              <text>I wrote these thoughts shortly after September 11, 2001 and have not read them since they were written. Now I know why. The pain has not gone away. The sorrow comes back in waves. The tears flow freely. I am hurting real badly now.

But I will NEVER FORGET and that is still a part of me now as it was then when I wrote the following recollection.

"I will never forget the day of 9-11-01. What are the unforgettable pieces of that day for me?

I will never forget how perfectly beautiful the day started out.

I will never forget the parking spot I took in Harrison.

I will never forget the walk to the Path train.

I will never forget the reason I missed four trains.

I will never forget the faces of my fellow passengers.

I will never forget the young man in the blue dress shirt talking to the young lady in red and the things they talked of.

I will never forget the five words to Steve that came from someone over the train Public Address system as our train sat at Exchange Place waiting to go into the World Trade Center.

I will never forget the communication I had with the woman on the other end of the emergency Path phone at the track level.

I will never forget the vision I had of my building One WTC burning as I rode up the escalator at Exchange Place.

I will never forget the absolute terror I felt when I got to the plate glass window at the top level and looked up just at the moment Two WTC was hit and the biggest fireball I had ever seen exploded up into the sky higher than the top of the building.

I will never forget the darkest fear I felt thinking of my daughter Lauren working at the World Financial Center right next to the WTC.

I will never forget going to the street and staring at the sight of the burning towers.

I will never forget the feeling of utter helplessness I was experiencing.

I will never forget walking quickly to get to my daughter Samantha and her husband Mike working in the Exchange Place area.

I will never forget the joyous relief that washed over me as I heard Sams voice calling out Mikes name at the bank of elevators just as I was walking up to them and hundreds of people were exiting the building.

I will never forget how absolutely wonderful it felt to hug them both.

I will never forget standing in the street and watching as each tower gave off such horrendous billows of darkly ominous smoke.

I will never forget thinking of my co-workers at Cantor Fitzgerald and eSpeed and praying as I watched my floor burning.

I will never forget the sight of one of my co-workers walking towards me with two cell phones to his ears trying to locate his father who worked near the WTC.

I will never forget how my joy at seeing him and thinking others must have gotten out also evaporated when he told me he was late getting into the office.

I will never forget my happiness at hearing my daughter Melissa and my son Ed who also work at Exchange Place were safe.

I will never forget the sight of so many people in the streets just standing and staring at the burning buildings.

I will never forget the walk away from the waterfront and the long lines at every pay phone in sight.

I will never forget my trip out of the Grove Street Path station back to Harrison as the packed train got out past Journal Square and I stood at a door watching both towers continue to give off such heavy black smoke.

I will never forget picking up slight background sounds of some passengers with early reports of another plane crash possibility.

I will never forget the drive home listening to the reports of horror on the radio.

I will never forget hearing the first report of one of the towers collapsing and the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach as I pulled into the driveway.

I will never forget walking through the front door and calling out my wife Carols name.

I will never forget our holding each other and not saying a word.

I will never forget the calls coming in to check on our families well being.

I will never forget the sheer relief in learning all of our kids and my brother John also working at Exchange Place were all safe.

I will never forget going to church to pray.

I will never forget my happiness at hearing my boss had called while I was gone.

I will never forget my gladness at hearing her voice and my sadness when she told me she had not been able to get in touch with many of our co-workers.

I will never forget how good it felt when she asked me to help her make survivor calls and how horrible it felt as I called into the night and only reached one co-worker.

I will never forget the first image I have of one of the earliest people holding up a photo on a TV screen of a missing loved one and it was one of my co-workers.

I will never forget or be able to accurately describe the feelings I had when each of our kids made it to the house and I was able to hug them again.

I will never forget the childish innocence of my granddaughter Emma?s question when she sadly asked Pop Pop why did the bad men knock down your building that I visited in July.

Finally I will never forget the overwhelming grief that came over me as 9-11-01 ended and the realization struck me that so had much of what we knew as normal lives."

I will NEVER FORGET!

            <elementText elementTextId="111997">
              <text>September 11, 2001 will be forever embedded in my memory as one of the most frightening days of my life. I am the receptionist for an over-the-counter pharmaceutical manufacturing company in Owings Mills, Baltimore, Maryland. I was sitting at my desk when a co-worker came by and told me that an airplane flew into one of the World Trade Center Towers in New York. A few minutes later, another co-worker told me that a second plane had flown into the second tower. At first, we thought it was an accident, but when we heard about the second plane, we knew something else was wrong.

