We awoke in the morning and began packing for our flight. Not long after we were up we heard on the television of the hit on the World Trade Centers. The thought that we could have been in the air that day was scary. I had tried to book a flight to leave early that morning but was unable to get one. I feel that God was telling me that it wasn't our time to go. We spent five extra days in Texas and when we did get to leave it was the longest flight of our lives. Everyone that boarded the plane you wondered, are they safe to be on my flight? Is something else going to happen? Now one year later it is such a great feeling to see that our country is still standing together and still remembering that terrible day. We are ONE NATION UNDER GOD and I hope that the United States always remembers September 11th, 2001. The day didn?t exactly start out normal because I woke up sick that morning and wasn?t going to go to school, but I decided to go anyways. I first heard from one of my friend s that two planes had crashed in to the New York City World Trade Towers. In gym class, we watched video clips and heard stories of the plane crashes. Then a few seconds later we heard about a plane hitting the Pentagon. Just watching the video clips made me feel even sicker than I already did. It was so weird seeing it happen. It was like I was there with it just watching and not being able to stop it, or it was some crazy movie that wasn?t real. Later we heard about the fourth crashing of a plane into the ground not too far away from Pittsburg Pennsylvania. When they said that the only thing that the terrorists had were box cutters and exacto knives it was almost like a joke. All of the people on three of the planes just couldn?t stop the terrorists. But then again if I was on that plane I would have been so scared I couldn?t move, let alone try to stop them. After they showed the clips a few more times they announced that Niagara Falls Air Force Base was on alert. The military personnel their had to go home and pack there bags then go straight back to work, because they were going some where top secret. That hit me hard and my eyes started to tear up because my Dad works at the base and he was going somewhere that I had no clue where he would be. I wouldn?t get to say bye to him, and I would have no clue if he was safe or not. That ended up being wrong though but I didn?t know that until I got home after school. My family and I ate dinner while watching the news, which is something our family never does. Afterwards my Dad told us all of the specifics as we watched the news again but he didn?t know much more than the news people did. I have to say that this terrorist attack definitely changed many individuals, families, friendships, and all of America. I want to say sorry to all of those who lost family and friends in this terrorist attack. Also a big thank you to God for keeping my family safe throughout this whole thing. I don?t think that all of the terrorist attacks are dome being planned, but I now have faith that we will be safe. Also I don?t think if there is another one it will be as big of a tragedy either. One thing I can say is that this terrorist attack has impacted America greatly. I think that one of its long term affects is that we grew closer as a nation. And I think we will always be! America watched in shock as the planes hit the WTC and the Pentagon. America retaliated, but without satisfying it?s citizen?s insecurities. Those insecurities included safety, opinions, and the future generations. During this period, not many things were certain, but one thing was; this day was never to be forgotten. A subject that came to mind after the death of thousands was the safety of my family. I started realizing how important my family was and how much I love them. I appreciated them more for how much they care about me. Although my family wasn?t effected directly, I realize d how much they meant to me. America?s attitude towards life was also changed by the attacks. People?s approach to common aspects of life as differed from before the tragedy. The lost of lives led to the lost of security and a sense of uncertainty. Some people?s opinions on the Middle East have also changed. Although we know the chances of being attacks are slim, we are still anxious when it comes to boarding plans or visiting big cities. President Bush asked us to return to our normal lives, but I do not think the disaster of 9/11 will ever be forgotten. I have heard many stories about how adults have a hard time dealing with 9/11, but it is even harder for the younger generation to cope with this tragedy. The world is already confusing to kids with the violence and drugs, but this event might be too much for them to comprehend. Major events such as this could teach the children of tomorrow to hate and discriminate. This is why I think schools should include this as a part of the material to properly inform the kids on the attack. Terrorism has definitely taken its toll on the United States. It has affected the ordinary things such as caring for loved ones and perspectives on things that never came to mind before. Ask anyone and they?ll tell you 9/11 is a dark day, but in a different perspective, you will realize that this event has brought the country together. It also made us appreciate our