Tell us your story: Thu Nguyen History 103 Extra Credit May 7, 2002 911 From My Point of View On the morning of September 11, 2001, I woke up at around 9:45am from my TV set's alarm. The channel was on CNN and it seemed to me like there was smoke coming from a very tall building. I wasn't quite sure which building or where this building was situated and I wasn't even sure if the footage was from a movie or real life? I sat there upon my bed and watched for 5 minutes or so until I heard a reporter say that one of the World Trade Center Towers was on fire. At the time, I did not know what caused the fire. Because I had class that morning I had to get ready and prepare for class. As I was walking to my first class, a man hollored to me "Hey, did you catch the news this morning?" I asked "Ummmm...Do you mean, The World Trade Center?" He then said "Yes....We've been attacked!". When I heard him say that I was surprised, and I was feeling concerned for the people inside the building. In my mind, I was asking myself "Who could have done this to us?". I then asked the man, "Do you know who is attacking us?" He then says, "I don't know? It could be anyone but I have a feeling that it may be someone who's been a threat to us for a long time." The man I was speaking to then told me he had a friend who works there and he's not sure if they are okay or not. I then told him, "I hope that everyone will be okay and that help will arrive soon". Finally before I went into class, I wished the man good luck and hoped that everything would be okay. Upon entering class, I realized something different about it. My class seemed empty with only half of the students showing up. While a few people walked out during the lecture, I decided to stay and listen to the whole lecture. Nobody was in the mood to learn that day including myself but as we all know, 'the show must go on'. After class was out I went to the commons at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. In there, everyone was gathered around watching, patiently and intently at CNN News. No person was speaking and everybody watched with interest and concern. It was the first time I've ever seen the whole school gathered around the television like that. Normally, there would only be a handful of people there during the week, but on September 11, it was a whole new atmosphere as throngs of people gathered around to witness the event. After leaving J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, I immediately had another class at 1:45pm at a different campus, VCU. Before I walked into class, I saw a note on the door saying "Class will be cancelled today. We will continue class on Thursday". Soon after that, I went back to my car and started driving home. As I was listening to the radio, almost every station was focused on the situation and constantly reporting facility closings including airports, amusement parks, shopping malls, schools, and any place where you can find masses of people especially tourist attractions like Disneyland, the Sears Towers and Seattle's Space Needle. At this point, I realized the situation had become more serious than I thought. I never thought that the incident that occurred hundreds of miles away would affect my local town or other parts of the nation like this? At home, the mood was the same as at school in that my family was glued to the television set. My family couldn't believe it was really happening. For eight hours we were watching intently as we saw the collapse of both towers, the scattering of civilians, the firefighters and policeman helping and directing traffic, the interviews with witnesses, and finally the constant updates from the news reporters. I was sitting there in disbelief not knowing what to do. I had an exam to study for, but was in no mood to do anything at all. I was concerned about the turnout of events, for example, the number of fatalities and whether or not we will be safe in our homes. Watching the news made me think hard about my life. I thought to myself: "If we are in a war, will I be chosen to fight?" I saw what was happening on television and when I saw those two aircrafts hit the Twin Towers, I knew this was not an accident. Also when I heard that another aircraft hit the Pentagon and yet, another one crashing in Pennsylvania, I was even more convinced that this was not an accident but a heinous act of vandalists. I was so worried about what was going to happen next. The suspense and drama kept me on my feet and kept me up all night. When the local news appeared, I got to see the reaction from people living in my area. I was so touched by the amount of support and care taken by the people living near me. I saw local residents (of different nationalities, religions, and ages) heading to the churches, holding candles, praying, and spending their time to support our beloved country. It was the first time I've ever seen my community get together like this. I was so proud to be living in such a caring and loving place. People were helping and supporting each other through their kind acts, their consoling words, and their time. A few days after 911, I was even more inspired when musicians and actors came together to help support the victims. On MTV, I got to see artists including Bono, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jermaine Dupris, and many others trying to