Tell us your story: Submitted by: vicky lacy From: London, England It is mid September, 2001 and I have just returned from New York to London, having spent a week or so with my brother in Brooklyn. I?d had a strong compulsion to go and see for myself the utter destruction at Ground Zero - not for any sick, voyeuristic reasons, but because I wanted to experience and grieve with fellow Americans and feel part of it. Over here in England (where I have lived for the past 30 years) I had watched the atrocities live on TV, and having been born in New York, I felt a strong compulsion to get there as quickly as possible. So I booked the first flight I could get, much to the amazement of friends and family who thought I was ?taking a chance? by flying so soon after the hijacks. Anyway, my adventures in Manhattan were, to say the least, worth it to me if not to anyone else. My brother and sister-in-law and all of their friends who live in New York could not bring themselves to go down to Lower Manhattan which I fully understand. It is their territory and they know it so well, so the thought of seeing it as it is today is quite honestly too painful. I, on the other hand, am not very familiar with downtown Manhattan and so there was less nostalgia involved. It does not mean I was not affected, quite the contrary. It made an enormous impact on me and strengthened my feelings about the city I was born in. It also made me even more aware of the delicate line we all face between life and death. If a strong city like New York can be reduced to rubble, it makes it even more likely that other cities could experience the same fate. London is possibly the next sitting target for terrorism in whatever form it may come. For many years, I had suffered from panic attacks. My journey down to Ground Zero completely by myself was a major accomplishment for me - considering that not long ago I couldn't even sit through Mrs. Doubtfire in the cinema for more than 2 minutes, or wait in a supermarket queue. Here is the description of my journey down to Ground Zero (or "The Pit" as New Yorkers now call it) The day was hot and sticky - around 88 degrees, with a pure blue sky. I wandered down to Canal Street which was the furthest point which the general public were allowed to venture in Lower Manhattan. It is about 8 blocks from Ground Zero - far enough away for safety. For some reason, I have always had the knack of persuading people to let me do what I want and this was no exception. I befriended a "Cop" who escorted me through the metal barricade and endless groups of soldiers and police, saying I was "OK for entry". Why he let me through and no one else, I will never know, but I am grateful to him nonetheless. When I approached the first sight of the disaster site, my heart skipped a beat and for a second or two had warning signs of one of my panic attacks. But the horrific sight was so much more important than thoughts of my stupid panic attacks that I carried on regardless. With each step I took, the more visible was the carnage. Acrid smoke was still thick in the air even after 8 days, and occasionally when the wind shifted I got a whiff of decomposing flesh. I had borrowed a camera and found that it was broken so I went into a Photo shop to buy a disposable camera. The shop was directly across the street from the disaster site and the display window was broken and covered in dust. That did not stop them from opening their shop to the public (most of whom were press, public officials and local residents) I later found out that the owner of the shop had been killed by flying debris and his employees were trying to raise money for his family by selling what they could from the shop. Block after block I saw damaged buildings, covered in thick dust and broken windows. Once these buildings were shiny and majestic, reaching for the sky. Now they looked like abandoned warehouses in a diabolical slum area. One building which must have been about 70 stories high had an enormous chunk taken out of its side, like a giant had taken a bite out of it. Another building had about 10 of its top stories hanging down like Spanish Moss on a willow tree. Shops still had their merchandise laid out neatly ready to be bought by the public, only everything was covered in about 5 inches of white dust and would never be sold to a soul. It was eerie beyond belief. These shops were like ghost houses. The actual epicentre of where the World Trade Centre had been was so much larger than the TV and photographs could show. It was never-ending, block after block after block after block. The rubble was almost as high as an average sized building, and smoke was still escaping out of scattered pockets. Fire engines, cranes, police cars, red cross vans, heavy duty transport lorries, ambulances and army vehicles filled the streets. It truly had the look of a war zone. Tired and dusty rescuers consisting of firemen (first and foremost), police, and medics came and went constantly from the recovery site. Many were being interviewed by the press as they left the area to go home, having worked for up to 20 hours at a stretch. But in spite of their exhaustion and sadness, they had incredible spirits. In fact, I was surprised at the almost happy-go-lucky comradery of all these brave heroes. It is true that at times like this (and during the Blitz in London for example), that people get a certain strength from sticking together in the most horrific circumstances. It is almost as if each individual heart and soul of these people melts into one enormous heart and soul and they become as one. I definitely felt it myself. Within half a block of where the Trade Centre once stood is the oldest church in New York. There is a peaceful graveyard surrounding it with beautiful trees and singing birds. It is only one storey high with a steeple and it used to look totally out of place with its backdrop of modern skyscrapers. There is a space behind it where the Towers used to be which stares out at you like a sore thumb. Now the church somehow is not out of place. In fact, it looks like it was meant to be there all along - to remind us that there are more important things on earth for us to think about apart from war and destruction. I think everyone in the civilized world has shed a tear over the atrocities of September 11 and whether they have had personal experiences or not, their hearts have gone out to everyone who has. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Our train was scheduled to leave Hoboken at 9:00am and it pulled out on time. As the conductor came around to collect the tickets, he mentioned that the first tower was on fire. The train stopped moving just outside of the station and you could see Tower 1 as clear as day.Hoboken is just across the river. As I was looking at the burning building, I saw a plane come around in a semi circle and the next thing I knew, I saw a big ball of fire coming from the second tower. At that point, I knew we were under some kind of attack. I remember feeling very nervous because here we are, on a train that wasn't moving, no cellular service, and absolutely no way of knowing what was going on. After a while the train began moving and eventually I was able to get a signal on my phone. I called my mother and asked her to put the TV on and tell me what was going on. She reported that it was two domestic airplanes that had crashed into the buildings.I reported to the rest of the train. Since all traffic in to NY was suspended, the train continued on it's journey through NJ. When I reached my destination, I spent the rest of the day trying to contact my son and his father to make sure they were ok. I was unable to return home that night so I stayed at a local hotel, were I could see the burning buildings from my window. I lost 11 employees/colleagues on that day. I had stopped by my workplace to pick up some paperwork and one of the employees ran into the office to say an airplane had hit the World Trade Center. I thouht it was probably an accident so I went home and turned on te T.V. and what happened after that is, as they say, history. I was especially worried because my husband was in Texas on business and was supposed to come home on September 12, and my parents were on vacation, also in Texas. It was frightening for me because he wasn't here to help me deal with my fear and for awhile when they didn't kow exactly how many planes were still out there that were hijacked it was very scary. My husband did not come home until that Saturday September 15, and I was a nervous wreck and did't want him to fly but he said "Don't worry, I won't let anyone get away with this again!" He came home safely and I could finally breathe a sigh of relief. My ordeal was NOTHING compared to people who lost loved ones and I will never forget those people who died and made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. I am an Investment Officer and was monitoring the financial news for the day on my computer when the news came across on Reuters that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. That was all...just a sentence. I mentioned it to my colleagues and we thought it must have been a small plane that got off course. I continued to monitor the news and went to the major news web sites to try to get more information. It wasn't long before we realized something terrible was happening. Our concern grew with each report and update. As we became aware of the scope of the crash we realized that some of our First Union colleagues were located in the World Trade Center. Our operations center had moved there only a few months earlier. By this time the rumors were flying and no one was sure what was actually happening. There was a sense of quiet panic. I watched in horror as the buidings collasped and the pentagon burned. For weeks afterward there was a feeling of fear whenever a plane flew overhead. I remembered having dinner at the Top of the World restaurant and the awesome views of New York city and the harbor. The worst part of the attack was all the innocent people who lost their lives by merely showing up for work or getting on an airplane. We received an e-mail from our corporate office that morning saying all of the First Union employees had gotten out of the World Trade Center and were safe. However, this turned out not to be true. We lost 4 colleagues when the buildings collasped. We all lost our feelings of safety and security that day, but we gained a a greater awareness of what is important in our lives and what isn't. The morning of September 11, 2001 changed our nation, the world and our lives forever. I am proud to be an American and proud of the way our nation responded to this attack on our way of life. I hope everyone remembers 9/11 and learns from it and that we do not slip back into complacency and that we never again take our freedoms for granted. At 9:00 am I noticed several people crying, I assumed these people had just lost a loved one, little did I know we all had lost a loved one. I stopped at a family store where they was watching tv. They were crying too. I looked up and saw the most hiddious site. I attempted to retrieve my other two children from school. At this time I was sick and took myself to the doctor's office to have my unborn child checked due to the stress I was in. I was told 'OH , It will be another week'. My children and I went to visit several family members. I began to experience pains again. At 10:29 pm that evening I delivered a beautiful baby boy. I will look at this child and remember that