We all scrambled to the conference rooms, turned on the televison, and to our utter amazement, there they were, blazing in flame and smoke. We were all too numb to speak, we just glared at the television in disbelief. There was talk about the Pentagon, and the plane crash in Pennsylvania. I had to leave the room, it was all too hard to take in. Upon my return, I was told that one of the buildings had collapsed. Is stood there in disbelief, and then, the second tower collapsed. It was more than I could handle. I began weeping, uncontrolably. I left the room and went to my desk. I put my head in my hands and I began to pray, asking God to be with all those people in and around the building.

The President of our company decided to close for the day so we could all be with our families. I remember the ride home, vividly. I live about an hour out of Washington, D.C., and the beltway signs were flashing that all roads to Washington, D.C. were closed until further notice. I knew that all air traffic had been cancelled, and Baltimore-Washington International Airport was only thirty minutes away. I remember how eerie it was not seeing any planes in the sky.

My next concern, as I traveled the highway, was having to drive trough the Fort McHenry Tunnel. (Not knowing how far the terrorists would take the events.) It still affects me to this day, each and every morning as I travel the same route, I ask God to protect us as we travel to and from work.

My children were already home from school, and when I arrived, I didn't even get out of the car. I just blew the horn and told them to lock the house up and come with me. I went to my friends house, called my husband at work, and had him meet us there. I wanted to be where I felt safe and protected, and I knew my friends home was the safest place to be.

The events of 9-11-2001 may have taken America by surprise, but God knew exactly what was going to happen. This is a wake-up call people! God doesn't make things like this happen, but He allows it to happen in order for us to seek His face and know just how powerful and mighty He is. God is our only true freedom. His grace is sufficient for each and every one of us, we must learn to trust Him in all of our day to day activities. Give Him the glory and honor He deserves, and see what a difference He will make in your life.

Because of His Grace, I remain...
Theresa H. Willinger

I lay here on my couch, trying to fall asleep the same way I do every night. Well not every night, just since July because the TV in my bedroom has been broken since then. Every night has been the same since then. I would fall asleep watching television, and Brian would wake me up before he went to work. I would go into my bedroom and fall back asleep, and later wake up for work. I don?t know why I didn?t get a new television, I have the money, I guess I am just a little too lazy sometimes. Every night it was the same routine. It kind of worked out well. I worked late-nights and Brian worked nine to five so we weren?t in each other?s way.

By the end of the summer I kind of thought that Brian was getting mad, or at least annoyed that he woke me up every morning. I actually liked it, because of our different hours we hardly saw each other. Brian was my big brother and by waking me up, I guess he felt like he was looking out for me. At times I think Brian was madder that I fell asleep with the TV on. Heaven forbid the electricity bill was more than last month.

One night about seven months ago, I fell asleep on the couch watching television. I remember this night so well, because it wasn?t unlike tonight at all. Brian woke me up before he went to work.

He shook me and said, ?Neal, how are you going to wake up for work.?

I said, ?Don?t worry I will go inside?.

I got up went inside and fell back to sleep. The next thing I remember is my cell phone ringing, I didn?t answer it, and I thought that if it were important they would call my house phone. Looking back I realized that this was totally against my normal routine. Normally when I got home from work at night I shut my ringer off because I would get calls from telemarketers all morning. Any one that needed me knew to call my cellular phone

A few minutes later my cell phone rang again; I still didn?t answer it. I was waiting for my house phone to ring before I thought anything of it. Sure enough my house phone rang next. It was my mother, and she was hysterical. She told me to turn on the news. When I put the news on, I saw that a plane had flown into the building that Brian worked in. Mom was telling me to call Brian and find out what was going on. Within the next few minutes, a plane had hit the other tower of the pair.

The next thought in my head was my brother Eric, he was supposed to be flying to Tampa that morning for business. I asked mom about Eric. She said that she couldn?t get in touch with him. Apparently the phone lines were all tied up because of what had happened. Mom couldn?t get a call through to Eric because he lives in New Jersey. When I finally I got Eric on the phone, he was just as bad as mom. His flight had been cancelled and he was home alone. Eric is the oldest of us, but he really doesn?t handle bad situations well.

I knew I had to get to Eric because he was alone. Mom was not alone, so she was ok. I was watching the news and when the first of the two towers collapsed, I ran out of the house. Traffic to New Jersey was horrible, I later found out that the Outerbridge Crossing was closed. Actually all of the bridges to Jersey were closed. While I was sitting in traffic, Eric called me. He told me that the tower had collapsed. Knowing that Tower Two collapsed and Brian was in Tower One I told him not to worry; Brian was in the other tower. Between his tears he was able to explain that now both towers had collapsed. In disbelief I told him not to worry everything would be ok. Sure enough Eric was right, both towers had fallen, but it had been almost two hours and I felt that Brian had enough time to get out.

