I had just walked in when I saw the tail end of the plane hit the first tower. I couldn't believe what I had just seen. I ran to my desk and called my mom and said to put the news on. Everyone from the other side of the floor was rushing over. I stood in the empty conference room in front of my desk just starring at the huge flames, thinking... this looks like an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. As I watched the flames and smoke from the first tower become bigger, the second plane came from behind and this huge fireball exploded right in front of me. My body was frozen, I couldn't even speak. I heard my bosses yelling to everyone-- we are evacuating the floor, please leave now. I just stood there,until my friend came in and grabbed me out. When we got down to the street, it was total craziness. All you heard was people screaming and trying to find someone to be with. People didn't know where to run, but they were running. There were massive flames and smoke everywhere. I decided to leave when I saw people jumping out of the building. All I could think of was my two kids. I had to rush home to them. I must of caught the last E train out from downtown which took me to 42nd Street and I literally ran acrosstown to the #7 train to Queens. The people on the train were clueless until some passanges received the news on their beepers. With each creep through the tunnel, I prayed I would make it to the next. I parked my car in Long Island City, near the Midtown Tunnel. As I was waiting in my car for the light to change, I turned and saw the tower collapse--complete devistation for me. I really felt like I was in a war zone. All I wanted was to hug and kiss my kids and go home. It felt like forever. At 11:30 am, I picked up the baby from the babysitters and came home. My other son was safe in school. I stayed in my house for three days after September 11th and didn't return to work until September 20th. For weeks I had nightmares and couldn't sleep. This tradegy was so very sad for so many people. In November, 2001, I lost my job because of these attacks. I haven't been in the city since, but I am home safe and sound with my two children. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On 9/11/01 I was at work as an elementary guidance counselor in the Conneaut School District(Pennsylvania). The school psychologist arrived sometime after nine asking us if we heard what happened. We hadn't. I remember calling home to talk to my husband who was with our 1 year-old daughter. As we spoke the newscaster announced that the Pentagan had been hit. My strongest feelings were to be with my family. I lived 62 miles away from where I worked and could not leave anyway. I remember fear, shock and most of all horror. My mother works close to NY city and all the phone lines were busy. I could not contact her. My brother was geting his PhD at a school in Washinton D.C. Those lines were busy too. Imagine the families and friends who knew their loved one was in any of those buildings or planes and could not be with them, speak to them or even know if they were alive. Later that morning watching news footage on a collegue's television I couldn't stop thinking how much I had always taken my safety in this country for granted. I recalled watching things like this happen in the Middle East, Africa, etc. How ignorant I was. We made sure the students knew a little about the event before they went home for the day. We were concerned that the high schoolers on their buses would scare them. All the teachers read a written statement to their classes appropriate for elementary students. How ironic, the information was such horror to adults who didn't understand it and a country of parents, grandparents, guardians, teachers, etc. had to explain it to a nation of children that night. It is now 9/13 2002 and 1 year later I sitll feel as much, if not more sorrow. I still cannot even begin to imagine the sadness of families, friends, etc. who lost a loved one in the attacks. I stay home with my daughter now. Yes, 9/11 had a great impact on this decision. I'm not sure we can afford it but we are willing to try. I am grateful my daughter was only 1 year-old at the time and too young to know or fear any of it. It is a mission of mine to wait until she is older and explain it all. We must never forget. My sister phoned me at approximately 8:50am to tell me that a plane crashed into the WTC. She was extremely upset..she had just watched the live feed on Channel 4 from WTC showing the plane as it crashed into Tower 1. She insisted I leave my office immediately! At first, I couldn't believe this was happening...my co-workers and I tried to get an image on our computers, but our computers had gone down. Everyone started receiving phone calls from family & friends...telling us what was happening and to evacuate our buiding. My sister called again - screaming and begging me to leave -- another plane has just hit Tower 2 -- we were under attack! My coworkers and I did leave then and ran outside to look downtown - it was surreal - a mushroom cloud of black smoke covered the downtown sky. Hundreds of people were walking uptown -- everyone