although these terrible people took our families and friends we have the next generation to protect and teach the importance of freedom and love. For each live taken there was two lives born. With love and prayers to all remember to stand together. September 11, 2001 started as normal as any other day...I flipped on my TV at about 8:50, expecting the morning news on CNN. The first plane had just hit the first tower. I was stunned. I told everyone in the office to turn on their TVs, and we all watched together as the horror filled our tiny TV frames. We all watched together as the second plane hit. The tears streamed down our faces, our throats closed with anger, with fear, with utter disbelief. My shock overwhelmed me as I called my family, my friends to make sure they were okay...I just needed to hear their voices. My brother lives an hour from D.C., my parents and sisters 20 minutes from an army base in New York. I was hundreds of miles away, praying to God they would be okay. My second awakening came later that morning. My best friend lived in Boston - her brother - a friend of mine as well - worked in New York. I raced to my phone and called Renee. Her brother, Scott D. Bart, was in the first tower hit. She had heard nothing from him. As I listened to her crying as her world fell apart, mine fell apart with her. I had never heard pain like that before - I had never heard that kind of fear. She simply said, "He can't be alive." When the towers fell, so did my hope that Scott was alive. He died that day, along with so many other friends, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers. Renee is still grieving - one year later - on September 11, 2002. She is still angry and hurt and sad and fearful...as am I. As is America. God bless those that lost thier lives, God bless those that lost a loved one, God bless those that ran in when everyone else was running out of those buildings. God bless us all. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was in an 8th grader at Washington Irving Middle School. I was in my third period English class when the school administrator got on the loudspeaker and announced that the World Trade Center and the Pentagon had been hit by an airplane. I really didn't have a first reaction because before then I had never heard of the Twin Towers, so them being hit by an airplane didn't register as a horrible tragedy to me. However, when we I went to my 4th period we watched on the television the burning towers and then the Pentagon, and then I realized how bad the situation really was. I heard the word kamikaze being thrown around, and I thought that was a strech and people were just thinking the worst. At the time I had no idea of terrorism and I was under the impression it was all an accident. My 4th period teacher let us watch for a little bit but then tried to go on with class and the lesson like nothing happend. Everyone was getting picked up early from school and we thought there would be an early closing but that wasn't the case. It was unusual to me that when I got home my mom who works in Washington DC, was home before me. When I walked in my mom said that my mom, grandma, brother, aunts and uncles had all called to make sure everything was OK. Today my life has been affected by the attacks because everytime I want to go to a Redskins game I get patted down and my purse gets searched. Everytime I get on an airplane I have to be there about an hour an a half ahead of time because of all the check points. Everyone's life has been affected due to the Patriot Act because our privacy can be invaded by the government. Slowly our liberties are being taken away, but the government says it will fight terrorism so most don't argue the cause. Students are allowed to carry cell phones in school after September 11. No other attacks can compare to the devestation of September 11,2001. However, I would say that the attack on Pearl Harbor another day in infamy would be the closest. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I'm sure my story starts like everyone elses. I woke up and got ready for work. The day began like any other day. I had to be at work at 7am, so I had to leave my house by 6am. My family was still asleep, so I didn't turn on a radio or a TV. I dislike talk radio, so I listened to a cd in the car on my way to work. In the six years that I had worked at Disneyland, I had rarely been asked to show my ID to get into the employee parking lot. I was angry with the security guard at the gate when he made me dig for it without an explanation as to why. The employee parking lot is a couple of blocks away from the park and employees were shuttled into the park. I first heard that a plane was deliberatly crashed into one of the twin towers. I was no longer angry with the security guard, now I understood. I made it to my location in Disneyland park after passing through rigerous security checks. The checked ID's and made us open every single compartment of our bags (needless to say, I stopped bringing bags to work). At the time I arrived, the park was still schedualed to open on time, but most of us had our doubts as to wheather or not that would happen. We did not have a tv in our location, but we did have a radio. We performed our morning routine of preparing to open the shops in Tomorrowland while listening to what was happening on the east coast. It was between 7:30 and 8am that we were told that the park would not be opening for the day. We were told to have our employees stay and do what ever was needed to prepare for the next day. When everything was done, then we could send everyone home. We were also asked to send some of our employees to the main entrance to act as guest control, turning guests away and explaining the situation. I sent several