A friend of mine walked in and said that a plane had hit the world trade center, my teacher who was the former assistant football coach, didn't believe him and decided to make a bet. He said that he would turn on the television, and if the student was wrong he owed the teacher ten push ups, and if the student was right he would do ten pushups. Unfortunately the student was wrong. Then we spent the period watching the news, and we witnessed, the second tower, the pentagon, and the pennsylvania tragesy's. The rest of the day was surreal, things seemed less important, and they still do today. September 11th taught me to have fun in life and to live in the moment. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in my condo in Utah and I was getting ready to go to school. I was a senior at Brigham Young University and was not totally acclamated to the United States culture as I had recently returned from a mission in Santiago Chile where I had lived for a year and a half. Things that are commonplace to normal Americans were still very much a luxury to me. My friend called me and alerted me to the intensity of the news at which time I moved to the television where I could see the events. As a political science major, a plethora of events rushed to mind but I remember the one thing that permeated my being is that there must be a reason. I went to my first class of the morning, Constitutional Law. My professor was there but seemed to be too dumbstruck to teach us. He said the most profound thing that I could have imagined him say. He said "I am a political scientist but I can not imagine myself teaching the theory behind politics when history is making something even the finest political minds could not have predicted." I went to a commons area at the university where thousands of students stood in an erie silence as they watched and listened to the news. I listened as classmates of mine called home to DC or virginia, just getting the news and hoping all was well and I realized how grateful I was that I live in a nation where family still means something, where we really could stand shoulder to shoulder, and where I had the religious freedom to attend a christian university where we are still allowed to say one nation under God. I know that as long as we maintain that brotherhood that inspired men wrote into our constitution, we will maintain the strength that only love and unity can bring to this nation. I know this because I have lived abroad and I have seen what happens when brotherly love ceases. I am thankful that God was brought so much more prominently into our hearts and lives as a nation. I was so upset that me and my freinds got on our hands and knees and prayed that everyone in the school and in the crashes would be ok. We thought there was no one hurt but we were wrong there was someone hurt many people were hurt and even killed. I'm not sure why I'm writing this but I feel I should at least contribute something to this archive. Here is my story, then: At the time, I worked for Starbucks Coffee. I recall driving into work with the windows down and the music blasting on that day. I was in on the shift at 6:30. Our morning rush came in on schedule with all our regulars and their smiling (yet groggy) faces. The rush, which was unusually short for this day, ended at around 8:45. Then a big group of regulars (retirees) came in and sat down outside with their drinks. The attitude of everyone was pretty upbeat that day because of the gorgeous weather. I don't recall the exact time, but someone I had never seen before, and not since, came in and told us "A plane hit the world trade center" rather non-chalantly. I remember pouring his coffee and thinking about the plane that crashed into the Empire State Building back in the 40's (I had seen something about it on the History Channel once and it stuck in my head because of how horrific it was). I remarked about it and went back about the bussiness. For a few minutes. Someone else came in, wild-eyed, and asked if we knew what was going on. We told the person we'd heard and then they told us about the second plane. My manager went to the back and grabbed a small blue radio. We set it up next to the bar and huddled around it. After 9:45, our store ground to a halt... nobody was able to function on any level. I went outside to smoke. The retirees that sit out front asked me what was wrong. Appearently no one had told them. One, a Korean War vet, and a few others were World War II vets, were openly angry about it and they all started talking as I retreated to my car and it's radio. I sat down and listened. It's not like you had to search for a station. It was everywhere on the radios. I smoked and listened, my cigarette shaking in my hands. I wasn't sure if it was from anger, fear, or what. And then the first tower came tumbling down. I could phsycially feel something change about the parking lot I sat in on that day. The clouds passing by in the blue sky... I got out my car and a lady I'd never met before came running up to me and asked me if I thought she should pick up her child from elementary school. I stammered, not sure what to say. I eventually told her to leave the child at school because I wasn't sure what to tell her. When I came back inside, the store was totally desolate except for a few State Dept. exployees who were talking about it at the counter. I don't quite remember when we heard that the Pentagon