was walking uptown. I was concerned for my family, my friends, but we could not call them...phone service had gone out. We walked up to 63rd Street to get to my sisters apartment..all bridges & tunnels were closed. It was so strange..the streets were so quiet..everyone looked resolved...calm...probably in shock. We saw a crowd in front of someone's apartment window in the 50's -- a television had been placed there..we finally saw the horror...the building had just fallen down!!! I felt the way I did when I heard JFK had been shot...complete shock,horror. The beautiful blue sky was filled with smoke and ashes. We looked downtown from Madison Avenue and we saw what looked like Hiroshima. I realized then that people I knew that worked in the WTC may not have made it out. Three of them did not. The Today show was on and I heard Katie Curric say "something is happening." From that point on I was glued to the TV. Like many Americans I witnessed the second plane fly into the World Trade Center (WTC) Tower 2. Initially, I thought there had to have been an catastrophic break down of the New York Air Traffic Control System. My brain refused to process what my eyes had sent it. But my heart knew. I quickly dressed and drove to work. The Gold Star bridge was virtually empty of traffic and there were no planes in the sky. Upon arrival at work, I heard that the Pentagon had also been attacked. I felt unsafe living so close to the Groton Subase. All I could think of was an attack on our Nuclear submarines. I called my husband and attempted to reach my son, a student at the University of Connecticut. I layed my head on my desk and cried. Next thing you know all disaster teams were called to there place of contact. I was a member of the Medical control center (MCC). Captain Riley turned on the TV and we saw replays of a plane crashing into the world trade center. At first we were all just like, it was a simple accident. Then the building colapsed and the bulliten stated that it was a terrorist event. My heart jumped very hard. I didn't know what to say. All I could do was what I was supposed too. Tell us your story: I had spent September 10, 2001, helping my son Jonathan get ready to fly to Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX, to complete his F-16 crew chief training. His orders from the Colorado Air National Guard were unexpected, and we were scrambling to get the ranch he and I lived on ready for him to be gone for 6 months. After a hectic day of getting him packed and driven to Denver, he called back that night to let me know that he was there safe and sound. He related a strange incident that had happened to him that day at DIA. He had been ordered to fly in uniform, so he was surprised when a Marine LT came up to him and asked him what he was doing in uniform on a civilian flight. The Marine told him that he wasn't suppose to be in uniform because of the danger to him should something go wrong on a flight, such as a terrorist hijacking or something. He then told Jonathan how to hide his military ID so that it wouldn't be found should a search of passengers be initiated and gave him some other information along the same line. We laughed a little about it and I said, "Well, I hope you never need to know about that first hand!" The next morning, I was lying in bed watching the local 6:00 am news show when it was interrupted by the national NBC news show, announcing a calamity occurring at the World Trade Center. When the second plane crashed as I was watching, and the terrorist angle was being discussed, all I could think was, "And I just gave my only son to my country." My second thought was, "And neither he nor I would have it any other way." Today, as I watched the F-16s from Buckley fly over during Sterling, Colorado's beautiful memorial service, I felt a great pride in knowing that those planes were up there because my precious son, and others like him, had helped launch them into the air and would be responsible for making them safe to fly the next sortie--hopefully, just another training mission or memorial fly-over, but knowing that they would be ready to defend our nation at a moment's notice. Later that day, I went to my teaching job at a correctional institution. I worried what I would say if any of those "hardened criminals" said anything about my beloved country in a negative way. They were crying and consoling me and worrying about Jonathan because they knew that my son had just left for the Air Force the day before. My prayers continue to be with the survivors, the families of the fallen, and for our leaders as we continue to seek those who dare try to destroy this wonderful country. She asked me did I hear? I said "What?" Anyway, to cut a dialogue short, she informed me that there was plane crashes in the USA. I asked "Who was it? The Taliban?" Anyway, we were late and she left me hanging at guessing who it was as we rushed to class. During class, my mind was numb and I thought "oh, this could lead to a WW3". I couldn't concentrate and the air in the room felt heavy and thick. I tried to listen to fellow classmates assignments but my mind was numb. During teabreak, I rushed up to the library