people to do that and assigned tasks to the rest of my employees, expecting to be there a couple of hours before sending everyone home. About fifteen minutes later, we received a phone call. We needed to send everyone home right away. We were to drop everything, lock the doors to our locations and leave. I went to each of my locations and ensured there was no one in any of them and that they were all secured. The others on the management team made sure everyone was accounted for and told them what was going on. I remember waiting at the gate to the shuttle making sure that all of my employees left before leaving myself. I went home and watched the news in horror, until I couldn't stand to watch anymore. I found out that all of the theme parks had been closed because they were potential targets, that was why we were made to leave in a hurry. I cried that day for everyone that was injured or killed that day. I grieved for their families. I still do. The day stands out in my mind. I remember conversations that I had and feelings I felt. It is my greatest hope that this never happens again. Life went on. September 12th came and went and suddenly it is September 11, 2002. I marveled today that a year has passed. The wounds are still so fresh that it does not feel that the year has passed. Disneyland reopened on September 12, 2001. The atmosphere was subdued, but people still came to the park. For a lot of people it was a brief escape from the horrible events of the day before. Security tightened up and is still like that today. New policies were implemented. We were given more information than ever before on what to do in the event of a man made or natural disaster. The days continue to pass. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at home, watching a morning news show (Canada am) while nursing my 3 month old son. I thought the image I was seeing was that of a small plane, a cesna perhaps, which had gone into the building either by accident or because the pilot was committing suicide. I called my husband, who was as work, and listening to the description of events on the radio, and neither of us could believe it. As I was on the phone with him, I saw a second plane on my tv screen. Outside I saw my neighbor leaving to pick-up her kids for lunch, and it seemed strange to me that life was going on while so many people's worlds had ended. I thought of the children mostly, and how they were dropped off at daycare and would not be picked up by Mommy or Daddy. I cried many tears that day, and in the days, weeks and months that followed. I cried every time I hear Alan Jackson's song about September 11th. What kind of world have I brought my son into? What kind of people do these things? What is wrong with them? I have so many questions and I'm so hurt at all this hatred they have in their hearts, and this hatred they are teaching others. I felt complete rage when I saw images of people rejoicing in the streets. I can still see that one woman who seemed to be happier than the rest. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On Sept. 11, 2001 I was off work that day and at home with my two small children (ages 2 and 1 at that time). I was doing the normal morning routine of cleaning up from breakfast and starting some laundry. The kids were watching a video tape of Barney and the tape had ended. Brittany, my oldest, wanted to watch it again so I started to rewind the tape. As the tape was rewinding, the tv went back to the normal broadcast mode and the first image that I saw on the screen was that of the first tower with smoke coming out of a very large hole. I instantly turned up the volume and began hearing of a small plane that had crashed into the tower. Just hearing that a plane had crashed into the tower was shock enough, but then I saw the second plane live on tv hit the second tower. I called a friend of mine and asked if he was watching tv. He was going through the same morning routine with his girls and hadn't seen anything. After turning on his tv, we both just talked on the phone tring to make sense of what was going on. I actually had panic setting in and was starting to worry about what was happening to our country. After talking with my friend, I can remember sitting in front of the tv the whole day. I called the Dr.'s office where my wife was at waiting for an appointment and told her to come home. I just didn't want to be alone. The only other thing that sticks out in my mind about that day was later on in the afternoon I decided to go out for a drive to calm my nerves. As I approached a popular gas station in town, I noticed that there were cars backed up for blocks and I couldn't understand why. I saw police cars and uniformed officers out on the street directing traffic and I assumed that it was because of an accident. I then realized that it was due to the lines at the gas pumps because of the fear of gas prices going way up. That night my wife and I with our children fueled up our vehicles and went to the grocery store and bought about a months worth of groceries and water just to be prepared for the worst. Tell us your story: SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 About 45 minutes into the 8:00am flight from Boston to L.A., the plane begins making a significant turn to the left. I remember thinking for a split second that the wings banked like the arms of a child pretending to fly - it was that kind of motion, my body moving into the turn. My mind is on alert though - what is this about? Why would we be turning as if drastically off course? Very soon the pilot's voice comes over the speaker saying we are landing in Cleveland, quietly stating there had been an incident at the World Trade Center in New York, that the stop was purely precautionary. We land and