He turned on the tv and there in front of me was the remains of the world trade center. I did not believe it at first. It seemed so unreal like a movie. How could someone do this. It only took a few seconds for this to hit home. I immediatly grabbed the phone and called my parents. They were busy trying to get a hold of my brother. He is stationed at the Naval base in Italy. It took about 2 hours to even get a call through to Italy. He was on lock down. They had him on the highest alert. They were briefing everyone for war. Fighter jets were going up every hour. While I was at home crying and feeling safer than him, I couldnt imagine what he was feeling. To be only 20 and having to prepare to go to war. Now it is 1 year later and he is being shipped out on an aircraft carrier heading to the middle east. My thoughts now are is he going to make it home. It seemed like hours but with-in 10 minutes my son called from the street outside the buildings and said he was heading home. Less then a minute later the 2nd plane hit and the next hour seemed even longer as all the phone lines were busy and i could not reach my son. I finaly heard from him just before he came home at 10 am. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11 I walked in to my mom?s room to see the first tower in smoke on the television. I asked my mom what happened, but my mom only said that she didn?t know but an airplane hit the World Trade Center. As I continued to watch the TV I saw the second plane hit. I remember all the news anchors were dumbfound and didn?t know what to say, but after the second plane hit they realized it must have been some sort of attack. I also remember going to school and asking all my friends if they had heard what happened. During lunch my friend was desperately trying to contact her brother who was supposed to be released from service in that army that day, but instead they called him back. It all seemed so fake and surreal? I couldn?t believe it. When I went home all my brothers and sisters were there and we sat around the TV watching the news. During dinner that was all we talked about, while we were washing the dishes that was all we talked about? that was all we talked about for awhile. I remember watching the people jump out of the windows in the World Trade Center and my sister saying ?Oh my God, that?s horrible. It?s just awful.? It was so hard to believe what was happening? I mean, I couldn?t believe it. I think it was harder because I didn?t personally know anyone in New York and I was so far from the World Trade Center that it was just surreal. During the assembly at our school on September 11 earlier this year I wanted to cry, but I think it will be okay. I didn't have class that day, so I thought I was going to be my usual routine , of laundry and clean my room. I looked at the tv, and heard some crazy news of someone crashed into the World Trade Center. I said what in the world, who can't fly a plane ?!? I then listened even more and realized that America was attacked. I couldn't believe it. Someone had come into out own country and used our own planes against us to kill innocent people. People who didn't even know what was coming. They had on chance to pray, or even to call their loved ones and tell them good-bye. I was shocked and am still in shock about this. As I sat down at my desk, my co-worker Tim walked up and began to tell a group of us how his wife called him and told him a plane had hit one of the towers. I thought it was odd news, but was not shocked b/c I didn't understand the magnitude of the event (didn't know size of the plane, didn't see pictures of smoke billowing out of the tower). Then Tim says, "and you won't believe this", his wife was watching the live news while talking to him on the phone, and told him as a 2nd plane was hitting the other tower! Maybe two seconds passed before all of us in the office got over our surprise and voiced the understanding that this had to be an intentional terrorist act. The funny thing was that Tim said this with a kind of bemused grin on his face. And I grinned back at him this way. It was the kind of grin you put on when an extraordinary event occurs that you just can't believe. At that moment, we didn't have a TV so none of us in the office had seen pictures of it, we didn't think much of the resulting fire, and didn't know how large the planes were. We just didn't fully realize that hundreds of people had just been slaughtered. Then the group started to theorize about what would happen. Somebody pointed out that there would be a fire and it would probably trap everybody above the point of collision. Slowly, as we thought about it more and got more details, we came to the realization of just how huge an attack this was, and how many people may have died and may still die. From this point on, not much work got done. Myself and the other computer-savvy folks started scouring the Internet for news information. Practically all of the news pages were unavailable since they were being flooded with requests. Finally one of us found a small local news page that was slow but accessible. Then we saw pictures of the smoking towers. I started calling friends and getting calls from friends--email just didn't seem to be an intimate enough forum for discussing the matter. I wanted to connect with people I knew, to hear their voice. One of my friends called, saying in depressed shock, "Can you believe what's going on?" He was at home watching TV. Then he said to me, expressing a very sad, resigned, and desperate feeling, "oh god it just fell." But I didn't appreciate what he was saying. I just assumed that maybe a top part of one of the towers had fallen off. I didn't fathom that the whole thing could collapse. I wouldn't find that out until a few hours later. At lunchtime, one of the head management told us he was heading home for a long lunch, which he doesn't normally do. We all understood that he was going home to be with his family. So I called my girlfriend and asked her to come home for lunch with me. People just wanted to be with those they love that day. (Probably even at that very early point most people had already started having their life's priorities rearranged--started to understand with greater clarity than most of us ever had before what's most important in life.) I will never forget sitting on the couch next to her, turning on the news, and first seeing a replay of the 2nd plane hitting. As that fireball flew out from the building, I felt that awful feeling knowing that hundreds of people had just instantly loss their lives by the deliberate act of some other. My girlfriend and I let out small gasps of shock and then sat there silent for a long time, watching the news coverage, holding each other. The emotional impact and magnitude of the event had finally settled in. When I saw that collision and fireball, 5% of me marvelled at how it was like an action movie. 