Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up around 6am Tucson time (9:00am east coast) and reached for the tv remote. I don't know why, I never wake to the television. Yet for some reason that morning I did. In my bleary eyed state I heard Peter Jennings say: "The attack on the World Trade Center" and I thought hazily it must be the anniversary of the 1993 bombing. After another moment he spoke of planes. Awake then, I watched in horror as the events unfolded. I heard the live feed about the Pentagon and the plane in Pennsylvania. I watched the towers collapse. I had lived in New York City for 17 years of my life and watching the collapse was the hardest. As each tower fell, I felt something in myself crash with it. I felt myself shaken to the ground. I have no idea what the weather was like that day. At some point I opened my door, let the cats in or out, breathed some air. The most awkward, odd experience was the most mundane. I had an appointment with my auto mechanic set for later that morning and I couldn't figure out if I should keep it or not. What was the right thing under the circumstances? Would they be open, should I move around, could I even drive? The events were so shattering it didn't seem possible that the mundane could continue. When the time came, I took my car in. The mechanic's radio blasted the news and around me people proceeded with routine tasks but with shocked looks and anger and hurt. I walked the half mile home. I remember the sun blazing hot and the sky empty of the constant planes that usually flew from the nearby Air Force base. No one was out. At home, I became glued to the television and stayed that way until the speeches started. Then, I couldn't take any more. I spent most of the days that followed alone until some friends came and got me and took me out It took me two weeks to track down all my New York friends and connections and they were all safe, all with stories to tell. I tried to write and tried to cry but only a few lines and a few tears seeped out. In the end I sat and watched - first tv and then the desert sky- wondering what the answer was. I think it was around 9:15 or so when I was walking to an adjacent office to use the fax machine. I saw my boss standing there talking to a fellow co-worker, telling him that he just heard that 2 planes had crashed into the World Trade Center. I briefly joined the conversation asking what happened. No one knew anything more at the time. My first thoughts were that the planes were of a small Piper Cub-type, the type you see at smaller airports. I don't know why that came to mind. I think it may have had something to do with the fact that I remember hearing that along time ago, a small plane had crashed into the Empire State building due to fog or bad weather. After sending out my fax, I walked back to my office. As I was walking back I started to think more about the planes ...and what were the chances of 2 planes crashing in such a short amount of time. Wanting to know more details, I quickly went onto AOL which I have on my computer at work. Soon I learned all the details . I then turned on my radio to see if I could get some live reports. A local Danbury AM radio station was actually transmitting live, the feed fom CNN, and I remember hearing Aaron Brown talking about the events as they unfolded. I sat at my desk stunned and in total disbelief as I listened to what was going on, and much of this live as it was actually happening. The crash of the plane at the Pentagon,the plane crashing in Pennsylvania, Aaron Brown breaking in to describe the South tower as it collapsed, then a short time later the North Tower. I was going back and forth between my radio and the computer to get the latest news. I recall Aaron saying somewhere that "one of the towers is completely gone". and at some point as I was looking at pictures that were finally starting to come up on the computer, there I saw...with my own eyes..one tower standing..one tower left amid a huge plume of smoke created when the first tower collapsed. It had not sunk in to my head yet that one of the towers had completely collapsed until I saw that image of the one tower left. By now, perhaps an hour had gone by, I could not work.The phones had stopped ringing as I'm sure most people were doing the same thing I was doing listening or watching. My wife who had just taken a job with a new company was out of town that day for training. and of all days, unavailable because she was in a classroom. I tried her on her cell phone but she had it turned off. She was only 30 minutes away,but I just wanted to hear her voice. I wouldn't end up talking to her until almost 11:00 AM By then her company, like many other companies were sending people home for fear that this might be a much larger attack. The schools were also letting out...Kids were were being picked up by their parents. My three kids were all in school that day (2 in 6th grade, 1 in 2nd grade) My wife after leaving work went to pick them up from school. I told her to just get home with the kids as quickly as possible..I just wanted everyone to be at home. I guess by noon time, It appeared that there were no more hikacked planes in the air. I could do little more that day