I had woken up to the kiss buy my girlfriend telling me to have a good day at work. As I showered and got ready for work, I received a call from my father (in his Coral Gables home office). ?Frank are you watching the news? I told him no why what?s wrong?? He proceeded to tell me to turn on the news the world trade center had been hit by an airplane. I answered back what? What do you mean as I turn on the television I saw the smoke and flames coming from the sides of the north tower. I ran to the bedroom door and told my live in mother and father in to turn on the TV, that something is happening in New York! As a part of me was watching the news and the other part of me was getting dressed I started to turn my full attention to the TV screen. As I watched another aircraft from the upper right hand side of the screen come in it disappeared behind the south tower and then a large explosion came out the other side of the tower. My mouth fell and I screamed out ?Holly Mary Mother of God!? I ran out of the room and my mother in-law was weeping and my father in law watched. I sprinted to the phone and to call my girlfriend where she worked as a reservations agent for Delta Airlines. She picked up and I told her what was happening she could not believe what she was hearing I told her to find television and to turn it on. She said she would and I told her I would call her back. After hanging up with her I called work to find out and to pray to god it was not one of our own aircraft (I worked for Spirit Airlines). My supervisor told me that it was not but to stand buy she would call me back if she need me to come in earlier. After hanging up with her I turned my focus back to the TV they were talking of another aircraft that had just crashed in Washington DC and the Pentagon was on fire. And then at that moment I some how knew that we were being attacked by some one. At about 10am local time the south tower collapsed I watched as the building fell. My girlfriend called and was crying she could not believe it and nether could I. I told her try and make her way home that I had to head to work just then I turned my attention to the north tower and she collapsed also. I grabbed my things and head out the door. As I drove down the roads in Kendall everyone had the thousand-mile stair. I drove to me coworkers home and I picked him up. As we head to work. After getting to work we saw that everyone at work had the same expression on his or her faces. Their faces looked blank like the where staring into a face less painting with no expressions. That whole night was the slowest I ever worked. That night I did not sleep one wink, I tossed and turned about, as did my girlfriend. The following day I spoke to my mother and she told me that my cousin Gregory was missing (Gregory was a cousin that grew up with me in my youth and he had married and gotten a job working at the towers). I did not know the day before if Greg had made it out or not. My mother was extremely worried and she called to tell me how she was feeling. I told her I was not doing to well ether. Later that day I received another phone call but at work from my mother. Gregory was working on the 103rd floor of the north tower when the American Airlines flight crashed in to his floor and exploded. I was unable to work after that and my boss sent me home. For many months following 9/11 I thought of my cousin and about what he was doing when he died. I also replayed those aircraft slamming into the side of the building. I had many scary dreams and was unable to do work effectively. So after 8yrs of work in the aviation industry I decided to make a move out of it. The move was to put my mind at ease and to move on with my life. One year after that fateful day that the world stood still. My girlfriend and me took the whole week of to reflect and to be with our son. And to also look back and to look forward. I cannot see myself ever going back to the airlines ever again but I guess that will change over time, as do many things in life. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work on the morning of September 11, 2001. It was just a day like any other, until the news reports started coming in. I first learned of the unfolding events by word of mouth. A co-worker came by and calmly reported that a jet airliner had just crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City. It initially struck me as another one of those tragic airline misfortunes that have become so common over the last few years. I was completely in the dark about the real nature of this tragedy. A little later my wife called and said that another jet had crashed into the other tower of the World Trade Center. She told me that it was believed to be the work of terrorists. Suddenly, everything began to seem very surreal, and I wondered how this could be possible. A short time later another co-worker came by with the news that yet another jet had crashed into the Pentagon. I was stunned and wondered about the possibliity of even more crashes. Since I was working in a Federal Building for a Federal Agency, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, I began to feel a bit of unease about the possiblity that perhaps our building might also be targeted. But reason prevailed as I realized that our building was not clearly marked as the location of a major