90% of me felt that deep, monolithic and appropriate feeling of horror and grief for those who died. This was a feeling I'd never had before; it must be the kind of thing a soldier experiences on the battlefield. And the other 5% of me pondered how I--someone who'd grown up watching action movies and playing video games and had always revelled in the fake war and death so prevalent in our entertainment culture--experienced a reaction entirely different from when I watched those movies. And I was glad that this horrible event had exposed so clearly and definitively my true humanity, which is so often obscured in the entertainment-centric nature of our everyday lives. I was shocked when I saw replays of the towers collapsing. I didn't think that was possible. I just never considered the physics involved. When my friend had mentioned it earlier, I had assumed that the top part might have come off and slid off the top. Watching the thing crumble to dust gave me such a deadening feeling in the pit of my stomache. I felt like I couldn't properly feel the depth of emotion that was relevant to this event. I felt like there weren't any emotions that could reflect the depth of horror seen in those images. In the days following, my life changed, as so many others. I saw things in a different light. My priorities in life were rearranged for the better. My pride in my country was reawakened. And, above all, I stopped taking things for granted. My feeling in the days and weeks after the event was one of grief, confusion, but also pride. I didn't feel much anger; I felt something much stronger than that. I felt a steely resolve and grim sense of determination. One other change I've noticed in myself and others since 9/11 is a greater desire to understand the world. I read the international news with a passion now. And I know others who now, despite never having watched the news for anything before, keep tabs on the latest headlines. Because of Americans' reaction to 9/11, I'm optimistic for the future of my country. And I'm optimistic for the future of the world. It must have been right before 9am. I had no idea what was going on. I was just about to get ready for work, when I found myself glued to the TV and in awe. My husband was on a business trip in LA and I was alone at home. I called him at around 9am and he told me that he was watching too. We didn't know what to think. At first, we thought it was an accident, but then we saw the second plane crash and the news reported the possibility of a terrorist attack. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the first tower collapse, both of us still on the phone, we were heart broken. We didn't think the towers would fall, we thought the top would just burn. So, I proceed to make calls to our family. My husband's dad lives in Queens, and I could not reach anyone in the NY area because all the NJ/NY lines were tied up. My dad works in DC, and no luck either. I got on the internet right away, and my sister in law who lives in DC, is on AOL IM - tells me she's scared because they won't let her out of her building. She works only a few blocks from the White House. She says the lines are busy and cannot get through to her family. I then call her mom and tell her she's ok. She didn't get home that day until late afternoon. Thank God for IM! I called work, to find out if people knew about this, my office mate and another friend said they were all listening to the news on the radio and that people had left work already and that the building was closing shortly. We live near the Jersey shore and this place called Union Beach is about 5 minutes away. On a clear day, you can see NYC from the small boardwalk. So 3 of us decided to go. We went there after the towers had already collapsed. We saw a lot of smoke and an intense fire going on. There were a number of people watching with us. It was very sad. I still cannot understand how these people could have done such an awful thing. My sympathies to all who were affected and those who lost loved ones. May God bless us all. I was attending a master gardener class when our speaker came into the room and said the World Trade center and Pentagon were hit by an airplane. The room fell silent and you could hear a pen drop. My partner immediately tried to use her cell phone and offered help because she was a nurse. She left and our class was dismissed early. I kept my hair appointment because he assured me he had a T.V. and we could watch the news together. I was glad I wasn't alone tht afternoon because my sons were at school and my husband was at work. 2.Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so tell us how. Yes I think everybodys life has changed. I tried to be more aware of my surroundings and I want to be more knowledgeable about world events. I try not to take things for granted and hope to live each day to the fullest. The family goes to church more often and we hope to show more kindness and peace in the world. 3.What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? There were so many courageous people that helped the victims and hurting people in D.C., New York, Pennsylvania and we should never forget their bravery. I think we should remember how patriotic our country became and all walks of life helped out. The store sold American flags. Red Cross received too much blood. People donated millions of money and services to help after 9/11. Our government showed leadership and really began to work together. 4.Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes I had a flag flying that Saturday on the front of my house and had miniture flags on top of our mailbox. My feelings are stronger for the American flag. Being a teacher I always had a flag in the classroom and taught facts about the flag to the kids. I still get goosebumps when the National Anthem is sung with the flag at sporting events. I love seeing people show their patriotism by flying the flag more often. It was such a emtional swing to me because I had been so happly antisipating my wedding day that this tragety realy made me take stock of everything in my life. I was so grateful that I had found my one true love of my life yet so many other's had lost their loved ones. I gave blood which including the wait took 8 hours the next day. I didn't even care if my needle puncture showed on my arm my wedding day..I just felt the need that I had to do something and that was all I could think of. It was so great to be with so many others who thought to give blood, they were from all walks of life,young hairdressors to business men lined the outside of the building waiting to give blood. That week will always have a special day in my heart, as so much of my life was changing so was the entire worlds. It helps me be strong in my life and marriage because so many American's espically New Yorker's showed the world what we are made of. This country is the greatest because the people are so great and any trial will prove that we are always winners and can accomplish anything that we set our minds to. He was saying something about America being attacked and thinking it was all a joke because Jodi, my friend, and I had just had a huge fight the night before. Jodi got me to turn on the television and we saw what was going on with the first tower. Then we saw the plane crash into the second tower. My boyfriend and I went driving around Fremont to see what was going on around our town, and we heard a loud, large jet fly overhead. We thought the attacks were moving towards Nebraska because all the airplanes were supposed to be grounded. Shortly after that we heard President Bush was in Nebraska at an airforce base, not more than half an hour away. We went home and spent the rest of the day on the couch together, glued to the television in shock. That is why I did not know about the plane crashing into the first building. I stepped out of my car at 7:45 a.m. cdt. Everything was normal in school even when my professor asked us if any one had heard the radio... Then he told us of a plane crashing into one of the World Trade Center Towers. I said "Maybe it was one of the tourist planes, because there was no way a jetliner would have crashed into the building. The airports are just not that close to Downtown for that type of accident." I knew this because I had been a Flight Attendant for 10 years and had flown into all of the surrounding airports many times. We went on with class as normal, but I was anxious for it to be over so I could go listen to the news in my car. I had another class to attend and I had left my purse at home that day, so I had to go home. I got in my car and the first thing I heard was one of the Towers had collapsed and the other had been hit by another plane. I started crying and immediatley called my father who was at his house in Plano. I said hysterically "Dad, what in the world is going on?" His response was "Oh Trisha, it is so awful. Where are you? You need to get home right away. Two airliners have crashed into the World Trade Center Towers, One has just collapsed, and more planes had been hijacked." I didn't know what airliners had been hijacked and I was very nervous for my friends who I knew were flying on that day. My biggest concern was for my children. I had a 2nd and 4th grader at a local elementary school, and I had no clue of what was going on with their school. I went home, got my purse and went to get my children from their school to bring them home with me. The Principal tried to talk me out of this, after all, he had handled this type of situation before. I assured him that I know they would be safe at school, but I needed them with me. It was about me and how safe I felt. My dad came over and we spent the day together crying, and then playing games with the boys. It turned in to a great family day. (My husband was at work, and I don't think he understood the magnitude of the situation until he came home from work and could watch the news.) I feel a great loss, and so sad. I can't understand even to this day why people feel it is necessary to cause such destruction on other people. I pray that all can find a different way to solve problems. God Bless America! Tell us your story: My friend & I took a 6:30 AM train down to Hoboken that morning and proceeded to take the PATH train into the WTC as we've always done before. We were just going down to the city for the day, this time without our daughters. We'd just arrived, came up from the train and walked across into the Crabtree & Evelyn store. We were only in there less than 10 min. when we felt a muffled rumble. I assumed it was the trains down below. All of a sudden we heard a commotion outside the store and saw people running in droves past the store. One woman stopped in the doorway, and as she was taking off her highheels, yelled for us to get out because there'd been an explosion. We then thought it was a bomb because of 1993. We followed the crowd to the outside and there were papers and ash everywhere. There was still things falling down from the sky. We heard a man say that a plane had hit the tower. Everyone thought it was an accident at first. We started looking at all of the things on the ground. We saw a woman's black shoe lying on the sidewalk, airline and Amtrak tickets, stock papers, business cards from the 94th floor. Then we saw a credit card from the Bank of Boston. It was still intact except for being bent up a bit on the bottom. We didn't find out until a couple of days later by reading the paper that it belonged to a flight attendant from Flight 11. We turned over the few things we'd saved for ID purposes to the FBI. We were still in the area when we heard another plane flying and the loudest noise I've ever heard. The explosion was deafening! We began running again. We found our way to a telephone to phone home and stood with others on a street corner listening to a car's radio. Later we found our way to a coffee shop, only to be trapped in there through both collapses. The smoke and debris just came down the street like a tidal wave and engulfed the shop where we were. It was pitch black outside. People came in off & on covered with ash, some in their eyes and some bleeding. It was like being in a war-zone. Hours later we were able to leave there, covering our faces from the dust, and walked uptown. We did manage to get out of the city that night by walking to Grand Central Station. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember receiving an email from a friend to hurry and turn on a tv because the WTC had just been hit by a plane. It sounded so unreal and before it had a chance to sink in, it echoed from an office down the hall and then into the reception area of our office. We turned on the tv, a small black & white in the breakroom, and were all stunned, speechless and confused. I couldn't believe what was happening. As our world turned upside down we were able to visually replay the first incident when the 2nd plane hit. This was so unreal it did not register for several minutes. I am in the business of property management and our first reaction was how do you get that many people down a stairwell - we could only imagine the chaos, then our next question was could the buildings sustain this sort of damage. Then our question was answered moments later when the most horrific scene unfolded before our eyes, as we witnessed these 2 beautiful buildings fall to the ground. Then we heard of the Pentagon and Pennsylvania and it was so completely unimaginable, it was as if a deadly earthquake had shook the entire Earth and we suddenly were not sure of the ground beneath us. I immediately questioned my own safety. I remember feeling so much that I almost felt numb - I felt as if the world was coming unwound before my very eyes. I immediately called my husband who works graveyard shift to pick up the children from school - I have 2. I remember thinking was this over or just beginning. Could we be next (Houston) - a large oil & gas city, the Port of Houston, I worked in a high-rise building filled with oil & gas companies (that all shut down for the day and sent their people home). Then we went home and my children looked to me for explanations, "why Mom?" and "are we okay?". I had to be honest, I didn't know why and wasn't sure if we were safe. We shared our fears, we shared many tears but we hugged most of all and all slept in the same bed that night. We watched the tv and cried with the victims and survivors. It was so heartbreaking to have to try to explain this sort of evil to a 12 and 6 year old. We prayed for everyone that night, especially the children whose moms and dads were not going to be coming home. I remember thinking that this will be a horrible story we lived through and our grandchildren will learn about in school but will need to learn from us how we all felt. I will never forget where I was, physically or emotionally. We will never be the same but somehow we were all brought closer together as a nation and each stronger to our faiths. Tell us your story: well i woke up up in the morning and turned on the tv, and thought what was all the stuff about the world trade center and everything. i probably watched the tv for about five hours i ws close to being in tears about what had happened that morning. i was scared that these people would also come to iowa and so whenever i heard a plane i would run outside of my house and look up in the sky to make sure it wasn't anything that was of any threat to me. It was just a really scary thing thaat had happened to make a long story short. i wfelt really bad about the people who had died especially those little kids. so the next day i went to des moines iowa and signed up for the army and just happened to be on probation and they wouldn't let me in until i got off. so i am waiting until november when i get off of probation to sign up. but that is my story and those are my feelings about it. and i also want to thank all the helpers like the firemen, rescuers, military, police and people that i haven't heard thanks to and tha is the doctors who helped save some lives, god bless to all of you and may god be with you. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up late and turned on the television. I normally do not watch the news first thing but I did that morning. The vantage point of the smoking building made me think it was a tower a building in Warsaw, Poland! I did not see the other tower nor did I see the river. And this is from a former New Yorker! I was dumbstruck when it I found out it was the Twin Towers. I could not believe that two airplanes had slammed into it. then i heard reports of the Pentagon building and then a firth plane had crashed. I truly thought the world had gone mad. Nothing made sense. Up until that morning, I was in a wheelchair and using crutches. I was recuperating from a fractured leg. That morning i had decided to go into work. I was an assitant manager from British Airways at Miami Airport and i thought if there was ever a day that they needed my services, it was that day. I was not needed. The airport was empty except for the rest of the numb airport employees. Miami airport is full of employees who transfered from NYC, so it was even more somber. I am embarrassed to say that the Twin Towers eclipsed those horrible attrocities in Washington and onboard UA93 because this happened in the city of our youth, where many of our families still reside. I could not help but feel useless! What could I do? How could I help those poor people in NYC, Washington and Pennsylvania. I couldn't. In the months that followed, I became frightened that i would be laid off. What would I do? I consoled myself that i still had a life to worry about. Then I started thinking of my back-up plan. Since I am being told to do something else, I decided to pursue a whole new career in nursing! Well, i di d NOT get laid off, and frankly, I was upset. the more i thought about it, the more I wanted to do it. To make a long story short, the compnay looked for volunteers to leave, and I jumped at the opportunity. At 44 years old, i have left the white colar airline management field and am in school taking anatomy and chemistry to get myself set for a worthwhile career! I dedicate my new life to the men, women and children who lost their lives so senselessly and so horribly. I hope the knowledge that these souls are at peace is some comfort to those who miss them.
