As a wife of a retired Air Force Security Police Officer. I have served this country with him for many years. But that Tuesday morning I truly became an American. Always moving from place to place with the Air Force not being able to put down roots, growing up in England I had always called there home. That changed that day. NO MORE. My HOME is here in California. I fly MY American Flag with pride and gratatude to those who lost thier lives and to those who have to go on without them. I can truly say that I am an American now. My mother who still lives in England called me that day and cried on the phone with me, no more understanding what had happened than I did. I did try to sheild my four year old from the event and as she asked question I answered them in a way that she could understand. Today I sent in Red White and Blue cookies with her to school. I do not want this day to be a day of celebration. I never want her to forget what happended but I also do not want her to be afraid . We have become a better country, a more compasionate country but not a weak country. We will continue to fight for her and love her. Never letting this type of tragady to befall us again. Thank you. My father served in the Army attached to the 82nd Airborne. We had preplanned his funeral, all military. He was bury in his uniform and all the flowers were done in red, white and blue. As a memento to all in attendance, flag pins and flag keychains were given. As I siad this had been preplanned for a year, why this day that such a horrible thing to happen to so many. Tell us your story: I am a social worker and at that time of that homeless clinic and I was attending a client when he told me there was a terrorist attack in New York and the world trade centers buildings were burning up and collapsing to the ground. We were all in awe! My boyfriend now of one year since 9-8-01 brought down the tv and all the employees gathered to see it in our conference room. We could not believe our eyes, had our mouths wide opened and were in total shock that people were jumping from the windows plummeting to their deaths to avoid being burnt alive. Then tower 1 collapsed, followed by tower 2. All of our eyes began to swell up in tears, some employees had family in NY and they became extremely nervous began calling and could not get through regular phones lines or cell phones. Approximately 2 hours later the firalarm in our building went off and we were all very nervous, but evacuated like we had done previously during practice runs. We are in the downtown Miami area where there are government buildings (courthouse,jail)and those buildings were being evacuated but we did not because our patients / clients need our services and it is a private non-profit organization.. After this passed I began seeing alot of clients which were born in NY or lived there for a long time looking for a shoulder to cry on and someone to console them. I am glad I was there to comfort them and empower them when they most needed me the most. As a social worker my duty is to help others help themselves, in other words empower them. And that's exactly what I did. I know I will remeber this day for the rest of my life eventhough I have never been to NY or know anyone who lives there. As I was watching TV at 8:45 this morning my eyes sweeled up like they did exactly one year ago when I saw all of those families suffering and all of those children born without fathers. Thinking and wondering what I would have done if my husband had perished during these attacks and I was expecting his child. Thank heavens I am a very positive person and always look ahead in the worst of adversities and always see light at the end of the tunnel. I guess that's why I am in this profession of social work because of my attitude and way of talking with people. We have many students whose parents work at the Pentagon so the day became a shambles very quickly in some parts of the school. The first my students and I heard about the strike was when the principal came over the PA. He told us that there had been terrorist strikes in New York and into the Pentagon. He encouraged us to send any students to student services who so requested. My partner and I decided that we would try to maintain as normal a class as we could, given that some of our students would be coming and going constantly. The one memory that sticks out in my mind is the number of 17 and 18 year old boys, many of whom we 6'2" and taller, who were crying in fear. They had parents who worked in the Pentagon, grandparents who were flying on that day and family members who were in fire and rescue groups. I do not think I ever want to see that sight again. Young men of that age should not be crying in school in front of their peers. After school, I remember doing something else rare for me and that is sitting in front of the television non-stop for the rest of that day and all of the next as that cancelled school in Fairfax County on the 12th (MY BIRTHDAY!! - not a good celebration last year). I admit to viewing my own memories as insignificant compared to the way so many people must remember this day. I feel in some way detached, and almost silly sharing my own personal pain. After all I wasn?t there, I didn?t lose anyone. There is however something different about this tragic day. It seemed to be the day that affected the world. Even the people who didn?t lose a loved one could feel the grief. It was as if there was so much pain that it was split between everyone so that we could all help each other to heal. So these are my memories, still clear in my mind, the way I experienced it. Like many people I was asleep when the first planes hit. I was ignoring the phone ringing in my room until the answering machine cut on and I could hear my mom?s voice telling me to