Tell us your story: That morning, while on my regular commute taking Toll Road, I was listening to the radio and couldn't find a station was playing music. All of the dj's were talking, and finally I gave up and listened. As soon as I realized what was going on I became very worried for our country. As soon as I got to work I called my friends and family to make sure they were alright. My mother and father worked for United Airlines, my little sister is an army reservist and I know many people in the services and I couldn't help but think of them and their families because I knew they would be directly affected. September was a very busy month for my company and everyone had tons of work to complete, but nothing got done that day. We all listened to NPR and checked various news websites for updates. We were allowed to leave work early, but I stayed until 7 because I needed to keep from thinking about what had happened that morning. In the weeks that followed, my older sister was laid off and my younger sister was forced to wear rubber gloves when sorting mail at work. I haven't changed my routines. When I travel, I plan on flying the friendly skies as always. I feel no anger towards those of middle-eastern decent. In terrible situations I try to look for a silver lining. I feel so proud each time I see a flag on someone's car or in their front lawn. I think of the courage of the passengers whenever a plane passes over head. But when my teacher turned on the television, and I saw what was happeneing, I was fightened. I thought to myself, "How could someone do such a horrible thing to someone else" Then the television said that a plane had hit the pentagon. I got rantic because I thought that my brother was supposed to be there that day. Which he was, but reluctantly didn't go. I called my mom crying not knowing if he was okay or not. I got a hold of him and was relieved that he was alright. He showed me a picture of the layout of the pentagon, and showed where he would've been in the building, and it showed that he would've been basically right where the plane hit. I feel so sorry for the people who lost family and friends, but i'm also glad that I wasn't one of those people. When I got there, the television was on and my entire class was just standing there, staring at the TV, and watching the planes go through the towers. After a little while, we had to go to a bus evacuation. The bus drivers told us that planes had flown into the World Trade Centers, and that they were not there anymore. He also told us that the planes were hijacked. Throughout the whole day, I was scared. When I went home, I turned on the television and watched it until I went to sleep. It was very scary because, when I was watching the news, they would show people jumping from the windows and you could also see debris falling everywhere until both towers were gone. It was the scariest thing I have ever seen because it was happening in real life. It wasn't fake. My life has changed since September 11th. Now I actually know what it truly means to be patriotic and loving to our country. Before September 11th, I never thought something like that could ever happen and I definitely didn't expect it to. I never thought just a few people could do so much damage to a country, but now I know that just one person can do all that damage. I think a lot of things should be remembered about September 11th. We should remember all the innocent people that died in the buildings and on the planes. The firefighters should definitely be remembered because they risked their lives going up into the Towers to get people out. Also, all the volunteers that helped out and everyone that contributed to help get people out and to help clean up should be remembered. The Twin Towers will always be remembered and all the families who lost people close to them should always be remembered too. On further exam, almost everybody was near the radio and tv's. I was shocked into reality as I also saw live coverage on a big screen as the second tower was struck. It's ironic; I was in SAMS when the Challenger exploded. When they mentioned the Pentagon, I thought of my cousin Karen Wagner. (She did not make it out of the fire there.) About 6 pm on 9/11 I went outside in our backyard to feel the green grass with my feet and the skies were silent. As many of you may know, Lincoln, Nebraska is below a major east-west flight way. Back when all planes were prop, Lincoln was considered the half-way mark for fliing across America, anyway, my eyes followed my ears and I noticed 2 F-16's accompaniing a very large jumbo jet. It appeared to be fliing west right in line with Lincoln's mainstreet, "O" street. That was Air Force One. I said a prayer of hope and went back inside my home to be with my family. I had went to my first period gym class and played flag foot ball, nothing too interesting happened. Afterwards I changed out of my gym clothes and the bell rang to go to second hour. Once I arrived to Mr. Stevens 8th grade English class he was talking with my Algebra teacher, I didnt make much of it at the time. After my Algebra teacher left the classroom he turned the T.V. on and told the class to be quiet because something very seriouse was going on. The class didnt listen to him at first, because we didnt know just yet what was so seriouse. He then explained to us that one of the twin towers had been hit by an air plane. The class immediatly stopped talking and started paying attention to the news. A few kids in the class started crying because they had relatives who worked in the tower or around the tower. The news kept showing replays of the plane crashing into the building. It seemed so unreal, I found it hard to believe something like that had happened. As the school day progressed I learned that yet another plane had hit the second tower. Immediatly everyone knew that it was no longer a horrible accident but a terrorist attack on the United States. Not all of my teachers wanted to watch the news because it sadened them too much or because they didnt know if our parents would appreciate us watching all of what was going on. Once I got home from school my family had a big discussion on what had happened. Seeing