Agency. It also seemed highly unlikely that the plot that was unfolding could have been successful in multiple cities across the nation. Like everyone else, I settled in to listen and observe how things were unfolding in Washington and New York City. I don't think anyone really anticpated the horror that followed the aftermath of those crashed jets. When the twin towers of the World Trade Center came crashing down, it just compounded and extended the tragedy. Thinking about how many people might have lost their lives in these events was simply too mind boggling to comprehend. It was like the Oklahoma City bombing revisited, only 10 times worse. All that most Americans could do for the next several days was watch and pray. As for me, although horrified by those events, I felt far removed from them. Yet at the same time I felt drawn into the renewed sense of patriotism that was spawned by this direct attack on our homeland. There was a sense of pride and community that swept across the nation. It was a sense of solidarity with all Americans that probably has not been felt since World War II. If there was anything good that came out of September 11, 2001, it was this; Americans showed what has always been true about them. We are a nation of great diversity. We are so diverse, in fact, that it often seems that we are our own worse enemy. However, in times of great tragedy, Americans pull together with a sense of unity of purpose that has yet to be demonstrated by any other Nation. God Bless America. I remember everything that I wore to work, especially this really pretty new gray sweater. I remember thinking how nice it was outside, and how I planned to take a walk during my lunch hour. Around 9 a.m., one of the 4 guys that I shared a big office with, came rushing into the office telling me to "go to CNN" on my computer. I heard him say "they just hit the world trade center". I didn't understand what he meant, because he was rushing and looking frazzled. I knew he was serious a few seconds later, because I heard a lot of activity outside the door. Lots of people had began milling around, and some were walking really fast towards a corridor facing the Pentagon. There, I realized that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon also, because the sky was black. It was filled with black smoke, as the plane had just hit it. It all went down hill from that point on. I remember feeling very scared, exposed, vulnerable...and knowing with certainty that I was going to die. I was in shock, and wanted to cry right there at work. I remember standing listening to the radio when they announced that the towers had collapsed. I didn't realize that there were people in there. For some reason, I thought everyone had gotten out. Was I in for a terrible surprise. It took me 4 hours to get home...a ride which ususally would take 1/2 hour. My cell phone was barely working, and I was stuck in front of the FBI building (which was one block from my job) in traffic. I knew for certain that terrorist would try to hit the FBI buiding and I panicked even more. I kept thinking that I would never see my two cats or family or my beloved friend Reg again. I finally did make it home. A coworker and her husband gave me a ride..it took us almost an hour just to get out of the garage. Everything downtown was blocked off and traffic just went in circles. I had a hard time sleeping that night. I was in shock and kept crying, especially when they showed people jumping from the windows of the WTC. GOD bless them. It would be several months before I had a nightmare-less night. Everytime I closed my eyes, I would dream of helicopters or airplanes crashing into residential neighborhoods, hospitals or my bedroom. A year later, and I am still slightly on edge, but a lot better than I was before. Thank you for listening to me. I was reviewing vocabulary words - can still recall some of those words today - constellation, astronomy - when one of the custodians came flying into my classroom telling me to put on the television because a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. I was one of the few teachers in the building who had a TV that could receive TV signals and not just be used to play videos. I thought to myself, "Finally, someone will hook up all the wires and get this TV working," which I had been begging people to do the past week, but to no avail. Of course, I did not know how trivial that was at the time. We watched the events, as a class, on TV. I can still remember that a few students were not able to handle what was on TV, so they asked if they could go to room 310 to be with a different teacher. Even after the second plane hit, I was still trying to convince myself that it was all just a terrible accident. When the students went to lunch, I sat in my room alone and tried to eat my lunch - a roast beef sandwich. I took a few bites before I realized that I could not eat and wanted to be with everyone else in the cafeteria. Five years later, I am an 8th grade teacher in Fair Lawn, NJ. Today during lunch, I bit into my sandwich - and realized that I, once again, had roast beef. Tonight I stood in my backyard to view the "Tribute in Light," standing in the same place where I stood five years ago, as I watched how 'life as we knew it' had changed forever. While on maternity leave my employer