call her. ?Don?t drive into school today Amy? she said. Half awake I dialed her number at the hospital where she works. She told me that terrorists had attacked the Pentagon and the World Trade Centers, and that I should turn on the TV. She told me she had talked to my Dad and that he was fine. I hung up and started to watch the news. It really did look just like a movie, people running down the streets, buildings on fire, and then the second plan hit the other tower. I decided at that point to get on the computer and see if my Dad was online. He told me that he could see the smoke outside of his window from his office building located close to the pentagon. In the background on the news I could hear them saying they weren?t sure if there would be more and I was scared for my Dad. He said he would have to wait a few hours before he tried to leave or he wouldn?t be able to get out with all of the traffic. I told him I would see him when he got home, and I went back watching the TV. My Mom called and said she would be late coming home because they needed all the doctors and nurses to stay at the hospital to help in case there were a lot of victims. She ended up coming home on time, most of the victims where of course beyond help so the hospital staff wasn?t needed as expected. I can remember the relief I felt when my whole family came home that day, even if I knew they where safe. I felt awful for the people whose parents never showed up. For the next few days I watched an extreme amount of TV. It was mostly the same images over and over. The planes crashing into the buildings repeated constantly on every station. I had seen them a million times but I stayed tuned in, like many people I guess I just was in such disbelief that I needed to see it was real. Over the next few days we herd from our extended family in Australia, they sent us touching e-mails and letters wishing us, and the country well. I found the support people offered from all over the world to be very moving. I think everyone felt this day, each in their own way. I awoke this morning to a phone call from my mother. It was about 8:30AM. She said that two planes had just crashed into the World Trade Center buildings in New York City. So I got out of bed and turned on the television not expecting this incident to be that big of a deal. When I turned on the television and saw the two towers with some fire in them, it really didn't look that bad from the angle that I was seeing it from. But then, they showed a tape of the second plane flying into one of the towers and that's when I realized how bad it was. That is when they identified the two planes as 767's, which are very large jets. At that time the people on television were also saying that it was probably a terrorist act. Then, the television station said that a plane had just crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Shortly after that, they then showed the two World Trade Center towers crumbling down to the ground. But wait, there was more! Another plane was then reported to have crashed just outside of Pittsburgh. Overall, the four planes were carrying roughly 300 passengers, who were all killed. They think that the terrorists are some rebels of Osama Bin-Laden, a Saudi Arabian who hates the United States. What a day of terror! All day I have felt sick, sad, and angry at what has happened. All of these innocent people had no reason to die, but these terrorist bastards feel it necessary to perform these evil acts. I was at work, walking through the office, when I heard the receptionist page me to say I had a phone call. I walked into an empty office to take the call. It was my husband to say that 2 planes had hit the World Trade Center and they think it was an act of terrorism. It didn't really sink in until I started walking back to my cubicle and realized what my husband had said. I then ran back to the area where my desk was and yelled to my co-workers what had happened. We turned the radio on to the local news station. I started hearing reports that there was a hijacked plane over Washington DC. Then I heard the dreadful news that the Pentagon was hit. A feeling of panic came over me as I thought about my father who worked at Ronald Reagan National Airport. I tried to call him to ask him to leave. I made 3 or 4 attempts and no one answered the phone. Finally, someone picked up the phone and I asked to speak to Danny and the voice on the other end told me he was on vacation that week. That was when I fell apart. Then, I tried to call my dad at home. No one answered. Finally, I reached him. He had just woken up and had no idea of what was going on. I sobbed on the phone to him and told him I was greatful that he was alright. I think he thought I was going to go into labor right there. My supervisor came through the office and told everyone to go home. I recall the eerie drive to my sister-in-law's house to pick up my 2 1/2 year old son. I felt like Henny-Penny, waiting for the sky to fall. When I arrived, he was eating lunch with his cousin and they were talking about their next trip to Disney World and how they weren't going to be affraid of the characters. It was so peaceful and innocent. I felt calmness coming over my entire body. I made my way over to my parents house, where my sister and her husband were along with my husband. I hugged my Dad like I've never hugged him before. I know how horrified I was even though my family was safe and sound. I can only imagine how all the people felt; the one's who lost family and friends and co-oworkers or escaped the callapsing building or the people who watched in horror as people jumped from the building or the ones who spoke to their loved ones just moments before they met their deaths. She came in and said a plane had crashed into one of the Towers of the