everything that happened on September 11, 2001 was one of the most shocking things ever. About a quarter to eight in the morning one of my regular customers can running and screaming into my Dry Cleaning store, "Turn on the television! Don't you have a television in here? Turn on your radio! There was a plane that just crashed into the World Trade Center in New York!" He was so frantic that he scared me! I was so devistated by the news he was telling me, and I was so unsure of what to think. I knew it was for real! I then turned on the television, after he left, and I watched in amazement, to my eyes. I couldn't believe that this was actually happening! I had never been to the East Coast before, but I had always wanted to go there. Later on that day as I was watching the news coverage, I started to cry; uncontrolably. I wasn't sure why I was crying, but I knew that I felt bad for all of those familes out there, with loved ones that were at work, or even on that, well then, those airplanes. Later on during the next year, in March I won a trip to Atlantic City in March to see one of my favorite country-western singers, Alan Jackson. It was a great trip, but also a scary trip for me, considering it was to the East Coast, around the 6th month anniversary of the terriost attacks, and I had never flown before. I met alot of people in Philadelphia, and made friends. Over Memorial Day weekend, my sister and I decieded to drive to Philadelphia to see friends. We were also hoping to go to Ground Zero, both times, but unfortunetly time did not permit. So we made plans to go back out to Philadelphia in August, so we did go in August. In August we were able to go to New York and see Ground Zero. I walked all around the site and took tons of pictures, and bought souvieners. I had a hard time walking around and seeing the sites without sheding a tear. It was so hard to see all that with out crying, it was so unbelievable, and so breathe taking! I am really happy that I was able to see Ground Zero up close and in person. It is so different than on television! The sites and pictures that I saw and took, still wonder around my mind, and it is still hard for me to cope with what I saw and experienced on my last trip to New York. I can only imagine what those people who experienced it first hand, see and think and cope and deal with everyday of their life. I know how hard it is for me to deal with, that I can only imagine how hard it is for them. All of a certian, the Secretary to my supervisor, after receiveing a telephone call, said we all needed to get to a television, the World Trade Center had been hit by an airplane. This was very devestating to the office because the secretary to my supervisor worked in the world trade centers for a number of years before she and her husband relocating to Atlanta from New York City. Seeing that devestation, and later hearing of the bombing on the pentegon, my whole day was turned upside down. All I wanted was to be near my family and get my son from school. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: After 5 years, I still remember 9-11-01 as if it was yesterday. What I wrote then, I still feel now. I mourn the close to 3000 who died that day and the close to 3000 who have died since in Afghanistan and Iraq in a effort to prevent another attack. I feel that both wars are necessary to keep us free. I strongly believe that our government has stopped other attempts - ones we will never know about in an effort to keep secret our means of finding out about them. Knowing that we are the target of those who hate our way of life means that we have to be more diligent. I hope we can keep all of our liberties alive, but I would be willing to curb some to be safe. The most important ones - from the Bill of Rights - I believe are safe. The ones that we have come to enjoy since those days in the 1780's - I think we may need to give a little on. But it won't make much difference to the people we are - Americans are the most resiliant people on earth and will adapt and find better ways that we would never have thought of prior to 9-11. I think history will look back in another 10-15 years, see the struggles we all went through, and applaud us for our perserverance, faith, and yes the dissention of the time, because America and the world will be stronger and more peaceful. We will be better because of 9-11 and our reaction to it. And the future generations will thank us as we thank the World War II generation. (I lived in Northern Virginia during and in the immediate years following the attacks. That area, and probably NY,NY are the ones most affected by the events. My county lost 22 people in the attacks - the most in the area. But they are stronger, closer to another, and better than before. Work required a move to the Midwest. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of Sept. 11, 2001, I was recovering in the hospital from a C-section. I had given birth to my second son 10 hours prior to the first tower being struck. I had no idea what was happening as I was feeling quite ill. My doctor had called me to see how I was and had asked if I knew what was happening. When I told her I had not yet had the television on, she suggested for my mental well-being not to turn it on. My husband came to see me a little while later and by that time he informed me all flights were grounded. He was really upset as one of his sisters lives 10 blocks from the WTC and the other in Boston and had not heard from either of them. (it turns out, the sister in NYC did not even now what was happening, she slept through both towers collapsing) It was probably weeks before I was able to turn on the T.V. and see the horrific images of that day. I felt so much guilt if I basked in the joy of my newborn son. It took a long time to get over that guilt, I still don't know if I am completly over it. I am brought to tears whenever I see Lisa Beamer on the news with her newborn child who will never meet her heroic father in this life or whenever I see stories of the infants born after 9/11 and are fatherless. September 11, 2001 changed a lot of things for a lot of people and I pray for all the families who lost loved ones, that they find comfort in knowing that one day they will be reunited in God's wonderful Kingdom. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: In the early hours of September 11, 2001, I called my parents from where I was living in Maryland. I was extremely sick and needed to go home. My dad left Allentown, PA around 2 am to drive to MD and back to PA. On September 11, 2001 I was eating breakfast at my kitchen table when the phone rang. It was my next door neighbor calling to tell my parents and I that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. My parents and I rushed into the family room and turned on the TV. The sight of fire and smoke coming from the tower was unbelievable. Then the unimaginable happened--I saw the second plane collide with the other World Trade Center tower. I stood there in disbelief and wondered what was going to be attacked next. Minutes later, it was announced that a plane had struck the Pentagon. I recall crying and shaking in fear. How could this happen to our country? Who would commit such an atrocity? The attack on the Pentagon was particularly tough for me to handle. I had moved to the Washington, DC area in June 2001 to work for the Navy in DC. I obtained the job because of an internship I completed in Spring 2001 at the JAG office. The office was grateful that I was hired , due to lack of staff in the office. They knew I needed a job, so they were able to convince those in charge of hiring personnel to hire me. Basically, they did me a favor by hiring me, and I did them a favor by helping to lessen the work load. Unfortunately, my job was not a permanent position. My position as a paralegal was full-time temporary. On my second day at my new job, my boss talked with me about a vacancy at the Pentagon, doing the same work, full-time permanent with benefits. He said that he hoped I would stay in the DC office but told me the Pentagon would be a better opportunity. That night, I decided to stay at my current position, even though the Pentagon was an amazing offer. I felt that I should be loyal to those who worked so hard to get me into the government position. Well, that turned out to be a life saving decision. The woman who was hired for the position I was offered was killed. If I would not have remained loyal to those who helped me, I would be dead today. Through this year, I have had a tough time dealing with how close I was to being a casualty. One decision saved my life. My heart does out to everyone who perished and to everyone who lost a loved one in this attack. They are all heros, especially the rescue workers who lost/ risked their lives, and the passengers on Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, PA. Without the bravery these individuals displayed on that horrible day, many more lives would have been lost. God bless the victims and their families. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 we were in the second day of a worship conference called "Journey Into His Presence" being held at the First Baptist Church, Euless, TX - a suburb between Dallas and Fort Worth. This was a conference for pastors and ministers of music to improve their worship services and their working relationships. I did not have any early responsibilities at the church that morning, so I had not left my house yet when my sister, who lives in Tulsa, OK, called to ask if I was watching the news. As soon as I saw what was happening I rushed to the church where they had just announced to the conference what was happening. It was soon obvious that many of our registrants were not going to be able to get home that night so I called a local motel and reserved a block of rooms in the name of the church. At the lunch break we put CNN on the large screens at the front of the church and we realized we needed to close the conference early. By that time, the registrants were asking what they should do at their churches on the coming Sunday so we turned the conference into one of helping these ministers plan for their services that night, Wednesday night and on Sunday. We closed with a time of prayer for those injured and the families who had lost loved ones. We then turned to the task of informing our own church members of a special prayer service for that evening. Through a phone tree and announcements on media and word of mouth, we had almost 3,000 people in our service that evening of 9/11 with over 200 in the choir. The next morning I took my daughter to high school for band practice at 6:45 AM. When we arrived at the school I saw a circle of at least 25 or 30 high school students (not an adult in sight) heads bowed in prayer for our nation. Later that day (9/12) I drove past a business in downtown Grapevine and as I got closer the traffic came to a halt. Just then a man ran up to the car with an armload of T-shirts printed with GOD BLESS AMERICA. As he approached each car he threw a T-shirt in every open window saying "Wear it with pride. God bless America!" Tell us your story: We just moved to a new house in Vancouver BC Canada and we didn;t have our cable tv up yet, then when I came into my 10th grade math class in the morning we watched with horror on the tv in our classroom what was happening live, I watched in fear as the two towers collapsed, it seemed to strange to be happening, I didn't believe it was happening, kids were in tears in our class. There is this wonderful hill--a rise from water level--that lines the coast of NJ. Driving this route allows the most beautiful view of the entire skyline of the City. It's breathtaking. As I drove from the top of the hill down the bridge to get to River Road, I always scanned the City. Nothing, on this day, was amiss. I joined the ranks of commuters amongst the streets and buildings of Hoboken. I negociated the traffic and as I waited at a stoplight, I heard the radio announcer say, "oh, my God, something's going on at the World Trade Center! The whole top of it is on fire!" Though I was still in a very dense area of Hoboken, I happened to be situated at the only place in a long stretch of road, which allowed a clear view of the Trade Centers. And, there it was. I could see, clearly, the sideways gash in the building and the top of the building had just