Tell us your story: It was difficult to write about this event until a friend in Minnesota sent me a holiday card, in which she wondered how she could explain this to her daughter when she could not understand it herself: In Response to Caroline Rose (Draft 3.5) I am not sure how you can explain it, not even to an eleven-year old at the top of her form. We have had months to think about it, ask, ?Where were you?? without the rest of the question, talk it through. I was about to leave my apartment to vote, then to work, five blocks east of the World Trade Center. The man on the radio said to turn on the television. I saw the second point of impact the way you did, and thought, ?I will vote, then find out if the trains are running, to go to work.? After I voted, in the Senior Center, I stopped by the television room there. A man said he had an appointment, at eleven o?clock, at the World Trade Center. A woman said the appointment might still be kept if it was on a lower floor. It was on the seventy-eighth floor. She responded that it might be cancelled. My neighbor exited the subway at Twenty-Third Street and Fifth Avenue. She looked up to see an enormous fire, then went to work. The trains stopped running; it took her more than two hours to walk home. When the bridges and tunnels were closed, there was an enormous rush to gather supplies. In the market, a little boy asked his mother why she was buying so much food, and what could she answer? They were running low. There was a television on at the bank. We stopped mid-transactions to watch the building fall. Over the next weeks, we were numb, we were small-town quiet, we spent a lot of time talking. I was running errands downtown and passed a site about which I had wondered. It was a cemetery, stuck mid-block; 200 years ago, it was in the country. A woman I had never met struck up a conversation. This often happens here. We enjoyed that the cemetery was established by a man named Preserved Fish. I found out more about her than necessary: what she pays for her apartment, that she has kids. This often happens, as well, but as we parted, she offered me a hug, and what could I do? I hugged her back. This was new. One of the candidates for public office had his headquarters on the street where I live. It is a neighborhood commercial street with an all-night diner, cleaners, Swatch shop, kosher Chinese restaurant, that Gray?s Papaya you have seen in many movies at the corner. He stuck an ironing board outside his storefront, plopped on it a small colour television, and placed in front of that rainbow-coloured folding chairs, right in the middle of the sidewalk. For the whole first week, people gathered, talking it through. The posters went up right away, all over the City, memorials to individuals were stuck in street tree pits, candles lined the sidewalks, rememberances from many places were everywhere. They filled Union Square, since its construction, a park where peace marches assembled, and still do. The posters were heart-wrenching, hand-made and copied quickly: one man was last seen wearing a purple polo and black jeans, one woman was the pastry chef at Windows on the World, several had tattoos of a rose or a cross or a dragon, many had children. A lot of detail was crammed onto letter-sized paper until we knew these people, whether we really did or not. They worked at the top, trading bonds, or at the bottom, in the elevator pits, and the names were from every country in the world. They were from every place in the United States; the pastry chef last worked in a restaurant in San Francisco, where my sister now works as the pastry chef. Over time, things stabilized. Everyone returned to work, but not everything returned to normal. That first day back, I came out of the subway and turned to look west down Fulton Street. There was a gap where buildings had been. At night, it was brilliantly-lit, so that the remains and the cranes were without shadow. The smell was incredible, unforgettable when we dared to think about what we were smelling, and it was heavy. The streets downtown got cleaned twice a day, and still do. In these months, we have absorbed it, somehow, until something small shocks us again: I pulled my money from that bank branch five times last month, twice to buy theatre tickets from the booth in Two. I knew that man in graduate school; he was from Australia. I cannot get to New Jersey by train from downtown. There is no FM National Public Radio. Sometimes, it is a bigger shock: A woman I know will not shop in stores where clerks are Arab. The clerk in the newsstand in the apartment house next door might be Arab. He was looking glum, so I struck up a conversation, as often happens here. He lost two friends who worked in the World Trade Center, and another was in the hospital, badly hurt. I felt with him. A man I know does not mind if his telephone is tapped. Racial profiling has resumed. I doubled my donation to the American Civil Liberties Union. How would I explain it to an eleven-year old? These people were jealous of people in the United States. Even living here, they did not understand life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness. They did not see that disparate cultures can agree to differ and that people across a vast land can function as one society and survive (even) themselves. A few years ago, in a hostel in Switzerland, I was asked why I like being a citizen of the United States. I liked