Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My children were at school, and I was sleeping in, when my husband called to say that there had been a plane crash. We live near a small airport so I was thinking that he ment that a plane had crashed there. When he told me it was on T.V. I was not prepared at all for what I saw! I remeber my mother telling me she remembers exactly where she was and what she was doing when it was announced that President Kennady had been shot. Well I will never forget where I was and what I was doing. I remember it like it was yesterday. I felt the strongest need to be with my children. I went to their school and was asked not to say anything about the bombing and if any students asked questions, I was to remain calm and be evasive. I can't remember a time that it was ever so hard to be calm! I wanted to hold every child there! I found it too difficult to keep my composure and I wanted my own children at home with me, where at least we were together. Not to mention we had no idea what else might happen during that horrible day. That was a day that I never felt so totally helpless. When my children asked, "Mom, are we going to be okay?" For the first, and God help us, hopefully the last time, I had absolutely no honest answer I could give them, because I was terrified inside. I did reassure them that the U.S.A. has the best military in the world and they will do anything and everything to make sure we are safe. They did seem to find comfort in this. We shed many tears in the days to follow and we prayed to God and gave thanks we still had each other. I think everything happens for a reason. Maybe one reason was to bring my husbend and I closer to our children and each other. Maybe another was to teach my children to never take anything for granted, for tomorrow it could all be gone. Our heart and prayers go out to ALL who have given their lives so that the rest of us can be free. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: We had just moved northwest of Pittsburgh after spending most of our lives in Pittsburgh's east suburbs. I was desperate to find work and was having a one-woman pity party. My husband called and said he heard something about a plane hitting the World Trade Center. I figured someone grazed it by mistake. Then I called my best friend (mostly to commisserate)we mentioned the plane in passing. Then the man from the phone company came by to put in the 2nd line for the computer. He worked diligently. I updated him periodically on the tragedy but, he wasn't very interested. I was alone in a new house in a new neighborhood with a complete stranger. My eyes were glued to the television. Of all the horrors I saw that day one stands out. When the first tower collapsed the talking heads were bantering and didn't notice. I started yelling at the TV-"the building is collapsing". Finally, the talking heads heard me and reported the collapse. Another thing I will never forget are the people that dove off the building. I will never forget that sight. When I started heading for the office my partner ran up to me and said "Did you hear" I said "hear what" she replied "a plane struck one of the world trade center towers." With this I walked into the office and there on the tv was the God awful site of the first tower burning. I stated "ah it was probably a really bad accident." Thats when a co-worker stepped in and said "NY city has a no fly zone so its not an accident" Looking up at the tv screen I said "so you think its a what the f was that." The second plane hits and we sat in dismay saying things like "oh my God." I went outside to my unit where my partner was checking the ambulance for the day. I said to her "another plane just hit the other tower." She just shrugged it off (please realize we are in the rescue bussiness so not much surprises us) like it was no big deal. My company sent us on the road to do transports. We had a pick up at a nursing home and while my partner was getting the paper work I watched the tv in my pt room. Then it happened one of the towers collapsed. I ran to tell my partner and thats when it set in. "Oh my God" she replied I had made several calls to my wife leaving messages on the answer machine cause she was alone. Finally she got through to my cell phone. There was panic in her voice and I stated "call your cousin right now and tell her to come to the house to sit with you" Her cousin lives around the corner and agreed my wife shouldnt be alone. As the day went on we began finding out more such as Pentagon and Penn. flight crash. Fear and reality set in. As my wife and I would touch base alot that day the shock was just to much to believe. Around 12:30-1:00pm my dispatcher keys me up and says "base to 964" I replied "964 on go ahead base" 964 be advised you will meet up with the paramedic unit. You and paramedic______ wil be taking your ambulance into ground zero. We were excited not because of the tragedy but because we felt helpless on Long Island. I met up with my other partner. I told him I need to go home quick and get supplies. My wife was crying when I left that day. She was worried for my life and sad for those down there. On the way in the site was just unimaginable. We never made it down to ground zero. We were in Manhattan till about 8:00pm. We returned to base and I was on my way home. On the radio came Tears In Heaven and I had to pull over and cry for it finally sank in my brothers and sisters (FDNY) had lost there lives today. When I got home my wife was happy to see me. Then I called my fire department knowing we have alot of guys in FDNY two people were unaccounted for. Well as days went on we found one guy and he was fine. As time went on we realized we lost a brother (Nicholos Chiafolo)a Lt of our local volunteer fire department.As the days went on so did the tears....................... My dad called and told us about the first plane hitting. So I turned the t.v. right on. No one knew it was an attack on America. Everyone was just saying "what a horrible accident." Then I was watching