Tell us your story: I am a speech-language pathologist and was working as the preschool SLP for the Knox County Educational Service Center, at the time. I had just finished therapy with one of my preschoolers and one of the Itinerant Preschool teachers told me the horrible news. She said a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center and they thought it was terrorists. It looked like something out of a movie when I saw it on t.v., like it wasn't real. It was the most horrible feeling. Not knowing whether the entire nation was under attack or what was going to happen next. Once the second plane had hit and the plane had hit the Pentagon, I surely thought we were under attack from a rogue nation. I had nightmares to weeks following the attacks and I did my fair share of crying, along with the rest of the nation. It definitely made me realize what's important in life, your family, friends, and our freedom. I have since gave birth to our first child, who was conceived one month following the attacks. I hope I can teach her to respect and take pride in our nation, and to fight for it, if need be. I know I would if called upon. I will just continue to do my job to the best of my ability and I won't let anyone make me fearful to walk outside of my own home, or anywhere else for that matter. We had not turned on the TV that morning and so I did not know what was going on until my sister who was on her way to work and heard it on her radio. Tell us your story: it was early morning 7:35am on a Tuesday when i herd about the planes that hit the towers i was just sitting down to breakfast with my baby cousin nico who is only 4 years old. and thats when my moms sister new she had to go and help and find people in that horrible rubble. i was in tears that day because i had just rembered my cousin stephanie worked in the world trade tower on the 99th floor at the very tops and i found out that she never made it out but hours later they found her and no she didnt survive. sorry to say we miss her dearly. i will never ever forget that tragic day. i am still having nigthmares from it. but i know now that anyone who was in the towers has gone to Heaven. and they are all looking down on us. im coming to Ny city to say my last goodybyes to my cousin who died there. ill be there after the christmas holiday. to say farewell to everyone. may we all go on now and rember those dearly who are still with us today. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My family and I had just finished a road trip from Salt Lake City, Utah to Maryland. We arrived, and were staying, at the home of family on September 10, 2001. On the morning of the 11th we had an appointment at 10:30 AM, through the office of Senator Hatch, to tour the US Capitol Building. We left late that morning, and did not turn on the TV before leaving. Our drive to the Bethesda Metro station was peaceful and uneventful. We were visiting with each other and did not turn on the radio. Nor did we bring a cell phone with us. We planned on a nice, leisurely day in downtown DC, just being tourists. We arrived at Union Station in downtown Washington, DC at about 10:30AM. Since we were obviously late for our tour appointment we tried to use the pay phone in the Metro station to call Senator Hatches office, to reschedule our tour appointment. All of the pay phones were out of service. We then took the escalator up into Union Station, with the intent of finding a working pay phone, and something to eat, since in our rush none of us had eaten anything before leaving. In Union Station we were not able to use the pay phone either. When we started walking that direction, a guard stopped us and told us we needed to exit the station because there was a bomb threat. We exited Union Station, with the intent of walking to the Hart Senate Building, to reschedule our tour appointment. What we saw we have since named our Tour of Terror. Not that it was terrifying to us, since we were blissfully unaware of the events that had already happened in NY and just across the Potomac River at the Pentagon. What we saw was a city in panic. Backhoes placing Jersey barriers in front of Union Station was the first thing we saw upon exiting the building. We casually walked up towards the Capitol, where we saw police stationed about every 50 feet around the Capitol, with many more Capitol police putting yellow tape around the Capitol grounds. We continued to walk, toward the Hart Senate building, where we saw even more Capitol police, lined shoulder to shoulder. They formed a human wall between the Capitol building on one side and the Supreme Court building on the other. It is one of the most amazing things I have seen. Even though I was still unaware of the events of that morning, it hit me that these men and women were lined together, protecting our nations Capitol, even to their own deaths if necessary. I was video taping the entire time. At one point, a man stopped to make a comment that panic was an interesting thing to observe. I agreed, because I was not paniced. I thought everyone that was paniced was feeling so because of the bomb threat at Union Station, just a couple of blocks away. We continued our walk, and of course realized that no one was getting into the Hart Senate building, let alone taking a tour of the Capitol