When the attacks on 9-11 occurred, I was asleep until my husband came home and woke me up to tell me what was happening. My husband is in the military and we live a military arsenal base. It is a very secured area. I was horrified when I saw the accounts on the news. I just couldn't believe what my eyes were telling me. Then the panic started to hit. I was so afraid that the arsenal would be hit next. There are a lot of military "stuff" out here. Things that could hurt a lot of people. My family had started to call us to see if we were alright. My Mother and Step-Father decided to come from Oklahoma to get us. We have a baby who was just 6 months old at the time and my family was petrified. So we packed some things in a haste and left the arsenal. Leaving the arsenal was a feat in itself. Every car and every person was searched. They put us on total "lock down". Well, we finally met my family at a site in between our two homes. I stayed with my family for 2 weeks. My husband stayed home because being military, he had to be on base in order to defend it if necessary. I pray every day that nothing like that ever happens to our country again. One thing for sure that stands out now is that our country has truely become "ONE UNITED NATION". I now live in Florida but I was born in New York and worked down town Manhattan until I moved here. I just cannot imagine not seeing those towers any longer. I used to walk from John & William St every day up to the Trade Center to get the train although I could take the train from my building. I did it even in snow. I loved those buildings and even today a year later try to picture the area without those buildings. The news media just do not do justice compared to seeing it in person. I had friends that worked there but they were safe. I cried most of the night because this happen on my birthday and all those people that lost their lives on that day. (my day) Today was a lot better than last year although I did have a crying spell in the morning while listening to people on the radio. I just want to take this time to say to all those families. My friend Anna didnt seem her herslef so I asked her what was wrong. She began to tell me about the planes crashing into the Twin towers . The monotony drones on, most of the time the date isn't even remembered until the first test requires it. It was my brother's 12th birthday, so I was already conscious of the day. After second hour, my friends and I went out to the hall to laugh and make small innuendos and laugh somemore, completely unaware of what was happening. I remember those last moments before the world changed. It was the last moment of innocence, the last time I ever thought it was going to be okay because this is America, bad shit doesn't happen here. Planes are hijacked from India, hostages get held in Iran, but in America the only terrosists I had ever had to fear up to that point wher homegrown disgruntled army boys. Too young to recall the World Trade Center bombing, I just remembered how we went into Iraq when I was in kindergarten, and "beat the bad man in the desert". We walked in to the room, expecting to engage in routine notetaking. Instead, we were greeted by the TV in the corner showing the World Trade Center on fire. My instantanous thought was that it had to be a movie. Within the same thought I knew it wasn't. some one told me two planes hit the Trade Center and one hit the pentagon and another hit the white house and there's one hijacked one flying around. Every bit of air was sucked out, and I felt overwhelmingly numb. One kid laughed and said "Too bad for all the stockbrokers!" Next to me my friend said, "This isn't funny! Do you know how many people work there? Lots of people are dying!" By now everyone was back from break, and with that comment the room fell silent. We sat in our seats or stood where we were and watched the TV. Facts were confirmed, others discounted. We saw the first tower fall and a shudder of disbelieve went through the room. I couldn't breathe anymore. It just crumbled. The second one too. We watched CBS because or teacher said Jennings would tell us if suspicions were confirmed or not. The next hour the halls were silent somber. Some kids were afraid they might hit Okemos, which everyone else laughed at. At that point, we all "knew" it was Bin Laden, but we didn't know. We thought there might be a war, that there would be a draft. That was the scariest, in a way. I was a sophomore but I knew senoirs and they were 18, old enough. If it lasted long enough, we would be old enough. We waited all day to know if anything else was going to happen. We didn't do anything in any of my classes except Statistics. We just talked and watched the same footage, the people jumping and the falling sending the same sick feeling through me each time. I never became numb to that. That night we went to Bill Knapp's for my brother's birthday and it was on in the corner. Everyone referred to it as "that thing" no one said 9-11 yet. We sang and ate cake but it was all somberly I felt bad for the kid. He's now like one of those. Everyone was talking about Pearl Harbor, but this was worse. Every one was talking about