and I saw the second plane hit. I couldn't believe it. I was late for school that day because I wanted to keep watching. I checked into school around 10:45 or so. I just caught phrases of a plane hitting the world trade center and decided to turn on the television. As we watched the images drawing us closer and closer to the horror of the collapse, I was weighing whether to call co-workers. Eventually we all made it to work and spent the day with one eye on the TV and trying to be normal. What I remember most was how quiet it was and how tenderly people were treating each other. Someone came through the office and said, the World Trade Center has been hit. I didn't know what they meant. In a conference room around the corner I saw people gathered, and I went to see what was happening. When I arrived was right after the second plane went into the second building. We were watching CNN. I was devistated and numb. A few minutes later I heard that the Pentagon was on fire, they didn't know if it was a bomb or something completely unrelated. One of my closest friends is a police officer for the Pentagon. As soon as it was confirmed that it had been hit by a plane, I ran to my desk and tried desperately to reach her. I was in complete shock and disbelief at all that was happening around us. One of my co-workers knew how upset I was. She and I stopped in the hall and just lifted a prayer to God. I will never forget how relieved I was when my husband left me a message saying that my friend had called to let me know that she was alive. My heart still aches for all those who lost loved ones, and for all the babies and children that lost parents. I have a beautiful bracelet that I wear to remind me of 9/11 and how our nation lost any innocence it may have still had. I work at the campus tv station and was doing my office hours in the office when I heard the news. The professor in charge of the station came in and told us what happened. The television was immediately turned on and we sat in silence watching. It was devastating, shocking. I left the station and went back to my dorm room. My roommate, Julie, and I turned on the TV and just cried. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was escorting a patient over to the lab when I saw on T.V this tall building with all of this smoke billowing out of it. I thought wow, I wonder what happened there??? Then I heard them say that an airplane had hit the building. I thought what an aweful accident I wonder if the pilot had a heart attack or seizure or something and lost control. Then to my shock I saw the second plane hit the second tower! Then the words were that this was highly thought to be a terrorist attack. I was mortified! The potential loss of life was enormous, and that was minimal until the towers came crashing down. I felt an emptiness and sadness that I can not explain. Then the pentagon was attacked and then I was even more frightened. Where would they attack next? Then the rumors of another plane circling that officials felt was also controlled by terrorists. This plane ended up being the fateful flight 93. I just began praying to God for his mercy and that this come to an end. I must say that since this has happened I have taken a more active awareness of current political and world events. At 27 you really don't think of those things. I had never even heard of the World Trade Center until last September 11. I am thankful to my Lord for everyday he allows me to wake up and breathe and live another day - especially when so many families lost their loved ones and would give anything for that priviledge now. I definetly tell my husband, family and friends more now than ever befroe that I love them and appreceiate them in my life. I don't think I could be as strong as some of these people who have lost so much. My sister-in-law knows a lady in Bay City, Michigan who trains dogs. This dog, Salty, which was the third dog she had trained was owned by a paralyzed and mostly blind man who was employed in the World Trade Center. When the plane hit he told his dog at the stairwell to go home. To get out of there. The dog got caught up in others trying to flee. He turned around came back 17 stories and drug his owner to the stairwell where others helped him down the stairs. Only 30 people after him would escape and survive before the tower collapsed! His loyal dog saved his life and this woman had a hand in that years ago when she trained him. There were so many heroes that dreadful day and I pray everyday for those that have lost loved ones or like Lauren Manning who was just on Oprah this week who have been physically scarred (she had over 82% of her body burned) and are constantly reminded of the effects of that day. I am very proud to be an American and proud of all those who gave of themselves sacrificially and selflessly that day and in the days to come. I personally will never forget this national tragedy. Tell us your story: Im sitting here staring out my window and thinking of this day 3 years ago.....3 years ago on this date and i can still tell you what i was doing down to the last detail..... It was my Senior year in High School... It started out like any other morning...My mom and sister were sick that day so instead of going to school i stayed home that day to take care of them ( ironicly if i had gone to school i was going to wear and american flag tank top) so when i stayed home i put on my ARMY sweats and turned on tv and was watching Muarry(TV Talk show) When my phone rang it was my Brother in law he was calling to tell me to put it on CNN that a plane hit the World Trade Center not think his joke was funny i yelled and hung up he called back insisting so i changed the channel and was watch just as the 2nd plane hit i hung up not realizing and stared in asonishment at the tv... i was scared for the people there thier familes and the world i sat watching as another plane hit the pentagon and the 1st tower of the world trade center crumbled to the ground crying being alone cause my mom and sister were sleeping and not