it, in part, because anywhere in the world, I could say, ?The President of the United States is an idiot,? which he was, and I would not be arrested. What response could there be? I do not recall one. In part, I could not imagine my home being anywhere but the City of New York, the Capital of the World. You can ask an eleven-year old to keep her mind aware and her heart open, and to work so that anyone in the United States can always speak her mind anywhere. Tell us your story: My husband called me from Philadelphia to ask me to watch the news as he had heard a plane had gone into the World Trade Center, he wanted more details. I found the nearest television and there was already another person there and she had just seen the second plane hit the second tower. There were stories coming in fast and furious after that, the Pentagon being hit, a possible car bomb outside the capitol building, etc. My husband called to say that his plane was cancelled and that he was trying to find a rental car to get home. I did not expect to see him for a couple days. Imagine my surprise when he was home before midnight. I am so lucky to be able to say that he came home that day, I know how many thousands more people can't say that. I had a prenatal appointment that day at 3:00pm and I prepared to tape the baby's heartbeat as I had at each appointment before that. I can hear the change in my voice from happy expectation the previous months, to stressed and oh so very sad that month. I will never lose that tape. It is an audible record of my devastation that horrible day. I was so shocked and lost that day, the first time I cried was when our elected officials stood on the steps of the capitol and sang "God Bless America". I still get tears in my eyes when I think of the non-partisan show of support for this great country and the wonderful people that lost their lives, but not their footprints on our souls on September 11, 2001. On September eleventh of two thausand and one, the two World Trade Centers in New York and the Pentagan here in Virginia were attacked by terrorists. Although we lost two wonderful treasures in our history, the Pentagan remaines standing. What can't be replaced are all of the lives we lost from this incident and those who survived will have to live with the paine inside for the rest of their lives. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was eleven o'clock am, and I was sitting in English class. I was just a junior in highschool back then. Well, another teacher came in to our class screaming, "oh my God, we are going to die!". My teacher was confused and the whole class stopped talking. The other teacher explained that two airplanes had hit the two World Trade Centers and that foreign countries were bombing us. I was sitting next to a window and I just looked outside because I thought I could see the smoke but offcourse I couldn't because I was in Virginia. All of the classrooms had television sets and so, the whole school turned on their televisions and watched the news. Our whole class started crying as we saw the buildings collapse. It hurt me a lot because I had just visited New York and I went to the two World Trade Centers not too long before the incident had happened. I was also hurt because I thought of all the help that America gives to these foreign countries and yet, they turn around and kill thousands of inicint lives. I don't really know the purpose of this incident but I do know that God will punish whoever is responsible for this. I understand that security is geting tighter these days, and that is a good thing because we really can't afford any more incidents like this. In conclusion, incidents may occur like this one in other countries and people don't make a big deal about them because it's normal for other countries. Though, for the United States, incidents like this one arn't supposed to happen and that's why it was a big deal in two thausand and one and it will continue to be a big deal in the future. We were coming back from breakfast to get ready for his funeral on September 11th when his friend told us about the 1st plane hitting the World Trade Center. We are from Greenville, SC and just were staying a t a motel so ran to our room (we were in the parking lot) just in time to see the 2nd plane hit. Even though we were still numb from my brother's death, my mom, aunt, his friends and I could still not believe we were watching the news and not our own "War of the Worlds". This was real! Not some "made for TV movie", and it was happening on OUR soil. THIS could NOT be happening to US. We were use to hearing and seeing footage on the news of scenes like these from the Middle East, but from the United States, not since Pearl Harbor, and then, not to this extent. The people who lost their lives and loved ones in these tragic events will forever be remembered. It is a day that we must never allow to be forgotten. It would not only dishonor them, but also dishonor the men and women who serve our country past, present, and future, to protect us and the freedoms, we so often take for granted; the freedoms of which these terrorists are afraid. I was in an elevator when the first plane hit, which shook the elevator and shot it down to the lobby of the building from the 36th floor. We then heard about the second plane hitting and evacuated the building-where I walked all the way to 94th street where I lived at the time. When I got to homeroom the tv was