This heinous crime has spawned an awakening in today?s youth. Now we feel a strong sense of patriotism, a love of life, and new religious affiliations. Pre-911, God was hardly mentioned or spoken of. However after the attacks, we changed to say, ?God bless America?, and we say more prayers. The nation as a whole sees life as a more precious gift than ever before. We now see it like this because thousands of lives were lost in the blink of an eye. The whole aspect of family and a sense to loved and needed is now tugging at hearts. Patriotism burns hotter in our hearts and minds than in the previous years. Some of our patriotic feelings were that of hatred toward those who would harm our families, our children, or us. Some of us are inspired to help in the healing process, while others take up arms to defend our rights. No matter which type of patriotism is displayed, it all comes down the simple fact that we?re looking evil in the eye and saying, ? you cannot win?. Evil, you come as wars, terrorist attacks, threats, plagues, and famine, but you?ve never beaten the American people and never will! As for myself on that horrible day, I was out raged, sad, inspired, and felt my own sense of adulthood and patriotism. When I saw the first tower on fire, I was angry that terrorists had the nerve to pull a stunt like that in the middle of a busy city, on a busy day, hurting my fellow Americans who are just trying to provide for their families. I felt like picking up a gun and going to war. I still feel this way. If the marines and my country need me to fight, I?m ready physically and mentally. My inspiration came from the realization that life can be taken from you in a split second. I now try to use my time more wisely, and spend as much of what little time is left with the ones that I love. My family and my need to feel loved are most important. I also was inspired to make the most of my life. If I could pin point one thing that inspired to do this is to not let those brave soldiers, fighting and dying for my right to live, down. I owe it to them to be the best person I can be. I cannot let them down, because if I do then their giving of their lives was all for nothing. Adulthood for some comes at a steep price. Due to the events of 9-11, I now feel a sense of responsibility to myself, those fighting for my rights and those who gave their service and lives so that I might enjoy freedom. Reality has fully hit me. I no longer live under the protective wings of innocence nor am I under the wings of my parents. I no longer have my own little perfect world; instead I now live in reality. This forces me to take a stand, pick sides, and fight for what I believe is right. The doorway to adulthood was opened on September 11th and I had no choice but to go through. I always thought of America as just a place where I reside. Now all that has changed. Now I feel a need to defender her, help her, respect her, and uphold the ideals and principles for which she stands. The feeling of patriotism is very difficult to describe. It is a fiery passion that burns in my heart. You just know it when you feel it, and it never goes away. September 11th has affected all Americans in one way or another. Those hundreds of people, who died, didn?t die in vain. Instead they died as heroes lost in the war of good verses evil. Their deaths unite us all, and remind us that we must constantly fight for what is right, good, and just. I headed off to work, anxious to start the day, so i could return home to celebrate my day with my family.I am a two year cancer survivior, i have learned how short life can be.It was 9:00 a.m when my husband had called to tell me a plane had hit the world trade center. i just could not comprehend what he was telling me. It took a series of telephone conversations for it to sink in.By the time i had returned home the thought of celebrating was so far from my mind.I have never in my life have experienced such soorow for the lives lost on that day. We were watching the news when the second plane hit, and neither of us realized what had just happened. After we heard about the Pentagon we realized we were under attack. I remember watching t.v. and a tear began to trickle down my face, I just could not believe this was happening. Then when they showed people jumping from the building because they could not bear the heat, I was so sad. I watched the news for almost twelve hours that day, the longest time ever.I wonder how could anyone impose this kind of horror on anyone. Tell us your story: I'm writing this on the first anniversary of the attacks, and I can hardly believe it's been a year- so much has changed, and yet so much is the same. One year ago today, I was a third year Family Practice resident at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. I was working in our primary care clinic in Kasson, a small town just west of Rochester. My first inkling of what was happening back East came from my friend Nima, a New Jersey native. I myself grew up in South Florida (often jokingly called the Sixth Borough for good reason), and we were the only two Easterners in the clinic that day. She told me a small plane had hit the WTC, and while we thought it was odd, we weren't overly alarmed. Then news came that it was a commercial plane. That's when my heart leaped into my throat, because my father is a commercial pilot. Then there was a second plane. We had no TV and no radio in the clinic, so our only source of news was the patients coming in for their appointments. Even when I realized that my father couldn't have been on one of the planes, I felt ill; I have always worried about hijackings and crashes, and I knew instantly how the families would feel. I