restructured and changed my job responsibilities, now I would have to leave my 8 week daughter for 3 days every week if I wanted to keep my job. I had to have my job so I complied. September 11th was the first day leaving my 8 week old daughter overnight. I flew from Indianapolis to Detroit. Upon landing in Detroit I deboarded and was walking to my connecting gate when I noticed a very large cluster of people watching a television outside a pub, they were very quiet. Just as I looked up at the television screen the second plane hit the tower. Suddenly, someone shouted out, "that is not a private plane, that was a commercial airliner!" The airport terminal was then in complete chaos. Completely mortified I realized this was no accident and ran to get a rental car. Getting home to my family was the only thought on my mind at the time. I thought the U.S. was being attacked and didn't know how far it would reach. Luckily our corporate travel agent was able to get me a car. Upon arriving at the rental car site I was told every airport across the country had been closed and I was fortunate to have gotten the rental car because they now had none left. Due to the shortage of rental cars I decided to wait a few minutes to see if there were other people going to Indianapolis. There was one lady, but she refused to ride with a stranger, I asked nicely if she would prefer to drive and she declined. Another man asked if I could drive him to NY, but I didn't. The entire way back to Indianapolis I listened to the radio and prayed for all of the victims and all the citizens of the United States. The tragedy truly put my problems into perspective. Things that day slowed down as we listen and watch and then the third plane crashing in Washington and then the plan crash in PA - whata waste of lives - we found out later that the father of one of our staff people was on one of the flights that crashed into the towers, this was a shock. This was also my sisters 50th birthday. We had her party about a week later. The rest of the week was a hard one as we had to cope with what happen. She said I needed to get up and see what was on TV. When I saw the devastation and recognized the Pentagon, I was absolutely enraged. I still have/had friends working in the Pentagon. I has spent eight years of my military service, walking the halls and corridors that were now laid to waste. My anger boiled. My feelings of contempt were boundless. Anyone so ignorant to think that attempting to destroy the very symbol of American military power would even somewhat subdue our ability, much less our resolve, to extract vengence and justice must be mentally defective. We now know, that in some ways they were. They follow the teachings, and rantings, of a mad man. This has happened in the past. When the US was least expecting it, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. When we tried to isolate ourselves from the madness on the European continent, the Nazi Regieme (led by a mad man) lossed it's terror on the innocent and the peacefull nations around it. History has repeated itself, even though some say different, or calmly claim that the actions of those few were not of the magnitude of Pearl Harbor, not of the magnitude of the Holocost. Still, today, one full year later, I am horrified and angered by the pictures of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon. Not terrified, but horrified. How can we, as a freedom loving nation; a nation of helpers and aid givers, allow this to happen. We must be prepared for the eventuallity that this was only the prelude to what may be much, much worse. We must take our stand, extend a protective arm and hand to the rest of the freedom loving people of the world, and halt this encroachment on peace. Tell us your story: I was at home that day, and my daughter called from work to tell me to get the tv on that a plane had hit one of the world trade towers..MY husband was working right outside the kitchen door digging a hole to open a drain and i ran to tell him what had happened..I no more than got back to the living room when the 2nd plane hit..I again ran to my husband who immediately gave up his digging and came in to watch with me. He said as he came in, we are at war..My nephew had been sent to Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan to put in a computer syste, and i called my sister to see if she had heard from him, and she hadnt and we waited for hours before he could get through to call home. He was stuck where he was working as the tunnels were closed and had to get a hotel room for 3 days before he could get out of there. He said the devastation was unreal, and he could not wait to get home and just hug everybody..We followed the next plane crashing just below us in Somerset County..we like everyone else were glued to the tv for weeks, and still to this day cannot believe we let it happen, that we didnt know anything about it..The strongest nation in the world...it is still 1 year later very hard to believe. We had plans to fly just one month after that, October ll, to Virginia Beach to be with my oldest daughter on her birthday, and we went..We also had tickets to fly to las Vegas one month after that November 11, and we flew..Life does go on, but you surely did not feel safe, and wondered if we would get there..Our security was shaken, and