started to smoke. I got on the cell phone and called my husband who was still at home (but who had planned a trip into the City that noon, via the WTC). I called my parents in Texas and assured them neither of us were in the WTC. None of them knew of the tragedy yet. I pulled the car over (strange that many cars just continued along the road, seemingly unaware of the situation), I got out along with another man who had just pulled up. We stood on the shore watching the billowing smoke and ticking through our friends' names in our mind, who might be there. We talked little. Then, down the shore, and only for a moment, I could see it coming. I thought it was a bird and I thought, for only a split second, how peaceful that bird was not knowing or comprehending the horror that humans were suffering right now. It turned, like a cobra ready to strike and I knew, instantly what the entire thing represented, what it would mean for me and my family, and what it would mean to our country. Then nothing. Only the sound of the waves from the river and the seagulls above were heard. I waited for the shock wave of the impact to hit us. Then I heard it. Not the sound of the impact, but the distant screams--they were my screams. I actually finished the drive to work--though I don't remember how. Once there, I walked to the window, the same window from which I had recently admired the City view. Soon, it was gone. Everything. The horror obscured by a veil of white which was slowly encompassing lower Manhattan. I got home after a 2 1/2 hour drive. Hugged my husband for a long time and then sat in a stupor and watched the TV. We walked, as if on a pilgrimage, to the shore--along with many, many others. We all watched from the shore as tower 7 fell, and again, there was not a sound--only the sparkle of glass as it exploded. There were newly-homeless among us, and many gathered to hear their stories of escape and terror. Some had never been to New Jersey before and didn't know how to get back, or where to go when they got there. People were offering their apartments as a place to stay, or just for a shower and a place to eat. Many had secured the last remaining hotel rooms, choosing to share rooms with total strangers. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work as a kindergarten teacher in Falls Church, Virginia. As many others will say, the day began very normally and as usual. Around 9:00 am I left my classroom to use the restroom and noticed that there was a lot of activity in the office. As I was leaving the restroom I asked someone what has happened. They told me that two planes had crashed into the trade towers and that they thought that it was a terrorist act. The severity did not hit me immediately. I returned to my room and progressed with my day. A short time later a member of the administration came to my classroom to inform me that we were having to go into lockdown mode and that there should not be anyone in the halls. The entire time that this horrendous thing was unfolding, I was not allowed to turn on the television or the radio to find out what was going on and I could call my family to locate everyone. As the day progressed 10 of my 21 students left school early. It wasn't until the end of the day that I was able to find out how much had really happened. After returning to school, the administration called a staff meeting to commend us on how well we had responded to this tragedy that was so near to us. The PTA of our school also bought each member of our staff a white rose as thanks for keeping their children so safe. Throughout the school year our school did many activities to show our partriotism. We presented the pentagon an American flag made out of teh right hand of each student and staff member of our school. We also participated with a local radio station and said the Pledge of Alligiance and sang the national anthem as a schoolwide event. Then my math teacher from last year comes into the guidance office, and said to me "Tim, the world trade center was just hit by a jet...". I was like o' my god. He told me that the news said the jet flew off of course and accidentaly hit the tower. I was amazed, but I didn't really think too much of it at that time. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The day of September 11 dawned like any other day in school: up early, homework, tests, and after school activities. My fellow students and I had no notion of what would happen later that day. I remember sitting in my P.E. class and hearing that the Twin Towers were crumbling and we were under attack. It almost seemed as if the world stopped turning. Students were asked to proceed to there classes like usual, but there was a terrible feeling of unease. I later found out the Pentagon had been hit by an airplane as well and that one crashed in Pennsylvania. I went from my gym class to the drama room with a group of my friends to use the phone of our theatre teacher. Many of us had parents who worked for the government or were in the Pentagon at the time of the attack. The phone lines were so busy that it was impossible for us to get through. I eventually was able to connect to my house and had a brief conversation with my mom. My dad works in the Pentagon so I asked her if she had heard from him and if she knew if he was ok. She told me that she had no news of him, but to say a prayer for him and everyone else that was in the building. The rest of the day was tense and frightening not knowing whether or not my dad escaped. It was not until later that night that I found out that he was well and left the building after securing his office. Family members and friends called from all over the country and world to make sure that my dad and co-workers were alright. Although my dad was safe, there were many students that were not so lucky. This horrific act of terrorism rudely awakened me to the reality of what the world is like. An attack of this magnitude shook the nation to its core, but we did not and will not give in to terrorism. If we give in to terrorism then the innocent lives that were lost on September 11 will have died in vain. We can not, as a nation, allow the brave men and women of September 11 be forgotten.
