened we were learning about the Taliban, and Osama bin Ladan and what horrible things they had been doing. At about 9:07am another plane had flown into the other World Trade Building, I thought, "how could people do such a thing to innocent people?" "Do they have any common sense?" At 9:30am another plane had hit the Pentagon in Washington D.C. After this had happened everything was shut down, every airport, borders everything. Why didn't they shut airports down after the first plane went into the one of the Twin Tower? Afterhearing all of this I wanted to do something to help. I am to young to give blood, and I just couldn't grab my bags and go there to help clear the rubble away. I am to young for everything! President Bush came on the news to give a speech on what was happening in the world and what was going to happen. He said that there would be justice, there would be mourning for those who lost someone, and he would get Osama bin Ladan dead or alive. Was there going to be another war? I thought that World War II was the war to end all wars? Mrs. Capen told us that we are witness of a huge tragedy in history. What I saw on the television was unbeliveable. I kept thinking, "did I know anyone that was falling from the burning building?" Or that was trying to rescue all the people trapped in the Towers? When the towers collapsed there was thousands of people killed by those inconsiderate terrorist groups. We didn't do anything to you did we? NO! Just because we have moved on with better technology and life syles doesn't mean you cna come and kill us! What I heard that day from several teachers was that we need revenge, they where quite angry at this whole situation. Many people were affected in our small town because they knew someone in New York City or Washington D.C. My opinion and felings with this whole issue is that it was very stupid in the terrorist's part. It is a free country here, we have so many things that people in other countries don't. They should be a part of this new technology and government. I think it would be a good idea to let the people everywhere try our society for one day just to see if they like it. I bet they would. We have so much to offer them computers, television, microwaves, EDUCATION, medical treatment, and even more technology than they have ever seen! People in my school and people in the small town of Barker take a lot of things for granted. For example school. Kids in my school think that school is stupid, why do they have to be there? Personally I like going to school but a lot of kids in Afganistan aren't allowed to go to school. The pledge is another thing that some kids take for ganted. Some don't even say the pledge! I mean that is something to be proud of. People are in Afganistan RIGHT NOW fighting for FREEDOM for us and the poor people that were terrorizerd, and don't even know what freedom is! Everyone should be free in the U.S.A. This is my opinion on September 11th, 2001. IT COSTS NOTHING TO BE PATRIOTIC!! Tell us your story: I will never forget what a beautiful day it was in washington: blue skies, sun shining down, a very comfortable temperature in the low to mid-70s. Afetr the events occurred, and everyone poured into the streets, the scene was like one of those disaster movies from the 1970s -- traffic jammed up, people trying to get out of the downtown area on foor. Rumors were flying everywhere: tehre's a fire burning on the mall, the Pentagon's been hit by a plane. Entire city blocks were roped off, with policemen standing guard. They said there had been bomb threats. It was very strange. By the time I finally got up to DuPont Circle and ducked into a tavern, the TV screens were showing the images of the towers collapsing. I refused to believe it was true. I thought the TV announcers must have gotten it wrong. Tat's when I found out that teh Pentagon had been hit, and that teh plane had circled over downtown Washington before going back to Virginia and turning around to hit the Pentagon. I felt like those of us who work near the White House (about two blocks from my office) may have had our lives saved by the heroism of the passangers on the plane that went down in Pennsylvania. September 11th will be forever with me. I still think about it almost every day. It was eerie that day when I got to the school.The classroom TVs were tuned in to the Sacramento news before school,during breaks,lunch and after school. The children were extremely affected by what they had watched that morning on TV before school. We did the flag salute as usual but with more meaning and more expression that day. Questions seemed to fly all day long from the students, Why did they do this? Who did this? Will they come here and do something to us? We all tried to reasure the children but at the same time were asking many of the same questions. I don,t believe I have ever felt so shaken by a national event, except for the assassination of President Kennedy when I was in fourth grade myself. My teacher cried that day. I was afraid then, just as my students were on September 11,2001. I pray for the families, the heroes, and for America. She asked us not to tell the students, and since I teach young ones, I didn't. Several, however, could tell that we were upset about something. At lunch, several of us gathered and had prayer. I volunteered to keep the students in my class to watch a movie because I really couldn't handle watching details of it at school--I didn't want to break down in tears in front of the students. When