remains the same today. Tell us your story: I was off from work that day and i was sleeping in (or so I thought) when my fiance woke me up and told me that something had hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and I almost didn't get up-it seemed so unbelievable and I thought I was still dreaming. But I did wake up in time to see the second plane hit and of course the collapse of the towers. I woke up my sister and told her what had happened and she told me to quit to making up crazy things-I explained to her that she knows me better than that and that I couldn't make up something as horrible as this, nor would I ever propose to do so. A few minutes later my mother called us crying and told us that she had shut down her office-nobody could function anyway. She asked us to go over to her house because she like the rest of the world needed to be with her family. We went to her and decided to go give blood. What else can you do? I wasn't allowed to give blood or plasma beause I had had hepatitis as a teenager so I volunteered to give out sign-up forms and keep the people in order. I couldn't help but want to contribute somehow. All of downtown Dallas was evacuated because, of course, we have a World Trade Center here as well. I couldn't help but think are we next? This town like all the nation was shut down and in mourning. Everyone was affected and it was absolutely the most solemn day in my life. Tell us your story: My name is Stephanie, and on that tragic day I was home alone, it was my day off and my children were at school and my husband was at work. When I was watching TV I couldn't beleive what I was seeing. It was the saddest moment of my life. But I also saw some wonderful miricales happen in the following minutes and hours, Americans pulling together to save lives,I saw a plane hit the twin towers, if it would have been minutes later hundreds more would have been in the building, I saw God's awesome hand hold up 2 buildings that should have fallen down on impact.I heard of a plane go down in a rural area of PA, a plane many now know was headed for a more populated area. I saw strangers helping out other strangers. I heard of many, countless hero's. These men and women, the hero's, helped our nation get back on it's feet. I saw more people coming to churches and praying, American Flags flying in almost ever home and on thousands of cars,in windows & office buildings etc. This is the one year anniversary of that cowardly attact, I still see stangers helping strangers, I still see hero's keeping America on it's feet. I see God's awesome power and grace helping us face one more day, one day at a time. Please remember all the fallen hero's in your prayers tonight, remember their families. Remember to pray for the stranger that helped you out today. We will not let the terrorist win, we are American's and so proud of it! May prayer is ... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: One Day of Terrorism, A Lifetime of Memories On a September 11, 2001, I woke up rather late. I had to rush to get to my first class at 9 am. The class went smoothly as I dosed off in there. Next, was psychology. I?m taking through notes and one of my friends comes in class late and says that a plane has just run into the World Trade Center. I laughed and said, ?shut up, you stupid.? She then proceeded to say, ?I?m serious!? By her facial expression, I could tell that she was serious. I was then in shock. I couldn?t believe it. I wondered why something always happens to the World Trade Center. When I got out of class I then found out that another plane hit the other building to the world trade center. This is when everyone figured out that it was an act of terrorism. By 12 o?clock everyone knew about what had happened. People were walking around campus sad, many crying, because many of them either had family or knew someone that worked there. Too many people died that day. Then the pain struck me. I realized that the debris from the wreck could have hit the people any where near the building. My uncle owns a business a block away from the trade center. I also have an aunt that travels about twice a week to New York. The hotel she stays in is about five blocks from the World Trade Center. And I have an Uncle that works in Washington. After worrying for about two hours I got the phone call that they were all ok. My uncle in NY was walking into his building when it happened, and had time to get away. My aunt was scheduled to go on her trip but postponed it. My uncle in Washington didn?t go to work that day. He was sick. My family was very thankful and blessed that day. It seemed just like a movie. Even though I wasn?t in there, I can only imagine what went on inside the World Trade Center. All I could think of was what those people were thinking: screaming, blood, sleep, screams and memories are all I could think about while a brick is approaching me. What do I do, but I can?t move. Stop holding me but no one is around. Help! Help! Help! Wait a minute why isn?t there anyone around to help me. Am I the only one who is seeing this? What is going on? Oh my gosh! I have to get out of here. I didn?t have much time to go on. Bricks begin to fall from all over and I knew it was time for me to get out. About several hundred people and myself were headed toward the exits but something happened. At the main entrance I witness about thirty people get crushed in a matter of seconds. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My dad & I were supposed to go to Ft. Monmouth in Eatontown, NJ that day & were running late. We grabbed breakfast & I started up the car. The radio was tuned to an all news station, WCBS 880 AM, in NYC. I was astounded to hear that a plane had hit the North Tower. I figured that it must?ve been a small plane like a Lear Jet or Piper because it was such a clear day & I thought no big commercial airplane would hit such a massive thing like the WTC. We went down Pine Av. & then onto rt. 35, which overlooks Raritan Bay. I then saw the huge pall of smoke & realized no small aircraft could do THAT kind of damage. Near the turnoff for the Garden State Parkway (GSP), there?s a small bayfront park in Old Bridge, NJ, so I turned into it. Normally at 9 am, there?d be 5-10 folks out jogging or walking their dogs. Today there were nearly 100 folks looking out at the Towers. Even at 25 miles distance, this was the biggest pall of smoke I?d ever seen, covering up 1/4 of the northeastern sky. We had to go back onto the highway to go to the fort. As we got onto the GSP, we heard that Tower 2 got hit. It was truly shocking at this point. Next, we heard that we were under a terrorist attack, then a few moments later, we heard the Pentagon got attacked. The bulletins came so fast & heavy, they were overlapping one another almost to the point of unintelligibility. Then we heard the announcer?s anguished cry that Tower 2 went crashing down to the ground. We got over to the fort & it looked like all hell broke loose. The Dept. of Defense police officer at the gate had blocked off the intersection & didn?t let traffic into the fort. Seeing a military license sticker on my dad?s car, he motioned us to come up. He asked us our business there & we asked him where our meeting was & he directed us to the base theater. I asked him what was going on & he said ?Buddy, we?re under attack!? That really scared me. I went to the theater, which, while open, was dark inside. I had to use the restrooms, so I opened the stall door & nearly jumped a foot when I saw what I perceived to be a dead body in the room, but thankfully, it was only a mannequin. I did my business there, turned to leave & then jumped nearly 2 feet when a fully armed MP came in & demanded to know what I was doing there. I stammered out that I was looking for an insurance meeting. He said to go to the base hospital. I asked him what in the world was going on, but he said w/a sad, weary look that my guess was as good as his. When we got to the hospital, 2 ladies were frantically waving traffic out of the parking lot. They said the meeting had moved to the base chapel & directed us there. I asked them if they knew what was going on, but they both had husbands in Tower 1 & they couldn?t get a hold of them & were really worried about them. Being a born again Christian, I said I?d pray for both of them. At this point, I told my dad I wanted to leave, as the Pentagon had just gotten hit & here we were on a military base 40 miles from the WTC, which also got hit. My dad, ever the trouper, said to drive on. We got over to an intersection & almost got T-boned by 5 MP cars & trucks. The MP?s jumped out of the vehicles almost before they had stopped & climbed onto a gate which led out onto rt. 35. My dad then said ?Let?s get outta here!? So we got back onto the GSP & went home. We had to go back by the bayfront park again & now there were hundreds of folks there. I stepped out of the car for a moment & saw the smoke plume rise up precipitously & then rapidly fall. I realized later I was seeing Tower 1 fall from 25 miles away. When I got back on the highway moments later, the radio announced that Tower 1 had indeed fallen. I got home, watched the tragedy on TV for awhile, then went back to the park. Now there were about 1,000 people there. Schools had let out & it seems the whole township of Old Bridge was there. The police & fire depts. set up a staging area there. Folks had their radios on, giving a running commentary on the tragedy. One station broadcasted the sounds of Tower 2 falling & that was chilling. Though lots of folks were chatting & there was lots of traffic around, one noise that was normally there was strangely absent. The park is directly across from JFK Airport & you normally see & hear 5-6 planes in the sky at any one time. Not today, though- the groundstop had silenced the skies. But a few minutes after noon, an F-16 streaked overhead. The crowd shuddered as one as they saw this. It made me feel as if our country was truly at war & under attack. I then walked over to the flagpole & said the Pledge of Allegiance & sang the Star Spangled Banner. I must?ve looked like a nut singing by myself, but I didn?t care. My country had been thrown in to a war not of its own choosing & I wanted folks to know that I was proud to be an American (& still am). The smoke had parted & you could see empty blue sky where the towers once had been. Some teens had come to view the event. One girl had a Big Apple t-shirt w/the Twin Towers prominently displayed on it. I told her to treasure that shirt as the Towers were gone. She said, ?No way!? I handed her a pair of binoculars I had brought & told her to take a