to check on the internet news what had happened. Sure enough, there was a picture of the Twin Towers being engulfed by flames on the front cover of the CNN internet site. I looked up who was behind the attacks and found that it was Bin Laden as the main suspect. I also read about the attacks on the Pentagon and a failed "assumed" attack on the Whitehouse. Later that evening.... when I got back home, every single channel on the television was constantly showing the attacks on the Twin Towers over and over and over......... MEDIA- I ask that next time there is a major attack or tradegy in America, that the media, please DO NOT constantly bombard us over and over and over with the same images. Think of what this is doing to the minds and hearts of the victims families, children, etc. It is only now, that after 6 months, after watching a documentary about the construction of the Twin Towers and knowing how many people died in the Twin Towers, that I feel some empathy and sympathy of sadness at the loss of so many lives. It's also sad to know that people are willing to destroy themselves because of religion, war, hatred and take so many innocent people with them. :( And that is my story of September 11, 2001. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was unemployed on September 11, 2002, so I planned to spend the day at home looking for job openings online. I am a member of the Southside Kiwanis Club of Corpus Christi. Our club sponsors a Key Club in the Flour Bluff High School in my community and I am a club liason, so I attended the weekly meeting of the Key Club at FBHS that morning. We talked about upcoming service projects and opportunities for Key Club involvement with our club projects. After the meeting, I returned home. It was about 8:40 a.m. CDT. For some reason, I had left the television set on, so when I walked into the living room, I immediately saw one of the twin towers smoking. I thought there must have been an accident. Then I realized that some kind of attack had taken place. My 26-year old daughter called from Denver. She was crying and wanted to know what was happening. She had a newborn daughter and it all seemed very frightening to her. My son, who is in the Army and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, at the time, phoned soon after. They had been awakened in the barracks and put on alert. He called me to see what information I had about the attacks. I watched the television reports for a while, then left to attend a meeting of another Kiwanis Club in the area. Following that meeting, I went to a local hospital (Doctors' Regional)to donate blood. I stood in line five and one half hours to do so. Of course, we did not know that the people in New York were mostly dead and there would not be thousands of wounded in need of our blood. But, we did not know what else to do or how else to help. I was still in line when the time came for me to attend class at the local community college, but I stayed in line. Luckily for me, a television news reporter was interviewing people in line to give blood, and my college instructor saw me being interviewed, so I was excused for my absence that evening! (Actually, class was cut short anyway that night because everyone wanted to be at home with their families.) I found a new job on October 1 - I took it as a favor to a friend, just to "help out" but it has turned out to be a wonderful place for me to be. This year, on September 10, 2002, I again attended the FBHS Key Club meeting. I talked about how last year, we all rushed out to try to help out - to try to make a difference in the lives of people we didn't even know. Well, Kiwanis and Key Club are dedicated to community service, so if anyone wants to do their part to make the world a safer, happier, place, then Key Club is a good start. This year, we have twice the number of students joining the club. I think the experiences of the past year have shown us all that we have something to give back and an obligation to give it. My immediate thought was, "I wonder what country this is?" I never for a moment thought that it could be here. I was watching all the kaos unfold, and I kept looking at the bottom of the screen to see where it was happening, but they never flashed anything. I finally called my father and asked him what was going on, where was this happening? He said, "here!" I was in shock, i couldn't believe it. At the time of 9/11, I was 9 months pregnant, and I remember looking down at my stomach and saying, "what kind of world is my baby coming into?" The thought of her being born into that kind of hatred and destruction scared me. I am not naive, I know there is hate in the world, but you never quite imagine it to be that destructive until it's in your own back yard. My prayers go out to all who lost their lives on that day, and to the families and friends who have the courage to live each day, with the knowlegde that they are a part of history. We got up ate breakfast and left out without ever turning on a TV or radio. We toured the Gulfarium and had a sparkling adventure with our 9 year old son, who had never seen live ocean animal shows. At the end of the tour, we exited