Berry Berenson Perkins was the most beautiful person on the earth and the past year has been very difficult for me and for all of us who knew her. She was a true original with a joie de vivre like no one else. I was friends with her for 20 years. She told me on several occasions that she felt we were soul sisters and that I should think of her as my family. Our backgrounds were totally different. She came from a society family in England and went to boarding school in Switzerland. She moved to New York City when she was only about 20 years old and immediately became and "It" girl there. I was brought up in the suburbs of Los Angeles and attended public school. I went to college at San Diego State University and worked in tv news upon graduation. Althought we came from different worlds, we were the same person in our emotions and relationships and shares so much in common! We became instant friends when I showed up at her house to babysit her two sons, who she absolutely adored. She had left a message for me the day before saying she was coming to LA and wanted to get together that night. I knew the minute I heard the plane was from Boston that she was on that plane. The last time Berry was in Los Angeles, I was volunteering at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles with my dog who does therapy work there for the sick and dying kids. She wanted to come with me and help and when I told her the kids needed art supplies, she ran out and bought bags and bags of crayons, paints and everything they would need to brighten their lives. She was like that, always thinking of someone else. I can't bear the thought of living the rest of my life without her. I know that heaven is a much better place with Berry in there. She probably has God and all the angels dancing on the tables and singing everyday! I did not have class until three in the afternoon that day and had planned to sleep in late. When I heard a loud pounding noise followed by the voice of my roommate telling me to turn on the news, I did not think much of it. Half asleep, I shuffled around for the television remote and lazily flipped through the various channels on the news. Half asleep and still unsure of just what I was looking for, I turned off the television after being unable to find my roommate on it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had reported to work at the Fire Department where I worked as an EMT. The morning was slow and we had only had one run that morning so we were watching television. The program we were watching was interrupted by news of the first plane going into one of the towers. I remeber sitting there with my partner and thinking of not only the lives of the victims of this catastrophe but of the fellow public safety personnel that must respond. We sat there and thought how we would respond to the emegency and bantered around different ideas. We also received calls from other EMS agencies that had seen the tradgedy on the news. Iwas talking with a friend on the phone when the second plane hit and I remeber being almost catatonic at the site on the tv. The phone fell from my face and I felt my heart just ache at what I was watching. After the initial shock died down I remember this overwhelming anger that gripped me , as I assumed that this was now an attack and not just a random accident. I was so mad at those who would take human lives so senselessly. I felt the pain of a nation as we sat and watched the resue efforts and watched the following horror of the day unfold. As we are near an airport we were alerted to our response plans for any possible situations that might unfold in our area and to initiate our plans for response in the county. I like many other americans sat by the television when I could, unbelieving of the pain and suffering one human would inflict upon another. I wept for those who perished and were injured, I cried out for vengeance against those who initiated such a vicious attack, but most of all I felt pride for the response of my fellow EMS, Police and Fire personnel who responded so valiantly without regard for themselves. It is something we do without thought and usually omly those of us in this work understand it. I raced out of bed, like every morning, just in time for to get to school. Around the time the first plane hit the north tower, I had arrived at school. Of course, it had only been a matter of minutes, so nobody really knew anything was going on. I hung out and talked to my friends in the commons until the first bell rang. My first period class was Earth Science. I vaguely remember some commotion, but nobody ever said what was going on. We had a dreaded test so first period pretty much just went along as every other day. After first period, I had study hall in the commons, where I sat down and started talking to my friend, Tamie. There was a lot of commmotion going on and I was really confused. Tamie said something about how she was driving for driver's ed and heard on the radio that some planes crashed into the twin towers. At this time, it had only been maybe an hour or so after the second plane hit and nobody knew what was going on. The whole second period I was just confused and still didn't underdstand what was really going on and what this all meant. They had turned on the TV and I watched over and over again planes hitting the twin towers and live footage of the smoke coming out of the building. I also watched as both of them collapsed inward and information about one plane that hit the Pentegon and another that crashed in Pennsylvania. By the end of second period, there was buzz about what was going on. Some people were saying it was a declaration of war from some other country, others were still saying it was an accident and some were still in a daze like me. Honestly, nobody knew. Not even National Security. During third period, we just pretty much went on with everything normally. Fourth period helped clear my confusion. It was history class with Mr. T. He flipped on the