had been hit. There were all sorts of things being said on the radio and we only got snippets of it due to bad reception. But it was pretty appearent that it was bad. Real bad. Eventually, this lone straggler came walking in in his Navy uniform, all smiles. He was a semi-regular so we all knew him. He came up and says "Why so glum? What's wrong?" We all looked at him, incredulous. "Haven't you heard the radio??" "No. I have a CD player in my car. Why?" "You don't know?!" "No! What's going on?? I woke up late for work and decided to sleep-in!" "The Pentagon and World Trade Centers have been hit!" "Hit?! With what?" "Someone crashed airliners into them." He turned and ran out the door, yelling "I work at the Pentagon!" I later found out he had been spared due to his inability to set his alarm clock correctly. At 11:45 our store got a call from the district manager. To protect their employees, Seattle was shutting down every store from Georgia to Boston. So we began cleaning half-heartedly and walked out. The first thing I heard was a jet engine and I looked into the sky expecting to see fear embodied by a passnger jet. Instead I saw a pair of USAF F-16C's blasting East towards DC. I remember thinking that I had never felt so helpless in my whole life. I drove to my friend Chris' house. He and I had been part of a USAF Search and Rescue unit called the Civil Air Patrol. We were put on alert and told to stay close to the phone. There, I saw my first televised images of the the hell was happening to my country. I was enaraged just from watching TV. That was another new thing for me. I sat for a long time before my mom called me and we confirmed we were okay. I spent the rest of the day at that house waiting for an alert messege. I will remember that day until I die. And since that day, I have looked to the sky every time I heard a plane fly over. The silence of the skies (the FAA grounded all aircraft) for the following two days was almost like a 48 hour memorial service. God be with all the families who were directly effected by that day. While driving back to work, I heard on the radio that a plane had hit the world trade center. I assumed it was a small private plane that had lost control. By the time I arrived back at work, word was out that it was a commercial plane that had hit. My coworkers and I were scrambling to the computers to see who could log on first to the internet for more information. One of my friends turned on his radio. We sat huddled around the radio waiting for the computer to show details of the events. Then we heard a second plane crashed into the other tower in New York, then moments later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon, then a while later a plane crashed in Pennsylvania. It felt like the world had gone crazy and this was the end. I remember seeing the images on the computer of the crash of the twin towers and crying for those poor people and their families. It was a very scary feeling - like something unknown was attacking, and we couldn't stop it. I feared for my family. My two boys were at school, and my husband had gone to the grocery store with our daughter. I was frantic when I couldn't get him on the phone. I called my sister, no answer (she was at the same grocery store as my husband) - both totally unaware of what had happened. I then tried my parents - no answer. They were out for the day. I remember feeling very paniced and couldn't wait to leave work. We watched in horror as the twin towers can crashing down and the images of the people running for their lives. It was very scary. When I did go home that day after finally talking to my family members, I hugged my kids so tight I never wanted to let go. My son, who was in 6th grade, came home and fell apart in my arms crying. He was so scared. My husband and I reassured him that things were under control. My husband then had to go to work. My son didn't want him to go. He was afraid that if we had to evacuate, we'd lose dad. I assured him we would wait for him or meet him at a designated point. His fears were never really calmed until we made plans for an evacuation and I packed a bag full of the things we would need to take with us. We live in Windsor Locks, Connecticut right near Bradley International Airport. It was very eery and too quiet that night as all planes were grounded. We sat outside with our neighbors and lit candles, raised our flags, and prayed. I'll never forget that day. The day the world changed and Americans reunited as one. We turned it on just in time to see the second plane hit. A big gasp fell across the room. I don't think we have been that silent in years. What was happening? Was there going to be more planes crashing in different places? Were we going to die? So many questions ran through my mind. We watch the TV for about 20 minutes then had to go to our next class. This was the time of the day that i always met my mom in the hallway. I ran down to wait for her just to see her reaction (nothing is ever really that bad unless your parents are upset too). She had tears in her eyes as she grabbed me. I've never been held that close. We stood there and talked for a few minutes about it and then had to go to class. The whole school watched it for the rest of the day. I remember driving home and thinking how weird it looked outside. It would never be the same again. We were no longer safe. As soon as my dad got home that night, our