make a difference by recording a song together called "What's Going On? In Hollywood, I saw actors giving donations and expressing their remorse for the situation. The same love and support that I saw in my local town had been spread across the whole nation. It was an incredible event and it was great to see people putting their differences aside and coming together as a whole unit. September 11 is probably one of the most terrible tragedies I've ever witnessed in the United States. I never thought that a war could ever occur in the United States. It took me a while to adjust to it because I'm so used to seeing wars fought on other battlegrounds overseas. Now, I know that anything is possible. As a result of 911, I now realize the strength and power of our nation. Our nation is filled with so many great ideas from people of all ages, races, and religions. It's a place where people can express thoughts freely and create opportunities. Best of all, the United States is a nation that cares for people during tragedies and times of need. After 911, I can now truly say that I'm very happy to be waving the American flag and being apart of the United States. There's no other place like it in the world, and I'm very honored to call it my home. Tell us your story: First of all I have to say that I am still in shock and have a sense of disbelief that the attacks on September 11, 2001 happened. I spent time during my college days at Rutgers in New Brunswick, NJ in the shadow of the Twin Towers. I rode the escalator in the hotel dwarfed by them. I've cried while standing in the square at night, looking up until I couldn't see anything, imagining buildings so immense that at the tops, they must touch a piece of heaven...The idea that they fell is so incredible. The idea that so many lives were lost is unimaginable. I work for our local community college and our division was having its monthly staff meeting. Someone mentioned that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center Towers; we were dumbfounded, thinking like many others across the nation and the world I am sure, that a pilot had suffered a heart attack, that there was no way someone could "accidentally" fly into such an imposing structure. Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined what had actually happened. By the time the meeting was finished, the second plane had struck; I tried to get online and had a difficult time. Two co-workers turned on radios, each to a different station, to try and get a sense of what was happening, since we really didn't know the truth. I called my boyfriend and they had a small television tuned in: two planes at the Towers, one at the Pentagon, and one in Pennsylvania. And all on purpose. The college went on alert, as did our county; some offices closed and some classes were cancelled as people wanted to be with their families, watching the tragedy play out on television. We prayed as volunteer EMT workers from our area headed up the New Jersey Turnpike, wondering what horrors they would find, feeling a sense of fear coupled with pride as we went with them in spirit. I finally got into a news website with streaming content, and as I heard the information, I sat in my office and cried. Cried for the senseless loss of life, cried for the hijackers--death in the name of their god, cried for the friends I couldn't reach by phone or email who worked near the Towers, cried for the country. I went home and watched one of the major news channels and cried. I stayed up most of the night, watching and crying. Helpless. I still feel helpless, even though I have heard so many stories of God's intervention that day; one of my dearest friends who works a few blocks from the Towers did not go to work that day because she wasn't feeling well. Her train would have been passing under the first Tower at the time the plane hit it. I know through my Christian belief that God is in everything, and I know that those who lost their lives did not go in vain; we have all heard about the priest who died giving last rites, the firefighters who went up to save others knowing they wouldn't come out, the people who stayed with those who could not leave. But what have we learned? We learned that the United States, the so-called super power of the western world, is not the impenetrable fortress many felt that it was. We learned that in our "darkest hour", we have friends of all colors, faiths, and beliefs--friends who we (the collective country of America) considered foes. We learned what a portion of the world, too long snubbed and ignored, truly thought/thinks of us. We learned that the United States is a troubled land, as our Arab and Muslim neighbors--the people we greet when we pull into our driveways, the parents of the children who carpool with us, the folks we speak to each day by name at our local diner or gas station or nail salon--were being beaten and threatened. Tell us your story: During the morning of 9/11 my husband and I were sleeping in our bedroom in our apartment.----The telephone rang at about 6:30 a.m. and it was my mother saying to turn on the television right away. The remote was by my side and I turned on the television to see the first hit WTC in smoke. Then Tom Brokaw anounced there were other plans missing out of radar and I saw the next building hit. This was horrifying. The whole thing was horrifying.