I was in the training class for force protection against terrorism. Then one of the office personal rushed in and yelled that a plane just hit the first tower. Then I watched the second plane hit. Tell us your story: It was early morning on September 11, 2001 I was in my first period class at Tuskawilla Middle School we turned the tv on to see the morning announcements and all of a sudden we saw on CNN that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by an airplane and that it was not confirmed what type of plane hit or what actually happened. The bell ring for the next period and I was in American History we told our teacher what happened and he was struck with awe he didnt know what to do or say. Then we turned the tv on and saw that another plane had struck the other tower. My classmates and I all knew that this was no accident and that someone deliberately flew those planes into those towers. All of us were freaked out and then the power went out in our school, then we were all totally scared. We didnt know what to expect we thought that there was going to be an attack on our school everyone was scared for their lives. Soon after that we learned that the Pentagon was hit which was another shock. Our American History teacher said that his sister was somewhere in Washington, D.C. and so he was very worried. After that class my step dad came and picked me up so I didnt have to be at school any longer, we then watched tv all day and got updated information on fox news. It was so odd watching all this I thought that it was all just a dream and it wasnt real. That I was maybe just dreaming this all up and I should wake up sometime sooner or later. It was something that was so odd and strange that I had a feeling of that everything around was an illusion. From then on I've been very cautious on what I see and do. I havent been on an airplane since September 11th. I dont have a fear of flying or anything. But I know if someone hijacked a plane that I was on I would go after that hijacker with everything I have. As I see it you got nothing to lose in a hijacked plane. Your going to die either way, so why not die being a hero than rather die being a coward. This is my point of view and I'm sure many people would agree with it. Victims and families of the victims of September 11th have not left my thoughts since that day, I have deep sympathy for them and for the people of each country that those terrorists harbour in, because we all know that President Bush will see that they are not living while he is in office. Tell us your story: I was at the office getting ready to start work for the day as a telemarketer when my boss called and told me to turn on the news, "that a plane had just flown into the world trade center. Then while I was putting on the news the report came in about the other WTC plane hitting and the report that thde pentagon had also been hit. The shock and horror began at that time and just increased by the moment throughout the day. As I came out of the bathroom, my wife called me from work to tell me a plane had hit the Twin Towers. I had thought it was only a small private plane, so I got a cup of coffee in my NYC skyline mug I purchased when I was in the city last and turned the TV on. I tuned in just in time to see the second plane slam into the tower. All I could do for what seemed like 30 min. was stand there and watch. I grew up in Lincoln Park, NJ, which is a suburb of NYC, and as a child watched all my friend's parents walk past my house to the train station in business suits and sneakers, carrying their dress shoes and breif cases, to catch the train to the city. I moved to michigan in my teens with my family, and met my wife here, but I always thought of NY/NJ as my home. After the shock of what was going on passed some, it dawned on me that many of my friends and relatives work and live in lower Manhattan. I first called my wife back, and pleaded with her to stay in her office all day, then come straight home, thinking that WW3 had just begun, then I called my mom, who lives near me in MI, to see if she has heard from anyone, which she hadn't. I then began to try calling everyone in NY, and my family in florida to see if anyone had heard anything, all the while watching TV. I remember speaking to my mom on the phone while standing outside, around noon or so. The aircraft all around America were supposed to be grounded by that point, and to my horror, I looked up and saw a large jet at a very high altitude flying south from Canada. I panicked!! Finally, while it was still in my sight, it turned back north and proceeded back towards Canada. The rest of that day and the next few where like a blur. The people of Michigan were understandably upset and shocked, but not nearly as much as I was, which left me felling sort of isolated. I work in The hospital in Lansing, and fortunatly for me, a nurse from the Bronx had started on my unit a few months before, so I had someone who understood and could grieve with. About a week after, we both found we had lost no family members, but many friends between us. I had an aunt who was in the subway station when the first tower was hit. She exited safely, and as a jaded New Yorker, shrugged her shoulders and headed towards the battery, where she went back to NJ. Her son-in-law was on the 20th floor of the north tower preparing for a meeting when the attacks came. He also got out safely and walked to his wife's office in mid-town. To this day, I am still drawn to all things about 9-11, and hope that somehow we will capture and punish the people responsible for this. My wife and I were going to visit NY/NJ around the time of the attacks, to show her where I am from and dispell her ideas of what a big city is like, but I haven't been able to go yet. After class, I went out to have a smoke with some friends, when someone told me that her friend called her and told her that a plane crashed into one of the WTC buildings. We didn't know if he was pulling her leg or not, so I went