on. All the kids told me what happened. At first, I thought all the kids weere just joking, but then after I watched the tv a little bit I finally understood what had happned. I remember talking about it on the bus with my friends. We were all telking about it. "How many people were dying?" "Where had they hit?". We hadn't found out until the end of school day. Everything that was happening was all new to us. Once I got home I did my homework and watched the news for the rest of the day. It was weird because all the other channels had subsripts running about what was happening. I learned about how many people had died or were dying. I remember watching all sorts of peolpe helping other people who were hurt or looking for people who were buried under the debris. I think my life has changed because of September 11, 2001. I still have a little bit of fear of flying. I have changed the way I think about Afghanistan and the people who come from there. I know it is wrong but I think at first I discriminated against Afghans and other people from the Middle East, but I have decided they are not all that bad. I also feel that I am very lucky that no one that I knew died in or because of September 11, 2001 I think that all the people in the World Trade Centers and the World Trade Centers themselves should be remembered. I think that all of the firefighters and policemen who died or who are still living that helped out during 9-11-01 should be rememberd.. Teh people aboard the airplane that crashed in Pennsylvania who over came the hijackers should be remembered. The people in the pentagon and any civilian who helped out at the scenes cleaning up debris and helping the injured should be rememered. I thought it was just a normal fire, nothing that would be devastaing, but I was wrong. As soon as I got to school during first period, we just sat in class and watched the news. As the towers collapsed, no one could believe what was happenening. After that, there was paranoia going around as to where the next plane or planes would crash. Tell us your story: I was home studying, in fact taking a nap, but jumped up with an odd urgent feeling around 2pm, standing on a toolbox and breaking it. Turned on CNN, there was the first tower burning. Phoned my parents to turn on their TV and began hours of watching, unable to work. When the towers fell I phoned my boss at his desk and told him that between 10,000 and 100,000 people must have been killed. I said that business would be scarce for a long time, and told him to send any urgent emails, in case the Internet got attacked by teams of hackers organised by the same terrorists. News websites were slow. A webcam near the WTC showed a street filled with nothing but grey dust. In my chat room, one of our group said her husband had been high up in a WTC tower. Tell us your story: Having been in the intelligence community for the past thirty-seven years, and being a senior contract military intelligence analyst, I was aware and relatively up to speed on terroristic threats and the level of preparedness of the County on 11 Sept. One of my students came into the classroom at the beginning of class relating how one of the administration had a radio on and a report had come in stating that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I assumed immediately that some idiot in a Cessna had made serious judgment errors and crashed into one of the Towers. Then screaming from a nearby office told me that something worse perhaps was going on. We received the report that a second plane, a full scale jet, had just crashed into the Towers. I immediately realized at that moment that a terror attack was underway. From that point, everything went downhill. I was contacted by my office in Washington and placed on the highest alert status. I spent the day attempting to comfort the parade of students who passed through the classroom. Several faculty at the school consulted with me as to what to do and say, how to treat this terrible attack in class. It was an unfortunate event which I wish we had been fortunate enough to have prevented. Paul J. I feel so sorry for all the families that have lost their loved ones. Things will never ever ever be the same! Relationships have been destroyed by such an evil force. I believe that, it will take forever to heal a broken heart. Something that is so devasting to comprehend makes you wonder why such terroristic acts of violence exist. Especially when you have known someone in your life for years, it has such an impact on your mind. A mother, a father, a daughter, a son, uncle, aunt, cousins, comprise not just immediate families but also extended families -- have special relationships that will last an entire lifetime. However, there are no words that can express my deepest sympathy for all the families out there that have lost a family member in this terrible tragedy. Trying to locate my cousin Angela was very hard for me to take because no one in my family knew where she was. She works for Columbia Records in New York City but lives in New Jersey. Later,by 4pm, my cousins from Quincy finally heard from her; she was safe. Thank God! I was absolutely devastated when I was told fellow co-workers from TJX were killed! Though I work at HomeGoods (owned by TJX, Inc.), it really it me hard because my fellow co-worker lost her father John Corcoran. There are people that I have worked with: in the Hingham 4th July committee, John Barbuto, his