Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September is beautiful in suburban New York. September 11 dawned perfectly-no humidity, clear blue skies, 80 ish degrees. Too nice a day to be in school. I was in my Personal Writing class; I heard some mumbling from the students about something going on in New York City, 20 miles southeast of us in Nyack. I shooshed the students and they went back to writing. The principal walked to my door and whispered that a plane had crashed in one of the towers at the World Trade Center. She urged quiet. She left. A few minutes later a security guard yelled down a quiet hallway- there's been a bombing in New York City. The students panicked. Over the loudspeaker, an adult said any student who wanted to leave the classroom could go to a special class. Students were upset as they had relatives or friends in the city. School continued, though we all walked around shell shocked. The phones didn't work. My 15 year old son tried to call me, and couldn't get through. I worried. The school was under a lock in and only those students whose parents who came to pick them up could leave. There was an eerie feeling of shock, fear, unrest and uncertainty. Students were subdued and the halls were strangely quiet between classes. On my free periods, I wandered just as many students did, trying to wrap my mind over the enormity of the situation. Some teachers had radios on in the teacher prep area; I refused to go to the room where a tv was on and students were congregating. I waited until I got home to watch tv. My 15 year old and husband were home watching the major stations who repeatedly showed the bombing, people running from the scene, and the chaos that ensued. I sent my 15 year old to meet my 7 year old at the bus stop. I wanted the tv to be off before he came in. In his elementary school, the bombing had not been discussed. I briefly told him there was a serious accident in New York City. We asked him if he had any questions, but he didn't. It was impossible to get a phone line. I communicated to others over the internet. Somehow, I was able to get through to my sister who lived in Florida, and not to my parents who live five miles away. I remember sitting on the front step on that beautiful early fall night. It was silent outside, like after a snowfall. Perhaps even quieter as there were no planes flying overhead. Trucks that rambled down 9W toward the city had been diverted elsewhere. It was eerie- this quiet and peace. I couldn't sleep that night. I wrote on my computer, filling in black words on the white screen about my concern, my anxiety, my assurance that things would iron themselves out in the morning. The truth began slowly to surface in the morning. The rescue teams were set up to save people- there were no people to save. Thousands were missing. Both towers had collapsed. A brother called from Paris -are you okay? Another brother and a college roommate called from California-are you okay? how is it in your part of the country? what do you know? we haven't heard much? My family members were safe and intact. School resumed as the administration wanted to maintain an air of normalcy. Some students' family members still weren't accounted for. School was quiet... "I know my brother will be all right...he left a message" Paige Crowther said to Tiffany Anderson as they hugged each other on the 11th. Tiffany's dad had also been in the city. Welles wasn't all right. As the days went by, bad news began to emerge. Paige's 24 year old brother hadn't been found. Welles had been my student years earlier and I remembered him as a hard working, yet fun loving young man. Stacey Sennas McGowan didn't call home to her husband and daughters, 4 and 5. Stacey had been a student of mine when I first taught, and while I hadn't seen her since 1976, I could still remember her vibrant, friendly smile and her eagerness always to excel. Una Mc Hugh, one of my children's reading teachers, had just returned from a child care leave. Her husband who'd abandoned a job as an executive to become a NYC firefighter, hadn't returned. Dennis Mc Hugh's wake was the biggest wake I'd ever been. Hundreds of us stood outside on a busy highway as we waited to give Una and her family her condolences. I sent Stacey's parents a letter about how I would remember Stacey as being "forever 13" in my eyes. At her memorial service, the church was so crowded we stood outside. I looked into the photograph of a smiling 38 year old woman who offered so much beauty to the world through her intelligence, her humor, her joy of living and cried. The following day, I attended Welles' service and cried as I listened to his 22 year old sister read his eulogy. I cried for Paige, who a few months later would be in my class and who idolized her big brother. It's been a year. Nyack High School parents, students and staff designed and built a memory garden. I can look at it outside my window. It's outlined in red brick in the shape of a heart. Bushes, perennials and annuals fill the space. My most poignant memory was of Stacey's daughers throwing flowers at the commemoration of the garden. I said to my 10th grade students who had seemed oblivious to the tragedy, "See those little girls. They don't have a mother anymore. Imagine what your life would be like without your mother..." That is the legacy we as Americans must face-a nation forever scarred by the needless deaths of men, women and children. The pointless deaths of business people, chefs, fire fighters, religious people, writers, police, rescue workers, artists...foreigners as well as Americans. I feel hopeful, not fearful. I pray that