TV and explained the whole situation with as much info as he knew. Then we kept watching more information unravel on TV. Everything was happening so fast. By the end of the day we were aware that it was a terrorist attack and they already had some suspects. The next 24 hours and days and even weeks were a blur. We had our supsect--Osama bin Laden. Surrounding buildings also collapsed. I watched time after time of the two towers being hit and collapsing to the point where it made me sick. I looked through my pictures of my trip to Washington D.C. and New York that I had taken in July 2001---less than two months before. This is where September 11th really hit me. My trip. I had gone to Pennsylvania (where one plane crashed), I remember one of the last things I saw leaving the D.C. area was the Pentagon (where another plane crashed), and I definately remember those towers that I have in almost every picture of New York I own. It's kind of ironic, the whole time I was in NY, I really didn't know what the twin towers were. Also, I stayed at the hotel on the grounds of the Newark, NJ airport (where one of the planes left). Almost every time the subject comes up, my mom says "what if it had happend two months earlier when you were there?" I thank God every day that I wasn't. My only wish was that nobody else was either. We talked a lot about what happned in history class in the following days and even now, more than a year later. I don't think I'll ever forget a single moment of that day. Strange how it affected me in such a weird way even though I knew nobody even close to being there that fateful day. But it did. Every time I see those awful images of the towers collapsing, hear more talk about "terrorism", or even think of something as simple as New York City in general, I have to stop and remember to breathe. Tell us your story: Everyone remembers where they were on certain dates: the day Kennedy was shot, when Pearl Harbor was attacked, and for my generation it will be where we were on September 11th. I remember where I was like it was yesterday. I had just come from the doctor?s office because I had conjunctivitis, and I went into my 1st block with only a few minutes left. Everyone was watching the TV, entranced. I thought they were watching a movie or documentary, so I kept on asking what they were watching. I saw all the smoke and chaos about the World Trade towers, but it didn?t really register. Everyone told me to hush, so I didn?t know what was going on. The bell to 2nd block rang, so I left my class feeling confused, and asked people in the hallway what was going on. Different students told me different things, but the main story was the same: airplanes that had been hijacked by terrorists had hit the Twin Towers. It didn?t seem real, like something out of a movie. Throughout the day, we kept on watching the news and finding out more information about the terrorist attacks. Slowly, it became real, and I wondered if anything else was going to happen to the U.S., to us, to me. I watched anxiously for the next few weeks for something more to happen, but when no more terrorist attacks happened, my life pretty much went back to normal. Thinking back over the past year, I realize my life really hasn?t changed from the September 11th attacks. At first there was sadness over what happened to all those people and being frightened that something was going to happen to me. I?m still get sad when I hear about the victims, but no one I know was personally involved in the attacks nor do I know anyone that knew someone in the World Trade Centers or Pentagon. Also since we haven?t had any more terrorist attacks, and I live in a small town that would have no significance to terrorists, I am longer afraid of being attacked. I do feel more patriotic and have a love for my country, but I don?t come face to face with the effects of September 11th everyday like all the families and friends the victims left behind do. If there has been an impact on my life, it?s been that I appreciate more the freedoms we have, and realize how lucky I am to live in a free country instead of a place like Afghanistan where until recently girls couldn?t even go to school. Even though I don?t feel that there would be a terrorist attack near my town, it?s not impossible that there could be an attack on Kentucky. Effects from September 11th affect the whole nation, and what affects the nation has an impact on me. As like many everyday ordinary citizens of this great country -- I was was doing an ordinary thing that day. I was enjoying a late summer vacation with my husband, sister and brother-in-law at the Jersey shore. We happened to be watching the Today Show while we were waiting for my brother-in-law to get ready for our day trip to Cape May, NJ. Those images of the planes hitting the Trade Towers will be indelibly embedded in my mind. We knew that when we saw that second plane hit the second tower that these were no ordinary "accidents". We knew that our sovereignty had been violated by some kind of terroristic group but like most people the words like "Al-Quaida" and "Jihad" had little meaning for us before 9/11. All the while we were listening and watching the events unfold on TV, we wrer seeing another chapter of our country's history unfold before our eyes. For some reason, I particularly remember a news report from a reporter inside the Pentagon before that building was struck. He was just empathizing about the tragedy in New York City when all of a sudden his voice became very shaky and he stated that there was an explosion of some kind in the Pentagon. It was very chilling to actually here that live explosion on air. Although I have no direct connection with anyone who lost loved ones in any of the events that ocurred on 9/11 -- I think of their losses daily and pray for them and our nation. I was at the time a bus operator for the NYCTA. I drove the x28 from bensonhurst section of brooklyn to manhattan. I had been a driver on this line for years and