Building. This is where another man told us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center buildings. We thought he meant, as so many did, that a plane had accidently hit one of the tall towers. We decided to head to the Smithsonian Metro station, and began walking that direction. We saw bomb squads heading for Union Station, military personnel escorting news media, Senators in the green park areas of DC, and heard more sirens and whistles than you could ever imagine. Everyone was exiting the city and the traffic was stopped completely. As we neared the Mall we could see smoke in the distance, above the tree lines. We would realize later that this was smoke from the Pentagon fires. We left Washington, DC safely. Somewhat aware that something big and terrible had happened. In the Smithsonian Metro station a man told us that two passenger jets had hit both World Trade Center towers. It was hard to believe. When we arrived at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, where we had parked and taken the Metro from, we found more security. The Navy base had been locked up tight. In our absence, Jersey barriers had been placed at every entrance and exit, but one. As we exited the base and drove back to our family's home, we listened to the radio. And then like every other person on the planet we were glued to the TV for the next few days. Watching over and over with horrendous disbelief the two, tall, towers of the World Trade Center be hit, and then colapse. We also listened to the story unfold of the bravery of the passengers and crew on Flight 93. Lot's of what if's linger in my mind. What if we had arrived in DC earlier? What if Flight 93 wasn't brought down by an incredibly brave group of people? It is overwhelming this sacrifice that was made. There is no way to thank someone for such an act. But I will always remember. We were one of the thousands stranded. We had planned on flying out from Reagan Int'l aiport on the morning of the 12th. We weren't so excited to fly anywhere. We were also lucky, in that we had a place to stay. People that we knew. Thanks to them, for taking care of us for a few more days. We flew out from Baltimore, on the night of the 15th. Many people can attest to the nervousnous and anxiety in the aiports on that day. Each passenger suspicious of the other, but also each passenger being part of an alliance against a threat. And we had "Dave", a Flight Martial on our flight to Atlanta. Thank you Dave for being there. And now, 1 year later, I am remembering quietly the events of that day. I am at work, and after work I will go home. Something that over 3,000 people had taken away from them, this life of working and going home to loved ones. It has been a difficult year, emotionally. I can't bear to watch the planes hit the World Trade Center, and watch the buildings collapse, again. I will not watch any TV coverage today, just for that reason. I will say a quiet, respectul, grateful, and solemn thanks in my heart once again to those on Flight 93. I walked to two blocks up to my office, after stopping for coffee, and was just sitting down at my desk and logging into the computer when a co-worker, who was telecommuting that day, got online and instant messaged me. She said a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. She was handing me details as she got them from the news and then all of a sudden she says she watched the second plane hit. I called my mom, who worked in Melville, NY, on Long Island. Her office was just finding out the news as well and were looking for a television. It was almost impossible to get to CNN.com or any of the other online news sites. Then the word that the Pentagon had been hit. I immediately called my mom to let her know I was OK. My office is just half a mile from the National Institutes of Health and the National Naval Medical Center, so she was understandably worried. I woke my husband up, who is in the Navy and stationed in Hawaii. I told him the news and he went to look for a TV while I would try and reach his mother in Texas. As I made contact with friends and family, some having to resort to email to reach me and reassure themselves, my mind started working again and I realized that my brother is a NYC paramedic, along with is new wife. I called my mom again, getting through after several tries, and asked her if she knew where Chris was. She said he was home and I asked about my other brother, who works on the Staten Island Ferry and she said she was worried about him. Well, turns out, my brother who worked on the ferry was home, but the other, Chris, was at work at Flushing Memorial Hospital. He and his wife were assigned to two different triage areas, where, unfortunately, they had no one to treat. We didn't know they were ok until much later that night. I remember standing on the street, looking into a restaurant that had TV screens (it wasn't opened yet) and talking with a complete stranger who wished me the best in finding out if my brother was still alive. I will never forget that day. Or the days that followed. I have yet to go to the World Trade Center and look at it. As I was leaving I turned on the radio and realized something was terribly wrong. At first the news wasn't makng much sense, but it soon became clear that what was happening was crazy. I drove