----------I have been to the Towers very often in my life and worked on Wall Street and know the area very well.(I grew up on Long Island)------------------Looking at the updates on the local news everyone in Northern California where my husband and I were living was to "shelter in place"----------a brother of my high school freind, Lenore Bonomo, was a Fireman did not make it out alive.-----------I knew of some people in the Financial Industry who also "passed on".-----------------------A church was on the corner of the block we lresided on at the time and everyone "poured" in to the church including me. I couldn't understand what could make anybody want to do such a thing....... to kill so many innocent people..... I called my parents and my dad kind of explained to me what had happened and why it happened..... then all of a sudden a man called Bin Laden was the most wanted man in the world because he was responsible for these attacks...... I went to school the next day and was surprised at the reaction that I got from my friends...... I live in a Muslim country and many of my close friends are Muslim and one when I told her how I was feeling to all that had happened she said `do you know how many Muslims get killed everyday by American troops? those people on those planes got what they deserved' then they started telling me how all the Americans torture them and what they did the families..... I just got up and walked away and all I could say was `but was it bad enough to kill all those innocent people??..... Tell us your story: I was waking up to attend school on September 11th to my mom telling me that "a plane hit the trade towers" I will never forget the fear and urgency in her voice. I turned on CNN just in time to see the 2nd plane hit and then I knew it was no accident. I remember driving to school and seeing several planes that were directed to land in Chicago. Never have I seen so many planes flying to the same destination at the same time ln my life. Even though I was not in New York during that time and not seeing the actual events, that is an image that still haunts me. There is a difference between seeing events on televison, and seeing them face to face..in some small way, that was my image of September 11th and my realization that it was real. When I reached my university, there were alot of parking spots open, I assumed that several students did not show up due to the events that occured that morning, I then turned around and went back home. That night, I went with a friend of mine to donate blood at a local organization. I remember sitting there with several people (the line of donors was amazing) and everyone in silence to hear the President address the nation. For many nights after that, I can recall being woken up in the middle of the night to hear loud fighter jets above my home, probably due to the increased defense. I will never forget that day, four years later I can still recall the events more clearly than I could a day that occured a week ago. I never had a complete grasp on what September 11th really was about until I started a job in a large office building a few weeks ago. To imagine all of the souls that occupied that building is something I could not phathom until I worked in that type of environment. I remember crying when I saw the individuals pleading on television to find there loved ones and attending memorial services and candlelight vigils. I thoght to myself this must be an accident bot as I watched and saw the second plane hit I knew it was no accident. And I felt a sorrow come over me. I couldnt belive it was true.I thought of the people on the planes and in the buldings and felt pain and prayed for their families.Still not knowing what was about to happen,saw tower one come down,and said god why?Then a few minutes later tower two came down,and I wept thinking of the people who had died praying for their families praying that people would make it out of there. But I knew many didnt.People who where mothers fathers sisters and brothers husbands,wives,grandmothers,grandfathers,and friends,sons,and doughters,did not deserve to be taken away.But for a moment I felt a peace come over me and I knew they where in gods hands,and the cowerds where at gods mercy and they whould get what thy deserve.I didnt go to work that I just wanted to be with my family because I knew then they could be taken away in a moment.But I still had my family and many people where robbed of their loved ones by sick evil cowerds.So to the families of the victoms I prayed for god to lift your hearts,and I still pray for you so please put your faith in god and the a Lord Jesus Christ,and we will all be home with theim one day,and for those who were not victoms hold your loved ones near because they can be taken from you at any time. The morning of the 11th was the first day I could sleep late. My husband woke me up when the news of the first fire came across the television. I refused to wake. I kept saying ya a fire in a skyscraper so what. He said no wake up. He came into my room and turned on the television. Just as I woke and focused on the television. The second plan came in and hit tower two. I watched in horror as a building which I had visited many times as a kid with my grandparents, my parents and school burn. As much as I stared in horror I still believed everything