I did finally arrive home after picking up my 5 month old son, I burst into tears and cried off and on all evening while watching news coverage. It was overall one of the hardest days to endure of my life. I wanted to run home and be with my family and never leave the house, as many of us did. We teachers really didn't attempt to teach anything else that day because WE couldn't handle it. My morning routine typically consisted of getting up with my daughters and sending them off to school, then reading the paper while watching "Today". On this particular morning, however, I decided to go back to bed. (My husband's birthday was the day before. Since he had to work second shift on his natal day, I waited up for him. Hence, the going back to bed.) When I awoke the second time, my husband and I shared breakfast, talked about how we would celebrate his birthday in grand style on the 12th (since he also had to pull a shift on the 11th; he's a sheriff's lieutenant, by the way) and he went about his task of refurbishing a shed outside. I puttered away in the house, still with the TV off. Then the phone rang. This was the end of normalcy. "With who? Where?" were my exasperated responses to my mom's news. "Are you watching it? Turn on the TV!" She cried. When I asked which station, she blurted out, "Any!" And there it was: the smoking skyline of New York. It was hard to tell at first what wasn't on fire; mom thought bombs were being dropped. We remained silent on the line while we each stared at our respective screens. The World Trade Centers had been hit. Then she told me a piece of unsettling news: my brother, who was celebrating his own birthday with a little weekend getaway to New York, stayed an extra day and was in those very towers less than 24 hours prior to this atrocity. "Oh my God! Is he home? Is he safe?" Yes, I was told, his flight was nearly cancelled due to bad weather but made it out very late Monday evening. Promising to stay in touch with her, I hung up. I needed my husband to see this. I ran out to the shed, yelling how New York looked like a scene from "Independence Day". Only it wasn't aliens doing the devestation; it was humans. We were riveted to the TV for the next several hours, til my husband had to go into work. I worried for him, thinking that surely the Sheriff's Department would be doubly busy that night. Uniforms never get to stay on the hanger. I debated getting my girls from school but figured they were OK.I decided to do what I had planned on doing: picking up my husband's favorite pizza, his birthday meal of choice, at a carry-out place in Milwaukee some 40 miles away. It was near the airport. Quite unnerving. The car radio played no music; only talk. How could such a gorgeous day have such a terrible pall cast over it? What-ifs raced through my head: what if they close the city and I'm stuck here? How will I get to my kids? Funny how the mind works. Police cars were everywhere and newscarriers were hawking special editions of the Journal/Sentinel on street corners. I didn't get one. I made my journey there and back without incident, save for the pounding in my chest and the wondering of what was yet to come. It was on the ride home that I noticed the American flags, draping from houses and businesses alike. It was still there, just like in the song. And we would be too, a little shaken but we'd regroup. My daughters were home by 3:30 and once I had them back in my sight, breathing came a little easier. I was required to be at work at 10 am. My clock was set for 9am. The first thing I heard was that an aircraft had hit the first tower. As a person with a commercial pilot's rating I thought finally some idiot has finally done it, flown a small aircraft into one of the towers. Having flown for years around the area up and down the Hudson corridor at a required altitude several hudred feet below the World Trade Towers , I remember with pride looking up to see these beautiful constructions as I proudly took friends and loved ones past that site. As a pilot safey is the primary consideration. The rules are simple. Do not bend metal and above all else even under dire conditions... never never ever bend people. Three minutes later I instantly watched live on TV hundreds die. A split second later my TV went dead. I did not have cable. I knew what had transpired. For 4 days I couod not contact those I love. My TV went black. I saw hundreds die instantly in an act that went against every thing my life stood for. I knew then that it was a terrorist situation. As a pilot I knew people that had died flying in the past, but this was different. I had employees ,friends and friends of family that worked a primary job at the Towers. MY best friends pregnant daughter was in building #7. Another employee was MIA for two weeks. We thought she might be dead. I will not metnion the countless others I knew that worked there. I was so mad I went to work saying these bastards will not change the way I conduct my day. When I got to work near an airport I walked in the door to find people gathered around a cable TV in the the lower level health club weeping saying that the first tower had fallen,moments later the second one fell. Eventually the company sent us all home. No business could be conducted as every client was asking our employees what was going on. They eventually sent us home.I was one of the last that went. As a child terrorism from the Mideast had impacted my family. We were told that there would be no negotiation with such