World Trade Center. We all grabbed our radios and jumped on CNN.com. Information was slow to get. I had been listening to my CD player in my car, and was unaware that anything had happened. I sat down and my jaw dropped to the floor. My first instinct was to call my family that lived in Potomac, MD. Just to make sure no one was traveling near the Pentagon that morning. Luckily no one was travelling that day. Our family business is wholesale novelty, carnival and party supplies. We could not believe the amount of phone calls we received for patriotic merchandise since September 11. We have always carried American Flags and other items, but the response to show patriotism was overwhelming, here in St. Louis. We supplied the Baseball Cardinals with 50,000 American Flags that were given out at an evening game. Subsequently, other teams called our store asking for flags as well. Unfortunately we were out of stock and frantically looking for vendors who had them in stock! Ever since that time, our store has kept a patriotic section out all year long. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My mother called me at work at 8:55 am to tell me a plane had hit the world trade center. At the time I was thinking why would a small plane be flying in NY city? And how could it not see the WTC? I had no idea she was talking about a jumbo jet. By the time we got this part clarified, the second plane had hit. We'd decided even before the word "attack" had been used by the media that this was not a coincidence. After that all hell broke loose. There were stories floating around that government building were being evacuated -- and since many of my friends work for the federal govenment in D.C., I was worried. There were even stories that a fuel storage facilty near me was under heavy guard because of terrorist threats. My office mate was trying to reach her family by phone, they were in NYC, and of course, all circuits were busy. By time the plane hit the pentagon and the other crashed in PA, we were all very scared, worried, and felt helpless. It was worse for the people who had families in NYC. My office mate had two brothers that were firemen and two family members that were police officers. Needless to say that when the towers collapsed she was beside herself. By that afternoon the sky was deathly quiet. We were all glued to our radios trying to get more information. I couldn't reach my friends in DC, and my office mate couldn't reach her family in NY. On a whim (I guess), my 21 year old son stopped by the office on his way home from work. All I could do was hug him tell him how glad I was just to be with him right at that moment. He was determined to go the NY with a group of volunteer firemen to help with, what we all thought at the time, would be a massive rescue effort. I was certainly proud that he wanted to help but as his mother I was scared to death. I also had the possibility of the activation of the draft looming in the back of my mind and I was terrified that my only son might be called to serve. From 9/11/01 to 9/11/02 it has been a long year. My son has since moved to another city just an hour away. I took 9/11/02 off -- I don't know why ... I just did. My son called me and asked me to come to his place ... just because. We spent the afternoon just being together. When I went back home my daughter (who had been shielded from most of this because she was so young) and my mother and I went to church. I did watch Peter Jennings from the time he started broadcasting at 8:30 am until he ended his broadcast at 11:30 pm. It's still too much to take in even one year later. I can't imagine how the people who were in the thick of it and survived are making it. I pray for them and for all of us. As the train arrived at the station and the doors opened I felt a tremble. Not knowing what had happened I started to go up the stairs entering the world trade center to catch the path train. A woman started yelling OH MY GOD. I said what happened? She was crying and sacred. Again I said what happened. She replied I think a bomb went off in the building or something and you can't come in this way. I said to myself well then I have to go to the street. I headed up the stairs and debree come down. I leaned on the rail of the steps and went out to the street from cortlandt station. I then saw the first plane had already entered the building. I thought it was just an accident. I looked up and saw the plane and the fire coming out of the building. I kept looking up in disbelief and then the second one hit the next tower. I couldn't move my body form where I was and felt terrified. I stood there crying and saying OH MY GOD what is this. This is not an accident. I kept looking and listening to other people yelling and crying. I still could not move my body. I felt frozen there. I started to look up at the people that were jumping out of the tower and thought it was debree but it wasn't. I cried even more as I heard their bodies hit the pavement. Suddenly someone bumped into me and then I was able to move myself from the spot I was in. I tried to find some place to go to get out of the way of everything in my way. I went into a building and stood against a wall. I then realized that this building had glass windows all over the place. I knew that this wasn't safe and ran out. I started telling people what are you doing standing here. Get out and run somewhere for safety. But no one moved. I started to run but didn't know which way to go. I looked around and started toward the ferry. I just wanted to go home.I got to the ferry only to find out that the boat had stopped running as well. I was scared that something else was going to happen. I stood against the wall of the terminal and prayed that this would be over soon. I thought that what would happen now