remain on the runway awaiting word from the authorities about how to proceed. We wait two hours. The flight attendants seem nervous. We must remain in our seats with seat belts securely fastened until the pilot turns off the fasten seat belt sign. The twenty or so people on the flight talk with quiet, anxious concern. What was going on? The pilot comes on and says the Marshals would be boarding the plane shortly to explain everything. An American airline flight with a Los Angeles destination and 8:00am departure from Boston, had been hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center. Fifteen minutes later a United airline flight with the same destination and departure had also been hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center. These airlines had the same departure and destination as our Delta flight, two of the three that left Boston that morning, only now we were safe in Cleveland and they were incinerated along with thousands of other human beings - they and the terrorists. I've got to let George know I'm ok. Everyone is using their cell phones. I don't know the number of the hotel in Boston. My purse is on the airstrip along with everything else except my I.D. that I am instructed to carry with me. We learn there has been a bomb threat to our aircraft. They are bussing us to a FAA building on the tarmac so the FBI can question us each individually. I'm desperate to find a phone. Everyone is talking frantically and emotionally to their families, friends - anyone familiar they can speak to. I can't use the payphone, I can't use the FAA phone. I volunteer to go first so I can get back and find a phone that may be clear by then. Did I see anything odd at the airport or notice any suspicious behavior? I tell them about the cab driver of mid-eastern decent who picked me up at the hotel and was confused about the airport. He tried to drop me at the arrival level for Delta Airlines, then dropped me off at Delta Shuttle explaining they had no curbside check-in and the Shuttle was the only plane that serviced the States. Our eyes had met as he unloaded my luggage. Was it nervousness, sympathy, nothing? I remember the letters of his last name, his cab number. The counter person was surprised a cab driver wouldn't know the correct location and re-directed me across the huge parking garage to Terminal C where my Delta flight would depart. Along the way I asked directions to the curbside check-in, and a guy in the elevator helped me. He was flying on American. I checked my bags curbside and purchased a New England calendar. It was 7:14 am in Terminal C…. still time. It is now approximately 5 hours after we landed. A woman gets the number of the hotel for me and lends me her phone. George answers and I just say, " It's me, I'm ok." He is screaming and crying and my heart is just outside of myself feeling his pain. I tell him, "it's ok - it's ok - I'm here…." We're both crying, he in grief with the thought of my death, and I with so much sorrow for him. And everywhere around me people are feeling their own pain, an anxiety that morbidly pulsates in the air we are breathing. We begin to sense the magnitude of this brilliant gesture of hate. We arrive at the hotel via bus, and go to a banquet room where the airline reps tell us what is going on. Stunned silence. It's beginning to settle in. We have yet to hear any news over the radio, though, and have not seen a TV. It is now 5:00pm. Once in my room I immediately turn on CNN and call George, again. I call my sister. My Brother calls. I'm on my knees and crying and praying for everything and everyone. I thank God for my life. Friends begin to call. I have a deep weariness I can't shake. A sense of morbidity and mortality and sorrow hangs on my shoulders. I'm reminded of a description I once read of death: "That fragrant cup of dark light". Was that what it was like? I begin to understand that my life and our lives, will NEVER be the same again. I order three Martini's - straight up. Before leaving my hotel room that morning, I noticed the Bible that is always placed in the drawer, and opened it to see what wisdom it would impart (the significance of which only hit me later) - it fell open to Job 24. In this book there is reference as follows: 24:2 Some remove the landmarks;they violently take away flocks, and feed thereof. 24:12 Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out. 24:16 In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light. 24:17 For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death. The next day all airports are closed and several of us take a bus into town and walk around a mall for a couple hours. We try to shake the burden. I buy three pairs of shoes. We meet for drinks and dinner. The two younger ones order the weirdest food: garlic mashed potatoes, pasta (no sauce) and white fish, for one. Everything was white. The other gets a bowl of pink sauce with a couple shrimps sticking out. Everything was pink. We laugh and it feels good. . . so good! On Thursday, we go to the airport and try to get out. Everyone from our group is going different directions at this point. Some just go home. Some rent cars and drive to L.A. because they are afraid to fly. One company arranges a limo to drive its employees back to Boston. I get routed through Atlanta the following day. It's chaotic. We wait and watch. I have a growing sense of dread as my day to fly approaches. In retrospect: When the FBI came on board the plane on the runway one said, "there's two of them" and quickly eyed all the passengers. Once inside the FAA building they escorted a young man with dark, mid-eastern features immediately into an office for questioning. I would find out later from a Delta employee that this man was questioned extensively, that