Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Racquel K. Kelley and I work for Department of Defense in the Pentagon. I was sitting at my desk in 1D520 when all of a sudden there was a loud BOOM!!!!!!! At first I thought damn they have messed up somewhere cause they were doing renovations in the new corridors. I was pinned against my desk with debris, smoke and fire all around me. I called out to my coworkers but no one answered. Something fell from out of the sky and hit me in the back of my head. I then thought ?I GOT TO GO. I CAN?T DIE I JUST HAD BABY!!! I then somehow got free from my desk and dove under my desk. I reached my hand into my cabinet and grabbed my purse. While under my desk, I kicked the back of my desk out and crawled through only to meet with more falling debris, smoke and fire. Two of my coworkers, Janice Jackson and Doug Knickerbocker pulled me out from under the debris. We ran and crawled over bodies, parts of bodies and total destruction until we reached what used to be the E ring and a big hole. There were people on the other side helping us get through. The hole that you saw with the smoke coming out of it on television, that is the hole that we came out of. I was sitting on the grass just staring at the Pentagon still unaware of what had happened. I ended up in the Washington Hospital Center ICU unit with burns on my hands, arms and hair, cuts on my feet and severe smoke inhalation. I was in the hospital for a week and a half; spending four days on a respirator. I was the first Pentagon survivor to go home. It felt strange leaving the hospital and returning home because at the hospital I felt safe, here out in the world I DO NOT!!! I still have nightmares. I do not like loud sudden noises. I watch the planes and helicopters fly overhead hoping they don?t fall on me. Mentally I?m a wreck!!! I cry a lot for friends, coworkers and myself that perished that day. Tell us your story: September 11th before lunch had begun about ten of my classmates had been taken away leaving the rest of us confused and left to wonder if there was something wrong in the outside world. Recess was cancled folloed by the grones and complains of everyone about the injustice.LIttle did we know lives were being taken from people as we spoke. later in the day our teacher gave a long speach on how there are horible people in the world and that if our parents werent home when we got there we needed to come straight back to the school. This scared me beyond belief. I wondered what in the world is going on. SO many bad thoughts ran through my head. Upon returning home i was greeted by the imegery of people jumping out of the world trade center. I spent the next three hours locked in the bathroom fighting back tears and vomit that had both arisen at the horrific thought of what those people were thinking to have to jump out of the building. That night i didnt sleep. I kept having nightmares of planes crashing killing everyone i knew and loved. This day was truly the day i relized that the world is full of things worse then my 11 year old mind had ever thought would have to comprehend. My family and i had just moved to Sterling Virginia 2 months previous because my father had accepted a job at the Pentagon. We were all reeling from the shocks of moving three thousand miles away from everything that we had grown accustomed while living in Washington State. On the morning of September 11th, it was like any other day. We were all rushing around trying to get ready for work and school. My dad rushed out of the house first, his Supervisor from his old job was flying into Dulles later that morning and he wanted to make sure that everything was up to par. I took my time and was almost late to school, but it was history, so i kinda brushed it away. I was sitting in Geometry class when our principal came over the announcements and told us about the plane hitting the first tower. As horrible as this sounds, i really didnt know what was going on, so i just kinda went along with the lesson. A few minutes later the principal chimed in again and told us that another plane had hit another tower. i was really beginning to get scared at that point because i had no idea what was going to happen next. Unfortionatly though, the next thing that i heard was that the pentagon had been hit. That was it for me. i felt as if the room was spinning. I began shaking and tears began streaming down my face. my teacher just kept going on with the lesson, completely oblivious as to what was happening. My school was put into a lock down, and i was in a portable trailer, detached from the entire school. The more i sat there, the more that i began to panick. i began invisioning my father dying and that thought scared me more than anything else. Finally, we were permitted to go to our next class, and i got to see some of the footage of the pentagon and the feeling came back when i saw that the plane had it the same section of where my fathers office was. I got up, walked out of class and just sat in the office, waiting for a phone to open up. FInally at around noon, i got ahold of my mother, who told me that my dads boss was alright and my dad had gotten to the pentagon and found out that he had a meeting that day that he didnt know about. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had a scheduled MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) on Sept. 11, and was put into the machine right before 9am. The technicians gave me the bad news that while the headphones they put on my head would block some of the louding knocking sounds an MRI produces, the CD player wasn't working, so I couldn't listen to music while inside. Would I mind listening to the radio? After a few minutes of knocking and unrememorable pop music playing over the headset, the radio suddenly cut to a news broadcast, describing how a "small plane" had hit the World Trade Center. Having worked as a commuter to NYC (in publishing), I thought, "Well, it really was just a matter of time that something like that happened," and didn't think much more of it. Then the music was interrupted again, and the second plane hit was reported. My mind suddenly started thinking, "This is deliberate." I began panicking. The radio reported that the first plane was from Boston -- I had friends flying from Boston to LA that morning. My heartrate went up: in the isolation, I could feel everything, and nothing. I was in a tank, alone, with loud knocks all around, and no one to talk to, to tell me what was =really= going on. The technicians cut in on a microphone and reminded me to stay still: apparently I was moving in agitation. I held completely still while they told me my heartrate was too high: was I perhaps afraid of small places? I told them what I was hearing on the radio. They responded that the radio wasn't playing out in their area; perhaps I was imaging things. That sort of thing, planes hitting the WTC, couldn't possibly be happening. "Sometimes people imagine things while in the isolation of the MRI," they said. I began to doubt what I thought I was hearing. Maybe it was a radio drama. Time went by. Reports kept coming in. I was still in isolation, as they had to extend the MRI tests. Then I heard about the Pentagon. My imagination filled in the images more clearly than I've ever seen before -- very strange. What was next? Boston itself? We were only 60 miles away -- too close if someone had a pocket nuke or another device. No, that wasn't possible. I began to wonder if the techs were right: was I imagining it all? Finally the test ended and I could leave. I told the techs once more about the radio broadcasts, and once more they rejected the idea that it had really happened. The clinic was strangely quiet. Everyone was going about their business as if nothing was happening. No one had heard what I had heard. I felt as if I were still in the MRI chamber: isolated in my knowledge. I was =sure= it had happened, but what if ... ? It was not until I got into my car and turned on the radio, and I could confirm it all. It =was= happening. I hadn't imagine it after all. It was the closest thing to feeling as if I'd truly lost my mind as I've ever felt. But that was nothing compared to what others were going through. I knew so many people in New York. Including some living in Battery Park City -- right in the shadow of the WTC. What about them? They turned out to be safe, and in fact came to live with me for a month and a half before returning home; home beside the rubble and the smell and the fear. My friends flying from Boston on Sept 11? -- one had delayed his flight. The other was on his plane. Danny's gone now -- no body to bury. He just recently relocated and sometimes called in the mornings. I was half asleep while talking on the phone so things were already not really registering. Just at the moment I decided to turn on the television the awful image of a plane flying through the World Trade Center had just shown. I was not really sure what was going on. I watched as eveything unfolded in front of my eyes on television and really didn't know what to say or think--all I could do was cry. I remembered being at the top of the WTC in 1989 looking over what seemed like the whole world. Everyday I am reminded of all the people whose lives changed forever that day. I have pictures of the view from atop the WTC that I look at from time to time, and realize how truly grand those buildings were and just how many people worked there and visited everyday. On September 11'th, I was at home by myself doing my schoolwork. I am homeschooled so I was home when it happened. I had a sick feeling that something realy bad was going on. I guess you could call it a perminision of some sort. I had no idea that it was so bad though. My dad came home and practicaly jumped out of his truck and ran into his room. He slammed the door shut too and that is when I knew something was realy wrong. I did't want to realy wory about it so I turned on the television. I turned a few chanels and that is when I saw it. I was so sick to my stoumache. At first I didn't know what was happening. I saw the smoke when I turned to that channel and I was like what on earth is happening. Thats when I heard the words... " America has been attacked and the twin towers have been hit". I started to cry. It scared me so much that I just realy couldn't move. I was parilysed with fear. When my dad came back by and went back to work all we could do was look at each other. He knew I knew but he did not want to talk about it to me in case I didn't