firefighters and policeman more. So, in conclusion, 9/11 is no doubt a sad day, but we should learn from our mistakes and move on to a newer and better tomorrow. I arrived at my office just in time to get to a conference room where several employees stood in disbelief at what had just happened. And then the 2nd plane hit! I was born and grew up in a small mid-New Jersey town and moved away before the trade center towers were built, but I followed their progress with great interest. My husband, who had never been to NYC before, and I visited the City a few yrs ago and had a drink at the WTC (my husband had to borrow a jacket since he didn't have one with him that day; he's short and the jacket sleeves were about 8" too long... but the view was great!). A year later I still can't believe that this terribe assault took place and I still cry when faced with sstories, etc about the event and it's ramifications... With all it's problems, I've always loved the City; it's a symbol of my beloved country to me. I pray that nothing even remotely similar to this ever happens again here in the USA. The people of the world, especially those who are leaders or who wield great influence, need to come to the understanding that all people need the same things to flourish. The first accounts were sketchy and I thought that the incident was that a helicopter had crash landed on the helipad at the White House. I remember it being a bad day to start off-I had come in late because I wasn't feeling well, but still decided to go to school nonetheless. I walked straight into my Spanish class where my teacher greeted me with a smile, and later on while the rest of the class was working she came over and gave me a hug-I guess she could tell that I wasn't feeling well. I was suddenly filled with an intolerable hatred. I couldn't believe that someone could have such disregard for human life. What would motivate these people to murder so many people; leave so many children without parents, leave husbands and wives spouseless, and leave parents childless. I had never imagined such cruelty in my life, and now that I was face-to-face with it, I was overcome with extreme hatred. Then when I went home I talked with my family, and we watched the evening news. To see so many people who have endured so much tragedy rise above and dismiss their hate of these people and declare their love of their country and those around them astounded me. I was overcome with a sense of faith in the American people, and I knew that no matter what these people did, we would overcome. Tell us your story: At 14.45 hours local time, I heard my pregnant daughter-in-law cry out: Peter, they are bringing down the world and she became so pale and for a moment I feared for her unborn baby, she was so cramped. Together we wayched the second plane hit, awfull. They must have known what they did, nobody turns a plane the way they did in the last couple of seconds, just to make sure that the tower would crumble and fall. The rest of the day was awfull,more planes came down and the home-situation became worse, so my daughter in law and me made a long walk outside alongside the canal where the house was situated. Tell us your story: My co-worker, Andrea, arrive at work at approximately 7:50 a.m. (CDT) with the news that an airplane had crashed into one of the WTC Towers. We immediately went to our lunch room where we were joined by the rest of our co-workers and watched in horror and disbelief at the scene that was unfolding right before our very eyes. Being a very emotional person, I had to leave due to the many emotions that were traveling through my veins. When I learned of the second impact, I almost fell apart. How could anyone be so heartless as to do something like this? It took a while for me to regain my composure and then the third strike! What was going on in this wonderful country of ours? The scenes that were being televised were unbelievable. During the entire day tears welled up in my eyes and I would cry uncontrollably. At home that evening my family and I were afraid to turn off the television for fear we would miss the latest update, but watching it non-stop was becoming more upsetting. It was like living a bad dream. I had no idea what those directly involved in these strikes were feeling. The tragedy was too great to comprehend and one that I pray each day no one in the United States of America will ever have to go through again. All of this taught me a great lesson. In February of this year I was diagnosed with LCIS, a non-invasive form of breast cancer, but still a cancer. My first thought was for our children and grandchildren, and then the disbelief that this was happening to me. But when I brought myself back to reality, I realized that I was alive and could beat my diagnosis. After my six weeks of (5 days every week) radiation, I celebrated life for the very first time. Through everything that has happened in the last year, I have come to realize that having the cleanest car on the parking lot at work, the trendiest clothes or hair style, the cleanest house or the best looking yard on the block is not that important to me any longer. If people think these things are what make them truly happy, then I pity them. Look around at your family and friends. What would you do if in the blink of an eye