would be okay. I cried for almost a week straight. I still cry when the image comes across the news. I paused every once in a while with a tear falling down my cheek crying for those who were lost and the scars left in our country. It took me four days to contact all my friends and family. Everytime I couldn't reach one I panicked. My little brother was the last to be found. Still unble to contact him my friend drove to his house with her 2 kids and knocked on his door. My family and friends were safe. I scanned the list everytime a new one came out to find out if someone I knew from school or home had perished. No one close to me perished. Only one name I knew was on the list: Paul John Gill -- He was several years ahead of me at MArtin Luther HS but he was a name I KNEW. He was one of NY Fireman that perished. I will never forget that day, because I was unable to walk the next day and watched the whole unbelieveable tragedy play out on the television. I never felt so helpless and yet so fortunate, I have never felt so angry and yet so full of love for my fellow man. I never realized how many wonderful people there are in the world, and I have never been so saddened that there are some very awful people too. Now that a year has gone by I feel no pain in my knee, but I feel deep pain in my heart, because others are hurting. I believe as Edmund Burke that "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing," and as long as one of us are chained - none of us are free. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I have lived in Dover, DE for almost twenty-nine years in the same house. Military actions are not a surprise here. So, when my husband called and asked if I was watching the news, I thought he was going to tell me that something happened over seas. I turned off of the Disney channel to CBS at the same time my husband told me about the first plane. I sat there in ahh of what I was looking at. I started to cry and pray for the people in the building and the plane. The only thing that made me look away from the tv was my 11 month old son which I was feeding at the time. I was putting a spoon of food in his mouth as the second plane hit. I started crying harder and praying more. The only thing my son knew was he was hungry and mommy is crying. I finshed feeding my son and picked him up. I started to rock and pray for everyone in or near the buildings. I prayed and held my little son as the buildings came down. I started feeling guilty for being able to sit on my couch holding my son and talking to my husband. My husband asked if he should go pick up our 2 1/2 year old daughter from school, I said yes. All I wanted was for us to be together. She was going to a school beside the Air Force base. Of course, everything in Dover is close to the base. My husband and I have talked to our daughter about what happened and she knows alot of good people died in NY, Washington,DC and PA. We have prayed for everyone who lost their life, the families here coping with the lose, and our country everyday. We also pray for the people who hate us so much that they want to destroy us. I am a military brat and stand proud knowing my father served in wartime and peacetime so I can raise my children in the land of the free. I thank GOD for all the people who serve our country in so many ways here and overseas. We are all heros because we have not let this act stop us. We have drawn the will power of those who died to pick ourselves up and go forward with our lives. I forgive those people who hate me and my family because we live in the USA. GOD will deal with them and I don't have to waste my energy on them. The best actions for me to take is to have a happy marriage, raise my children happy, healthy, respectful of our freedoms and thankful/proud for the people who fought for us to be free. Tell us your story: From: Frances (Original Message) Sent: 9/11/2001 10:07PM EST September 11, 2001 will be forever marked in our hearts as a day of tragedy and loss. This morning is especially hard for my family and I, as my mother has sent word via email that my cousin is counted among the missing. I had always felt that emotionally my family was prepared for anything. My father retired after serving the Army 22 years in 1995. My younger sister joined the Air force in 2000. During our childhood my father was a great source of pride for us. He was strong, proud, and admired by many. He raised us in Germany and during the Gulf War we actually weren't as scared as most, because we knew the "daddy" could handle anything. In Germany during that time we saw tremendous acts of terrorism. Car bombs, assassination reports on the news, and even several bomb threats at our DODDs schools. We were well prepared emmotionally and I don't believe that we ever really were scared. We knew that our soldiers would protect us. I am 26 years old now, married and all grown up. Yesterday I was terrified! Today I am full of sorrow, worry, and anger. All my life living amongst soldiers and on bases I had been prepared by my mother and father and taught that we were to be strong in the face of danger, tragedy, and war. My parents made us understand that anything could happen to my father because he was a soldier. We were prepared for my father injuries during the Gulf War. When my sister joined the Air force last year, we were all