knew many of my passengers, some by their first names others just by simple hellos and an exchange of smiles. I loved this job and even turned down a promotional opportunity, just to be near "my people". For the four months before i had picked a different line the x29. Monday September10th was the first day of a new pick, thank God i was back on my favorite line the x28. On that tuesday like the day before i was saying hello to all my old friends i had not seen for months. As it happens so often on my job you get to know many of your passengers and they get to know you. On 9/11/01 i had just dropped off my heaviest stop. That was church street directly across from the WTC. about 15 passengers were exititing the bus past me. One Young lady I had not seen in months, stopped and said hi Jimmy are you back with us this pick , i smiled and said of course. She rubbed my right arm,and said great to have you back. She and the others exited the bus and crossed over church street to go to their jobs in the world trade center. I had picked this young lady(about 32) for a couple of years. I remember her telling me she worked in the upper floors of the north tower once, but not every day.I always remember a year before she was on my bus in the evening i had a standing load she was up front and i was pulling up to the last stop on broadway,she was on her cell. I had no more room on the bus and i wasn't going to open the doors. She pleaded her case that her fiancee was at that stop...she always smiled at me always said hello. NO questions asked nice people always win, i openend the doors and he squezzed on. They both thanked me, he was as nice as she was. So their you go another nice friendship was born. She always knew my name and like so many other people i only knew her smile and her stops. On 9/11 at approx 730am she walked off my bus rubbed my arm and smiled she crossed in front of my bus and waved ,i waved back and smilied. I continued on my trip uptown. I had a 9:25 second trip back out of Brooklyn. I had to drive back downtown to the battery to get back to Brooklyn. I stopped at the light on West And Vessey, looked down at my watch 8:40 am. I had plenty of time, but im so very sorry to say that young lady and thousands more did not have as much time left. This is one of my memories of that date. I worked for the next two years till i could retire. Ive always had the guilt of that day taking innocents to work on that oterwise clear 75 degree day, but my mind stays cloudy. I dont miss driving into Manhattan, but do so miss the many friends i had on that bus. May all thoes lost and their families find the peace they do so deserve. I turned on the t.v. in my classroom and saw the results of the first tower crash of the WTC. I called my parents on my cell phone to tell them to turn on the news, and that's when the second plane crashed into the other tower. I couldn't believe it and didn't know if this was a war starting. We were told by administration to not tell the students about this and to not have the tv on in our classrooms, so I was worried the whole day. Tell us your story: As I got into my car and proceeded to leave my boyfriend's apartment on the morning of September 11, 2001, all I heard on the radio in my car was that there was an attack against the World Trade Center and that 1 tower had collasped. I was speechless to hear that many were trapped inside and they were expecting many deaths. As I continued to my Mom's house, things just got worse. As one event would happen, all I could think of was, "What wil happen next!" By the time that I got to my destination I was horrified and sadened to think that someone was behind this and was causing our nation such grief. By the end of that day and still a year later I feel for all the families that lost loved ones and friends to this traggic event in history. I honestly don't think that it was God that planned this. However, the terrorists behind this event wanted to bring this nation to its knees. We were brought to our knees but not in the way that they wanted. We are now on our knees in prayer united together and a year later we are still surviving and fighting for our freedom. I didn't really prpare myself to fly again but next week on July 4th weeknd my whole family is flying to Houston, TX for a family reunion. To add to my anxiety thre was a terrorist threat for TX the same weekend we will be there. We will not allow the threat to keep us from our family. As scared as I am to fly ( and I am 35 years old) I will place it in Gods hands and hope for the best. September 11, 2001 I was trying to get my son off to school. At the time he was 11 years old now 13 years old. My mom had stayed over that night because at the time she commutes for her job. I just got out of the shower nd se said someone had just a plane in the World Trade Center. I didn't have the sound of the TV turned up. It looked like a Bruce Willis movie. I turned up the sound and I heard alot of screaming . I sat there and watched as the 2nd plane hit the sout Tower. I stared to cry. No I don't know anyone from there but it was so hard to compute all of tis. Then I saw people jumping..jumping from the top. I felt so sick inside. I took my son to school were I assured him he would be safe. He was also nervous about going to his after school program. I told him he will be safe and can call me at anytime. When I got to work I had a personal TV with me and I watched the Pentagon in flames then after that a plane goes down in PA. I called my mom and said is Frankie ( our cousin) ok ? He sometimes is at the Pentagon for business. She just had called his brother and there was no word if my cousin ws dead or alive. That was more than I could take. I dropped to my knees and cried. Oh Lord I cried. I left work and went to pick up my son. Finally after 5 hours we were notified he is alive and in a bunker. I cried all over again because I was relieved but also I felt guilty. Other loved ones never had a chance. But I thank God