At this point, I just didn?t want to be alone. Now my sister-in-law was home, so Eric wasn?t alone. I went to the only place I could get to, Mom?s house. When I got there, mom was alone and crying. All I could was hold her and try to comfort her. We were keeping hope alive, but part of us knew that there was no way Brian had escaped.

It had been about four hours now and still no word from Brian. Out of nowhere, my cell phone beeped with a voice message. I knew it was Brian, he was calling to tell us that he was ok. When I heard his voice I felt such a sigh of relief, but it came too soon.

This was the first call that my cell phone received that morning. In all of the confusion and with the phone lines being tied up, I had just got the message. It was Brain calling at 8:51 am. He called to tell us what had happened.

He said, ? A plane had hit the trade center and I am in it, everything is on fire. If I don?t make it out of here, tell everyone that I love them?, and then he said his last choked up goodbye.

After almost seven months, a memorial service, and a funeral, we still don?t want to admit that Brian is no longer with us. On that sunny September morning something stopped me from answering the phone. I don?t know what it was, but now the last words that Brian had for us will be with us forever.

Now even seven months later I still fall asleep on the couch with the television on, hoping that this was all a dream; waiting for Brian to shake my arm and tell me to go inside, because I don?t want to be late for work.

In loving Memory of
Brian Nunez

              <text>As soon as the first plane struck the World Trade Center, we turned the television on at the office in the bosses office. I and each of my co-workers watched and waited to see what would happen. There were so many reports of other planes being hijacked that, living in our military community, we feared that we would be attacked. The unbelievable happened.... both towers hit, the Pentagon hit and another plane that crashes in PA and saves countless lives, only for the passengers to lose their own. After it is was believed that the terror of the moment was over, we all cried and prayed for those that lost their lives at the hands of the terrorists. The mood was solemn and we decided that it would be best to close the office down at lunch and we would all go to lunch together. We needed to be together, united. That evening many of us went home to our families and our churches for comfort. It was so unbelievable that anyone could do such a thing. On Friday my co-workers and I attended a memorial/prayer service at the church around the corner from the office. We needed to be close to God and seek comfort from him and provide comfort to others in this tragedy.

It has now been a year but the memories of that day will never be forgotten. Now we face new terrors even while we continue to look for the people responsible for the tragedies of 9-11-01.

Every day I wear a pin representing patriotism or one of several I have collected of the Twin Towers which I wear on the 11th of every month. I proudly hang the official poster of the firefighters raising the flag at Ground Zero in my office. I will never forget, my family will never forget, our country will never forget.

God Bless America !!!!!

              <text> The summer of 2001 was very memorable to me. When it began, we lived in Dahlgren, Virginia. Dahlgren was a little Navy base on the shores of the Potomac River, home to 300 personell and their families. On June 15, my summer began. The eighth graders from Dahlgren School, all 14 of us (seriously), graduated. My best friend Aaron and I would spend our days riding around base, playing Mario on the original Nintendo, and go swimming in the creek with our friends.

  Somedays, we would sneak off base to grab a milkshake at Marathons. But around July, things started getting odd in Dahlgren. Security was beefed up for no apparent reason. You needed to have your ID everywhere you went. This was frustrating because I never was able to keep track of my ID card. My dad, however, welcomed the security. He felt it was at least something to do after the COLE disaster 9 months earlier. Being a Plankowner of the ill-fated destroyer, and friend to five of the victims (two killed) that day, he felt that not enough had been done following it.

  I remember one day, maybe July 15, 2001. Dad had been invited to his friends housewarming party in King George. Since my mom wasn't home, he decided to bring me too. He told me to get my ID but I told him I couldn't find it. Dad got upset, and I yelled out "Why do I have to carry my ID around! It's not like we're going to have a terrorist attack this summer or anything!" I will remember those words till the day I die.

  In August, Aaron and I went to summer camp with the Boy Scouts. While there, a few of us started talking about Pearl Harbor and what it would be like if another one happened. During the night, I had a nightmare that my family was driving around in Washington D.C. A plane veered out of nowhere and slammed into the Washington Monument, before the remnants crashed into the Capitol. People were screaming and bleeding. I woke up to find our tent in the middle of the night, everybody else sleeping soundly.