family circled up and we prayed together. It seemed that was the most important thing to do. Weeks went on and every night we would sit in the living room and watch the news. Slowly things started dieing down and we didn't think of it as much anymore. Even today no one really talks to the kids about it. Its kind of like they are trying to hide it or something. I feel it should be something that we talk about to our children everyday and make them understand what happened. That someone came into our country and tried to take away our Freedom and Security. Little did I know that actually saved two other of my loved ones lives. I was only 10 when the day came. My dad ( who works for the Port Authority and visits the Trade Center often)took the day off from work, to go to his cousin's funeral.Besides that, it was a very normal day. My brother and I walked to school together as always (he was only 8), not to mention it was a really gorgeous day. It was sunny, and warm. School had only started a week ago, so it wasn't such a pleasant thing to start off the year.The first clue that something was wrong, was that one of the teachers were crying. Second thing was one by one, people were going home. Third thing, is that we weren't able to go to outside for recess. That's when I knew something wasn't right. I lived right across the bay from the towers, so as we were walking to gym class we saw thick, black smoke through the window.It was so bad, it looked like a plane crashed right across the street from the school.I was still clueless about what was going on. All I heard were rumors about a plane crash.The teachers weren't allowed to tell us what was going on, but they were all informed. While I was at gym class, there was an announcement made that all students who usually go home for lunch, wouldn't be allowed to, and to report to the auditorium so they could find out why. That started to make me really nervous. Luckily someone in my class went home for lunch, so when he got back,I immediatley asked him what was going on. He so casually said that a plane crashed into The World Trade Center. I started to cry right after he told me, because my aunt and uncle work there, and practically my whole family worked for the Port Authority and vist the towers often. I was crying so much that a girl in my class pulled me out and tried to calm me down, and told me that everything was going to be okay. That kept me relieved, until I got to lunch.There were people crying everywhere,and kids at my table kept going home.I started crying again, and a teacher pulled me out, and took me to the nurse's office. She also told me that everything was going to be okay, and that we were safe in school. For the rest of the day at school, I felt alittle better. After lunch there were about 9 students left out of a 22 student class. We didin't do much for the rest of our time there. Our teacher just allowed us to talk and relax.At about an hour before school is supposed to get out, a teacher came and told us that all our guardians had been contacted, and we have to head to the auditorium. I was happy to go there, because I knew I'd see my younger brother. That would make me more relaxed to see that he was alright. I explained to him what was going on, and he luckily wasn't too upset, and said that his teacher let his class know about it, because she got a call on her cell phone about it, before the school even notified her. The principal then announced that there would be no school the following day. Everyone there was cheering, but it made me kind of worried. All my worries went away, when I saw my baby-sitter walk through the door. My brother and I ran out, but we didn't ask questions until we got into the car.Then I asked for the whole story. He told us everything, and that made me feel really good to know the whole truth, since there had been so many rumors going on at school. He told us about the terrorists and everything.That kind of scared me alittle, but I was glad to know the truth. I had a feeling they wouldn't take so much precaution if it was just an accidental plane crash. The thing that upsetted me the most was that he told me the buildings collapsed, and were gone!I didn't ask him if he knew about my family, because I'd rather hear it straight from my mom or dad. Once I got home I said hi to his wife, and ran to the phone to call my mom. My brother tried first, but they got disconnected. Then I tried, and I got through. It was so relieving to hear her voice. I asked her about my aunt, uncle, and anyone who might have been there. She said Thank God everybody was alright. They all went to the funeral for the cousin. I was so relieved, I skipped through the house and told everybody, but everybody already knew. Then I asked about my dad, and she said he was stuck in Staten Island since the Bayonne Bridge was closed, but he was with my aunt and grandma. As long as he was safee I was okay. We were with the baby-sitters at their house until around 7:30, and then my dad came to pick us up. Immediatley my brother and I ran to go give him a hug. We were so happy to see him. Then we went home, and I stood outside with some friends just starring at the smoke. My mom didn't get home until around 9:30. We were so happy to see her. We went to give her hugs too. It was hard to go to sleep at night, just thinking that this happened just a few miles away from us, and that my parents had to go back