niece Christine lost her life. My friend Nicha Sabbag last told me that her father was missing...I haven't heard any news since. When I contributed to the 911 Fund where I work in a government building, I happened to meet a firefighter in the lobby who just returned from Ground Zero. All I could do was hug him....He was my hero! I wanted to express my deepest gratitude for all the hard work to save lives. It meant so much to me. I have been to New York City, Manhattan, back in 1992, on assignment for the Boston National Park Service. I remember visiting the Empire State Building, and also, The World Trade Center. I took lots of photos. I remember that there was a beautiful exhibit at the WTC and took some photos. I can never return now and visit the way it was. But things will NEVER EVER be the same. What we all had was special. But when something takes that away from the citizens of America, we all suffer though in different degrees, but we all suffer in one way or another. Things will never be the same, ever again! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Well this is a poem that I wrote about 9/11 called "Guardians". Once there were two guardians that once stood tall. They stood side by side and had never left each others side. They had watched us every day from above. Then One day, the guardians that once stood tall had fallen to the ground. We watched from below as they had fallen. One had fallen, and then the other followed. As we discovered that one could not live without the other. We ran. We cried. Others had decided to hide. But we all could not believe our eyes. We watched in disbelieve as we saw are guardians die. At that moment we had asked ourselves why? Who is to blame for this? No one had known. Ordinary man became heroes that day, saving those that our guardians protected. Yet some heroes did not make it that day. For they sacrificed their lives for other. Making them true heroes, making them angel or even guardians as those that had fallen that day. Those heroes had been buried together with our guardians that day will never be forgotten. For they had never truly died because they live in our hearts and live in our minds. For their acts of heroism can never be erased from history, Let alone the memory of those that they help to safety. We wait for that day when they will be together again, waiting to be guardians to a city of heroes that will be built again. I had been feeling sick for the entire day, and decided later in the day to call my mom and go home. She came and picked me up. The next morning, September 11, I woke up at 6:30. Still feeling sick, my mom called the school to tell them I would be staying at home. At 8:50 that morning, I was still asleep. My mom came in and woke me up, saying a plane had hit the WTC. I had expected it to be a small private plane or something. I went downstairs to watch, and was immediately shocked. Suddenly, another fireball shot out of the WTC, as the second plane hit. This image will forever be set in my memory. My mom immediately grabbed the phone, to call everyone she knew. Within a half-hour, they cut to a shot of the Pentagon, with smoke billowing up. For the rest of the day, wild rumors were heard everywhere-- a car bomb at the state department, vans of illegal immigrants with explosives being stopped, bomb threats to buildings all over America, a plane being guided to the ground by the RCAF in Canada. I had never been this scared in my entire life. They say that there is an event for every generation that changes their view of the world forever. For my parents, it was the assassinations of JFK, RFK, and MLK. For their parents, it was Pearl Harbor. For their parents, the Great Depression, and for their parents, World War 1. For my generation, it was said to be the fall of the Berlin Wall. Then the first WTC bombing, then the OKC bombing, then finally Columbine. After witnessing these events, it is obvious that this is the event that changes out world. I first heard of the attack was when a customer came into the store and told us. I was with my co-worker, Janet, and we thought someone had made a mistake. Another customer came in and told us the second tower had been hit. I was shocked. I was dying for information. I wished I had a T.V. I turned on the radio in the store, searching for news and explanations. Everything was so sketchy and confused. No one really seemed to know what had happened at first. Then it came the report of the Pentagon being hit. I felt like I was living through the begining, the very first moments of world war three. And all I could do was listen to the radio. Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes I worry more about the safety and security of my family and my country. I wonder how this could have happened and wonder if they are doing enough to prevent this from ever happening again. the security I've taken for granted in the United States has been shaken. I really have to wonder what kind of people are capable of such misdirection that they can feel justified in what they did. What do you think should be remembered about september 11th? The tremendous loss of life. The every day heroes. Those that marched into the face of death to help others. That we should never take our country and our freedoms and our blessings for granted. Did you fly a flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes! I've flown a flag ever since, and have one on my car. Yes and