than to talk to my wife and kids after they got home. I felt very very sad that day. It was such an extraordinary day weather wise too. To think that this could happen to us. and where Danbury is...just 60 miles north of New York City As I was driving home that afternoon after work. I felt like a robot just putting my car into drive and going home. I remember looking around at the other drivers on the highway with me, their expressions spoke volumes..I saw many weeping as they were driving. When I finally got home, I gave my wife and kids a long,very satisfying hug. It had been a brutal day. My teacher's wife had called in and told him that a plane had crashed into the first tower. He turned on the television in our room and there it was, smoke billowing out of the first tower and the kids in my class were like "what happened?was that an accident?was that some kind of government prank?" Then we resumed class but still had the TV on. Then, the second tower was hit and we all knew that this wasn't some prank that this was for real! The rest of the day was horrible. Everyone was worried, we didn't know what else to expect. When I got home I learned that a plane had gone down in Shanksville, Pa. That was so close to where I live, I couldn't believe it. Why was all this going on? It just didn't seem real. It is like this is all a dream and we are waiting for someone to wake us up, to tell us we were having a nightmare. I can't express my feelings for the families that had loved ones that died especially the children. I grew up without a father; I know how hard it can be?they are not alone. Tell us your story: I remember walking into my office at 8 o'clock that morning and looking up at the sky as the usual low flying planes were going in and out of the big airport near my office. It wasn't much, but it seems so stark to have stared at those planes right before everything happened. I was proofreading business cards at my part-time job in Morrisville, NC (its part time because I'm still in graduate school). Right at 9:00 BBC world news came on National Public Radio, and the first thing the announcer said was that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center Towers. My first thought was that it was some crazy person in a small private plane, like the one that crashed on the grounds of the White House a year or two before. Throughout the morning the story kept unfolding on the radio and all I could wonder was what would happen next. I kept trying to call everyone I know, which was hard because all the cell towers must have been tied up. Because my office was right next to Raleigh-Durham international airport, the sudden absence of very loud planes low overhead was like a deafening silence. I had heard the whole thing unfold on the radio all morning, both at work and in my car as I drove to the UNC campus for my Tuesday evening class. The first time I actually saw anything was near the student center on campus, where they had pulled out televisions and put them outside so everyone could see. The sudden addition of a visual image after six or seven hours of only hearing about it was incredible and horrifying. It seemed for a long time that we were never going to get back to a normal life, but amazingly its been almost a year today and life is basically the same as it has been. I hope we don't forget. I first learned of the catastrophe while driving down Interstate 264 on my way to work. I talked to my wife, who was at home and saw the events unfold on television. I then went to a hotel near my office to see televison for myself, which is where I saw the buildings collapse. It was the most shocking, appaling event that I had ever seen and it was the saddest day of my life. 2.Has your life changed since September 11th? As my life has changed, my belief in my fellow man has been degraded. I am suspicious of more people than ever, and I worry about the future of this country and our world and particularly for my daughter. 3. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? What should be remembered about September 11th is that never again can we rest easy and feel as secure as we did, knowing that there are people in the world that are as evil as those who commited this act. 4. Did you fly an American flag after the event? How have your feelings changed? We flew a number of flags around the house and do so from time to time. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Having just moved to Springfield, MO from San Francisco, CA in mid-July of 2001, I was looking for a job. I had just arrived at my then 2 1/2 year old son's new daycare center, La Petite Academy for his first day there so I could go on a job interview. As I was checking him in, the director of the center asked me if I had heard that an airplane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. My first thought was that it must have been a terrible accident with a small private jet. After leaving the the daycare center, I tuned my car radio to NPR, and of course I soon found out that it was not a small aircraft, but a commercial airliner. I couldn't imagine how such an "accident" could happen, and of course I soon understood that it was no accident. As I was driving on to my destination, I