know what to think or say to them when they awoke i heard my mom calling and she asked what sick movie i was watch about the world trade center getting blown up i cried and said it wasnt a movie we were attacked and she got out of bed and joined me at the tv as the 2nd tower fell then hearing of a plane being gunned down and another crashing in a penn... field i was scared and had no idea what to think or do I was frech from army basic training and was scared id have to go fight in war its somthing i will never forget because i could walk out my house and smell the smoke drifting down the shore line from what used to be the World Trade Center...There are other things i have seen up close and personal but for me bring back to many horrible memories to even speak of It was a day and even month ill never forget cause the folowing days my unit for the arym was activated and sent away for a year they have since come back but are now again being activated and sent to iraq to fight in this war on terrorism so thing like this dont happen again...... To the families and fellow Americans who have lost loved ones i send my love and best wishes that now in this time of griefing and rememberance you keep your faith and home that justic will come upon those who do such devious acts And to those now who are fighting for freedom in Iraq and those who have lost thier lives fighting for freedom in Iraq I Slaute you For you and then men and women who have died now and in the past and who will die in the future , whether it be police firefighters or our military, you are our heros you are the reason we remain a free country and you are the role models the youth of today need.... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am still in as much shock today as I was on that horrid day. My son was very sick and I had to take the day off from work, which is very far and few in between. I was watching tv waiting for my son to wake up to give him medicine, while the whole tragedy unfolded right before my eyes. My son woke up crying and I could not move. It took me a good 15 minutes to pull myself together to be able to get my son. Once I got him I did not want to let him go, I feared everything at that point and had a huge cloud of uncertainty and fear hanging over my head. To me it just felt like the end, I could not figure out what it was the end of, but I had a huge feeling of loss and pain deep inside. It was a life changing event for me and I cannot imagine how people who suffered loss as a result of 9/11 go on. To me the entire event is so unimaginable that I still have trouble comprehending just how something like this could happen. My heart does and will forever go out to everyone who lost someone on 9/11. It breaks my heart over and over again to think of the children who will never grow up with their parents as a result of 9/11. Everynight when I hug my son and kiss him goodnight I thank god for those moments and cherish them like no other. I could not imagine it any other way and yet after 9/11 I realize how all that could change in an instant. I never in my life thought there would be a situation where I could not describe it with words strong enought to convey my true feelings. 9/11 was an unthinkably sad say. Tell us your story: When I woke up in the morning of September 11th, I had no clue of what was going on so I went on with my daily morning schedule before school started. Then I arrived at school and I reported to my first period class and my teacher was watching the news. At first when I saw the planes hit the building I thought it was a movie because id did not seem real to me. I just could not believe what I was saying. It was just to hard to believe and then I began to cry as I was watching the World Trade Centers get hit. I began to cry constantly as they showed people jumping out of the building. I felt sorry for those who were in the World Trade Centers. Then when they showed the World Trade Centers fall, I began to shake and then I became frozen. I just didn't believe that people would actually do such a thing to hurt innocent people. I saw people running on the streets and people looking for those people who they lost as they ran. This was such a sad thing to me. Then our principle walked in the class and told us to turn off the TV and so we did. After watching that I just could not concentrate on my schoolwork. I was thinking about what was going to happen and if my mom, dad, grandmother, and everyone else in my family were ok. I was thinking about the innocent people who got killed in the World Trade Centers, the public planes, and those who got injured in the Pentagon. Later on in the day I was watching the news and seeing what all happened. I was also watching people in the interviews who witnessed the attack. Then I remember seeing a mom, a brother, a wife, a child, and a father who were looking for their loved one and I began to pray fo them and pray that they found them and I prayed for those who we lost. I remember thinking that we have not lost anyone on this day, we have just gained more angels. I will never, in my life, forget this day. The bad guys thought that they could change our pride and dignity but they didn't, they made us have even more pride and more dignity and they made us even more proud to be Americans'. I love this country and I pray for the hurt families who lost loved ones. God Bless America. Today is September 11, 2002. My friend came over to me and said that she thought she herd two planes crashed. i dint think much of it. I know planes crash alot. THen in science my teacher told us about what really happened. i wasn't very compassionate and kind of put it off. THen next period in taskwe had the tv on. AS soon as i saw all that carnage it hit me. I immediatly started crying. i didnt even know anyone in newyork. It was so scary and i kind of thought something bad was going to happen that day. Right before lunch my parents came to pick me up. I was walking down the hall and saw my father standing outside the main office. I had never really like dmy