individuals in the event that one of us were kidnapped. It made me feel worthless and angry . One of my fathers business partner's grandson was abducted and an ear sent in the mail as proof as the terrorists' sincerety. We were frightened but filled with resolve that we would not give one dammed inch against those who would attempt to adjust our way of life. I left work and went to the nearest hospital to give blood in the vain hope that some had lived. The next day I climbed the hill in my town to watch th fires burn and the plume of smoke rise to 2-3000 feet and create an anvil an that height and drift slightly to the east, knowing that poeple where still dying. It was a strangly surreal day. From the top of my mountain flew a flag. Flowers were placed in the highest elevation marker. People with newborn children in thier backpacks handed binoculars to those who arrived to watch. Echos of children laughing and unanware, playing climbing the mountain glanced off the hillside. My cell phone did not work except for execpt for long distance. I call a friend in the midwest and asked him to pray for us. For the next year there were funerals every day. For a YEAR. Three years later I can begin to talk about it. The impact im my life exists to this day. I believe that the rest of the US has forgotten and gone on. I will never forget those fathers and firefighters, those employees and business partners that I miss to this very day. Yes it is years later. I have taken friends to ground zero under the requirement that they promise me that they will do something nurturing and loving for themselves to offset the damage that will be done by the visit. I miss everyday those who sacrificed health and security and hope that I do not give in to those that would do us harm. At 7 am on the 11th she called me and woke me up and said. "Mom, someone is bombing the World Trade Center and the Pentagon!" I got up and turned on the TV and did not leave it for 2 days. When my daughter came home from school, she was quite upset as they had a television on all day in all her classes and she watched the WTCs go doen over and over again. That night she asked me to sleep with her and I am a single mom, so we spent that night together talking and the next 2 nights after that. We remember how quiet the skies were, and Ehryn asked me some very difficult questions over the next few days: Mom, are we going to bomb Afganistan? Who are their allies? Are China and Russia friendly with Afganistan? Do they have nuclear bombs? Why did this happen? What I told her those first few days was that I did not have the answers but that I would stay with her and keep her safe. What I also did was to start talking to her about my feelings about US foreign policy in the Middle East, and about Peace. This is where we are today: we both see any further violence as a cycle that will be hard to stop; and we truly feel that America, through this tragedy, has been given an incredible oppurtunity to make some deep changes that will effect the future of the world for all of humankind. We are from Connecticut and I was informed that my girl friend from high school in Madison Connecticut was a flight attendent on the plane that was seen hitting the second tower. Tell us your story: After snoozing for forty mintues, much to the dismay of my roomate, eating a quick bowl of instant oatmeal and shoving a notebook and pen into my backback I hit the sidewalk. Destinaton:Statistics 100,8:00AM, a college student's nightmare. My notes dated 9-11 were slightly sloppier than normal--as my eyes drooped my numbers looped, and grew fainter. About half way into the hour and fifteen minute lecture I looked into my backpack for my cell phone, which at the time served not only as a mode of commuication, but a watch. Drat. I'd fogotten it. When the dismissal bell reeled me out of my semi-sleeping state for good, I decided to use the fifteen minutes inbeteween class to run back to my dorm for my phone. "Scary that I feel so lost without it," I thought. To my surprise, my roomate was not still buried under her covers with the shades pulled tight. "Abby, look," and she pointed at the television. I'm not sure if I saw the planes crash into the towers live, or if it was a replay, but the attack had just happened. I sank onto the armrest of the couch and stared at the screen. They played the planes crashing into the Twin Towers over and over again. There were worse nightmare than 8:00AM classes, and this one was coming true. I started dialing, but so did everyone else in Champain. I managed to get ahold of my brother, also a student on campus, who had watched the planes crash live on the big screen TV in the union. "Have you talked to mom and dad," I asked? "Not yet." When I did get ahold of my parents, both school teachers who had spent the day trying to handle the crisis appropriately, I aske my Dad what to think, as at this point I was having difficulty doing so for myself. He was amazing calm. No shouts for revenge, no hysteria. Of course he was horrifed, devestated, and bewildered, but not once did I see the intelligence I have always admired in him waver. After a few days had passed, I continued talking to my Dad. He, just like the minister at my church (although we were not attending at the time I read a sermon she delivered later) believed that as a country we must foucs on answering questions such as why and how, instead of demands, such as get revenge, and fight back. The roots of terrorism are deep, and merely bombing