was that the people trying to take the same boat would stampeed on top of me. Well I must say that everyone was just as nice as could be. The doors opened and we got on the boat. When the boat started to pull out of the pier I looked out of the windows of the ferry only to see the tower totally ingulfed in smoke. I kept looking and said to someone where are the towers and they said crying they are gone. I couldn't see clearly any more because the tears blured my vision. Everone on the boat were trying to use their cell phones and not many were getting through to anyone. Well we finally reached S.I. I felt better that I was close to home. When I got off the boat to the terminal to take the bus We were told to just get on the bus and don't worry about paying. The bus driver kept saying come on just get on the bus. This was and is the most horrific thing that I can say I have ever seen or want to see again. Years ago I decided that there was far too much violence in the world for me so I just disconnected myself from it and went about my life. However, on September 11,2001 my life as well as millions of others was changed forever even if we didn't want it to be. I was working around my house, doing the usual cleaning and straightening when I received a call from my daughter asking me if I had my television on. I told her no, as I usually didn't when I was there by myself, and she told me to turn it on now, the United States had just been attacked. I guess it didn't really register at first what she was telling me but I turned my TV on and when I did, they were showing the towers crashing and the people running and screaming. It was like something from a bad movie and all I could do was cry. I cried all day off and on for the people that I knew had to die in all of this and for our country and what it would do to us. I knew from that point on, none of us would ever be the same again. I guess in some ways, it was a good change for us because I think we all became more aware of one anothers feelings and of telling one another how we felt, but the sadness I felt then, and will always feel in my heart will never go away. September 11, 2001 is a day I want to always remember and forget all at the same time. Tell us your story: I was working at Burger King when the Supervisor came in and said that America was under attack...that he had just seen it on tv. Then he left and came back and said the 2nd building at wtc has been struck by the plane. He spoke Bin Laden's name from the very beginning believing he was behing it. When I got home that afternoon my boyfriend who later became my husband was watching re-runs of the destruction on tv. He was very angry and upset. He was thinking maybe his son that was in the Marines would be called on to defend his country. I was just numb with shock when I saw that re-run of those buildings falling down and killing our fellow human beings. I cried all week. I want to cry now when I think of it. No human has the right to take another life-except it be for dire self-defense! I believe Bin Laden used our national 911 emergency number to make us to never forget him, and that is granting him way too much power. He takes so much pleasure in his mass murderings and he is flattered by all the attention the whole world has been giving him. Shortly after second period started I was called to Mrs. Hummel's (our high school principal) office. She had a news special on her tv of the first attack at New York City. I could hardly believe what I saw on the screen. Then came the second attack and then the pentagon. By this time several staff members were in the office watching in disbelief. Teachers were permitted to turn the news coverage on in their class rooms. Some did and others did not. As the school's guidance counselor I thought that I should get out and see how our students and staff were handling the situation. As I walked down the halls I saw faces that were sad, angery and confused. I was standing outside of the library when I saw several elementary teachers coming into the hallway with concerned looks. Our building was just shocked by the impact of flight 93 about two miles from the school. I quickly went to the elementary and followed the group of teachers and Mrs Tipton, principal, outside. We all looked around and saw a black cloud above the trees beyond the school. No one was sure what it was, but all were very concerned that it was related to the other attacks. I said that I thought it was near Frankie Reed's place where he works on cars and maybe a gas can exploded. We all returned to the building and waited for about twenty minutes to hear that infact it was a plane that crashed near our school. Almost immediately parents started to come to the school to pick their children and take them home. We weren't sure if roads were closed or what. Our two principals, Mrs. Tipton and Mrs. Hummel did a great job keeping everyone updated and calm. By this time, local and state law officers were involved and encouraged the school to stay in session. We did go on with classes even though parents continued to come and pick up their children. I had a fourth period guidance class with seventh grade that I went to see many sad and concerned faces. Each time a student's name was called several girls started to cry. It was obvious that we could not have class today. We watched the news coverage and to calm those who were very upset. So many questions were being asked it a real time of soul searching. I asked the students if they wanted me to pray and the said yes. As I prayed I asked God for guidance, safety and direction in this time of dire need for our country. The bell rang for fifth period and I slowly walked down the stairs talking to students and staff as I went. I stopped at Mrs. Ware's class of sixth graders and they