  On August 17, I turned 14. Two weeks later, we moved to Virginia Beach. I started high school at Princess Anne High School on September 4, 2001.

  On September 11, 2001, I walked to school, and forgot my lunch. I was called down to the office out of English class at 8:34 a.m., and came back with my lunch at 8:39 a.m.
  At 8:54 a.m., the bell rang. 5 minutes earlier, American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. My next class was Earth Science. Ten minutes into Earth Science, my oceanography teacher this year (2003-2004), Mr. Weis, walked in to tell my science teacher what happened. He whispered very softly. "A plane has hit the World Trade Center." I thought it was all a hoax. Mr. Weis has been known to pull practical jokes. Mr. Rose turned on the television, and there it was! "Manhattan's on fire!" I thought, seeing the towers on fire. The class looked on in horror as the scene unfolded before us via CNN. Reports came in before they were confirmed. "Helicopter crashes into Pentigon", "Several other planes reported hijacked", the list went on. Then, at 9:30, the south tower collapsed. The class screamed as the flaming chimney turned into a column of smoke. Our principal, Mrs. Griffin, came on the intercom to comfort the students. I forget her exact words. A high school came on the screen, and there were reports that a bomb was inside. Then the bell rang. During history class, we were studying religions. Using a world map, we had to point out where the major religions were concentrated. In fury I marked out Afghanistan and Iran.

  School was let out at 2:12 that day. I ran home to find my parents watching the television. Dad and I went to his high school friend's house that night. She was watching CNN also. Reports were coming in about missile strikes in Kabul, Afghanistan.

  A year later, I attended a special flag raising ceremony in honor of those who were killed that terrible day. Every night I pray that another September 11 will never happen again.</text>

              <text>It was just another day as a Junior at Alvin High School. I was walking with my best friend Shandi to my Geometry class, her class just just down the hall. I walked in hoping to have a few extra minutes to study for the quiz that Mrs. Hawkins said we were going to have that day. The bell rang and everyone took their seats. Almost instantly another toacher came in and asked to speak to my teacher in the hall. About ten minutes later she came back in and turned on the tv. The reception was rally bad and you couldnt really hear anything. After a few minutes of trying to make it work she gave up. Then a few teachers from the neighboring classrooms gathered in the hall and began to talk. None of the students knew what was going on and the teachers sometimes talked for a few minutes before class started so no one really thought anything of it. I remember thinking that it was weird that class was almost over and we hadnt done anything. My teacher never said anything to us about what had happend ad neither did the others. When I got into the hall Shandi came out and said that her mom had called her cell phone and it rang in the middle of class. Knowing that her mother would never call her at school unless something was wrong, she asked me to go to the bathroom with her so she could call her back. When she came out of the stall she told me that her mother was watching the news and that planes had hit the world trade centers. Frightened and shocked we hurried to our next class. By the time we got there the story had made it's way around. The teacher of my next class told us what all had happend. After everyone had had the chance to get to their classes the princepal came over the loud speaker and said what had happend. We still had two class periods to go to after the class we had just arrived in, but the princepal ordered us to stay in our third period class until further notice. We were not aloud to leave. We stayed in 3rd period for the rest of the day. Teachers and parents were frightened because Houston is so big and we are so close to the city, everyone thought Houston could be a target. They wouldnt even let us go outside. Parents began to arrive to take their kids home. I called my mom at work and she said that she was going to call the school and tell them that I had permission to drive home but I asked her not to. I didn't want to sit at home by mayself watching the nation under attack. At the moment I felt safer among my peers and teachers. The next few days teachers left their tv's on, listening for updates. They still did not like us going outside. I can't even begin to imagine what those poor people when through on this tragic day in history. My thoughts and prayers will forever be with the families of the victoms </text>

              <text>It was about 11:00pm here in Australia and I was in bed just laying there when my grandfather came in and said there had been an accident on a one of the trade centres. As i was walking out of my bedroom i seen the second plane hit the other tower..I was 10 at the time and wasn't really sure what was going on until my grandfather explained what a terrorist attack was and wat was going on. I sat there while my grandparents went next door and got my mum up out of bed and she came in. We sat there and you could see the first trade centre starting to wobble and then we knew that it would collapse. We then seen fire fighters hugging each other. After a while we seen the first tower collapse and we all stated crying. I cant really remember much more but i do remember the second tower collapsing. We finally turned the tv off at about 3 in the morning. I then had the next day off because i only got a couple of hours sleep but i was up at about 7:30am watching it. When my brother woke up at about 6 he turned the tv on to watch 'cheeze tv' ( a cartoon show) but it obviously wasn't on because of what happend. I will never foget that day as long as I live.</text>