Afganistan out of recognition would not solve the problem. My church is the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, in IL, look it up--the sermon is on the site--it explains my feelings much better than I can. The rest of the day is hard to remember. I do, however, remember a significant differnce in the way in which my professors handeled the attacks. In every class, studnets were trying to piece together the story, spreading rumors and quelling rumors simultaneoulsy. In my English class there was a fourth plane still in flight, in psych class the next target was Chapmagin, for intelligence reasons. In most classes my teachers decided that discussion about the attacks was more advantageous than lecture. These were true educators. In only one class were the attacks not even mentioned by the instructor. That hour and fifteen minutes were some of the longest of my life. I did called my ex-boyfreind of four years. "I love you," we said. I was not unlike the majority of the country, checking in on loved-ones and letting poeple know that I cared. Campus was alive. Everyone was talking. I spent the night in deep conversation with my best freind, an exchange student from Australian. It was a frightening time to be so far from home. When the newspapers and magazines began printing pictures, it was the ones of the people jumping out the windows that disturbed me the most. Recently, a fire-fighter who is a friend of mine showed me a picture of the truck he used after driving from IL to NY to help. In the dust someone had written "God Bless America." Nine months after the attacks, and my skin still crawled, my eyes watered. I can only hope that the world finds peace. My thoughts go out to all of the victims of September 11th. That you, as indiviual, good poople should have to suffer truly saddens me. I can only hope, and as I get older and more informed, do, my best to aswer the question WHY, and with this answer hopefully we can put an end to this suffering in America, and around the world. I had went to the restroom and there was alot of people standing around the tv monitors. One of the guys with an office in the back came up front and wanted to know if we had heard anything about a fire in the Trade Center. Some people started searching on the TV for news, I immediately picked up the phone and started dailing my freind Natalie's number at Cantor Fitzgerald. There was no answer. Then someone else comes running in and says that another plane has hit. My mind starts to go to all my friends and family who are in the building traveling and working everyady. My fiance worked in the World Financial center right across the street. this was one of the worse days of my life. My friend Natalie turned out to be fine. her son did not want to go to school that day so she called in late ut she still suffers from the loss of all her friends. my fiance had nightmares for months after but he was also okay. Tell us your story: I was an NYPD Narcotics Detective, assigned to Election Duty for the day as it was the New York State Primary in an elementary school. When you work Election Duty you don't carry a radio as Detectives are generally not assigned in an area where we work. At about 9 am a man wearing a Walkman came in to vote and commented to me "Damn shame about the World Trade Center." It was the first indication I had that anything was wrong. I tried to call my command via my cellular phone, but couldn't make the connection. I used an office phone and called my Watch Commander, who told me what happened. At that point, both buildings had been hit, but were still standing. I told the Board of Election employees what had happened and one of the ladies, who was a lay minister, started praying. A short time later we learned that the Towers had collapsed. My brother worked two blocks from the Towers, and I could only pray that he was okay; he's just the type of person to run into a burning building to help people. I called and left a message on his answering machine that I was okay, that my cell phone didn't work, and asked that he leave a message on my home machine. I tried to call my Aunt in Florida, but couldn't get through, so I called my neighbor and asked her to call my Aunt; my neighbor's brother was a Fire Dept. Batallion Chief and a number of her nephews were firefighters. She already knew that they were all at the site. She agreed to call my Aunt, who I knew in turn would call my other brother who lives in France. They cancelled the elections and I and a number of other officers from my command went to the nearest Police Precinct to report for duty. We were held there until 1 am and ordered to report to our true commands at 5 am. When I got home there were messages from both my brothers and my Aunt. All of them said the same thing: we love you. We thank god you're safe. Do what you have to do and call us when you can. Two of my co-workers lost brothers - Det. Joe Paolillo lost Batallion Chief John Paolillo and Det. Letty Mojica lost Firefighter Manny Mojica. My friend, P.O. Annette Torress lost her boyfriend, P.O. Santos Valentine; they have only been able to identify a small part of his remains, but it is something for Annette and his family. The hardest loss was P.O. Walwyn Stuart; he served 20 years with the NYPD, retiring as a Narcotics Detective. Quiet, soft spoken, funny and deeply religious, he went to work for the Port Authority PD when he left the NYPD. The attacks had begun and Diane Sawyer cut to the breaking news. A plane had hit the