know. I get upset about these things realy easily and he didn't want to tell me that we were at war untill it was official. I called everyone I knew and we all wached it together. Then an aquaintance of mine called and wanted me to come over, and that is when my parents told me we were at war. I told her I couldn't and when I hung up the phone I burst into tears and could not stop crying. Allthough I did not know anyone in the towers or on the planes, it broke my heart. Then I got sick again when I saw OBL's people celebrating. I thought to myself, how could some one human do such a thing like this? Today I joined a memorial service in our Hospital and they had a voice over of actual calls from the people trapped in the towers, while they played Sarah McGauclens "Angel". I just burst into tears like everyone else in that building did. I loaded myself up with red white and blue. I even wore three extra rings just so that I could have a red white and blue ring on. I love America and all the people in it. I mourn for those who have been lost and the familys of those people. God bless everyone and may peace someday come with no more wars and tears. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: At 7 a.m. PDT on September 11, 2001, as I was readying myself to go to work, the phone rang. My friend Debbie told me to turn on the t.v. "We're under attack!" My first action was to attempt to reach my daughter, who lives elsewhere in California (I finally talked to her that evening). On the way to work, I listened to the radio in my truck and, once at work, watched events unfold on television and on my computer. Not much work got done; people stood around the t.v. all day. The first call I received in my office that morning came from a local travel agent. She had arranged a trip to Portugal and the Azores for my boss, his wife, and some of their friends. The group was due home that day. The travel agent related that the group was in the air when the attacks on America began and their plane, scheduled to land in Newark, was being rerouted to Canada. Eventually the plane landed in Halifax. Some 6000 or so airline passengers were rerouted to Halifax that day, and the Canadians were so kind to everyone. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had a 2 year old son at the time, and a new baby daughter. She had just turned one month old. I was so tired-staying up most of the night with her-that I fell asleep on my stomach at the foot of the bed that night. When I woke up in the morning, I lifted my head and saw the TV, which had been on all night. There was Katie Couric, saying that the 2nd plane had just hit, and I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought, "What in the world is this?!" I felt my stomach drop as the story unfolded before my eyes. They repeatedly showed the first plane crash-people had thought the first one was just an accident. The video showed people watching the first plane hit, then going back to what they were doing, like it was no big deal. It wasn't until the second one hit that people realized that something very terrible was happening. Like every other person in the world, I sat and watched, wanting it to be just a bad dream I'd soon wake up from. Finally realizing that it was not a dream, a wave of hopelessness and terror washed over me. I thought to myself, "This is it. We are all going to die. They are going to get us. This is the end. My babies don't get to grow up!" Shaking with my sobs, I pulled my precious son out of his bed and put him into mine. I just cradled him in my arms, softly sobbing. He didn't wake up-he still sleeps like a rock to this day. I then went into my precious daughter's room to watch her sleep. I continue to cry as I touched her back gently. She continued to sleep peacefully, as well. I felt so lost, so helpless, and so desperately lonely, I called my husband at work. He just asked, "Some planes hit some buildings somewhere?" There was no way for him to understand the magnitude of the unfolding tragedy. I remember sobbing, begging for him to come home. He couldn't, though. All I thought about was him being hurt-we still had no idea if these were isolated incidents or not. I called my mom and my sister-anyone I could think of- just to try and find one person that wasn't scared and that could comfort me. It turned out that everyone was as scared and unsure as I was. I sat there again, crying, watching my children peacefully asleep, blissfully unaware of what was going on. I just feared for their future. Like many others, I did not recover quickly. I remained glued to the couch for several weeks, severely depressed. I literally felt hopeless, paralyzed, and just weak. I couldn't get up. I'm normally a girl that loves to eat, but I couldn't even force myself to take a bite of food or even drink. I was dehydrated and lost about 30 lbs. very quickly. The only thoughts on my mind were thought of fear, death, and tragedy. It's no way for anyone to live. I knew I had to make some big changes in my life, when it started affecting my children. I was in the middle of another sob-fest, thinking everyone was asleep (I always tried to wait until everyone was in bed to start watching the news and crying my eyes out). Out came my then 2 year old son, looking very