              <text>We were in Speech class doing our vocabulary words for our next chapter when a teacher from down the hall rushed in and told us about the first attack. We were all saddened of course, thinking it was a freak accident. When the teacher came back and told us the 2nd tower was hit and that it was terrorism we were shocked even more. Our speech teacher told us to have a class discussion about the suspects and causes while she had "something to do." Some made jokes not knowing the seriousness of the situation, remember we haven't seen the video yet. One said Bill Clinton did it. There were many rumors flying around. I had heard that the Sears Tower in Chicago was leveled. It seemed to us that whoever did this was going after all of the big cities. Then when we heard of the crash in Pennsylvania we started to fear for our lives. We live 100 miles north of New Orleans.. what if New Orleans was a target?? Then in second period the principal came on the speakerphone and said that coverage of the attacks could be found on their tv's in the room. Well I had Chemistry 2nd period and we didnt have a tv in the lab. We went into a nearby classroom. We saw the attacks and it was deathly quiet in the room. I was sitting near the foriegn exchange students and they were really hit hard. Just think.. they were so exited to come to America and this happens while they are here. I fealt really sorry for one really nice, sweet girl from Uzbekistan. She was riding her bus to school and someone took out their anger on her. One more thing, my speech teacher that had "something to take care of." has a brother that worked in the Pentagon. The plane hit where his office was located. Luckily he was running late that day and wasn't in his office. </text>

              <text>My husband and I had our first child, Kayla on September 7, 2001. The 11th of September was just two days after I returned home from the hospital with her. My husband Eric is in the National Guard, Military Police. Never in a million years did we expect something to happen. However at about 9:30 on the 11th I called him at work and asked him if he would have to leave. At 1:00 that afternoon while I was on the way to the doctor with my mother and our daughter for her 1 week check up, he called to say goodbye and that he didn't know when he would be home. He was gone for 3 weeks. He came home for 1 month and left again for 4 weeks. I will never forget the horror I felt that morning. A new mother, and my husband in a place that nobody knew if it was safe or not. Not only that, I grew up on Long Island and had friends that worked in NYC. One of my friends lost his father, an old music student of mine lost her father and my father lost patients from his Chiropractic business. God does work in mysterious ways though. You see, my daughter was 2 weeks early. Had she been on time, my husband would have been gone and my mother would not have been able to come up to Buffalo because she lived on Long Island and she would have been stuck there. Praise God for that and for the wonderful President that we have running our country now and getting us through these times!!</text>

              <text>As most have said it all started out as a normal day, I woke up late, jumped in the shower, threw on some clothes and went to school. I was sitting in Mr. Corcoran?s second period English class when one of the janitors walked in and told Mr. Corcoran that the World Trade Center had just been hit. He turned on the television and we all watched in amazement, even though I really didn?t understand what was going on and how bad it was.
	Amanda, my best friend and I walked together and there watched it on TV too. We kind of just ignored it though, because we didn?t know the seriousness of it. All that I cared about was getting out of school early, even though we didn?t.
	I got home that afternoon and went to the basement where my mom stared blankly at the television, I just acted like nothing was wrong. She explained the seriousness of it to me so now I understand.
	 I guess that is was just like a movie to me, and I think that that is how it has always been. I do not want to sound like I?m ungrateful for all of the people who helped us out because I am very grateful, and I do mourn with those who lost loved ones and friends. I guess that that day my mind just couldn't comprehend what damage it did to our nation.</text>

              <text>How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience.
I was born and raised 45 minutes North of Manhattan, in a town in West Chester County. But I spent many years in Manhattan, enjoying all the culture, shopping, food, people, and events. I have family that works in Manhattan, they commute everyday, and on 9/11 I was in my car in Virginia Beach, Virginia with the radio blaring listening to 101.3, and the radio broadcaster said, 'Oh, my god. A plane flew into the Twin Towers.' And I thought how the heck could that happen. And I got a chill, and the guy on the radio kept repeating himself. Then he said, 'Oh, my god. Another one flew into the other tower.' I was confused.
Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell os how.
Yes, Well, I realized how in a moment a human breath can be taken away. I realized how important it is to tell your children and the people that are most important in life how much you care and how much you love them, and how much they mean to you. I would never want to take my last breath not knowing those dearest to my heart didn't know that. To me that may have been truly the saddest thing to me. I do believe in life everlasting, but to leave here not knowing those that meant the most to you, not knowing is the saddest thing of all.
What do you think should be remembered about September 11th?
I think that people should remember we are vulnerable, we are human and we are definitely strong, and we will survive.
Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th?
Yeah. It didn't change, it just magnified my beliefs, and my strength for this country and these people.</text>