knew the instant I heard it was commercial jetliners that it was a hijacking and that the pilots had been killed long before the planes hit the towers. That made me feel even worse. The Pentagon attack startled me even more. By the time I heard about the crash in Pennsylvania, I was staggered. But that was also the first time I felt hope: we all looked at one another as we listened to what the passengers had said on their cell phones, and we knew: _They fought back. And they won._ It wasn't enough to save themselves, but they saved God only knows how many others- and they were the first heroes of a war that is still going on. They were the ones to prove to us all that the enemy is not infallible- that they can be beaten. I admire those passengers more than words can say. If any of their family members read this, I want them to know that. The towers fell, and the mad rush to find everyone we know and love in NYC began- which, from the Midwest, was nearly impossible. Phone lines were down or jammed. But then, people suddenly remembered the most powerful form of communication in the US: "The Grapevine" became a mighty conduit for information. And it worked. Networks of friends, families, and neighbors set out to spread what news they had, and to give comfort where they could. Then everything started flowing to New York: supplies, fire departments, volunteers, blood, money, everything. And America pulled itself together in a way that I know would have made the Founding Fathers proud. Things in Rochester were tense for several days, with several security scares. Mayo was considered a possible target for a brief period, though the FBI had no specific information; fortunately, nothing came of the worries. Mayo held a memorial ceremony that involved the closing of the front doors of the Mayo Clinic. They never close, to symbolize that the Clinic is always there for those in need. They have only been closed a handful of times, and the last one was for JFK's assasination in 1963. In the days after the ceremony, a makeshift memorial began to build itself outside the doors, with rubble and grit and chunks of concrete and steel appearing as if from nowhere, along with flowers and flags and notes. It's still there on display, in the basement of the Gonda Building; it's moving, and lovely, despite the grimness of what it symbolizes, and a reminder that even a small Midwestern town has ties to the rest of the world. And then there was the small matter of my wedding. We were getting married on October 6 in a town just north of Boston, and the Boston airport was closed down. My dress was still in New York, and no planes were flying to get it out of the City. And we had no idea if anyone would be able to come, with cancelled flights and closed airports and fear of flying at an all-time high. Worst of all, I felt incredible guilt at trying to plan such a happy event in the midst of such grief. I left it lie for over a week, overcome myself, and finally decided that life had to go on. My dress arrived Fed-Ex and Logan Airport reopened, and then it was just a matter of hoping everyone would come. It looked for a while as if no one could. But then, a week before the wedding, people realized that this was a chance to see, to talk with, to embrace the loved ones they had worried over for so long. Two and a half weeks of grief and pain needed relief, and everyone suddenly determined to come to our wedding, no matter what. They needed something to feel hope and joy over, to remind themselves that there is still good in the world. And they came. They came by car, by plane, by train, by bus, and by the skin of their teeth, in more than one instance. One friend could not come, because her position as an active duty Air Force officer called her overseas. I missed her- but she knows how grateful I am to the men and women who, like she does, answer the call of duty and country. It was the most wonderful day. That single day we all had to tell everyone we loved them, to look at them and know that they were really all right, was the best wedding gift we could have had. It helped me to start healing, and I know it made all the difference in the world to everyone who was there. They've told me so. Our honeymoon, which included stops in London, Edinburgh, and Paris, was definitely less than crowded, which was nice. When asked if I wasn't afriad to fly, I replied that I was not- for anyone foolish enough to try anything would find themselves confronted with 348 very angry passengers- and me at the front of the line. After the bravery of the passengers on Flight 93, how could I do less? I still don't worry much about flying. I know they're talking about arming pilots; part of me wants the pilot's job to be to fly the plane, and someone else's job to defend it. But the rest of me knows that, if it's a plane full of Americans, that plane and that crew have as many defenders as there are seats. I am blessed with a wonderful husband and family, a country of which I am so incredibly proud, and fellow Americans who are made of the same tough stuff as those 226 years ago, who founded this idea on a dream. Those people are you- the people reading this story now. I am so proud of you- of us, of this nation, and all that we can do together. One year later, the phoenix rises from the ashes, and it's as beautiful as ever, swathed in flames of red, white, and blue. The school had are teahers trun on the T.V. so the school could wacth it when I saw it I ran out of the room to go use the phone I didnt care if I got in trouble I wanted to see if he was alright. On the day of the terrorist attacks we were beggining a week-long vacation in Maine. After a two day drive from Philadelphia we