look. After doing so for a bit, she said w/tears in her eyes that I was right. At 3 pm, I went to my friend Lorraine?s house nearby. She was having hot dogs & burgers w/her teenage son & so I joined her. Soon my sister Pauline & some other friends from my church (Calvary Chapel, Old Bridge, NJ) who had been dismissed early from work also came. These were single folks w/no family nearby, so they went over Lorraine?s to commiserate & pray together. At 4:30, I went to South Amboy?s bayfront park, but the view there was partially obscured by Staten Island, but the smoke was still flowing as ferociously as it had all day long. I found out my church was going to have an emergency prayer service that night, so I went. I was amazed to see about 500 folks show up. My church has 4,000 members & to see so many on a spur of the moment thing was encouraging. We sang & prayed & then my pastor, Lloyd Pulley, announced that out of the 100 of our members who worked in the WTC, not one of them made it into work that day!! That was amazing! But more amazing still was a story he told. He & his pastoral staff visited the Empire State Building the day before, along w/the guest speaker for the next evening?s service, a minister from Israel, who was going to speak on the evils of Islam & the true price of negotiating peace in Israel w/the Palestinians. They all looked over at the Twin Towers & noted that, while they looked strong & majestic, they were very vulnerable to an A-bomb attack. Little did my pastor know how prophetic his words were going to be. The Towers weren?t felled by a nuclear attack, but something just as fiery & powerful. Also, we had heard that one of our sister churches, 4 Winds Fellowship of Tinton Falls, had lost 10 of its members, including one of their elders, a man named Al Branca, who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald on the 104th floor. It was reported that he led 50 people in prayer to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord & Savior just as Tower 1 had crumbled. After the service I went back to the bayfront park for one last look & to invite anyone I talked to out to the next night?s service. Then, around midnight, I went home, watched more TV, prayed & crawled up to bed for a night of tortured sleep. Next day, I went back to the park in the late afternoon & the smoke was still frightfully heavy. I invited more folks out to my church & at 5:30 pm, I left for church. I was amazed to see more than 1,500 people turn out for the service. We had to seat them in the overflow room, teen center, nursery, hallways, parking lots & even out on the street. They heard a message of hope, the evils of Islam, the truth of what was going on in Israel at the time & about salvation in Jesus Christ. About 200 folks went up & professed new-found faith in Jesus, making Him their Lord & Savior. What a beautiful thing that was! Through the pain & utter sorrow of the event, there was new life beginning. What a joyous occasion this horrible time had become! These people had a real hope now in a time where it had seemed hope was lost. Only a loving, gracious God could do this! I slept a lot more peacefully this night, lost in ferverent prayer. Looking back over the past year, I have grown a lot, not just in my faith, but in personally standing up for righteousness, truth & peace. I?m more active politically & also more active in my church. I?ve had a pretty rough year physically, as has my family, but I believe that after living through 9/11, God had steeled me for the personal obstacles yet to come. Although not losing any family or friends in the attacks, I really know now how precious life is & that all our lives are in Jesus? holy, nail scarred hands. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was working in the computer room of the McAllen Sector Border Patrol Headquarters. I was there as part of a team on an information-gathering visit regarding a computer system that we install and support. We had flown to McAllen the day before from our home office in S. Burlington, Vermont. One of the women that were going off-shift came into the room where I was, saying, "A plane just hit the World Trade Center!? My first thought was that it was an accident, similar to the incident when a US Air Force bomber crashed into the Empire State Building. Although this sounded bad, it did not seem like more than an accident. We went into the Communications Center to watch CNN to find out what had happened. A short time later, we learned that another plane had struck the second tower of the Trade Center. The information that was available at the time was incomplete, and much of it could not be confirmed. I can't remember when terrorism was first mentioned, but we watched and listened to President Bush when he addressed the nation from Florida. A real feeling of dread came over me when the Pentagon was struck a few minutes later. At that point, it seemed as if there was no stopping the progression of terrible news. With the Pentagon as a target, my concern became more real and personal, as my younger brother occasionally works there. I had no way of knowing whether or not he was that that day. Another issue was the fact that my wife was on a short business trip that day, driving to Boston for a retail clothing show. I had no way to contact her, but called the store