about my business, which led me to the Starbucks I usually went to before my next class at 11. I called my mother (who works for a large ISP) to see if it really happened, and she confirmed it. She told me it was extremely busy and she had to go. It turns out that one of the girls who worked at Starbucks had a boyfriend who worked at the Pentagon. We didn't have a television, but people were getting phone calls here and there with updates. I still couldn't believe what had happened. By 10:45 a.m., I had to go to class. Everyone was nervous, and the teacher was still trying to teach the class. We kept hearing sirens outside and wondering what was happening. People were looking at the windows every time a plane passed by. As we walked out of class at 12:15, there was a sign saying that the school was closed as of 12:00. I was due in at work (at the same ISP as my mother), so I tried to call to find out what was going on, and no one answered. So, I called my mother again and she told me everyone went home and for me to go home. I spent the next three days glued to my television and computer, my insides turning inside-out, trying to rationalize what happened. I tried to keep in touch with all of my friends, and it was easiest to stay online to do so. The following Friday, I went into DC to my Archdruid's apartment in Dupont Circle. Some the members of our Order met us there and we held a prayer vigil that evening with candles, in plain view of the Washington Monument. It was at the same time millions of people throughout the world were doing the same thing. It's a time when those who wish can go to the front of the school and pray and say the pledge to the flag before school starts. The gathering started at 7:30 central time, 8:30 eastern. There were probably about 100 people in attendence, which is a tremendous turn out concidering we are such a small community. Later in the day alot of us parents began to realize that our children, school leaders and ourselves we at the pole when the first plane hit the World Trade center. Tell us your story: I had just logged onto my computer on AOL in my home office and had decided to go into the AOL chat room, something I hadn't done before. A newsflash pop onto the screen saying the World Trade Building had been hit by an airplane. At first I thought it was something just to catch your attention to click onto a site...but when the people in the chat room began talking about it, I immediately got up and went to my bedroom and turned on the tv where I saw the smoldering tower and thought what a terrible accident. Within another minute or so, I saw the second plane hit the second tower. I knew then it wasn't an accident and New York was under attack. How terrible. I thought about the people who were obviously immediately killed on the planes and in the buildings and those trapped in the upper floors. I thought of the movie of the fire in the highstory building "Towering Inferno" I think that is what it was called. It wasn't long before I do believe I heard speculations about the heat and the durability of the buildings. The news cameras were picking up all the smoke and degree and panic when people started jumping out the windows. I was so sad and shocked as I watched the news. Then it happened. The first tower collapsed. Oh my God!! was all I could say. All those people trapped and shortly after the second tower collapsed. I never thought in all my days living that I would be witness to such a tragedy. Such a lost of life of Americans of all races and professions. The police, fireman and people off the street who ran in the buildings to help other were lost. Innocent people...men, women and children. These people were common people...workers. People who had risen from their beds to go to work to make a living never to see another day or their families. I was worser than the Pearl Harbour attack which was army against army...but to kill people...thousands of innocent people who haven't raised a hand against anyone is so cruel. I realized then what true evil is and true cowardness is. This is my second unhumane tragedy that I have witness in my lifetime. The Oklahoma bombing was the first and now the New York Trade Towers. The earthquake of Mexico City was a natural tragedy and so were the hurricanes that hit the eastern shores of US and the midwest floods which claimed so many lifes. The mudslides of Central America was also nature tragedies but none compare to the terrible and evil acts of man. I guess when you look back through history and you witness the terrible things that have happened...we have to look at ourselves. Was there justification in dropping the first nucleur bomb on Japan to end a war? Thousand of innocent people were killed then. The slaughter of Indians...men, women and children in this country. War is the most evil act of man. There are no lines or limitation to the cruelties of war. The fight is over territorial possessions of land, oil, gems and whoever gets in the way become statistics. We as a human race need to look at ourselves, help each other, create alternatives. No oil... turn water and electricity to power our vehicles. No one in the world should go hungry, this country alone can feed the world. Evil people cause evil things to happen. Leaders who are evil and won't let food into their countries to wipe out a race of people is evil. The United States is overall a great country with a great way of life and we are a creative people that can come up with new solutions to the problems of this world...but we are not immuned to evil. Thousands of innocent people dead and the NY Skyline changed forever! I was stunned all day. I got into my car at the end of the day and sobbed for a good half hour. When I was driving home to my other job (dance teacher for my mom's studio; Ceil Sharon School of Dance)I tried to compose myself so I would be strong for my students. I walked into the studio, and said "ok, we ready to dance?". One of the girls approached me and said "isn't it sad what