heard that a second airliner had gone into the other WTC tower. It is impossible to express my shock and disbelief. I will never forget that day, and I will forever think of it as the day our way of life here in the United States was irreversibly changed forever. I am sad for my child, and for all American children, that their future will be so very different from the past that their parents and grandparents enjoyed. I believe our way of life has been forever changed, although we have yet to experience all of those changes as they will not come all at once, but gradually. I do not say "the world changed" on September 11, 2001. The world did not change. What changed is that now we are more like the rest of the world than we were on September 10th. We were like innocents before then, thinking we couldn't be touched here at home. That isn't really true either, because I don't think we ever really thought about it at all. It never occurred to us that something like that would or could happen to us -- not here at home on our own soil. It was unthinkable. It still is. My father, mother and sister and I live in Alexandria, Va., just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. We selected a flight on American West Airlines scheduled to leave Washington?s National Airport at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 11. Early that morning, Dad, Mom, sister Rebecca and I took a taxi to the airport. Everything seemed remarkably peaceful. But the most notable thing that morning was the entrance of the first of our autumn air. After weeks of unbearable, sweltering summer humidity, right up through September 10, the morning of September 11 was absolutely gorgeous!! It was beautiful, spectacular sunshine, and the clearest, most refreshing air. The sunshine and autumn air put us in a good mood. Our plane was scheduled to depart at 9:00 a.m. They started boarding us about 8:20. We sat on the tarmac in a long line of waiting-to-depart airplanes awaiting our turn to take off. About 9:30 a.m., our plane finally lifted off towards the west, giving us a spectacular view of Washington. Mom and I were on the right side of the airplane, looking over the monuments gleaming in the morning sunshine. Dad and Rebecca were across the aisle from us on the left side of the aircraft. With their direct view of the Pentagon, Rebecca was pointing out to Dad the construction of a new bus platform at the Pentagon. As we flew over Dulles Airport to the west I remarked to my mother how it looked like it was closed -- actually looked somewhat like a ghost town. I could not see an airplane on the ground anywhere near the buildings and the hangars. I kept thinking I just wasn?t seeing things correctly. I kept looking and looking and never could figure out why I couldn?t see any airplanes. Soon we were over the mountains and on our way. About 45 minutes later the pilot came on the intercom to announce that the FAA had just grounded all domestic flights across the U.S. He noted that apparently there had been some suspected terrorist activity on the East Coast. He said our closest airport was Indianapolis and we would be landing there shortly. So -- just when has the FAA ever grounded all flights across the country? Simply unheard of! What on earth could lead to this extreme measure, I mulled over and over. Certainly this would all be resolved shortly. After we landed in Indy, Dad asked me on our way to the terminal how long I thought we would be there. We both agreed, no more than two hours, max. As we entered the terminal, all of the TV monitors had on CNN. We could tell that some part of Manhattan was on fire (we weren?t sure where and we had no idea why). Rebecca?s daughter Christine and Christine?s husband Jason, worked in mid-town Manhattan. Rebecca headed for the nearby phone bank and eventually heard from our sisters back home that Christine and Jason were OK and that they were on the train going north to Sleepy Hollow -- their home. At this time, we still did not know what had really happened. None of the passengers seemed to know the full story, despite the fact they were all on their cell phones. It really wasn?t until we got to our rooms in the Holiday Inn that we were able to concentrate on the news. I?ll never forget us sitting on the beds, watching CNN and the World Trade Towers collapse (over and over again). The sight of it was simply incomprehensible. I kept thinking we were watching a movie. It wasn?t until later they mentioned the plane hitting the Pentagon -- it hit at 9:40 a.m., just 10 minutes after we flew over! What a complete shock!! The news of the morning was just too difficult to absorb at once. We spent the next few hours touching base with family and friends. I called neighbor Kay to let her know we were not on the plane that hit the Pentagon and that yes, we would be back to take care of the cats. Our neighbor Martha left her job in Maryland to return home that morning and discovered many of our main roads were closed, incl. GW Parkway and I-395. She threaded her way home through back roads. Interesting in terms of reactions, Kay, Martha and my brother-in-law John, who also was sent home from work that morning, reported being physically nauseous, literally