dad that much but seeeing him stanidng there almost brought me to tears. i dont know why it just did. Then when i got into hte car i sat down. A few minutes later i tld my parents i loved them and started to cry. I havent told them i loved them in and very long time. when i got home i watched everything on tv. hten i went outside on my porch nad fell asleep on a lounge chaise. but before i fel asleep i, of course, scanned the skies for sigs of planes. Tell us your story: It was a normal day, in which the students were loudly chatting after class waiting for the school's morning annoucments to come on. The usual theme song was not heard, instead feared driven voices dictated what was on the screen. The class grew silent. Not a word was spoken, only mouth hung open out of dibelief. I remember feeling goosebumps form all over my body. It didn't matter that at that moment, it was thought to be an accident, It was bonechilling and I was scared. The bell rang to signial the move to the next class, yet none of us wanted to leave. As I entered my next class i noticed the T.V. on and change my seat so I could sit closer and listen to everything that was occuring.I learned that the Pentiagon was also hit. The images on the screen were of fire and desperation. Needlesstosay, the second plane hit and we knew it was no longer an acciedent. My theacher was in and out of the class room in an attempt to contact relatives she had in New York over her cell phone. The lines were all occupied and all she recived was a beeping sound on the other end. The principal came over the P.A. and instructed that the class would be extended until he notified other wise. I turned my attention back to the news and learned that there was still a plane unaccounted for. That stired even more fear in me. What if the other plane were on its way here? What about if it struck our Downtown where most of our business are located and the community colledge my boyfreind attends. The images on the screen became all too close. All flights were grounded. After 2 hours in the class i asked the theacher permission to go to the restroom. My highschool is partially open, and on my way to the restroom i had to walk over the roofless balcony that leads to it. The skies were baron of any activity and the streets were quiet. This was awkward because we are so close to the airport that we grew acustomed to the roar of the passing jets. To hear nothing was terrifying. Yet, I recall looking up at the sky in search of any air born object flying over Miami. I was terrified that I would witness the missing plane. The entire day was spent in disbelif in what was occuring in OUR America. As we passed from class to class I took my position closeist to the T.V. During the last class of the day with 30 minutes remaining of school, the principal came on the P.A. and announced that by orders from the School board, theachers were to turn off all t.v.. We all booed, turned off the t.v., and turned on the computer for the latest news. I read out loud to my class what was occuring. I recall trying to hold my tears back, but I don't know if I was Sucessful. I witness many other sheading tears of grief. That was a day that shook the world! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11th I dropped my children off at their elementray school and stayed for a fund-raising meeting. As I was leaving the school one of the teachers said a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers. I realized my brother had an office in the World Trade Center Marriott Hotel, and three of my cousins worked in the World Trade Center. I spent most of the day feeling useless in Florida calling back and forth to my mother and sisters and sister-in-law. My brother was in the Marriott at the time of the crash. He thought it was a small plane so as Director of Service he was organizing his staff and helping the injured people out of the hotel. He walked one injured woman out to an ambulence when he looked up and saw the gaping hole in the tower. As he was watching he saw the second plane crash into the south tower. He watched in horror as people jumped out of the windows, and ran in terror with the masses of people toward Battery Park as the massive cloud of ashe and debris chased after them. Fortunatly, my brother was pushed onto a Circle Line and eventually made it home to my parents house. One of my cousins did not go into work that day, he was playing a bussiness round of golf. And another one of my cousins planned to go into work late, after taking his pre-schooler to his first day of school. Unfortunatly, my cousin Loretta Vero (a corporate travel consultant) was in her office at American Express on the 94th floor of the North Tower. She was never recovered. Tommy was 25 and had lived and worked in Manhattan for the past two years - in his mind there was no greater city in the world! As my husband and I got ready for work that terrible day we had no inkling of the events that would change our lives. We were not overly surprised when the phone rang at 6:45 a.m., since we are recent transplants from the east coast, and friends and relatives often call then because of the time difference. But as I listened to my husband's voice I knew immediately that something was terribly wrong. I ran downstairs and grabbed the phone to talk to my son as my husband rushed to tune in the television. The horror we saw was beyond all comprehension, and the thought that Tommy was actually there threw me into a panic which only a mother can know. Our phone conversation was necessarily brief, and he assured me he was alright and would try to get back in touch a bit later. I fought back the tears and anger and depression (not always successfully) all that day and for all the days and weeks and months that followed. Every maternal instinct I had pushed me to get on a plane and go to New York to hug my son, but of course neither he nor my husband would even allow me to think of it. A year later I thank God every day that Tommy was spared at least physically, but I will never, ever forget.