concerned. I felt ashamed that he caught me, and fearful that he'd be worried. He came to over to the couch, and softly stroked my hair. In his sweet, little voice he whispered, "It's gonna be okay, Mommy." I still burst into tears when I talk about that!!!! It was like I was smacked upside the head, or something. I finally realized that my behavior was impacting my precious children, and that I had to make some changes quickly. One night, while in a chat room online, I was having a good conversation with many of the people there. I finally confessed to everyone that I was severely depressed because of what had happened, and I asked if anyone could help me. That's how desperate I was-I begged complete strangers for any kind of help. That's when a lady instant messaged me, asking if I knew the Lord. Sure, I knew about Him. I knew what Jesus Christ did for mankind, and I always believed in that much. She introduced the Sinners' Prayer to me, where a person asks for Christ's forgiveness, and invites Him into their hearts so that they may have eternal life because of His sacrifice on the cross. We said the prayer together, via a little chat window. I began to cry as I said it aloud-this was me literally crying out to God for help. As I finished the prayer, I literally felt a weight fly from my shoulders-that is the only way I can describe it. It felt like a bird that had been perched on my shoulders had just flown away. I was trembling, scared, and excited all at once. I just crumbled, falling to my knees. I sobbed, "Thank you, thank you," over and over feeling peace fill my mind and body. It was SO incredible!!! That was in November of 2001. I was baptized in February of 2002. I still struggle with things here and there. I still make so many mistakes. I still have my down days, my bummer days. Some major things are different, though. I am at peace, and I no longer live in fear. I also have no need to fear, because I know that life goes on after the life on this earth ends. I know that God loves me, loves us all, and will take care of us. I know that God has a special plan for my life, just as He did for all those that died on September 11th. It gives me comfort knowing they did not die in vain. Their tragic losses brought this country together, and made us stronger than ever! I felt at peace seeing how we as a country reacted to the tragedy. It made me proud to see the lines going out the doors of the military recruiting offices, the American flags, the kindness towards strangers. For once, we were all united, as we always should have been. That was God hard at work, turning what was meant for evil and using it for good. Now, I fear we as a country are getting back to our complacent state again. Too much fighting with one another to see the big picture. It scares me sometimes, but at least now I can pray about it and know that God is bending an ear to me. I don't know how or if I could go on without God's love in my life. I am forever changed. I will no longer fear for my life, my family's life, or anyone else's. He promises us a hope and a future...He's revealed Himself as very trustworthy, so I'm going to believe Him. I've heard people say that this was New York's tragedy, why does everyone else care, etc., etc. I am thousands of miles away from New York, but let me tell you, it hit home. It might as well have been in my front yard. We all suffered right along with New York. I am still affected by it-in good ways and in bad ways. I still have the flashbacks, the deep sadness, and the nightmares, but at the same time I'm a better, more patient and loving parent and wife. I appreciate my family and others in my life. I cherish life more. I am more compassionate. I now live life day to day. I live each day as it will be my last. Funny how a horrible tragedy can straighten a person's priorities. In many ways, the tragedy on September 11th saved my life. So many died, yet I was born into new life. That's something I think about often, and will always think about and be thankful for. Forever. I was at home having breakfast with my wife ,Carol, when the phone rang and our daughter Michele was on the line. She asked if we were watching TV. My wife said no and wanted to know the reason. Michele informed us that a plane hit the World Trade Center. I turned on the television and saw a news flash that said "The World Trade Center was hit by a plane". We saw the plane hit the tower and thought it was a replay but,it was not the second tower got struck.We yelled out loud God Save the people. We could not believe what happened and wondered who could have done this to us. I feel very lucky because the train they found empty underneath the Twin Towers was the train I always used to ride to get to work. As My sister said "Mom always told us that things happen for a reason" and I believe our mother was right. I guess it was not my time to leave this Earth. However, when I was in my eigth grade American History class, My teacher got a phone call. When he hung up he turned on the TV to MSNBC and we watched as the first tower burned. Soon, the tower fell and the second burning tower was left with smoke billowing out of it. When the second tower came crashing to the ground, it was hard to believe that terrorists had actually taken out the