the park into their souviner shop. As we were enjoying shopping around, we kept hearing over their radio system reporters talking in strained voices. My husband told me, "Lisa something bad has to have happened". I walked over to the check out counter and asked a clerk, "has something unusual happened to be covered so heavily on the radio station"? She looked at me as if I were from mars! She said, "lady don't you know the world trade center is gone! It's been hit by 2 planes! The pentagon has been hit too!" I felt my blood run cold in my veins. How could this have happened?!?! Our little family gathered our belongings and headed back to our beach condo in Gulf Shores. My husband and I were devistated. We held our son and viewed on TV the horrifing coverage. The ground vibrated from the explosion and I immediately walked outside to see Tower One in flames. All I could think of was the loss of life that just occurred. I felt sick and angry as I witnessed the second plane hit and the horrible fact that this was not an accident. I called my employees outside to witness this event and to remember for future generations. Many years ago I had the privilege to visit both towers before it was opened to the public and remembered its construction. My worst fear became reality when the collapses occurred. In the middle of morning appointments, a client came in and told us a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. I was saying, "Yeah right!", until he said to turn on a TV or radio. As we were listening, all I could of were my two boys in North East Middle School, North East, MD. When we finally realized we also had a TV and turned it on, the second plane was flying into the other tower. Disbelief turned to shock and great sorrow. I went home at lunch time and called my parents and my mother-in-law in Indiana just to let them know we were all right. My mother was so worried about us being closer to all the tragedy. That night I felt great pride in my country when I went out to buy an American Flag, and everyone was sold out. All I could find were some small ones on a clearance table, but I knew they would do just fine. As we have approached the year anniversary of the 9/11 tradedies, we as americans need to realize the price we pay for our Freedoms. Tell us your story: Its 1:00 AM Sept 11, 2003.I know its two years later, but I figured that this is as good a forum as any to share this tidbit of info. I was on the last PATH train from Jersey City into the WTC on Sept 11, 2001. I arrived in WTC between the planes. As we came out there was a burning smell. I was going up the big escalator that takes you to the lobby of the WTC, and noticed a man who was slowing everybody up. As I passed him I noticed that his leg seemed injured and his pants looked all torn up. When we got to the top, I saw a number of uniformed officers (looked like police men to me,)take him and escort him away. (i guess it was for medical attention). I assume that when the first plane hit it must have caused some electric fire or something down by the PATH and thats how this guy got injured. I'll never know I guess. When I came up I was told that I was to exit the building immediately. I did notice that the stores seemed empty. As I came outside (Right opposite Deutsh Bank (Spellcheck), I saw all sorts of stuff on the ground . like when you go near a house after a fire. there were envelopes , pictures, bills, statements, etc. I asked a building guard what happened and he told me " there is a fire on the top floor". I was wondering weather I should hang around and see whats going on, but decided to continue on to my office. . I passed the fruit stand where I occasionally buy produce, but it was unattended buy the midle eatern vendor who was usually there. If I am not mistaken, the stand was also about half a block away from where it usually was. I contiued on and was cutting under 2 Rector place (thats a corner building where you go from Greenwich to Rector, when I heard a big BOOM. (The second plane hitting the WTC). Everybody started running so I ran too. As I passed by Syms (clothing store) I made a stupid joke to someone else running next to me. At the time I still had no idea what had happened, although in hindsite, my joke was in extremely poor taste. About a block later on the corner of my office building, I turned around and saw what everone was looking at. The WTC burning. Someone said that a plane fl;ew into it, I didnt believe it, until they said that they saw it with their own eyes. What really bothers me is, that at first, when the guard told me there was a fire on the top, i didnt realize the tragic ramifications that would have , even a regular fire up there would be devastating and deadly. Later as I watched the fire spread from one window to another (Like watching lights go on in an apartment building from across the way) I realized that there are people dying there. I saw the first tower fall and then was busy helping out in my building (we couldnt go out as the clouds of debris and smoke made that impossible for some time.) so i just heard the second tower fall but didnt see it. Remember 9/11 and all the innocent people