happened today?". I lost it again. I couldn't believe that this innocent 13 year old was so touched. She wasn't acting selfishly like most teens I know, but rather she was concerned and not interested in dancing at the time. I saw the smoke, not knowing how severe it really was, the radio was turned up and that is when I found out the plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. It was soon after that I heard the second plane crashed into the second tower and unconfirmed reports of something happening at the Pentagon. I spoke to one of my acquaintances a distance away soon after, waking them from their sleep, telling them of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. It was at that time I was told it was a suicide attack, Bin Laden was responsible and to watch out for Anthrax. Everyone in the office was upset, sierns were going on, they closed the courthouse and sent everyone home. I felt helpless, there was nothing that I could do to help at that time and was emotionally upset for those whose lives were taken away, for those who were walking around looking for loved ones and after seeing the first camera footage of the dust, just the thought that all the ashes were those vaporized from the intense heat and impact of the crash and the implusion of the buildings. Our community set up a drop center for items that were needed there, but I still felt helpless that I could not be there to help with my own hands. Watching the untiring efforts of all the volunteers was beyond anyones thoughts, but just to be able to pull someone out alive. This is not a time for hate, but to remember to stay close to your family and friends because this could happen again. The USofA is not protected by its borders of waters any longer. The courage of everyone in this country, our Canadian neighbors who didn't think twice about helping all the stranded airliners, England who acknowledged this tragedy and stood by us and the other countries who sent their sympathies and offer of assistance. WE ARE 'ONE' NATION UNDER GOD - Our beliefs in freedom will outweigh what we are to encounter in order to protect the freemdom that we know and will honor all who died, unknowingly for our freedom. This brutal act has given all of us the strength to go on, the courage to move forward and to accept that the healing process will take time; even if we don't understand why. May all those who perished watch over all of us and guide us to a better life; for they are in the hands of God. I thought it was so unreal when it came on T.V I ran in and called my husband out of the room. We were both in shock! I couldn't get my eyes off the T.V. for hours I was there glued to the television, scared and very sadden, angry, so many emotions you have when something like this happens. I remember wanting to go and get my girls out of school but I was afraid I would miss something on the television. I seen when the second plan went into the building. I was so shocked... All I know is when I laid down to go to sleep, I couldn't sleep my mind was with those in New York... I didn't sleep for days... I cried many nights... I never thought something like this could have an effect on the whole world. I feel like apart of me was in that building when it went down. I pray for all the ones that did have apart of them in the building. And may God continue to make them stronger everyday. Tell us your story: I was drving home from my morning classes that fateful September morning at 9am I was humming softly to myself , because it was a beautiful sunny day. I decided to turn on my car radio to hear some music when chaos greeted me. I couldn't understand what they were saying so I turned the cahnnel to another station. Oddly enough the same garbled report greeted me. I decided to listen for exactly what was happening when a reported named Peter Jennings said" It's confimed ladies and gentlemen god help us all a second palne has crahsed into the second tower..." I was confused trying to understand what he was talking about. " What!!!" I shouted in alarm. Then he came back on " America has been attacked by an apparent terrorist act. Two air liners have crahsed into the World Trade Center Towers and Tower 1 has collapsed... It's not known if the second Tower or surrounding buildings are in danger of collapsing.....{intense crashing sounds, screaming, roaring of explosions}... God halp us... This is a drak day in history... The second World Trade Tower has collapsed..."( Peter, J. 9/11/01). I sped home at breakneck speed crying and screaming " WHY GOD WHY!!!!" I screeched into the drive and ran to the door... I left my purse in the car... I left the keys there also... Forgotten as the peacful happy world I once knew was torn from me... I beat on the door and screamed when I was unable to place the key in the lock. I screamed , beat on the door and cryed for my mother to open the door... She was home sick in bed, when she sleepily came to the door and opened it..." What's wrong with you? Did you have an accident?" She saked growing alarmed at my hysterical behavior. " We have been attacked by terrorists and the World Trade Towers are gone... Turn on the tv now!" I cried in anguish... She was in shock standing there gaping at me... Not believeing me until I turned on CNN... There were the glaring images that are burned into every Amercan's memory... Plane one's impact on tower one, the second impact and the fire, the black column of smoke filling the nWe York Skyline and then finnaly , painfully slowly they fell... " On God no... "I kept saing over and over again as my mom cried with me for all of the people we knew were dead, dying , or hurt... I couldn't stop crying as anguish filled my heart. Then I realized my little girl was still in school... I frantically dialed the number to make sure she was safe... She was I asked if I could come and get her ,but they were on security lock down... They knew what had happened and to insure the children's safety they kept them inside... We then heard