World Trade Center. At this time, no one knew if it was a small plane or a commercial airliner. There were a few eye-witnesses on the streets below the towers, but none were sure of what they saw. Shortly after this, if I remember correctly, Dan Rather was talking to us (I may have changed the channel) with the Towers in the background when the second plane slammed into the South Tower. Right before our eyes, our lives changed forever. I just knew, as I'm sure everyone else who was watching did, that this was something horrible and incomprehensible and it definitely was no accident. From there I grabbed the phone and called my mother. I knew she didn't know. I told her what I knew, but then I had to hang up so that I wouldn't miss anything. I had a three year old and a 10 month old at the time and I remember feeling really guilty because I couldn't entertain them or even care for them because I couldn't take my eyes and ears away from my television. I remember that part really well, the feeling of guilt, of feeling so small and worthless, like so what if my kid's diaper hasn't been changed in four hours and how dare I worry about that at a time like this! I just couldn't possibly play with them either, because I could not fake the happy, silly emotions that it would take. When the first Tower began to fall, I was standing in my kitchen and my hand went immediately to my mouth. I started saying "Oh my God" over and over and over- I couldn't stop. I continued to watch through pouring tears, and continued to chant my "Oh my God"s for what seemed an eternity. I couldn't imagine who would want to do this to "us". Throughout the course of the day, and the following days and weeks, I was glad to be living where I do. The Midwest seemed somehow safer than alot of other places, and it still does. September 11th changed me forever, in more ways than I could ever imagine it would, and in some ways that I would not like to admit. It was sad because my teachers were crying and some kids were crying also because they were worried about the people that were in the building. I felt extremely bad because of all the people who died that day. I also remember all the times they replayed the plane flying right into the side of the Twin Towers. Just watching the smoke come out of the building just wanted to make me cry. When I came home I just looked so depressed, my mom knew why I was sad so she just told me it would be fine. Even though I didn?t lose anyone in the crashing of the Twin Towers I still felt terrible for people who lost loved ones in the terrible tragedy. After all this has happen it has changed my life. I know how valuable life really is now. I hope later in life nothing like this ever happens again. They said they had been an accident and that a plane had flown into one of the world trade center towers. I remember thinking to myself how odd that sounded. How does a plane accidentally fly into that huge of a target and what was it doing so low. When you do research for a living thats how your mind works. I felt saddened because of the loss of life. So we listened to the radio for more news. Then programming was interrupted again saying another plane had flown into the south tower intentionally. A few minutes later it came on that the pentagon had been slammed into by a commercial airliner. America was under attack and I just stood in the middle of our lab in absolute shock. We all looked at each other in horror. Horror that our country was being attacked by cowardly terrorist in our home soil. The radio announcer came on and said that there were still 25 planes un accounted for in the sky. Since we work in a federal building then we all became really horrified. What if one of those planes was headed for NIOSH. We are a branch of the CDC and are in the Health and Human Services department. At that point someone came in and said that they had the TV on in one of the conference rooms. So we all went in and watched in horror at what was going on in NYC. I have never been so scared in my life. I thought what about the schools. I had a 11 year child probally scared to death at what was happening that day. We were evacuated and I immediately went to pick up my son at school. My child was watching the tv when the second tower was struck with the plane. It must have seemed that the world was ending to him. It seemed that way to me. I cried all the way home for those people whose life was snuffed out by cowards who didn't believe in the values for which America stood. I watched the news in horror and hope. Hope that some people would walk from the rubble. I remember thinking when the first tower fell"My god all those people". My son and I sat and watched CNN for awhile. When I heard about flight 93 and how they rushed the cockpit and intentionally downed that plane to save thousands of americans. I thought to myself "THAT IS WHAT AMERICA STAND FOR AND WE WILL NOT GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT". Those gentlemen and woman on flight 93 are true american hereos as well every victim and survivor at the NYC and the pentagon. I was still in shock 2 days later. I'm still in shock a year later. Our world has been FOREVER changed. I still believe in our country. This tragedy has only made our country stronger. Look at all the flags that now fly everywhere. The terrorist can never take that away, never. America is strong. God Bless America Freedom Life goes on, that is the best tribute we could give to those that died on September 11th,2001.