who died , because a few wacko Islamic extremists wanted to prove a point. Lets not make the same mistake again, and be more vigilant. The second plane crashed minutes later as I had left my desk to run an errand. When I returned, my co-workers informed me of the second plane. I proceed to telephone a relative in New York City and spoke with her home attendant. While talking with her on the telephone, she onformed me that a plane had just crashed into the Pentagon. I became very nervous and hung up the phone immediately. I proceeded to a room where TVs mointor the energy market. There were several colleagues watching the towers burn. I stood watching until the both towers fell. I could not watch anymore because at that moment I realize that many many lives had been lost and there was nothing that could be done. We thought it was some sick joke.... He told us to turn on the t.v. it didn't matter which channel. We turned it on just as they showed the 2nd tower falling. Tell us your story: My husband woke me up and told me to turn on the tv, I saw the WTC burning and the newscaster said that a plane had hit the WTC. Then as we were watching another plane came into view I looked at my husband and said "that is a passenger plane Suddenly they broke in and said that a plane had hit the Pentagon, I grabbed the phone and called my daughter who lives less than a mile from the Pentagon. I finally got through and asked her if they were ok she told me that she didnt know where her husband was then I heard a loud banging at her door-they were evacuating the building. I had to leave for work but as I stood there watching the tv I saw the first tower collapse. There were so many emotions going through me-fear,anger,sadness a loss that cannot be explained. I work at a small airport and when I got there things were crazy, we had planes all over the place, most were bigger than we usually handle. People were stranded with nowhere to go. My wonderful Mom owns the restaurant at the airport it is called MARYS PLANE VIEW she fed all of the stranded passengers and help to make sure everybody had a place to go.My daughter finally called and told me how terrible things were in D.C. She was very upset and worried so I asked her to come home for a few days since her husband was on duty at the Pentagon. I was in my office on Sept 11, when my secretary heard about a plane crashing into the WTC. We all stood around her little radio, transfixed not knowing what was about to happen. All of a sudden a second plane hit and then we knew that this was not an accident. Within that first hour, parents began streaming into the school office to pick up their children, parents who had spouses working in the WTC, relatives who came to get the kids whose parents were working in the WTC, and also parents who just wanted to have their children close to them. I began to run around the school, picking up the children for their parents. We had some children who were trying to reach their parent who was working in the WTC. They were panicked, and unable to reach anyone. It was frightening..... we knew history was in the making, we felt helpless. When school ended that day, I went down to the water and looking across the Hudson, and saw the huge hole in the skyline and the smoke pouring out of the hole. My heart was broken, and is still aching for what we suffered. We will never forget. And yes, three children in our school lost their father. My dad was pounding on my door to get up because I had forgotten to set my alarm the night before. So I woke up quickly got dressed and went to school. In previous days my school was in the headlines because qwe had the earliest lunch (9:30 am) in the country. We had had camaramen in our lunch all the time. I was one of the people with this lunch period. anyways it was during lunch that I had first heard about it. My friend Alex walked up to our table and told us that the Wtc had been hit by an airplane. My friends and I thought he was joking and proceeded to make jokes about it. At that point the bell rang and I went to my english class. We had a sub that day and I quickly turned on the tv just to make sure he was really joking. The first image I saw was a rerun of the second plane smashing into the tower. Needless to asy I joked no more. For the rest of the day we proceeded through the classes but no work was happening. My math test was canceled. In band we didn't do anything but watch the tv. I'm a trombone player in the high school marching band. That friday night we had a football game. All the way there and back we saw hundreds of people outside for the candlelight vigil. It was amazing! during halftime we played some patriotic music. During it I had the melody to God Bless America. For once the crowd didn't just talk over the band and go eat. They actually listened. I even saw some people crying! It's amazing how this united people in a way That I didn't think was possible. This event has truly changed my life. It revealed to me the good in people. All of the people rushing in to the towers knowing that they probly wouldn't leave. That is the true definition of a hero. Thank you for the oppurtunity to share this.