firemen and cops. Everyone was talking about war and Bush and Iraq and Bin Laden. But by the end of the I had heard one joke about it. Tell us your story: As I came out to my morning break a little after ten in the morning, I heard some people saying that the Pentagon had been bombed. I immediately went up and asked them about the claim that they were making. I could not believe that the Pentagon had been hit. In my mind something as fantastic as that could never have happened in my life time. The people that I talked too, though, was convinced that the Pentagon had been attacked. I wondered how the class I had been in when the attack had happened, did not hear about it, yet another class had. When I went back in to my next class both the teacher and students, in the class, were very solemn. I do not remember exactly but I am sure that many people were scared for there parents and other loved ones who worked in the Pentagon(this is because I live very near Washington DC). Later that day when I went over to my friend's house I found out about the Twin Towers falling. All I could do for at least thirty minutes is stare at the TV. After that, though, I got bored watching the same things over and over, and wanted to go do something else. Since the Pentagon was hit I was also afraid the building where my dad worked in DC would be hit. I was relieved when my dad came home safely. After the initial shock on September 11 I was not as emotional anymore, although every time I see images from it I get a little emotional. I have realized that America is not as safe anymore. I have also seen that it is more possible that I could be killed in some type of an attack than ever before. I feel more of a pride now though because I have lived through a terrible event in our country's history that I can convey to future generations. I have also had to deal with more security at airports. I also can not get a real good view of the fireworks in Washington DC on the Fourth of July because the lawn is restricted to only military personel. Although for the most part my life has not really changed because I did not know anyone killed in the attacks and daily life has gone on much as before. December 7, 1941 is very much like September 11. on both of these days America was caught off guard and thus suffured a lot. There were many causalties on both days and America entered conflicts as a result of both days. In both cases there was also intelligence that was not conveyed, thus cost this country a lot. The killing of the archduke of Austria that started World War I is also similar. This is because on both it and September 11 the acts were done by terriosts. Also in both cases the attacks were made because of wrongs the terriosts thought had been committed. In both cases the attacks were secretly planned and planned out really well. Also in both instances the terriosts were trying to accomplish their goals by making the attacks. I live in New Jersey now but 4 years ago nyc was my home town entire life. I remember the phone ringing and it was my husband.......Telling me to turn on the tv! i had just returned from dropping my 2 young 5/7 year old boys off at school!A plane has hit the wtc! get the#$@#&^* outta here!!So i turned the television on i was in shock everyone thought it was an accident. He told me he was watching it. He is a local 28 sheet metal worker;who worked in the wtc for monthes in the sub levels had he been there he would not be here today and that was only MAYBE 4-6 MONTHES BEFORE. HE WORKED THERE FOR MONTHES!!! That day I thought he was working in a building right there maybe a block away! Then another phone call and me watching news saw plane hit 2ND TOWER OH GOD!!! I will never forget seeing the news caster crying. Then I channel flipped and still more horrfic pictures. I called into work at the Navy base and they were telling people not to come in. I took my son out of bed, and awoke his dad. His dad and I were is tears. We just held our little boy crying, and knowing so many children were no longer going to have their Mommies, or Daddies loving arms around them again physically to love and potect them or to guide them throughout their lives ever again. We began to pray, and still to this day before anyone goes to bed or leaves to work or the sitters house for care, we pray for eachothers safety and protection. And we still pray for all the children for strength, courage, peace, and love. Our lives if you really look at them are short. Make every single day count with you family. We all belong to God, and when he comes to take us back home. Know in your heart you made every day count for you or that person. As we did this we saw one of the buildings on fire and then we saw the second plane hit. I watched in horror as we saw this unfold. I thought I was looking at an action film but it was actually happening. As soon as we saw this we went over to my moms house. It is the worst I had ever witnessed in my life. We watched the telvision all day long. I knew that after this everyones life was going to be different. Everthing that everyone knew was going to be changed forever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I