we will continue to heal, that we will continue to be compassionate, that we will work to create understanding amongst people. We will continue to understand that our similiarities as members of the human race should bind us together. T We should remember how important a smile is, a hug, a hand shake or a kiss can be to promote goodwill. Each day in my local newspaper are listings of people who have been identified. The horror continues for us in suburban New York. But greater than that is HOPE . All of a sudden, a co-worker that had been in the army came running into my office yelling, "There's been a plane that has flown into the Twin Towers!" I said, "I hope that everyone is okay." But then, he came into my office again saying that another plane had been crashed into the WTC and I said, "Oh my God, this is for real!" My co-worker then said that New York is under attack from terrorists. So, to myself I said a prayer. When I got a chance to see it on the news, it hurt me so dearly inside that tears started pouring out of my eyes. I started praying even more than I had been previously. It looked so sad to see people running for their lives. I thought you only see those kinds of things in movies. My prayers are for the children that lost their parents, and I pray that everyone that survived prays even more than they did before this happened. Everyday of our lives counts, and I call every hour and minute a blessing. Even though they claim that Bin Laden did it, the Bible says love thy enemy and it is not for us to judge. This tragedy has brought everyone closer to Christ. My prayers go out to the world. Thats day was going really good then when I walked in to class with my friends our jaws dropped when we say what was on the televvision in the class room, the first thing we heard was that the WTC were on fire because of a plane crash. Then we looked at the teacher adn she was sobbing uncontrolably, adn so that entire day we just watched the news in every class to figure out what was going on. 9-11-02 changed my life so quick and so noticebly. 9-11 made me adn other people see that every one is the same just different color, love is love for no matter who it is adn blood looks the same when it is shed over innocent people. What makes me feel even worse is that NOW is when we fly the flag when we should have been flying it way before 9-11. We were factoring polynomials when another Math teacher,Mr. Mars came into the room saying,"Turn on the news." No one in that class knew about the World Trade Center Towers had been purposely crashed into. By the time everyone had gotten to their third period class we all knew something was wrong. My class was Global Studies. We were watching the CNN news channel. At first I thought that people were just joking around about the World Trade Towers being hit by airplanes. Then I knew it wasn't a joke when I saw the replay of a plane crash into the first tower. A few minutes later a second plane crashed into the second tower. Another plane crashed into the Pentagon at around 9:28 a.m. It was so weird how everything happened so fast. The first plane crashed into the first World Trade Center Tower at about 8:48 a.m. and everything ended before 11:00 a.m. Everyone in my school was so devastated and felt bad for every person that died working at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I was afraid that the Power Project or Niagara Falls might be another target. I had hoped nothing too drastic would happen because it could be the start of World War Three. Maybe it could be the start to any war. Also I hoped that we didn't drop a bomb because someone may retaliate against us and it may never end. It is still weird how everything happened all in one day in the matter of only hours. In less than five hours everything went to pieces and people's lives were destroyed as well. I feel so bad for everything that happened. I hope that we find Osama bin Laden and he pays for what he has done. Even though it was not him that crashed airplanes into the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon, he ordered people to do it. I think that it's sad and stupid to kill yourself for your country. In their own way, these terrorists are like the suicide bombers of Palestine. They both were willing to die and kill people for their country. The impact on my life from the attack was great. I wanted to know what the weather was going to be like a typical day for me. I remember seeing the footage of the first plane hitting the first tower, I stood there in shock, I thought what a horrible accident. Then I saw the second plane hit the second tower and I fell to the ground. I knew at that point this was no accident, I felt scared , terrified at what had happened. I couldnt believe it, we had been attacked; tears began to fall from eyes and I began to shake. I went to work and listened to the radio all day to the reports about what was going on..I heard about the pentagon and I was devastated, those poor innocent people killed for nothing. How could this happen to us? We are a super power for cying out loud! Then the reports of possible terriost action just hit me like ton of bricks. I cried most of the afternoon, as I listened to reports of people jumping from the buildings and the buildings collapsing on many of them still trapped inside. All I wanted to do was go home curl up into a little ball and hide. I remember going home and hugging my children tighter than I ever had and then thinking thank you God for not letting it happen to me. Thank you God for allowing me to live to see my children grow up. Then I felt really guilty I felt that way. I