              <text> The day began as any other normal day. I was ready to begin my job as a teacher at Yazoo City High School. I assumed the day would be like any other day. Both myself and my students would receive a lesson that will never be forgotten.
    First period came and went. Second period Advanced Placement Biology students and I went to the science lab to complete an experiment. The teacher next door to us said you have to turn on the television and see what has just happened in New York City. In a small town in Mississippi, I watched, along with my five students, as the World Trade Center buildings fell to the ground. I immediately thought of the people who did not make it out of those buildings and the individuals aboard the planes who became innocent pawns in a so called "spiritual"war.
   As we watched in disbelief ,the news came about the plane crashing into the Pentagon and the plane crashing into the we heard of the plane crash in I prayed that they were ChristiansI remember needing to simply find a seat in order to sit down because my legs grew weak at the site on the television screen. I could only think of the families who would be changed forever. September 11, 2001 would be the first day of the rest of their life. I felt the need to call my mother and make sure everything was okay. I called students parents to let them know they were okay. Then we simply watched the news unfold throughout the day. Students were glued to the television screen.
    I could not help but remember being a college student and seeing the space shuttle explode as I was leaving the dorm headed to an afternoon class. Once again I sit and wonder what is the world coming to. </text>

              <text>I could tell by the sound of her voice that something was wrong. My mom left me two messages (from New York) while I was in the shower. It was my cousin who reached me first and asked if I was watching TV. Hearing the concern in her voice I know it had to do with my brother and the Trade Center.

I will never forget my hysteria and fear I had when I saw what happened. I was there in 93, I knew what he was going through. Calls flooded my home, my dad came to my house to be with me. We ran out for cigarettes, a moment in church, and then we were back watching the rest of the chaos unfold.

The first tower came down and my dad screemed. I couldn't watch and I couldn't remember which one was 2 WTC. Then the second tower came down. I knew he couldn't have had enough time from 69th floor. We both screamed, cried, panicked. I threw the phone across the room, punched 2 holes in my wall, curled up in a ball on the floor and cried hyserically.

I called my other family members home. We were preparing for the worst and 3 hours later, we found out he had made it out in time. Enought time to run up to Bleekcer Street before the first tower fell.

We spoke at 6pm and I cried my eyes out afterwards because it was what he didn't say that made me knew he witnessed so much. Roy and I stayed up till 2:30 watching it over and over again from bed, probably still in shock.

In the days following, I found out I lost a former co-worker and high school aquaintance. I almost lost my brother. I've changed some in ways I cannot explain. I used to love to fly and did often. I won't now. I don't want to anymore.</text>

              <text>At the time I Lived in Orlando Florida. It was a week before 09/11 and I was debating weather to go see my brother in NJ. He was very ill and had a leg amputated. I was never afraid to fly and I don't think that was the case. I had a feeling something terrible was going to happen. I knew I had to go see my brother but I did not know how I was going to do it. I was very scared and I mentioned it to my husband Frank who assured me nothing was going to happen to me. On Sunday September 9th., late that night I purchased my plane ticket through Spirit Ailines to leave Monday morning. I always sit on the side of the plane where you can see the city, It is a beautiful sight coming in. I remember searching for my camera and not finding it in my bag as I flew past the World Trade Center. I could not believe the beauty of it all. A tear rolled down my face. You see I had not flown into New york in Years we always drove so I had not seen the City from the air in years.
The Next morning September 11 awoke by my husband around 7:05am ( he was on night shift Working in Orlando). Got out of bed and proceeded to get ready to go see my brother in NJ I was staying with my sister in Brooklyn. My sister josie could not move fast enough that moring she was very slow. We were suppose to be in NJ around 9:30 that morning to pick up my grandaughter Kia at the path train in Union Square leaving from the World Trade Center. It was aroung 8:30 and Josie still was not ready. I put the Television and watched it for a little while when the news came on to annouce a plane had hit the world trade center. I mentioned to Josie that we could not take the path train from the WTC since there was fire and a plane had hit one of the towers we would need to go to 34th st. when a second plane struck the 2nd tower. At that moment I knew it was a terroist attack on the USA. I called my husband who was already in bed and I woke him to inform him of the tragedy he was in disbliefe. I must have called everyone I knew in orlando. I panicked. I knew I was not going home anytime soon. I tried car rentals, Amtrack and Grey Hound everything was booked. I could not get out of the city I had loved so much all these years. For the next hour or so we stood on a foot bidge off of Liuquer Ave in Broolyn watching the Twin Towers burn and fall to the ground. I cried like I had lost a perosnal friend. I grew up in the Alfred Smith Projects and saw the WTC go up and I saw them come down. I did get to see my brother the following day we took the train on 34th. St. His bedroom window faced the WTC and he watched all. I could not get out ot the city until Saturday September 15th. Spirit Airlines had a flight leaving that morning. I had never seen Laguardia Airport so empty. I have to say I have never been so ashame of myself in my life. There was a family of what looked to be of the middle east and it scared me to death. I had window seat 9 on the right side of the plane and all I could think of was "dear lord please do not let me sit next to them" and sure enough the husband and his son were seated in the two seats next to mine. I asked the flight attendent if I could switch seats and he said it would be ok, there was plenty of empty seats. The husband ask me if there was a problem and I lied and told him no I am afraid to sit in the front of the plane. As soon as I was able to I switched seats. After I had to ask god for forgivness. I was never so ashamed of my self. My life has changed since that terrible day in September. I appriciate my family now more then ever. I have moved to NY so I can be closer to my Family. Alot has happened to my and my family since Septembe 11th. In October husbands grandfather passed away then the following monday his brother also passed away. My brother passed away the following January of an infection. I still morn the saddeness that has affected this whole nation. May God bless us all.