whitnessed history on September 11th when I was in the Marlboro Middle School in Marlboro, Massachusetts. I had not heard a word about wht had happened until last period when I came back from band practice. It was about 2:20p.m. when I walked into the homeroom and was geting ready to leave, but something seemed strange. Students and teachers were whispering to each other while watching the television. The T.V. was on CNN new channel, and the broadcasters were talking about the hijacking of four airplanes. They were saying that an airplane hit the World Trade Centers. At that time , I didn't even know what the World Trade Centers were, or where they were located. I thought this might of been an accident that happened in another country. But at that moment, I heard the broadcasters say that an airplane had crashed into the Pentagon and in a field in Pennsylvania. I then realized that it wasn't an accident, and it happened in America. A guidance counselor walked in and told my homeroom teacher to turn the television off. When I got home I turned the telivision on to the news on CBS and realized what had happened. I was shocked when I heard and saw in detail what had happened. My life has changed because of September 11th, 2001, in many ways. Some negative things that I have learned is that a terrorist group called the Taliban led by Osama BinLadin caused this tragedy. It makes me angry when I think about how much time those terrorists spent thinking of a way to cause mass destruction. Some people have been scared to fly on airplanes since September 11th, 2001, because of terrorists. But this did not really bother me. I believe that many aspects of September 11th should be remembered. One main aspect is that thousands of innocent people lost their lives, and many firefighters lost their lives trying to save those people right before the buildings collapsed. Another thing that should be remembered is the amazing amount of patriotism that citizens in America had. Almost every house on my street had an American Flag, banner, or signs all over their house or property. Stores were out of any size of American Flags. I got up at 5:30am to make it out of the house by hopefully 6:30am to make my treck up Rt. 66 to Rt. 123 to Tyson?s Corner. Like I said it was an unusually smooth trip that morning, and an absolutely beautiful day so far. I got to work a 1/2-hour early and did my running around for a 1/2-hour before I got pinned down to my desk. I am the receptionist, "greeter", for any guests that come in and love my job. I have a beautiful view of the world outside my 8th floor window, over looking the Tyson?s Galleria; I can see the Washington Monument and parts of Maryland and DC. About 9am people are running up to my desk asking if I knew anything about the plane that hit the Trade Center tower or if I knew where a TV was. I logged on to the internet and went to CNN.com and saw the pictures and was in a little bit of shock, but wasn't too worried until one of my co-workers ran from one of the back offices and yelled "THEY JUST HIT THE PENTAGON!!" I started shaking. Then wondered where is my husband! I tried calling him and never got through, he is sub-contracted to the government. My boss finally got the news up in our VTC room and just about everyone in the company was in that little room, I got in there just in time to see the towers fall. I just started crying, hoping that none of my family that lives in NY was in the buildings. I got threw to my aunt that lives on Long Island and she said that she and my uncle were fine but couldn't get in touch with her girls, 1 in NY on the island w/her husband, 1 in NJ w/her husband, 1 in Mass, and one in Louisiana. Anyway, I found out later that I have an uncle that works at the Pentagon, and he was ok but a bit shaken up. No one left our company that day, even though we are part of one of the largest defense contractors in the world. I started hearing that FDNY lost a bunch of fire fighters in the towers. I started crying. I used to be a volunteer for a company in Fairfax County until I injured my back and couldn't do it anymore. But I know that I am still part of that "brotherhood" of fire fighters, even if I am a woman. I know that this is a bit jumbled, but this is how I am remembering the day. I finally heard from my husband, he was on at a coworker?s house and would be home shortly. He was telling me that about the time that the Pentagon got hit, he and a co-worker were headed up 66 to 495. They were listening to the news on the radio about the towers and all of the sudden traffic came to a complete halt and then said that he saw state troopers flying up the shoulder and then saw like 6 - 8 big black SUV's the size of a Suburban speeding by him. He and his friend were scared. Then he heard that the Pentagon got hit. I hadn't heard from my father and he works at Dulles Airport for the Airport Authority. I finally heard from him about 4:30 in the afternoon. The phones barely rang all day and I was glued to CNN.com and MSNBC.com for any more news and still shaking and keeping an eye on the skyline for a plane headed to the Washington Monument or worse toward Tyson?s Corner. I