were very upset like the rest of us. We answered questions, tried to calm fears and once again I prayed for the situation and God's intervention. By the time lunch period came, over half of our students were gone. The entire staff was talking to students and trying to calm them and ourselves as well. By the time 3:00 pm came there were only about twenty five students left in school. It was the most moving day in my twenty three years at Shanksville. The next day and many more to follow were filled with long talks with students and staff about some of life's most important issues. I prayed with more students and staff during this tragic time than in all the years that preceeded it. I thank God for the opportunties to share his love and direction to those in need.This was a very humbling and soul searching time and it continues on...... school. I today,one year later, rember exactly were I was and what I was doing when I found out about the planes crashing into the wtc. I was in my physics class my senior year of high school. We had about 5 minutes left of class when a teacher came to the door and told my teacher what had happend. We endid up finish our leson because we were told that it seemed like it was just an acident and we only had five minutes left of class. So, when class was over I emediatley went to my next class were the tv was already on. Everyone in my class just sat and staired at the tv. I remember watching as the second plane it and i remember watching all of the chiling images of the people and of the towers colapsing. To this day I can see them in my mind as if they happened yesturday. I ended up skiping lunch to watch the news about what was going on. Every class I had after that was silent and watching tv. I don't think I have ever been a class were everyone was fixated on what was transpiring. We were all in shock. I had never thought about us being the target of terrorism. Then we were and it changed me. It made me reflect on what America was to me. You see I am am Eagle scout and I have always loved america. But that night the night of 911 I thougt about what had trispired through out the day. And I reflected on what it was to be an american. And I looked at a picture that was given to me when I obtained the rank of eagle scout. It was a picture of an eagle flying high with an american flag waving in the background. And that is when I realzed what a great country I lived in. One were we are free to soar as the eagle soared in that picture. And why are we free well it is becuase of the contry that flys the flag that was in that picture over it. The american flag. So that picture simboled to me what america was and will always be. It is the freedom to soar as high as you posibly can just like the eagle and it is all because the flag in the bacground the flag of freedom THE AMERICAN FLAG. It was my boyfriend's birthday, so we decided to take the morning slow to celebrate. I heard something about a plane crash on the radio while primping in front of the mirror. I went into the living room and started flipping through the cable news channels. CNN was showing the first plane crash into the tower. Then they broke to live footage. As I watched that second plane hit, I started yelling to my boyfriend, "Something really big has happened. Something terrible. Come look. Look!!" He couldn't believe it. Horrified, I sat in absolute silence with tears streaming down my cheeks. Lists of friends and family ran through my head. Could anyone be in New York? Did Paul's sister ever get that investment banking job? Is my dad in the air right now, ready to fly into a building? I was thrilled when I finally got in touch with my family members, and figured out that no one I know was hurt in attack, and automatically felt horrible for those who suffered loss with this. I also felt a little guilty because it wasn't me, and helpless because I couldn't do anything about it. I called in sick to work. Then I started pondering why. Was it some weird technical glitch with air traffic control? Maybe something left over from Y2K? None of those seemed plausible. When the word "hijacked" was mentioned, fear crept into my heart. What if they have bio-weapons? What if they hit all of the nation's capital or large cities? I live in a capital city, so does my mother. What if trains are hijacked, or trucks filled with explosives are going down the street right now? (I drove around the city paranoid for weeks after the attacks. It took me a while to get out of the house again, for fear of being attacked in a movie theater or a mall.) CNN mentioned Pennsylvania and the Pentagon next. Fear turned to anger. My weird coincidence theory was blown out of the water. Who could do this? Who could be capable of murdering so many innocent people at once? I cried and cried. I still have a good, hard cry at least once a month. Being an Air Force brat, I grew up on "heightened alert." You didn't dress like an American when going off base in Germany, lest a terrorist kidnap you. You didn't drive an American car. You always looked around for suspicious people. Nuclear war was in the air, and it sometimes seemed stifling. When Daddy plays wargames for a living, war seems iminent. We left the Frankfurt airport one day before terrorists blew the lobby to bits. But never could I have expected anything like this. I couldn't expect the outpoor of love and patriotism afterward, either. Being part of Gen-X, patriotism always seemed like something put in a can and listed on sale every Fourth of July. Now I know better. I talk to my parents every week now, and visit my father (who is only an hour away) much more often. I started volunteering at the humane society, because I don't know if I'll be here tomorrow, and I want to do something that makes me feel good while I'm around.