so proud of her. Yesterday when I first heard of what was happening at the WTC, I was shocked and immediately called her, she told be that she was being called in for briefing and we said our "I love you's" and hung up. I was not scared. She is trained. It's her job. I was prepared. But this morning when I heard that my cousin was missing I wasn't prepared. My cousin is a civilian. My mother and father never prepared us for the loss of a civilian family member and we are beside ourselves with grief. Her name is/was Adianes Cortes, she may be also listed under Adianes Cortes-Oyola (she just got married 6 months ago) she's 24 years old. She worked in the South Tower of the World Trade Center 78th floor - Fugi Bank Corp. Her husband made it out he worked in the 60th floor, the airplane crashed unto the 78 through 80th floors. We have not heard any word on her whereabouts. My family asks that we pray for Adianes and all those who are missing or dead. My sister emailed a prayer that is most comforting. "Almighty God we ask that you fill this solemn moment with the majesty of your presence. Our hearts are saddened by the loss of these who have given their lives to sustain the gift of freedom. Tell us your story: You?re probably think now, that my story does not belong here, but maybe it will interest you, that there where people here in Switzerland, who could not believe what happened either. My name is Franziska Glur and on September 11th, 2001 I was in my office of a Swiss Private-Bank dealing some funds, as I always do. It was already in the middle of the afternoon (time-difference), when a colleague of mine across the table said to all of us: there is a fire in the World Trade Centre. I was thinking by myself, please not again remembering the fire back in the early 1990?s. You have to know, that I?ve been to New York several times and have always visited the Twin Towers and taken lots of pictures. Anyway, we turned the TV to CNN and could see that this fire seemed to be different to the last one. And just right then, we saw the explosion in the second building. ?Oh, my God? was all I could say and then in the most noisiest office in our building there was total silence! We could not believe what we had just witnessed! Suddenly CNN came up with the news, that it was a plane that had hit the second building and they showed us the pictures over and over again. ?Is that World War 3 starting?? Questions like this where crossing my mind. Rumours where within minutes in the whole building and our office became a media room for everybody. Some of us in tears, others in shock, but most of all in disbelieve! I called my sister, who was in Florida on vacation with my parents. It was hard to get her on the phone, ?cause the line was always busy. She could not believe it either and turned on the TV in her Hotel room. I told her, that I would call again later. I talked to her another four or five times that day. And as the third plane hit the Pentagon, we all knew that this was very serious! Nobody was really working anymore, ?cause some of us had friends working in the World Trade Centre or knew brokers, which they spoke to almost everyday. Then the towers collapsed! And again silence in our office. I guess we all fought back tears. We all thought, that at least ten thousand must have been killed! On my way home that evening there was this unbelievable silence in the crowded train. Nobody really talked! I myself spent the rest of the day in front of the TV and tried to understand what had happened on that September 11th, 2001. It?s almost a year know! Tell us your story: Ironically, on September 10, I had been looking up airfares to Scotland because I planned, and still went, there in the summer of 2002. There is an email that says the price of an airfare, which I sent at 1 a.m., Sept. 11. I went to bed and got up for my Modern Social Problems class at Georgetown College in Kentucky. It was 8:45, and normally my roommate would have had the television on. But of all days that week, she did not have it on. I also did not check my email that morning, which I normally do. Outside I noticed how perfectly blue the sky was, and I thought it would be a great September day. When I got to my 9:30 class, the professor entered and immediately said, "I'm sure you all have heard about the planes crashing into the World Trade Center." We all looked at him in astonishment. He said that he didn't know a lot of details, but it looked like a terrorist attack, and that if we found bin Laden was behind it, America would seek justice. All of the classrooms are supposed to have televisions, but ours did not. We went ahead with class as normal and got out at 10:45. On the way out several people told us that we were having a campus wide meeting upstairs from where my classroom was located, and also that classes were cancelled for the rest of the day. Before I went there, I went across the hall and called my mom, who lives about an hour away from me. She told me that the towers had collapsed, and that a plane crashed into the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. "It looks like an all-out terrorist attack!" she said. At the campus wide meeting, we listened to updated news and prayed for our nation. A newscaster from the nearby city of Lexington was there anyway to give a talk on women in the media industry, but, of