prayed all night for those affected by this tragedy, prayed that they would all be found safe and sound, that no one would be lost. That all the families out there waiting for word on there loved one would recieve good news soon. I remember donating blankets and canned goods and teddy bears to relief funds for the people in need. September 11th will be a day I will never forget, it will live in my heart and memory forever as well as everyone elses I'm sure. You hit us once shame on us, you hit us twice you pay the price. Tell us your story: We saw the horror on television, after hearing 'rumors'...my friend and I walked down to our lunch room, and as we walked in, we saw the 1st tower smoking. Then, the room went silent as we saw a plane come from seemingly nowhere and slam into the 2nd tower. We were all stunned. Our thoughts and prayers were with our business associates at Empire Blue Cross. They lost fewer employees than others on higher floors, thank God. My reaction, as always is to write poetry. A watch, a camera, Only these remain Sad souvenirs. What can make us whole again? A war? More violence? Other shattered lives? Thousands of other Innocent victims? As I wept for the Americans who were injured and dreadfully killes, I also wept for the Perpetrators! You may ask yourself "Why is this woman weeping for the enemy?" My reason is clear and very simple...HATE! HATE was the root cause of the September 11th tragedy. HATE is a disease that spread throughout the perpetrators hearts and souls like a cancer. The only cure for this horrible disease called HATE is LOVE, followed by kindness, forgiveness (not forgetfulness), and harmony. How terribly sad it must be to HATE so much that you want to actually kill another human being. In closing, I hope that we all worldwide will never forget what HATE has done to people in the past (violence, rape, racial issues, etc.). Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The attacks occured on a Tuesday which is one of my days off from school (University of Baltimore)so I was sleeping in. As I was sleeping my mother came down and woke me and said "I think I sould tell you what has happened this morning". At that time the first plane had already hit one of the towers. I went upstairs to the kitchen to watch the TV and saw smoke pouring out of the tower. I counld not believe my eyes. My first reaction was that this must have been an accident. It seemed as though it was something right out of Hollywood. However, as a pilot of small planes myself, I realized that there is no way that this could be an accident. It was a clear day, and it was not a prescribed air traffic pattern. In other words, no plane would have been anywhere near those towers. It was at that moment that the second plane hit the other tower. I could not believe my eyes. This had to be a nightmare. I was glued to the TV for the remainder of the day and a short while later I heard that another plane had crashed into the Pentagon. I, like the rest of America, had no idea what was going on. I felt a tremendous amount of anger as the day wore on and suspicion turned to Osama Bin Ladan. I wanted revenge. For the remainder of the day I thought of nothing else and founds it hard to do anything else. This was the case for roughly two weeks. It was such a shock to my system. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I would like to start with a brief history on my expreience with the World Trade Center. Two years ago, my family and I took a vacation to our Nation's Capital, and New York City. We planned on visiting New York last, because we were going to spend the most time there. We took the train into the city, and that was the very first time I ever saw the Twin Towers. They were incredible, and intimidating. I was so excited, because that was all I really was concerned about visiting in New York. I just wanted to see the Towers. I still have my ticket from the 'The Top of the World'. Two years, one month and 37 days later, at 8:25 ( utah time) my mom came into my room with a look on her face that I had never seen before. "Katie" she said...." I think you should get up, something has happened in New York, a plan just flew into the North Tower of the World Trade....the building is on fire, and people are jumping." I had a TV in my room, but I jumped out of bed and ran down to the kitchen. Moments later, the second plane hit the South Tower. I just stood there, my mom was behind me with her hands covering her mouth and she didn't speak. I watched NBC's coverage.....it was unthinkable. I looked over at my refrigerator, there was a picture of myself and my family on the observation deck of the South Tower. Although I didn't know anyone who lost their life, I too, did loose something incredibly important to me. Those building represented alot of strength and freedom. I never took that trip to the 'Top of the World' for granted, I hold it dear to my heart, I send my strength and love and support to those in need of it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work that day, my husband a police officer was working at the aviation unit. He called me just after the the first plane hit the wtc, he was telling what happened when I heard some one in the back ground yell OH my God another plane hit the second tower. My husband told me to go turn on the tv. I told my boss what was happening and the radio started broadcasting the news. I work for the District Court and we started to get calls about whether we were still opened. Then we heard the news about the Pentagon and a missing plane. It was very unsettling because we live close to Washington DC. I remember calling my mom to see if she was okay and my nephew who was four at the time answered the phone and told me planes had crashed into the buildings. We were dismissed from work early and I made my way to my mom's house because my husband was still at work. I remember getting to my brother's house where my mom was and my nephew taking a picture out of my mom's wallet of my husband standing next to the police plane and telling me Uncle Pat's plane had crashed in the buildings. It was not until my husband picked me up from my brother's house that my nephew new that Uncle Pat was alright. I feel so fortunate that no one in my family was harmed, and so devestated for those who lost loved ones. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: But, I was asked the previous Friday if I could arrive at work a day early. So off I went to Newark Airport on 9/10 and got on United 93 (which I have flown so many other times as well) and flew oblivious as to what would happen the next day off to San Fran. and then on to Fresno. At 5:50 AM (west coast time) my friend Tim calls me from Boston on my cellphone to tell me a plane has just hit the WTC - he thinks I'm at Newark getting ready to board my San Francisco flight. I explain the bosses request to get there a day early and tell him I'm already on the west coast. While Tim is on the phone (he is in his car) I turn on the news and look on in disbelief at the burning building. I tell him I'll call him back and phone my friend Scott who lives at 21 West Street (which is 2 blocks down from the WTC) with his girlfriend. He has a penthouse that looks directly at the Twin Towers. As the phone rang I look at the TV and see the second plane hit the other tower. What at first was a question in my mind is now obviously all too clear - this is a terrorist attack on our country. Scott is out on his balcony and witnesses the entire event. He runs past the ringing phone and frantically runs down 33 flights of stairs. He is off to look for his girlfriend who was running in the park across the street as she did daily. I watch as the tragedy continues. I call my co-worker (who is still asleep in her hotel room) and tell her of the events that are unfolding - she turns on the TV and cannot believe her eyes. I tell he I will call her back shortly. Tim is now on his way home (he is a reservist and fears the worst)and I call him back on his cellphone. I tell him about the second tower (which he knew about)and suddenly the picture from the Pentagon appears. When I tell him of the attack on the Pentagon he reacts in horror and tells me he has to go. Basically, I sit in disbelief and horror for the next 4 hours. I see the crash site outside of Pittsburgh, Watch over and over the pictures of the Twin Towers crumbling to thier death. The carnage that is occuring across our peaceful country and wonder what animal is responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people. Like many, I fear the worst. I envision 50,000 people trapped in the Twin Towers, think about the subway staition and shops below that I so frequently visited. I think about retailiation. After 4 hours I can't take anymore. I feel sick, depressed and try not to think about all the people I know who work at the WTC. I reach my co-worker and we head out to lunch. We will go to work for a few hours afterwards it is decided. Fixed on the television at the restuarant, we continue to look at the ongoing events. They have now identified the planes that have crashed and advise that most of the other planes flying around the U.S. are down except for a few (which still had me worried). I reached into my pocket to look at my itinerary. Out came my original ticket on Flight 93 for September 11th. I looked at it, handed it to my co-worker and started to cry. By a stroke of luck, I am still here. That moment will forever be engrained in my memory. When I was able to get home 13 days later (our company had a 10 day travel ban - stay where you are until the dust settles)I found out that only 3 people I knew perished in the attacks. The horror of it all continued in the cleanup. I volunteered to work at the Red Cross respite center at the Marriott. A mere month after the attacks, I stood at Ground Zero and looked on in disbelief. The fires were still burning, the pile of rubble, although smaller was still 5-6 stories tall. Underground fires burned everywhere. The smell of burning flesh stained the air. The carnage continued. I cried. I worked at Ground Zero for 2 weekends. It is impossible to describe, unless you are standing 10 feet from where the front door of the North Tower was, what it looked like. Grey dust and rusted metal everywhere. Decimation. Work stops. They have found another body. The surrounding buildings had the faces ripped off as if by a horrible monster. I seek revenge. Now, a year later, the cleanup is done, the bodies accounted for, the quest to rid the world from terrorism continues. It will be a long hard battle but it must be done to insure our safety and the safety of future generations. May God bless all those who perished in these senseless attacks. I didn't know what happened until the teachers started talking about it. I still didn't get what happened, all I knew was that some planes hit buildings. When I got home my mom and dad explained what happened, they had told me that planes hit the World Trade Center and another hit the Pentagon. I didn't even know what the World Trade Center was until that day. All day long we were looking on the internet for picture and we also watched the news. We called almost everyone in our family to find out more and to make sure