finally was able to leave work at 5:30, my normal time, now knowing that the day was not a typical workday and knowing that there will never be a typical workday again. I cried part of the way home and finally pulled into my drive way about 6:15, I got into the house and my husband held me as I sobbed and we watched the news for anymore information as to what was going on. I heard from everyone that I needed to that they were safe and sound and home. I will never forget how I felt and how scared I was at the time. To a point I am still scared, but knowing whom I believe in, I know that I will always be safe if I run to His love. For the days that followed, the guys that I work with, some of them ex-military, wanted to join the fight for our freedom. I know how they feel, if I could have continued with the FD I would have done anything to help. And to this day, I keep an eye on every plane that goes over my head or that I see. Thinking to myself, "is it going to happen again? Or what building could that one run into?" Prayers to all those who lost someone continue to pour from my heart and I will never forget the day that our world was shattered by someone else's selfishness and hatred. The cable guy was coming to hook up our digital cable. The cable guy arrived between the time that the second plane hit the north tower and the south tour collapsed and I wouldn't let him shut off the cable. Tell us your story: Blood Donor's September 11th Story ?Jean Zettler Blood Donor I confess I never even thought of going down to the Pentagon to volunteer - partly through fear, and partly because I don't have medical training and didn't have disaster response training. I did try to give blood however. But since the phones were so overwhelmed at both the Red Cross and Inova Blood Donor Services, I finally just got in the car and drove over. I'd been told when I was much younger that I could not donate blood for health reasons, but decided to see if things had changed - and they had. Since there was a long wait at the Inova Blood Donor Center in Annandale, I offered to volunteer, like many others. From 2 p.m. until about 1 a.m. the next day, I stacked drinks, got ice, passed out food and did anything else I could to feel I was "doing something". I wasn't the only one. I experienced the incredible outpouring of people's humanity and need to come together: people who waited for over six hours and into the early hours of the morning to donate blood, people who brought their whole families to wait, although children were not eligible to give blood. I experienced seeing the extreme disappointment on the faces of people who were turned away from donating; watching the dedication of the medical staff who got less than three hours sleep between Sept. 11 and Sept. 12. I was amazed and overjoyed at the generosity of individuals who brought juice and cookies to the center, as well as the plentiful contributions of local restaurants and businesses - including a towing service that packed the back of one of their trucks with ice, juices and soda and kept it outside the center all night, with the truck radio broadcasting the news to all the people outside on the grass who could not fit inside the center, but were still waiting to donate. If I hadn't volunteered that day, or the next, I would have missed seeing people come together like they did. I would have missed seeing the adults and children desperate to help out and do something while they were waiting and the young boy so thrilled when I asked him to pass out the pizza. I would have missed, on Sept. 12, the young Army private who came to give blood as soon as Fort Belvoir stood down and he could leave the base. And although the Blood Center initially said they had their limit for the day, they allowed the young man to come in. After all, who knew where he might be in a month, and he needed to think and feel he might be helping himself or someone else in the military who might need the blood. And I think it helped both those donating blood and the medical personnel to see "a man in uniform." If I hadn't volunteered those days, I would have missed heart-rendering scenes like the man who served in Vietnam who left the Blood Center in tears because they would not let him donate blood since he had hepatitis in Vietnam, yet he felt he wanted to do more for his country. I would have missed the American Airlines flight attendant who had been given the wrong directions on the evening of Sept. 11 for the site of a candle lighting vigil for American Airlines personnel to remember their colleagues who had perished earlier that day. The flight attendant was embarrassed to come into the waiting room of the Blood Center in her uniform, concerned that the sight of her might disturb those waiting to donate. And I would have missed meeting and talking to other volunteers, such as the State Department employee who was supposed to have headed back to his post the morning of the 11th, but since that was not possible, he came to give blood and stayed for two days, doing anything from directing traffic in the morning to turning people away at night. Yes, I cried a lot that day and in days to come. But some of my