to work the next day! I don't think they slept all night. I think they spent it watching the news. All I heard them say was, " Wait until we find out who didn't make it". The next day, my parents dropped us off at the baby-sitter's house. Since we had no school, we spent the day watching the news, and reading the newspaper. There was not one page in there that wasn't about the events the previous day. This was going on world wide. It was only the next day I found out that The Pentagon was hit, and there was a crash in Penn. as well. That night my parents were just crying at all their friends they found out had died. I even knew some of them. The next few days were spent with family telling their stories about what happned to them. It was interesting to find out where they all were. The funny thing is that, I was so upset that my dad's cousin died, but his death wounded up saving some of my family's lives. I guess everything DOES happen for a reason. So I guess eventually, we'll find out why this happned. For know, all we can do is trust God, and think about that terrible day. Tell us your story: I turned on the tv that morning and had on Channel 2, our local Atlanta ABC affiliate, and Charles Gibson was mentioning that a plane flew into one of the Twin Towers. A minute later, another plane hit. I saw it with my own eyes, but thought they were doing a recreation of the first plane hitting. Growing up in NYC and having family and friends in the city that day made me nervous and sad, shocked and angry all at once. My cousin was a soon to be retiring NYPD cop who was in court that morning (a block or two away). He saw the devastation with his own eyes and helped out as best he could. He survived thankfully, but he knew several people who didn't make it and my uncle who was a Fire Chief in the NYPD knew a lot of his fellow brothers that died. My office was in the media center of the elementary school. I received a phone call from a friend that worked at a local branch of the national government agency telling me that a plane had just crashed into the WTC. I immediately turned on CNN. Seconds later, I remember seeing the other plane crash into the second tower. All I remember is thinking that I wanted to pick my son up from daycare and hold him in my arms. I wanted to speak to my best friend and make sure he was alright. I wanted to call my mom to tell her that I loved her. No traffic noise on Pacific Coast Highway. No lawnmowers, no leaf blowers. Tell us your story: 911 Day For many, like myself, especially living in Manhattan, the day was horrendous, shocking, unimaginable and I cried a lot inside (and out). It is a day to stamp onto history, in infamy, regardless of one?s politics or perspective. Personally, it was one of the hardest days emotionally I?ve had to live through? I am not afraid to say I am traumatized. We?re OK. Physically and health-wise, we are fine. At the time, Joanne was at work at her client?s location, and I was home sleeping- she called moments later after the first plane hit to wake me, by the time I got up, both towers of the World Trade were lit up? Watching it unfold on CNN digital cable TV and in a real live view from our high-rise apartment. (The TV is right next to the window)- I was mesmerized, surfing the news and simultaneously using my high-powered binoculars: seeing it actually happening, burning , it was totally overwhelming, almost unbelievable, looking right at it in a real time viewpoint, in real life - sirens screaming one after another all hours, and on CNN live, animated, mediated on the screen- my urban space became the global stage- instant news from a place of the current crisis international ? Joanne?s vendor company was located in the WTC. (It?s weird to say "was" being that it was still existing only hours ago.) If you remember, I sent out some attachments with photos of July 4th fireworks last year, taken from the 83rd floor. In the past, we have spent plenty of time around the immediate area ("ground zero"), shopping in the WTC mall and shops outside and eating at favorite restaurants there and close by. Her company, IQ Financial, the maker of the bank loan administration software that Joanne implements for their customers, is one of the hundreds of companies located there. She has known many of her friends and associates from that office, for years, even before moving to NYC. Joanne had an office in the WTC building #2 last year, and could have gone to work for the company further as an employee, had she not signed directly with her client French bank. She still had been working on a consistent basis with many of the people there, and had been in contact socially with several, considering a few her very good friends. We have gone out together, eating, drinking with them and even have been to the Jets football games together. When Joanne got home she spent some time on the phone, trying to get word about her friends- these people are our good friends? and they have not been heard from. It is ironic and upsetting for me to think that the dedicated workers were the ones that went back up. It?s the good ones that always get the shaft. They all die young. We?re hoping for some word tomorrow- The phone?s been ringing off the hook? The missing people?s family members are going crazy? For myself, I was wide awake upon opening the shades and seeing the fires topping the buildings, surreal smudges of soot, distinct flames