for him sparing my cousin. I have the TV turned off so my son would't see this over nd over again. Next day I was scared to send my son to school. But I did anyway. I went to work. At 3:00 pm I got call from his after school program that I needed to come pick my son up because they just had a bomb theat called in. I couldn't talk after I was told that. I handed the phone to my manager and went and asked a friend if he can drive me over to get my son. He said yes. I got in the truck and I literally lost it. I couldn't stop crying. Damn them to hell calling a after school program and threatening them with a bomb. I went to were they were holding kids and I jut grabbed him and held him for a long time. Then we went home. We did what we could for donations. My son even put his own $12 in for he 911 relief fund. He said they need it more than I do. My sons innocence was taken away a long time ago from a personal family situation but anything he had left was gone on 9/11. So before I leave on the 3rd from AZ I willbe sending out emails to my loved ones. I am going to handwrite the one to my son. I am calling them the just in case something happens emails. I had read alot of painful stories from 9/11 and the ones who never got a chnace to say good bye to their loved one. Tell us your story: I was on the phone ordering materials for a job we were doing when the salesman told me that the Trade Center had been attacked. He had the radio on at his desk and had heard the news. We instantly stoppped with the order as I turned on the television to find the news. Of course that was not hard to do. The salesman and I said our goodbyes and we each turned our attention to the moment. My father and I manage Viet-Vet, a contracting business in Maryland. My father is a decorated Nam vet who takes his Country seriously. As I told him what was going on we both just stopped to watch the news. We watched as the second plane slammed into the Tower, and as we watched I could feel the anger grow inside myself. I felt an overwelming urge to just run. There was anger an abundance of it, but there was also a huge sense of loss, a sense of emptiness. I can't even describe all the mixed emotions raging inside. After watching for what seemed an eternity I felt that I needed to go to work to busy myself if nothing else. As I drove to the jobsite, The Pentagon was attacked. I had to ask God when he was going to stop the madness that was going on all around me that day. As I worked that day, I kept the radio on listenning to the kaos and hoping it was an Orsen Wells tale, but knowing that it had been too real. For days my family and I stayyed glued to the TV, watching, elated at the survivors rescue devasted as the number of dead and missing kept rising. A few weeks after 9-11-01 a local motorcycle dealer organized a fund raiser for the victims families. The paticipants met at the store, roughly 7,000 people to ride our bikes around the Baltimore Beltway in a parade displaying flags of all sizes. People lined the streets to greet the riders to thank us for supporting our heroes. We didn't deserve thanks. It is every Americans responsibility to support your troops, local public services and your elected officials. Let's not loose sight of why we do what we do. Because at the time we believe it to be right. Follow your beliefs, your heart and never forget what has happened to "Our Great Nation". Babies were crying, doctors were visiting, and we were trying to get the little ones ready to go home. Someone came in and said that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Then there came an announcement that the world Trade Center in New York city had been struck by a plane. All the sudden there was talk about war. But then came the announcement that stated that teachers should turn off their Televisions and continue lessons. This outraged me because this was certainly history in the making and I was missing it for review of stuff I?ve known for years. It was startling; I guess, when it happened. Anything that get teachers to turn on their Televisions happens seldom or not at all. That day he was working as a carpenter, at 120 Broadway on the 20th fl, 1 block away from WTC. I dropped him off in front of the World Trade Center at 6am, returned home, got ready for work, took the kids to school and went to work. At the time of the 1st tower being struck, I was on a conference call when someone mentioned what had happened. My office mate (who's wife) worked at Tower 1 and I stared at each other, turned on the radio and immediately tried to call our spouses. As with everyone else, the cell phones were down and we could not reach them. We each consoled each other, knowing in our hearts that our phones would soon ring and it would be our spouses. Around 9:30am, my husband called, frantic, upset, and out of breath. He had been running for almost an hour. After hearing the impact on the 1st tower, he went to the window where he had a direct look at what had happened and thought it had been an accident. Soon after he saw a 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower and knew we were under attack, quickly left the building and started running north as quickly as possible, constantly trying to call me. I was so happy and relieved that he was safe. He was at a bus stop and was going to wait for the bus to take him home. I called my kids school and asked them to relay the message that their father was safe. My office mate on the other hand, still had not received any calls from his wife and was losing hope. Sticking together we prayed and hoped for his phone to ring. As the radio said the 1st tower was collapsing, then the 2nd tower was collapsing, we were so hoping that phone would ring. It finally rang, she was safe and at the White Plains train station. After the plane hit the 1st tower, she immediately evacuated from the 2nd tower, jumped on the subway to Grand Central Station to take Metro North home. What a relief our spouses were both safe!! My office