World Trade Center. It was difficult to imagine that where two amazingly high buildings had once stood, all that was left was debris and ash. After the second tower fell, the power went out in my school. We had no idea if there had been a terrorist attack in Florida or not since there wasn't any power. Everybody got really quiet and the teachers made us get under our desks as the school went to Code Red. The power came back after about five minutes or so and we were all relieved that there hadn't been an attack in Florida. To the Police, firemen and volunteres i cannot be more thankful to you. My story begins when I woke up in the morning and was getting ready to go to school,when suddenly my dad called and said that he just found out that somebody attack the World trade center i quikly turned on the tv and i was shocked to see smoke coming out of one of the towers and i watched a another plane coming and hitting the second tower. I was shocked i could not believe it. It was really horrible to see the secomd plane go in the sound was like a really really big bomb blast. I was stunned for a few moments and i just couldn't believe what just happened in front of my eyes and i went to school after that and everything had changed in school everybody was really sad and i was too because i have never seened anything like this before i have heard of these things in history but never encountered one till september 11, 2001. He was listening to a news broadcast on the radio that sounded serious so I asked him, "Has something bad happened"? His normally happy and friendly expression was grim as he told me that America was under attack. I turned on my television just as the second plane crashed into the WTC and my blood turned cold. I watched in horror for several minutes and as I realized how many babies weren't going to see their parents again I simply had to get my own babies near me. I picked my sons up from school and brought them home. That afternoon, we went to a neighborhood church. We sat with our arms around each other and held on like we've never held on before. Our lives were changed forever. We don't go to bed or leave our home without letting each other know how much we love each othe. Every person, every event, every thing that touches our lives now has new meaning to us. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work listening to a book on tape. All of sudden things kind of went crazy. I saw people up in the aisles talking. At first I didn't really pay attention to what was going on. At 9:15, my friend Cathy & I took our break and that is when I first heard that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane.They had a tv on in the cafeteria and we sat and watched them replay footage of the second plane hitting the the second tower. I just sat there in disbelief wanting to make sure my children were all right. They were in school taking the ISTEP tests but as I found out later, they were fine. Around 10:30 our boss called us together for a little meeting. She had told in light of what happened we could go home if we wanted to. I went home and spent the rest of the day watching the coverage on tv transfixed, yet horrorfied. I was so far away but I felt like I needed to do something. The only thing I could do at that point was to pray for all those souls that got caught when the buildings came down...May God rest their souls. My husband called me shortly after the 1st plane hit the World Trade Center - he had heard the news on the radio. I immediately turned on the television. Within a minute or two of turning on the television, the 2nd plane hit. I can still remember saying "Oh my God, Oh my God". I watched throughout the day. I watched coverage of the plane crashing into the Pentagon, the crash in Pennsylvania and the tragic tumbling of both towers. I remember being drawn to all of the news coverage. I felt helpless but felt that the very least I could do was watch the news coverage, listen to stories of survivors and to the stories of families who lost those so dear to them. As I watch the 1 year anniversary coverage, I am so proud to be an American. I am proud of America's courage and faith. I am humbled by the graciousness and dignity of families who lost so much and I admire their strength and their willingness to share stories of the lifes lost. God Bless America and the families who faced such tragedy. May we always remember those lost and the courage of those who saved so many. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was doing some lawnwork and feeling very sorry for myself, because just days before I had lost my job of almost 17 years due to downsizing. When my son came out to tell me about the World Trade Center I thought it was the old news story about the bombing of the Trade Center in the 90's. However, he soon set me straight. After the news sunk in I felt a deep, deep sadness for all the peopledirectly affected and a terrible sense of loss for the citizens of the U.S., because they lost their innocence. Our world would never be the same secure place that it was on September 10,2001. I also felt terribly ashamed, because I could always find another job, however, the people directly affected would never be able to put the shredded pieces of their lives back together.