in the four mile distance- the Twin Towers were like candles, incense sticks starting to burn down. It didn?t occur to me the gravity of the situation at first- I thought, maybe they were small prop planes and they?d eventually put out the fire, with only a few injured or killed- no big deal. But this was. I took a bunch of pictures, as I watched the TV coverage zoomed in on the World Trade Center. And when the horror escalated, an explosion of TV media coverage; interviews and reportage on-the-scene; repeating the video clips over and over- I started to breath harder and my heart started feeling heavy. As the South Tower collapsed, my heart sunk, and I would have dropped to the floor if the couch were not right at my knees. All I could think of was Joanne?s former office people- our friends and 10,000 others! It was as if my aura was being depleted- swept along by the rise thousands of souls into the cloud of smoke. When the second tower fell, I was already drenched in tears- devastated by the thought of buried masses and in anguish made more terrible by familiarity making personal the place? and the faces? Thousands of lives and deaths- several people said as they were evacuating, climbing down the stairs, the firefighters were making their way up, shortly afterwards, only minutes after the people get out- the tower collapsed? Thousands of stories- One of Joanne?s friends- a British co-worker of Joanne?s, called his wife on his cell phone from the stairwell saying he couldn?t get out of the building because the levels below were too hot- in effect he had a chance to say good-bye- he had three kids? Another one of Joanne?s friends- leaving the building, she got down the many levels, continued down flights of stairs, got below the levels when and where the 2nd plane hit, and while feeling the rumbling, shaking of the building, kept going, calmly proceeding, left the building- they were walking away, when their tower collapsed, and the air became thick with dust and smoke, and everything turned pitch black - it was then that she became afraid and thought she was going to die! She was talking to Joanne on the phone this evening and said she is in shock- terrified, afraid to think about going out again and can?t leave the clutches of her husband?s arms? So, Joanne and I hugged a lot and said, as we always do, that we are so lucky to have each other? The sun then set on the once majestic buildings of the skyline, some now only debris and rubble, and overhead the light of day changed to black, like enough was enough, there was nothing left, our spirit was all spent? Late night, the cooler atmosphere disguised the horrible scene, the hot acrid smoke over lower Manhattan- where if ever after that dissipates; heaven will claim a part of it? The politicians tell us we will be strong and are going to be fine. But, I have no resolve; I have no strength left- I am a dependent individual and have look to the new global media for a message; I depend on the stratosphere to filter the air I breathe and look to the world-wide state of affairs to satisfy my questioning, maybe in this way I can work out the pain and disgust, and gain a little strength to hang on- I?m staying tuned to CNN- a division of AOL/ Time-Warner? AOL/Time Warner Center is under construction 1 short block from our hi-rise residential building at the southwest corner of Central Park. At the moment it is at 5-6 floors high. It will be a large complex and house Jazz at Lincoln Center, restaurants, shopping mall, office space, and condos- starting at $5mil. Due to rise to 50+ levels and to be completed in 2003, it will be massive Twin Towers? It may be a long time before people on earth will be fine. My cat, of 11 years, had died the previous day of a brain tumor, and I was not sleeping well. So I was up, and moving around when I heard my mothers' voice... and realized that something horrible had happened. I ran to the living room to watch the TV, and was shocked from head to toe, at what the newsmen/women were reporting. The World Trade Center.... was under attack??? I couldnt believe my eyes when, as I watched the skyline, they saw another plane approaching.. and as the world exploded for millions... I cried. I shook. I felt like chicken little, that the sky was falling, and that the darkest day I had ever thought to see, had arrived. I have felt for all those who did have loved ones, friends or family. My nephew is a fireman, and I a health care worker... and I know, had we been able to be there.. he and I both would have been in the middle of it, and have nothing but respect, admiration, and total understanding of those who gave their all for their fellow coworkers, friends, and family members. At the time I was working for the Manchester School District. The previous day we had had an incident with a little boy who was in a wheel chair. His chair had tipped over while we were outside. The next day, Sept. 11, one of the other teachers came in and asked us if we heard what had happened. The teacher that I worked with and I automatically thought that the parents of this child was in the office and wanted to see us. We assumed they were very angry with us but the teacher that had come to our room told us, no the towers in NYC had been hit. We were both stunned. Personally I didn't know anyone who was in any of the planes or any of the buildings but just having this happen to our "neighbors" was very sad.