home and instantly turned on my television and liked everyone was glued to the horror that was unfolding. How could buildings fall? Who was crazy enough to do all this? How many lives were lost? Tears just began to flow like a turned on faucet. As the first reports starting coming out, the number of casualties were in the thousands. I heard possibly 20,000 people could have lost their lives. How? Why? What the hell was going on. I remember praying for families. For comfort, to find loved ones, to somehow find rest, to feel the strength provided by God in time of need, to somehow make sense of it all. It didn't and to this day doesn't. How can somehow justify killing so many innocent people? As the news began informing us what was happening and the plan of attack that the United States was considering, panic took over my whole body. You see I have a son in college and the thought that he could possibly be sent to war horrified me. I know that that doesn't sound very patriotic, but it's unimaginable to me that at 18 he would be sent to a foreign country and told to kill. Send me, fine, but my child, no. In my mind I know that war is what keeps us free, but the thought of losing my child scared me to death. September 11, 2001 changed the world. It wasn't by choice and I don't think that anything will ever make us feel secure and protected again. I will continue to pray for these families and ask God to please "Bless America". Not truly understanding what was taking place thought the story was just minor. Minutes later I received a phone call from a friend that the second tower was hit. Immediately I thought about my co-workers that worked in the Financial are next to the Twin Towers. I started trying to reached them at the office and mobile but to no avail. In my office we have a TV when I started watching to see what was happening. Immediately I felt so much sadness and a tear was running down my cheek. Right now he is in NYC and I have decided to write what I can recall of that day we will never forget. It will stand out in my memory along with the day JFK was shot in Dallas when I waw a teenager in school about 35 miles from the site. You remember where you were and what you were doing.... My husband spends a lot of time in NYC at the corporate offices taking care of business at least five to ten days a month or more. The office is on 39th and 5th Avenue. On 9/11/01 I was asleep when the phone rang at 8:05 a.m. My husband was calling to ask if I had the TV on. I told him no and asked why he would call to ask me that. He said that there was a report of a plane hitting one of the towers. He didn't know if it was a small plane off course or what. He couldn't imagine an airliner hitting a tower as they didn't go that way. He got off the phone and I turned on the TV and within minutes saw the the second plane hit the second tower. I was horrified. I immediatly called my husband and told him I wanted him out of there, NOW!!! I called the airport, bus station, train...nothing available. I called his local office to see if there was anything that could be done. As the news became more grim my stomach just tied up in knots. My husband calls me every little bit to let me know what is happening. He tells me that one the ladies in the office is crying and distraught as her husband called and told her he saw people jumping from the buidings. After a while my hubands office is closed down. He goes out on Fifth Avenue and looks down the street and can see the towers burning. Later on he saw that they were no longer standing. What a shock....having been on top of the towers years ago...looking down on the city...feeling the wind blow and feeling the slight movement of the towers...and now they are...gone!! My husband was concerned about people he knew in Tower 2. He had a big project that they were working on that was nearing a critical date for completion. Later on in the day he receives word that all of the people from that office had escaped from the building. This was great news to know that their lives were spared. At the corporate offices in Birmingham, Alabama and Jackson, Mississippi the personel officers were contacting the associates in NYC and trying to assure them that they were working on a way to get them out of town as soon as possible. I had a call and was told that my husband would be out of NYC by noon the following day. Thank God for cell phones!!! My husbands worked beutifully all that day!!! That saved me so much stress. I gave my husband the information and the details of where he and about one hundred other associates are to meet etc. the next day. He can't check into his room yet as it's too early so he goes and walks the streets carrying his heavy briefcase and laptop. I get another call that evening when he checks into his room....he just wants to get home!!! Around noon on the 12th a bus chartered from Birmingham, Alabama arrives in NYC and picks up the associates. My husband calls me as they cross over into Newark, he stated that it was such a relief to cross the bridge. When he got home he was in a lot of pain due to as we found out later, a ruptured disk from carrying so much stuff. He didn't really talk a lot about what he saw or how he felt. I knew he was in denial. The very next week after the incedent he had to go back for three