sick to their stomachs by the whole series of events. The ?war stories? continued for weeks afterwards from neighbors and co-workers who were forced to walk home that morning from the District when the subway and bus system were shut down. Dad and Rebecca must have been two of the last people in the world to see the Pentagon in one piece. I found out later from a news broadcast that indeed, Dulles Airport air traffic controllers had brought in all the planes off the tarmac while they were dealing with their runaway airplane - the American Airlines jet that left Dulles at 8:10 that morning, initially on its way to Los Angeles. The Dulles air traffic controllers were trying to deal with their airplane that was heading back east at the same time we were heading west. Thankfully, at that time we were completely unaware of all of the activity that was happening that morning. I was glad to be away from the East Coast and in the heartland. I would lay on my bed in the Holiday Inn and marvel at how our family had been whisked away at literally the last moment. So glad was I to be away from the East Coast at this time I was sure everyone in Indianapolis felt the same way. But Indianapolis rallied and responded to the crisis immediately. They sent police and fire fighters (by bus) to New York, and immediately started holding various charity drives and prayer services. This went on for days and probably weeks. I was so impressed. We were at the Holiday Inn for two nights and nearly three days (the airline put us up). There was nothing to do except visit the new CVS drug store next door. The America West passengers would cruise the aisles all day long. The hotel took good care of us. We were on our own for lunch but they provided breakfast and dinner. We spent a lot of time on the phone and watching CNN. Of the 54 airplanes that had been grounded and were still on the tarmac at the Indianapolis Airport, only one was an America West jet -- ours. Three days later from the time we arrived, we were back on that jet--one of the first planes out of there. Just before we took off, the Captain said we had to undergo a test -- we all had to sing ?God Bless America,? and those that didn?t know the words had to get off. We sang the song and had a good laugh. No one got off. After a plane change in Phoenix, we finally arrived in San Diego about 10:00 p.m., Thursday night, September 13. We had a wonderful time in San Diego. Dad got to his reunion and we enjoyed our time with him there. Only half of the expected attendees made it due to grounded flights all over the country. We did a lot of sightseeing, the highlight being a day trip to Coronado. What a spectacular place! Of course, the weather was perfect. The Coronado Hotel has a big ballroom where Dad said he and his buddies would dance on Saturday evenings when they were stationed at the San Diego Naval Station during WWII. This trip, the only disappointment for Dad and his squadron of Marine Corps pilots and crews was the cancellation of their scheduled return visit to the Naval Station and Miramar. Because of the terrorist situation, most military bases across the country were now closed to visitors. The following Monday it was time for Rebecca and I to negotiate the trip home. Mom and Dad were staying another week. Our intended destination airport, Washington National, was closed because of the terrorist events. America West found us a flight to Baltimore?s airport, called Baltimore-Washington Airport. We had never been there and didn?t know how we would get back to Washington on arrival, late Monday evening. Somehow, Rebecca found us a way home from the airport via train, subway and taxi. The taxi passed by the Pentagon and the gaping hole. We gasped at the dramatic site which news photos had not been able to convey. The construction lights blinded us as we came over the 14th Street Bridge. We arrived home (less than two miles directly south of the Pentagon), to the disconcerting drone of F-16 fighter jets flying overhead, nonstop to this day. I remember hearing something broadcasted about a fire at the World Trade Center in New York. I quickly stopped what I was doing and devoted my attention to the news on TV. I watched as the TV camera's showed the fire in one of the towers. They were still not sure what had happened. I immediatedly thought, Oh No, Bin Laden has done something. He had been in the news so much recently. Then much to my disbelief I saw the second plane enter the picture and fly into the 2nd tower. The feelings that I felt are undiscriblable. I guess if I had to come up with a word it would be anquish----for those in the towers, on the planes, their families and for all of us Americans. How dare anyone think that they could invade us like this and kill innocent people. I felt rage for some weeks after. I work at a high school and not knowing what was going to happen next I left for work early to see that was going on there. When I arrived the school had the TV on in the office and staff were watching. Next thing we heard was that the Pentagon was hit. Then the news was saying that another plane had turned around from Cleveland and was headed, they thought, to Washington DC. I remember saying that wouldn't it be something