about the threat to the president and the other two planes still flying under terrorist power heading towards the Pentagon and the White house... I truly thought that we were in WWIII. They had destroyed a national symbol with our own planes and now they were after our Presdident! We prayed for our country, the victims in New York and the Pentagon. We didn't know about the herroism taking place in Pensylvania... I will never forget the horror of that day... I will never forget watching the report that evening as the Taliban bombed Kabul with ground missles... The reporter did not know excatly where they were originating from, but the images said it all... I was in a complete state of anxiety, I was crying and hyperventilating believening with all of my heart that this was the end of our world... I was afraid to go out, drive anywhere ,or attend college the next day... I did go ,but I was exhausted, depressed and teary... I ended up dropping the class, because I couldn't concentrate. A year of depression followed and we celebrated the anniversary at a memorial on the padestrian bridge at Rihele Plaza where a pice of the World Trade Center was placed for us to touch and lay flowers on. We all cried as we stepped up and placed a flower for all those who have perished... I cherish my family, my mother and my little girl... I value every single day God has blessed us with. I still get sad about what has happened to our country , but I have confidence that the President will insure our safety and our future. God Bless New York, God bless Washington DC, God bless all those who have died, and suffered at the hands of tyranny and evil that cruelly stole away their lives and dreams. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 10th - Night I went to bed with a kind of weird feeling in the back of my head. I couldn't quite figure out what it was, but I usually get this feeling before something big happends. I had an important test the next day, so I figured, hey, maybe this means I will do well on it. I fell asleep... September 11th - 7 AM (PST) I awoke to hear the sobs of my mother crying "We're in war, we're in war..." I had not come to my complete senses, and then I heard the TV on. "If you're just joining in with us, both towers of the World Trade Center, in New York City, have been struck by two large airplanes, according to witnesses." I thought "This is some sick Hollywood movie, this can't be the news." I turn on my TV to CNN, and I saw the chaos. I immediately looked into the corner of the screen, where the word "Live" was flashing. What is all of this? Dear God, the people in that building. I quickly dressed for school, and as I was putting on my t-shirt, the first of the buildings fell. I was in shock, I did not know what to make out of it. I got into the car, and turned on the radio to KNX 1070. My school is about 15 miles away, right by downtown LA. As we were approaching the Harbor FWY, the second tower fell. I immediately looked out into the LA Skyline, thinking "Will it happen here?" I glanced up into the sky, to see the approach pattern into LAX. There were no airplanes. I thought "This is odd, no airplanes flying into LAX today, the FAA must know something is going on." It had not even hit my head yet, that this was a terrorist attack. I arrived at school, and the administration was doing there best to keep everyone calm. I went to my lockers, and joined a conversation with people speaking about the events. A kid came up to us and said, "What's going on guys..." He had not heard of the news yet, which was surprising to us all. We told him, and he began to get worried. Apparently, his brother worked in Tower 2, of the World Trade Center. (We later found out, that his brother, who had recently graduated from the school, saved dozens of lives that day. He quickly helped people out of the building, and later, as the building collapsed, he was leaning against the side, just outside the main lobby. He looked up, just as the building started to collapsed, and ran. Somehow, he lived.) School was cancelled that day, and for the day after that. We were so close to Downtown Los Angeles, that we felt that it was a danger for us to be in school. I drove him, and there was hardly anyone on the freeway. I pulled into my driveway, and ran inside, to turn on the TV. I sat there, watching the coverage for a few hours, then fell asleep. The events of the day had worn me down mentally. September 12 - Morning I woke up, and thought it was all some big dream. Those buildings didn't fall, I joked "What an awful dream I had." Then I turned on the TV, to the local news. It hit me again, that this was not a dream. Initally, I did not know that the fire was due to a terroist attack. As I continued to watch the morning news a feeling of "this can't be real" overcame me when I saw the footage about the Twin Towers. I have to admit I was quite concerned about the people in New York, and how the students at Cheney High School were going to react. (I work at the high school, and a large segment of our student population are families attached the Fairchild Airforce Base.) Even during times of despair/sadness humans are capable of pulling together. Our students supported each other and the faculty during the entire day. When fathers and mothers were being shipped out, students would support each other. It was uplifting that during a time a despair for our country, the youth at our school did what they could to support each other and to remind us that life does go on. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up early on Tuesday morning-- I like the morning-time; I'm a "morning person." I had a Russian history class at 10:20am, but I wanted to have time to get some coffee and actually take a glance at my reading assignment. Before I showered, I pressed rewind on the VCR (watched "Pollock" previous night and had to return it). When I came back in the room, the tape had been rewound but the VCR had reverted to TV. That's when I saw it. The first plane had already hit one of the towers. At first I didn't think much of it... I don't know what I thought. But I kept watching the news. At that time, I can't remember what station I was watching, they were (the news anchors) trying to figure out if it was a terrorist attack or not. Then the second plane hit. I knew it was serious-- I was affected less, at very first, by the images than I was by the shock and fear reverberating in the journalists' voices: "Ohmigod! A second plane just hit!" "Did you just see that?" "Oh, those poor people!" Then, I don't know, a panic-button went off in my head or my heart... I lived in a sorority house at the time that had a paging system. It was still pretty early (by college-standards of time)-- but I woke everyone up. Some girls didn't get it, why it was so frightening. But I am a journalism and political theory major-- and it infuriated me that they were so...indifferent-- so, I scared them all. I made a bunch of girls cry. Then my mom called and made me cry. She called my two older sisters on the West coast, too. She really thought that the apocalypse was upon us. Maybe it is. It wasn't until the Pentagon got hit that I became nearly hysterical. I started to shake and cry. It was too scary. I didn't know what was happening. Nobody did. I ran to the student Catholic church or something like that-- it was right behind my house. I went with two other girls and we lit candles. And tried to pray. I used to be religious when I was in elementary and middle school-- I went to a parochial school back then. I couldn't think or pray. But I wanted to be with other people. I had already skipped Russian history class, but I walked to my next class (a magazine writing class). A few people were there and all we did was watch the news. Nobody talked much. By 3pm, I had my political theory senior seminar with some of the brightest, most articulate kids I know. We didn't know what to say. So we talked abuot our reading and stayed the full time. I came back and watched news. Then I went to the bar a lot. I drank. I turned 21 only 6 days before. I was hungover the next day. We watched the news. That's all we did. I became angry a few days later. College kids seemed really dumb and naive with all their peace rallys. Pray for peace; but prepare for war. Get real, you know? Get real. I know the US isn't perfect, any dummy knows THAT. We have a lot to fix. But we're not so bad. We do what any superpower would-- and I think we're an improvement on those those that have come before. All I could think was... I couldn't think. My head was empty. I dwell on it still. Those people high above the plane's impace in the WTC: they were so high above it. They were looking out the windows-- hundreds of them. Some jumped. What were they wearing? Who are they? How did they die? What do you do when you're going to die? Did they know it? Did they think they'd be saved? What does it feel like when you start to die? But I heard a quote somewhere, I can't remember where-- but it was so poignant and lovely... people call me morbid, but it's not that: "Only when worldly disaster has worked its utmost, can we realize that there remains something in a man's soul forever beyond the accidents of existence-- with power in its own right to make life beautiful." It seems like just yesterday. I've been watching various television shows that have been shown throughout the week. I realized, that on that day five years ago, I didn't cry. I was shocked and amazed, but not sad. I don't think I could take it all in until seeing the images within the following week. Now when I see them I cry. I can't imagine an evil so great as to take thousands of innocent lives... in their prime. What is the matter with people? Today my American flag is flying high at my home. I am watching CNN's pipeline of unedited newscoverage from that day, as well as other news stations to watch the memorials. Last night I prayed for the families of victims (as I do every 9/11) and asked God to help them make it through the day. Today is a day for remembrance, and that is what I'm doing. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Sept. 11, 2001 I had was at a new job working for Americorps in one of the public schools. It was maybe my second week there and many of my co-workers were new to the City like I was. It was a time of transition from college to adult hood in many ways. I had also moved from one of the sister churches of the International Churches of Christ to another so I was trying to get to know people and live my spritual convictions in a new enviroment. It was ironic and sad, not to mention hard because even though freedom of religion is thought to be a given. My freedom had been constrained. I believe according to Matt 28:18-20 in helping other people have a relationship with God. For example asking if they would like to study the Bible or come to church. My contract which I didn't see untill the second week had very strict rules about speaking about God. To the point of even if I was in the car with a co-worker I would but the letter of it be breaking the rule to mention God. Prior to Sept. 11 I was praying to be able to talk about God. Post the very sad events of "911" our Nation prayed. At my job we were given time off to go worship, and even prayed as an office. I feel very sad for the people who lost their lives and I hope that nothing like it ever happens again. I also hope that we as a country and people world wide continue to turn to and seek God and the love and healing only he can bring. 2 Chronicles 7 :14-16 & Romans 13:8-10 These are the things which impacted me after the shock and reality of being attacked hit. Another sad memory I have is that in the week of Sept 11th at the school I was at, some of the kids who were of middle eastern background got beat up by some of the other kids. The good thing is it was stopped by the school. I am a minority. I know we need to be extreemly carefull as a Nation. However I hope we guard against hate and prejudice.