course, that is not what she talked about. There was a question and answer session afterward. I remember how one of our college's main administrators talked about how he hoped we would not lash out at Arab-Americans. It was especially moving because he is Lebanese-American. I also remember students and faculty alike asking questions about war, martial law, the draft (two male students asked about it), casualities, culprits, etc. We adjourned and I went to lunch. My friends and I said we didn't feel like eating, but we knew we had to. I remember a student in front of me on her cell phone who was trying to get in touch with her family and was sobbing. I also remember how a big-screen television was brought into the cafeteria and everyone was watching it. The TV stayed there until January. I went back to my room and watched TV. I didn't call my family much because the local news said to stay off the phone lines. We met as a campus again at that afternoon for more prayer and discussion. Then, I went to a campus prayer vigil at 6 and one at my church at 7. I didn't sleep well that night. The next week it was hard to concentrate on my school work because I was always looking at the news on television and on the internet. As a Christian, I have faith in God, but it doesn't always mean it is easy. My heart went out, and it still does, for those who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Luckily, my family does not know anyone who lost their lives that day. We do know someone who was less than a mile away from the Towers, and we do know a woman whose son escaped from the WTC. We had a new tradition of painting white benches in front of each of the dorms on campus. Soon after the attacks, we painted those benches with a patriotic theme. In front of my dorm, we had a bench with the NYPD logo on it. Others painted flags, and one painted the New York skyline with the words to a Christian praise chorus- "The day is dawning and I am just rising/I pray my hope won't fail, my hope." This particular bench was turned into a memorial in front of one of the classroom buildings. The date of 9/11 touched all American lives and calls all of us to not take anything for granted. The first year anniversary has come and gone, but there still is a long road to travel. I am now pursuing my graduate education in Library and Information Science. But I will always think back to that horrible day when, as a senior in college, I watched our nation change. May we grow stronger through our struggles, and may we learn that we can turn back to God, who never will change. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 began as just another typical day in my life as a high school junior at a rurual public school. I woke up late, dragged myself out of bed, and hurried off to school barely sneaking into class before the second bell. Looking back, the discussion in my first period English class was very prophetic, chilling almost. As we were discussing Hemingway's novel, "A Farewell to Arms", the subject of war was aroused and how America had become alienated from it. As my class discussed this alienation and apathy toward war and the world, my teacher spoke a sentence that I will never forget. Mrs. Gilgoff said, "It would take a war to wake America up." These words escaped her mouth just thiry minutes before the first plane hit the World Trade Towers. I was in my second period class, Calculus, working on a problem when a fellow student, Al Anzivine ran into our classroom and ordered us to turn on the television in a frantic, yet scared voice. Our teacher, a bit confused, did as he told her, although with a bit of annoyance for the distruption of our class. Immediately I watched with my peers the instant replays of the first plane hitting the tower and listened intentively to the newsbroadcaster, who looked just as confused and perturbed as I felt. Confusion was a key emotion for me that day. I saw both towers hit and collapse with my own eyes, yet neither seemed real. I watched as the section of the Pentagon burned, yet felt disassociated from it all. I felt numb. It couldn't be real, I thought. My eyes were decieving me, playing a very cruel trick. This is America- home of the free. Things like this don't happen here...to innocent people...on our soil. The towers crumbing down and planes crashing suicidely to their deaths was something I watched in action movies or heard about on the international portion of the evening news. Never in my life (nor did any other American) think that a tragic event such as this could or ever would happen here on our own soil. We thought we were invinsible, indestructible, untouchable. We were remarkably wrong. September 11th has given a new meaning to my values and priorities in life. My family has become more important to me and spending quality time with them has overtaken the time I would have (in the past) watched television. I've learned to value friends more and the precious time that we have to share. September 11th has reinforced the fact that we're all mortal and we have no guaruntee on life and the longevity of it. I cannot let each day just pass me by as an observer. I want to take part, be active, make a difference each day I live and breathe. September 11th was a wake up call to a sleeping giant. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I returned home from taking my 5 year old to school and laid on the couch to try and get some rest when the phone rang. It was my mother (she was calling from Maryland about 60 miles south of DC)an she said are you watching tv, I said no why? Turn it on she said a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. We stayed on the phone on the line with each other watching in horror we watched the second plane hit and then it was not an accident but an act of terror we were being attacked. We were still on the line when the third plane hit the Pentagon, the very building that my father Marvin Roger Woods works in. I let her go so she could try and get a hold of him. She could not. I called my husbands office and got an urgent message sent to him. He was at a seminar. He phoned me back and I told him we could not find my father. He had just finished doing some communication work in my fathers office so he still had the blueprints. He said he would go to his office and get them and come home. As soon as he arrived and we were able to located where the plane had crashed, he just looked up at me I knew it was not good. The plane had crashed right through my fathers office there was no way he could have survied. We got the news that he was offically unaccounted for at 1:30 in the morning and by 2 am we were on our way to Maryland. We laid my father to rest in Arlington Cemetary in a spot that is in the shadow of the wall that was hit on October 23, 2001. It has been a year of ups and downs. I still can not seem to heal its very hard being without him. But, Everyday I thank god because my husband was scheduled to be in my fathers office that day but due to eye surgery his travel schedule was pushed back a week. He blurted out that while in the office signing in he saw that a plane had hit the World Trade Center Building in NYC. I can be honest, I didn't really know anything about the WTC buildings. At first we all thought it was some sort of accident but then as we stood watching, the second plane hit and it was unbelievable. I was scared and uncertain. I remember thw whole day my friends and I were quiet. We were all uncertain of our futures, as well as our country's future. I was so excited to graduate and go to college and pursue my dream to be a nurse and now I wondered would it ever come true, would there be a war and a draft that might take my then boyfriend(now husband) and my brother overseas. Then I saw classmates who were histerical because they had family in NYC. I always thought about how my grandparents, parents even, had gone through wars and scary things and never did I imagine that I would have something like this happen in my time. Never did I think I would be able to look at my children's history book someday and see an event I can rememeber so vivdily like I will 9/11/06. Tell us your story: It was 11pm on Tuesday Sep 11, I was asleep and my husband stayed up to watch a bit of tv, he got a phone call from a friend to tell us to watch the tv. At 2am Michael decided to wake me up, he said I had to watch the tv and so I got up and was glued to the tv for 2 days and hardly slept. I was in shock and never left the house. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I got a call from my daughter, "A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center"! Could it be a terrible accident? Another call a second plane has crashed--we are at war! A third call a plane has crashed into the Pentagon and shortly after the towers have fallen. I need to be with my family. My second daughter, a student at the school where I work and a member of MA 2 DMAT's an emergency medical assistance team, comes to see me to tell me the team has been activated and she and my husband will leave that night. I rush home with her to buy her boots and supplies for their deployment. My two daughters, son and son in law and husband leave to load up the truck that will carry the supplies they take to New York. I sit in front of the television watching the horror of the day unfold. Almost midnight my husband comes home for his uniforms kisses me goodbye and leaves, God protect them and let them help as many people as they can. Tell us your story: On September 10 2001 9:25 am I gave birth to a big healthy baby boy named Adrian Benjamin Alvarado the next day Sept 11 2001 the doctor had walked in to check on us I was watching the news and their was a breaking news alert they showed the first tower with smoke the doctor and i could not believe it the first thing that i did was call my family and my 4 year old son justin to make shure they were ok as soon as i hanged up the next plane crashed into the next tower right before my very eyes i remember hugging my son tight and crying my eyes out for the next two month every day i had tears i could not believe that so many lives were gone so fast and for no reason not a day goes by with out us remembering that day and i will never forget it it was the day after my sons birth and the day of my fathers birth day today a year after i got up at 5:30am and started to watch the 9/11 broadcast and a the same time that the fist tower was hit my heart started to hurt and i started to cry it was like if it was today when it happend my heart goes out to every one that gave theirs lives and the families and the children that their lives changed that day. We will never forget you nor that day.