mate left work and went to pick up his wife as I waited to hear from my husband again as to whether he was on a bus heading home. He was at the bus stop alright, but the bus never came as the city had been shutdown and public transportation was at a stand still. He decided to start walking and met up with someone who lives a few blocks from our home, who too was wondering how to get home. Finally, their guardian angel appeared, a delivery van, with an advertisement from Queens. They approached the driver and asked him to take them home to Yonkers. After a bit of hesitation, the man agreed. I left the office to head home and to school to pick up my kids. Not realizing the buses were not running, I got home a bit alarmed that he was not yet home. I tried calling his phone and he told me he was in Yonkers, with a new friend' and was on his way home. I waited in the driveway and gave him the biggest hug imaginable and so happy that he had escaped safely. I emerged from Penn Station onto 7th Avenue roughly around 8:35am and I began my walk to the office which is on 5th Avenue and 17th street. As I passed beneath the scaffolds on the corner of 7th Avenue and 31st, I heard the unusually loud roar of an airplane and stopped to look up. Unable to see anything, I quickly paid it no mind and proceeded on my walk. When I finally crossed over to 5th Avenue, I noticed people on the east side of the street looking up and pointing downtown. I quickly ran across the street and to my horror, noticed the North Tower with a smoking gaping hole in it. Not having put two and two together, I quickly called home to find out what the news was reporting and then realized it was the plane I heard just a few minutes earlier. On the corner of 17th and 5th, I was joined by a co-worker as we stared in utter disbelief. Then we shouted in horror as a ball of fire exploded in the South Tower. Of course, from our perspective we hadn't seen the second jet ramming itself into Tower Two and at first we thought it was a bomb, but it didn't make sense. Soon enough, people on the street connected to cell phones were shouting that we were being attacked. I left my co-worker and quickly ran into the deli to buy a disposable camera. I ran back out and started to shoot whatever I could with this dinky little camera. After about 20 minutes of watching both Towers on fire, I was hungry for information so I ran into my office to hear the radio and joined many of my associates as we all tried to figure out was was going on. It was then that we heard a large uniform scream coming from the people outside on the street below. I stuck my head out the window and realized that Tower Two had disappeared. Who would ever think that it would completely collapse? We all ran back out to the street again and in moments we would witness the collapse of the North Tower. Still, I continued to take pictures as I captured the collapse in 4 frames...not bad for a disposable. The range of emotions in the street was incredible...people crying, screaming, nervous laughter, silent disbelief, cursing whomever did this to us. It must have been the surreal shock of what I witnessed, but the whole time I didn't even think about the people inside the Towers or the people on the planes. Maybe I assumed everyone got out, or I was just looking at these two giant structures ripped from our skyline as void of life within. The Long Island RR ride home was packed but silent as we could see the smoke rising from the ruins of downtown as our train headed east. The true shock and guilt set in when I finally got home to discover that one of my best friends, John Katsimatides, was on the 104th floor of the North Tower. Here I was taking pictures, and my friend was dying a horrific death.... and he just disappeared with hundreds of others, yet to be identified, and maybe never. Everyday I take that walk to my office. Everyday I re-live that morning. Everyday I think of my friend, John Katsimatides, and as long as I live, not a day will go by that I won't think of him and how he was taken from us. I turned on Q104.3 the New York classic rock station. At 8:45 they started saying that there was an explostion on top of one of the World Trade Center buildings. It didn't phase me a bit. I thought it was just a regular office fire or something like that. Then they just played music like nothing had happened. At 9:05 I got into the courtroom and no one knew what had happened. All of a sudden, a police officer rushes into the room and runs to the judge and whispers something into his ear. The judge tells everyone that there will be a 15 minute recess. I went outside to have a cigarette and my friend Ryan had called my cell phone. "A plane just crashed into the WTC." he says. I couldnt believe it but I told him that I could not talk because I had to go inside. Literaly 45 seconds later, Ryan calls back saying that we have no more World Trade Center. I was in total shock. All I could think of was my brother who lives in Manhattan. I tried calling him but Ryan's phonecall was the last one I made that morning. I went inside the courtroom and the judge had told us all to go home and everyone will have an extended court date. On my drive back I turned on the radio and everyone was so quiet. I came home and had 4 voicemails on my cell phone. Everyone that I went to school with in Albany was asking me if I was ok. I couldn't even call them back to tell them I was fine. I got in contact with my brother and he was ok. My parents were in France at the time so I could not get in touch with them. I watched tv for a little while but I couldnt find any regular programming. Every station had the same picture on it. The towers on fire. It was awful. I just wanted to go and help out in some way but I couldn't. I spent the night by the beach. I had to get away from everything. It was so relaxing during a time so stressful. I knew the second that I got that phonecall from Ryan that everything was going to change. Nothing was the same since.