In Remembrance of September 11, 2001

Homily by

Readings:
Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14
Luke 15: 11-32

This sure has been some week! Where does one begin? Thomas Paine wrote in The American Crisis, no.1 (December 23, 1776), These are the times that try mens souls.

Well, this past week has been trying times for all Americans. Today, there are no hyphenated Americans--not Irish-Americans, not Italian-Americans, not African-Americans, or others…There are just Americans who have been assaulted by the horrors and hatred unleashed by forces of evil. Even on the news there was a weeping Frenchwoman who said, Today, we are all Americans.

Know well! These were not acts by Arabs, or Muslims, or any true followers of the Koran. They were acts by fanatics filled with so much hatred that their hearts were blackened to evil. In many ways they are just like the KKK or skinheads whom are not righteous Christians, but forces of hate.

The root of the word terror, or terrorism, comes from the Indo-European base tre (shake or tremble) and means to shake with fear. It does well to understand that the aim of terror is to break your spirit, to cause you fear, to fall into despair and darkness. However, we have a God, the Rock of Ages, who is the God of mercy, the God of hope and the God of light. So let us walk in the light, steadfast in faith!

This past week my feelings have been like a yo-yo--shock, horror, sorrow, sadness, fear, anger, helplessness, compassion, frustration, concern--as Im sure yours were too. There was an intensity of emotions colliding with the depth of our feelings, overwhelmed by the magnitude of these tragic events. However we cannot act simply on our feelings. In recent days there has been one word that is often used in speeches, prayers and sermons, and that word is--RESOLVE!

For those who know me, that means a trip to the dictionary to make sure I understand the terms used. In the Random House Dictionary the definition of resolve is as follows:

 . . . to come to a definite or earnest decision about; to determine…to progress from dissonance to consonance.…to make up ones mind, dedicate oneself to, decide,…fixed intention, commitment, purpose…steadfast purpose, firmness of intent.

There is no doubt about it, emotions are running high. There is a desire to hit back--to hurt someone, something--but we must have greater resolve, in our faith and as a citizen.

By far, this has been the most difficult sermon I have had to prepare. So much needs to be said, but where are the proper words? What can be said at a moment like this in history? What words adequately can convey the horror and shock we feel at this catastrophic evil? These are difficult times with no quick and easy answers, just--Why?…Why?…Why?

One feels so unbelievably inadequate in times like this, and then there are these readings on repentance and the Prodigal Son parable (Lk. 15:11-32). Where to begin?

Across the nation, church services were overflowing during the week. And churches are packed this weekend as people try to make sense of this tragedy, come to grips with the terror brought into their homes. People of all faiths are joining together to lift up their hearts, their spirits and their voices.

Many prodigal sons and daughters have turned to God during this time. In an instant, priorities were changed and values converted. Time will tell if these outpourings of faith are a resolve to turn around their lives, or transitory seeking of comfort and solace.

September 11, 2001--a day that will be remembered always. For out of the very worst man was capable of, the very best has been brought forth--through the heroic efforts by firefighters, police and rescue personnel; through the thousands of caring and compassionate volunteers who stepped forward in this time of crisis.