if the passengers on that plane could overtake the hijackers. It wasn't long after I made this comment that we heard that the plane had crashed in rural Somerset PA and that apparently the passengers had given their lives to save hundreds of others--What Heroes!!! It wasn't long then before the news began broadcasting from the NY and DC sights. It made me PROUD of our country and citizens to hear of the sacrifice many many men and women had made to save others. We tried to keep a low key for the sake of the students, we didn't want to needlessly alarm them. The administration did call for a Lock-Down and placed police at the doors for extra precautions. We have numerous parents call in to tell their child that they were ok. Some came a took their child home. I felt very safe here, at the high school, and couldn't quite figure out why some people panicked. But I guess we all handled this tragic news in our own way. It is now a year later and I still can't get the image of the Trade Center Towers falling. I just pray that God will, in his time, rid this world of these evil, power hungry people. Oh, if we could all just live in peace. I feel compassion for those in this world who know nothing but war, hunger, and death. This world is such a beautiful place and is meant ALL to live in peace. I pray that God will give our nation the wisdom to do the right things so that this will never happen again. Tell us your story: It was a normal day as any other day for me but today I decided to come in early becasue we were going to be busy at Dun & Bradstreet. I logged into the cue and noticed the phones were just lighting up with customers. I figured I could make some money early before everyone else got in and be ahead of the game. One call came in from brooklyn and originally being from New York, I love talking with customers from there. We were going over the basics and all of a sudden my customer started cussing as he saw and I heard the sound of destruction. I asked what was going on and he had said a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. I am thinking it was a small prop plane but with the Sound of all the cussing from his office, I knew it was much bigger. At that time the phone went dead and all those calls to our office had completely stopped. The only voices I heard were from co-workers coming into work letting others know what they heard on the radio up here. When management came, they told us that we had offices on the 11th floor and that put a concern to me as well. I started calling my friends up there but everything was busy and I couldnt get through. I'm sure several stories start out this way. I was doing my usual routine of answering phone calls from IT people and traders from the Wall St. world. I don't recall the exact time, but I know it was about 10 minutes before the first plane hit. I was on the phone with Mike from Cantor Fitzgerald. I even saved my book, which I used to take notes in, that shows that he was the last person I spoke to that day. I had spoken with Mike previously. He knew my name as I answered the phone and we started off with our usual conversation. If I recall correctly, Mike was one of the lead traders at Cantor Fitzgerald. The "hello's", and "how are you?s" made it seem like it was going to be just another day at my firm. I recall, he was having a problem with his trading software which he used to trade stocks. He was trying to sweep the market on a stock, but the sweeping function wasn't working for him. I told him to try doing this, and try doing that until suddenly he said that he had to go. Our phone conversation was cut short and didn't last long. He said he would give me a call back because ?something was going on?. I wasn't sure what he was referring to. After hanging up the telephone, I looked up. I saw a couple of people with hands over their mouths. Some other people were still on the phone with clients not knowing what had happened. When I looked at the television, my initial thoughts told me "everything is going to fine, just stay calm." It was very hard to keep those thoughts in my head considering the situation. As we watched the television, people made phone calls to family and friends informing those that we were alright. I called my mother and father separately, just to let them know that I was fine and we were assessing the situation. Then the second plane was coming in. You could see it on the television. You knew the people who were in the tower were not going to make it out. You knew the people on the plane were not going to survive. It had to be a mistake. Everything about this day is just a nightmare. It was complete shock and disbelief that someone was flying a plane in to a building on purpose. Then it hit. The explosion was so powerful that I remember hearing it and feeling the vibrations. At that moment, the loud-speaker over our heads came on as someone was announcing the evacuation of our building. I put down my pen, grabbed my personal belongings and started out the door. I left my book in place which still had Mike from Cantor Fitzgerald written in it. But strangely, it didn't occur to me that Mike was in the WTC until our office was downstairs where people were talking about who they