he was from a wealthy family in Saudi Arabia and was in the U.S. with a Saudi Visa. I remember his expression being absolutely blank - no life in his eyes, not a trace of fear or compassion on his face. I want to remember the people I met, from the lovely older couple who lived in Belair/Beverly Hills, to the hooker at the bar downstairs in the Clarion Hotel in Middle America, Middleburg Heights, Ohio. And all those in between: Katie, who lost six business associates on the United flight that crashed into the World Trade Center. Serene & Kathy who were going home to Singapore. Lisa who was on her way as a first year teacher to Japan. Cathy and Wendy who shared time, dinner, and their personal lives. Paul @ the bar who once lived in California, could relate to the band "Fresh Cream" and shared his gentle spirit. Terry, who started every sentence with "those poor people" and would start to cry. Harold from Delta, who saved me from making the return trip through Atlanta when he knew the detained Saudi from our original flight, would be travelling on that one, too. He had also heard there were threats of possible terrorism in that city, and actually personally pulled my luggage off that flight and booked me through Cincinnati to L.A. in First Class! This is what I think of most: How lucky I am! That life has been given to me and love is constantly being extended to me, not only from my family and friends, (ESPECIALLY from them), but from new friends, people who were strangers. I'm feeling that these people, from all walks of life, nationalities, ethnic backgrounds, etc., are like a blueprint for all people around the world. In our own ways, we all want to be loved, and hopefully to give love in return, to live in peace, to laugh. These words have been used in abundance, and may be intellectually and philosophically naïve, but isn't this truly the bottom-line - simply to LOVE? Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a high school math teacher and I was in class on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. My students were working on a lesson when my phone rang. It was my husband. He told me, "Turn on your TV. Some planes just flew into the World Trade Center." I really had no idea what was going on at this point. I just thought that there had been some kind of strange accident with some planes hitting skyscrapers, but when I turned on my television I started to hear differently. My students and I watched as the commentators explained that they were hearing the planes were deliberatly flown into the buildings. Aside from the television ther was complete silence in the room. We continued watching and we heard the news that a plane had also crashed into the Pentagon. I remember the news anchors were stunned. Some were saying things like, "What is going on here?" Everyone was in total shock. The WTC planes were absolutely shocking, but then to hear of the Pentagon being hit in addition was an even greater shock. The students continued to watch and begin to ask question: "Who would do that?", "What's so special about the World Trade Center?", "Why the Pentagon" and "What are they going to do to catch them?" We talked about the terrorist and the importance of the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon and what they represented to the world. Then we watched as President Bush came on from the school he was at and make his statement about finding the terrorist and "hunting them down like dogs". Most of my students liked that because we're from Texas and that seemed like a Texan statement! By now most of the teachers in the school had on their TV's watching the news channels. Even as the classes changed, my next class came in and it was all they could talk about. I knew this was all we were going to do for the rest of the day. My next class and I sat and listened to the commentators talk about the situation and we watched as they covered when the first building fell. I had students ask, "They didn't all have time to get out did they?" I just remember replying, "I don't know, I hope they did!" Then a little later when the second tower fell, we actually watched it live. Again there was a silence. I also hearing about the plane that went down in Pennsylvania and waiting to see if this was a realted incident or just a coincidence. All day long my TV stayed on, whether students were in my room or not. At the end of the day when it was time to leave school. I left and went to my husband's work. He is a youth pastor at a church nearby. I rememeber walking in and they had set up a TV in the foyer of the church and most of the staff was watching every so often for updates. I sat with some of the teenagers who come over after school and we watched and talked about the events of the day. Like most Americans the rest of the evening was filled with conversations at home with my husband and watching continuing news coverage all night long. I will never forget the events of September 11, 2001. I was very greatful that I could share this day with my students and other young people who I could help discuss the events of the day and how they felt about it. Although I might not remember all of the details of my day forever, I will never forget the looks and questions that came from my students. I know I, along with all Americans, will remember and share my recollections with others forever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: At about 8:45AM on 9/11 I sat down to migrate the morning QVC.com homepage live to the webfarm, as we always update it at 9am. A teammate of mine had tuned the TV in the Migration cubicle to the news covering the 1st tower, which shocked and dismayed me, but I thought it was just an accident. I remembered that a bomber had crashed into the Empire State during