Max Lucado wrote, We are not as self-centered as we were. We are not as self-reliant as we were. Yes, hearts are pierced, heads are bowed, knees are bent, but united we stand! A glimmer of hope continues to shine through the clouds of darkness and terror.

We read from Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my salvation--whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid?…When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.…Hear my voice when I call, O Lord; be merciful to me and answer me. My heart says of you, Seek his face! Your face, Lord, I will seek.… Teach me your way, O Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.…I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

And, we see in New York harbor, Lady Libertys torch brightly beaconing hope amid these darkest hours of terror. If we hold to the Lord as our light and our salvation there is no darkness so dark that can dim even the tiniest flicker of faith, hope and freedom.

Again, we read in St. Pauls Letter to the Ephesians (5:8-9) …now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.

Rev. Billy Graham, speaking last Friday at the National Cathedrals prayer service, reminded us that we need to be moved more by compassion for one another rather than contempt of our enemies. Evil cannot be faced with rampant, unbridled hatred; for then we become that which we most deplore--our hearts too can be turned to a similar blackness of hatred. In the days ahead, we should not be interested in revenge, but be interested more in mobilizing people to channel their energies to serve a greater good.

It is important that each of us examines our heart in response to God saying to Moses: They have turned aside from the way I pointed out to them…(Ex. 32:7-11, 13-14). The Gospel Imperative is Now! Now is the time…Today not tomorrow. This is the day each of us must be prepared, to repent of our ways and return to the ways of the Lord.

So what can we do? How do we respond? How do we focus, or channel, our pent-up feelings and emotions to do something?

I propose, that each one of us resolves in a greater way seeking to walk in the light of the Lord, and not crawl in the pits of despair; that each one of us resolves to be a man or woman of compassion, and not of contempt; that each one of us pray with great expectancy, and with firm resolve that this day, and every day, that we become instruments of Christs peace.

Please join me in praying The Peace Prayer, attributed to the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi:

Today, Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light, and
Where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and
It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

In closing, we pray: National Prayer (adapted from www.mamarocks.com)

Lord, we come to You on bended knee, heads bowed and our hearts filled to overflowing with so much grief for the many people who have died, for those injured and for the families waiting for word of the missing, any word.

We ask you Lord, to give courage and strength to those who so bravely go to their aid. And though their hearts will be heavy and filled with sorrow we ask Lord that You give them the endurance needed to help them through this difficult task.

Please give us the strength Lord, to get through each difficult and devastating day that faces each of us and our country. Protect and guide our Military that are now being called to duty.

We ask Lord, that You guide the leaders of our great country in their hour of decision. The burden that has been placed on their shoulders during this crisis is overwhelming. We ask that with Your infinite wisdom You guide them gently to the right decisions.

And lastly Lord, we ask that You allow us all to come together as a Nation, to stand tall and united, so that we might help each other in our hour of need.

Amen.</text>

              <text>I had been in the Air Force since Jan 2001. I was in Tech School at Sheppard AFB in Wichta Falls TX, learning how to be a crew chief of the F-16 Fighting Falcon. I had graduated tech school in July 2001 and was waiting for orders. Mean-while I was persuing my education at MSU. When I arrived at MSU at 0800hrs I noticed that the flag was Flying high above the school. I went to class and started my tests. A series of five. After the first two tests we had a break. So I went outside for some fresh air. When I did I had notice that the flag was now at half-staff. I knew immidiatley something was wrong, so I wen't to my car and turned on the radio. It was all aver the news... every station... That one of the twin towers have been hit by an aircraft. Moments latter they were describing as they were watching, the second tower had been attacked. I was at a loss. We had to finish the tests, and needless to say it was hard to concentrate after that. When they testing was finished, I h!
ad recieved a call telling me to report back to duty asap. On the way back I stoped to chek on my family, and let them know that it might be a while befor I got back home again. When i had got back to base, we were on Threat-Con Delta. When I finnaly got back on base after the inspection of my vehicle I was amazed at the silence. Every day while i was there thier were jets flying and studen't walking everywhere. But when I got there, All jets were grounded and no one could be found.Everyone was in there dorms as a required security measure. Even the birds had stoped chirping. All the roads on base was baracaded, and all I could think about was revenge. Since that day I have had the opertunity to serve my country in the war on terrorism. When I arrived at my permanent duty station, my unit was one of the first units deployed to Afganistan to Defend our Great Nation. My feelings of Sept 11, 2001 run deep, and will fight til the end to keep this Great Nation of ours safe for our generations to come. God Bless Americe!