reached Bar Harbor on Monday evening. On Tuesday morning, Sept. 11th, we were up early planning to visit Acadia National Park. We were just back from breakfast at our hotel when my husband called me out of the shower to show me something he saw on CNN(he was surfing channels while waiting his turn for the bathroom).As I stood there staring at the TV I was surprised to see the smoking hole in the center of the first tower.We were debating whether or not it was a small plane that hit the building or a large jet when the next plane hit. We were seeing this on live TV and it was very upseting (to say the least).After that, we were glued to the TV for the rest of the morning. This was the first day of our long-awaited trip to Acadia National Park, but this news story was too frightening and tragic--we couldn't leave the room. As the morning wore on and we learned of the plane hitting the Pentagon and the one that crashed in Pennsylvania I became quite frightened--not knowing what would be happening next. This could have been the beginning of a big war for all we knew--but we were powerless and could do nothing about it.There was some comfort in learning the all flights had been stopped around the nation but there was still a feeling of doom in the air.I couldn't get those images out of my head--the towers falling and all the terror in the streets of New York.Here we were in Maine, far from the disaster sites but still feeling connected to it all. By the afternoon we decided to leave our hotel room and go to the park as we had planned. We decided to keep to the Park Loop Road so we could get back to our car every hour to hear the news.(We also tried, unsuccessfully, to reach our children back in Philadelphia but the phones were not working).The weather that day was glorious and the park was magnificent. We stood on Sand Beach(our first stop of the day) and looked out on pristine ocean,majestic pine trees, and rocky cliffs that are the signature of Acadia. I was struck by the peace and beauty still left in the world despite all of the horror unleashed by the terrorists.It was a sign of hope and comfort to me. Our National Parks are a real treasure, a place to savor the beauty of our country and appreciate its gifts to us all.On our way home from Acadia, after a glorious few days in the wilderness of Maine, we drove by the area of New York where the towers once stood. The familiar New York skyline seemed empty except for the smoke still coming from the smoldering site.I snapped a photo of the scene from the car. At 6:00 am local time , I boarded the plane . I remember watching cnn before getting on the plane( boring stuff), there was nothing about the attacks then. My biggest concern at the time was having nice seat near the alise and not smelling other people body oder for 5 hours. I was still suffering from jet lag and my bioclock was out of wack. So I was running out autopilot. The plane was crowded and I was feeling put upon by individuals with too much carryon luggage and crying babies. As single person, I know , I am self center in my view of the world. The captain can on the loud speaker, and the announed the first attack on he world trade. I sitting there like everyone else on the plane dumbfounded.I was just thinking about myself and getting home . The reality of the people that had just lost their lives was not on my mind.To me at that time their deaths were not as importnt having a nice trip home. Then came word of the second attack and the of pentagon attack. The captain announed that the flight was cancel and we will be evacting the plane. Confused and anger , I had to think fast and clearing. After the plane was evacted, I was in strange airplane in a town and knew no one. Terminate was a madhouse people going everywhere. Then another announament, for everyone leave the gate area and return the main terminal. I was thinking now what to do next. I notice other individuals had family and friend to help and guide them.They were the lucking one. I was stranger and in strange land. I was able to find my luggage and I proceed to the united terminal. There I was informed that the airport would be closing soon and there was no hotel room available near airport.Now the airport was beening evacted an the authorities were not letting in cabs. I was able to contact the the hotel in downtown seattle were I have been standing . They had watching the news also and agree to hold my room. Great first piece of luck for me in this odessey(great great). The airport authority agree to allow cabs into the airport parking. As I made my way to the parking area carrying luggages and surrounded by scare individuals like myself.People were states that we were at war. People were hugging their love one. They were overcome with joy . A large limousine pull into the parking area. I took one look at it , and informed the driver that I could not afford this into seattle. The driver then informed me that it would only be thrity dollar. Wow great . He pick up two another passagers . These individuals were from germany. I could not comprehend what was going though their minds at this time. The driver allow me to use the phone ,I did not have my cell phone with me.I tried several to call family and friends back east . I wanted to tell my family that I was ok, I was off the plane. All lines back east were blocked(overloaded). My family knew my travel plans. I knew they would scare. I made my way back to the hotel my room had not been rent out and they were most helpful in this time of need. When I got to my room I tried several again to call family. My parnets are news junkie,We watch the news all the time. I knew that they were going out of their mind with worry. I knew