knew in the WTC. Someone said Canto Fitzgerald was there on the 80th floor. That's when I realized, I was not going to hear from Mike again. I don't know if any emotions hit me at this realization aside from shock. I don't think there was room in my mind for anything else as I was trying to pay attention to the activity going on around me. I just can?t imagine what is must?ve been like for Mike or anyone else at Cantor Fitzgerald. When I got there one of my classmates asked if I had heard what was going on, I had no idea what he was talking about, but as soon as I entered my classroom for Child Psychology and saw the television I began to get nervous. At that point, the second plane hadn't hit and it wasn't clear whether this was an attack or an accident. My professor chose to turn off the television and have class. By the time, class was over it was very clear to everyone that America was under attack. My school came together like they never had before. It was my senior year there and this was the first time that I had felt like Anna Maria College was a community. We gathered in the Performing Arts Center and watched the tragedy unfold on the screen there. My sense of community was enhanced when I was suddenly bombarded by people making sure I was okay because I had gotten married to a sailor only 5 months before. My friends and professors knew that, at that moment, he was on deployment, but no one knew where he was and they were all praying for his safety. Now, one year later, my husband is on another deployment. This one much different from the one of last year. He is fighting in the war against terrorism along with thousands of other military members. I pray for him and all others, as well as everyone who was affected by the attacks that took place one year ago today. It breaks my heart to know that there are so many people that have lost loved ones as the result of senseless acts of violence. It does not particularly make me feel any better that we are fighting back because no matter how long we fight we will not get back those who were lost, but maybe ridding the world of as much evil as possible will make the world a better place for the children that my husband and I will someday bring into this world. I hadn't had the TV or radio on that morning, so I knew nothing of it. My friend and I talked about it, but at that point we didn't know it was an attack. We thought it was just an accident. As I sat in my second class that day, my professor began talking to us about what had taken place. She was so shaken by it, that she canceled class for the rest of the week. As we stood there, we heard a loud boom, we thought oh no not another attack. This year I have my first Grandson Logan. He wasn't alive when 911 hit; but his life will be changed forever because of it. His Dad, Mom, Grandmom and Grandfather will relate stories to him about how life "used to be" - while he tries to understand the life he lives now. Freedom means many things to many people; different perspectives. For my Grandson; freedom will be the definition he gets from those he cherishes in his life. 911 will be the underlying life lesson he will learn. To live in a "free" world does NOT come without a promise. A promise from him to protect that world no matter who he decides to "become". To be the best you can be; to help others no matter the sacrifice: the legacy of those who did will live on in my Grandson. WE MUST NEVER FORGET; WE MUST NEVER BE LESS VIGILANT, WE MUST HONOR OUR LIVES IN EACH AND EVERY WAY WE CAN. We must take strength from those who gave their lives and strenthen our lives today with the belief that there IS a better world. All of us can make a difference. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I don't have a "first hand" story. I did not lose any loved ones or personal friends. My boss was in New York City on business that day. We were so worried because we didn't know how close he was to the towers. We couldn't get through on his cell phone or to the hotel where he was staying. All we could do was watch the news coverage in horror and disbelief! A friend in New York finally called us to let us know our boss was fine and that his meeting wasn't scheduled first thing in the morning. Thank God! After I knew my boss was safe all I wanted to do was be with my daughter and my family. Thats just what I did. One year later I still can not believe that this happened in America, in this day and age. I thought this was something we only read about in history books or that my father and his generation and beyond had experienced. I am still angry. I want those responsible to be punished. Their day will come that I know for sure! They will be judged. I grieve for all those we lost and the families they left behind. The saddness is almost too much. I can not understand how people can be so evil. I pray that they change their ways and realize how wrong they are. I pray that as a nation we will heal. I pray that our leaders make the right choices. I pray that we will never have to endure this type of senseless tragedy again. We all have such different perspectives now and our priorities have shifted. May we all take nothing for granted and find peace and love in our hearts and lives.