WWII and figured it was another such situation. As I checked the links on the homepage, dividing my attention between my job and the live news coverage, I saw the second plane strike and heard the shocked silence, then startled cries of the newscasters as the realization sunk in. I migrated the homepage, walked back to my team in a daze and told them a second plane had struck. Soon, there were a dozen people milling around the TV watching the coverage, blank expressions of incomprehension on their faces. I went back to my desk and started working. I had too much to do to consider the implications. People kept asking me if I thought they would collapse, and I said no, citing the bomber accident. A little while later, our EVP, R.R., came out of his office and said "the first tower just collapsed." I said "really?" and he said yes. I stood up so I could see him, and he has a look of deep pain in his eyes, something one hardly expects to see in an experienced exec that had been around the block more than a few times. I sat down and went back to work, eyes watering. People were still hovering around the TV monitor. About a half hour later, R.R. came out of his office again, and said "the second tower just fell," and the question "really?" sounded hollow and distant as I said it. About a half hour after that, QVC broadcast went off the air, and Doug Briggs sent everyone in the company home. My best friend John's birthday was that day, and I had planned to meet him for lunch anyway. We drove to a cafe and had a quiet lunch together, trying not to think too much about what was happening. We didn't want to sit in front of the TV any more than we had to. The weather was wonderful, and we talked a lot about how we were experiencing our own Pearl Harbor, and how our generation was finally finding out how it must have felt to our parents. We talked about the war that was sure to follow. The next day, I removed all the products and promotions from the homepage of Qvc.com and replaced them with a link to the American Red Cross and this message: "Today, we grieve with America. Our hearts go out to all those who have lost loved ones, or whose family members or friends have been injured in yesterday's tragedies in New York City, Washington D.C. and outside of Pittsburgh PA. We wish to express our gratitude to all those who have been helping...and continue to help in rescue efforts." I migrated the page, and a printout of it still handgs in my cubicle today. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The day before this horrible tragedy I was flying home from New Jersey. We had a hard time flying out and had contemplated staying over an extra night. We finally made it home and had returned to work on September 11th. As the bell rang, to change classes, we heard rumor that a plane had hit the Twin Towers building. I was beginning my planning period so I went to the Social Studies wing and we all piled into one classroom. I will never forget watching the television with our students. You could see horror and disbelief on their faces. Our principal would come over the intercome periodically and let everyone know what was happening. He also announced that any teacher who felt the need to turn on his/her T.V. could do so. We watched it all day long. When we got home, we had to explain to our four year old why these buildings were on fire. All we could say was that some bad men had crashed into the buildings and hurt a lot of people. We use to have struggles with our students standing for the pledge. We do not have as many problems with that anymore! I went back to sleep and woke up again at6:15 a.m. When my sister told me what had happend, I got mad at myself for ignoring her. I did not have school today so, I watched the news the entire day with out a break. I was justshocked. I still am. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: They say we'll never forget where we were on the morning of September 11, 2001. I was making the short drive to work from Oak Cliff when I first heard the news on a rock station...I thought, "My Lord, these shock jocks have no conscience left." I switched stations as I approached the Commerce Street bridge towards downtown Dallas. I heard the same news. As I crossed the bridge, I looked up at the panoramic view of downtown Dallas directly in front of me. There was not an aircraft in site...anywhere. Never in my 40+ years had I seen the empty skies above Dallas. My heart sank and then reality sank in as well. I will never forget the empty sky and will always remember that moment of dispair and wondering what would happen next. I hope peace will someday be the rule for all. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was trying to install a computer in a small office, when I heard the new come over a radio. I was shocked, stunned...then the second plane hit. I couldn't think straight. This was America ! By 5 P.M., I was totally confused...didn't know what had happened (speculation was terrorism). I had to get home to my teenagers...I knew that if I was shocked about this event, they needed me to help understand the events... I thanked God that my parents weren't alive to have witnessed this happening to our nation...My Dad was a WWII veteran (Navy), then a Pediatrician, and my Mom, a teacher. They loved their country, and taught all of us that our country's strength was in it's diversity...accepting all races, creeds, cultures, religions - that made us unique...and also a democracy... Days later, I found out 2 friends of mine had perished. On 9-11, we were damaged and bruised...but we also became more determined than ever to be "one Nation, under God, indivisable, with liberty and justice, for ALL. 9-11 victims, families and heroes will live on in my mind and heart forever.