that there was internet cafe up the street from the hotel. Email I thought, I ran up this street to the cafe. The individuals at the cafe were still unaware of what happen . I set up hotmail account and email my family that was ok, was back at the hotel. I also told them not to worry. A guy sat down near and he started surfing the net and drinking his coffee. I asked him if he knew what just happen . He look at me and staed no. I showed him the cnn. He almost fell to his knee with disbelief. I returned back to my hotel room (THE ALEXIS). I was inundated with the news and of the date events. I saw the palastines dancing in the street with joy. At that point the reality was setting. Three thousand just lost their lives for being on a plane and people were dancing in the street about it. Countless families were just ripped apart for nothing and these palastines were dancing, god damm it. They were dancing . The anger that I had never felt before was very real to me. The Anger almost a being of itself was very real. I made contact with the company that I was interviewing with in seattle. They were great also. They said that they would pick up tap and make arrangement to get me home.I know that I could not just sit in a hotel watching the news. This was not healthy. I went up to pike street market. I passed a news stand , I noticed the arabic newspaper. I wanted to tear the newspaper off the shelf,and tear it into pieces. That anger wanted to manafest itself in a very real way. I didn't do it ,the anger was a beast ready to show it self to the world. After getting something to eat and a cold beer, I was able to call home. Everyone was glad hear from me. They knew my flight number and knew that I did not make off the ground. I spend the next six in seattle and took a couple day to the mt and victoria ca. I walked back from my lunchbreak past the TV in the canteen, my eyes flickered over the TV and carried on towards the door, some kind of daft sci-fi/disaster type film.... I remember going back to my desk (after another cigarette and a hug from my man of the time who luckily was in the same building as me) and no-one upstairs knew what was going on, I told them to go down and look, the phones didn't ring that afternoon, apart from people trying to access news sites on the 'net and not able to (I work in an ISP).... it was too horrible to digest.... driving home after picking up my baby from her childminders, I remember listening to some crappy UK sports radio show who just talked about what was happening and what it might mean for us all, the fear of terror alerts the world over, I remember being so very sad, so very scared and so very not wanting my daughter to ever have to experience that type of day ever, ever..... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Like most people, I drove into work enjoying the same beautiful weather New Yorkers were experiencing. A day like any other. Someone in our building heard the initial report on the radio. Due to a snow storm where several people were stranded in the building, the television was still in the cafeteria. We turned it on and watched in disbelief. For the entire day we went in and out of the cafeteria to watch. Some remained there most of the day. I called some friends and amazingly some had not heard and thanked me. That night we continued to watch throughout the evening and in the weeks to come. The first thing I did when I got home was to turn on the news for something new, someone found alive or dead, a reason for this horror. We finally decided to fly to New York and put some of this to rest and see for ourselves. We were not prepared even though we thought we were. It was December, a few weeks before Christmas and the contrasts were everywhere. I am glad we made that trip. It settled some things for me, but I'll never forget and sincerely hope our county never forgets the taking of all those innocent lives. However, I was born and lived the first 40 years of my life in New York City. I am still grieving for the dead and it is 2 years later. There has not been a day that has gone by since those awful events that I do not think about it. Here in New York there are always reminders; we still fly our flags, paste memorial stickers on our cars, wear t-shirts that honor FDNY and PDNY heroes. The planes of Kennedy airport and LaGuardia still scream over our heads, low and loud, reminding us of how fast they could turn into instruments of terror and death. At work on that day a visitor to our center said "Did you hear? A plane crached into the World Trade Center". A coleague of mine jumped up and shouted "What are you saying - my sistter works there!" In a flury of near-hysterical tears, she left work (her sister made it out and survived). I called home, surprised that the phone lines weren't jammed. By that point the second plane had hit and the pentagon as well. We were given false reports that the Stae Department had been hit and that there were 4 unaccounted for planed still in the air headed, presumably, for other targets. I thought to myself "this is war; our way of life is over". I now think that democracy is an idea only - and a powerful one here in America. We stand on this idea - political leaders, the military and citizens alike. We could have lost it so easily that day except for our common and profoundly held commitment to it. That morning my mom woke me up for schhol like she did every day the year previous, but that day she urgently woke me up and told me to turn on the T.V. so I did. What i saw then was ,for me, the scariest sight in the world. When I got to school that day my friend told me that he was there the Tuesday the week before the attack and i was horrified.