where she works and was speaking to the clerk when the first tower collapsed. This was more of a shock to me than the actual attacks, as I had seen some TV programs about the building itself, and knew it was engineered to withstand the impact of a large plane. It had done so, but I couldn't understand what had caused it to fall. Peg couldn't stay on the telephone, but I left a message with her to pass to my wife in the event that she called, to say that we were OK in our location, and that I would call her later. I also tried to call my mother in Baltimore to assure her, but was unable to get through. We attempted to continue with our work, as it was somewhat of a distraction, but there were several televisions on in the buildings we were in, and it was hard to miss the coverage. In a little while, the second tower fell, and my feelings of despair deepened. At some point, I realized that there would be retribution from the US, but no one could say where we would strike. I was not successful contacting my mother at her home in Baltimore, but finally reached my brother at his house. He had been sent home from Fort Meade, where his office is. We spoke for a while, and he told me that he would talk to our parents as soon as he could. As the site where we were working is a federal law enforcement agency building, they went to the highest level of alert. Vehicles were pulled up into the portico to block the building, and armed agents were posted at the entrances. At their feet were boxes of live ammunition in clips for their weapons. If we had not already made our entrance earlier in the day, we would have been turned away. As it was, we continued to work to the best of our ability, but I found it difficult to focus on the tasks, as my mind would wander to the thought of "what's next?.....? The word "war" was heard frequently, and I believed it would happen. When we went to our hotel that evening, the big screen TV was turned to either CNN of Fox News, with constant coverage. It was impossible to ignore, and we of course were concerned about getting home on Friday, which was our scheduled departure day. I spoke to my family; my wife and two kids. The concern was evident in their voices, I could tell they were worried. We discussed flying when it would be possible again, and the chance of driving home. It is 2300 mile drive; not one I would like to take. The three of us in Texas had decided that if one chose not to fly, we would drive together. Much thought and discussion went into the possibility or the need of driving. At some point, the constant coverage became too much of a distraction, so I did my best to avoid the TV in the hotel atrium. As it turned out flights became available on Friday, and I could be ticketed to Cleveland, with the hope that Burlington would open. When I got to the airport Friday morning, I spoke to my wife, and found out that Burlington airport was open, so I had hope of making it home. The initial flight from McAllen to Houston was only partially full. Upon landing, I saw a strange sight; dozens of airplanes, parked on the pavement, lined up in rows. George Bush Airport, Terminal C, normally a bustling place, was nearly deserted. Our second leg, from Houston to Cleveland was a little more than half-full and over half of the people on the plane were flight attendants and pilots. They were being moved to be able to fly other flights that had been delayed. In Cleveland, we were lucky enough to get a flight and make it into Burlington on time, with no problems. My family met me at the airport, something they had not done in a couple of years. It was a very emotional reunion; we were able to release some of the pent-up feelings that we had suppressed during the week. It had been rough on my wife and kids, with me away during this difficult time, and they had been worried about me. As we left the airport, there was a group of people holding a candle-light vigil, and there was a group of firefighters at the next intersection holding a vigil as well. These displays added to the emotion of the evening, We went out to dinner and had a nice time catching up with each other. I was glad to be home and they were glad to have me home! Tell us your story: On 9-11-2001 I was in Physiology class talking when a another teacher came in the class and told are teacher to turn on the t.v. that a plane had crash inside the world trade center. We all saw when the second plane hit the south world trade center. All of us could not believed that are nation was being attack by another nation without ever doing anything to them. The bell rang so we had to move to the next class and parents came to pck up there children because they were scare that one of the plane would carsh here. It not easy for me to forget about these because I saw how the planes would crash in different cities. I know that we have to try and forgive those people but I can't because I feel that they attack us for no reason and every time that I see somebody from that religion it remind me of 9/11/01 making me feel angry because of what they did to us. It going to be 5 years snice we were under attack and that pain is still with me. My heart goes out to all the people that lost a loveones on 9/11/01. The one thing that I'm proud of is that the people that where aborad on flight 93 fought against these terrorist till the end that they where not going to give up that easily. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My Nextel Phone went off and a good freind of mine said turn on the T.V. I was half asleep and aksed him why he said just do it. I turned on the T.V. the second I turned it on I saw the second hit the other tower. I remember my heart just went crazy I went from half asleep I ran downstairs and turned on the big screen yelling to my wife that we were at war. My grandfather used to tell me about Pearl Harbor and the stories were interesting but something seemed cold and distant about it, this was live and on every channel this was real. People were dying I couldn't even hardly speak, I just stood jaw agape and in shock as to the horror of this. I remember thinking of the power of hatred and how someone could do this to us what kind of hatred and lack of love for anything good and sacred a person would have to have to do this. I held my children extra close that day and since out of this horrible tragedy has been a great reminder that life is a gift, and that must be defended. I support our troops and pray for them to godspeed in ridding the world of hatemongers like the ones that did this to us. Tell us your story: I was sitting at my computer going over lesson plans, and my wife called me into the living room to watch the news about the first plane hitting the first tower. In disbelief, we sat there and watched the second plane hit the second tower, and later watched both towers crumble to the ground. As an American, I cried like a baby. It was as if something very valuable had been taken away from me ... my identity ... and I was vunerable and scared. And it was a horrible feeling to watch so many people in the two towers perish. And the continuation of the attacks with the Pentagon being hit and people dying and the fourth plane crashing in Pennsylvania with more innocent deaths made me angry. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was recently married on September 5,2001 and was leaving New York City for first time to live in Atlanta. It was very tough to leave but on the evening of September 10th we said goobye to my family in Long Island and drove to Manhattan to say goodbye to my husband's daughter. As we left New York we looked at the Skyline and I said I wonder when I will see that again.(not knowing how those words would haunt us forever) We drove all night and stopped in Virgina at 4:00am to rest in a hotel. As the world was experiencing one of the most tragic events of our history my husband and I slept. When we woke up around 11:00am my husband turned on the TV while I was in the shower and screamed "Oh my god, come out here and see this". We sat in horror and disbelief and just cried. We immediately became frantic not knowing about our families especially my brother who is a New York City Policemen. The telephone lines were down and we could not get through anyone. I immediately wanted to turn around and go back to New York. My husband wisely said there is no way that we will be able to get back in to the city. We sat feeling helpless and dumbfounded. It was hours before we could get through to our families but thank god everyone was fine. My brother however, was part of the search and recovery and rescue and will never be the same again. I almost lost a very good friend. She was in the first tower when the first plane hit but was smart enough not listen to being told to get back and stay. Thank god she ran out before the building collasped. I cannot imagine what it must have felt like to have been in New York and experience the horror first hand. I pray everyday for faith, strength and hope for all the victims and their families of the WTC, Pentagon and Flight 93. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Hello, I am Michelle Wink. I am a full-time Military Technician and I was at work on September 11th, 2001. The day started like any other, my husband and I got up for work, we got out 3 1/2 year old son ready for Daycare. I was at work and one of our helpdesk Technicians was fixing my computer when my phone rang; It was my husband. He asked me if I had seen the news? I said no. "You need to go get to a tv and turn it on, The WTC tower is on fire, they think a plane hit it." I sheepishly walked into my Supervisor's Office and said "Sir, Can we turn your TV on, my husband just called and said that a plane hit the World Trade Center" He looked at me weird but did as i had requested....and we sat there in his office in such dis-belief of what was happening, and i couldn't move from the chair. It seemed like forever but others in the office started crowding around the TV and when the 2nd Plane hit, i screamed and started crying.....OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!!!! i have never been so scared in my entire life....i had to walk out of the room....Then immediately we heard something hit the Pentagon......then it was true, another airplane.....and then Pennsylvania crash which we now know was an attempt on the White House diverted by Brave Heroic people. I was dumbfounded, and shocked to say the least at the tragic events. At the time I was also 3 1/2 months pregnant, I now have a beautiful baby girl along with my 4 year old Son, I thank God every day that I have them and that they are safe. God Bless America.