days. I didn't want him flying up there, and I knew he was a little apprehensive, but he had to go. During his free hours he walked the streets...went down to the ground zero area and told me about the awful smells and dust everywhere. What really bothered him was all the posters and photo's along the sidewalks and on the trees etc. It seemed to haunt him. About six weeks later he had to give a little report in church on 9/ll and he broke down. I have never seen him cry...much less show emotion. I knew than that this had really been very hard for him and tried to get him to talk more. As time went on he began to open up and share his feelings and start to heal. With the pain he was going through with his back and the incident he lost over twenty pounds and looked so haggared. Just such saddness in his eyes. Needless to say it has made us take a look at priorities in our lives. We as a family and as a country and world will never be the same. A month after 9/11 we went to the beach for a vacation and rest. It was so errie.....we would be in our room looking over the gulf and see patrol boats and hear and see the helicopter's flying down the beach front. It felt like we were in another world....our sense of security was gone. In March I flew up to NYC with my husband and went down to ground zero. What will forever stand out in my mind is looking up in the trees as we waited in line to view the site, and seeing venetian blinds and clothing blowing in the wind. That really left an imprint on my mind. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families around the world who lost loved ones and jobs due to a senseless act of ignorance. Everyone will always remember where they were and what they were thinking and doing that day. I had a cross country race later that day, and was thinking about that for most of the early morning. Nervous about the running to come, I went through my chemistry class without thinking about too much else and was walking towards my German class at the end of break when I heard the news. One of my friends came up to me and told me that he had just received a message on his pager saying that the one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit. Thinking it was a joke; I brushed it off and thought ?who cares? It?s not like it will affect me anyway!? Little did I know how much this event would affect me and everyone that I know. My friend with the pager told our teacher, and she switched on CNN, we all watched for a few minutes, and as my teacher went to turn it off, we saw the Pentagon get hit. Now everyone?s eyes were tuned to the TV. Many people in my class had parents who worked there, or like myself, a parent who worked in DC. A few girls started crying, and everyone was shocked as the watched the flames on the side of the Pentagon. People left the room and called their parents, and eventually I left as well to do the same. My Father works in DC, and I was putting off calling, delaying the inevitable, but then, as we started to hear reports of car bombs by the Capitol(very close to my Dad?s building)) I got worried and called. The rest of the day passed by in a blur or TV, worrying, and tears. My dad had called my mom and told her was fine, but said that he had to stay and help secure everything at his building. My race was cancelled, so I went home and fell asleep for a few hours, rather than watch the misery unfold on TV. People called relatives and friends from other states and countries, making sure my family was ok. My dad came home a few hours later after catching one of the last rides out of DC. Everyone I know was safe, but there are so many stories that still stick out in my mind about that harrowing day. I can only hope that the people of America will never again have to experience something so tragic and horrific. Suddenly the programmes were interrupted for a news flash. Reports from New York that a plane has crashed into a skyscraper. How awful, I thought. Airport congestion? Bad weather? Within minutes a second plane hit. I went as goosebumpy as I am now typing this. The newscaster is going crazy. Terrorism was the only answer. The audacity and evil of these people stuns me. Suicide bombing on a colossal scale. Less than a week before myself and my friends had sat in the pub and discussed the impossibility of dealing with terrorists who relished death. My taxi arrived, forcing me to move. I spoke to the driver who hadn't heard. He switched on the radio and every station seemed to have the same vague story. My local hospital is a military one, the only one left in England. It has treated soldiers for over150 years and it serves the local community too. I reach the department and find doctors, nurses, admin staff and patients crowded around the tv in the waiting room. People are calling out theories, horrified. Some are panicking. I recall one elderly man proclaiming that if America is being attacked, we are next. A couple of women are weeping, something that I'm sure would normally attract scorn or amazement. There is none on show today. Military personnel are present, no doubt harbouring their own theories. The only other time in my life that I recall such a standstill is the death of Diana. But this is larger scale. The deaths are greater and the shock of us all is palpable. By now people in the