tears on Sept. 11 and 12 were tears of gratitude that people were as eager as I was to reach out and help the potential victims of the day's events. And in doing so, we helped each other slowly come to grip with the day's events. Since Sept. 11, I have taken the disaster preparedness training offered by the Red Cross and become more involved in crisis/emergency management issues and duties, as well as donating blood on a regular basis. How did Sept. 11 affect me? It made me realize how much I had to feel grateful for, and that there were things I needed to do, such as DAT training and giving blood, so that I wouldn't feel as helpless should something similar happen again. Of course, I've been donating blood on a regular basis (every 8-9 weeks) since 9/11/01. After taking a quiz in math, my friend Mahmoud, told me that the world trade towers were hit bit planes, and also that the pentagon was hit too. I didn't know what to think. Since I couldn't get back to sleep, I read through Stephen King's "Insomnia" (a book that, ironically, also featured a fanatic plunging a plane into a crowded place to stress his beliefs). I headed off to school at around 7:30 AM. I was in 2nd period Latin when they announced the horrible news over the speaker system. Before then, rumors about what had happened were circulating throughout the school; mind you, I hadn't heard any of them. The announcement was brief and full of fear. The secretary in the office told the entire school that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center (at first, I thought she was referring to the Boston World Trade Center, which is so dinky that it can barely be considered bomb-worthy). After the announcement, I remember turning to the person next to me and saying glibly- no joking- "I bet you that the person behind this has the initials OBL." I truly didn't realise how bad it was until someone brought in a TV and showed us the footage. The two towers were burning up. People were jumping from the wreckage to avoid being burned to death. And then, the towers came crashing down. I then knew the extent of what had happened, but I didn't really know how sickening it was. That sensation came during 5th period. They showed us more footage- including a video camera shot of the second plane careening right into the second tower. That was when I felt the bottom of my stomach drop out. I thought to myself, what kind of merciful God could allow this? Why was this happening? I made my way down to the front office, and made a call to my mom, asking her to pick me up as soon as possible after school. She did, and we drove home. I tried to escape from what was going on outside, but I couldn't. Every radio station was broadcasting live coverage of what had happened, along with every television network. I barely remember making it through the rest of the day. Then, I finally went to sleep, the reports from my radio talking on in the darkness. That morning we were going to Silver Dollar City, we had about an hour until they opened so we went to a little shop. When we went in a woman was saying a plane had hit the world trade center, at that moment I never thought it was an act of terrorism. Before we left she ahd said another plane hit, at that moment I knew something was really wrong. When we got in the van we turned the radio on and heard the whole story. At that moment even though we were hundreds of miles away from it, I no longer felt safe. The rest of the vacation we listened to the news on the radio and watched msnbc in the hotel room. Later when I was driving from Lamonte, MO to Kansas City, MO to go to work I passed Whiteman Air Force Base, there were a couple of times I saw the bombers leave. Every time I saw one I was terrified. Now even though a year has passed everytime I hear a song about that day or see footage I can help but get teary eyed. I don't understand how anyone can be so evil to do that, to so many innocent people. I turned on the news to see what was going on in the world. He first tower was already hit and as I watched in amazement I saw te plan hit the second tower. My heart litterally stopped. Tears burned my cheeks and my thought was let me see where my loved ones were. The phones were down and every few minutes could a call go through. After talking to myfriend and finding out he was okay I proceded to call my family. My heart stopped when my godmother informedme tha my cousin had a eeting at tower two tht morning. We tried her office and her cell and there was no answer. Iwent into panick mood. In the meantime friends were calling to find ot who needed to be contacted. Finally around 10am w reached my cousin. She said the meeting had been cancelled and her and her co-workers were fine. I had another friend simone who worked close by. My mind went immedately to her. Her father was tying to reach hr also. Not until 11pm id we get word that she was ok. She was caught in the dust and was treated at a nearby hospital but was then released. I did lose a friend patrick who worked on the 85th floor. His body was never rcovered. That day I held my three yearold son closer than ever. Life is so precious. We must lear to cherish every moment.