just one of them was snatched from you and you would never see them again? This can happen, September 11, 2001 proved this to us. Hug your children, no matter what age they are, and tell them repeatedly how much you love them and spend some time with them just talking and getting to know each other. This means no TV, no DVD/VCR and no computer/video games of any kind. Sit and talk with your spouse and let them know how important they are to you and how much you love them. Visit your parents, brothers, sisters, etc. as much as you can. You never know when it will be your last chance. About 25 years ago in Sunday School I had a teacher who use to leave us with the following thought quite often - 'Things don't just happen, they're planned. They're planned by God's almighty hand.' Maybe September 11, 2001 was God's way of getting us all back on the right track and teaching us to appreciate what is really important in life. The price that was paid for this lesson is far greater than anything I would have ever wanted to happen. But each of the individuals that gave their lives so we may live are my heroes. This girl was like did you guys hear!?!?? im like no what,shes like the wtc's got hit by airplanes. were like ya ok whatever.then the bell rang and the pricible came on the intercom and told all teacher to turn to a certain cannel...they did..i could not belive what i was seeing..the world trade center was on fire and they said a airplane hit it! after about 10 minutes of watching it burn and people jump out,my teacher turned it off. now even 10 seconds after she turned it off the first tower colapesed. we turned it back on just in time to see the second one fall. it was crazy to acually think i see somthing so crazy happen. all the tv's in school were on(Classrooms,hallways,lunchroom,gym,office) they didnt turn off once. it was a very scary day and i cant belive someone would even try and do that to our country. Tell us your story: i was at work chatting and carrying on as usual in a days work when i received a phone call from my mother i spoke to her and she made me aware of the first attack and we were talking about this awful "accident" and all of those poor people on the plane and in the building. as i was talking to her and looking at the tv the second plane hit and immediately my stomach felt very sick and i knew this wasnt an accident that this was a very sick act of terrorism. i was stunned and hung the phone up and ran back in the kitchen at work and informed my coworkers and they didnt even believe me at first. we all ran out and began to stare at the tv and then the pentagon was struck and bush wanted all the planes down off the ground and then the pennsylvania plane was found out about and i remember just being so scared and feeling so helpless in wishing there was somthing-anything i could do. i can still remember a newscaster remarking about the people jumping out of the buildings that if they think its better by jumping imagine what it is like up there. i will never forget that day and the days that followed and i will never forget all the people that lost their lives and the families broken by this god bless all of you. I was still sleeping when the planes hit so I had no idea what happened so I was just doing what I usually do. When I got to school I found out what happened. I thought what had happened was horrible. In all of my classes we had discussions about it. At home on the television I saw the two planes crash in to the World Trade Center. It was a terrible sight. Those people at the World Trade Center were innocent and didn't deserve to die. My relative's relative's relative was at the World Trade Center when it happened. I agree with President Bush's decision to go on war on the terroists. The terroists should never have done what they did to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. They shouldn't get away with a crime like what they did to all the people and their families. I hope that the families of the dead will still live as happy as they did before. My response was that it had to be an accident that noone was evil enough to do something like that. But, to my shock when my husband called and told me that the second tower had been hit and then the pentagon I knew that it was the work of Satan and that he was running loose in America. I detected a sense of panick in the tone of her voice. I ask what was wrong and she told me that 1 "World Trade Center" was hit by one of our planes they were calling it an accident.At that time I was working on 40th & Park on the 34th Floor. I ran to the window that faced the Twin Tower's and couldn't believe my eye's there was this huge hole, it was dark and there was smoke, very black smoke. I ran back to my desk and tryed to get intouch with my sister who worked closer to the "World Trade Center". The lines were down I couldn't reach her. I was able to reach my mother. She was glued to the T.V. she informed me that the second tower was also hit. I couldn't see the second tower from the window at my job. But I did witness when the tower fell. There was this white smoke exiting the sides of the building. That was all I could see from that view, was the white smoke. I finally was able to reach my sister. She was screaming telling me that the first tower fell. I noticed how upset she