World Trade Centre are hanging out of the burning buildings. They have only two choices left in the world and both will end in death. I have always believed in symmetry and natural justice but not any more. I imagine some super agency springing into action and saving those people. I can't believe that "they" would let those people die. I have to face the reality that "they" are not invincible. It takes a little time for me to realise that my appointment has been delayed for nearly an hour. Inside the treatment room, the consultant and I talk about the tragedy. I'm having laser treatment, which burns. For once I don't complain, grateful to be safe on the ground. By the time I leave the hospital, there are soldiers guarding the gate. The new taxi driver tells me about the Pentagon crash. We have a conversation of if's, but's and maybe's. Like the people in the hospital, we are unanimous in who we believe may be responsible. No names but generalisations. Only time will tell. I go straight to my parents house for tea. My brother has arrived too. We watch the live pictures on tv. News is coming in all the time. Canary Wharf, a London skyscraper, has been evacuated. Another plane is believed to be flying off course over the US. My father, a former sailor, states that there would be no choice but to shoot that plane down. My mother and me, being female, can't talk in such cold terms. Killing more innocent passengers to save people on the ground is a hard choice to make. In Britain we've lived with terrorism for many years. Bombs in shopping malls, office blocks, banks, pubs, barracks and remembrance parades. 10, 20, 30 people killed in one go. For all what those victims have suffered, nothing comes close to what happened to the World Trade Centre. May those poor souls rest in peace. Tell us your story: I can still remember the feeling that came over me when I received a phone call from my sister on the morning of September 11, 2001. When she told me that an airplane had just flew into the world trade center and they were calling it a terrorist act. I felt a fear unlike anything I had ever experienced before. She told me to turn on the news and as we sat there watching the chaos, the second plane hit and my fear began to grow even more. You hear about things like this happening in different parts of the world, but you never expect that anything like this is going to happen here in the United States. Then as we were watching, the third and fourth planes crashed and all I could do is wonder what is coming next? We have a habit of taking things for granted and when something this disastrous happens, it makes you rethink everything. Being a young mother of three, it is really scary thinking that you have to worry about these kind of acts taking place and how you can possibly keep your family safe. You never know when or where something like this is going to happen so you can never be fully prepared to deal with this kind of tragedy. The one thing that stands out in my mind the most about 911 is standing outside in my yard with my children looking up at the sky watching the military airplanes fly overhead after the last attack. I won't ever be able to watch airplanes flying overhead anymore without feeling apprehensive. I saw the fiery tower on a broadcasting news station on my television. I heard the frightened and shocked voices explaining how the first plane smacked into the tower on my radio. I used the television and the radio through the whole ordeal as the 9/11 tragedies made world history. My life hasn?t changed because of the 9/11 tragedies, but I was clearly affected by the results. I didn?t fly a flag after September 11, 2002, not because I?m not patriotic only because I don?t think just the American flag should have been in the air. Still my feelings for the American flags are still the same I?m proud and would be happy to raise the American flag for I was born in America. When I arrived August 31st after a 23 hour drive, the place was in shambles with a wall of trash in the driveway. After twelve 15-hour days, we were starting to see the light. I very rarely give thought to the weather, or introspection. I distinctly remember thinking how odd it was, because it was dead calm, beautiful blue sky, and peaceful. I though, "I cant believe what an beautiful day it is". It was Sept, 11. About 7:30. I sat with my morning coffee on my front steps and for a brief moment, I wasnt so sad about my situation. I have rarely felt that way in my life, stuggling to get ahead. I just dont reflect that way. How ironic that it all began as I sat there thinking of the beauty of the day. I was painting in the basement with the radio on, when my neighbor came over. We watched the people jump. I called my father, and we cried together on the phone for the peoples lives. My neighborhood was filled with Army people, and the wives were frantic. Then people started arriving home to my neighborhood from the pentagon, about 8 miles away. The sheer shock is what struck me, and our incomprehension of such incaring. We cant understand it. As they closed the highways to traffic, noone could get home, so Army personnel started walking home! What a sight, people streaming down the freeway in high heels, officers, enlisted men, office workers. Everyone just wanted to be with their family.