they were ok. I asked my friends and they asked me about what happened we knew that it wasn't an accident. Later that day we heard that it was a terrorist attack, someone planned this. We only had a clue who it was and the next day we found out that it was him. I realize that other people were hurt much more than i was. But it was hard for all of us. Watching it from your TV or from the street, it was equally astonishing. Watching as people jumped hundreds of feet to thier death because they didn't want to burn. The people on the planes. The people in the building, fighting to get out to safety. It was definitly the most tragic event i have ever come across in my life. And millions of others can say the same. I just wanted to express my feelings, just let it all out. Thanks for listening. He said that a terrible thing had just happened, and went on to explain it. The next thing I knew, all of the teachers were watching it on their tv's. It was crazy, and I can't imagine being one of the people whose family of loved ones were in that building. I feel for everyone. It was my wife, telling me to turn on the TV, that a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. I did not think that much of it. I envisioned a small prop plane. I turned on the TV to get a look, just as I was did, the second plane hit. That was no prop plane, It was a commercial jet. What about the people in those planes, the towers? Soon after that, there was word of a plane hitting the Pentagon. That's when fear came over me. "What's next?" I thought. What do I do? I will remember that day forever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I witnessed history at the Marlboro Middle School in Massachusetts. I had a normal school day. We had to go back to our homerooms from my science class for no reason. When we got back, my teacheer told us what happened. She turned on the television to watch the news and then realized she couldn't show it, so she turned it off. We sat at our desks for the rest of the day. We spent about an hour talking about whether or not we knew any people in New York. On the way home on the bus, some people were sad. Others were joking around, not knowing how serious it was. When I got off the bus, I went to my friends house because my Mom and Dad wee not home from work yet. When I got there, we turned on the television to see what was happening. We saw the news on almost every channel. Since September 11 2001 , my life has changed. Now I am more thankful for firefighters and policemen. I also realized how many people are willing to help other people.Now I am more aware that there are other countries that don't like us. If I see someone tring to do something wrong, now, I try to get someone to stop them. Thats where I was and how I felt on September 11, 2001. Tell us your story: I had bought a computer only about a month before, and was in my den going through the day's e-mail when I began to see posts about "this terrible event on TV." So I went into the living room and turned on NBC. Everything had been pre-empted by then for live coverage. Both towers had been hit but were still standing. It took a while for me to get up to speed on what had occurred, but I was watching when the first one fell. My mother and I kept the TV on all that day and all evening, till 11 or 12. We even ate in front of it. We had *never* done that, not even during the four days after JFK's assassination. The next day as soon as we were awake it went on again and stayed on. We must have been glued to that set for at least three days. There wasn't much we could do to help, but we sent a bag of thick clean socks and a couple of cans of beef stew to the rescue workers when a collection truck set up in front of the downtown mall, and I called the ASPCA to ask what was being done for neighborhood animals. All through the first day I kept alternating between the living room and the den, where I was still online. Several of my groups set up roll calls--"Is everybody OK?"--and I responded to all of them. I didn't know anyone who was in the Towers, but I have a girlfriend who did, and I don't think she has been able to go back to NYC since the last funeral she attended. I have always been a strong patriot (during the Vietnam War I was a hawk), and I don't think that has changed. I display an American flag in the front window of my apartment (just a little one, but it's a flag), and I intend to keep it there until radical Islamic terrorism is utterly crushed. Yet I don't blame Muslims as a whole for what happened. I know the terrorists are a minority, a "lunatic fringe." I *do* think we might make greater strides against them if their own people would help us more. Occasionally I'll read about some new wrinkle in Homeland Security and be a bit disturbed, but none of it has really affected me directly, and I doubt it will. I haven't changed my lifestyle because I don't believe that my town is important enough to be targeted, and I don't travel, so the likelihood of my being involved in an attack seems very small. I don't claim to know whether the Bush response was the very best one, but I *do* think that only by bringing prosperity and democracy to the Middle East can we even begin to cut the legs out from under the terrorist movement, and I'm quite sure that the terrorists themselves understand nothing but violence. He told me he wasn't supposed to come home till 9-11, but something kept telling him to go home now. Thank God he did!! he is a single father of 3 year old twins, and had been staying in a hotel just a block from the Twin Towers... I guess his guardian angel was working overtime that day.