no. I've always had a flag and been proud of it, but now I don't save it for national holidays. I'm proud to fly it everyday and I've always said "God bless America." I was in Kingston Ny with my family getting over the shock of losing the most important person in my life.And then the phone rang and the world was swept from under my feet. " erika turn on the television", said my uncle. "DO YOU SEE WHATS HAPPENING? They crashed a plane into the world trade center!" I immediately turned on the t.v. and saw the world trade center on fire. And just as mind grasped what had just happened it happened again. Only this time right in front of my face. The second plane seemed to come out of no where and slam into the second tower. That was the final nail in the coffin formerly known as the world trade center. It seemed to me that the sky itself was falling. The pentagon was destroyed, the world trade centers gone, and a plane filled with heros fell from the sky saving the lives of the intended victims of the terroist the were aboard. What was happening to the country? WHAT would happen to me? What would happen to my brother who was is the army? All of these questions and not one person who could give me any answers. Why us? Why now? How could this happened? It is now a year later and some of those questions still remain. Has anything changed? Yeah some of it has. We wait longer to get on planes, and we are now prepared to shoot the planes down if we have to. But has the core of this problem changed? The morning of Sept. 11, 2001, I was sleeping in my unit at our terminal when I was awakened by a message on my computer. It was my daughter wanting to know where I was at. I was in the New York area a few days before and she wanted to make sure I was ok. I turned on my T.V. and saw what was happening. The second plane was just hitting the tower. I just sat there stunned,trying to comprehend what was happening. I didn't have to leave any time soon so,I just watched as it all unfolded. I sent my daughter a message that I was alright. My wife called me with the same questions. I assured her I was fine. One of my brothers,who is also a truck driver,called asking where I was and if I was ok. I just spent most of the day watching the news,wondering who,what and why,like most of the country was I suppose. I was on Long Island the night they turned on the search lights. As I went back to New Jersey around 20:30 hours,it was quite a sight to see them! I cannot imagine what was going through the minds of all the people. All I could do was pray for them. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am the department secretary. I arrived a few minutes early for work on the morning of September 11, 2001. Several of the firefighters were gathered around the TV located in the livingroom/diningroom. I was sitting at the dining table reading the morning newspaper when I heard one of the guys say "that looks like an airplane just struck the World Trade Center". I glanced up and thought they were watching a movie or something. I turned back to my paper. Then they turned the volume up on the TV and I looked up again and realized this is not a show, this is for real. We were all on our feet in front of the TV. It seemed like only a few minutes later a second plane hit and needless to say for the rest of the day except for running calls and they were even few that day we were all in front of the TV. It just seemed like the impossible had taken place. I think we were all filled with a flood of emotions. I called my husband at his work and they had not heard about it yet. I called my daughter at her work and they had not heard about it yet. Lucky me I work for a Fire Department and they stay abreast of the news. That evening my husband and I watched TV until we could not hold our eyes open anymore. For days and weeks to come that is all we watched on TV. We wept, we prayed, we went to vigilantes. We didn't know anyone personally that was involved in this tragic event, but we felt like we knew them and mourned the loss as if it were our very own. One year later, we are still mourning and holding commerative memorial services. I hope that someday we will put the event truly in the past and be able to move on knowing that we will strive to never let this happen on our homeland again. I have found my peace and comfort in God. I pray for all those who are bitter that they will find their peace, comfort and strength to go on in God Almighty. I listened to them as they Screamed a 2nd one hit, When I got to work I was kinda freaked out because all i could think of is that I work 3 miles from Daddy Bush's house. Knowing that many Arabs hate him I could just imagine Houston being a target as well. As a Single Mother of two teenage boys all I wanted to do was go home and get my boys. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: One year ago today, I was one month into an 11-month Masters of Accountancy program at the University of Georgia. I left at 8:30, as usual, for class that morning, stopping to take care of an errand before going on to class. Following my usual routine, I parked in the graduate student lot and crossed the street to the Baptist Student Union (BSU) on campus. This place was my second home while in college, and I went there every day to ?hang out? until my class started at 9:30. The only thing I remember as different that morning was that I had the car radio off and was enjoying some peace and quiet during the ride to campus. Today?s arrival on campus was different. My roommate, who had left 10 minutes after me and was parked at the BSU, came running up to me. ?A plane flew into one of the World Trade Center towers,? she shouted at me, surprised by what had happened. Thinking it was some accident or error, we headed into the building and turned on the TV. Along with two of the organization?s campus ministers who also arrived at about the same time, we watched the first tower burning and watched in horror as the second tower was hit right before our own eyes. I cannot tell you exactly how I felt at that moment, but I can say that I will never forget that moment. I?m still not sure what hit first ? anger, shock, sadness, fear, or maybe it was all of those. How could anyone willingly do this? I wondered. Who could intentionally seek to take any so many innocent lives? I also struggled with my questions to God ? why? I am a Christian and believe that a purpose lies in everything, but at that moment, I wasn?t sure I understood what it was. Despite our feelings, class and exams at 9:30 for both my roommate and me required us to go to class. I can look back now and say that was the hardest test I have even had to take, and I can?t even remember now what it covered. In the middle of my exam, the professor told us of the attack on the Pentagon and said that if anyone needed to leave, he or she was free to go?.might have been a better idea to let us go sooner, since it was difficult to concentrate. The rest of the day was pretty much a blur?calling family in Atlanta and up North to make sure everyone was okay, waiting in line to give blood only to find a one to two week wait, seeing the faces at BSU gathered around the television set, saddened and confused. My parents and others in their generation talk about remembering exactly where they were and what they were doing when President Kennedy was assassinated. It was understandably a painful memory, but I didn?t really understand until one year ago today. I remember so much of that day because our lives as Americans changed one year ago. I realize now that we are not exempt from terror, and it hurts to think that people suffer through this daily around the world. I will remember that day as long as I live and be grateful every day that I am alive and able to enjoy my freedoms as an American. I don?t know that I really appreciated what it means to live here until now, and my hope is that this memory will never let me forget. I was vacationing in Florida with my best friend Colleen when all hell broke loose. I can remember her coming into the room and saying to turn on the TV becasue the Twin Towers were hit by airplanes. I was in complete shock. I could not believe what I was seeing. Being from New Jersey I tried to call my Mom and could not get through for over 2 hours. When I finally did.... I just broke down and started to cry. I have never wanted to be home so badly. The rest of the day was a blur... but I know I could not break away from the TV. All I did was watch the coverage on the Towers, The Pentagon, and the crash in Pennsylvania. Colleen and I deceided to go out to dinner to Fridays that night becasue in Orlando that was about the only thing open... everything else was shut down. People who were out asked us if we were from around the area and we said No.. New Jersey.. they just looked at us and said... we are so sorry. That made us realize that we needed to get home. The next day we went back and forth with the idea of waiting for a plane or driving the rental car we had back to NJ, or just waiting it out and spend time in Florida while the airplanes were still grounded. We watched TV some more that day and then went for a drive. We were in a store picking up a newspaper and again someone asked us where we were from..... and again we got the same look of sadness and the same I am so sorry for the both of you. They must have seen it in our faces that we were heartbroken. We got back to the hotel and I called my parents. My father wanted me to be home with my family more than anything else.. becasue at this point noone knew what was going to happen next. My father told me that he was going to go to Ground Zero the next day and VOLUNTEER his time.... he has been a ironworker for Local #373 for over 25 years. He felt he neede to be doing something for all the missing people. Well when I heard that I knew I needed to get home. Colleen and I packed our bags...got in the car and left Florida at 8:00 the night of Sept 12. We never thought twice about our decision... we knew what we needed to do and where we needed to be. We drove staright through and arrived in Philadelphia at 12.00 the afternoon of the 13th. We dropped off the rental car in a deserted airport and drove home to Forked River, NJ. I could not sleep when I got home all I wanted to do was get a phone call from my father saying he was OK. That call came later that night.. words can not express how I felt or what my father seemed to be feeling. He was there for 3 dyas...... volunteering his time and working in the line amongst Jersey City Firefighters. He came home a different man....... he is usually so strong and you could always see the smile in his eyes. The firefighters, policemen, port authority cops, the people in the towers, the people in the pentagon, all of the rescue workers and emergency personnel, the heroes that stopped the terrorists on the plane.