was so I helped calm her down and intructed that she walk to my job as soon as possible. I also had to reach my sister in-law who worked down on 33rd & park. I went to her job and picked her up. Not to change the subject but this is the second most devastating tragedy that I ever expirenced. In 1992 my brother was killed in "Desert Storm". My sympathies and prayers go out to all the victim's and families in this traget time. Life go's on it will get easier to deal with. Suddenly, the phone rang. It was my teacher?s mom calling to tell her to turn on the T.V. because a plane had just hit one of the twin towers. To be honest, no one payed that much attention to the T.V. until the second twin tower was hit. We saw it live. Some kids cried and others, including myself, went silent. The news reporters were crying out "this is an act of war". It was the first time that I had seen broadcasters panic. Everyone in the class stood still and silent. Are eyes were glued to the television; no one spoke. When class ended, it was eerie to walk down the hallways because for the first time it was completely silent; everyone was stunned. A broadcast came over the radio and said that a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. I thought to myself, "Wow, major malfunction." I then made it to work. Entered and asked my friend if she had heard and she had not. I then turned on my radio which has t.v. stations. We were listening to Brian Gumble speaking with a woman working close to the towers. She said, "Oh My God, another plane has just hit the other tower." My friend and I looked at one another and knew it was no accident. Then reports of the Pentagan and Pennsylvania. We were then, at that point, very scared. Like many, I remember exactly what I was doing that day, what I was wearing, the way I wore my hair, the way the sky looked, everything. I will always remember. We work very close to Baltimore/Washington International Airport. The silence of no planes coming in or going out was deafening. We were able to leave work early that day. On my way home I made phone calls to my mom and dad and began to cry trying to understand why anyone would do something like this. I picked up my children and hugged them tight and cried even more. Being only 3 1/2 and the other 11 months, they did not understand what was going on. And for that I am glad. Where do you begin to explain to a child what happened and have them understand why. I looked at my daughter and son last night as they slept, the eve of September 11th, 2002 and wished that their generation will never, ever have to experience anything like this. I never in my wildest dreams ever thought I would in my lifetime. If one good thing emerged from all of this it is that the United States came together as one. The way it should be. Everyone looked at everyone the same. It did not matter if you were short/tall, rich/poor, black/white, etc. Everyone renewed their patriotism that day and it still shines. Let it never be extinguished. Our freedom and patriotism should burn brightly forever as a nation that will always, from that day, be different. Tell us your story: It was just about 8:50 A.M. when my daughter and I pulled into the drive thru at a donut shop - something we did religiously every morning before school. While waiting to pull forward, I turned on the radio and that's when I heard the DJ reporting about a plane that had struck one of the towers in New York City. It did not register at first the magnitude of the incident until she said that it appeared to be atleast a 737, maybe even a 757. Immediately, I turned the station to see if this was just a random report or if it indeed carried some weight. I was stunned to hear that just about any station I could tune into was broadcasting on the same information. It was about this time that I returned to the original station and it was then that the DJ cried out , "My GOD! Another plane has just stuck the second tower!" My daughter looked at me with question and concern and asked,"Daddy, did those people die?" - she was only 6 at the time. I soon realized that evryones world had changed forever in some form or fashion. My wife called me on the cell phone in tears presumeably in shock of what just occurred. I supppose that being prior military memebers ourselves, we seemed to take it a little harder than others around us. I find myself scanning images in my head of news footage, interviews and photos of the worst possible shots and sometimes wonder what I would have done, - what could I have done? It saddens me the worst to think of those that were clinging to the outsides of the building as it was engulfed in horendous flames. I only find comfort in the explanation that I have created myself for those who chose to leap hand in hand. It is this - I believe that as they peered over the ledges, what they saw was not hundreds of feet of distance and smoke, but a softness of light accompanied by angels and the hands of God. Of all the individuals that were photographed falling or leaping, the body motions appeared to be calm and relaxed. As hard as it is to think of this as I write, I find comfort and ease with this vision. These days, I find myself in silence a little more than before, perhaps alot more reflectful of things past and things that matter most in life.
